We always enjoy catching up with Harley Pasternak, MSc, celebrity trainer, nutritionist and Propel ambassador. He is someone that is not only passionate about working out and food nutrition, but he also believes in the importance of hydration as these three things optimize your body as you go about your day. We wanted to see what he has been up to since we talked to him last summer; get some tips on working out; solo or with friends without equipment and what tools he enjoys using.
ATHLEISURE MAG: With everyone being able to enjoy summer weather, what are the best exercises that we can do outside that don’t require equipment?
HARLEY PASTERNAK: Walk! Walking is still my absolute favorite exercise because it does not require any special equipment, you can do it throughout the day, it can be a form of socialization, and you can even watch your favorite TV show or movie if you have access to a treadmill indoors. I make sure my Fitbit reads at least 12,000 steps every single day!
AM: For those that want to have their friends, family or small groups to workout together, what kinds of workouts do you suggest for this?
HP: Aside from walking as a group, fun games like pickleball or ultimate frisbee are great ways to get a bunch of people involved in a healthy competitive activity that burns lots of calories. Circuit is also a fun way to include a group of people, by having a few different stations, each of which has a different exercise that people can cycle through.
AM: For those continuing to build their home gyms and as you have designed and developed various equipment, what do you suggest should be added to people’s homes?
HP: I’m a big fan of dumbbells. Their versatility is unrivaled. Aside from having some dumbbells, I love a TRX suspension strap, sliders, a good exercise bench, and an elastic headband. If you’re looking for something a little upmarket, nothing comes close to FORME for a digital hardware solution, or you can access some awesome digital content that does not require any equipment at Alo Moves.
AM: What are some tips that we need to incorporate post workout for our recovery?
HP: Hydration is key! Most of the people that come to my gym show up already dehydrated. We actually focus on pre-hydrating, hydrating throughout the workout, and rehydrating right after.
AM: Hydration is important and even more so when we’re in the midst of summer heat, what are your suggestions for this?
HP: I’ve been a big believer in Propel Fitness Water for a few years. The fact that you can get fluids and electrolytes into your body without sugar, goes a long way. Also research shows that flavored water leads to people drinking more fluids than unflavored water. The Propel Powder Packs are super convenient because you can put them into an empty bottle – like the Propel reusable bottle – add water, and shake.
AM: How much hydration should we be consuming on average and what’s the best way to go about that each day?
HP: I tell my clients that 3 L of fluids each day is a must. If you are exercising in the heat, that number goes up relatively.
AM: We like heading to your IG to see recipes that you suggest that we eat such as your open faced shrimp sandwich. What would be a summer menu for the day that you suggest that we can enjoy for breakfast, lunch and dinner?
HP: I love starting my day with a smoothie, especially one that uses summer fruits like berries. Try my Red Berry Smoothie from the Body Reset diet. Lunch can be a nice salad using seasonal vegetables, seeds, and lean protein like grilled shrimp. And dinner usually focuses on the lean protein like salmon or chicken with a bunch of grilled seasonal vegetables, and a baked sweet potato.
AM: This summer, people will definitely be excited to go out and to do so with a number of people, so I think that people will be busy for sure. How do you maintain a balanced lifestyle that allows you to optimize your summer while setting you for success as we transition to other seasons?
HP: I think building your physical activity around walking is key, especially in the summer. Because of the high temperatures, I like to get most of my walking down early in the morning or at the end of the day while multitasking by doing phone calls or returning text and emails. Preplanning your meals is also very helpful to make sure you don’t feel overwhelmed every day of the week trying to cook.

Tonight’s ABC’s The Bachelorette continues with Kaitlyn, Tayshia and Katie Thurston having a proper catch-up session to see where she is with the guys that remain. The guys are at the house and Kaitlyn announces Katie’s plan for Operation WOWO to see who will be able to hold out the longest. The guys take in this added element of self-care that they will not be able to engage in. Kaitlyn leaves the date card behind and Justin receives a 1-on-1 date. We can only imagine how many faces he will do during their date.
On Justin’s date, we see our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Dir. of Athleisure Mag’s friend (Kimmie Smith), Franco Lacosta who is back as the photographer of the wedding date. Katie and Justin write their vows and then they take a number of pictures in a wedding dress and a suit. Seeing Justin think about what it would be like to be married and to think about what he would say on his big day along with all of his facial expressions was definitely a great date to see. Franco shares some words of wisdom about being authentic and real.
The second date card arrives which will be a group date and includes: Blake, Andrew, Michael A., Greg, Aaron, Mike P., Brendan, James, Tre and Hunter are on the next date. They are halfway through this season so the need to have 1-on-1 time is important. Connor realizes that he will get the 1-on-1 date. As we return to the back half of James and Katie’s date, she shares that the experience was hard because her dad passed away and it reminds her of how important it is for her to love her family every day and then she found out prior to his death that he was not her biological father. She knows that her biological father wants to meet her and be involved, but she is conflicted as she is always reminded of the one she thinks of as a father that passed away. In telling her story, she is comforted by how Justin listened to what she was going through and she offers him the date rose. They end their night dancing to Max Schneider’s (from Nickelodeon’s Rags) performance.
The theme for the group date is a Bachelorette Party of sorts. She lets the guys know that she has enlisted the help of RuPaul’s Drag Race Shea Colet and Monet x Change. They will learn how to throw shade and cut the other guys down - this is not going to end well. Hunter will definitely have some words thrown his way. The guys let her know through their interactions that Hunter is a Bachelor Nation super fan who likes to read the blogs and comment on people. They’re dismissed to the second half of their date for the group cocktail party.
Connor officially gets his date card for his 1-on-1. We head back to the second part of the date and Katie says that she’s concerned about a few things that she heard during the date and lets them know that Hometowns are coming up and some of the guys are not exactly where they need to be. Andrew and Katie seem to have a great connection when they talk aside from the event. Greg lets Katie know that he is falling for her and that he just wants to make sense that they are on the same page and to be honest with him. She enjoys chatting with everyone and has a different vibe with each. Her and Blake engage in sexy banter and James shares that Hunter is not who he presents himself to be. Tre also shares his thoughts on Hunter as well as the interaction about whether he was in love with her. Aaron also puts his 2 cents in on the subject and she grabs him to find out more.
Katie asks him about being calculated and the fact that multiple guys are bringing it up. Hunter shares that he is being ganged up on and he’s trying to take care of his side of the street. Katie lets him know that she needs a minute because she is so conflicted. The guys are talking amongst themselves and not everyone got time with her she calls the night early and she says that she will not be giving a rose for the group date. The guys are dejected and are left in limbo.
We pick up with Connor which is prepping for his date with Katie. Although she was drained from last night’s date, we can see that she is excited to just have a fun date with the original cat man. She admits that although she loves their chemistry, she doesn’t feel that sizzle when they kiss with one another as she doesn’t feel that spark. Their date is a double with Kaitlyn and her fiance Jason Tartick. She hopes that because they have been in the process, they can shed some light. They begin with Volleyball and move on to maneuvering with coconuts as well as playing a game to ask questions to get to know one another better. Kaitlyn lets her know that time means everything and reminds her that she was friends with Jason first and then they started to date. Clearly, Kaitlyn feels that the last kiss will tell her everything that she needs to know. Connor asks what the other part of the date will be and she doesn’t really answer him - but they do kiss and it looks pretty passionate (we assumed that she felt all of her kisses with him were - then again, they did linger on his suitcase quite a bit).
We’re back from the commercial break and Katie visits Connor before the second part of the date wearing a cropped hoodie and her jeans. She lets him know that as much as she appreciates him, when they kiss one another, she feels something is missing. Although she is being honest, it’s pretty awful for him to hear that. Connor says goodbye to the guys and the bromance of Greg and Connor is now over on the show. It’s nice to see how people in the house do like him and how they respected him. Hunter with the faux tears though? Blake comes over with his radio above his head, outside of her window to send some love her way. Clearly, there is passion between the two of them even after their WOWO conversation from earlier. Blake shows how he is being supportive as he realized that while the house was having an emotional moment with Connor’s goodbye, he thought about how Katie must have been feeling to do that. We’re definitely starting to root for Blake as we’re seeing a lot more of his personality.
Tonight’s episode has definitely had a lot of emotion going on! Heading into the rose ceremony, Katie is looking ahead and knows there are some decisions that she will be making. She lets them know that she is going to be intentional with her heart and that there won’t be a cocktail party and they will go straight to the ceremony. She only wants to focus on the relationships that she has formed and time tonight won’t change her mind. Right when she is about to give roses out, she asks to talk with Hunter to get clarity.
At the end of tonight’s episode, the following receive roses: Justin, Blake, Andrew, Greg, Michael A., Mike P. and Brendan.
Katie sent home: Connor, James, Hunter, Tre and Aaron.
Each night, when the season airs, we’ll tweet about The Bachelor and you can chat along with us (@AthleisureMag + with our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Director, Kimmie Smith @ShesKimmie) to see what’s taking place!
Each week we will let you know who our faves were last episode and if we’ve changed up since then as it pertains to who we think should go to Hometowns.
We also suggest a podcast that we’ve become obsessed with over the past few seasons, Wondery’s Bachelor Happy Hour to get their feedback!
Over the past few weeks, we have stayed with Connor B, James, Greg and Tré for who we thought will go to Hometowns due to not having a rose ceremony.
This week, we’re shaking up our picks that we think will go to Hometowns by removing James andTre and adding Andrew S. and Michael A.

Tonight’s ABC’s The Bachelorette continues with changes on the horizon! Tayshia pops by to see the guys and lets them know that this is ultimately Katie Thurston’s season. She lets them know that a guy reached out to her to join the season and that he is now being added to the mix. Blake comes by and introduces himself to the guys and notes that the energy is not the greatest.
The date card arrives, and it’s a 1-on-1 with Blake. The guys are definitely simmering over him being there and getting that prime time with her.
Katie makes her presence known and sits with the guys and decides to open up the floor and to see how they feel about it. They wanted to know more about how she knows Blake. She assures them that she values the existing relationships but in also speaking with him, she noticed that there was chemistry there and wants to explore it. In her confessional, she shares that by having him now as a date, she can see if there is an opportunity with him quickly.
While Blake and Katie are on the back half of their date, the next date card is given and it’s a group date. Greg, Quartenay, Aaron, Mike P., Michael A., Andrew M., Josh, Justin, Brandon, James, Connor B., Tre and Hunter.
Andrew S.’ name was not on the card so he knows that he will get the 1-on-1 date.
Back on the date with Blake, he asks her and learns about her journey to sex positivity. She is interested in continuing the journey with him and finding out more about him and gave him the rose. They also enjoyed a solo performance by Laine Hardy (American Idol season 2) as there is always a country artist that’s in the mix these past few seasons of the show.
We know that the group date makes a reference to a battle field and with so many emotions amongst the guys, we have a feeling that this will be an intense date. We also know that one of our favorites (longtime friend of our Style Director, Kimmie Smith) Franco Lacosta are on today’s episode. They’re playing a rugby meets basketball game known as Bash Ball. They begin with a medley of workouts that included tackling drills. The guys hit the field rocking wrestling outfits. Hunter initiates the aggressive tackle and it gets dicey throughout the rest of the game with hard tackles. Michael A. gets tackled from behind and the medics hit the field - the look on Justin’s face is filled with anguish as he feels bad. Katie calls the game because she doesn’t want anyone injured. She also notes that if they got injured, they have to leave the bubble and can’t come back. Katie decides that although the black team won, she is having both teams come to the cocktail party.
The largest group date rose transitions into the back half of the date as everyone in the house minus Andrew S. and Blake are on the date. Katie pulls Michael A. away first - he did get a huge injury so everyone should have expected that. She brings him a cold ice pack so that he can put it on his injuries. He lets her know it’s been a rough few days as his wife passed away and it was her birthday. Others on the date find ways to connect as they feel the pressure of really being able to connect and make the best impression. Hunter truly leans into being an awful human being by being rude to the guys. He shares pictures of his kids with her which is sweet; however, hearing him being an ass to everyone else on tonight’s episode has been a bit much.
Back at the house, the last date card arrives for the episode and it confirms that Andrew S. will be on the 1-on-1 date. Back on the group date, the guys chat amongst themselves and Michael A. shares that he is widowed after being with the same woman for 16 years. Greg is visibly touched by his story (in our chat on Twitter tonight, we were reminded that Greg lost his dad) and realizing how happy he is and that he would have never have known that about him. Michael A. shares that time is an important element and that people need to live in the moment and Greg realizes that he wants to step it up and be in the moment. He talks with Katie and she tells him that he has resting sad puppy dog face. The rose for the group date goes to Hunter. Clearly, the house has focused on Hunter as the next person that they will try to kick out.
Immediately after the group date, Andrew S. has his late-night date with Katie. They grab some lanterns and walk into the dark woods. Katie plugs in the lights and it seems like they will have to open envelopes that will direct them to do various activities. The activities allow them to converse and to get to know more about one another. The date continues with them being able to break hearts (after reading the envelopes) which is a deeper set of conversations where they talk about their families and other topics. Both of them answer the questions so that they can get to know more about one another. This continues onto the next portion of the date which has balloons that are lit up with a few questions that they can continue to answer. As they complete their date over a few drinks, it’s easy to see how they have great chemistry and it’s easy between them. In addition to having a shared upbringing and some of the same insecurities, it makes you wonder how their relationship will progress in terms of a dating dynamic. Andrew S. talks about the realities of an interracial relationship and how a woman he wanted to marry questioned what it would be like to have biracial children. Katie was shocked but put his mind at ease by saying that she wants a beautiful family no matter what they look like and that she would be a mama bear. They end the date in the hot tub and she gives him the 1-on-1 date rose.
Going into the cocktail party with half an hour left, it’s 50/50 on whether the rose ceremony will happen. The guys note that there isn’t drama necessarily going into this rose ceremony (although there is) and Katie emerges and talks with Justin first. Justin gives us all the faces during their time together. Hunter takes some time with Katie, but his housemates, Aaron and James are annoyed because he already has a rose. They feel that if he didn’t have a rose, he would be annoyed that someone with a rose was with her. James decides that he will interrupt their date. He asks to talk with her and Hunter initially says no and that he needs a few more minutes. James comes back and pulls her again, Hunter feels that even though he has his rose, he will still get his “unclaimed” minutes. Aaron continues his campaign by sharing what happened with Hunter to Tre. Hunter chats with Tre, James and Aaron and says that he is competing and rose or not, it’s what he wanted to do.
The end of the night comes to a close with the following guys moving onto next week with a rose: Blake, Hunter, Andrew S., Greg, Aaron, Michael A., Conor B., James, Justin, Mike P., Brandon and Tre.
Katie sends Quartenay (round of applause was given by the house), Joshua and Andrew M. are sent home. Aaron was going to give a toast and Hunter interrupted him and gave his own!

Tonight’s ABC’s The Bachelorette continues with the guys still talking about Thomas who admitted last week that he came mainly because he wanted to be The Bachelor although he doesn’t think like that now. There is another group date that’s getting underway which includes: Andrew S., Greg, Tre, Joshua, Christian, Andrew M., Mike P.. Katie Thurston meets them to have a Truth or Dare date that will have them doing a number of stunts across the property.
On the second part of the date, the guys talk about whether they should tell Katie. Tre decides that he is going to tell her what Thomas said. Some of the guys are not in agreement with Tre telling her about what was going on in the house. Ultimately, Katie says she appreciated it and Tre receives the group date rose.
The next morning, Katie thinks about what took place the night before and Tayshia finds her to see how she’s doing. She explains that although she won’t say who it is, this person is here for her and wants to meet her. It ends up being Blake and he lets her know that he has been intrigued by her since she walked out of the limo in Matt James’ season. Katie and Blake have DM’d each other before. She is concerned that he has dated 2 other Bachelorettes. She lets him know that she is also concerned about him being in the house as she already has strong connections in the house and she doesn’t want to disrupt that. She also has to figure out Thomas.
Conor B. and Michael A. both received roses last week. Tre has his rose from today’s group date. At the rose ceremony, Katie gives out additional ones to: Hunter, Greg, Justin, Brendan, Andrew S., Aaron, Mike P., James, Josh, Quartenay and Andrew M.
Katie tells Thomas right before the last rose that his audition for The Bachelor is now over and that he can leave. It stuns everyone. She doesn’t give the last rose away. She then heads to Blake’s room and lets him know that if he wishes to stay, he can and he will be staying in the house. Can we just say that tonight, as are the other nights have been amazing when it comes to Justin’s faces.
So Thomas, Christian, David, and Conor C. were sent home.

The first day of summer started yesterday and it’s always fun to kick off with ABC’s The Bachelorette. Last week we left in the midst of some self started drama creates by Karl, which put the cocktail ceremony in an awkward place. Katie Thurston was told that there were some guys that were still not genuine among the group, but that he didn’t want to say who. She’s left to figure out the men as well as to question Karl! She lets the guys know that she has been told this information and they find out from Karl that he is stirring things up. Everyone was left wondering what this would mean, the impacton the cocktail portion of the evening and ultimately, the Rose Ceremony! Karl has just been problematic from the beginning so we can’t wait to see when he will finally get the boot.
So we pick up right where we left off with the guys begging him to stop being someone who continues to stir the pot. Katie takes a moment by herself and lets the guys know that she will not have the cocktail party and will go straight to the rose ceremony without talking to anyone. Greg checks in on her and as appreciative as she is, she lets him know that she can’t be confident of the people in the room. Meanwhile, Karl continues to act like a victim as the entire house continues to be agitated with him due to the cancellation of the cocktail party.
Katie gives roses out but when Mike P. gets his rose, he lets her know that all the guys are in solidarity together and that they don’t believe that what Karl says is the truth. She asks all the men if they agree (minus Karl of course) and they do! She takes another moment to think about this information by chatting with Tayshia Adams (The Bachelorette Season 16) and Kaitlyn Bristowe (The Bachelorette Season 11). They let her know that she should do what she wants to do as it’s not up to the men in the house on what she does.
Prior to the rose ceremony: Andrew S., Greg and Thomas already had roses coming into the night. At the rose ceremony begins, roses are given to: David, Hunter, Conor C., Mike P., Michael, Connor B, Quartney, Tre, Justin, Andrew M., Christian, Josh, Brendan, James and Aaron.
She sends Karl (thankfully), John, Garrett and Kyle home.
The date card arrives with Aaron, Quartney, James, Conor B, David, Justin, Thomas, Hunter and Brendan on it. They notice that she ends it with 3 dots and doesn’t even had her name and heart to it. It’s a large group date which will focus on her getting clarity. Nick Viall (formerly on The Bachelorette and The Bachelor) has joined the date which has a circle of chairs for everyone to sit down. He lets them know that he has been in the process as well as being in her shoes. He explains that she deserves to know what is going on with them so that she can be aware of what’s going on with them. He wants to hold them accountable. The date is an open forum for them to be transparent. Hunter admits that he failed at his marriage by shifting priorities and working too hard which also affected his 2 children. Each guy shares their stories that don’t necessarily show themselves in their best light. Thomas says that he leaned into the potential of what this platform could be and that worst-case scenario he could have that, meet her and he shares stories about women he has screwed over - with a smile.
The second portion of the date allows the guys to get some time with her to share what they’re about. Could this be a drama free date? Justin (who’s always down for a good face reaction) catches up with her for a bit of 1-on-1 time. Connor B. recognizes that she didn’t have to share her story, but was appreciative that she did. Katie wants to know more about Thomas’ big list of red flags that he has. He tells her that when he arrived, she was not his first choice, but now he is so happy to be there. He continues to dodge the question by asking her to ask him specifically. He also realized after the conversation, that he got rattled and needs to fix it regardless of how it makes his housemates feel - so of course, he swoops in for a second conversation and cutting Aaron’s time. Even the other guys on the group date see this as problematic for Katie. The group date rose goes to Connor B.
Another date card is on its way. The guys hear that Michael A. has the 1-on-1 date. Hopefully, Michael A. is able to talk with Katie as she knows that he has a child, but he wants to go into more of the details about his story. As they settle into the back half of the date, he finally shares that he met his wife, they dated, married, had their son and was later diagnosed with breast cancer. She passed away and he lets her know that he knows what it’s like to love and give of yourself. He now feels at this place where he can open up his heart and the gift that it is to fall in love for a 2nd time. Katie acknowledges his forever love and that she is not intimidated by it and gives him a rose.
Meanwhile, the guys talk about Thomas and how he’s disrespecting the house in general. It seems like they are coming together as a house to attempt to kick him out.
The guys assemble and Hunter asks if he’s doing what he is doing so that he can be in a campaign to be The Bachelor. He then agrees that when he came to the house, that was his intention, but now he doesn’t feel that way. Another cliffhanger on tonight’s episode as there is one more group date prior to the next rose ceremony. We also learn that someone else from Tayshia’s season is on his way as well!
We end tonight’s episode with Connor B. and Michael A. receiving a rose.
Last week, we stayed with Connor B, James, Greg and Tré for who we think will go to Hometowns due to not having a rose ceremony.
This week, we’re keeping the same guys although we think that next week, there could be a shift or 2 in the works.

We kick off the 2nd episode of ABC’s The Bachelorette, with Katie Thurston chatting with Tayshia Adams (Season 16) and Kaitlyn Bristowe (Season 11). We also see the guys checking out their new place as they get to know more about one another and Katie. We see the first group date which leans into sex positivity and is hosted by Heather McDonald.
We find out that there will be 2 group dates and 1 1-on-1 date for this week. Katie feels that she has a great group of core guys to learn more about.
Justin, Quartney, Tré, Mike, Karl, Connor B., Andrew M., Conor C., David, Garrett, Joshua, Thomas, Christian, and James. We feel for Mike as he’s grappling with the fact that he is a virgin and that he has to share that on a group date that will include an audience (the other guys in the house). He wants to let Katie know first before disclosing it to others. The fact that most of the guys really went out there and Mike simply talked with Katie and won the trophy redeemed this date. Hearing Katie appreciating his words and its simplistic and authentic delivery was nice to see. The balance of him saying who he is while also being supportive of her sex-positive nature is also key to the success of his approach. Thomas ends up getting the group date rose.
While the guys enjoy the second part of their date, the date card arrives and Greg, who got the first impression rose) gets the 1-on-1 date. They’re doing a day camping experience, complete with fishing. Katie shares her memories of camping and fishing with her dad and it really shows how Katie is family-oriented and values the simple things. We also learned that her dad dies when she was young. Their matching plaid theme was a nice touch as well. Finding out that Greg also lost his father and that both of their fathers loved taking them fishing, it was a touching moment. Of course, Greg gets the rose on the 1-on-1 as well as some fun fireworks.
The date card arrives with John, Andrew S, Kyle, Josh, Aaron, Brendan, Hunter and Cody on the group date. They will cowboy it up with a mud wrestling event and we get Cody and Aaron going against one another and it looks pretty tense - everyone can tell that it’s personal. Aaron won the event, but Katie felt that she needed to find out what went on between the two of them. Aaron lets her know that he knows him from San Diego and he feels that Cody is not there for the right reason and that he is there for the social media, the hype and more. As soon as she goes to the second portion of the group date, she pulls Cody to the side letting him know that Aaron has made some claims about him that she finds concerning. Now Aaron and Cody are talking together and we still don’t know exactly what has happened between one another, but we do think that Cody is up to something. Katie pulls Cody again and lets him know that she is sending him home because they don’t have trust and it’s too early in the process to feel that way. Seeing her vibe with Andrew S. and how they both had upbringings that although they didn’t have funds, their families made them seem like they had a lot more than what they had. Seeing him step up while she processed what happened with Cody, was great to pick her back up and to interact with the guys that were left. She speaks with each man to get to know every guy from this group date and to hear more about who they are and what their synergies could be. The group date rose goes to Andrew S.!
Now that the rose ceremony is taking place, Katie lets her intentions be known for those that may not know what she is about and looking for. She lets the guys know that she is a safe space, she needs to know what is going on and this is real life. She invites Michael to talk with her first. She lets him know that even though he didn’t get a date this week, that she feels a connection there. While they connect, Karl (a motivational coach who loves to create drama) questions if there are more people in the group that are not there for the right reason. He takes the time to talk with her and begins planting the idea that maybe everyone is not there for her. He doesn’t want to say who feels that way and he doesn’t want to stress her out; however, he has no problem being messy with others. She’s left feeling doubtful and wondering if that should be toward Karl or the other men that he’s alluded to without naming names. Once again, Katie faces her issues heads on and lets the guys know, that she was told that there are multiple people that are there for the wrong reason. But she says that people need to leave if they are not here for the right reason. Katie asks for Aaron to come talk with her and Karl says that he told her the info. The guys ask who he knows and he says that he doesn’t want to share who it is although he has already stirred the pot.
Andrew S., Greg and Thomas end the night with roses. Only Cody has been sent home and we’ll have to wait until next week to see who will move past the rose ceremony.
Each night, when the season airs, we’ll tweet about The Bachelor and you can chat along with us (@AthleisureMag + with our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Director, Kimmie Smith @ShesKimmie) to see what’s taking place!

Last week, we predicted that Hometowns would include: Connor B, James, Greg and Tré.
This week, we’re keeping the same guys as a rose ceremony didn’t take place and the guys we chose, are still here.

And so it begins, Katie Thurston begins her journey and everything in between. With a number of changes that have taken place, it will be interesting to see how this season will continue to unfold in ABC’s The Bachelorette! We first met Katie during the 25th season of The Bachelor with Matt James. We liked how she was comfortable in her own skin as well as being someone who was always transparent when it came to saying what was going on in the house.
This season, we’re at the Hyatt in New Mexico for a change of pace along with two hosts that are former Bachelorettes, Tayshia Adams (Season 16) and Kaitlyn Bristowe (Season 11) who give her some insight on her new role with suggestions on how to navigate it. It will be interesting to see both of them working with her and seeing it through their lens with their previous experience as well as what they would have liked to have known when they were going through it. We’re introduced to the bachelors getting to know more about them as well as how they are spending their time in quarantine before being able to meet everyone. Of course, the first night is always good to see how people introduce themselves. Definitely making a bit of a moment was Tre jumping out of the ball pit in the truck bed. Hearing her say that Greg reminded her of her ex-boyfriend and not being sure whether that was a good or bad thing, was a bit awkward.
Weare introduced to all 30 of the men vying for Katie’s attention: Aaron, Andrew M., Andrew S., Austin, Brandon, Brendan, Christian, Cody, Connor B., Conor C., David, Gabriel, Garrett, Greg, Hunter, James, Jeff, John, Josh, Justin, Karl, Kyle, Landon, Marcus, Marty, Michael, Mike, Quartney, Thomas and Tre. Katie gets to know the guys more while James continues to stay in the gift box - surely, he may be questioning his strategy on that one. III
The first impression rose is brought out and it changes the mood in the room. But we finally get to meet James and we think that we were right to think that he was a contender for Hometowns in our pre-The Bachelorette season 17 post from a few weeks ago. Clearly, the other guys also feel that this is someone to watch. The first impression rose is given to Greg! If you’re chatting on Twitter, you know that there are a number of people that are fans of him. We thought with the mega makeout session with Connor B. the Cat, that he was a shoe in (although we don’t see it in terms of the long game), just goes to show you that you never know! After the rose is handed out, Kaitlyn and Tayshia let the guys know that the rose ceremony is about to begin.
Ultimately, the following men are given a rose: Aaron, Andrew M., Andrew S., Brendan, Christian, Cody, Connor B., Conor C., David, Garrett, Greg, Hunter, James, John, Josh, Justin, Karl, Kyle, Michael, Mike, Quartney, Thomas and Tre.
Katie sends Austin, Brandon, Gabriel, Jeff, Landon, Marcus and Marty home.
It will be interesting to see if new guys will be added into the season in future episodes.
Each night, when the season launches, we’ll tweet about The Bachelor and you can chat along with us (@AthleisureMag + with our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Director, Kimmie Smith @ShesKimmie) to see what’s taking place!

This is going to be an interesting season with Katie at the helm. We’re also excited to see the hosts, Kaitlyn Bristowe and Tayshia Adams. Based on tonight’s episode, we’re looking at these guys as the ones that could make it to Hometowns. In our pre-post, we guessed 4 men and ultimately, we continue to see Connor B. as well as James going to Hometowns; morevover, we also think that Greg and Tré will also be there.

TV Personality and journalist Catt Sadler has been noted by the LA Times as one of the Top 10 Next Broadcasters of Our Generation. Her work in front of the camera has included talking with a wide range of celebs, personalities and athletes to give us the inside scoop. She launched and hosted E!'s The Daily 10 as well as appearing in a number of the networks' shows from E! News, Daily Pop, E! News Weekend to E! Live from the Red Carpet for a number of years.
Since her days at E!, Catt has also focused on the importance of empowering women and encouraging them. She navigates these areas via her site, The CattWalk. She dug deeper through her successful podcast NAKED with Catt Sadler. We caught up with Catt to talk about her career, the importance of wellness and self-care in her life, why she encourages others to embrace this as well. and her latest podcast show, It Sure is a Beautiful Day.
ATHLEISURE MAG: We have always been a fan of yours. When did you know that you wanted to work in the entertainment industry as you have worn so many hats from being on TV, being a podcast host and producer!?
CATT SADDLER: My fascination with the entertainment industry was two-fold. I grew up in the Midwest watching a lot of tv and going to the movies dreaming of La La Land. I almost studied theatre in college, but was also always driven by people’s stories. I ended up studying broadcast journalism and then realized, with the help of my first agent, that I could engineer a life in entertainment television. It would be very competitive and was certainly a longshot (back then no one had iPhones), but as fate would have it I landed my first fulltime tv reporting job in San Francisco at the WB network when I was 22 years old. With more than two decades of hosting and reporting under my belt, producing was a very natural extension of that. The podcast space is a very freeing medium with less structure and rules – not to time, anything goes – I love the rawness of it. I have complete creative control of the content, my guests, the format. I’ve never had more fun.
AM: What does self-care mean to you?
CS: Self-care means so many things to me. Of course, it’s about treating myself to fresh flowers and a massage every now and then. But it’s really about the balance of mind, body, and spirit. It’s doing my best to not neglect any of these areas in my life. Understanding that, and tending to each of them is crucial to my overall wellness!
AM: How important is it to commit to self-care?
CS: The actual commitment to self-care is the most important piece. It’s a discipline that creates the best balance and peace for me. Consistently incorporating movement or exercise into my days, making time to write in my gratitude journal, and continuing my ongoing therapy. Fueling my body with food that makes me feel better, not worse, is also super important. Too much of a good thing is never actually good. Even spicy margaritas.
AM: What are your wellness goals for 2021?
CS: I’ve returned to hot yoga which is so good for us! Sweating is such a necessary release of toxins and stress. This practice has really become my church in many ways. I want to continue to get stronger and more flexible, while also increasing my supplements and vitamins. As we age we need all of the help we can get! I load up on superfoods and elixirs, collagen powders, probiotics, and more most days!
AM: By engaging in self-care, what have you learned about yourself?
CS: When we are kinder and more compassionate towards ourselves, we are better able to contribute more fully and generously to others. I’m a better mother and friend when I’m taking good care of myself.
AM: Many people try to peg their self-care moments to a particular day like on Sunday. How do you make sure that you do this more often than one day a week?
CS: I love a ritual and while I understand it might be good to put self-care on the calendar, I actually think it’s the little choices each day that matter the most. Even if it’s waking up and drinking a full glass of water or committing to five minutes of meditation. The small acts of self-care accumulate and have lasting effects.
AM: You have partnered with Hims and Hers. How did this partnership come about and what is the synergy between you?
CS: Well firstly, who doesn’t love JLo? I saw she was an ambassador for the brand and it wasn’t long after I started teaming up with them. I was using an assortment of their products. I appreciate that they cover the scope of beauty and wellness with effective products all in one easy to use and understand online destination!
AM: What are your quick tips to having glowing skin?
CS: It all starts with fresh clean skin. I like using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer to keep my skin balanced. Hers Deep Sea Cleanser and Tidal Wave Moisturizer have been working wonders. Especially hydrated skin is critical so beyond drinking a ton of water every day I also use Hyaluronic Serum from Dr. Barbara Sturm. Another serum that makes my skin feel radiant is 111Skin’s Rose Gold Radiance Booster. As I get older, it’s also important to make sure my foundation isn’t too matte or drying. I sprinkle in MARA Universal Face Oil into my foundation to make sure I create a dewy youthful look.

We had the pleasure to connect with rock powerhouse couple, Perry Farrell and his wife, Etty Lau Farrell. Perry is known as the Godfather of Alternative Rock and is noted as one of the people to push the genre forward. From Psi Com, Jane's Addiction, Porno for Pyros and his solo projects, this frontman can do it all from lead vocals, writing and more. Etty is a classically trained dancer who toured with Ricky Martin, Madonna, Bon Jovi and joined the Jane's Addiction tour in 1997. She would go on to being a bandmate and being in a number of projects with Perry including being a vocalist in their band, Satellite Party and Kind Heaven Orchestra and being on the board of Lollapalooza.
We caught up with rock's glam power couple to find out about their love for performing, how they work together, Lollapalooza, and Perry Farrell: The Glitz; The Glamour box set.
ATHLEISURE MAG: Perry when did you first fall in love with music and when did you realize that you wanted to perform?
PERRY FARRELL: I was so fortunate to be able to be introduced to so many artists by my big brother and sister. He turned me onto The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and The Who which was my starting point. My sister loved fun and soul so I got to know about James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone and George Clinton as well as the Funkadelic - loved that.
I didn't really think about performing until much later in life in my early 20s! I felt that I had the frame for it as a skinny guy and that I could be a frontman. I knew that I could dance, but I had to have that voice.
So, I taught myself to be a lead singer! I would look into the mirror and imitate Mick Jagger and David Bowie. I wanted to create music that people could feel so I had my mixer, headphones, microphone and I would write songs.
AM: Etty, what was your journey to coming into music and being a vocalist, dancer and songwriter?
ETTY LAU: I had been dancing my entire life as I am a classically trained dancer as a ballerina! I was born in Hong Kong and I went to the Royal Academy of Dance and when I moved to Seattle while being in a dance studio there, I also attended the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Cornish College of the Arts. I came down to LA on a scholarship at 19.
We met in 1997 when Jane's Addiction was going back out on tour and I was on tour with them ever since.
ATHLEISURE MAG: Athleisure Mag is cofounded by a couple so we always like talking to couples who work together. You guys have worked together for decades from Jane’s Addiction, Satellite Party and your latest project, what is that like and how do you navigate the dynamics of work along with your coupleship?
ELF: We have a bit of an odd codependency with one another. So we share everything - a car, a stage, a hotel room.
PF: Even a toothbrush!
AM: Oh my!
ELF: No not a toothbrush, that's gross ha!
AM: Definitely have to have your own on that one haha!
ELF: When it comes to working together, I think of Perry like my boss in many ways. I know that when I'm on tour dancing for Jane's Addiction, he is the boss. I'm on the board of Lolla and I do a lot of the logistical things and make recommendations - but he is the boss.
PF: Absolutely not. I am not your boss, it's a partnership. When we work together, there is a give and take and it's all about immersing yourself and bringing all of these experiences together to make something meaningful and heartfelt.
ELF: We know our strong suits and we're able to play off of one another. What he has, I may not have and what I have he may not have - but together, it works as a true partnership! I know that he respects my opinion, but the final word is with him - I can only advise.
AM: The first music festival that we remember going to was Lollapalooza in 2007 and again in 2008. We saw Satellite Party, Daft Punk, Kanye, Lady Gaga - so many great acts and series of days. It literally started our path to attending festivals.
Like many this past year, it has been insane and between lockdowns, quarantines and pauses, plans were in the air and there were pivots. You guys had Lollapalooza virtually, but with vaccines being available, are there plans to resume this festival this year in Chicago and or global cities?
PF: Lollapalooza is a microcosm of music that has a massive amount of people that enjoy music over a period of days in various cities.
Because of COVID, we did a digital platform in 2020. We did 4 days online and reunited Porno, Janes and had people play live. It was fun because we went into archives and it was a great way to give everyone hope and something to enjoy.
If we can all stay on course, getting vaccinated, socially distant and mask up – maybe please God, we’ll get to go to Chicago in early August with an audience in one capacity or another for Lollapalooza – not a large one but maybe a half capacity. We can only respond to the people and what the city/government professionals say that we can do.
I listen to Joe Biden when he says that July 4th could be when we have our first small celebrations, then I’m going to say, that mine will be in August and I want to have it in Chicago. So I’m planning for a party in some kind of capacity for Kind Heaven Orchestra to come out there.
AM: Definitely hoping that we can go back to in person events! The fact that you guys use your platform to continue to drive the point home that wearing masks is a must and that they need to get vaccinated! It's a shame that it's become so politicized!
PF: Why do you think it's politicized?
AM: I'm not sure why! I think that wearing a mask is just being a good citizen and keeps yourself as well as those around you safe. It's such a small effort with a great impact to show that you're doing your part. The more we're able to do it, engaging in social distancing and safe behaviours, then we can begin to embrace the things that we have done before. It may be in a different way, but baby steps!
ELF: Without a doubt. I mean we have ideas of things; however, it's based on a number of things and ultimately, it's based on what the city will allow. But we're hopeful so keep checking our site and our socials for the latest information on that!
AM: One of the things that I have loved about your music Perry is that it has such a jazzy element to it. My great uncle was tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson who was with Blue Note Records and was part of the Hard Bop era.
As a power duo, you guys formed The Kind Heaven Orchestra. Can you tell me more about this and this 9 piece ensemble?
PF: Thank you yes and that's phenomenal! I love jazz, I love Duke Ellington, Miles Davis - their sound as well as their sense of style is just really something that I vibe with - that was great music.
The Kind Heaven Orchestra is an art collective and a music collective - an installation. We install for more than one day and I want to keep that going with that intimate scenario to see where it goes. Of course, it can be blown up too!
Before COVID, we were performing and I look forward to getting back to it when we're able to do in person events again!
AM: Your box set, Perry Farrell - The Glitz; The Glamour is a 35 year retrospective of your solo and artistic explorations outside of Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros. With 68 tracks, vinyl, blue ray discs and remixes with Maceo Plex, Groove Armada, UNKLE and Hyper to name a few, photos and art - it's an epic and stunning box set to have. Why did you want to embark upon this project and how long did it take to put together?
ELF: We put it together during quarantine. It became our project!
AM: Wait, you just decided to put out this massive retrospective? Some people were making sourdough and you guys decided to showcase history!
PF: I tend to look forward and don’t look back. I like to keep it fresh. I had music all over the universe from Porno for Pyros stuff to Psi Com stuff and solo stuff. I had tracks floating around like they were comets and stars. I wanted everything in one place and to have my body of work. With the Internet, I love that you have a place where you can have all of your history and I had boxes of photographs which every picture tells a story!
ELF: It was going to a 50 page autobiography with photos . It's all vinyl and all solo work - so not Jane's Addiction. So it starts with Psi Com, Satellite Party and Kind Heaven. We have a few new songs in there too. It ended up being 100 pages with photos and about his childhood.
PF: There are 2 songs in the boxed set with Jim Morrison. I received an unearthed recording of The Doors’ Jim Morrison, written and recorded with Starcrawler. I had one of the tracks mixed by a Palestinian woman as well as an Israeli man who created mixes that are in the box set.
AM: When you look at 2020 and as we continue into 2021, there was a lot going on from COVID-19, the election, social justice, facing the need to talk about equality within Black Lives Matter as well as Stop Asian Hate – how are you guys utilizing your platform to lend your voices to this?
ELF: A lot of people don't know that I was born in Hong Kong and I know growing up when I came to the states, I had instances of prejudice and scary situations, but it is nothing like the trauma that is going on right now. We have to educate and bring awareness to what is happening and to speak out!
There are so many things that I want to do to continue to let people know about this. I'm even educating myself as well. When I open my mouth to speak, I'll know what I'm talking about. I think the more we learn about this topic, the more we learn about what we don't know.
AM: Couldn't agree more. It's so important to realize that this is going on and then to be an ally! As a Black Co-Founder whose boyfriend is Italian American/Jewish, he finds it important to not only be aware of what's going on but steps in to be an ally. I think this is so important when it comes to underrepresented groups whether we're talking about Asian, Blacks, LGBTQIA+. This is one of those issues that we need get people to realize that we will not continue to allow these horrific activities to take place!
PF: Absolutely. We need to stand in solidarity, love each other and to unite.

On June 7th, Katie Thurston takes the reigns of ABC’s The Bachelorette! Before we get into the first episode of the season, we know the men that will be vying for her attention. As we realized last season, some of the people who we thought would start in the season, showed up later in the year. As this season concludes, we know that The Bachelorette season 18 will begin with Michelle Young. We first met Katie during the 25th season of The Bachelor of Matt James.
Each night, when the season launches, we’ll tweet about The Bachelor and you can chat along with us (@AthleisureMag + with our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Director, Kimmie Smith @ShesKimmie) to see what’s taking place!
Each week we will let you know who our faves were last episode and if we’ve changed up since then as it pertains to who we think should go to Hometowns.
We also suggest a podcast that we’re newly obsessed with, Wondery’s Bachelor Happy Hour to get their feedback!
This is going to be an interesting season with Katie at the helm. We’re also excited to see the hosts, Kaitlyn Bristowe and Tayshia Adams. Right now, we don’t know anything about the guys that we’ll see this season. So our prediction for who will be at Hometowns is just based on our initial first impression.

We've been a fan of Mark Wahlberg since we first saw his music video for Good Vibrations and as a model for Calvin Klein underwear. We knew then that he would transcend his popstar status as a multi-hyphenated brand that we would continue to see. As he began to make the jump to the big screen in The Basketball Diaries and Boogie Nights, we knew that we would continue to see him taking on additional cool projects.
Since those early days, we have enjoyed Mark's range of characters in our favorite films from Martin Scorsese's The Departed, Patriot Day, Ted/2, 2 Guns, Transformer franchise and All the Money in the World. With the ability to oscillate between dramatic and comedic roles, Mark has proven to be a powerhouse and received A Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in The Departed. He has been equally as dominant behind the screen as an Executive Producer of HBO's Entourage, Ballers, McMillions, Boardwalk Empire, How to Make it in America, A&E's Wahlburgers, USA's Shooter (which he was the main character in the movie version) just to name a few.
We know him to be a man who has a work ethic and commitment to all of his projects whether it's an upcoming role, as an entrepreneur, his passion for his family and his ability to get up early to get his workout in so that he is in shape for whatever life throws at him.
We're excited to have Mark as the cover for this month's issue where he shares his words of wisdom that he has learned as he navigates life and the business. He shares how he continues to optimize his efforts, how he approached his roles, his upcoming film Arthur the King, his apparel brand, MUNICIPAL, and Wahl Street on HBO Max.
ATHLEISURE MAG: When we look at your career as an actor, producer, entrepreneur and investor what has been your mantra as you navigate these areas?
MARK WAHLBERG: Just get going. So many people get stuck over thinking whatever it is. But the key is just to get going. Any momentum is better than no momentum.
AM: You are known as a man with a number of optimized habits. What’s the best way that one can approach that?
MW: Get into a routine that allows you to be the best version of yourself.
AM: What’s the first 3 things that you do in the morning when you wake up?
MW: Pray. Then eat and workout.
AM: Obviously, you’re in great shape and we know that you get up pretty early to get your work in. What is the simplest, but most effective piece of workout equipment that you own?
MW: That’s got to be my PowerPlate Pulse. I feel like I have one in every room in my house. Soreness goes away in just a few mins.
AM: You have been in a number of our favorite movies, from Boogie Nights, The Departed and Transformers franchise. What has been the most physically taxing role that you’ve played on screen?
MW: There are so many because I love the physical aspect of some roles. People pushing themselves to the limit. The Fighter, Lone Survivor were like that. And my new movie I just finished shooting, Arthur the King, does the same.
AM: Which role that you’ve played — Tommy Saunders (Patriots Day), Marcus Luttrell (Lone Survivor), Mike Williams (Deepwater Horizon) — inspired you most personally?
MW: They’re all so different but the one thing that they have in common was they are all real people committed to something bigger than themselves.
That’s as inspiring as it gets.
AM: When you began as an entrepreneur, what was the best piece of advice that you received?
MW: Things never go exactly as you planned. But if you’ve put a great team together, and are persistent, you’ll find creative solutions together.
AM: Since last Oct, we became aware of your fashion brand MUNICIPAL and included it in our cover shoot with EDM DJ/producer duo SOFI TUKKER as well as in our cover shoot with Twilight's Peter Facinelli. We love that the line takes you from day to night. What’s your go-to pieces of MUNICIPAL gear?
MW: SuperBlend tees, Sport Utility Jogger, Everyday Boxer Brief, ICON Trucker Hat – can’t pick just one!
AM: So what’s your favorite new discovery?
MW: MUNICIPAL SuperBlend tees. I live in these things.
AM: When you’re not on set, brokering your deals or thinking of your next project, what is your ideal day?
MW: Spending time with my family.
AM: We love your commitment to your health and fitness, but when it comes to a splurge are you drinking wine, beer or liquor?
MW: Wine
AM: When it comes to athletes, who influenced you the most?
MW: I grew up in the 80’s so it was Larry, Michael, and Magic.
AM: So what music are you listening to right now?
MW: Lately I’ve been watching a bunch of old school hip hop videos with my kids. The stuff holds up!
AM: We’re all streaming a number of shows on various streaming platforms. Any suggestions on what we need to be bingeing?
MW: How about HBO Max? Netflix is Spenser Confidential. And on HBO Max, check out the Wahl Street series airing April 2021.

The 93rd annual Academy Awards -known as the Oscars. The awards show takes place live tonight. As always, we like to share who we think will win, who actually won and whether we were correct on our predictions. It’s been quite an awards season as we have navigates the pandemic for over the past year and we’re always looking forward to who will hit the red carpet and come home with the Oscar.
We caught up with one of our faves, Vanessa Lachey who got her start competing in pageants, being a host on MTV's TRL as well as a number of TV hosting jobs. She also appeared on CBS' The Bold and The Beautiful, FOX's BH90210, and recently, FOX's Call Me Kat. We talked with her to find out how she fell in love with the entertainment industry, Netflix's Love is Blind which she hosts with her husband and 98 Degrees band member, Nick Lachey and what she's working on at the moment!
ATHLEISURE MAG: We’ve been fans of yours since you were on the pageant circuit and of course seeing you as a host on TRL, when did you realize that you wanted to be in the entertainment industry and what drew you to it?
VANESSA LACHEY: I have always loved entertaining my family and friends. I liked making people laugh, and honestly with my dad being in the Air Force and me moving around a lot, being silly and outgoing was my way to make friends and also a coping mechanism for when I was sad or uncomfortable. The pageant was a dare when I was in high school. More of a push my boyfriend's dad who thought if I won his son would appreciate me more. What ended up happening was I realized I only knew how to be ME. I was so nervous and I thought I never stood a chance, but once I won, by being me, I realized how special and unique we all are and can be, as long as we stay true to ourselves. When I started hosting I combined two things I LOVED and knew, music and my outgoing personality. It was such a fun fit and my most favorite job! I owe a lot to both of those experiences and what they did for me personally and professionally.
AM: You've been in so many different great shows, what are the things that you look for when you're considering participating in them?
VL: Honestly, the number one thing I think about is how will the affect my family. Both with my schedule and time away from my kids and time away from my kids and time away from my husband. Next I look at the role and if it's fun, would I enjoy it and how can I make it “mine." For hosting I always want to be a part of something fun and entertaining, but love when I also get to be a part of something bigger and moving or inspirational.
AM: It feels like last year we consumed a lot more programming than normal due to lockdowns etc and we got sucked into Love is Blind. I loved the concept behind it and thought that you and Nick as hosts was such a great addition! What drew you to being involved and how was it for you and your husband to do this together?
VL: This was such a fun project to work on together. We actually hadn’t work together much previously – we’d done a few pageant hosting gigs together but that was it – so it was kind of an experiment to see what our working dynamic might be like. What drew us to it was actually the similarity between the show and how Nick and I first started dating. When we first got together he was living in LA and me in NY, so we communicated mostly over text or the phone for the longest time, really only seeing each other when one of us had work in the other’s city. Obviously we had already seen each other when we started dating, but we loved the concept of this show where people meet and fall in love without relying on physical attraction or having the burden of outside distractions. None of us knew what they outcome would be, so it was a wonderful surprise to see the couples and love that resulted from season one!
AM: Will you be coming back for the next season and can you share anything for fans of the show?
VL: Yes! We are so excited to be starting filming for season two AND three in the next few weeks! Season 2 will be in Chicago and season 3 in Dallas. I can’t share too much, but I can promise you won’t have to wait too long before you get to see it all unfold.
AM: Tell us about your new role as Tara Barnett in Call Me Kat and why you wanted to be on this fun show?
VL: Yes – Tara is such a fun character to play and I really enjoy the sit-com space. I’m also a big fan of Mayim Bialik’s and working together and playing best friends has been such a joy. This was one of the first times a job approached me about a role they thought I’d be a fit for, and I feel so incredibly lucky to be working during an otherwise really difficult time.
AM: I know you haven't been on this show although you could be in an upcoming season, but last year many fans of the Masked Singer kept thinking that the Snow Owls were you and Nick when it was actually Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black! Would you ever consider being on this show and what would your costume be?
VL: It’s so funny seeing all the speculation around Nick and this show! We enjoy watching at home and even the kids love analyzing the contestants people think sound like him. I think I will leave the singing to Nick, but it certainly would be fun!
AM: In addition to playing roles in various shows and competing on Dancing with the Stars, you have hosted a number of great shows from TRL, Top Chef Junior, hosting various Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, you will be hosting a virtual awards show called Total Wireless Awards. Can you tell us more about this show and who is being honored?
VL: Yes! I’m so excited to be a part of a program that is so positive – I think we can all use more positivity after the past year. The Total Wireless Awards are featuring five amazing real-life individuals who have really done amazing for themselves, their families or their communities during a really challenging year.
We’ve got a single mom who is working so hard in order to give her three kids the best education possible, all while going to school herself. A high school student named Danny Goldberg who was inspired by his ER physician dad to find ways to help his community during lockdown and started Zoomers to Boomers – an organization that is now active in more than 30 cities across the globe! And a goofy, comedian dad who started making fun TikTok videos with his kindergarten aged-daughter to help make virtual learning more fun.
All of these amazing stories were made possible by virtual connection – something that Total Wireless offers at such an affordable price – plans start at just $25 a month with no-contract required. We’ll be releasing the five stories on Total Wireless’s Instagram page on March 16th and are asking folks to go vote for their favorite story. Then in a few weeks, I’ll be announcing the “fan favorite” winner and sitting down with them to reveal their grand prize!
AM: Are there upcoming projects that we should keep an eye out for that you can tell us about?
VL: I’ll be starting production for Netflix’s Love is Blind Season 2 & 3 and so excited for what’s ahead.

Since the launch of Netflix's Selling Sunset, we have enjoyed being able to get the scoop on the real estate market especially within one of the top agencies in The Oppenheim Group this docuseries. We have enjoyed seeing this team booking listings, holding open houses, celebs they work with and the drama that comes along. This month, our cover is luxury real estate brokerage owner, attorney, contractor and developer - Jason Oppenheim. We took some time to talk to the Selling Sunset star to find out how he transitioned from being a corporate lawyer and eventually to working in real estate. He talks with us about his firm, his team, the successful show, which has just been greenlit for a fourth and fifth season, as well as the importance of philanthropy and making it a team effort.
ATHLEISURE MAG: Prior to being in real estate, you were a corporate lawyer, what was the moment that you realized that you wanted to work in the real estate industry as I know that your great-great grandfather Jacob Stern, started his firm in the 1800s and was instrumental in creating a number of deals in the early development of LA?
JASON OPPENHEIM: That’s difficult. I left my law firm not knowing what I wanted to do and not having anything lined up. I went and traveled the world for 3 years after I quit my law firm. So I really wasn’t working for years after that. Even when I got back into the United States, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to get into real estate. I knew that it was a passion of mine and I gave it a shot. But I definitely wouldn’t say that I knew before I left law that I wanted to do real estate.
AM: Why did you decide to ultimately launch your own firm that you’re president and founder of?
JO: I was at Coldwell Banker for many years and getting experience and I was working on a team of two women. They taught me a lot and I actually really liked that team, but I didn’t enjoy working at such a large brokerage at Coldwell Banker. So that was kind of the impetuous of me leaving and just starting my own firm. I think that I had just developed enough of a client base that I felt comfortable and I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur and had always wanted to do my own thing. But I had to create that confidence and make sure that I had enough of a book of business to be able to do that.
AM: We have had a number of people that we have interviewed who began as lawyers and have transitioned into other careers, as well as our co-founder that has done the same. What skills from practicing law have also carried over to what you do within your industry now?
JO: Yeah I think that being a lawyer is probably one of the most applicable professions so I think that there are a lot of things that helped me as a lawyer that have been applied to me being in real estate. I think that creative thinking and critical thinking have been two of the most important things that I took. Being an advocate for your client is something that I understood and of course, just your legal acumen. So much of practicing real estate requires that the more understanding that you have of the law, documents, contracts etc. – I think that the better you will be as a real estate agent. I don’t think that there is probably more of a relevant profession for a real estate agent than as a lawyer!
AM: In terms of location and your territory, what areas do you guys cover?
JO: Oh all over Los Angeles really. Certainly, we are the most prolific agents in the Sunset Strip and Hollywood Hills. We also do a ton in Beverly Hills and we’re opening up a new office in Orange County and we’re getting a lot of new listings down there. I would really say all of Southern California.
AM: In terms of you opening another location, what is the process and/or criteria that you look for when it comes to making that commitment? I know in watching the show, there was talk and hope from some of the agents in terms of opening up in Miami?
JO: Well, it’s a very slow process. I mean I’ve been thinking for many years about opening a second office and I was very reticent to do so until I was certain about a lot of different factors. One of them is that there is a healthy luxury market, another one is great office space, another is that I am able to recruit top agents, another is that it’s a place that I love and enjoy – you know I have to be passionate about it and I’m not going to open up an office in an area that I wouldn’t want to live in myself! I’m probably going to buy a second home in Newport Beach. And also location! It needs to be far enough from LA where it makes sense. You want to expand when you’re doing this. Orange County by far, I thought was an important area that I wasn’t in. I think that there are others like The Valley, Miami, New York, but I thought that hands down, this was the best place for a second office.
AM: Before getting into the show, what is a typical day like for you and how involved are you with the agents that work with you?
JO: I mean a typical day. I’m up – usually, my dogs wake me up because they want to be fed maybe around 7am. I take my dogs to coffee every morning so I take them to a coffee shop, usually a different coffee shop for about half an hour. I go through emails and take things slow on my own. Then I come into the office and basically just work and catch up with my staff and go through emails. I go through showings that I have, meet with clients and a lot of it is on the phone. Sometimes I have interviews but a ton of phone calls – I mean dozens and dozens of phone calls. I don’t even know how many, but it is a lot.
AM: When it comes to onboarding your agents, what are you looking for to represent The Oppenheim Group?
JO: You know, an intelligent, thoughtful, sophisticated person. Experience is preferred but it is less important to me then I think raw intelligence and general ambition. Someone that I get along with.
These are people that I will be out with for lunch or at a listing appointment and it’s important to me that I get along with them and that they get along with everyone else! You know, it’s just about being with good people! I mean I really wouldn’t take an agent, no matter how successful they are, that he or she just wasn’t a good person!
AM: On the show we see some serious open houses that have had some fun themes that your team has put together that remind me of editor events that we can’t wait to get back to – what have been some of the favorite ones that your firm has been part of?
JO: I think that I always like a first open house because I think that is very exciting! So the first open house for a new great listing is pretty exciting. I do have to say that generally, my favorite open houses tend to be my favorite listings. Obviously, my favorite open houses tend to be those that I would want to stay at even if it wasn’t an open house - sexy view, tall ceilings, open floor plan and all the stuff that just kind of makes it more fun. More importantly, I would say, it’s the first one because for me it’s about meeting clients, meeting buyers and it’s also about price point. I like open houses at an attainable price point in the area. Sure it’s fun to sit at a $10 million dollar open house, but I would prefer to sit at a $3 or $4 million open house because I am going to meet more people.
AM: This past year has definitely made a lot of our workflows change in many ways, what did you do to navigate these times and how do you feel the market has been for you?
JO: You know, we’ve done all right. We had a decent year despite the pandemic. The luxury market is not only fine even thoughout the pandemic, but it is extremely well right now. I think that we were extremely fortunate and I think that our clients were extremely fortunate and that they have recovered from this. I wouldn’t say that there is any long-term impact at all.
AM: How did the concept of the show, Selling Sunset come about and ultimately, what are the takeaways that you want to know about this show when they are watching it?
JO: You know, we had been approached by different producers and agents for quite some time and both my brother and I were rather reticent to move forward on a show. But when Adam DiVello (Editor’s Note: Adam is formerly a Senior Production and Development Executive at MTV where he developed Laguna Beach. He left the network and launched Done and Done Productions and created as well as executive produced its successful spinoff, The Hills and The City. He is producing Selling Sunset.) reached out to us, we thought about it a bit more and we took a team meeting and I think he had a bit more influence with us and we started to slowly come around. We wanted Netflix, but we weren’t sure if we would get Netflix so we were excited about that!
In terms of what they would take away from it, you know what I would say? I would simply say, that they should just enjoy and watch the show! There’s so much about television now more than ever, just being able to sit down – for me, I like to sit down with my dogs and just sit down for a couple of hours and just destress and have fun! In many ways, I hope that that would be enough for me! I would hope that when people come up to me that they just say that they enjoyed the show, it makes them happy, it’s fun to watch, they enjoy looking at the real estate and that’s enough for me! If they come out of it with more of an understanding for real estate or a passion for it that would be great. I always think that real estate is such a great opportunity for investors and people generally. So if I can get people to be excited about that whether that means they join the profession and become real estate agents or they want to do it as an investment, I think that either one of those would be great simply for the show.
AM: How did you decide who would be on the show?
JO: I didn’t really decide. Obviously, it would be people at my brokerage but it was more of a production decision than anything else.
AM: As a fan of the show, when you and your team are in the office, we’re always thinking about how close you are together. Is it ever distracting when you’re all in there together between doing calls, maintaining business etc?
JO: Well I do step out sometimes to make phone calls from time to time as everyone will! I do like the idea of an open office, but there are certainly negative effects to having such an open office.
AM: Recently, you were greenlit for a 4th and 5th season. How long do you film each season and how are you able to juggle the demands of your business while integrating the show into it?
JO: It’s not terrible for me. The filming requirements aren’t as demanding for me as they are for some of the other women so I manage ok. But you know, it’s certainly a balancing act and we just work really hard. So we end up just having to work more hours in the day to be honest. That’s ok because we all love what we do and we are all capable of doing that.
AM: You’re getting ready to film the next season and for avid viewers, there was a lot going on! Can you share what a general idea of when this will air?
JO: Well we haven’t started filming yet so there isn’t anything that I can tell you about that!
AM: Alright then. We’ll just have to stay tuned!
What have you learned about yourself in filming this show?
JO: You know, one of my biggest concerns was since I’m a private person, I was concerned about people coming up to me. But I think that what may be a surprise to most is how much I enjoy kind of just having the ability to make people be happy and to smile. Just to enjoy watching people smile is really enjoyable for me. I love when a young person comes up to the window and takes a photo of me and they’re just happy! You can kind of tell that you made their day happier and that feels great! That was one of the things that I wasn’t expecting as much.
AM: Clearly you’re very fit, what are your workout routines that you like to do to stay in shape?
JO: Just the gym and that’s it. I wish that I had something more exciting to say. I mean, I workout less than what people think. I workout for less than 30 minutes and I get teased sometimes on how little I workout, but I don’t do it for so long. I go to Monarch Athletic Club or Equinox.
AM: Do you have certain routines that you like to do?
JO: I like to do everything.
AM: How do you take time for yourself?
JO: Oftentimes, ironically enough, I sit down and watch Netflix you know? Because I really enjoy it. Most days, I’m at home watching TV with my dogs and it makes me pretty happy. I like to go out to dinner with my friends, but most of the time, I like to sit, watch a game, sit down with my dogs with some frozen yogurt and watch Netflix.
AM: One of the things we enjoyed watching in the show was how much philanthropy is very important to you and you get your office involved as well. What organizations do you like to give of your time and/or donate to?
JO: Yeah that episode that you saw on Selling Sunset is the one that I love giving to – Food on Foot. I like to not only spend my time when I can, but more importantly, I like to be charitable with some of the income that I have as I think that they do a really, really good job. I think that we’re going to be on Celebrity Family Feud soon and we have chosen that charity so hopefully we’ll win some money on Celebrity Family Feud.
AM: For #TRIBEGOALS, we like to ask those that are trailblazers in their industry, who are 3 people that you are inspired by that got you to where you are today whether you know them in person or follow them from afar.
JO: I like Albert Einstein definitely as someone that I look up to. I’d say that I was very lucky to have in both of my professions in real estate and in law – I was able to work with very successful people that earned my respect and were able to teach me about leadership, experience and professionalism. The woman that I worked under when I was at Coldwell Banker, her name is Joyce Rey. She is still an icon in real estate and she taught me a lot. Then when I was a lawyer, Daniel Petrocelli is one of the leading attorneys in the country as well, just as Joyce is one of the leading women in real estate. So I guess, I was just really lucky in my professions in law and in real estate to work with someone like Joyce Rey and Dan Petrocelli. I think that they had such an influence on me in terms of my professional life.
