CLEAN BEAUTY THRIVES | PRETTY WELL BEAUTY

February 22, 2023

This month, we're also thinking about how we can shakeup our skincare and makeup. We're always looking at how we can add products that fit our needs, get introduced to brands that may not be familiar to us and incorporating more clean beauty into what we use!

We caught up with Jazmin Alvarez, founder of Pretty Well Beauty which recently opened their beauty destination in NYC's Oculous. A veteran of the industry who is known for her work behind campaigns and photoshoots in fashion and beauty and her love for clean beauty led to creating a brand that showcases these beauty products that are created by BIPOC founders. We wanted to find out more and see how she got into this portion of the industry.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Prior to launching Pretty Well Beauty, you were already a veteran in the beauty and fashion industry. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into the industry?

JAZMIN ALVAREZ: Yes, prior to launching PWB, the majority of my career was spent working as a photo producer and casting director for several large brands including Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, I was an editor at Condé Nast and in between I freelanced and worked on campaigns for Sephora and was the Creative Producer and Casting Director for the Fenty Beauty Digital campaign launch in 2017. I really loved the work that I did and I had the opportunity to work with the most prolific creatives and models in the industry from Steven Meisel, Pat McGrath, Sir John, Guido, etc and talent that was on the major rise at the time like Sir John and Lacy Redway. It was incredible to be a part of all of that but I had reached a point where I felt as though I’d plateaued in my career in terms of my earning potential while at the same time, developed a deep urge to build something of my own.

AM: In working on those projects you mentioned as well as Prada, Balenciaga, Hearst, etc - what lessons did you take away from that that you still use to this day in your business?

JA: Wow so many things actually. In fact I didn't really think or know that all the skills I’d acquired from working as a producer/casting director would be so transferrable as an entrepreneur. My ability to budget, negotiate, and manage a lot of different types of personalities all while remaining very calm. These were skills that took me years to hone in on and to develop a thick skin because the fashion industry is brutal. There’s nothing glamorous about it at all and the same it true with building a brand. I’ve had to balance out the personal and professional ways in which I handle the people I work with much like how I did as a producer. It’s a very fine line that isn’t always the easiest to navigate.

AM: What is it about the beauty space that you felt that you wanted to be part of the democratization of it?

JA: I noticed that there wasn't any conversation around the origins of clean beauty specifically. Beauty as well as fashion has notoriously been known to be quite discriminating against anything that is less than euro-centric in nature. And when that isn’t happening, we see a lot of tokenism. That never sat well with me, especially as someone who tried for a large portion of their life trying to fit into that. It was very damaging and toxic. The fact that something that has existed for thousands of years was/is being appropriated, repackaged and capitalized upon by non-people of color was something that never sat well with me. BIPOC have been surviving on earth-made remedies for self-care and beauty since the beginning of time. However when you enter spaces that offer natural beauty and personal care, you are overwhelmed by brands by people who may or may not have any historical relation to these ingredients whatsoever. While I absolutely appreciate the organizations like the 15% Pledge and Pull Up For Change, the fact that these even need to exist is upsetting. Black womencomprise the largest demographic of beauty consumers yet are often either unaddressed or tokenized as a way to check a DEI box. There’s nothing authentic about it because if larger retailers for example truly saw the value of the black dollar, this would have been part of their strategy from day one. My intention with PWB was to create a space that is authentically inclusive and shine a large spotlight on the products and the brands that are being created by some of the worlds most brilliant and innovative founders in the clean beauty space. This is one of the ways in which I’m democratizing clean beauty and making PWB a space for people who want to discover these brands in an elevated and aspirational setting.

AM: Why is Clean Beauty something that you are so passionate about?

JA: So for years, I struggled with my skin. It was never terrible but it wasn’t great. It took me years to realize it was the products I was using. Upon learning about the hazards of a lot ingredients specifically in products marketed toward black and brown women (which contain on average 9X more parabens and toxic ingredients vs products marketed toward our non BIPOC counterparts) I became angry and scared. I was greatly affected health wise and I knew I had to made a change. Clean beauty is the safest and most effective way to care for ourselves because our bodies respond best to ingredients found in nature because it knows what they are. We come from nature, so creating a relationship with nature is only going to benefit us. It makes for a more conscious human and shopper and encourages us to use our instincts in ways something overly manufactured can subdue. I want people to understand that skin care is health care in a lot of ways simply due to the fact that what we put on our skin as our first line of defense can effect our vital internal organs. Developing a relationship with clean beauty can dramatically change our relationship to how we see and care for ourselves and the planet.

AM: Tell me about Pretty Well Beauty and why you wanted to launch this brand?

JA: I started PWB because I wanted to create a space that I hadn’t experienced before. A space for discovery, connection, community and representation. Today no one is interested in going to a faceless digital mall where they have to sift through 100’s of brands and thousands of products. It’s daunting and overwhelming and frankly really boring. There are so many brands and retailers that have their own definition and standard of clean beauty and I wanted to exceed that which wasn't very hard to do. In fact by developing such a stringent clean standard it allowed me to be able weed out a lot of noise and nonsense and hone in on brands and the people behind them that are truly putting in the effort and always pushing and striving for better. I wanted to focus on those brands and those brands alone. They aren’t always the most well known yet or popular-yet but they are building and growing alongside some heavy hitters (that I like to refer to as my anchor brands). It was a priority for me to include lots of diversity not only with the people behind these brands but also with the price points. I needed PWB to be friendly for people of various socioeconomic backgrounds. I grew up poor and I know what it feels like to walk into a space and know there isn’t anything there for me. It’s a feeling that’s still never left me and it’s how I felt when I entered a clean beauty store years before launching mine. I cannot allow anyone to feel that way when they enter PWB.

AM: What is your process when it comes to onboarding brands that you carry at Pretty Well Beauty?

JA: The process varies and can take anywhere from a couple weeks to a year! I analyze the ingredients as my first step, then the packaging. Packaging needs to have an element of sustainability as well as high level and elevated level of branding aesthetics (this is beauty after all), it must also be compatible with the product they contain. I test every product as well to ensure efficacy. For me its not good enough that something just feels good, it has to work. I speak with the founders and get a high level of understanding of their supply chain (i.e where the ingredients are sourced, how and by whom). If there Is a give back/mission as part of their business model thats always a bonus and well respected. There usually isn’t a ton of negotiating in terms of pricing etc as there are industry standards that we adhere to but there are a couple of outliers I can work with. Many of the founders I carry I’ve had relationships with for many years long before I started the company which is really exciting to be able support.

AM: Pretty Well Beauty recently launched its first brick and mortar at The Oculus here in NY. What are the challenges you’ve had to navigate in this phase of PWB’s growth?

JA: Wow, so many challenges, I don't even know where to begin. I think the biggest one is the increase in expenses that are associated with having a brick and mortar, the schedule and strain on my time since I can’t yet afford to hire in-store staff so I am there 7 days a week nearly 10 hours per day. It’s grueling work but I see It as a temporary sacrifice for the future I’m creating.

AM: What are 3 brands that you’re excited about that you’re carrying at Pretty Well Beauty?

JA: While of course I absolutely love all the brands I carry at Pretty Well Beauty, there are some that I’m so excited for people to get to experience in person such as Mflorens, SKN/Muse, and the fragrances by Leland Francis. Fragrance was something I was never comfortable selling when I was online only as that’s a hard sell since people can’t smell through their devices lol so being able to introduce natural fragrance in the store was exciting and has been doing incredibly well!

AM: How important is it that a percentage of the brands that you carry are BIPOC founded?

JA: This is absolutely incredibly important. This has never really existed in this way before. It’s always been the opposite where BIPOC brands had a very tiny space in an unlit area of a store not getting much recognition and was always hard to find. As I mentioned earlier, BIPOC shoppers are the biggest beauty shoppers so offering them a space with lots of variety of products that will serve their unique and beautiful needs is an honor and a privilege.

AM: We love using our platform to bring people together, to share stories, to create spaces where people can learn more about brands and products and those that are behind them. You’re doing the same by driving awareness to your mission and the brands that are aligned with that. What can those who are visiting your store expect beyond just purchasing their newest find?

JA: They can expect to meet and learn/hear from the people behind these brands. We are doing in store events on an on going basis where our customers and other people can come, get product demos, samples and recommendations for themselves. I also offer consultation services for those who are looking to overhaul their beauty cabinet and make the switch to clean but need some hand holding during the process. This is actually one of my favorite things to do and I started doing this with my friends ages ago whether they wanted to or not haha! They can also expect to be part of a community of engaging and like-minded people who are looking to learn, connect and be inspired. I'm just a brown girl who grew up on welfare and food stamps who now owns a business and lives in one of the most expensive cities in the world. I had an idea and a dream. I had no idea what I was doing or how, but because every single day I did at least one thing that could help me reach this goal, I was able to. I’m still not where I want to be yet, but I’m confident that I’m on the right track. I want people to be able to see what is possible by dreaming bigger, not settling into the circumstances they were born into and that by putting good into this world, you will be rewarded.

AM: Clean Beauty is not a new category but to see how it has been transformed over the past few years from brands leaning into this, the fact that there are accessible as well as luxury options and that the packaging for many makes you want to include it on your vanity – what are trends that we should keep an eye out for in 2023?

JA: In 2023 expect to see more mushroom and adaptogen focused products for skincare for sure. More products that will serve multiple uses and a focus on more innovation around product delivery systems.

AM: For those who have yet to make the transition into clean beauty or want to start the process, how do you suggest that they begin to make their transition and to find items that are comparable to those that they currently use?

JA: Well they can come to Pretty Well Beauty and see me. But if they are not in the area, I would suggest starting slow. You don’t have to throw everything away and start 100% from scratch. That's not practical for most people. I’d say the first things you should start with replacing is deodorant first and foremost.

The CDC reported years ago about the connection between breast cancer and the aluminum thats in antiperspirants. Next I would swap products that spend the most time on your skin, I’m talking serums, moisturizers, SPF. And finally lipstick. In the average womans lifetime, we consume pounds of lipstick from eating and drinking, or even talking while wearing lipstick which most conventional formulas include lead (which is natural btw, but extremely toxic for humans).

AM: Looking at 2023, what are you excited about for Pretty Well Beauty?

JA: I’m really excited about growing our brand’s presence and awareness via the store as well as starting the fund raising process. I’ve been putting it off for a while (I was scared) but now I’m ready! I’m ready to strike while the iron is hot. I’m also excited about discovering new and innovative beauty and wellness brands and growing this amazing community that I’ve started. I’m also looking forward to developing partnerships with other brands who align with our values and being able to merge communities that way. And finally, I’m looking forward to adding more wellness brands to the store and online. We’ve always carried wellness products, but it's not always easy for people who need more guidance to rely on the online shopping experiences so being able to allow people try them in store is amazing. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity to connect and expand in ways I wasn’t sure how I’d do it.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS | MARIANNA HEWITT

January 17, 2023

We caught up with Marianna Hewitt, a well known influencer that took her passion for brands that she loved and personal style to build a brand that is coveted and leaves its consumers wondering about what the next must-have product will be. Summer Fridays has been a brand that we have shared in a number of our roundups over the past few years. We wanted to find out more about about Marianna's approach to the brand, how the line continues to grow its assortment and how she takes time to enjoy her holiday with family and friends as we get into the thick of the season.

ATHLEISURE MAG: We have been fans of yours for a number of years starting way back when you had your lifestyle blog which displayed your visual texture play with neutrals in personal style as well as interior aesthetics. Later, you would go on to create Summer Fridays which we enjoy very much and have shared a number of your products with our readers and are personal fans as well. Why did you want to launch this brand?

MARIANNA HEWITT: Well, being an influencer for so many years and you’re familiar with my content. I love my community, I love my followers and it felt like they wanted something from me that was an extension of me and things that I love. After so many years of posting products, they would ask me if something was vegan, cruelty free, sustainable, if it was good for all skin types – without even knowing, they became a focus group for us. We wanted to dream up that product! You know, you receive so many things and you want to get something that you are excited to try that you love the branding, the packaging and that you love the colors.

So we took all of that information and created Summer Fridays. So Lauren Ireland, my partner and I started working on Summer Fridays in 2016. We launched in 2018 and we’re coming up on 5 years and it has been such an incredible journey. I’m so grateful to not only be an influencer founded brand, but a brand that also works with influencers and it’s so fun because I really value what I bring to other brands so to be able to partner with other creators and to give back to this community of influencers that gave me the career that I have today, I love being able to work with them now today too – so it’s very full circle for me.

AM: We always look forward to your editor packages because you know it's going to be something that is thoughtful and necessary. I love the Jet Lag Mask, the Lip Butter Balm and Body Lotion. I’m constantly stalking your IG to see what’s next. What’s your process like when you’re thinking of bringing new products to the brand and do you have anything new coming up for this holiday season or as we’re looking into the new year?

MH: Our thought process is to be really intentional with the things that we bring out into the world. We want to add products into your routine that you actually want and need and not anything that is unnecessary. We’re still a small indie brand, so there’s only so many things that we can create each year so each of those things have to be really meaningful and things that we think that our community will really love!

So this year, a few of the things that we had were our Lip Balm Butter Sets, so we had an extension of those. We had an SPF that we launched this year too because I live in CA and it’s a little bit gloomy today, but it’s usually sunny and I love to be in the sun and all around the world, but I definitely want to be able to protect my skin no matter where I am. So, launching a sun screen felt very summer for Summer Fridays. We were so excited to have that as it was something that our community really wanted and we really do listen to our customers for the products that they want, the skincare ingredients that they’re looking for and so we create those products for them.

Coming up, we're kind of wrapping up the holiday season, but we have really great launches next year and hopefully, you’ll get them and I think that you will like it!

AM: Looking at your social, you’re always sharing your fun lifestyle as well as interiors. What are some of the things that you’re thinking about when it comes to hosting gatherings for dinner parties and brunches? What are some of your hosting must-haves when it comes to having people over?

MH: I love to entertain, I love having people over and my interior design style was really to invite people over so that they feel comfortable. I like this elevated feeling of my home, but I really wanted people to feel that they could just gather and be together when they come over and that it feels comfortable and not too stuffy! I like to show off my interior design love that I have and it’s so fun to have an excuse to invite people over. I’m super busy and I’m also a very particular person in how I like to have things. My biggest holiday hack is to batch and pre make your cocktails before all your guests come over. What I don’t want to do is that all of my guests come over and I’m in the kitchen making them drinks or they’re trying to make drinks for themselves and they’re not actually gathering with their friends and family together. So by pre-batching that cocktail, it really saves so much time! You can do this in such a cute way. I love glass containers that you can get, you can put all the pre-mixed things together into one container and have it ready to go! That's why I love Astral – any kind of tequila drink is my go-to cocktail. I literally don’t drink anything else except for tequila. So to pre-make these cocktails and everyone knows it’s my favorite, we came up with this really fun recipe. It’s like your classic Paloma, but it has this holiday twist with this Brulee and I am not a bartender by any means, but the fact that I can do this drink and it tastes delicious and it looks beautiful, it’s definitely going to be something that is going to impress your guests.

AM: Is that your signature one?

MH: I love that cocktail, it just feels really great. A normal Paloma anytime of year is perfect and then you have this Brulee one for this time of year for the holidays! I love a Spicy Margarita especially in the summer, so I love to have that then and it’s my go-to cocktail when I’m out. Any type of tequila drink variation is my favorite.

AM: For those that are coming over, what do you suggest that we should have on hand?

MH: A couple of other things that I like to have on hand is of course Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask. You always want to stay hydrated this time of year because I feel like my skin is so dry with the winter weather and the heat is on inside. Just any kind of lack of moisture in our skin so our Jet Lag Mask is great. Jenni Kayne makes these really beautiful Leather Coasters, so I have a beautiful marble table that I made myself from a slab of marble that I found in a stone yard. So I don’t want to mess up the marble table so I always have coasters everywhere just to make sure that no one is leaving rings on my table when they leave my house. So they look really beautiful but they are functional as well. There are a couple of other things that I love to have at home. I like to eat a lot of gluten-free, grain-free desserts and there’s this bakery here in LA called Sweet Laurel. They have my favorite desserts ever, they ship nationwide and they have a pre-boxed one too so, if you want to make it at home yourself, you can. I recently brought it over to a friend for Thanksgiving and it had all of these different desserts and I can't even tell that these are gluten-free and grain-free because of how delicious they are. You can box them up and make them at home and I definitely recommend trying them out!

DEMYSTIFYING BEAUTY | TRINNY WOODALL

October 25, 2022

For the past few months we have shared a cosmetic and skincare brand, Trinny London that looks great on our vanity but also focuses on keeping our skin looking radiant no matter our skin type. We wanted to find out more about the brand and how its founder, Trinny Woodall created the brand and what we have to look forward to from this beauty line.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Before you created your beauty brand, can you tell us a bit about your background as we know you started as a fashion and makeover expert! As a fashion stylist, I have actually seen you on What Not to Wear on BBC.

TRINNY WOODALL: I started my career in media for twenty-years and first established myself as a fashion advisor, initially as a columnist for The Daily Telegraph, and later as a co-host for What Not to Wear and The Trinny and Susannah makeover shows, filmed across 20 countries and viewed by over 30 million women. In 2007, I founded Trinny London on a mission to give everyone the tools they need to feel their best.

AM: What is your approach to style when it comes to dressing others and yourself?

TW: On Sundays, I like to put together outfits for the week ahead, I don’t like to worry about what I’m going to wear. I like to mix patterns and prints and be creative with my looks. Sometimes, I also love matchy matchy! For decades I was led by style rules, but I now follow one mantra for clothes: ‘Does it make me happy?’ If you feel happy in what you’re wearing, you will radiate happiness to those around you and that’s what dressing should be about.

AM: With your success in TV and in fashion, what led you to launching Trinny London?

TW: I was inspired to launch Trinny London after struggling to find a suitable makeup brand or counter in a department store. I saw a gap in the market for stackable, portable and premium makeup and spent four years perfecting the products, while developing the brand’s signature Match2Me algorithm, an online tool that helps our customers find the right shades for their complexion.

AM: I remember trying out the makeup first and love the concept of how they stack together – who is the Trinny London customer?

TW: Before I launched Trinny London, I felt there were a lot of age 35+ women who were being ignored by the main market. We never use professional models for our marketing campaigns, we like to prioritize realism over aspiration, which is why our brand appeals to older women who feel under-represented in the beauty industry. Our products are suitable for all ages and skin types, but we wanted to ensure the brand was catering towards the 35+ demographic, creating a unique point of difference from other premium brands in the space.

AM: Why did you want to include skincare within this line?

TW: I’ve always been passionate about skincare and spent years suffering from acne. Through my work with thousands of women around the world for over twenty years, I’ve interviewed hundreds of skincare experts, tried thousands of skincare products and spoken to millions of women every week about their skincare dilemmas and aspirations. With skincare, I wanted to provide customers with a clear way of understanding it, so that you can actually diagnose what you should do. My goal is to demystify the world of skincare by dividing it into easy-to-understand chapters so that our consumers fully understand what their skin needs are, which is why we’ve launched one skincare category at a time.

AM: The packing and fun colors that are found in the skincare are really the ultimate in the perfect shelfie or sitting on your vanity - how do you decide what colors should be with what product?

TW: We want to make a skincare routine a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone, which is why we created joyful and colorful packaging that is also sophisticated, so you’ll want to keep it out on your vanity and pick it up every morning and night.

AM: I remember attending a few of your virtual launches and I would always messaging your PR team about new products that I thought would be natural progressions and so far, you have been checking off my list – can you tell us about additional products that will be coming to the line?

TW: As this goes to press, we are launching our most innovative serum called Plump Up and we have done alot of clinical trials on this peptide serum which increases skins firmness and elasticity by 64% and it’s a game-changer in anyones routine and you can layer it by alot of different products! I’m so excited by it! I think I’m most excited by this than anything we’ve ever launched.

AM: What are your 3 favorite go-to products for Trinny London?

TW: I obviously love all of our products, but our BFF Rebalance is really special to me. When I suffered from badly congested skin, it was so difficult to find a product that gave me enough coverage, wasn’t too shiny, and would actually not make my skin worse by wearing it. This product delivers just the right amount of coverage while helping to tackle congested skin. Our Miracle Blur is a continuous bestseller and what we call our little pot of wonder. Not just a miracle by name, the creamy, colorless formula blends effortlessly into the skin for a seamless base to smooth fine lines, pores and acne scars. Another go-to product is our Lip2Cheek. It’s matte and perfect for giving your lips a little stain that will leave you looking gorgeous.

AM: When you're not working on Trinny London, how do you take time for yourself to recharge your batteries?

TW: I either have downtime with my daughter, Lyla and we just go shopping or go we in the car and we play loud music. Sometimes, when I’ve got something on that I’m worried or stressed about I will tidy my cupboards and I find it very therapeutic. When I’m really relaxed and my brain has space, I do the New York Times crossword because it gets challenging each day of the week and I feel that need to challenge my brain so I get stimulated by that and when I’m doing the crossword I know its a point where I’m really relaxed, I’m on holiday or I’m having a day off where I totally tuned out from work.

RINGING IN DIWALI WITH GLOW OF LIFE

October 21, 2022

Avid readers of Athleisure Mag know that we recently included an interview on Deepica Mutyala of Live Tinted in the SEP ISSUE #81 of Athleisure Mag in Living in Her Tint. This is a brand that we have personally enjoyed using as we have incorporated into our look whether it’s for color correcting, giving that bronzed shimmer and having a primer to prep our skin.

Just in time for Diwali which is a festival of lights, the brand has a new limited edition Glow of Life Kit which honors this holiday that takes place on Oct 24th! It honors two cultures and tqo queens, South Asian-American influencer-turned-CEO Deepica and Nigerian-born American beauty influencer-turned CEO Jackie Aina of FORVR Mood have come together to celebrate the fetical o flights through the exchange of knowledge and product discovery. This product is a collaboration between Deepica and Jackie and is available on both sites. The set includes HUEGLOW in Dusk & Forvr Mood’s newly-released scent Spice of Life. Getting them separately, it would cost $72. Buying it as a set on either site, the limited edition kit is just $57!
