CASE 63

Spotify Original + Gimlet

Spotify

We love a truly bingeable podcast that you could listen to in an afternoon while you're going about your day. Case 63 is a futuristic and yet current story that bends space and time as Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina, Scenes From a Marriage, Moon Knight) and Julianne Moore (The Hours, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The Hunger Games Franchise) navigate a doctor-patient relationship that has the highest stakes in terms of maintaining the future of the world.

For the listener, we're taken on a society that has just come out of the same pandemic that we navigated; however, the time traveler is actually trying to head off the next pandemic that is a distant variant from COVID. In addition, the podcast is rooted in questioning what we know and what we are able to grapple with and what happens when the things that we find make us understand that we have to step out on faith to do what we may not know in order to move forward.

The twists that take place in this podcast are those that we hope will bring about a second season and the dynamics between these two powerhouses are truly an audible pleasure to listen to.

LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE

Netflix Original

Netflix

A few years ago, we read Luckiest Girl Alive from Jessica Knoll and was hooked from the first page. It feels like a story that begs to be made into a film. In Netflix's Luckiest Girl Alive, we meet Tifani FaNelli played by Mila Kunis (Black Swan, Bad Moms, Ted) who is a successful 30-something newspaper gossip columnist who is living the life in NY. She is about to leave her job to take a Senior Editor position at The New York Times Magazine.

She is set to marry her husband Luke Harrison, played by Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story franchise, The Big Short, La La Land). This defintiely has the makings of a storybook life.

But not everything is as it seems as Tiffani has a few things in her past that are bubbling up when a true crime documentary comes out that shares the details of an incident that took place at a private boarding school. Tifani has information that isn't known and it is now threatening her life.

MUMBAI CRIME

Radiotopia from PRX

Apple Podcast

We do love a podcast episode that is under 20 minutes. Mumbai Crime takes us on a journey that gives us the sights and sounds of Mumbai through the eyes of Thomas who is playing Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for 1,000,000,000 Rupees. Each episode in this 10 part thriller has him answering a question and giving us insight into his life and what ultimately brought him to the show.

This is another podcast that has audio gems that places the listener into the very world that he is sharing with us. It also has a few twists and turns that bring it all together.

DR DEATH.jpg

DR. DEATH

Peacock Original

Peacock

We enjoyed the first season of Wondery's Dr. Death podcast which talked about the destructive and murderous Dr. Christopher Duntsch who terrorized unsuspecting patients in Dallas, Texas with surgeries that left them more uncomfortbale then when they started, paralyzed and in some cases dead. This successful podcast has been turned into a series that's perfectly bingeable on Peacock.

In this series, we find out about how Duntch's past ultimately created an individual who would take his narcissistic behavior, risky surgeries and the ability to use his charm to advance in his career.

We also get insight into how he was ultimately taken down by the efforts of two doctors and a legal system that had to navigate how they approached doctors who work in such a negligent way as well as how they created checks and balances to better monitor the medical community as a means to advocate for patients rights.

For those who enjoyed the podcast, this series is a great way to learn more about portions of the story that were not covered.

THE CONTROL GROUP.jpg

THE CONTROL GROUP

iHeartMedia

iHeartRadio

The second season of The Control Group is a fictional podcast about a nuclear event that takes place in a city. Throughout the episodes, we find out how an entire town either lives in their bunkers or go to an area shelter. With little information being shared, they all listen to a radio station to find out what is taking place and to prepare for their next steps.

As we learn more about the main characters which includes a family, a stranger that happens to be caught up in the events that have unfolded as well as the military, we learn that there is more going on then what is being shared. How much of the nuclear episode is real and how big is it? What's happening outside of the town that this is taking place and will life return to normal? The Control Group looks at how people operate under distress when it is initiated by forces that are meant to protect those that they serve.

BEHIND HER EYES BS.jpg

BEHIND HER EYES

Netflix Original Series

Netflix

Last holiday, we all heard how there will be at least 1 new movie or series brought to Netflix. Since we're all navigating being at home and staying entertained, we suggest this very bingeable show that is based on the book of the same name.

Behind Her Eyes is a psychological thriller that takes dreaming, love triangles and the sins of the past to new levels. We're introduced to 3 main characters whose lives are intertwined in a way that even they don't completely understand. This limited series is filled with twists and turns and is definitely worth paying attention to so that you don't miss the clues.

FLACK a BS.jpg

FLACK

Amazon

We all have a celebrity that we enjoy catching up with as we scroll through our social feeds. It's interesting to see what they're up to. FLACK looks at the world of celebrity through the lens of PR and specifically, Crisis Management. We follow Robyn, an American who works at a British firm who ensure that their clients navigate their messy lives. In each episode of the first season, we seethe firm spring into action at each disaster that comes their way.

In addition to watching how they're able to keep their clients from completely spinning out of control, we see that their lives are just as messy and complicated as the ones that they are trying to take care of.

The balancing act of celebrities misbehaving and juggling their own lives make this an easy sea-son to watch while we wait for the 2nd season to come to the platform later this year.

Sandra.jpg

SANDRA
Gimlet Media

When we ask Siri, Google, Cortana to sing us a song, check our calendars or to tell us the time - we simply make our requests and receive an answer that points us in the right direction. But who are these assistants that we use? Where does this information come from and how do we keep getting it?

Sandra is a podcast from Gimlet Media that delves into the person or people behind these assistants. In Oklahoma, there is an office where Sandra is actually a number of people that are able to provide you information in her voice but who have a number of personalities and issues that they are dealing with.

One of the many people who play Sandra begins the podcast looking for a job and a means to live her best life, gets her dream job and due to being her best self as Sandra, finds herself not only on the outside looking in but becoming close with one of the users who has plans of his own that can harm someone in his life.

Sandra tackles the nature of identities, what it means when human behaviour merges with technology and what we do when it's time to make the right call and to add a personal touch.
