NYFW FW25

This month, we got our fashion fix as well as to see what will hit retail stores and our favorite online shops with this season's NYFW FW25 which ran from Feb 6 - 11th. Each season it's great to connect with the fashion and creative community as well as to interact with designers that are launching their collections, those that are new to us, and of course our favorites. This period of times includes an array of events from runway shows, presentations, previews, and so much more! This month, we want to share a bit of what we saw this season!

NEW YORK MEN'S DAY FW25

A.POTTS

NYMD is a curated group of menswear brands (depending on the designer, they may include womenswear as well) that showcase in Hudson Yards. It allows you to come during the morning for a series of designers and activations and then to come back later in the day for a new crop of designers. The shows tend to showcase the collections presentation style although some will have a runway show that continues on loop during the timeslot of the day part.

This season we saw A.Potts, a Brooklyn based brand designed by Aaron Potts. He has shown a total of 10 times during NYMD. This season's collection is inspired by Black Panthers and leopards and the collection has a number of grey and black textures in its modernist aesthetic.

SIVAN

Sivan has been a brand that we have always enjoyed seeing each season as they always presented structured pieces for men and women and there is always a theme that ties everything together. For this Fall/WInter season, the focus was Sivan Hotel! This Brooklyn based brand started in 2021 and this is the 3rd season that they have shown their collection. Their fabrication and the impeccable styling is always something that we enjoy seeing regardless of the season that is being presented.

JOSEPH MCRAE

Joseph McRae made it's debut at this year's NYMD. We enjoyed seeing this line that included an array of luxe exaggerated puffers, dresses, and separates. Each piece had fabrictations that were rich in visual texture.

Additional brands that showed at NYMD included Hold NYC, Max Esmail, and Peak Lapel NYC. In addition, Sperry showcased their upcoming FW footwear collection as well as Grimoire NYC allowed attendees of the show to know more about their skincare line.

JOVANI

In between our shows during NYFW, we swung by Jovani's new showroom in Bryant Park. We were able to see an array of gowns, jumpsuits, and more that will find their way on those competing in the Bachelor/The Bachelorette, red carpets, your favorite Real Housewives and so much more. We always like keeping pieces like this in mind for our next project.

AUTHENTIC ROZ

We kicked off our next day of shows early by heading to Authentic Roz which made it's NYFW debut. We enjoyed seeing Rayane Alami's collection which had elements of a retro vibe but showcased Moroccan aesthetics, Japanese minimalism, and Italian craftsmanship. This 24 piece collection is infused with sustainable streetwear.

MICHAEL DEPAULO

Our series of shows continued my making our way to 610 Loft and Garden which overlooks Rockefeller Center as well as St Patrick Cathedral! We were excited to see luxury designer, Michael DePaulo's couture show which showcased an array of stunning gowns! It was great to have such a clear canvas to see the models showcase the dresses, to interact with the creative community as well as enjoying cocktails with good vibes all around.

FILIPINXT

It's always great to attend a collective show where multiple designers showcase their lines together. FILIPINXT celebrated fashion designers and crafstmanship of the Philippines and presented their designers: Bessie Besana (the collection 'Rays of Twilight' showcased bridal wear with chantilly lace, silk, and tulle in serene whites and nudes), Edited Limited + Adante Leyesa (the collaboration between Leo Bartolome or Edited Limited and Adante Leyesa came together in 'Tough Love' illustrating bold streetwear with raw edges with intricate accessories for the perfect accent), Bagoyan (the collection 'Bagoyan Rising' blends an aesthetic of traditional Kalinga culture and modern wearable design), and Tagpi (the collection 'Tahak' merged the worlds of a tropical landscape of the Philippines and the cosmopolitan energy of NYC). Prior to the show, we were welcomed by The Philippine Consulate in New York & Kalye NYC which talked about the designers' heritage, sustainability, innovation, and individuality so that they could take their work and passion to the global stage of NYFW through powerful runway shows.

CHRIS HABANA

Once again NYFW is always a great way to see and connect with designers and their passions! We have been a fan of Chris Habana for a number of years as his designs have been worn by Tyla (floating bra), Latto (a number of iconic moments), Doechii (a number of iconic moments), Beyoncé (Sir Davis bottle crystalized bag), Shaboozey (pony fur coat for Netflix Christmas Day NFL Halftime Show), and more! During NYFW, we were invited to their studio to see apparel and accessories that he has created as well as to see an outfit that was being made for a project that will be worn by an entertainer. It was great to meet other enthusiasts of his work as well as to take in a few drinks in between seeing his archives!

FREDERICK ANDERSON

We enjoyed closing out our NYFW FW25 experience with Frederick Anderson at Paradise Club at the Edition Hotel in Times Square. The show started with an opera performance by 2X Grammy winner J'Nai Bridges.

41 looks hit the runway that had elements focused on romance and had a bit of a Spanish vibe with sultry tones that could be felt throughout the collection as well as the venue!

'TIS THE SEASON EDITORIAL

This month, our editorial shoot takes us to The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection, a Marriott property which is a living gateway to the past, present, and the future as it embodies the early 1900's of literary and Hollywood luminaries that graced the rooms of this hotel while currently being a destination of the modern era with an open path to the iterations it will take as the years continue to evolve.

The holiday season is definitely a marathon and not a sprint as it takes place over a number of weeks spanning between the fall and the winter. We wanted to look at the many days that take place that are casual and allow us to connect to one another as we make our way closer and closer to more signature events! We spend a lot of time with friends, family, significant others, co-workers and more. Our shoot took place at the Tallulah Bankhead suite at this iconic hotel that is in the heart of it all. We wanted to find out more about the history of this hotel, why it's an important part of NYC history, what guests can expect whether they're staying for business, a staycation, or a vacation and more. We took some time to catch up with The Algonquin Hotel's General Manager Willis Loughhead to find out more!

ATHLEISURE MAG: It was such a pleasure to shoot at the Algonquin Hotel and being there, we learned a lot more about the property and its history. When did the Algonquin first open and can you take us back and through the storied history of this hotel as it's over 100 years old!

WILLIS LOUGHHEAD: The land for the Algonquin Hotel was purchased in 1901 for $180,000. In just under a year, at a cost of $500,000, the Algonquin Hotel was built and opened on November 22, 1902. Named for a New England Native American tribe, the hotel welcomed its first guests - a room with a bath set a traveler back $2 per night.

From the day it opened into the current time, the Algonquin has maintained close ties to the arts community with early residents who included the great star John Barrymore, Drew Barrymore’s grandfather, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks. Writers, Playwrights, humorists and critics, as well as editors of both fact and fiction, converged on the Algonquin in the decade between 1919 and 1929, founding the legendary Round Table. My Fair Lady was written in suite 908. William Faulkner wrote his Nobel Prize speech in a room. The Algonquin has been both primary residence and preferred NYC hotel for incredible talent like Maya Angelou, Norman Mailer, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Steve Martin, and Lou Reed, to name a few. Films with a Round Table history include Citizen Kane, Giant, It’s a Wonderful Life, The Sound of Music, and many more.

I continue to host close friends in the arts community such as legendary musicians like Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth, James Ijames, who celebrated his Tony nomination for his play Fat Ham under our roof, and both Colson Whitehead and Richard Hell, New York City legends who read in the Oak Room.

AM: We had the pleasure of shooting at the Tallulah Bankhead Suite (loved the phones which were such a great touch and the blue shade of the paint was so calming) and we know that there have been other suites that are named after notable people, can you tell us about them and why there is such a connection with these individuals?

WL: All 24 of our suites are named after our residents like Dorothy Parker 1106, Herbert Ross 610 and John Barrymore 209.

AM: Who have been some notable people that stayed here and can you tell us more about the connection between the hotel and literary figures? Tell us about the Algonquin Cat! We didn't see Hamlet, but we know that he is just as much a key figure as others who have stayed there.

WL: Hamlet is featured in a children’s book, The Algonquin Cat, illustrated by Hillary Knight who also illustrated the Eloise series set in another famous NYC hotel where I served as Executive Chef for a number of years before moving into Hotel Management.

AM: Tell us about The Blue Bar and The Lobby Lounge. Is there a signature drink that we should know about?

WL: The most famous cocktail is none too cleverly named, The Algonquin; a mix of woodsy rye whiskey, pineapple, bianco vermouth and some say a touch of Peychaud bitters like a Sazerac. We also currently feature a Hamlet cocktail with Rocky’s Brooklyn Botanical, Galliano L’Autentico and Whispering Angel Rosé. Our cocktail lists change frequently and right now I am working on some Holiday treats with Hot Cocoa and Mezcal.

AM: For those looking to grab a bite at the hotel, what can you tell us about The Round Table?

WL: The Blue Bar Restaurant & Lounge is a 3 meal restaurant built around the legendary Blue Bar which opened in 1902 with the hotel. At night we feature cocktail cuisine with classic New York City inspiration from the Oysters Rockefeller to a deli-style Reuben, and we do a brisk, healthy lunch with servers who I would put up against the best of the cities’ baristas. You should see the foam they get for a cappuccino even out of the almond milk that I prefer!

AM: For those that are looking to create an event whether it's a launch, sales meeting, etc - what can you tell us about event spaces that you have available?

WL: We host wonderful and intimate occasions in our small private library featuring Round Table first editions, signed collectibles, vintage 1950’s and 1960’s Playboy magazines and recent releases and memoirs like Thurston Moore’s Sonic Life which just came out. In the early 90's, I worked for Arnold Schwarzenegger as a wood burning oven chef at his restaurant Schatzi on Main in Venice California, so sitting amongst the Pulitzer Prize winners is a copy of Arnold’s latest, Be Useful. We also use the Library a great deal for Broadway stars to dress and have makeup done before premieres and on opening nights.

We also have the famous Oak Room, a wood paneled vintage street front room that can seat 110, for formal dinners next to Hirschfeld’s original artwork that adorns the walls.

AM: At the conclusion of our shoot, we actually took in some live music, which was a great way to decompress, what events do you typically have that guests or those grabbing a drink can enjoy?

WL: We have a culture and history of live music at the Algonquin. It was a personal goal of mine to breathe life into that tradition that started with Ella Fitzgerald and so many others like Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello, Harry Connick, and Oscar Peterson. On Tuesday nights, we feature classic cabaret music with the inimitable KT Sullivan, and on Thursdays, we have live piano and vocals with Rocco DellaNeve who is a legend in the making. You should hear his version of Enter Sandman by Metallica and he also does a killer New York State of Mind. Guest stars always drop by.

October and December are my charity months to raise money for Breast Cancer and Toys for Tots, so our programming expands greatly with Broadway’s biggest talent coming in to belt numbers and dance. Keep your eyes and ears open in December when we have 10 nights of incredible holiday entertainment including one “Santa Baby” drag show that will raise this 120 year old roof.

AM: Tell us about the kinds of rooms that are available and also provide additional details about the suite we were in, The Tallulah Bankhead Suite?

WL: Our suites and king rooms book first. We are a boutique sized hotel with 181 total rooms. None of our rooms are exactly the same and some rooms have a haunted history that has been verified by both official ghost hunters as well as nightly guests. Was it Robert Benchley who moved your towels around or turned on the lamps in your suite living room? Did Dorothy Parker open the shades that you closed before turning in? Perhaps.

In 1959, the filmmaker Preston Sturges passed away in a suite and Montgomery Clift was a frequent visitor. Perhaps.

AM: For a truly decadent stay for our readers is there anything that you can suggest that can be enjoyed at the hotel? I know at one time, you had a $10,000 Martini that had diamonds in it!

WL: We have two packages to note:

  • A Dine with a Broadway Star package, where pre-theater you are able to dine at the Infamous Round Table with one of the stars of the show that you are seeing that evening.

  • Hex and the City package for 2024 with our Resident Wellness Witch, CardsyB who will help you stay magical by reading your tarot cards and your energy so that you can straighten up and fly right in 2024. All guests will receive a reading, CardsyB’s memoir, a Stay Magical AF candle and a Bad@ss B*tches Tarot Deck.

AM: For those that are enjoying a staycation at the hotel during the holiday season, what are activities that you suggest that are in the neighborhood that they should take out?

WL: All the B’s: Bryant Park, Broadway and Books at the NYPL.

AM: For those who have never been to NYC and are here for vacation during the holidays, what would you suggest that they should do?

WL: Get inspired, keep a notebook, write your story. The good ol’ days are now and keep your mind wide open. New York is an awesome place to be surprised. Rockefeller Center has grown immensely and Central Park is just a shopping walk away up 5th avenue.

AM: For those that have corporate functions that are being held at the hotel, do you have any ideas of what they can enjoy?

WL: I partner with BroadwayPlus.com. One of my close friends - ask for Corey - is the guru of the VIP corporate experience with them. They book custom concerts, VIP tickets, arrange backstage meet and greets, and generally unlock all of the perks normally reserved for the highest tier of celebrity guest and bring it to the corporate accounts. We also encourage a Bowery Boys Walking Tour or one of the many sightseeing tours via boat around Manhattan that my team can arrange.

THE ART OF THE SNACK | LIMANI NY

In The Art of the Snack, we always love sharing our favorite places to get a meal and although many may be seen as splurges, there is a perfect union when you have a restaurant that focuses on clean eating and still feels like a splurge with its flavor profiles and assortment. We connected with Executive Chef/Partner, M.J. Alam of Limani New York who shared with us his culinary background, Greek-Mediterranean cuisine and a number of expansions that are taking place with his restaurant!

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us about your culinary background and how you came to Limani NYC.

CHEF M.J. ALAM: I am from Bangladesh originally and I used to live in Canada, grew up there and my culinary base is from Canada. So I learned everything there. I started working at a restaurant chain called Au Vieux Duluth in Montreal at one of the franchises with me and my friend. From there, I took the official chef position and then I was running them all. Before then, I used to work in Estiatorio Milos in Montreal for 3 years. I also opened another restaurant briefly in Quebec and I found out that they opened another Milos in NY and the guys were calling me and I took the position here as a sous chef and after a year, I took over.

I ran Milos NY for 18 years. I opened Milos Las Vegas and Milos Miami and then I knew that if there was an opportunity in the city, I would be interested in opening something else. The owners of Limani reached out to me and they were looking to open their second location in Midtown. They wanted me to be the Executive Chef and they made me a partner as well. So, that’s how we started. I love Mediterranean cuisine as this is what I do.

AM: For those that may not be familiar with Greek-Mediterranean cuisine, what flavors and spices are indicative of foods that are cooked in this way?

CHEF MJA: It’s everything and all that I do! It’s the fish and the fresh seafood! It's all about the salt, the pepper and the oregano. It’s about the capers – it’s about the Greek style! My goal is to always search for fresh fish and seafood and to bring this to the people at the table so that they have a modern Greek style for the modern diet I would say. This is my goal to find the fresh ingredients and give it to the people in a healthy way. I don’t do much with the sauce and all that. Everything is the fresh ingredients and the fresh herbs as well as the olive oil. We try to work with everything that is seasonal here.

AM: We are long time fans of Greek-Mediterranean cuisine and it’s such a treat to be able to talk to you as we are long time fans of Estiatorio Milos here in NY as a favorite for lunch and business dinners as well!

In looking at Limani, you have a gorgeous location at Rockefeller Center. Can you tell us about the interiors of this location and set the stage for us for those that have yet to dine here? Do you also have an outdoor option as well?

CHEF MJA: Yes, yes we have an outdoor option. We have an outdoor garden with tables outside, especially with the amazing weather so that people can enjoy it. Being on top of the rock with all of the buildings around it and there is fresh air that you can enjoy on a sunny day. People really enjoy it.

Inside, we have a nice, white Greek marble and interiors that make you feel like you’re in Santorini. We also have a small infinity pool in the middle of the dining area where you can jump in if you get too hot and cool down ha ha.

AM: Ha I’m sure that they don’t but I’m sure it’s pretty tempting!

What are 3 appetizers that you suggest they should eat after taking that metaphorical dip when they’re dining with friends and family?

CHEF MJA: We have our famous Grilled Octopus that we do sashimi style and it’s really good as it’s a Tunisian Octopus. It’s drizzled with some olive oil and a touch of red wine vinegar. Another great dish that we have that we’re famous for is our Greek Salad and our chips which is called Kolokithi which are paper thin sliced zucchini and eggplant chips served with lightly fried kefalograviera (cheese) and tzatziki.

AM: For your main meal, what are 3 dishes that we should have in mind when we’re coming in for our next visit?

CHEF MJA: We always have on display our fish and variety from all over the world from Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, Greece and local. So you come here, and you choose. Your server will take you to the display and will show you the market and whatever is available, that’s what you can choose. I do have some other options for those that may not like fish. We have a Cowboy which is a 26 oz. bone-in ribeye which has been dry aged for 30 days and is served with asparagus or and potatoes or French Fries. We also have Lamb Chops from Colorado that are served with Cauliflower and broccoli. But I mean, we mostly specialize in fish! I mean, people come here –

AM: For fish!

MJA: Yes, they come here to choose from the display, then the guys scale it, gut it out, clean it and we make it!

AM: What cocktails are you excited about as we’re in the thick of the summer where we’re all looking to be refreshed?

MJA: We have a number of options. We have our Lychee Martini, VIP-TINI with vodka and infused pineapple and we have our Mediterranean Mule with Figenza Fig Vodka, pomegranate juice, fresh lime juice, topped with ginger beer and served over ice. We also have an extensive and global wine list.

AM: To end a great meal, it’s always about dessert. What are 3 that we should be thinking about?

MJA: Oh we have a beautiful dessert that is a home made walnut cake Baklava. Another one that we created is the Deconstruction Baklava – it’s an oven baked layered phyllo dough with almonds, walnuts, cinnamon with honey syrup. It’s beautiful – it’s traditional and like everything, it’s made here. We also have a Chocolatina which is a chocolate lava cake and we use our seasonal fruits and Greek yogurt.

AM: In addition to your Rockefeller Center location, you are also in Long Island with your original location in Limani Roslyn as well as Limani Taverna in Woodbury. Can you tell me about these as well? Are the menus the same or are they different?

MJA: It’s 95% the same.

AM: Is there a pool there?

MJA: No ha ha you have to jump into the sea. But in addition to those restaurants, we also have our Boston locations. One will be in South Street and the other is in Chestnut Hill.

AM: How do you navigate having all of these restaurants? Is it difficult to split your time between them?

MJA: This is what I do, yeah. I love doing this. I was in Boston going back and forth hiring people. It’s about training people and then getting service started as well.

AM: Hearing how many locations are opening or will be opened, we definitely appreciate you taking the time!
