Vanessa We know that the summer is coming and with that comes the realization, for some that they need to get on it when it comes to showcasing the summer body that has been under layers for the last few weeks. Whether you've been a Disciplined Debbie or a Late to the Party Lucy, we sat down with Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, and gastrointestinal issues and was formerly a Senior Dietitian at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC.Rissetto, RD who specializes in Weight Loss Management and Medical Nutrition Therapy as it pertains to diabetes, cardiac disease
As you work on the physical goals of your summer body, Vanessa shares with us how to get our food plan in sync whether you've been diligent or just starting!
Summer bodies are made in the winter… at least that’s what my trainer tells me.
Well, I’ve got news for him - Mother Nature hasn’t been on her meds this winter, so most of us have been hibernating more than usual since November. And, if you’re like me and you’ve been getting your cardio by pushing your cart down the aisles of your local grocery store, then I’m sure you’ve noticed that how, er, unappealing the produce is looking these days, while over in the chip aisle that strategically placed new Doritos flavor has never looked so good! Spoiler Alert: yes sometimes I do eat Doritos, and Original is still the best.
HOWEVER, this is not the time for Doritos (new or original), or cookies, or wine, or any of that fun stuff we have been making excuses for because it was from Thanksgiving, or a holiday party, or Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are getting married.
Summer is upon us, people, and you're either going to be cool and comfortable basking in the sun with your shoulders exposed, or you're going to be searching for the a/c while hiding in leggings, and tunics. Side note - my daughter, who is six, only wears leggings, she doesn't see any reason for trying to squeeze into jeans when leggings are way more comfortable - her words not mine; clearly I’m raising a confident genius.
Wait, where were we… oh right, summer bodies - DUH! Which is likely the reason you’re even still reading, hoping I get to the point soon! You want me to impart my pearls of wisdom so you can get to work on that summer body the Friday before Memorial Day. Don’t worry, I got you; and you got this, with a few tricks and tips to help.
Rome was NOT built in a day
Guys, if you’ve been boozing it up every weekend, and ordering a daily takeout, you’re not going to do well if you start to subsist on kale and lemon water all of a sudden. Let’s be realistic here - If you’re used to drinking 6 drinks over the weekend, let’s aim for 4 this weekend.
“How can I even do that,” you ask. “Going out to bars on the weekends is basically what keeps me sane, with my job/office drama/family/single life (delete as applicable).” Well, I am a realist! So here are my tips:
Firstly, only drink spirits - vodka, rum, tequila – pure, no mixers. You’ll find you’ll drink less, which will make you consume fewer calories but still get your weekend buzz. And, if you’re tempted to drink more, (we’ve all had THOSE weeks) order a seltzer in between each drink since that will make you feel full, while disguising the fact that you aren’t really drinking. Which leads me to my next point.
Plan ahead
OK, I know that wasn’t the perfect segue way, but I’ll try to come up with something more clever for the next one… So, you know when you’re watching RHONY and Ramona and Bethany are fighting over some nonsense that is the same nonsense they've been fighting over since the show's inception? This is the perfect moment for step two!
This is the time where I pick up my phone and start scrolling around for recipes that are quick and easy. Now I KNOW you’re on your phone while you watch TV, so instead of searching around IG and ending up on Beyonce’s mother’s European vacation, navigate towards pages that can actually help you. I personally love @SkinnyTaste for her easy recipes, @AllRecipes has pretty quick delicious meals, and you could also visit my page - @VanessaRossettoRD - but that would be a shameless plug and I wouldn’t do that sort of thing.
But do your own searches, find the things you like, and – if it’s really great, send it to me on IG in my comments, I’m always looking for new recipes!
To the Store!
Now that you’ve planned ahead, you can shop!
Meal prep is less daunting if you know what you’re making. Staples on my grocery list are: eggs, oats, almond milk, arugula, lemons, limes, avocados, onions, garlic, raspberries (8 g fiber per 1 cup when you’re craving something sweet), individually portioned 100 calorie bags of nuts, skinny pop (individually portioned bags), mini Kind bars (100 calories), non-fat Greek yogurt, peanut butter packets (Justin’s has 80 calorie individual packs), frozen bags of broccoli, green beans, and frozen cauliflower rice.
I then add in ingredients from the recipes I found.
My tip here is to plan 3 proteins, 1 starch, and 6 servings of vegetables that you can have on hand at home for dinners when you get home. That way when you come home from a long day, you don't have to stare into the abyss that is your fridge wondering what to eat - especially when it probably doesn't have any food INSIDE it right now anyway, but has plenty of those takeout menus stuck to the OUTSIDE, amirite? If your fridge is stuffed full of delicious food, you will heat it up and eat it instead of making that tempting call to your favorite pizza place. Trust me this is a way to avoid temptation, save money, and limit waste.
Get out there and exercise
Exercise will definitely help your summer body cause. But it’s also really good for your brain. And, it’s a great way to break up your day and stop you from raiding your cabinet, you know, the one with all the chocolate. If you’re looking longingly at your cabinet where you hid the cookies but the weather outside is nice, then even going out for a quick 30-minute walk is a win. It shifts your focus, makes you feel good and by the time you come back, you probably won't want those cookies anyway.
35 opportunities for greatness!
Look at your week as a succession of chances to reach your goal: you have 35 of them, actually. Every day, you get to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner and two snacks – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. That means you have 5 chances a day, and 35 chances a week to eat well! And, if you can eat well about 33 of those 35 times, you should be able well on your way to that summer body.
And for those of you thinking to yourself “eat well” is not a tip, anyone can say that! Here are some specific guidelines: have 1-2 cups of vegetables at your lunch and dinner, make sure the serving size of carbohydrates is no more than about ¼-½ cup, and don’t drink your calories, try to keep to water and seltzer (or fizzy water as my kids call it).
Follow these five tips to get you ready for the summer, and you’ll see the difference – and whenever you decide to cast aside your leggings and tunic and dip your toes in the ocean, I’ll be right there with you.
See you on the beach!

Many times, when we ask our friends and those interviewed in our issues, we always hear about them using Perricone MD, which is a line of beauty items that focus on fighting the signs of aging. We're always excited to see what is next with the brand. In addition to skincare, Dr. Nick Perricone has now included hydrogenated water. We're so pleased to share our interview with this innovator.
ATHLEISURE MAG: Many of our readers are familiar with you and your brand, Perricone MD in terms of beauty. Please tell us about how you got into the beauty industry as well as what was
the moment that initiated you creating a skincare line?
DR. NICK PERRICONE: My initial quest to find ways to stop, prevent and reverse the negative effects of inflammation in my dermatology patients led the foundation for Perricone MD. My
scientific studies have resulted in 150+ US and international scientific patents for the treatment of skin and systemic disease, for reversing and preventing damage to skin caused by factors
such as age, the sun, the environment, and hormonal changes. Because my focus is on treating the underlying inflammation as the causative factor, my research focuses on utilizing antioxidants, which act as natural anti-inflammatories from nutritional substances, in topical formulations.
My goal is to treat aging and the signs of aging, including aging skin as a disease— rather than just cover up the problems, because chronic, sub-clinical inflammation (invisible to the eye)
the root of many diseases associated with aging, including aging skin. And so my goal is to reduce inflammation at the cellular level through the creation of a three-tiered anti-inflammatory program consisting of:
1. Anti-inflammatory diet
2. Anti-inflammatory nutritional supplements
3. Anti-inflammatory topicals
Therefore, creating topicals that also act as antioxidants, nature’s natural anti-inflammatories, was and continues to be my inspiration.
AM: Your skincare line includes topical products as well as supplements - why is this an essential mix in terms of taking care of and maintaining your skin?
DR. NP: Supplements and topicals work synergistically and therefore I recommend that we take antioxidants and vitamins as supplements and apply them topically as well.
To receive therapeutic amounts of certain nutrients, such as alpha lipoic acid, supplementation is necessary because it is difficult to get adequate amounts from the foods we eat. Luckily, nutritional supplements have come a long way from the minimal, “one-a-day” multivitamins of past generations.
Now we have highly targeted antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals that can do everything from sharpening our brain power, repairing cells, and burning fat to increasing
muscle tone, restoring memory and heightening libido. Many of these super antioxidants penetrate right into the cell where they combat free radicals and decrease inflammation. Because of this, the right supplements can keep us much younger than our chronological years.
Supplements of high quality can (in addition to the anti-inflammatory diet) create beauty from the inside out. Nutrients that possess anti-oxidant properties act as natural anti-inflammatories.
I recommend a variety of nutrients that are designed to work synergistically to enhance the benefits of the anti-inflammatory diet. These nutrients offer anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and fat metabolizing boosting benefits and help prevent and reverse oxidative damage on a cellular level, of critical importance as we age. The same level of repair cannot be achieved through diet or topicals alone.
AM: A number of celebs we have talked to, introduced us to Dr, Perricone Hydration Water - when did you realize that this is an area you wanted to include within your brand?
DR. NP: When I was first introduced to hydrogen as a therapeutic substance more than five years ago, and learned of its powerful antioxidant properties, I recognized an affordable, available and non-toxic solution to many of the chronic, debilitating diseases and accelerated
signs of aging that currently plague both children and adults the world over.
AM: Hydrogen Water has been a trend on the rise and many would assume that this ingredient is already in water, is there more of this element - what makes hydrogen water so different then what we drink at home or purchase in stores?
DR. NP: When hydrogen is infused in water, at measurable therapeutic levels, it provides instantly available benefits, positively affecting gene regulation and gene expression, while silencing negative genes. For the past three decades my life has been devoted to researching the mystery of aging. As a dermatologist, finding therapeutic interventions for aging skin has
been a particular interest and passion. In my first book I wrote about the importance of beauty from the inside out and how low-grade inflammation works nonstop to degrade all organ systems — including the skin. Nothing has excited me more than the discovery of hydrogen and hydrogen-infused water. I have never seen anything that has so much activity, giving us increased physical and mental energy on a cellular level, while providing superior protection from free radicals—a major contributor to wrinkled, sagging skin.
AM: How is Dr Perricone Hydration Water different then other hydrogen offerings in the market?
DR. NP: There are other forms of hydrogen water available - in stick and tablet form, in pouches and other types of containers.
Perricone Hydrogen Water is regularly tested to insure efficacious levels of hydrogen. Cans are specially designed with a polymer coating to contain and protect the hydrogen water ensuring that you receive optimum levels of hydrogen.
AM: Why should someone drink Dr Perricone Hydration Water and what are the benefits of consuming it?
DR. NP: Before now a natural beauty and energy drink which enhances the mood and at the same time make us more awake — without being over-stimulated as is seen when ingesting
caffeinated and sugared drinks, did not exist. Thanks to the discovery of hydrogen water we now have a safe and effective way to increase energy levels and focus, both mental and physical, in a safe and effective manner, while increasing feelings of well-being. And without the jitters or any of the unpleasant side effects found in traditional energy drinks.
• No Calories
• No Sugar
• No Caffeine
• No Artificial or harmful ingredients, coloring or additives of any kind
• Portable, can go anywhere, work, gym, play
• Increases productivity safely
• Instant, convenient no preparation involved
Just pure water infused with molecular hydrogen.
The benefits of hydrogen water include the following:
• Has beneficial effects on all organ systems including the skin
• Natural antioxidant/anti-inflammatory
• Increased energy
• Improved athletic performance
• Increased endurance
• Speeds muscle recovery
• Increased sense of well-being
• Enhanced cognitive function
• Reduced travel fatigue
• Protects against the effects of intoxicants
AM: How does this water play well with the family of products that you offer at Perricone MD?
DR. NP: Its powerful antioxidant properties make it the perfect complement to topicals creating beauty from the inside out.
AM: How much Hydrogen Water should be consumed throughout the day/week?
DR. NP: Three 8.3 ounce cans or two 12 ounce cans daily. After a vigorous workout you can follow with another eight or 12 oz can later in the day.
AM: You have always been at the forefront of great skin from product offerings, your patients and as an author. What other products should we keep an eye out from you on as we continue into 2018.
DR. NP: A higher potency Cold Plasma as well as a focus on hydrogen topicals.
AM: If you could create an essential kit of must haves for skin, what would you suggest should be in it?
DR. NP: Hydrogen water, supplements formulated by a reputable company and topicals with antioxidant properties.
AM: With cold temperatures rising, how should we protect our skin from the elements?
DR. NP: Winter often brings us dry skin, which is actually a manifestation of chronic sub clinical (invisible to the eye) inflammation. For optimum resolution, follow the three – tiered anti-inflammatory program, which consists of anti-inflammatory foods, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant supplements and topical anti-inflammatory anti-oxidants. While topicals can do wonders, it is of critical importance to not forget the dietary component which can both cause and make worse all of these conditions. Alpha lipoic acid as a topical is great because it normalizes the skin.
You can counter the causes of dry, flakey skin internally through a healthy diet and by taking nourishing, antioxidant-rich supplements and topicals that contain Alpha lipoic acid. ALA works synergistically with other antioxidants in the skin to reduce the damaging inflammatory
effects of ultraviolet radiation. Its antioxidant properties act as natural anti-inflammatories to counter the dry flaky skin.
Also take essential fatty acids in the form of omega 3 fish oil capsules and make sure to include cold water fish such as salmon, nuts and seeds and coconut oil in your daily diet.
AM: For those of us that travel frequently, what should be in our carry-on to ensure that are skin glows and doesn't have the tired looking effects of long and sometimes delayed travel!
DR. NP: A special note on travel fatigue:
The drinking of hydrogen infused water can have a dramatic effect on people who are travel fatigued and sleep deprived. Drinking 8 to 12 ounces of this water can relieve symptoms in 30 minutes to one hour.

A regular skincare routine is a must for every man. It’s more important, however, for those who love sports. Sporty men sweat a lot and spend a lot of time outdoors. With exposure to the heat of the sun, among other things, the skin can easily get damaged. With that, this post will tackle some of the best things that can be done to take care of your skin.
Use a Razor Bump Cream
A lot of sporty men tend to have rough skin. For some, this is aggravated by the presence of razor bumps. To prevent the latter, one thing that can be done is to use a razor bump removal cream, such as the one that you can find at Frederick Benjamin. The latter will soothe and moisturize the skin, which will minimize the likelihood that you will end up suffering from razor burns.
The razor bump cream from Frederick Benjamin can prove to be a good choice because it’s made of natural botanicals and not harsh chemicals.
Make Sunscreen your Best Friend
If you spend a lot of time training and playing outdoors, there is perhaps no other skincare product that is as important as a sunscreen. You should be careful in your selection of which product to choose, making sure that it has the prerequisites to provide the protection that your skin needs. For instance, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, the minimum SPF for sunscreen should be 30, which means that it will be able to screen up to 97% of UVB rays.
Cover Up
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, another good way by which it will be possible for athletes to take care of their skin is through having the right cover. Use fabrics that are tightly-woven or dark-colored. Look for clothes with Ultraviolet Protection Factor of at least 30. It will also be good to wear a visor or a cap to provide shade on your face. Also, consider wearing sunglasses that will block UV rays.
All about Timing
To take care of your skin while enjoying the sport that you love, it’s also best to choose the right time to be outdoors. As experts would suggest, if you have to do outdoor training, make sure that you do not do it between 10 am to 4 pm. Such is the time when the sun is at its peak, and hence, it can do the most damage to your skin. If you have to practice or play, do it early in the morning or late in the afternoon. This will also provide you with more energy and hydration compared to doing so when the sun is at its most glorious state.
A lot of men love being sporty, spending most of their time outdoors. Yes, it’s fun and good for your health. However, it can be bad for your skin. To prevent serious skin damages, keep in mind the things that have been mentioned above.

Starting a skincare routine can be a daunting task, especially if you’ve never really been into beauty and skincare before. There are so many skincare products and so much information out there that it can get overwhelming and pretty confusing to know exactly what you should put on your skin. That said, a solid skincare routine is essential to achieving healthy and beautiful skin. If you are a beginner to skincare and are interested in establishing a routine, here are a few tips to help you get started.
Feed Your Skin Only the Good
Nutritionists will often tell you that if you want a strong and healthy body, you’ll need to cut out the highly processed junk food and stick to “real,” wholesome and whole foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood and meat. It’s the same for your skin. If you want it to look clear and healthy and be in its best condition, you’ll have steer clear of harsh and harmful chemicals, and feed it only the finest ingredients. Well Within Beauty is a beauty and wellness brand that uses only the finest plant-based ingredients in their comprehensive range of natural beauty products.
They offer a comprehensive range of organic beauty products that will nourish your skin and leave it feeling healthy and pampered, and you won’t have to worry about any of them containing potentially toxic ingredients that could damage your skin or cause health issues.
Identify Your Skin Concerns
Each individual’s skin is unique, almost like our fingerprints. You won’t have the exact same skin type and skin concerns as everybody else. Take some time to figure out exactly what your areas of concern are, so you can better decide what kind of products you’ll need in your routine. Do you have excessively oily or dry skin? Do you suffer from acne or are you prone to blackheads? Is your skin very sensitive or reactive? Get to know your skin so you can narrow down your choices when it comes to what skincare products to add to your regimen.
Introduce the Basics
Everyone has individual needs, concerns and goals when it comes to skincare, but there are a few basic rules that apply to everyone, regardless of skin type, age or gender. First, you should start with a gentle yet effective cleanser. Choose one that can effectively get rid of sweat, dirt and excess oil without stripping your skin of its natural moisture and leaving it feeling tight and dry.
Second, choose a no-frills moisturizer that will keep your skin hydrated and plump without clogging your pores and causing breakouts. Don’t skip moisturizer even if you have an oily skin type. Keeping your skin properly hydrated actually helps to regulate oil production so that your skin doesn’t produce excess oil.
Lastly, you must absolutely use sunscreen every day, no matter what the weather. The sun’s harsh and harmful rays can damage your skin in many ways, including causing dark spots, fine lines, sunburn, and even skin cancer. Protect your skin by using a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, and choose a lightweight, non-greasy formula so you won’t feel uncomfortable wearing it every day.
Once you’ve gotten these three basic steps down, you can start adding products to your regimen as needed. Never put too many products on your skin, and introduce new products slowly, one at a time. Throwing everything on all at once can stress your skin out and result in sensitivities or breakouts. Just take it slow and be patient, and you should start to see results in about a month or so.
We're constantly talking about a number of trends in style, beauty, wellness and more. This month, we chatted with Celebrity Piercer and owner, Brian Keith Thompson of the famed Body Electric, which is Hollywood's destination for tattoos, body piercing and jewelry! We wanted to know more about trends that are taking place in body piercing, how he came into the business, who he has worked on (Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are just a few as well as who he'd love to include within his client list. We also want to know what we should look for, as those that may be getting piercings at their local studio.
ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us how you got into the world of piercing?
BRIAN KEITH THOMPSON: That’s actually a funny story. I was getting tattooed at Body Electric and, after five years of frequenting the place, it came up for sale and I bought it. I needed a job, so I started piercing. I didn’t realize I would actually fall in love with it and actually be good at it; I was just doing it to kind of pass the time and get the respect of the fellow employees by having something other to do than just make money and run the business.
And the better I got at it, the more I loved it; the more I loved it, the better I got at it.
AM: What is Body Electric, when did it start, what services are offered there?
BKT: Body Electric was started March 16, 1992 by a tattoo artist from Switzerland. I became the proprietor on June 11, 2006. I’ve owned it for 11 years. The services we offer are tattoo, body piercing, and jewelry sales. We don’t do anything other than those three things.
AM: Why is Body Electric such a destination that has a number of celebrities flocking to it?
BKT: I ask myself that question every day. I think it has to do with a lot of different things: (a) it’s been around for a long time, so it's kind of a pillar in the Hollywood tattoo community; (b) consistency and trust: like any business—be it a restaurant, retail story, tattoo-piercing studio—
you need to have consistency. And that consistency needs to be maintained month after month, year after year. And you need to maintain trust with your clients. If your clients trust you and you can maintain that trust, you can maintain your business and you will be there year after year. If you erode that trust, it’s just a matter of time before you’re closing your doors for good.
AM: We’re always talking about trends. Are there trends in piercing we should keep an eye out for as we continue into 2018?
BKT: Yes. Multiple dainty constellation-style piercings decorating the ears is very in right now—multiple locations, but doing it small, dainty, and with taste. Also, I think that asymmetry is going to continue to be a very popular trend. A lot of my clients aren’t wearing the same earring in both the first holes of their lobes. I’m seeing this a lot more. I’ve been an advocate for asymmetry for quite some time and I love to see that it’s catching on and people are embracing it, because you can have two different looks: your left ear has one look, your right has another. To me, that’s really cool to have that change of pace.
AM: For those who are looking to get their piercing done that won’t do so at Body Electric, what should be looked for in terms of sanitary work spaces and processes?
BKT: Start researching online. If you find a studio that doesn’t have a website, that’s the first red flag. If you find a studio that has a sprinkle of bad reviews, but the majority of them are good, that’s not a reflection on the studio. It’s usually a reflection on the clients.
If you see a lot of five-star reviews and then one star and then a fifteen fivestar reviews and another one-star, those are probably a specific client's attitude problem or just their taste—not liking the particular studio. You can’t make everyone happy all the time. (And why would you want to?).
If you see a studio that has nothing but two- and three-star reviews, one after another, and people are just voicing their concerns, that is a sign that maybe you should investigate further. Maybe walk into the establishment. If you walk in and it looks cluttered, it doesn’t smell good, the floor looks dingy, the employees look like they are really pissed and they don’t want to help you, just turn around and go find somewhere else. You will regret it if you don’t.
A clear sign of a functioning, good business is the employees are happy. If you walk in and everybody is miserable, that’s the sign of all signs. You’ll get a gut feeling. You’ll know when you’re in the right location. Everyone has a different taste and style. A studio that you like, someone else may not like. It doesn’t mean that you’re wrong or they’re right. It’s just your taste—you like this particular studio and that’s fine, too. But definitely look at the website. Find a piercer or a tattoo artist that likes your style.
Look at their portfolio. Do they do the style of work that you like? Do you see it in their portfolio? If they just tell you that they do a certain style of work and they’re good at it, that’s not enough. Somebody who is really good at a particular craft is going to have photos of that craft and if they’re doing it well, they are going to have multiple, different options for you to look at. A true professional is going to have this photo evidence readily available.
Not all artists use printed-out portfolios anymore. I don’t even have one. It’s mostly digital now. My portfolio is my Instagram. And that's okay. So just check their Instagram out. If you see things you like and you see that they can handle it, that's the best way to go forward, I think.
AM: Is there any recovery or upkeep that needs to be kept in mind after piercing a body part?
BKT: Absolutely. There’s months of aftercare and keep-up. I’ve said many times that getting a piercing is an instant gratification, but it can take months—sometimes up to a year—to heal a specific body part. And you have to have this in mind when you get pierced. “Do I have the time to care for this? Do I have the maturity to care for this? Do I have the patience for it?" All
of these factors in and sometimes it can be a "slow boat to China," but if you're patient and thorough, you can heal it and move on.
“... I think that asymmetry is going to continue to be a very popular trend. A lot of my clients aren’t wearing the same earring in both the first holes of
their lobes. I’m seeing this a lot more. I’ve been an advocate for asymmetry for quite some time and I love to see that it is catching on and people are
embracing it ...”
I would also say that if you're starting to get pierced, start with no more than three at a time. Heal those successfully and then move on. Doing too much too soon can just add to the problems that you may have healing.
AM: What celebrities have you worked on and who would you like to work on that you’ve not yet done so at this point?
BKT: I worked on Jennifer Lawrence multiple times, Emma Stone, FKA Twigs comes in quite often. I’ve done multiple piercings on her. I’ve pierced Beyoncé numerous times. I just recently pierced Adele. That was really cool. Those are a few of the celebrities I’ve been lucky enough to work with.
I was watching Saturday Night Live this past Saturday and Natalie Portman was hosting. I was losing it when she did that rap. There are a few close-ups of her and...funny, that's how much I
think about work... I'm watching this at home and thinking, "Wow, I'd like to pierce her ear.” I don’t know if that sounds weird or not, but sometimes I do that. I just see an ear and I think “Wow, that’s a really great look. I’d like to pierce that.” I told my girlfriend that I hope I get to pierce Natalie Portman.

For those that have battled the flu, you fight to get back on your feet by increasing your fluids, getting rest and trying any remedy that you may have come across. But did you know that there is such a thing as a Flu Recovery Facial that helps the recovery process! We chatted with Celebrity Esthetician Thai Morrison about this beauty must.
ATHLEISURE MAG: What is the flu facial?
THAI MORRISON: The Flu Recovery Facial consists of double cleansing with Kanvas Flower Power Oil Wash to restore hydration and moisture to the skin. This process is followed up with the Kanvas md Polished Emollient Cleanser to exfoliate dead skin cells while executing an amazing sinus trigger point face massage. The next step involves applying the Kanvas Glow Mask and allowing it to sit for 10-15 minutes. The mask contains essential vitamins, oils and collagen to hydrate and plump the skin. While the mask is penetrating the skin, Kanvas Plump Gold Eye Pads are applied under the eyes to relieve puffiness and dark circles. Steam is applied. After thoroughly rinsing the mask, the skin is infused with Avené Thermal Spring Water to calm and soothe the skin. This is followed up with Kanvas Glow Cream moisturizer and Kanvas md Antioxidant Sunscreen Cream. We are all aware that the flu wreaks havoc on the skin and this facial aids in restoring vitality to the skin from essential elements lost during the process of recovering from the flu.
AM: Who (besides someone getting or currently has the flu) would be a good candidate for this?
TM: The Flu Recovery Facial is an excellent hydrating facial for anyone needing a hydration boost to their skin care routine. While the Flu Recovery Facial is targeted toward clients who need immediate impactful hydration results, the Kanvas skin care line accommodates all skin types and can be customized for essential skin care needs based on skin type. This facial is a great way to recover and look amazing going back to work or returning to your normal activities.
AM: How did you come up with this?
TM: This concept was derived as a direct result of having the flu and saw that my skin was dehydrated due to not being able to really eat or drink much. I noticed that a lot of my clients were also having the same issues with their skin and I found this treatment to be most effective.

Every year our skin goes through a number of cycles and we're always trying to figure out how to keep our skin soft and supple as lower temperatures can do a number on our faces! Take notes as we sat down with Dr. Evan Rieder to find out about a number of questions that we have from whether there's such a thing as over moisturizing, why the winter and summer affects our skin differently, Dry Brushing and products that we should have in our vanity! Of course, he also shares some tips that will assist our beauty goals regardless of the season that we're in!
ATHLEISURE MAG: What takes place in the body that makes skin drier in the winter versus the summer?
DR. EVAN RIEDER: It’s not so much the body as it is the environment that causes skin to become more dry in the winter than in the summer. Temperatures drop, humidity levels fall, and indoor heating systems tend to provide dry air. All of these factors can impair the skin barrier,
leaving it dry, scaly, cracked, and itchy.
AM: This change that takes place in the skin means that many times we have to change our moisturizers and lotions, what are ingredients that we should look for in our products to ensure that our skin continues to look moisturized and soft?
DR. ER: One ingredient that can help lock in moisture and keep skin soft during the winter months is Petroleum Jelly. An ingredient found in the new Dry Skin Relief expert repairing balm, it’s excellent at repairing your driest spots including stubborn dry patches on knees, elbows and heels.
For those with dry skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, products containing Colloidal Oatmeal can help relieve skin irritation. This is a key ingredient in the Dove DermaSeries Eczema Relief soothing body lotion.
AM: Is there such a thing as over moisturizing?
DR. ER: In a word, no, at least not for the majority of your body. If you suffer from dry skin, moisturization is the best way to repair the damaged skin barrier. Excess moisturizer could make skin sticky, making it uncomfortable to wear clothing. Though your clothes may become greasy, your skin would likely thank you for your efforts.
For the face, it depends on the products that you are using and your skin type. If you have oily skin and are noticing that you are developing acne, blackheads, and clogged pores, you might be using too much moisturizer. One way to prevent this is to make sure that your facial products are oil-free and non-comedogenic (which means that they don’t cause acne). The Dove DermaSeries Dry Skin Relief replenishing face cream is an excellent facial moisturizer that is not only gentle and non-comedogenic, but also provides protection from the sun.
AM: A number of people are talking about Dry Brushing your skin. Can you tell us what this is and what it is intended to do? Do you believe that this is something that is beneficial for skin?
DR. ER: Dry Brushing involves running a dry, soft-bristle brush over your bare skin in an upward motion toward your heart. This is said to increase blood flow and circulation, which will help your body and lymphatic system clear away toxins. Dry brushing is also thought to reduce cellulite and exfoliate, leaving your skin softer, more toned and better hydrated. Though there is no evidence for dry brushing in the medical literature, that doesn’t mean that it is not effective.
Particularly in people who may have extremely dry skin, dry brushing might soothe and help with exfoliation. I would be careful about the frequency in which you dry brush, as it could
potentially damage the skin barrier, especially in winter months where there is inadequate moisture in the environment. That being said, modified bathing habits and the use of an effective cleansers and topical moisturizers offer more evidence-based treatments for the skin.
AM: The Dove DermaSeries is a line filled with a number of products from cleansers to moisturizers. Can you tell us more about the repairing balm and what it does?
DR. ER: The Dry Skin Relief expert repairing balm is truly a one of a kind product in the Dove DermaSeries line. The silky, non-greasy formula provides fast dry skin relief and leaves skin looking healthier over time.
AM: In addition to using the products, what are additional methods that should be included in our skincare routine that will assist in keeping our skin moisturized (i.e. consuming x amount
of water, eating certain types of foods)?
DR. ER: Additional methods to keeping your skin hydrated include:
Use a humidifier to moisten the dry air coming from indoor heating systems
Maintain a healthy diet and eat foods high in water content may help hydrate your skin from the inside out. Try watermelon, cantaloupe, apples, oranges and watery veggies like celery,
tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots
Moisturize twice a day (night and day), and always immediately after bathing
Get the appropriate amount of sleep. That means at least 7-8 hours per night for the average person. Don’t underestimate the effects of proper sleep hygiene on your skin!
