Heli-skiing with SEABA is about small group, high-touch adventure in some of the most expansive, untouched terrain on the planet, with guides who migrate to Haines each winter specifically because this zone delivers the kind of lines people dream about.

We spoke with Nick Trimble, Co-Owner, Founder, and Logistics Manager, as he has been involved in the ski and snowboard industry for over 30 years.

Heli-skiing is using a helicopter as your “chairlift” so you can access big-mountain backcountry terrain that you simply cannot reach at a resort. Instead of lapping groomers or crowded bowls, you’re flying into remote alpine zones, landing on ridgelines, and skiing or riding long, sustained pitches of untracked Alaskan powder.

What makes heli-skiing with SEABA different is scale and intimacy - the terrain footprint stretches roughly 250 nautical miles from Southeast Alaska up toward the BC/Yukon border, but the operation itself is deliberately small, with a maximum of 4 groups per helicopter and a 4:1 guest-to-guide ratio. That means as a guide, it’s possible to tailor lines, pace, and objectives to each group, so customers feel like they’re pioneering first single descents tailored to them rather than following a conga line down a single run.

SEABA chose Haines because it has a rare combination of coastal snowpack, steep relief, and relatively easy access. The maritime influence builds deep, stable snow on the classic Alaskan spines and ramps people see in films, while the town itself remains a low-key, authentic Alaskan community.

From a guest’s perspective, Haines is appealing because it feels like a genuine adventure basecamp: you’re looking straight out at the mountains you’ll be flying into, watching weather move through the fjords, and then 20 - 30 minutes later, you’re standing on top of them. The fact that SEABA’s permit area extends far beyond just one valley, and links up with partnering zones, gives our guides multiple weather and aspect options to find good snow even when conditions change.

On an all-inclusive SEABA trip, the idea is that once you arrive in Haines, almost everything tied to your ski logistics, safety, weather, and terrain is handled for you so you can focus on why you traveled there in the first place, having the best ski day of your life. A typical day starts with breakfast, followed by a guide-led safety briefing and daily conditions update, then a short transfer to the helicopter staging area where groups cycle through flights for multiple runs.

Back at base, the all-inclusive approach covers lodging arrangements in Haines and meals tied to the package, plus ground transfers associated with the ski program, but guests still have flexibility to explore local restaurants and the town on their own.
