The Lower East Side has a number of gems and we like the idea of uncovering a new find. One19 Wine Bar + Food is not only in the LES but is located speakeasy style behind a storefront at 119 Essex Street. Guests enter the store which is currently a deli and go to the back through the curtain where a 28 seat bar room (12 chairs wrap around a L-shaped bar) welcomes you.

Industry veterans Chef/Co-owner Matt Rojas (Rouge et Blanc, Eleven Madison Park) and Sommelier Gianni Cavicchi (Nice Matin), helm this new spot that is focused on Italian wines and Italian-inspired small plates.

They encourage and offer affordable wine at this destination which explores lesser-known grapes. Their wine on tap program offers an environmentally-friendly way to enjoy it with collapsible kegs which are recyclable and have a lower carbon footprint than bottles.

Sommelier Gianni utilizes his Italian heritage to create a list of wines that showcase smaller producers and lesser-known grape varietals that reflect the diverse terroirs of Italy. Most of the wines are organic, natural or biodynamic and you'll find that nothing on the list is more than $70.

You won't find Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot; however there are unknown and ancient varieties like Albana from Emila-Romagna, Trebbiano Spoletino from Spoleto in Umbria and Forastera and Biancolella from the island of Ischia to name a few.

We suggest the Freshest Flight in the City that features 4 wines on tap including three from the organically farming Emilia-Romagna producer Tre Monti: Frizzante (Pignoletto), Orange (Albana) and Rubicone (Sangiovese), along with Rooftop Reds Traminette from the Finger Lakes. Rooftop Reds will be the only non-Italian producer on the wine list. Guests will be able to scan a QR code on the table for detailed information about the wines.

Chef Matt serves Italian-inspired small plates with a New York twist. We suggest 3 dishes to pair with your wine: Pepperoni French Bread Pizza with roasted chilis and fontina; Fresh Burrata with smoked cherry tomatoes and pea pesto and a shareable Cheese & Meat Plate with Ricotta, Alisios and Castelrosso cheeses, Finocchiona Salami, Prosciutto Cotto, Speck, pickles and grilled bread.

Juicery Harlem came about in the pandemic year of 2020 when everything got shut down and the world was struggling to reopen. Sasha Hart and her husband Jay Vallo saw that their neighborhood needed a healthy juice bar option that would offer lunch specials as well and a safe comfortable space for the locals to hang out. They brought in their friend and trained chef Jappy Afzelius—who was awarded a New York Times review for his work at TSISMIS (he worked and trained under Alain Ducasse at Chez Allard Bistro in Paris and Benoit Bistro in New York) as a partner to help with the menu and bring his expertise from years in the culinary industry. They soft-opened on November 1st and so far the response from the locals has been amazing! They are loving the fresh juices and smoothies, acai bowls and avocado toast.

The starter menu is 5 juices, 5 smoothies, 2 shots and 3 food items. They worked with a nutritionist to make sure the mixes are not only tasty but also give the best nutritional value! For example, when it comes to juices, Rise n Green (Green Apple, Cucumber, Pineapple, Mint) is delicious, refreshing, and energizing, a perfect way to start your day. Golden Goodness (Orange, Baby Carrots, Red Apple, Ginger) is not only very tasty, but it also brings up anti-inflammatory properties and helps stimulate a healthy immune response. Having one juice or smoothie a day can bring invaluable health benefits in the long run. As for additions to the menu, they will be add seasonal items, like apple cider for the cold season, and offering new exciting juice and smoothie recipes every few months to their customers. There are plans for juice cleanses in the future.

We suggest that you try their signature Harlem Shake, Mangonana and Power Berry. In terms of shots, you should try the very popular Ginger Jolt as some stop by daily to get it. Another great option is Sweet Revenge. In addition to ginger and lemon mix, it also has strawberries, which give it a hint of sweetness.

They serve acai bowls, avocado toast and a tuna melt. The latter 2 items come with a side salad with coconut cream dressing and have been very popular.

They have created a fresh and multi-culturally inspired selection of dishes at NSA Noodle Bar. For their opening menu, they wanted to showcase the two most well-known noodle types; Japanese Ramen and Italian Pasta; and blend them in new and interesting ways to exemplify the best of both cuisines.

Guests can expect an intimate experience while savoring the tastes of their fusion dishes, featuring fresh pasta and ingredients. When dining at their restaurant, they decorated the space with pieces from local artists, and personal touches from everyone on their staff, from servers to the head chef.

For an appetizer, our 3 top picks are the Panko Takoyaki which takes the traditional Japanese Octopus Ball and gives them a Panko shell, frying them to bring out the inner texture and flavor of both; the Seasonal Gyoza is an in-house wrapped braised Pork Gyoza, served with Spicy Peanut Butter Sauce and the Miso Honey Burrata has a Buffalo Burrata glazed with their Miso-Honey Vinaigrette among a bed of grilled Grape Tomatoes and Toast Sticks.

For the noodles, we suggest the Uni Crème Angel Hair is their take on the classic cream sauce dish, with fresh Angel Hair and overlayed with Sea Urchin and a Panko crunch. We like that their Truffle Tonkotsu Ramen has a Braised Chashu Pork, surrounded by Naruto Tataki, a Shio Soft-boiled Egg and Menma, over a bowl of Truffle-infused Tonkotsu Broth. Finally, there is the Washugyu Garganelli, a mouth-watering Washugyu (Wagyu) tossed in fresh pasta, parmesan, and garlic.

For the finishing touch on your meal, you should try the Yuzu Cream Tart, a Yuzu-infused Pastry Cream topped with a Coconut Sugar Brulee in a Puff Pastry boat. Enjoy their Seasonal Gelato which has a creamy smooth texture, with an eclectic selection of flavors such as Early Grey, Fig and Sesame to name a few. The Matcha Tiramisu has Matcha-soaked Ladyfingers sunk in Mascarpone Cream and topped with Matcha-infused White Chocolate.

Over the past 19 months, we have figured out ways to get our workouts in from building up our home gyms, finding classes online, following our favorite influencers, and for some as studios have opened up, we have headed back to our favorite methods. Regardless of our choices, many of us have still stayed focused on maintaining our equipment at home while also investing in virtual classes as it's always good to have those on hand.

Brooklyn Kolache launched in Bed Stuy and recently opened a second location in the West Village. Kolaches are Czech-origin pastries made with yeast dough and an array of savory and sweet fillings popular in Texas. Portable, versatile and delicious, they are as essential to Texans as bagels are to New Yorkers. These pillowy pastries were initially brought to central Texas by Czech immigrants in the mid-1800s and originally they were sweet but savory versions developed over time. Modern day kolaches can be sweet with fillings like fruit jams, poppy seeds, cheese and streusel topping or savory with sausages, cheese, eggs and vegetables.

Every day, there are around 8-10 sweet and 8-10 savory options available. Flavors change with the seasons but signature ones are always available, like Poppyseed; Cherry and Sweet Cheese; Blueberry and Sweet Cheese, as well as savory Sausage, Jalapeño & Cheese; Texas Beef Sausage; Spinach & Feta, and more. Classic Jewish Delicatessen, PJ Bernstein Deli, opened in 1965 on the UES of NYC and is currently owned by The Slobodski Family since 1983. Current owner, Russian born Alex Slobodski was originally a cab driver who found refuge on his time off to enjoy the foods at this deli which reminded him of his home. He would also bring his family and when there was an opportunity by Mr. Bernstein for him to buy the restaurant as he was a loyal customer, he did so! The traditions of this eatery continues as Alex's son Steve and his grandson Eugene have taken over the operations and expanded by incorporating a delivery service as well as providing outside seating.

Known for their whopping pastrami sandwhiches like "The Classic Reuben" to homemade soups like the "Triple Delight" (consommé with beef kreplach, kreplach, matzoh ball, fine noodles, and carrots) and of course there are a number of classic staples of a Jewish Deli: homemade soups, stuffed cabbage, chicken liver pate and home gefilte fish. There are also vegetarian and vegan options that are available as well.

In addition to coming for favorite comfort foods and enjoying a filling bite, there are also popular dishes to enjoy as we continue to navigate the summer. The team at PJ Bernstein suggests that you enjoy some of their popular dishes right now includes cold summer borscht and a classic pastrami sandwich with a cold beer. It's also a great place to have a turkey or a corned beef sandwich.

Only in NY does scaffolding at Hudson Yards become an installation that is unticketed and open to the public with a whimsical lemon grove that is comprised of surreal sculptures, lighting displays and seating that you can enjoy with a group of friends and family or when you're solo!

Citrovia is 30,000sqft with 700 plaster lemons, and there are steel and foam painted leaves. Here visitors can guarantee to have a sunny and rainless experience. It's made possible due to One Manhattan West, a 70 story skyscraper is not only completed but occupied. THe sister tower Two Manhattan West, is shorter and currently under construction with its completion slated for 2023. When it comes to scaffolding, you either have large monstrosities that tend to be an eyesore or you begin to think about doing it in a way it in a way that is pleasing.

Evan Schechtman, founder of Cuttlefish Inc. and Warren Adcock, Creative Director of Midnight Theatre took on the task to transform the scaffolding to a 40ft tall lemon grove that was made by hand at Adirondack Studios in upstate NY. They are known for their work at attractions that you have enjoyed at Disney!

Their creation marries whimsical with functionality as people can enjoy interactive augmented reality games, a place to unwind, an urban playground and even educational elements with Little Lemons in the Big Apple which is a collaboration that brings Brookfield Properties and the Salvadori Center together.

Guests can stroll the area and find themselves at Moynihan Train Hall, Whole Foods, 2 Danny Meyer concepts as well as having a place to gather and enjoy Instagrammable moments. It's worth noting that no two lemons looks alike and it's accessible to residents and visitors. It's a no-brainer that in the summer, this will be a great place for everyone to enjoy. With the fall and winter, we think this will be great for those that are looking to get a visual pick me up when they need to get a bit of "sun" and citrus relief.

As we all embrace getting back into travel, we're adding some stops to our list! Crystal Springs Resort boasts 2 properties that allow you to be one with nature while taking in a myriad of activities.

The AAA 4 Diamond Grand Cascades Lodge is a newly renovated luxury hotel set amid lush natural surroundings. The majority of the rooms are suites with a full kitchen and balconies. The Biosphere was the first structure of its kind in the U.S. to incorporate advanced German Foiltec roofing material, allowing nearly 100% light transmission for year-round natural tanning. The roof also retracts in the summer months.

We caught up with Beth Chee Marketing Director of Birch Aquarium Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Birch Aquarium is not only a place to see aquatic life and ocean views, but it shares the excitement of cutting-edge, world-class scientific discovery.

The Hall of Fishes features more than 60 habitats where guests can get up close to amazing ocean creatures including Leopard Sharks, eels, jellies, a Giant Pacific Octopus, and our rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtle. Don’t miss the two-story Giant Kelp Forest, or the sea babies in our nursery — from Garibaldi to baby sharks and seahorse.

Their newest exhibit is a 600-gallon cylindrical Moon Jelly experience in the Hall of Fishes and is unique in how it curves out into the walkway, where even the littlest guest can go face-to-face with these stunning creatures.

Jellies are not the strongest swimmers and are technically a type of plankton, which means they go with the flow, rather than against it! They rely on ocean currents in order to swim around, which is where the cylindrical shape comes from — It's specifically designed with these planktonic drifters in mind! The round shape of the experience, along with the water flow, creates a current that helps the jellies drift!

Guests can also enjoy additional exhibits such as Seadragons & Seahorses, where they learn about these charismatic creatures and get a peek into the work that the Husbandry Team is doing to ensure their survival and the MPA Touch Pools on Tide Pool Plaza, where guests can get hands-on with tidepool creatures including juvenile sharks, sea anemones, sea cucumbers, and other local species — all while learning about the areas' local Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

In the fall, the Moon Jellies will be replaced by iridescent ctenophore jellies, in a celebration of living light.

The safety of their staff, guests and volunteers are a high priority. They are continuing to require masks indoors and out. They are currently limited to a capacity of 50 percent and require advanced reservations for a specific date and time, to minimize crowding.

There is currently no re-entry, but you are able to stay in the aquarium as long as you would like. There are two designated eating areas, where masks may be removed, and you are welcome to bring your own food, or to purchase from Splash Café by the French Gourmet. If you can't make it in person, there are a number of virtual activities including the Kelp Cam and Seadragon Cam to name a few.

Little Chef Little Café opened Nov 2019 and is known for an extensive menu that rotates frequently. Customers can enjoy a mix of healthy comfort food and baked goods with salads, soups, smoothies, bowls, rice bowls, waffle sandwiches, toasts, pastries and Filipino-inspired tacos.

In addition to coffee and tea, they have special herbal teas too, like a house-brewed ginger tea made with fresh ginger that is pressure-cooked, blended, and strained. Lemon juice and honey are added and this is a version of a Filipino Salabat. It's served hot or iced and is great since ginger is great for cleansing, healing, and has many health benefits.

For those that are vegetarian or vegan, there are options on the menu for this as well. One of the favorites is the Anti-ox Salad with kale, mixed greens, red cabbage slaw, seasonal roasted vegetables, hemp seeds, and raw pepitas. The dressing is house-made from basil, cilantro, scallions, garlic, dates, lime juice, and oil. Customers really enjoy these dressings! All dressings are made in-house and packed with flavor. There is always a vegan soup like the Hearty Lentil or Sinigang, a Filipino tamarind-based soup with tomatoes, potatoes, tofu, green beans and bok choy. And for their Filipino tacos, which are offered individually at the café or in DIY kits to go (simple and fun to make at home: 3-20 tacos with fried wonton shells or classic gluten-free corn tortillas and spicy pickled pineapple), they offer a vegan filling: Veggie Ginataang, vegetables sautéed in coconut milk, along with fillings like Pork Adobo or Chicken Adobo.

It's worth noting that nothing is fried, many items are gluten-free and dairy-free, and they make sure to have plenty of plant-based selections. The menu is rotated and offers hearty and healthy breakfast and entree options to be enjoyed throughout the week. For example, the Kale and Quinoa Power Bowl with marinated kale, seasoned quinoa, roasted mushrooms, cauliflower, toasted seed blend, green goddess dressing - you can add balsamic rosemary chicken too. Smoothies are packed with antioxidants: Mellow Yellow made with mango, banana, turmeric, cauliflower, ginger and coconut water; Orange Glow with papaya, pineapple, carrots, ginger, orange juice; Green Machine with kale, spinach, bananas, pineapple and almond milk.

In addition to daily offerings, they provide a weekly meal prep program of Paleo and Whole30 friendly meals.

As we continue into the summer months, the menu will continue to change as they stay seasonal as possible with daily specials and meal prep. You can find special drinks and food specials throughout the week.

The concept of automat dining was closely tied to the post-industrial era and the surge in white-collar workers in cities and later a popular option during the Depression-era with inexpensive staples like baked beans and mac & cheese. The food was prepared in a kitchen behind a wall of locked boxes displaying the ready-made dishes - all self-service. Diners inserted coins to unlock them and retrieve the item they wanted.

Automat Kitchen opened Jan 27, 2021 and makes meals fresh to order. Consulting Chef Quirino Silva created a modern comfort food menu with creative global twists on American classics for breakfast, lunch and dinner to appeal to modern diners. Silva created dishes that draw both on history and tradition but reflect the way we eat today, including Pastrami Reuben Flatbread; Chicken Pot Pie with vegetables, puff pastry and creamy gravy and The Wedge salad with iceberg lettuce, lardons, tomato, blue cheese dressing - just to name a few.

The menu will change seasonally and include special limited-time items too - the plan has always been to rotate menu items - right now they are doing Mac Madness (coinciding with March Mad Madness 3/18 - 4/5) with 5 new mac & cheese dishes: beef Meatballs Stuffed with Mac & Cheese Parm Sandwich with marinara, mozzarella and spinach; BBQ Brisket Mac & Cheese with gorgonzola cheese; Pepperoni Pizza Mac & Cheese with mozzarella, parmesan, mascarpone, marinara and cupped pepperoni over Mac & Cheese crust. Their signature Mac & Cheese with elbow macaroni, cheese blend, parmesan crisp, toasted breadcrumbs, scallions and crema verde will be available on its own, as well as in a Mac & Cheese Sandwich. Vegan Mac & Cheese with penne pasta, vegan cheddar, vegan mozzarella and oat milk will be offered with optional grilled tofu on top.

The user experience and process of ordering, paying and receiving the meal is based on Automat Kitchen's technology, custom hardware and software. Orders can be placed in advance online or by smartphone or at the location by scanning the QR code with a phone that will take you to ordering online.

After selecting items and entering payment information, the kitchen confirms the received order with a text. Customer's first name and last initial will appear on the main display screen above the locked food cubbies with the status "received." When order is ready, the status changes on the display to show the number of the cubby the order is in and customer receives a text with a unique code to unlock the cubby, to which they reply "open" by text (or manually enter the code on the cubby's screen). The door opens and closes automatically after the food is removed.
