FIVE TIPS FOR GETTING BACK INTO SHAPE AFTER SUFFERING AN INJURY OR ILLNESS

April 20, 2022

There are very few things that can set you back like an illness or injury. It could be particularly frustrating if you were keeping to a strict exercise or weight loss regimen or just on the verge of starting one. We all know how much preparation and effort goes into putting a new wellness plan together. When life throws a spanner in the works, it can be a real uphill struggle to get back to where you wanted to be.

Exercise is essential for our health in so many ways, and being denied it can be so tough. But bouncing back is not always as simple as hopping off the sofa and going for a jog. However, with a little more preparation and willpower, there are plenty of ways to help you to get back into better physical and mental shape. Sometimes it takes some work, which is why we have put together this list of tips to help you get there.

Be Honest With Yourself About Where You Are

When you are in the final stages of your recovery, it can be tempting to tempting to try and jump ahead. We tell ourselves that we are basically ready, so why not get started? The first to remember if you are trying to get back into shape after some medically enforced time off is to listen to what your body is telling you. And more importantly, listen to what your doctor is telling you. If they are saying that you need another few days of rest, then take those days. You do not want to end up back where you started because you rushed out before you were ready.

Think About Your Diet Carefully

When you are suffering from an illness or injury, it is only natural that you would lean on your go-to comfort foods and drinks. When you are trying to bounce back, it can be very tough to go cold turkey and get into a healthier diet regimen. However, watching what you eat and giving your body what it needs will go a long way towards helping you to get back into shape. Think about what you can do to cut down on some of those problem foods, and think about how you can start to add nutritional support for your exercise. There are a lot of different fitness supplements out there, and it is so important to find one that contains ingredients that work. The phrase performance-enhancing supplements is a little dramatic when what they are doing is giving your body the building blocks it needs to operate at its best. To learn more about supplements and protein, check out the resources at Ingredient Optimized.

Start A Plan From Scratch

If you are trying to get back into shape after several weeks or months out of action, you will have to realize that the fitness plan you had before will need some reworking. One of the most important elements of any good fitness plan is setting yourself achievable goals. Talk to your doctor about the shape that you are looking to get into and see if they have any timeframe suggestions. It will also be worth talking to a personal trainer about putting together a fitness plan that will get you back into the kind of shape that you want to be in. Remember that it is much better to take things slowly than rush and not meet those unrealistic targets.

Get A Friend Involved

Now, this may not necessarily apply to those of us who prefer to exercise completely alone. However, if you find that you could use a little extra motivation to get back out there and back into an exercise regimen, it may be time to reach out to a friend or family member to see if they want to join you. There is a lot to be said for having a little friendly competition, so even if you are not working out together, you can still think about sending each other your updates on a fitness app to see who is pulling ahead.

Stay Positive

It can be tough when we find that we are not capable of the same things that we used to be. The path to recovery is not always speedy, and there are going to be days when you will be frustrated by what you are able to do. The important thing is that you remember that this is a journey, and each step you take is a step forward, even if it does not always feel like it. Do not let a bad day get you down. We have all learned so much about mental health recently, and we have seen just how much people in the US are struggling right now. Keep talking to your friends and family about how you are doing, and remember that you can always adjust your goals if you need to. Keep on building with small steps, and you will get to where you are going.
