CHOOSING ATHLETIC SHOES: 5 THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR

Many people spend a good portion of their day walking around in athletic shoes. Some of them wear them while exercising or competing in different sports. Others wear them while going to school or work every day.

There are many different athletic shoe companies on the market today. All of them offer different colors, styles and features for just about any need or want. New products are always coming out.

You can read more online about designer sneakers for women and other types of athletic shoes. You can read reviews and pricing information online at company websites. You can also examine and try out different kinds of athletic shoes at your local shoe store or specialty retailer.

Choosing the right kind of athletic shoe can be confusing. There are so many options to choose from. With that in mind, here are five things to keep in mind:

1. Know your foot size. You should have your feet measured at least once a year. Shoe sizes don't always correspond to foot sizes, so focus on buying a comfortable pair of athletic shoes that actually fits your feet well. If you're shopping in person, it's best to try on shoes at the end of the day, because feet tend to swell during the day.

2. Understand what you're paying for. Athletic shoes can range in price from around ten dollars to several hundred dollars or more. Because of this, make sure you know what shoe features help justify the price tag. For certain shoes, you're paying a lot more just because of the name brand. There may be other similar shoes on the market that work just as well and have everything that you need, but cost a lot less. Make sure the quality, durability and the features are worth the price you're paying.

3. Learn about the extra features. Different features are key selling points for many athletic shoe models. Shoes that have gel inserts provide good shock absorption. There are shoes that offer varied amounts of cushioning depending on the user's needs. There are also athletic shoe models that come in wide widths or come with built-in pumps that allow the user to customize their fit.

4. Consider what the shoes are going to be used for. Many models of athletic shoes are created specifically for different activities. There are basketball shoes, tennis shoes, cross-trainers, trail running shoes, and walking shoes, for example. That's why you need to think about what your new shoes will primarily be used for. This will help you narrow down the selections a bit.

5. Know when it's time to replace your shoes. A good pair of athletic shoes can usually last several hundred miles, but don't base your decision solely on that statistic. Look at them closely. If your shoes are losing cushioning in the heel or toes, the soles are starting to lose traction or crack, or if they just don't feel comfortable anymore, then it's time to replace them.

These are just a few things to contemplate when buying your next pair of athletic shoes. Because there are so many possibilities, it's worth the time and effort to research them before you buy. You want a set of shoes that are stylish and functional. You want them to last for many miles as you take on more future challenges.

BASKING IN THE BAHAMAS

Sometimes, you just need to get away from it all and enjoy a real holiday from the ups and downs of life. In my opinion, there is no better place than the Bahamas for the ultimate luxury getaway. Located off the south coast of Florida, these islands are a literal paradise on Earth filled with sunshine, good food and lots to keep you occupied. With year-round warm weather and a nation full of friendly people to meet, it’s the perfect vacation destination for summer, winter or fall. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday or a fun-filled adventure exploring the islands, the Bahamas has it all and always with a smile on its face.

Whet Your Appetite

 

First things first: the food. The Bahamas is actually an archipelago comprising of 700 different islands and, because of this, it is an absolute haven for fresh seafood. The rich and varied ecology of the surrounding ocean is prized and protected by the Bahamian people, but it also makes up the staples of their diet. The national dish is the conch, which can be prepared and enjoyed in a variety of different ways, from a fresh salad, to conch fritters, to conch chowder. It’s a tasty, nutritious food high in protein and vitamin E so makes the perfect meal for any (or every!) day of your trip.

 

Head to the capital city of Nassau, located on Providence Island, for some fine dining with a local flavour, or simply stop by one of the many fresh conch shacks spread throughout the islands. In my opinion, this is the best way to experience the true taste of the Bahamas. Don’t forget to wash it down with one of the nation’s signature drinks! After a day spent exploring, nothing feels better than relaxing in the balmy evening air with a cocktail or two. The Bahamas is famous for its sun, sand and sea but also two drinks in particular: the Bahama Mama and Sky Juice. Both are widely available across the islands, but perhaps one of the best Sky Juices I have found is made at the exclusive Sip Sip bar located within the Atlantis Resort.

Get Your Blood Pumping

 

The Bahamas is the perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy long, lazy days lying on the miles of golden sand. However, I know that after a couple of days of this I am raring to go burn some energy and get that adrenaline pumping again. Well, the Bahamas caters well to those with a sense of adventure with activities ranging from a gentle swim with the Exuma pigs, to feeding sharks at Hawk’s Nest. Whether you fancy a hike through the breathtaking beauty of Long Island or a climb up Mt. Alvernia to visit the Bat Cave, there’s a different activity to get you going every day of the week.

 

Just because you’re on vacation, there’s no need to neglect your beloved fitness regime if you don’t want to - even if you're on your honeymoon! What could be better than a run along the beach as the sun sets over the Atlantic? Or a sun salutation amongst the lush greenery of the Exumas? After all, this is exercise in paradise and I can’t think of anything better.

Chill Out

 

After a hard day’s exploring, however, it is time to unwind and soak up the relaxed vibes of the island. The temperature drops by a few degrees in the night-time, making for a refreshing but still balmy evening. Perfect for strolling along the sand under the moon and perhaps enjoying a romantic bonfire on the beach. Or you could check out the nightlife and discover the traditional sights and sounds of Bahamian music: goombay, junkanoo and rake & scrape. The infamous Atlantis Resort is available for those who want to try their hand in the casino, and the nightclubs of Freeport keep playing all night long.

There are many reasons why the Bahamas attracts over 6 million visitors a year and they are all just waiting there for you to discover them. If you’ve been dreaming of the indulgent, exciting holiday of a lifetime then look no further than this unique island nation. It’s one of my favourite places in the world to spend some time away from the business of real life, and I hope that it becomes just as special to you too.

CONGRATS TO SERENA WILLIAMS

Serena Williams is back and re-claiming her time and her crown! If you have yet to see her show on HBO, Being Serena (she talks about coming back after the birth of her daughter Olympia). Not only did she come to the French Open in warrior mode, she rocked a Nike black body suit that was more than just adding to the fashion scope - her full length look that was skintight also protected her against issues of blood clots that she has dealt with prior to her pregnancy as well as after the C-section delivery of her child.

Coming back to Roland Garros after 9 months of the birth of her daughter - she was ready to play at the Grand Slam and let everyone know that she is and always will be the G.O.A.T.

The tennis star put her look into her own words by saying, "It feels like this suit represents all the women that have been through a lot mentally, physically, with their body to come back and have confidence and to believe in themselves," Williams said after beating Kristyna Pliskova 7-6 (4), 6-4 at Court Philippe Chatrier. "I definitely feel like it is an opportunity for me to inspire a whole different group of amazing women and kids.... I call it, like, my Wakanda-inspired catsuit," referring to the fictional nation in the film "Black Panther." We designed it way before the movie but it kind of reminds me of that."

Not only was the catsuit a statement for today, but it recalled elements of fashion history as she wore on back in 2002 U.S. Open and it is similar to a white bodysuit that American player Anne White wore at Wimbledon in 1985.

The match on Tuesday was the first at a major tournament for the 23-time Grand Slam champion in 16 months. She noted that she, "had a lot of problems with my blood clots, and, God, I don't know how many I have had in the past 12 months. So it is definitely a little functionality to it. I have been wearing pants in general a lot when I play, so I can keep the blood circulation going. It's a fun suit, but it's also functional, so I can be able to play without any problems."

BEST WAYS TO KEEP YOUR BODY AND YOUR FINANCES HEALTHY ON VACATION

A vacation is a time to kick back and enjoy a break from the hustle and bustle of day to day life, which is why 62% of Americans took a vacation during 2017. Whether you’re traveling from country to country, simply enjoying a break by the sea or are taking time out on the slopes, you’ll want to ensure your body remains in top condition. However, opting to participate in multiple activities to keep you physically active and healthy during your trip can be costly. So, if you’re planning a hiking vacation or something a little less strenuous, here’s how you can fund those all important activities.

Plan your fitness activities

It’s easy to book a vacation and worry about the spending money you’ll need in the lead up to your departure, so, it’s beneficial to gain an idea of how much cash you’ll require for all your planned fitness activities and adventures before booking. Therefore, when you’ve chosen your destination and secured your hotel room, there’s no need to worry about having to save enough money to enjoy it. Instead, any spare funds you have can be used to fill your suitcase with new clothes and fitness accessories for your trip.

Avoid booking in advance

Once you’ve booked your vacation, it can be tempting to scour the internet and tour brochures for information on all that will be available during your time away. But, don’t book anything before you head on your trip as this is a sure fire way of losing money. A recent study conducted by the University of Georgia found that 61% of individuals gained weight during a vacation, therefore, upping your physical activity during your break is vital to avoid piling on the pounds. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted with a whole range of different pursuits which you can partake in, many of which you won’t have thought or read about back home. And, on a week-long vacation there’s only so much you can squeeze in, so only book your hiking venture or snowboarding lesson a day or two before you wish to do it.

For those that love the water and exploring the creatures that reside within it, there is a multitude of activities you can get involved in on vacation that you will keep you active and provide you with a memorable experience. Whether it’s swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, diving or discovering an underwater shipwrecked, there’s something for everyone. Of course, activities such as these come at a price. To get the best price, book directly with the organizer rather than with a third party agent in your hotel lobby or similar as they often charge more due to their time and fee being added on top.

Think about your outgoings

Before you head on your trip, review your personal finances and set a spending cap which you know you can afford. Make sure you take into consideration any debts you have and think about consolidating them to make your repayments easier to keep track of and more affordable, as this will free up a few extra dollars for you to take with you. It’s easy to go all out when on vacation and want to get involved in every excursion, activity, and trip available. However, be sensible with your funds and only do what you can afford. Most resorts have plenty of free or low-cost onsite activities that will keep you active and give your body a great workout. A swim in the pool, playing tennis, going for a long stroll around the complex and surrounding area are all brilliant ways to get moving at virtually no expense.

Staying fit on vacation is essential to maintain a healthy body and mind. To ensure you can meet the cost of multiple activities, be sure to plan your expenses and avoid booking in advance. You can avoid additional fees by booking activities direct with the organizer and remember to stay within your means and only spend as much as you can afford.

PHUKET: A CITY OF UNUSUAL ADVENTURES FOR YOU AND YOUR SECOND HALF

We have prepared for you a few not the most trivial adventures on the popular resort island, which our friend who lived 2 years in Thailand recently told us. Traveling to Phuket may be different from what you heard, believe us.

Phuket, by virtue of its remoteness, is unlikely to ever become as popular and cheap place as Turkey or Egypt in the best of times, but here you can meet beginner as well as experienced tourists from all over the world every year - some of them come for the first time, but some of them - for the fifth time.. Surprisingly, but for a significant part of even experienced tourists (especially Russian) all the Phuket adventures revolve exclusively around resting on the beach, rum, pool, tom-yama, Patong, shopping and again rum and other things from common Phuket travel guide. Sometimes there are trips to a couple of temples, to the Big Buddha, adult shows, and at the end - a variety of tourist garbage and frank deception like a voluntary-forced visit to snake farms and "unique Royal Thai Pharmacies," in which nothing useful is sold.

Meanwhile, the island is full of all kinds of entertainment - both official and advertised, and those that you find yourself. vipbrides.com shared a small list of what to know about traveling to Phuket in case the beach rest is boring for you from the moment.

Have Fun on the Fair

Sunday Fair in the center of Phuket Town is bright, colorful, sonorous and tasty event. Despite the fact that all this magnificent action attracts crowds of tourists who are not averse to having fun, the atmosphere of good and even some family holiday reigns around.

There are usual fairs, when on Sundays in the beginning of evening the street of Thalang is turned into a pedestrian-shopping and entertainment zone, and more large-scale, like the Festival of the Old City.

This event is held for 3 days, almost the entire center is overlapping for it, you can see the shopping arcade everywhere, concert venues, exhibitions, smart city dwellers, curious tourists and other attributes of fun.

Why should you visit it? To look at the Old City with other eyes, to marvel at its unusual Sino-Portuguese architecture, to eat the most unusual treats and to buy gifts to friends.

Feel the Sea With Your Feet (And Stomach)

During the careless wanderings on a moped along the coast of the island, we discovered a couple of small harbors with blue floating pontoon piers made of plastic in the southeast. They go to the sea for 300-400 meters and serve as piers for rare tourist boats. It turned out that this is a great place for walking.

Naturally, for a promenade on the pontoon, good weather is needed, optimally - overcast, but without waves, otherwise there is a chance to swim in the not-cleanest water of the eastern coast of Phuket.

Why should I do that? This is a very unusual feeling, when you feel with your whole body that the sea is alive. The breathing of water in the bay is almost not noticeable from the shore in good weather, but if you walk to the end on such a pontoon, you begin to more consciously feel the power of this force of nature. And at the very edge of the pier it's good to lie, look at the sky and think. Or do not think at all.

Take a Sea Tour

This advice may seem banal, but our friend noticed an amazing thing: many tourists, even visiting Phuket third time, do not attend the sea excursion.  If you decide to travel to Phuket,  avoid this mistake.

Gorgeous sensations from the salty spray on your face, when you sit on the nose of a speedboat flying through the waves. Incredible emotions from the blue-turquoise featherbed of the purest sea water, into which even those who do not know how to swim jump from the boat. In Phuket, there is a lot of great beaches, but you will not get such pleasure from water procedures, being just on the beach.

In Addition

All these activities are good if you know the best time to travel to Phuket. We recommend you to plan your vacation on early autumn. At this time there are not so many tourists, and the weather is just excellent.

HOW TO MAKE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS THAT STICK

Every year we begin a new year resolving to do (or quit doing) something and expect to be the game changer in our lives. For some it’s to workout, lose weight, cut out all carbs and sweets. For others, it’s a promise to save more money and get finances on track. Regardless of what you resolve to do, according to Dr. Sanam Hafeez, there is a way to set yourself up for failure or success. The mindset we are in when deciding on a resolution determines it's stickiness. Below Dr. Hafeez, a New York based neuropsychologist affiliated with Columbia University, shares key insights on how to make New Year’s Resolutions that stick.

1. Envision the end result and reverse engineer it.

According to Dr. Hafeez, neural pathways in the brain can be changed through a combination of visualization and aligned action. She encourages people to journal about what it is they want. Write it all out. “How would life improve? What would all the benefits be? Cut pictures out of magazines of what you want and post them to a wall (or if appropriate, the refrigerator). Get very clear on what you think you will feel like once you see results,” she recommends.  

2. Get clear on your triggers.

Set yourself up for success by understanding what may potentially get you off track. “Sticky resolutions come with planning. If you want to lose weight then begin with clearing out your fridge and cupboards of junk food. That in itself is an action that will tell your brain that you are serious. Get recipes and write out a new grocery shopping list. Writing plans, micro goals and ideas that serve the greater accomplishment you're reaching for creates “buy in” from your brain, says Hafeez.”

For the people resolving to save more money Dr. Hafeez says to evaluate when and why you spend. If you notice you spend $40 a week on coffee, think of alternatives. “You don’t want to cut yourself off from anything cold-turkey. The brain doesn’t respond well to deprivation. It sends brain chemicals that signal displeasure which is what makes resolutions lose their stickiness. Shift to a possibility or curiosity mindset. Asking yourself, what can I do to save $5 per day invites in inspired thoughts and creative ideas,” explains Hafeez.

3. Pace yourself.

“The reason why resolutions don’t stick is that people set the bar way too high and expect achievement way too fast. Think of every week as a win! Break it down into weekly chunks and train the brain to value quick accomplishments,” she advises. The people who resolve to lose weight and get more exercise won’t stick to it if they don’t celebrate small milestones and try to do too much too soon. Resolve to lose 1 to 3 pounds per week. Do this by cutting out soft drinks or juices and drinking water instead. After 10 weeks you''ll be 20 pounds lighter with great skin just because you did one thing week by week until it became your new normal. 

4. Trick your brain by making it fun.

“Our language and self-talk is everything and determines if our resolution will fade or will become something we’re still doing in June,” says Dr. Hafeez. “When someone resolves to change their diet, exercise and lose weight they already envision how difficult it is going to be so they are already dreading it before they started. However, shifting the brain to doing something fun that is in line with the goal gets you more committed," she adds. Create a playlist of great music to work out to. Look up recipes on Pinterest to build your new shopping list. When you do the advance preparation that is more fun, and take small steps towards building the new lifestyle to support your resolution, you’re setting yourself up for a win.

5. Fuel your resolution with greater purpose worth committing to.

If you want to resolve to save more money, it’s is helpful to have a clear purpose for the money you plan to save. Resolving to save more money is vague making it hard to remain on track. Saving more money to take an amazing vacation or to purchase a home or car is something tangible you can stick to. “It’s common for people to commit to doing something when they connect it to a greater purpose beyond them or an experience they want to have. This explains why lifetime smokers can instantly quit when they learn they are pregnant. It’s not about them anymore. We see the man who is 75 pounds overweight lose weight when his daughter gets engaged. Whenever we can connect resolutions to a bigger purpose our minds get on board, and when the mind is all in, resolutions stick,” explains Dr. Hafeez.

Curl your hair like a pro with these curling iron tips

Curly hair is the best hair. Everyone loves some fund curls and if your hair is naturally straight you still have a chance with curling irons. While everyone curls their hair from time to time, not all of us know how to do it right. Therefore, we have come up with a list of tips that should make styling your hair easier than it has ever been.

How to hold the curling iron?

The curling iron is not a complicated tool but you must know how to use it. Begin with the clip facing away from the face so that you can create a curl that looks more natural. Then you can either hold the iron horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Each option will create a tighter curl. For example, holding it horizontally will create tighter curls, while holding it vertically with create larger ones. Keep it diagonally if you want something that is in between.

Find the size that works for you

Curling irons have different sizes, from 3/8 inch to 2 inches and it is important to find one that creates the curls that you want. Loose waves can be created with larger curling irons, while the ones that are tighter can be created using smaller ones. If you are not sure what you want, you can always get a 1 inch curling iron since that works for both.

You should also think about the length of your hair. If you have shorter hair you will also need to choose a smaller barrel size since your hair might not be long enough to curl around the larger models.

Choose the right curling iron

You want to pick the best curling iron for your hair and that can be a bit tricky. Curling irons can be made out of three materials. Titanium is one of them. The curling irons that use this can distribute heat evenly and the surface is very smooth so the hair won’t stick on the iron.

Ceramic irons are another type. They also distribute heat along the barrel but they also emit negative ions that manage to smooth and moisturize the hair shaft. Thanks to these ions your hair will look shiny at the end and it will curl smoothly.

Tourmaline iron is the last type. Tourmaline curling irons emit six times more negative ions than the titanium or the ceramic irons. They are therefore considered as the best options since your hair cuticle will be sealed by those negative ions and your hair will have a lot of shine.

Choose the correct temperature for your hair

The temperature of the curling iron is also important and you should change it according to your hair. If your hair is coarse or thick you should set it somewhere between 200 degrees and 300 degrees Fahrenheit. However, if your hair is tin you should set your iron below 200 degrees Fahrenheit since you do not want to burn it.

It is also recommended to throw away brushes and rollers and save some time. In order to do this, you should buy cheaper roller covers and brushes. Roller covers are usually inexpensive and it is better to throw them instead of trying to clean them, since you will get better quality this way. You can also buy nylon brushes for $0.99. They do their job and you can throw them away afterwards.

Don’t scrap everything

If you do not want to waste time, you should only scrape what is necessary. Everyone hates to scrap paint, only to discover more and more layers. Therefore, you should only scrape until you reach a solid edge of paint. If the edges stay down, you should not worry about them. The fresh coat of paint can go over them and hold them down.

Use a sprayer when you can

The fastest way to paint something is to spray it. Large areas are ideal for spraying, and you can finish them in no time. It can be a bit annoying to cover everything in the area in order to keep things clean, but after you are done you will save so much time with spraying. A sprayer is definitely the best choice, especially when it comes to surfaces like doors that have almost no features.

Depending on where you are in the country, you could be experiencing some Spring like weather - we know it's still winter but 50 degrees yesterday and 60 degrees today! It's time to bring some friends over to have an intimate brunch with friends! There's something about warmer temperatures that makes doing anything outside of the house so much fun! Whether you cater in a meal, ask friends to whip up a dish or you head to Wholefoods to create something, it's easy to have a brunch at home!

We always suggest a charcuterie platter as it's an easy way to please everyone!

Of course, to add to brunch, how about the perfect Bloody Mary Bar which is a great way to bring everyone together. With a number of garnishes, who knows how long the party will continue on until?

After a great day that merges into the evening, you'll be ready to take some time for yourself so that you can be bright eyed and bushy tailed for a day off tomorrow - as it is President's Day and you have an early yoga session for a bit of self-care!

It's chilly temperatures that make you excited for a bit of comfort food. We're sharing this Hot Peanut Butter Chocolate recipe that is perfect to enjoy courtesy of Chocolate Moosey. For a little twist, we suggest making it your favorite adult beverage.

NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER DAY

INGREDIENTS

2 cups whole milk

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 cup powdered sugar

Pinch of salt

1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon chopped peanut butter cups

2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter

Peanut Butter Whipped Cream

1/4 cup heavy whipping cream

1 tablespoon powdered sugar

1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS

In a large saucepan, heat the milk until it is hot (not boiling). Whisk in the cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and salt until smooth then whisk in the peanut butter and 1/2 cup peanut butter cups until melted and smooth. Divide between two mugs and top with peanut butter whipped cream (recipe below) and remaining 1 tablespoon peanut butter cups.

INSTRUCTIONS | Peanut Butter Whipped Cream

In a large mixing bowl (preferably a stand mixer with the whisk attachment), beat the cream on high speed until it thickens and soft peaks form (when you pull the beaters straight up, peaks will form but fall over). Add the powdered sugar, peanut butter, and vanilla then continue beating on high speed until stiff peaks form (peaks will form but not fall over).
