HOW THE INTERNET REPLACED OR CHANGED PASTIMES

July 25, 2024

Imagine life before the early 2000s. The world was a more straightforward place, perhaps even a happier place. The internet was not widely available for domestic use, leaving our hobbies and pastimes in their original formats. But now, in 2024, the internet has completely transformed some of these pastimes. Let’s delve into some of the most intriguing changes brought about by this technological revolution.

Sports Gambling

If you wanted to bet on the football results or another sporting fixture, you would have to go to the brick-and-mortar betting shop and hope they offered the market you wanted. Frustrated bettors would turn to the building only to find out that the organization doesn’t take bets on second-tier Japanese football, but now offshore sportsbooks allow you to gamble on pretty much anything.

Today, bettors enjoy unparalleled convenience with a plethora of options at their fingertips. The days of trekking to a betting shop, only to find they don't cater to your specific interest, are long gone. Most sports betting now takes place online, making the process more accessible and enjoyable for many.

Multiplayer Video Game Sessions

Who remembers when the new FIFA came out? It was a landmark moment every year. This would often coincide with the weekend, and you’d invite your friends to play it all day and night with multiple cans of beer. Now…inviting your friends to play a video game is no longer a social event. Instead, it’s a connectivity affair. Online gaming essentially killed split-screen gaming as players no longer need to be in the same proximity.

Watching Movies

Before the internet, there were a few options if you wanted to watch a movie. You go to the cinema, hope there’s a good film on television that you want to watch, or go to the local video rental store and pick up a movie you want to see. Blockbuster thrived on this model, which was cheaper than the cinema but offered more movies than television.

Well, that was until the internet. While the DVDs in the post system were an initial idea, video streaming soon became the norm. Streaming services essentially put the video rental stores out of business, with infinitely more movies than the shelves could stock and a lot more convenience than visiting the store to obtain and return the media.

Playing Casino Games

Closely connected to the gambling entry at the top of this article, casino games were forever changed by the emergence of the internet. However, not so much the glamorous venues of Las Vegas, they still hold some appeal. The dingier casino venues that offer dimly lit slot machines have a lot less appeal when casino game players can have the same experience in the comfort of their own homes. Las Vegas and other luxury venues still offer experiences that an app cannot; they haven’t seen significant drop-offs even with some of their custom going online.

Learning a Language

In yesteryear, there were some set methods for acquiring a new language. Reading textbooks or taking in-person classes were the primary means of becoming bilingual. Of course, you could visit a place that speaks that language, but that could be expensive and time-consuming.

In the modern connected world, it’s easier than ever. We are a global society where everything is shared. Yes, language apps lead the way, but there are now infinite resources language learners can refer to, whether it be music, TV shows, or other content that can now be used as language stimuli.

Communicating with Others

The emergence of the internet and related technologies has made massive improvements to how people communicate with one another. In the wider sense of the world, people can now conduct business calls with partners and offices that are far away from one another. For example, a businessman in Australia can now contact his counterpart in London with relative ease without extortionate international calling fees, as the call can be conducted online.

People can now communicate on a micro-level with one another, which used to be impossible, on a closer-to-home basis. Take the example of two friends planning to meet one another in the city center. Before internet connectivity, if one party felt ill on the day, they would be unable to cancel – other than hoping their friend hadn’t already left their house as they could only call the landline. Unbeknownst to the other party, they wait for their friend to arrive, but they are never coming. Only to find out later in the week that they were unwell. Of course, such social dilemmas are now non-existent as friends send one another instant messages to update one another consistently.

Making Relationships

Falling in love or falling to make love used to be a one-stop shop. You went out on the town, found someone you had a mutual attraction with, and got down to it. Of course, the internet got involved and removed many elements. Now there are essays and bios to fill out to make an impression online.
