SPRING AWAKENING WITH ASHLEY BUSCH

April 9, 2018
AM MAR SPRING AWAKENING-2.jpg

It's been quite a winter! Thankfully, March reminds us that our dreams of sunny days and rising temperatures is closer to being a reality. This month's covergirl is one of our new faves, Ashley Busch - US Polo player, Global Brand Ambassador of U.S. Polo Assn, Wilhelmina model and wife of NASCAR's Kurt Busch! Our shoot incorporates Spring's must haves and we get the scoop on playing polo, hanging out with Ashley and seeing what she's up to.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What does it take to be a polo player?

ASHLEY BUSCH: It takes a few things to be a good polo player. Of course, previous riding experience is always an advantage. To me, the most important skill is to have good hand-eye coordination. Also, the skill of the pony is just as important as the skill of the player.

AM: Are there things that people don't realize in terms of coordinating the mallet and riding?

AB: Most people do not realize that when we are riding we are standing up in the stirrups 90% of the time. In order to hit the ball it takes hand eye coordination. How far it goes has a lot to do with timing of where your horse is and where your mallet is in relation to the ball.

AM: What are your favorite plays?

AB: There are not really any set plays or off sides in polo. Any player can go anywhere on the field. Typically, I play number 1 or number 2 and those positions are the ones that do most of the scoring which are my favorite plays of course!

AM: What has been your favorite match that you have played in?

AB: My favorite match was the 12 Goal tournament I won with my dad at the International Polo Club.

AM: How has the Polo season been and what races are you looking forward to this year?

AB: Polo season has been great so far. I played my first tournament in January and we got to the finals where we only lost by one goal. The second tournament I played in February, we won
by 2 goals. So, I would say this season has been a success!

I look forward to all of the races whether I'm there or watching on TV. I get really into each race because each track is different and it’s fun to see how everything transpires. One of my favorite
trips is the west coast swing that we are on right now. From Vegas to Phoenix to LA. Some other tracks that I love are Bristol in Tennessee, Talladega, and Sonoma.

AM: As this month's cover girl of Athleisure Mag for the kickoff to our Spring Issue, what is it about this time of year that you find exciting?

AB: I am someone that has always gravitated towards warm weather. I love that the flowers are starting to bloom and everything is warming up. I look at springtime as an opportunity to do some spring cleaning and really hone in on my goals for the year. It’s a reboot in my opinion!

AM: The Spring is definitely a great time to add new pieces to your closet - what are some of your favorite spring must-haves that you love in your closet or will be adding to soon?

AB: With all the fashion weeks coming to an end, a lot of designers start putting out their spring lines, which I am always excited to see what new prints and styles are featured. I especially enjoy it because I am a designer myself and look forward to seeing what they come up with and what is trending. As far as new pieces, I am a sucker for a good pair of jeans that can be worn from day to night and I am always looking for fun shoes to mix it up!

AM: You do a lot of traveling and with NASCAR season starting back up, how do you juggle your calendar versus your days on the track to support your husband?

AB: The key for us is basically just looking ahead and scheduling everything accordingly. Some races I inevitably miss because I am playing polo. Regardless, though, we are both very supportive of each other and we make it work!

AM: With such a busy schedule, great skincare is essential to ensure that you always look like you have a well-rested glow - what beauty products do you swear by?

AB: I typically do not wear much makeup, mainly because I am always on the go. Some of my go-to products are the La Mer oil-infused lotion to hydrate and smooth my skin. I also love Drunk Elephant's day and night serums to help balance out my skin tone. I use the Elta MD tinted moisturizer almost every day, especially when I have a polo match. It provides nice, even coverage, but more importantly has SPF to prevent wrinkles. When traveling, I always carry the Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist! I use it whenever I feel like my skin needs a little boost of hydration.

AM: The last time we chatted with you, you were working on your swim line, how is that going and what can you tell us about it?

AB: We are still in the creative process of my swim line and ironing out all of the details. What I can tell you is that 10% of the proceeds will go to charity, as philanthropy has always been a major part of my life. I will be posting updates on my social media as we progress and am shooting to launch this summer!

AM: When you're not training for your next polo match, designing your line, in a photoshoot or hanging out with Kurt, what can we find you doing when you're taking time for yourself?

AB: In my spare time, I am most likely spending time with friends and family. I also really enjoy being at home just relaxing with my dogs.

AM: When you're home, where can we find you shopping, grabbing cocktails and a drink and do you have a workout studio that you enjoy going to?

AB: My go-to store to shop is Intermix. I also love to check out local boutiques in the area. In Charlotte, Kurt and I enjoy going to Sushi at the Lake for dinner and drinks. In Florida, HMF is a super cool spot. Most of the time, Kurt and I will cook dinner together at the house though.

When I am in Florida, I train at the International Polo Club with polo trainers. In Charlotte, we have a personal trainer who comes to our house to workout. I also like to take aerial silk classes at Air-fit Charlotte.

AM: What charities or philanthropies do you give your time to?

AB: Children's National Medical Center in DC. Capital Hospice Care. Cancer Research and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Local Humane Societies.

AM MAR SPRING AWAKENING-3.jpg
AM MAR SPRING AWAKENING-5.jpg

We shot Ashley Busch in Brooklyn at the 1

Hotel Brooklyn Bridge which has great views of Manhattan and is in a neighborhood with a number of options to enjoy. We chatted with General Manager, Cornelia Samara to find out why this property is one that you should get to know as we continue into the Spring and Summer.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us about 1 Hotels in terms of the family of properties within this group and what one can expect when staying here generally?

AM MAR SPRING AWAKENING-6.jpg

CORNELIA SAMARA: We currently have 1 Hotels open in South Beach, Manhattan, and most recently, here in Brooklyn. Soon guests will be able to get closer to nature in Cabo; Sanya, China; West Hollywood and Sunnyvale. While every property is unique in its design and offerings, you can always expect a home away from home, with thoughtful service and personal touches. Every 1 Hotel is designed to celebrate nature and bring touches of the outdoors inside.

AM: Are there different personalities that 1 Hotels represents depending on the city/community?

CS: Definitely. Each 1 Hotels property is directly influenced and inspired by their local surroundings – the natural landmarks it sits on or beside, as well as the community it is part of. 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, for example, is inspired by the industrial history of the Brooklyn waterfront, and its design takes cues from the park it sits upon.

AM: Specifically, tell us about 1 Hotels Brooklyn Bridge - when did it open, what is the atmosphere?

CS: We opened our doors to 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge in February 2017, making us just recently 1 Tree Ring year old. The atmosphere at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is first and foremost welcoming, and it has a special balance of energy, liveliness in the midst of tranquility.

AM: What makes the Brooklyn location one that is great for business travel, business meetings, vacations and staycations?

CS: Much like Brooklyn itself, what you can experience at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is very diverse in its offerings. We operate 6 different outlets that can cater to just about every traveler, with a spa providing treatments to relax and re-energize, a rooftop pool & bar that
is calm by day and energetic by night, a lobby lounge and café that are both great for settling in with a good book or hunkering down to get work done, visit The Osprey for an elevated dining experience, or Brooklyn Heights Social club for unparalleled views and an unmatched cocktail list.

AM: What amenities are offered by the hotel and what are the touches that are specific to this hotel?

CS: -Bamford Haybarn Spa

-24 hour Field House fitness center

-Seasonal rooftop bar and pool

-Full Service Restaurant, The Osprey, with seasonal outdoor seating

-Brooklyn Heights Social Club, a bar on the 10th floor with stunning views of NYC skyline

-Neighbors café located in the lobby

-24 hour in-room dining

-Complimentary Tesla electric house car

-Filtered water taps in guest rooms

-Location on Brooklyn Bridge Park

We put a great deal of effort into bringing nature into our public spaces and guest rooms. It’s important that people feel at one with nature even when they aren’t able to actually get outside.

For example, each guest room will have green elements like living green moss, small trees or even hanging gardens.

AM: The public areas are so welcoming, who designed this hotel and what was the thought process behind the design?

CS: The hotel was thoughtfully designed by INC Architecture & Design, guided by a specific vision from our founder, Barry Sternlicht, and our design team. From the beginning, we knew we wanted our guests, community and visitors to feel at home and close to nature. We like
to think of our lobby a place to gather, where you can find locals and guests busy at work or socializing with friends.

AM MAR SPRING AWAKENING-7.jpg

AM: We saw that you offer car services to the area - why is this an amenity that was added and tell us more about it?

CS: We do offer a complimentary Tesla house car for our guests, to whisk them away to destinations within 3 miles of the hotel with low-impact (it’s electric!) We chose an electric car to be our house car because it minimizes our contribution to air pollution and also gives our
guests the chance to see that electric vehicles can be true replacements for gasoline powered vehicles. We hope it encourages them to take measure to reduce their own carbon footprints when they head home.

AM: What can we look forward to for the Spring and the Summer that is offered at the Brooklyn Bridge location?

CS: -New seasonal menus items made with market-fresh ingredients throughout our food and beverage outlets and our in-room dining menu

-Our seasonal rooftop bar and pool will reopen in the spring

-Exciting outdoor programming from our partners at Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy

AM: What do locals have the ability to enjoy whether they are staying as guests or just wish to stop by?

CS: -They can always expect warm and welcoming greeting from our team

-They can always expect amazing cuisine with ingredients locally sourced from their own communities

-Unobstructed views of Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and the Brooklyn Bridge

-Locals are always welcome to get comfortable and work from our lobby lounge

-Special offers from the hotel and our outlets, extended specifically to our neighbors and local community

AM: Tell us about your commitment to wellness as we saw the yoga mats in the room and we know you have a gym as well.

CS: It’s important to us to encourage our guests to take care of themselves both physically and mentally. We can only put our best foot forward in taking care of the planet when we also take care of ourselves. We hope the yoga mats remind guests the importance of taking a moment each day to get centered and focused in their mind and spirit. We offer Mind & Movement programming to help create experiences that allow guests to do this.

AM: Two of our favorite places are rooftops and spas and we know you have both, tell us about this.

CS: You are definitely not alone in that! There are few things better than an amazing view or being pampered. While our service definitely sets us apart, there’s no question that our views are taken to the next level on our rooftop. At Bamford Haybarn Spa, the commitment to holistic treatments and organic ingredients is a major differentiator.

WHERE TO WATCH THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TONIGHT

April 2, 2018
3 (2).jpg

It all comes to tonight! In our March Issue, we had a number of March Madness oriented content from going to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as well as checking in with a number of ESPN analysts to see who they are rooting for, who they think will win and what they have been enjoying this season in terms of style, beauty and tech! Where will you watch the NCAA March Madness Tournament Game which starts tonight at 9pm with Villanova versus University of Michigan? If you're here in NYC, we have a few ideas!

Watch the National Championship Game at Atwood Sports Bar and Lounge which will be sharing the game on 15 of their HDTVs as well as offering specials that include: A Shot and a Beer ($8), Pitchers of Bud Light ($12), Fully Loaded Tator Tots Skillet ($25), Mozzarella Sticks Plate ($25), 20 Wings ($30), Bucket of Fries & Chicken Tenders ($30), Bucket of Bud Light + 20 Wings ($40), 24 Beers + Bottle of Fireball ($300) and Bottle of Don Julio, Jack Daniels, Jameson or Ketel One ($350).

Treadwell Park.jpg

Treadwell Park Downtown (where we shot our Oct 2017 cover with Food Networks Jaymee Sire) is a great place to grab a number of savory comfort foods, playing games at communal tables and getting your own Crowlers to take home to continue the good vibes. We also love that if the private room is available, you can rent it out so that you and your crew can have a private viewing party just for yourselves while taking in the game! Call ahead to see if its an option to take the experience to the next level!

29351869_1847687338583788_3276378730960359754_o.jpg

One of our favorite places to enjoy meeting up with friends is The Ainsworth which has a number of locations in the NYC, Hoboken and the Hamptons. There are a number of TVs that you can take in the game and then menu is pretty fantastic as there is something for everyone from comfort foods to those that are healthier in nature! In addition, the craft beverages take a twist off of classics that will allow you to continue cheering throughout the game!

Catch up on the March Issue.

AM MAR ON THE ROAD WITH BUICK-1.jpg

ON THE ROAD WITH BUICK

April 1, 2018

It seems like snow has been an interesting challenge over the past few weeks and this month, Athleisure Mag editors decided to take a roadtrip to Vermont courtesy of our friends at BUICK to try out the BUICK Regal TourX, a crossover that has the dynamics of a car while having the versatility of a SUV.

The 5 hour drive to Woodstock, Vermont allowed us to enjoy a number of luxury amenities that included OnStar access, OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot (essential for doing laptop work and
keeping our phones connected when we started to get into spotty coverage areas), plenty of USB ports, SiriusXM Radio (we loved Lithium, the Pearl Jam and Beatles channels), and navigation that kept us aware of accident areas and re-routing us as needed.

We're all about storage as we had a bit of equipment with us from camera gear, outfits for the slopes, snacks and more. The cargo space was quite substantial and as we drove into the night,
the illumination of key areas on the dashboard was a great way to keep areas lit.

While in Vermont, we stayed at the Woodstock Inn + Resort, which was a quaint resort that provides easy access to Woodstock Inn Nordic Center (we took the opportunity to go Snowshoeing), as well as a number of other mountain resorts such as Killington Ski Resort. Our room had a fireplace, as well which was a homey touch and there were attendants available to
start the fire if needed. In our downtime, we took advantage of our stay at the Woodstock Inn enjoying fine dining at the properties' Red Rooster and Richardson's Tavern, which had a
number of savory comfort foods and well-made cocktails. We also enjoyed our fill of basketball games as we're in the midst of March Madness!

There were a number of common areas with fireplaces that continued the woodsy vibe of this resort from the lobby, cozy nooks as well as a library that gave guests a number of places to connect with friends, family and other guests. We dove into chapters of Re-Engineering Humanity over hot toddies.

We explored the town of Woodstock, which had a number of churches, historical sites and covered bridges that highlighted the New England town.

AM MAR ON THE ROAD WITH BUICK-2.jpg AM MAR ON THE ROAD WITH BUICK-3.jpg AM MAR ON THE ROAD WITH BUICK-4.jpg AM MAR ON THE ROAD WITH BUICK-5.jpg

When we added the trip to our calendar, we knew that we wanted to explore a few areas and decided to make a pit stop on our way home. Interestingly enough when we crossed Vermont's state line into Massachusetts, we saw the exit for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA. With March being the month of one of college's biggest tournament's, NCAA March Madness we decided that we had to make a stop here.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is in honor of Dr. James Naismith, a physical educator who invented the game at the age of 30 in 1891. He wrote the original basketball rule book and founded the University of Kansas basketball program. He was the first Kansas Jayhawks' Coach (1898 - 1907) as well as the school's Athletic Director (1919 - 1937). Prior to his death, he saw the game become an official Olympic event in the summer games of 1936, the birth of the National Invitation Tournament (1938) and the NCAA Tournament (1939). At his tenure at Kansas, he would coach Phog Allen who later became the coach for Kansas for 39 seasons. He would also coach Adolph Rupp and Dean Smith.

This building is home to more than 300 inductees and has over 40,000 square feet of basketball history from NCAA teams, NBA, interactive exhibits and live clinics. Visitors can see signed memorabilia, sneakers, plaques, uniforms and more that have a place in Hardwood History.

It was a great weekend checking out the car, snow sports and paying homage to the inception and heritage of basketball.

RIDING WITH HUSQVARNA NYC LAUNCH PARTY

March 18, 2018

We enjoyed Husqvarna Motorcycles' launch of their highly anticipated new range of “real street” motorcycles to the North American market in NYC. The VITPILEN 401, VITPILEN 701, and SVARTPILEN 401 feature new advanced technology for the world of motorcycling. Inspired by the minimal simplicity of classic Swedish design, Husqvarna's new urban motorcycles combine high quality, state-of-the-art technology and progressive technology to redefine the modern riding experience.

Guests enjoyed previewing the three sophisticated, urban-styled models to celebrate Husqvarna's return to street motorcycling. Hasselblad X1D camera demos were on hand for motorcycle photography amidst the backdrop of Husqvarna's VR experience, its 2018 fashion accessories preview and a cocktail party atmosphere at the Skylight Modern event space in Chelsea Gallery District, NYC.

MARCH MADNESS | SELECTION SUNDAY

March 11, 2018

It's that time of year again! Our eyes were glued to TBS today during the Selection Show that took place to see who was invited to the Big Dance for the NCAA Men's Division I Tournament. Of course a number of the team's alma mater's were not in this year but we have some favorites. We see Duke taking it all but as we go from one game to the next, we'll enjoy our fair share of hoops and wings!

You can join in the fun to see how many times you have to change your bracket by signing up for the Bracket Challenge.

NYFW FW18 | GRUNGY GENTLEMAN

February 7, 2018

Earlier tonight, we attended one of our favorite menswear lines, Grungy Gentleman FW18, founded by Jace Lipstein who is also the designer. During his show, he showcased  GG x Darrelle Revis (Kansas City Chiefs), GG x National Basketball Players Association collection and GG x Subway Tile Shirts. Looks were paired with Grungy Gentleman x Timberland footwear and a Grungy Gentleman x Chalk Line bomber jacket, along with footwear provided by Adidas.

Prior to and after the show, DJ Juanyto of Hot 97 played a set while we enjoyed Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice and Hennessey. Hair and makeup was done by New York Institute of Beauty. NFL Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Darelle Revis opened the show along with Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor, NY Giants running back Wayne Gallman, and Dallas Cowboys cornerback Nolan Carrol, who modeled/walked in what was Grungy Gentleman’s 8th menswear runway show.

THE KNOCKOUT WITH BRANDI RHODES

February 7, 2018
AM JAN THE KNOCKOUT WITH BRANDI RHODES-2.jpg

If you don't know Brandi Rhodes, you're missing out on this stunner who embodies #GirlPower and #CoupleGoals. While you get to know more about her through her social, you can catch her wrestling with Women of Honor alongside her hubby Cody Rhodes (as she is apart of wrestling royalty)! You can also catch her this month in the debut season of E! WAGS Atlanta, where she is one of the breakout stars.

In addition to shooting her fabulous editorial for our anniversary issue, we talked with her about how she got into the industry from modeling, her start in the WWE, being in ROH/WOH, her busy schedule and how she maintains her site, Not a Basic B for her fans to get to know her more!

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us how you got into wrestling and what your journey was into the sport?

BRANDI RHODES: I was scouted by WWE as I was modeling in Miami, FL. They contacted my modeling agency and expressed interest. From there I had meetings and then a try out to assess my athleticism. Then I was offered a contract to come to Florida Championship Wrestling and begin training. The rest is history!

AM: We know you were with the WWE and are currently with WOH - can you tell us about your experiences with both and what you're looking forward to within this league?

BR: With WWE I was an announcer, and unable to wrestle (which is what I wanted to do all along, but once it was discovered that I was good on the mic, I was placed in that position and
unable to transition away from it). In WOH I am of course a wrestler and am able to spread my wings and grow and learn so much! I also am able to work with my husband in ROH which is so
much fun. ROH/WOH allow me to do everything in the realm of wrestling, which is very challenging and fun.

AM: What's it like being married to Cody, who is also a wrestler and is in ROH?

BR: I’m the luckiest woman in the world to be married to Cody. He is incredibly smart, ambitious, handsome and has such a big heart. It’s inspirational to get to work with him in ROH. I learn a lot from him, and I have a front row seat to this time, being the most successful of his career. In Wrestling, many times wives have to stay home and watch their spouses compete from afar. I’m grateful to be on the road with him and able to see some of his most important
matches.

AM: How do you balance your schedules as we interviewed WWE Superstar Natalya Neidhart last year and Danielle Moinet/Summer Rae last year and know that as an athlete, you guys travel a lot to global matches? When your husband is also doing these, how do you connect
and find balance?

BR: We are big on having our fun. We plan our downtime just like anyone else. This month we are looking forward to a long awaited ski trip after heading to Japan for WrestleKingdom, one of the biggest wrestling events of the entire year! But sometimes it’s a trip to Disney or Universal Studios to recharge and connect, others it’s a trip to our favorite movie theater, and other times, we have to find time to have dates on the road! Last week we had to see The Last Jedi, in New Jersey because we were working, but refused to miss out on seeing the movie right when it came out. No matter how busy our schedules are, we can always find time to do things we love together. We make it if we have to!

AM: When we looked through your blog, Not Another Basic B - we were obsessed with your accessories and style - tell us more about your blog, why you created it, and how important is it to you as a creative outlet?

BR: Initially I created Not Another Basic B as a way to express my creativity. I was very bored and just not satisfied in my previous career. I couldn’t control that at the time, but I could challenge myself by creating the blog and the content that I put into it. I loved fashion and often would have people tweeting me trying to find out what brands I was wearing on TV, and this blog made it easier to connect with these folks and get them that information! From there, the blog took off to become more than fashion. I started sharing my travels, things about my
family and my marriage and personal stories as well. Now people look to the blog as a place for everyone. From the fashionista to the wrestling fan, to the traveler! I’m so proud of what it has
become!

AM: How did you become apart of the cast of WAGS Atlanta?

BR: I was living in LA working on another TV project and Casting reached out to my management asking if I would be willing to do a Skype interview to get to know me. I did the interview and a week later was sent over a contract to do the show! It was really fast! I later
found out that I was the last member cast. They were looking for someone who had an existing fan base and presence, and thankfully I have the most loyal fan base and following from the
wrestling world and they are really excited to see me on the show!

AM: We know that the season just started, but would you come back for another season, and/or be open to future reality shows?

BR: There are a lot of factors that come into play when determining what happens next and when. But I am happy to have this opportunity to be a part of the E! family, and for viewers and our existing fans to have the opportunity to get to know us a little better!

AM: How do you stay in great shape?

BR: I train very hard daily! My workouts are 6 days a week and incorporate weight training, interval exercises and plenty of cardio. I’ve found a balance with training, it’s something that challenges me, but also that I enjoy greatly.

AM: What do your workouts look for a match versus just maintaining when you may be in a few days of downtime?

BR: I really don’t deviate from routine when I have a match coming up. I compete pretty frequently, sometimes multiple times in one week, so for me it’s important to stay consistent at all times. In the summer, however, I do tend to add runs into my workouts simply because I love running outside!

AM: What are 3 go-to power foods when you're working out versus 3 splurges when you're treating yourself?

BR: When I’m working out I love a good protein shake, my favorite is from a place called Kale Me Crazy. I’m also very big on tuna packets, because I can take them anywhere and they do the trick! Then I love almond butter. Put it on my toast every morning. Splurge foods: pizza, burgers and any kind of cake. I have a ridiculous sweet tooth!

AM JAN THE KNOCKOUT WITH BRANDI RHODES-3.jpg

AM: You travel frequently what are 3 beauty products that you swear by that keep your skin fresh and vibrant?

BR: I always travel with Foreo. It’s a face cleansing device (similar to Clarisonic) but they come in Travel sizes and are so easy to use and keep clean! I also need my Dermologica face lotion
which is lightweight and SPF50! Lastly, I always have a good mask with me, I tend to go back and forth between charcoal and mud masks.

AM: How do you take time for yourself?

BR: Honestly... I watch the Hallmark Channel and HGTV and grab a glass of wine in my big moments of relaxation ha! I’ll take a bubble bath if I’m feeling REALLY edgy :)

AM: What do you wear when you go out for brunch, versus when you're running errands?

BR: I definitely dress up for brunch! A sundress with jewelry and heels in always up my alley. For errands, however, most of the time I am dressed “gym fab” because I’ve either just
come from the gym, or I’m on the way to the gym! Often time that’s head to toe Lululemon or Lorna Jane!

AM: What are your goals this year in wrestling, business, the site, family etc?

BR: This year I’m hoping to chase the dream of becoming WOH Champion! I’m looking forward to taking the blog to new heights this year with some upcoming partnerships! There are a few exciting things underway so just keep your eyes and ears open for me!

AM: What charities/philanthropies do you give your time to?

BR: I’ve always had an interest anything that helps with cancer research. Over the past few years my family has known too many families that have lost kids to childhood cancer. I’m always passionate in that research and spreading the word about ways to help.

AM: Anything else you'd like to share?

BR: The best ways to connect and interact with me! Those are my social pages: @TheBrandiRhodes - Twitter and IG and of course NotAnotherBasicB.com! Aside from that I’d like to wish everyone an amazing 2018! It’s going to be as great as we make it!

AM JAN ISSUE DR G.jpg

SUMMER BODIES ARE MADE IN THE WINTER

January 22, 2018

Last month we introduced our readers to Dr. Greuner, a cardiovascular surgeon who has a passion for fitness. The response was so great, we thought that he should have a column to share various elements of fitness to get to where we want to be. This month we're focused on
kickstarting our workouts and are taking our lead from Dr. G!

ATHLEISURE MAG: With the notion of summer bodies being made in the winter, what should a work out week look like for men vs women to get great arms, legs, abs and butts?

DR.GREUNER: I’ve always stressed that there are two separate components to the look most of us want to achieve, and they should be targeted in two different ways. For toning and shaping, strength exercises are crucial. To put that hard earned, toned, and shapely muscle front and center for the summer's revealing ensembles, diet is absolutely crucial to lose any fat that might overshadow what lies beneath. To lose the weight, simple arithmetic is all it takes. You must eat less calories than you burn. A simple BMR calculator, or devices such as a FitBit are crucial to estimating what you burn daily, and I use these routinely. The mistake we see sabotaging diets most often, however, is an underestimation of the caloric count of foods. Things like sauces, dressings, and alcohol can foil an otherwise valiant effort at weight loss, and that is why I recommend on diet days, that you prep your own meals, so you have a firm grip on it.

When it comes to shaping, compound movements are not just the most efficacious in building muscle, but also in terms of improving function. For arms, dumbbell or barbell bicep curls are one of my favorites. Simple to perform, and work very well. I typically do 6 sets of 10, or to failure with strict form. For triceps, my faithful move is the French press, 6 sets of 10. It’s an easy exercise to do well, and form fails minimally with fatiguing muscles.

For legs, NOTHING beats the old-fashioned squat. 4 sets of 10. I typically follow that with 4 sets of weighted lunges 10 reps, each side. Trust me, simple but effective. This works well for your butt, as It is a direct extension functionally of your legs.

For abs, I work this muscle group 2-3 times a week, as opposed to most others once weekly. This is because your abs have a higher percentage of fast twitch, or endurance fibers, and recover quickly, but typically don’t require as much training as the other muscle groups at each
session. They are constantly under tension stabilizing your body. For advanced athletes, I recommend 6 sets of hanging leg raises, 10 reps, but this is a very difficult move to do correctly. For those of you that are newer to this, I typically recommend 4 sets of incline leg raises, followed by 4 sets of crunches, each for 10 reps. Simple and strict is the key to isolating these muscle groups.

Remember, If it isn’t uncomfortable, you aren’t stimulating the muscle to change. Get out of your comfort zone, you will thank me for it later.

AM: For those that may have slipped into not working out during the holiday season, how can they get back into putting this into their routine?

DR G: The easiest solution is to grab a partner. That is a quick way to ensure that you have an obligation to meet your schedule, or hear about it later. Other incentives include signing up for
work incentives, or competing with fellow employees if your job has a plan. In my company, we use Fitness Amigo, and award rewards to those that “win” their fitness goals.

Lastly, make a mental, or physical picture of what you want to obtain, and make sure you see it constantly to drive you. Other options include, entering a competition that mandates you get in
shape, or a self-awarded reward once you hit your goal.

My workouts change from mostly outdoor in the summer to mostly indoor in the winter. I take part in activities such as martial arts and group classes. I'll present some of my favorites in a future article, but some classes that provide a competitive environment, such as Flywheel that allows you to compete with you classmates, is always an impetus for me to push harder.

DR G1.png

AM: For those who like working out outdoors who don't enjoy doing it in the cold, what would you suggest for workouts?

DR. G: Winter is the time I pick to explore new classes, and activities, and even pick up a new sport. I'll go into detail about these in a later story, including my pros and cons about each, but briefly some of my choices this year included:

1. Boxing and martial arts, including classes such as Rumble, Work Train Fight, Dogpound, and others, as well as true sparring one on one with some of the most talented coaches in NYC. Be
careful, it’s addictive!

2. I’m an avid cyclist in the summer months, so spinning classes are a mandatory part of my arsenal. In general, I prefer Flywheel given the objective power data they provide and the ability to compete with classmates.

3. Circuit training with weights, which is a constant part of my regimen.

4. Boot Camps such as Barry’s Bootcamp, one of my favorites.

5. Flexibility work such as Pilates, yoga, and capoeira.

6. Climbing walls are a great way to simulate the outdoors.

7. Other typically outdoor sports such as parkour are now omnipresent in NYC.

AM: How beneficial is a couple or buddy workout and how do you stay on track with this as it can also have distracting effects?

DR. G: Its crucial for me that my partner is as fitness inclined as I am, or its unlikely to work. Sports occupy so many categories of benefit in my life, from psychological, to meditative, to performance, that it’s absolutely mandatory for my overall well-being, and having a partner that is so inclined can be one of your best motivators to staying healthy. Everything is easier when your best friend is there beside you! At the same time, distraction can be an issue if one of you is self-conscious or less motivated. You can see this two ways…a chance to coach each other to be better, or as a roadblock. Decide early, and act accordingly.

AM: How long do you feel it should take to start seeing results and how do you think you should go about tracking these areas for proper motivation?

DR G: Although it may sound terrible, often the heavier you are, the longer it takes to see visible results as the layer of fat on top of muscle is thicker. Talk about an incentive to stay lean! Although you won’t see the results immediately, you will lose weight and increase function quickly, typically within a month if you put a significant effort in. The leaner you are able to stay, the less time it takes to see distinct results as the layer of fat covering your muscle is much thinner and disappears with less effort. The take home message? Keep lean, allow some discrepancies here and there, but make your hard work last with lifestyle changes that make the task less and less daunting with each coming year. It’s absolutely possible to enjoy your life, and still look great. Moderation is the key. I look forward to giving more guidance about doing just that in future articles!

We're excited for upcoming articles that Dr. Greuner will share with our readers at Athleisure Mag, and are looking forward to his future contributions! Make sure to follow him on IG @Doctor.DavidGreuner to see what he's up to and where he's working out.

REEBOK | WOVEN INTO THE FUTURE

January 9, 2018

Earlier this fall, Reebok announced a new footwear technology called Flexweave - revolutionary shoe upper material that is incredibly versatile, providing a balance of lightness, durability, fit and stability. Reebok partnered with three designers across the world to create bespoke fitness prototypes to showcase this one-of-a-kind material.

The design partnerships within this collective are known as "Woven into the Future" and includes an altitude-training mask from the UK design collective Modla (ENG) that showcases the material’s softness and durability, an “active seat” from Dutch collective Odd Matter (AN) that highlights its flexibility and strength, and GPS-enabled gloves by Joe Doucet x Partners (USA) to display the material’s customization and versatility.

The Flexweave material will first be seen in the FAST Flexweave running shoe, available in February on Reebok.com, and the material was developed through the Reebok Innovation Collective (a division championing the open-sourced pursuit of progression via innovation and partnerships that aims to push the boundaries of invention). These partnerships with the global fitness brand explored the potential of Flexweave and explored its limitless potential to create a unique product that links form and function to create an aesthetic product that utilizes the benefits of the technology while serving a fitness purpose. Flexweave boasts an open figure-8 construction that interlocks unlimited strands of fibers to create a single surface construction that is as strong as it is light. All designers worked with the version of the textile that will appear in the first-generation of Reebok Flexweave footwear, launching in 2018, made from chenille yarn.

JOE DOUCET X PARTNERS -  New York City, United States

As a designer, entrepreneur, inventor and creative director, Joe Doucet is one of the most sought-after creative talents in America. Doucet designed a pair of Reebok Flexweave running gloves, form-fitting to the wearers hand, absorbing sweat as they run and lightweight for maximum comfort. The prototype was designed with the vision of being GPS-enabled, guiding the wearer through their run with flashing LED lights to indicate when to turn left or right.

“My inspiration was to capture the unique qualities of the Flexweave technology through something advantageous to an active lifestyle. The strength, flexibility and multi surface durability of Flexweave led me to the idea of a ‘smart’ running glove with a sleek, stylish silhouette. With the form crafted by Flexweave, the next stage of development would be GPS integration paving the way to a new frontier in wearable technology,” said Doucet.

ODD MATTER -  Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Odd Matter is a design studio driven by curiosity; researching, creating and exploring the world through its materials, processes and concept. The duo created a furniture series of ‘active sitting’ chairs; made through a combination of Reebok Flexweave and malleable EVA foam.

“The Inspiration for the chair came from the Flexweave material itself. Whilst experimenting and playing with the fabric we were very intrigued by its behavior, structure and strength under tension. From there we wanted to create an object that played with that tension, a bit like the string of a bow, something in which the tension and strength is palpable,” said Els Woldhek, Odd Matter.

“Working with the Flexweave was very interesting, for instance when cutting it in different directions you straight away notice the differences between the fibers and the technical properties of the Flexweave. This in turn has made us really curious about everything else that is possible with the technology.”

MODLA – London, England

Co-founded by Jon Fidler and Richard Goddard, Modla is an artistic design house specializing in technological innovation, pushing the creative boundaries of 3D printing and digital 3D design. The pair created an entirely new Reebok Flexweave altitude training mask; 3D printing the valve technology across the nose and mouth, coupled with a Flexweave facial strap to comfortably wrap around the wearer’s face during intense training.

"I do a lot of high intensity training so I’m interested in how such equipment works, functions and can help improve performance. But we also saw the potential in the aesthetic of the Flexweave material, to create something which would blend with the mask and align with the contours of the wearer’s face.

As it happens, the Flexweave material provided even more benefit than just the aesthetic and was amazing to work with. It’s strong and durable, so perfect for a product that will get a lot of wear and tear; while also incredibly lightweight, making it breathable on the face for athletes when training." said Fidler.

“Flexweave is going to a major part of the Reebok DNA moving forward. With this creative and imaginative project, we’ve achieved exactly what we set out to do; demonstrate through collaborations in other fields what Flexweave can truly achieve when put to the ultimate test,” said James Woolard, Global Marketing Director, Reebok Running.

“The Reebok Innovation Collection champions the pursuit of partnerships and innovations that will continue propelling the brand forward in spaces like fitness, fashion and footwear. Flexweave represents a huge step forward in footwear upper technology and brings with it a wave of anticipation and excitement for what the future holds for this brand”.

Reebok has extended the creative experience around Flexweave to its community, setting up an interactive digital experience on the Reebok Innovation Collective website called ‘Create Your Weave’; inviting you to construct your own virtual weave design and share it with friends.

The brand is also working with one of Savile Row’s finest tailors, Huntsman & Sons, to create a bespoke men’s suit made from Flexweave. Designed for Reebok Running ambassador and superstar WR Brandin Cooks, the experimental pursuit will be complete in Spring 2018.

NIKE NBA CITY EDITION UNIFORM

December 28, 2017

If you didn't see it over your social feeds, Nike collaborated with the NBA to create a series of jerseys that will bring changes to game day. The Uniform Editions are not about home, away and alternative options - they focus on celebrating the 30 franchises by the city that they were born in. Previously game day uniforms included the Association, Icon and Statement Editions. With this fourth group created by Nike is known as the City Edition - this highlights the roots of the city from within the game and beyond as well as the locale's history. It also leads a map to the future as well. We have included some of the uniforms and you can see all the uniforms as well as their backstory at Nike. Follow them and your favorite team online to see when the uniforms will be worn.

AM NOV ON THE FIELD WITH ASHLEY BUSCH-1.jpg

ON THE FIELD WITH ASHLEY BUSCH

December 15, 2017

When you think about elite sports that involve grace and agility, polo comes to mind. We had the opportunity to chat with Ashley Busch, who not only plays polo for the US team, but she is also the global brand ambassador of the United States Polo Association as well as a model for Wilhelmina. We chat about her career, how she balances her life with her husband and NASCAR driver, Kurt Busch, as well as her new swim line that will make its debut in 2018.

ATHLEISURE MAG: How did you get into Polo and how did this culminate in you becoming the face of the United States Polo Association (USPA) as their global brand ambassador?

ASHLEY BUSCH: I started riding at age 5 where I showed Hunters. When I was 11, I went to a polo school that was in Middleburg, VA. After my first lesson, I fell in love with Polo and have been playing for the past 16 years. As far as the brand ambassadorship with USPA, I previously have done several campaigns for them, in the past, as the brand likes to use actual polo players because it represents authenticity. After building my relationship with USPA and gaining notoriety as a female player, they decided to choose me as their first ambassador.

AM: What are takeaways that you have from Polo that can become keys to living a quality life day to day?

AB: The commitment it takes to be a competitive polo player can be parlayed into several aspects of daily life. Such as physical fitness, motivation, consistency, nutrition and learning that you "win some and you lose some."

AM: Tell us about the US Eastern Circuit Polo Team.

AB: The US Eastern Polo Team was a team that myself and a few other American players brought to England to play against the British Armed Forces where it was a series of 3 tournaments played at Sandhurst Military Academy, Coworth and Guards Polo Clubs. The US Team was able to defeat the British.

AM: We love swimwear and want to know more about how this became your passion and how you came to collaborate with La Isla's Founder and CEO Enrique Sanchez-Rivera.

AB: Another passion of mine has been fashion design and I used to collect swimwear. Enrique is a fellow polo player and has his own swimwear line called La Isla. He also does private label manufacturing, so after speaking with him about the highlights of being involved in design and swimwear, we decided to work together.

_bm32979.jpg

AM: What can you tell us about this upcoming line and will you be showing at Miami Fashion Week this year?

AB: I decided to create my own brand and hired his company to do the private label for me. I don't want to give away too many details about my upcoming line, but it will be similar to the Aqua Bendita swimwear line. My line will have a variety of price points and will be made for all shapes and sizes. My goal is to be showing at Miami Fashion Week.

AM: A portion of the proceeds will go to which causes?

AB: I haven't selected which causes, as it may be a different one each season or may choose several causes to divide among. Hospice, Children’s Hospital, Cancer Research, Humane Society, Horse Welfare, our Military, etc. are all causes I am passionate about!

AM: How is it juggling your busy schedule as a model, USPA Ambassador, designer and the wife of NASCAR champion, Kurt Busch?

AB: It is definitely a lot to juggle, but Kurt and I have a commitment to make time for one another, family and friends. My tip to all trying to juggle a busy schedule is to try to take each day with a positive mindset and fresh start.

AM: Clearly, health and fitness are important to you, what are your go-to foods that you enjoy eating for energy?

AB: Depending on what the day may entail my foods may change. I try to look at food as fuel and how my body responds to it. I enjoy high protein meals that include veggies and quinoa or other high protein grains. Snacks include protein balls & protein shakes, apples with natural peanut butter & yogurts for when I need a fast option. I also avoid alcohol for optimal energy before games and trainings.

AM: With the holidays coming up, many people want great arms and legs which look great in cocktail dresses - what would you suggest adding into your routine in terms of working out?

AB: My trainer, Molly Deaton, is doing lots of bodyweight exercises with low weight. We always start with variations of plank to warm up along with pull-ups & pushups. She has me do something different things each training session, but we use the TRX a lot along with isolated holds for abs and legs. If you are looking for some great toning workouts check out some local classes that are offered in your community. It is a great way to work with a professional who can help you achieve those goals and have fun while getting in shape!

AM: Are there any other fitness methods that you do?

AB: I've recently gotten into Air Silks. It is probably the hardest workout I've ever done but is so much fun. Kurt and I also enjoy working out together.

IN STEP WITH BREA STINSON

November 17, 2017

We're about putting our best foot forward no matter what we're doing or going to. So when we had the chance to talk with Celebrity Celebrity Costume Designer, Brea Stinson whose work has been on Beyonce, TLC, Rita Ora, Willow Smith, Justin Beiber, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes and more.

In addition to having a great eye, she has recently partnered with The Tampax and Always Radiant Collection and the HBCU Dance Corporation during Homecoming season to host the #RadiantDanceOff, a national online dance competition that officially launched earlier this month, and is exclusively open to majorette teams at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The winning HBCU dance team will receive custom uniforms designed by Brea as well as a donation of $25,000 to cover team expenses.

We took some time to find out about how she got into the business, the importance of confidence for women in the entertainment business and why she has partnered with Tampax and Always Radiant Collection during Homecoming season at HBCUs.

ATHLEISURE MAG: How did you get into designing and tell us who some of your celeb clients have been as well as what is the memory of the first piece that you created for a celebrity?

BREA STINSON: I've been designing as long as I can remember. From drawing cartoon characters and bubble letters on jeans in the 6th grade for $5-25 dollars a pop, to designing prom dresses for my high school friends.....I've been putting in work for some time now!

I've had the honor of working with Will Smith, Usher, Beyonce, Zayn, Missy Elliott, Justin Bieber, Rita Ora and more.

The first celebrity piece that stands out for me is the jacket I conceptualized for Jay-Z for his "Fade to Black" ("retirement") concert at Madison Square Garden. I had been a fan of his for so long by that point. I felt like I knew all his lyrics and certain principles that were valuable to him. I was working as an assistant stylist at the time and I suggested that we use vintage tattoo art to convey a message on a cashmere blazer that we pulled for him. I selected the dagger going through the heart and it read, "death before dishonor". The look on his face when my boss revealed the jacket was priceless. He loved it! It was at that moment, I realized there was something special in these little ideas of mine. To have him embrace my concept at such a huge moment in his career was an overwhelming feeling. I'm forever grateful for that moment.

AM: You have dressed the world's most stunning and confident women, how impactful is that on you to be around such bold women who represent the entertainment industry?

BS: It's insane!!! It fuels me. I've been blessed to work with the most talented female creative directors, dancers, producers and artists!!! Having such women of influence choose me, wear my designs and support my dream, is more than flattering. It's inspiring to be in the presence of such power and positivity. I just try to soak up all the knowledge and good energy I can. I only hope to leave them with as much as they give.

AM: Why did you decide to partner with Tampax and Always Radiant Collection in their initiative with HBCUs?

BS: Tampax and Always have always been my brands of choice. I come from a family of female go getters and to be honest, Tampax was the only brand I recall seeing as a child. Our relationship goes all the way back to when I was a dancer in my younger years and from then until now, Tampax has never failed me. Comfort and leak-free protection equals confidence and those qualities are things the Tampax and Always Radiant Collection embody. Also I know from personal experience and from working with my clients that it's important to feel your best in order to perform at the highest level. All these things are the reason this partnership and initiative geared towards HBCUs really spoke to me, especially given that I graduated from an HBCU, Clark Atlanta University, myself. I'd like to think, this is indeed a way to give back.

AM:  You went to Clark Atlanta University, a HBCU - how meaningful is this partnership as the competition with Tampax highlights these elite schools?

BS: Yes, I did! Our school motto is, "find a way or make one". This has stuck with me through my education and career. HBCU's have produced some of this nation’s most RADIANT achievers. So it's not only meaningful, it’s a perfect fit!

While we won't be able to visit all the schools during this campaign, the great thing is that everyone can participate in the competition in some way. Each qualifying HBCU majorette team can enter for a chance to win $25,000 and costumes designed by me!! And, the general public can participate by casting their vote November 2 -November 15th on who they think the winning team should be.

AM: Beyond your involvement with this contest, how important is it to bring the awareness of this study to the African American community?

BS: It's crucial. Studies have shown 4 out of 5 women avoid wearing certain clothing and or doing certain activities during that time of the month, that could be up to a week when they don’t feel like their best selves!

Tampax and Always have been steadfast in creating products with premium protection over the years. It's time to let the girls know, that they can live their best lives any day of the month and completely show up for the task at hand, feeling comfortable and confident. There's so much to be unsure about these days, so this is one less thing to stress about. This Radiant campaign celebrates that personal freedom and fearlessness.

AM: How excited are you for the Radiant Tailgate taking place at Howard University?

BS: I'm totally excited! Howard University was one of my top 3 choices. Although, I chose CAU....I've always had a love for this school. Being a part of this campaign allows me participate in the Howard University festivities and deliver a message of style and confidence that is very dear to me.

AM OCT SOMETHING YOU SHOUL KNOW RUGGED MANIAC-1.jpg

SOMETHING YOUR SHOULD KNOW | RUGGED MANIAC

November 14, 2017

Whether you run obstacle competition courses or enjoy watching them on TV, I think we can agree that we're obsessed with this method of fitness that our friends and co-workers tell us about. We found out more about Rugged Maniac, the health benefits and how they compare and differ from other courses that are offered in this space.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What is Rugged Maniac, how long has it been around and how many races take place a year?

ROB DICKENS: Rugged Maniac was founded in 2010 with its first event in October of that year in MA.  We now produce 30 events across the US and Canada each year.

AM: What brought you to Rugged Maniac and what is your role there?

RD: Rugged Maniac was founded by my business partner, Brad Scudder (CEO), and I (COO, CMO). We met in law school and we both worked as attorneys for a few years before embarking on this adventure. Brad was doing insurance defense litigation at a small firm in MA, while I was at a large international firm on Wall Street doing finance. We both grew up in rural areas and had spent much of our childhoods playing outside and participating in outdoors sports (skiing for Brad and surfing for me - I'm from coastal NC), so sitting at a desk all day didn't quite feel right. We both wanted to do something more adventurous.

full-sized-promo-72-mud.jpg

I got an email from Brad one day stating that he was leaving the practice of law to organize an obstacle course race in his hometown in rural MA.  I was intrigued and after some discussion I also left law to found Rugged Maniac.  I'm the Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Marketing Officer, which means I manage a large part of the company's operations while also overseeing all advertising, design, and PR.

AM: What are the similarities/differences of Rugged Maniac versus other obstacle competition companies?

RD:
Rugged Maniac is now the third largest OCR in the country behind Tough Mudder and Spartan Race.  Our goal is to get everyone off their couches and outdoors having FUN with friends while being active. Our courses are undoubtedly challenging, but we're not going to shock you with electricity, make you jump in ice water, or punish you for not being able to complete an obstacle.  It's not about being bigger, badder, and faster than those around you. It's about pushing your own limits while helping your friends (and strangers!) over the obstacles.  This philosophy has made us the go-to event for people of all fitness levels, not just hardcore athletes.  We also have more women participants than any other OCR.  In fact, women make up 55% of our participants!

Speaking of obstacles, we pack more into our 3-mile course (25) than Spartan Race's 5k (20) and Tough Mudder's normal 12-mile course (20).  We also put a lot of emphasis on the entertainment in our festival.  We have a DJ on the main stage, a comedic emcee entertaining the crowd all day, a mechanical bull, pie-eating contests, dance parties, and plenty of craft beer. You simply don't see as big of a party at any other OCR.

As for Warrior Dash, they also focus more on the fun aspect of obstacle course racing, but they provide only 10-12 minor obstacles in a 3-mile course, which just doesn't measure up to what other OCRs offer.

AM: What are the health benefits to training for Rugged Maniac and how long is training for a race of this nature?

RD:
Rugged Maniac is a 5k (3-mile) off-road run with 25 obstacles, each of which poses a different physical challenge. This means that your training has to include not only running, but climbing, crawling, jumping, and balancing - more of a total body workout than when preparing for a normal 5k or marathon.  How long you have to train depends on (1)  your race goal and (2) your current fitness level.

If your goal is to win the race (only about 5% of runners have this as a goal), you'll need to be able to run a normal 5k in about 16 minutes AND have the upper body strength necessary to complete The Ringer, Pull Your Weight, and The Warped Wall (see www.rugedmaniac.com/obstacles).  However, the vast majority of our maniacs aren't "in it to win it."  They come with a group of friends in order to have a ton of fun while challenging themselves physically.  It's not about beating everyone else; it's about camaraderie and fun.

So if you fall into this category, you'll likely just want to be able to complete all the obstacles.  For most people, this means working on your upper body strength and balance (The Gauntlet, Frog Hop, and Tipping Point). Again, how long it will take to reach that point will depend on your current abilities.

trampoline.jpg

AM: How can training for this race be adopted throughout a person's life?

RD: There are no shortcuts to getting in shape, unfortunately.  It doesn't matter what you're training for, you simply have to make exercising part of your daily (or weekly) routine - no excuses. If you want to be in great shape, you need to work out at least three times a week, with the bulk of that time being spent on cardiovascular activities with some strength training mixed in. You don't need a gym membership; you can get in perfect shape by running and doing cody-weight exercises, like push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, etc.

AM: Are Rugged Maniac courses the same and what's it like creating them?

RD:
The obstacles at each Rugged Maniac event are largely the same nationwide (as are the obstacles for every other OCR brand). Think of an OCR event as a traveling circus, of sorts.  Everything is packed up and shipped to the next location following each event.  Variety comes from the differences in the venues; some are completely flat, some are on mountain slopes, some are in the desert, some are next to a lake. So the runner experience from event to event can vary quite a bit.  Of course, we add a few new obstacles to our courses each year to keep things interesting (while retiring some older designs).

AM: What other events are produced?

RD:
Rugged Races, the parent company of Rugged Maniac, also owns and produces The Tour of the Battenkill cycling event in upstate New York; the Costume Dash 5k (Halloween costume run) in Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco; and 16 other 5ks/marathons/half marathons throughout New England under the Loco Races name.

AM: What should we keep an eye out for within Rugged Races 2018?

RD: We plan to continue acquiring a variety of sports properties throughout 2018 as we grow into one of the country's largest event producers. We have some exciting opportunities in front of us so stay tuned for more announcements!

SAVOR THE SEASON WITH JAYMEE SIRE

November 8, 2017
PM AM JS 3 AM JS 9 3R6A1104.jpg
PM X 9 AM JS 6 3R6A0967+.jpg

The fall is an interesting time of year as you can still rock summer looks with a few layers to transition. You have some crisp days and a few toasty ones and the idea of still being able to go out without having to fight the elements is still easy enough! In addition, this time of year makes you think of your favorite gameday, comfort food, grabbing a few beers and waiting for the holiday season.

This month's celebrity cover is full of great fall trends you'll want to add to your closet (plaid, sweatshirts, layers and how to transition summer into fall). Food Network's Jaymee Sire, will be the floor reporter for Iron Chef Showdown whose season debuts next month on Nov 8th! We wanted to catch up with her on how she got into broadcasting, her love of food and what she enjoys eating and cooking!

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us your background and how you got into broadcasting and the various stations/networks that you have been on?

JAYMEE SIRE: I decided pretty early on that I wanted to pursue a career in broadcasting, so I actually started running studio cameras at my local station in Great Falls, MT (my hometown) in high school. After studying broadcasting at Washington State University, I worked for a year in Great Falls before making the jump to San Diego, CA working as a sports reporter at the CBS affiliate there (KFMB). After 4.5 years, I moved to Northern California to work at a regional sports network, CSN Bay Area where I had the opportunity to cover two World Series by the SF Giants. Soon, ESPN came calling so I moved cross country to Connecticut, where I worked on various shows, including helping to launch SportsCenter:AM, the morning installment of the flagship program. In April of this year, I was unfortunately part of a mass layoff of over 100 on air talent. However, I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and it allowed me to pursue another passion of mine: food and travel TV! Starting November 8, I will be the floor reporter on Iron Chef Showdown on Food Network.

AM: Have you always had an interest in food and how is preparing your work in this vertical different than sports?

JS: Back in middle school, my mom made it a requirement for my sister and I to cook dinner for the family once a week. It really sparked my interest in cooking, especially when I realized I could really make anything I wanted as long as I had all the ingredients and followed the instructions of a recipe. That interest intensified living in California for 10 years, where there is no shortage of amazing produce and inspiration. While living in SF, I started my blog, E is for Eat, documenting my adventures in the kitchen, restaurants and even traveling around the world. Working in the food space is a dream come true for me, and while it's much different than sports, in some respects, it's also very similar in others. My role on ICS reminds me a lot of doing sidelines for a football game. I'm responsible for doing my research, knowing the storylines, quickly getting in and out for an interview, reporting my findings to Alton (Brown), and keeping an eye out for action happening on the floor. Additionally, the chefs are extremely competitive, we have a "home team" (the Iron Chef), and Alton calls the action much like a play by play commentator. It's actually the perfect transition for me from sports to food!

AM: We're excited about Iron Chef Showdown which premieres next month. Tell us about this show and what to expect?

JS: For die-hard fans of the Iron Chef America, you will be happy to know there are a lot of familiarities. The original Kitchen Stadium set has returned from storage, with some updates. Al ton is still the host and The Chairman is back with his crazy antics. But there are some fun new twists as well. For starters, we have a new Iron Chef, Stephanie Izard, thanks to this spring's Iron Chef Gauntlet competition. Also, there is now a Round 1, where two challenger chefs compete for the opportunity to face one of the Iron Chefs in the second round. And of course, there is a brand new floor reporter. :) I think fans will really enjoy the high intensity competition they loved from the original series, with some exciting, faster-paced elements.

AM OCT SAVOR THE SEASON WITH JAYMEE SIRE-3.jpg
AM OCT SAVOR THE SEASON WITH JAYMEE SIRE-4.jpg

AM: As fans of the Iron Chef series, what are some of the inside details that you can tell us - do they really cook in just an hour and is it as intense as it seems?

JS: This is a common question, and a valid one with everything we know of "reality" TV these days. But, they really do cook in just an hour! There's a lot of setup involved, with camera angles, shots, the revealing of the secret ingredient that takes longer to shoot, but the chefs are not allowed to start cooking until the 60 minutes starts. And once the clock starts counting down, it doesn't stop until it reads zero. It's one of the things I love about working on the show. Even though it's a taped show, during that hour, it feels like live TV, which is what I've done for 15 years. There are some practices in place to make it possible for the judges to taste their food while it's hot, but everything must be finished in the hour, even if it must be reheated and re-plated right before tasting. And yes, the competition is FIERCE! The chefs take this very seriously. It's the OG in food competition shows, and the reputations and bragging rights on the line far exceed any other cooking competition. This is their Super Bowl!

AM: What other projects are you working on that you can share with us that we should keep an eye out for?

JS: Nothing is imminent, but I'm really hoping to further my transition into this space by developing some other food and travel shows of my own. We have some ideas we are working on, hopefully I can share more soon!

AM: As someone who loves food, what are 3 of your favorite things to eat during this season?

JS: Ooooooh! So hard to narrow down to just three, but I will try. I really do love eating with the seasons, and there are so many amazing ingredients and flavors we associate with fall. I love butternut squash, I think it's a far more superior and versatile option to pumpkin, which is kind of overplayed this time of year. Butternut squash is great in soups, salads, pureés, as a substitute for noodles in lasagna, or simply roasted as a side dish. I know they're cliche these days, but I love me some Brussels sprouts too. One of my go-to side dishes in the fall is roasted Brussels sprouts with red onion, garlic, apples, pears, fresh herbs and of course... BACON. Haha. I also really love pork this time of year. I just made pulled pork yesterday for a bunch of friends, which is an easy way to feed a crowd. But I also love to use it in ragus, or even just a big Berkshire pork chop served with a side of fall vegetables.

AM: What is a Jaymee Sire Thanksgiving like?

JS: Thanksgiving is such a nostalgic time for me. As much as I love experimenting with new dishes and flavors most of the year, Thanksgiving is a time for childhood favorites... with a Jaymee twist.. One of my favorite Thanksgiving dishes is Green Bean Casserole (not what you were expecting me to say, right?) But since I started the blog, I've developed a way to make it with all homemade ingredients from the condensed cream of mushroom soup to the fried onions on top. It conjures up those memories, but omits the canned or processed products. I also do a Sweet Potato Casserole that my mom requests every year. I use Grand Marnier and top it with candied pecans instead of marshmallows. Some of my other Thanksgiving table favorites include: Brie Mashed Potatoes (either that or Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes), Sourdough Stuffing, and Grand Marnier Cranberries. I was also lucky to snag a fresh Stone Barns turkey this year. They went on sale at exactly 10:00am on October 25th, and one of my friends told me she missed out when trying to reserve at 10:04. (I clicked at 10:00 exactly, because I'm a huge nerd and really wanted one).

AM: Do you have a signature dish that you enjoy cooking?

JS: I would say Ragu is my signature. That's a very broad dish to name, but I like to make new ones all the time, and experiment with different pasta shapes to serve with it. One of my all-time faves was a Wild Boar Ragu (can substitute pork shoulder if you can't get wild boar), and it actually placed second at a pasta sauce competition in San Francisco! (number 1 in my heart.) I've done a similar one with Oxtail on the blog as well, but recently I did a more traditional one with ground veal, ground beef, and hot Italian sausage and some homemade veal stock I had in the freezer. My boyfriend says it's the best thing I've ever made for him, so I should probably get that one up on the blog at some point!

AM: What's on your playlist whether it's to work out or simply when you're out and about?

JS: People who know me well know that I'm sort of obsessed with a station on Pandora called "Hip Hop BBQ." It's seriously life changing, haha. It's basically a bunch of old school rap and hip hop from the late 90's/early 2000's and it's always the perfect station for any party, cooking dinner, working out, etc. In fact, I'm listening to it right now!

AM: When you're not working or trying the next meal, what can we find you doing?

JS: Traveling! Almost as much as I'm obsessed with food, I'm addicted to traveling. I studied abroad in Barcelona my senior year in college, and have had the travel bug ever since. I love experiencing other cultures, trying new foods, and seeing the world. Just in the last couple years, I've visited South Africa, Thailand, Peru, France (twice) and Tulum... just to name a few. I'd really like to get to Cuba before it gets modernized, so that's probably next on my list. I love documenting my travels on the blog, and even have a separate tab for it on E is for Eat.

AM: Are there any charities/philanthropies/mentorships that you are involved in?

JS: I recently traveled back to my alma mater to attend homecoming with some girlfriends, and I decided to fly in a day early to spend the day speaking with broadcasting classes. I remember how cool it was to receive advice and guidance from others in the business, so I always do what I can to pay that forward and help young up and comers in broadcasting. Hoping to do much more in the future!

Our cover shoot with Food Network's Jaymee Sire, took place in Battery Park at Treadwell Park Downtown (whose sister location is on the UES) and is led by Beverage Curator and Certified Cicerone® Anne Becerra. The best way to enjoy the fall season with great style is to enjoy 20 continually rotating draught beers and ciders, cask beers and hand-crafted artisanal cocktails made from independent spirits.

These beverages are paired with a curated menu from Chef John Villa that include in-house smoked beef brisket sandwiches, smoked crispy wings, and wagyu kobe style burgers.  For those with a sweet tooth, they offer a selection of seasonal "Beer Floats" featuring unique beer and ice cream flavor combinations.

We had a great time shooting here and sampling the fare and we chatted with our girl Anne for more details on this location.

ATHLEISURE MAG: One of the things that struck us about TPD is that people can select and have their beer canned! Can you tell us about the machine as well as a bit about the process?

ANNE BECERRA: We love the fact that we're able to consistently rotate our draught beer selection so there's always something new and exciting. And because of this, it's happened so many times- people fall in love with a beer they're drinking and then find out it's only available on tap, or they may not be able to get it in can or bottle. Our crowler machine allows us to fill a 32oz can with any of our draught beers, reseal it and take it to go. Because it's sealed it gives the beer a longer shelf life than if we used the standard growler which is typically a screw top glass bottle.

AM: How do you go about selecting the beers that are offered on tap?

AB: It's very important for us to maintain a balanced menu. Our goal is on any given day to offer a mix of hyper local, national, and international beers that cover a wide range of styles. While we change the individual beers after each keg, our style guidelines stay fairly consistent so regardless if you're looking for a Belgian Tripel, American IPA or Imperial Stout- we'll always have you covered.

AM: Are there any beers that are limited in nature that are offered here that may not be found in any or many bars in the city?

AB:
Absolutely. We always get really excited when a brewery we love has a new seasonal, one-off, or small batch offering. We have longstanding relationships with brewers, importers and distributors who help keep an eye out for new and interesting beers we can put on our menu. However, what's more important than being "rare," is being good. Who cares if there are only 2 kegs in the country if no one likes the beer? So we try to hit that perfect combination of exciting, delicious, and of course- worth the money.

AM: There are a number of options from the menu - does this change seasonally and what kinds of food can you expect here?

Chef John Villa:
We adjust the menu slightly seasonally. But we have standards and classics that stay on the menu all the time that people come for like the giant pretzel.

AM: We loved the private room which seems perfect to watch a game with a few of your friends, can you tell us more about that?

AB:
Our restaurants are lively, fun places to have some beers, play (or watch) some games, and enjoy yourself. We have several TV's, good music and an upbeat atmosphere. But because there's so much going on, we generally don't play the sound for the games so this backroom is where we can. It's a cozy place with a projector, awesome speakers and comfortable couches that you can watch your favorite games with the sound on and kick back and relax. It's typically first come, first serve but it is available to rent out for private parties,or as an intimate place to watch sports, movies, etc.

AM: You guys have a number of pinball machines, foosball table and even board games - what is the typical girl/guy that comes here?

AB:
One of the best parts of being in the neighborhoods we're in (East 60's and Battery Park) is that there really isn't a typical girl/guy that comes here. It's really the kind of place that everyone feels welcome and on any given day you'll find neighborhood folks, mixed with after work crowds, tourists, families, you name it. I think beer and games have always been great equalizers and hopefully when anyone walks in they feel comfortable and at home.

AM: Now that it's fall, what special events or activities will be offered at TPD and can you tell us about what you are doing for the holiday season?

AB:
Well because the space is pretty sprawling, it's a great choice for holiday parties, office gatherings, you name it.  We also see a lot of people coming to Treadwell Park for holiday shopping for the beer lover in their life. In addition to our crowlers, all our bottles and cans are available to go and we're more than happy to help put together gift baskets or give recommendations. We're also celebrating our 2 year anniversary of our uptown location November 30th so we'll be throwing a blowout party for that - I'm super excited!

AM: We know that there are two Treadwell Parks (the other being on the UES), are there plans to open another location in the city?

AB: The goal of Treadwell Park is to get great beer to as many people as we can in a laid-back, non intimidating atmosphere. The fact that everyone has been so welcoming and into what we're doing is fantastic. Although there are no immediate plans, if opportunities arise in neighborhoods and communities that share our passion for beer, food and everything in between, I can't see why we wouldn't want to continue to grow.
