BEYOND THE ROSE | MICHELLE YOUNG

January 26, 2023

Earlier this month, we had a fun virtual event for VOT3D IO: A Conversation with Michelle Young! We talked with on of our favorite The Bachelorette leads to talk about her time on the show, self-care and what she's up to as she continues to use her platform to bring awareness and education to topics that she cares about. After our conversation with Michelle Young, guests were given some time to discuss and connect over the party chat box and also answer questions in the live treasure hunt for prizes

We also wanted to share this interview here in this issue as we know how many people are fans of the franchise and want to get to know her more beyond the show!

ATHLEISURE MAG: I’ve seen every season of The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise. One of the favorite things that I enjoy, is seeing those that will be competing in The Bachelor or The Bachelorette. Getting to see what they look like, who they are, their backstory, etc. When I saw you on The Bachelor, I called it immediately! Michelle is beautiful, she’s from the Midwest, just like me and even if she doesn’t get married to The Bachelor, she can definitely helm her own season as The Bachelorette and I hope that they give her the chance to do that.

What drew you to wanting to be on the show?

MICHELLE YOUNG: I feel like that it is a huge question! Ok, well in order to see me come on The Bachelor, you would have to wait until week 3 or week 4!

AM: Right?

MY: That was not part of the plan, I will say that! Honestly, I was never like, “ I really want to be on this show.” It’s something that I watched with my mom for a little bit and I always felt like I could do that, but I never thought that the opportunity would come across my plate. I typically was always interested in how do people get on the show. Do they get nominated?

I knew that there was an application process. I didn’t apply, I was nominated and to this day, I have no idea who nominated me. Nobody has owned up to it. I know my friends really really well and I remember when I was chosen as The Bachelorette, I asked if they could please look into this. I wanted a name and I wanted to know who was lying to me and they were literally like, “no, your Instagram profile got sent in anonymously and no one has ever come forward with it.” It seems kind of weird because if you know me, I got on Instagram literally like 2 years ago and there weren’t really any pictures when they nominated me – I had 2 pictures and I didn’t like any photos – it looked like it was a fake account!

I don’t know. I was nominated and I thought it was kind of a scam! I got emails and eventually, I messaged back and they were kind of at the end of that whole process. They put me on a Zoom really quickly and on phone calls. It was a pretty long process and they expedited me through it and then I remember sitting there with the contract in front of my family saying, “ok, so –

AM: This is happening!

MY: Yeah, we went through the pros and cons and it just kind of happened and it was like this thing that just kept knocking on my door. It was honestly the most perfect opportunity where I was able to teach long distance for a little bit before I was actually on the show, so I didn’t have to miss as much teaching as I would have had to before. It was a mistake that I ended up being on the show, but here we are!

AM: I’m leaning towards, that it is definitely someone you know and they they don’t want to say, “yup I’m the one that started all of this!”

MY: I know right? Oh my gosh!

AM: It could be a family member, a puppy – somebody in your world was in the mix!

MY: I don’t know! I have no idea, but here I am!

AM: In learning about your background, we got to know that you were a Division I basketball player, you’re also a teacher and someone that is really straight forward and is never afraid to speak your truth and to be very honest. How did you prepare yourself to engage and interact in this very unique environment?

MY: Honestly, Division I Athletics is kind of dog-eat-dog on its own. I was always in competitive basketball, participating and in competition of some sorts. When you’re in the room, constructive criticism, unconstructive criticism – people can be mean. Women can be mean at times too, especially in basketball when you’re playing and you take a Senior’s playing time and that doesn’t go over particularly well. A lot of not so nice things were said at times. You kind of just build tough skin and you really do rely on who you are and who you are as a person and using your family as support. So, I kind of feel like and I don’t know if this is a strength or weakness, but going through the Division I Basketball experience that I went through, I went through a lot. I kind of feel like that I can handle anything that is coming my way. I know that I will be able to get through it and to have the tools that I will be able to need to get through it.

So, that was the same thing with this and I didn’t really know the Reality TV world or the social media world as much as I do now. So that wasn’t at the forefront part of my mind. I can tell you that it was brought to the forefront of my mind when I got into that bubble that I did when I came in late and with everything that was thrown at me. It definitely has come in handy and now on social media, there are a lot of haters out there!

AM: I love how you said that sports prepared you. Being from Indiana myself, going to IU, we believe that life is sport and sport is life. The way you are in sports says a lot about how you are in life and how you will navigate it. So when I came here to NY, I knew that if I could handle what I did then, I’d be able to do this as well. So that totally rings true to me.

When you went from The Bachelor to The Bachelorette, what was your process in terms of deciding how you were going to helm your own season and to make it your own?

MY: I think that my biggest focus was that it was a show. It’s a show where the leads have not typically looked like me in the past. I had a lot of conversations very up front with Executive Producers – even during The Bachelorette interview process with things that were non-negotiables for me. Things that I didn’t want it to be as it’s not a one size fits all situation. I had other things that I wanted to be able to speak about. I had Black stories specifically that I wanted told and it was really important to me that there were certain things that were not cut out where my season wend through the editing process. Those were things that I was definitely thinking about. For me, personally on my end, really asking hard questions about race, about experiences up front and not having producers trying to control my conversations and just being up front as you said, I’m a very blunt person. I’m going to ask these things because I need to know these things up front because I’m not going to spend energy on certain people that do not align with certain things as a Black female.

I set those boundaries very clearly and said, “if I’m going to sign on this dotted line, you’re going to know these things about me,” and there was respect at that time going both ways. So that’s how I was able to move forward. I definitely came guns a blazing and I came ready to throw those questions out there regardless.

AM: As someone who is just a fan of the show but was also rooting you on. There were times personally, when I would just tear up because I was so excited that you were able to have certain conversations and that you didn’t try to hem and haw. You let it be known what it was, what the reality is and if that person didn’t see it that way, there was the door.

MY: Yeah absolutely! It is a Reality TV show and I get that and it comes with a lot of different things. But at the same time, if you want us to have real relationships and real feelings, then there is also that part where we have to have real conversations. Those were my real conversations for sure.

AM: We have all dated at some point, but few of us have done it on TV in front of millions of households. What are tips that you learned that benefited your mental health and kept you grounded in this process?

MY: I will honestly say that when you’re dating in the public eye, it’s really weird because when you go through your experience of dating, it’s not first in the public eye. It’s being filmed and it feels very public, but you’re not actually dealing with the reactions of the public quite yet until after that certain experience is over.

So for me, there was always that sense of fear of what kind of edit am I going to get? I will say that anyone going into that kind of position, if you do not waver from who you are, you will be fine. Because, you’re going to navigate just like who you would navigate around in life. You might make mistakes, but those would be mistakes that you would make in the real world as well. But for me, it was like, if everyone is doing one thing and I don’t learn from that or it doesn’t go with who I am as a person, I’m not going to do it. There’s power of suggestion and it may seem like you’re forced to do this, but no. There is nothing that says that you have to do this, that you have to say that or that you have to gravitate towards that. It’s put out there and you can either take it or leave it.

A lot of that was me leaving a lot of those things in the first season of The Bachelor and saying, that’s not who I am. It’s not who I am, I can’t speak to that or I won’t/can’t say that or I won’t bandwagon hop! I think that a lot of people get caught up in that and that really hurts afterwards as it’s a huge learning experience because 1, you come off as a really mean or nasty person which is not who you are and you have these regrets. But if you’re consciously thinking through that, then it’s you and you can handle that.

AM: There are a number of people who are single and dating. So when you were navigating that on your dates whether they were 1-on-1 or group dates, what were qualities that you were looking for that were red flags that you wanted to avoid?

MY: I think it was really that you were in a situation that’s not normal. I think a lot of people when they get into a weird situation, it’s awkward and that can be a huge turnoff. Honestly and typically, in the normal world, that would probably have been a red flag for me. But in this situation, it’s more like – at the end of the day, you need to be able to relax in order to be able to get to know somebody. But if you’re too smooth in front of the camera, if you’re too comfortable with 50 people watching you kiss – then I’m thinking, why are you here? So, that was my red flags. The people who would be too smooth with things. I always messed up. I tripped, I fell half the time, I stumbled over my words, I could laugh at myself – it was uncomfortable to be in the situation at times because again, there were cameras and random people staring at you with everything that you do and sometimes, I’m standing there by myself. Somebody who would come into that and be awkward with me in that and just grow into it, but be real – that’s what I was looking for.

AM: For fans of the show, we all have our favorites from Hometowns. I always like it when Franco Lacosta is there for an episode. He’s a very good friend who I adore who has shot me before so shout out to him. What were your favorite moments in your season of The Bachelorette?

MY: Oh gosh! Honestly night 1! Night 1 is just something that I will always remember because it never kicks in that you are The Bachelor/Bachelorette or the lead until you’re standing there and then you’re like, “oh shit, there are the limos” and they’re starting to pull up and you’re there. You’re there in the way that you don’t have your phone, you don’t have your family to talk to, you don’t have your friends – it’s just you. You’re sitting in your own emotions and I had this moment when it just dawned on me that I was The Bachelorette – what am I doing? It really was a magical night and it was all about excitement. You know that there is going to be drama, but none of it emotionally affected me and it was just something that I embraced every second even though it was a really long night!

AM: How long is that night?

MY: I started at 3pm where I was actually in my dress – so hair, makeup everything was done. So that means I was in the makeup chair at 12pm. I got to bed finally at 11:45am the next morning. So that’s what the producers would tell the guys the next night. Because they would say that they were so tired and we took our group picture at 9:30am for you guys, but Michelle had to recap all of you. It’s a long night!

AM: I had no idea. I thought it was like 6 hours!

MY: No, you can’t start filming until it gets dark and then there are a lot of guys that you have to go through. Everyone is learning the ropes of everything so it’s a long one!

AM: Wow! That’s a new nugget for me!

Well, you filmed over the course of a number of weeks and participated in a lot of activities and had a lot of conversations. How did you incorporate self-care so that you could achieve some sort of a balance and feel like yourself?

MY: Ohh. Honestly, I would say that that was one of the hardest things for the leads. I went off of 3 hours of sleep for the first few weeks. For me, I do fairly well with no sleep and I just went back to that athletic mindset that I just had to push through and I had to keep grinding, keep a smile on your face or whatever you’re feeling. But it’s tricky. You don’t get time alone, you don’t get time to yourself unless you’re looking at the inside of your eyelids completely sleeping.

AM: Oh wow. That leads me to the next question that when you weren’t filming, how did you pass the time? But you’re saying that you didn’t have time alone!

MY: When I was the lead, you’re with someone 24/7. When I was a contestant on The Bachelor, when you get further out and there is less women there, you don’t have the cocktail parties, you go straight to the ceremonies and so you do have a little more downtime. I will say that as a contestant, I did find down time fairly frequently, because I learned that instead of just asking if I could go take a nap, I would just take a nap and because I was one of the people that wasn’t participating in drama, it would take them a minute to realize that I was gone. They would look for me and it gave me an extra 20 mins. I would sleep in other places like under a table, behind the couch.

AM: It’s like a hide-and-go-seek!

MY: Yeah! A little TLC.

AM: From a Bachelor Nation perspective, there are a number of commitments that you had from The Tell All and After The Final Rose. What has been your favorite part of this whole experience?

MY: It was very much being able to bring my family and friends along for the ride. You get to do a lot of really cool things. There are a lot of perks to it and most perks don’t come free. They definitely come with stresses on your mental health by being in the public, but being able to travel to different places and being able to go and do things like Jingle Ball – I got to bring my parents to Jingle Ball. I got to take my friends on a really cool excursion and trip and there are a lot of fun experiences that you typically wouldn’t get. I’ve been in this role and it’s cool to see them and their faces light up and to have them be apart of it.

AM: Who are your go-to’s in terms of chatting with people in The Bachelor universe? I know that there is the Bachelor Chat that you guys have, but do you have your core people there?

MY: I have my girls that I’m very close with. I’m close with Ryan Claytor from Matt’s season, Bri Springs, Serena Pitt, Becca Kuffrin – I think that you just find people that you really align with and even though you haven’t known them for as long as some of your other friends, you just get so close so quickly when you’re in a similar situation and you’ve all dated the same person or just different things that the public with pressures that they put on you. I definitely have so many group chats going on and I keep in touch with all of those people.

AM: What are some dating tips that you would suggest to those that may just be getting out there?

MY: It’s so hard! Getting back out there! I used to be a very closed off person. I would give a lot, I loved very hard, but when it came to talking about emotions and feelings, whether it was friends, family, relationships – I was very comfortable with someone else sharing, I created a safe space for them with me, but it was hard for me to share that back. This show truly taught me how relationships and even friendships can flourish when you're ttruly vulnerable and when yourself. It’s about being honest from the get go and it really does help things blossom and it’s scary because you’re scared about rejection and you’re scared about somebody not liking what you’re putting forward, but if that’s the case, yeah – it might sting initially. But essentially, you don’t want someone that doesn’t love you to your complete naked form. So that’s what I would say, be vulnerable and truthful right up front. If they don’t like it, they’re not your person.

AM: Absolutely! You can exit!

MY: The door is right here!

AM: One of the things that I enjoyed during the season as you navigated the journey, was that you focused on talking about your identity, the pressures around it and the importance of acceptance. Why was that so important to you to drive that awareness to people?

MY: For me, it was just a huge part of who I was. I grew up in Minnesota and I grew up in an environment for a very long time where I was the only person of color. That created a lot of different awareness’s for me. It was something that I also battled with in my relationships going forward. There were certain debates that were happening in a relationship where I didn’t want to have to explain those things and I shouldn’t have to explain those things. In order to make sure that that didn’t happen again, I had to have those conversations. I didn’t realize how much it was going to connect with people to see that side. I’m very happy that I was able to show that.

AM: I remember when I was watching it and I kept saying thank you. Whether it’s based on race or just to be accepted as a person, to be that vulnerable was so touching. It was like, inspirational Michelle and every episode had that in it.

MY: Aww thank you!

AM: With the conclusion of the season and after breaking up with Nayte earlier this year, how did you take care of yourself and heal from that relationship so that you could move on?

MY: For me, dating in the public eye – getting in the public eye is one thing and breaking up in the public eye are really difficult. With that relationship, I think that what pushed me and challenged me to move on as I did was that I was continuously being hurt by the actions of this other person and so that really forced me to make sure I did my healing very much so up front and that I healed fully, that I was creating a healthy thought process in my mind and I was responding to different things in a healthy manner because that was the moment that I realized that your emotions could get very out of control and it could be at the expense of what somebody else is doing or what the public is doing. I knew that I would have to see this person dating somebody else – physically see it which you might not have to do when you’re dating somebody normally. People are going to speculate, it’s going to be constant talk, you’re going to be constantly attached to that person. So I just really took that in and realized that I needed to give myself closure. I needed to make sure that I was confident in myself and that I’m fully healed in myself and self-talk was a huge piece of that – of reassuring and really sorting through my thoughts as they were coming through that breakup so that I had control of my emotions, I had control of my pain and that I wasn’t just receiving pain from outside sources.

AM: As a whole, what did you learn about yourself?

MY: I learned that I can truly give myself closure without getting it from somebody else. I didn’t realize how powerful that would be. But I think that in relationships, when you go through a break up, especially if it’s not how you thought that things would go or maybe you’re on the receiving end of it, you want to look at the other person – we talk about that closure part of the conversation – you want it from the other person and there are times when that just isn’t going to happen or it’s just not possible. So what are you supposed to do? Leave it unclosed for the rest of your life? For me, the biggest thing that I learned or showed myself was that no matter what situation happened, I could give myself closure. I don’t have to have all the answers and I can give myself the answers enough to be able to move forward. That right there was something that if that was the only answer I could take away from 2022, I’m 100% content with that.

AM: I know that you’re in LA right now. Why did you decide to take a break away from teaching?

MY: With teaching, the last 2 years teaching through a pandemic – the things that teachers had to go through and even nurses! There were so many things that were impacted by COVID and with teaching, yes being The Bachelorette and teaching at the same time as my season was airing, that was stressful and maybe expedited things a little bit more than just in teaching. I was getting to the point that I was so burnt out. I knew that that summer I was not going to be able to recharge fully to where I needed to get to. To be honest, the school year before hand, I felt and a lot of teachers alongside me, felt that they were going into that 2021/2022 school year not fully charged after COVID because we just weren’t taken care of by the school system or the education system. I just needed a break and I needed to take a breather and I honestly know that it was the best decision that I could have made. It was not an easy decision because I left college so passionate about teaching and that whole entire profession is built on passion. When that cracks, if we don’t take care of that, then we’re going to continue to have bigger and bigger issues. So for me, it was me looking at myself in the mirror and saying, “I need to acknowledge that I need a break, right now.” It is something that I want to be able to come back to or it is something that I want to be able to do a passion around, but I couldn’t return that next school year because I needed that breather. There were a lot of teachers right next to me that had to do the same thing. It’s sad because it’s like another breakup. You don’t want to break up with one of your passions! It’s been tricky!

AM: I think that checking in with yourself and finding that balance whatever that means to each person and being able to recognize when you’re feeling overwhelmed or burnt out is so important! Although it may not be for everyone, what were some of the things that you noticed that were signs that you needed to take the time?

MY: I would say that feeling of waking up and knowing that you’re not yourself. I’m an early riser, a get up at 5am, hit the gym, respond back to my friends and family fairly quickly, organizing different activities – I’m a very upbeat and bubbly person. I was just exhausted and I was able to still do those things and I was able to keep up those things, but I wasn’t happy doing them necessarily all of the time. I was just definitely run down. I could feel it and I was getting sick all of the time. For me, my stress tends to show in my physical health before it does in my mental emotional side.

AM: Well you’re adamant about using your platform to educate others. Why is being an advocate for mental health so important to you?

MY: For me, it’s really about making sure that youth, especially, youth of color understand that it is ok to ask for health. It’s ok to talk about your emotions. I used to be this former athlete that was taught to have thick skin and to rub some dirt on it. Yes, there is completely a point that when you fall down, you should bounce back up, but if you are hurting, it’s ok to talk about it.

AM: That’s something that I talk a lot about whether it’s my sister or a friend, that it’s ok if we’re saying ouch. We can be strong and we can trailblaze and be unicorns, but we still bleed and we still get bumps!

What have you been doing post The Bachelorette since you’re in LA and living your best life as we see your awesome pictures on IG.

MY: I’m laughing at that because this is the biggest question that people ask me. If you look at all of the haters, they think that I schedule random photoshoots and take pictures of myself! I promise you that I am doing more things then just that!

AM: You’re a whole person!

MY: I know right? Believe it or not, if it’s not on social media, it didn’t happen apparently! Oh gosh! Right now, I’m finding that next piece of how I can fulfill my passion of giving back to others, working with children, helping the youth, motivational speaking – all of these different things and kind of figuring out that brand of who this next Michelle Young is. I do have a lot of very exciting things that are in the works that haven’t come out yet and so I can’t say too much, but you will definitely see my speaking, I will leave it at that for now.

AM: Because I’m envisioning that I would see you acting, films/videos, collaborations –

MY: Honestly, I’m going to do it all! I’ll say that!

AM: Ok!

MY: You’re going to see me walking the red carpet, see me motivationally speaking, you might see me in and out of some schools, You’re going to see me everywhere!

AM: One of the things that I liked is when you were in that transition from teaching to all of the things that you will be doing in the future, you shared that you would do some influencer work and that a percentage of what you would make would go towards to various charities or organizations that were selected by your followers. Why did you want to be accountable and share that with people? You didn’t have to and why did you want to do it in this way?

MY: For me, anytime someone says that word influencer, everybody cringes. You know what that words casts on some people and there is such a thing as positive influencing. Influencing is such a tricky game to play and coming out of the ABC The Bachelor/Bachelorette in general, a lot of people tend to go the influencer route. What that has meant in the past is that you’re working with brands, you’re going to these carpets and doing all of these different things. For me, there are products that I would 100% recommend whether I’m being paid or not, but I want to change the influencing game. You do have a platform, you do have a voice and you can encourage these products and these brands that are working with you to give back as well. You can bring your viewers in with it and you can create an entire message that goes with it. Like the Ice Bucket Challenge and all these things that were started! Social media has so many negative negative things about it and this can be a positive one! So that’s why. I want to be able to challenge not only people who follow me and supporters, but I also want to challenge the brands that work with me to also give back. Ultimately, we’re doing a really good thing.

AM: Now that you’re in LA for awhile, what are 3 places that you enjoy grabbing a bite or a cocktail, where are 3 places that you like to shop at and what are 3 places you like to workout at?

MY: Oh wow! So these may not be as great as you think because I have really been bouncing back and forth between LA and Minnesota quite a bit. Then I got done with this period of time where I got really sick, then I was healthy and then I was sick again. Whoever had that mysterious illness where it’s not COVID but it’s influenza – that knocked me on my butt! It’s not great and you’re turning the corner for what feels like forever.

One of my favorite places to eat honestly, is Catch. I went there with Kaitlyn Bristowe and it was a really awesome spot. Where else have I been? Elephante – I feel like everybody says that one and so I have to ay it! My third one I’m going to keep to myself because it’s a hole in the wall place and I feel like…

AM: If you say it, you’re never going to get a seat in there again because people will want to check it out!

MY: Exactly, or people will go looking, you know?

When it comes to shopping, anywhere at The Grove. I’m a Nike girl – I love getting some sneakers. I haven’t done that much shopping recently actually. But oh Target! I’m a Target girl. You ask me how I take care of my mental health, Target!

AM: Oh yeah, you go in and say you need lip balm and then 100 and some dollars later, you have all of these things!

MY: Exactly and then you leave without the lip balm! And you have to go back!

AM: You have to go back for sure!

MY: That’s why we forget it so that we have to go back!

I have not been to too many fitness studios yet. I’ve avoided Equinox – no shade on Equinox, I’m sure that I will check it out eventually. I literally went to LA Fitness the other day. I’m a runner. I go outside and run. I haven’t done too much here. I’ve done a lot of at home stuff. I have dumbbells and weights here. When I’m at home, Lifetime Fitness is my go-to.

AM: I love Lifetime Fitness. They have an awesome facility here in NY.

MY: I’m so jealous! The nearest one here is 30 mins away. I don’t know, shout them out and maybe they can build one across the street!

AM: We know you like staying active and that you like to run, are there 2 other things that you like to do in your fitness routine?

MY: I’m trying to get back into a pickup basketball game. That cardio, running up and down the basketball court, that humbles me real quick especially when you get back to it. Honestly that and swimming. I grew up with a pool and I love swimming laps as it’s just such great cardio. Anything where I can go out and about. I’ll play tennis with my parents, they’re amazing tennis players. Winter sports, I’ll ski a little bit.

AM: I love snowboarding!

MY: I’m jealous! Honestly, I want to learn how to snowboard. I never have up to this point. In athletics, coaches wouldn’t let us snowboard because so many people would get hurt.

AM: Oh yeah, you could break an ankle.

MY: Now I can flail down the diamond all day! I might just end up on TMZ or something ha! My hats over here my gloves are over there!

AM: What do you want your legacy to be in terms of the impact that you’ve left?

MY: I think it’s incredibly important for people to not stop learning about how others around them work or think. It’s about being open minded to learn and I think that’s a huge part of coming through the experience of what I just came through where you really are a rare breed which is sad to say. But as a woman of color and just being from Minnesota with everything happening with George Floyd, cultivating young minds to accept those around them to think outside the box to not always go about life the exact way that everyone has in the past – to challenge things. Ultimately, to be a kind person and to just give back. Once you make it to the top, you want to be able to extend your arm back and pull others up and show them the route to be able to give back to them. So when I’m no longer here, someone that I impacted is now making it their mission to impact someone that is below them. That’s what I call a legend or leaving a mark so that the cycle doesn’t stop with them.

AM: Are there projects that you are thinking about being part of that you can share whether it’s a specific one or a vertical that you want to tackle?

MY: I’ve worked a lot with kids and I will say that I will definitely be around students, around young minds very soon in the near future. I’ve done a lot with Be the Match and giving back to that. THE BACHELOR S25. E11. | THE SEASON FINALE + AFTER THE ROSE

March 15, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see tonight’s 11th episode, spoilers are ahead! Tonight is the final episode. We’re down to Michelle and Rachael as Matt James has to make the big decision on who will get the final rose. We also have After the Rose which is teasing more shockers! Before we get to that, we meet Matt’s mom, Patty and his older brother John who have come to help him out.

We kick off with Michelle first. His mother and brother ask her a lot of questions and it seems like she is connecting with both of them. His mother notes that she’s happy that Matt seems to be in a good place and has so much optimism.

Next up is Rachael. It’s such a strange place to see someone who from the beginning we liked for Matt - until we heard about a number of her problematic pictures in plantations. We definitely want to hear more when she’s on After the Rose. That aside for the moment, she gets a motherly grilling to find out more about her. Although John likes seeing his brother in a new light, he also grills her privately asking her about previous relationships and what she likes about Matt. Patty connects with Rachael and shares tears with her. It seems like Patty could go either way on the two women that are left.

After 2 great dates, his mom lets him know that although he can be in love with someone, does that mean that he should get engaged immediately? He’s left with doubts as they didn’t provide him the clarity that he was looking for. He decides to reach out to Chris Harrison and wants to figure out what he should do and how he should look at the task ahead of him. Once again, the idea of the conversation between him and Chris is ironic seeing that Chris’ position with the show seems to be on a bit of a pause. Chris seems to scoff a bit at the fact that Matt is thinking about what his mom told him. Chris asks him does he still want to get engaged and Matt seems to be pumping the breaks potentially on getting down on one knee. We can’t blame Chris for asking point blank, what he intends to do - Matt states that he still wants to be open and honest with both of them as they deserve that. He also still has a last date with each one of them.

Even though he is battling his own questions on what to do in the process, we join him on his date with Michelle. This will be the last time that they will be able to hang out with one another. Michelle is ready to “do the real world” with Matt. They end up on top of the resort looking down at their date spot which is on the ground. They will repel down the building to get there. They coach each other down the side of the building and thankfully, make it safely down without incident.

As they sit next to the outdoor fire, he asks her about how their talks went when she met his family. Matt lets her know that he wanted them to see who he met and the potential of her being in the group. Michelle asks will he be able to get to the point to make a decision. He tells her that he is thinking of everything that he needs to consider to make the best decision and the gravity of the choice that he makes. Matt realizes that Michelle is sure about where she wants to be and he knows that he isn’t which makes him feel conflicted.

Matt knows that he has to talk with Michelle so that he can ensure that he is making the right decision. Michelle lets him know that she came into the experience, looking for a teammate and that she is in love with him. She can’t imagine having anyone else in this experience with her. As he’s gifted Mr. and Mrs. James’ jersey’s from Michelle, he realizes that he needs to be upfront with her. He puts them to the side and she can tell that he’s thinking a lot about what is taking place for him in the next couple of days. He lets her know that he is having doubts and he knows that he shouldn’t have any. He tells her it’s the first thing he has ever felt that is different than what he has been feeling. She asks him to let him know what he wants - whether she should stop or fight for him and he says that he can’t get there with her. This is pretty heartbreaking and honestly, pretty cruel. Although he says it wasn’t a switch, she definitely got shocked with this news as he has never given her any other indication on what’s been on his mind - other then being in love with her. It seems like anytime he’s asked a serious question, he tends to tell the person that he’s not able to get there.

Chris meets up with him and says that he knows that breaking up with Michelle was tough. Matt admits that he loved her, but he wasn’t in love with her. He then thinks about Rachael and realizes that he’s not there with her either - he knows that he needs some time.

Rachael is excited about her date (obviously she has no clue about everything else that has happened) and hears a knock on the door. Chris is there and tells her that he was with Matt last night, that he was emotional and lost and that he needs some time. Chris tells her that there will be no date today. Without question, that’s a lot to process and leaves so many questions for her. She has been navigating her own emotions and there hasn’t been any indication that he would do something like this. We can definitely understand her feelings on this one. So, it looks like, she’ll have to wait until the next day - decision day - to see him.

The show continues on as he sits with Neil Lane to pick out a ring. Matt thinks by holding it, maybe he will be able to get there. Even Neil knows, there is only one woman left - he asks if Rachael is expecting a proposal. Matt says that what she expects is honesty. Neil feels that since he’s aware of where he is, there’s something in that and they can look at rings if he wants and if he opts to not do it, then that’s fine. Over the past few seasons, it’s been nice to see one of our favorite jewelers share stories about who he is and why these rings are so important.

Matt sends Rachael a note to let her know that he wants to meet her at the lake to give her answers. Matt arrives in a suit and Chris joins him. Matt still has uncertainty and feels heavy compared to what he thought he would be feeling going into it. He tells Chris that he loves her, smiles as he says it; however, he feels that it’s only when he sees her that it will all come together for him.

Rachael meets Matt and lets him know how she is feeling and where she’s at. She lets him know that she pictured this moment so differently - especially with him canceling their date. She lets him know that she hated not being able to be there with and for him. She assures him that she won’t run when it gets tough and she wants him to know that she is here and wants him to be happy.

Matt tells her that everything he wanted, he found with her. He tells her that rushing into an engagement is not what he wants to do. He says that he can’t propose to her today and that that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to lose her. He wants to live the life he has imagined with her and for them to build on that and he tells her that he loves her. In terms of the finale, the decision has been made and it seems like they’re both happy and ready to continue their journey on their own terms.

AFTER THE ROSE

It feels like regardless of whatever took place during the season finale, that this is the main event where we hope to get a lot more answers that are in real-time as so many things took place socially outside of the show. Tonight’s episode is hosted by Emmanuel Acho who will surely talk about a number of the issues in and outside of the show in a frank and open way. In addition, we’ll see who will be The Bachelorette which is about to begin or just started production for the show which will drop this summer.

Emmanuel kicks off the show with Michelle as she walks us through the last hours of being with Matt and what it’s like to watch it back. She asked him to have 2 minutes to talk for closure and he refused to sit down and talk with her. That definitely seems like a Matt that we haven’t really seen before and is a bit shocking. Michelle explains that she’s hurt about the Antebellum pictures that Rachael participated in and that although she thinks that she’s a good person, she has a lot of learning to do. In terms of Chris’ support for Rachael and the way that he talked with Rachel Lindsay, she felt the weight and the exhaustion of those conversations and responses.

Matt comes out and lets Michelle know that he is still processing everything. She explains that he left without a word, producers were in her room and saw how she was hurting and she asked to see him for clarity and not to change his mind - she just wanted inner peace and he said no. He lets her know that he can’t justify why he did what he did although he didn’t know she was hurting (which we will call BS on that - she had no indication that he would dump her so of course you know she was hurt). Emmanuel asks about how she feels about Matt. She explains that she still cares for him and is not in love with him like she was on the show. We love the little burns that Michelle gave in terms of not closing his eyes when he kisses, telling people “thank you for sharing” and more. It was a bittersweet conversation, but one that covered the main points that took place between one another.

Emmanuel and Matt talk about what it’s like to be a Black person navigating what it’s like in terms of how you present yourself, speak etc. There is an awareness of your space and the fact that you may be interacting with people or be seen by those who are not used to being around Black people and there is a need to present your best self. As the first Black Bachelor, he felt the weight of that. Emmanuel then talks about Rachael and her social imagery that has resurfaced. Matt explains that at first he stood by her when it was in the rumor stage; however, once he realized that these incidents happened, he questioned how she could be with him as a Black man and not understand what those actions meant, even though it was 3 years ago. As they are no longer together, he looks forward to her doing the work and being where she needs to be. Emmanuel lets him know that he will talk with Rachael alone before the two of them get to see each other for the first time after their breakup.

Rachael explains that she didn’t think about how wearing the dresses could be an issue with Matt as a Black man. She explains that she is doing the work to understand and educate herself and ultimately to put it in action. Upon seeing Matt she explains that she loves him and understands how it would have been difficult to break up with her in light of what she actively participated in. It’s clear that they will not get back together again and whether Rachael truly understands the ramifications of what she did is still questionable.

The Bachelorette will have 2 separate seasons Katie will be in the first season this summer and then she will be followed by Michelle for the fall season! Now, we know that Kaitlyn Bristowe and Tayshia Adams will be the hosts - does that mean they will host it together or one will be attached to a dedicated season?

This season, we tweeted about The Bachelor (@AthleisureMag + with our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Director, Kimmie Smith @ShesKimmie) to share reactions about what took place during the show.

We also suggest a podcast that we enjoy, Wondery’s Bachelor Happy Hour which is hosted by Rachel Lindsay (contestant on The Bachelor Season 21; The Bachelorette Season 13) and co-hosted by Becca Kufrin (contestant on The Bachelor Season 22; The Bachelorette Season 14) to get their feedback throughout the season as well as insights into upcoming seasons!

THE BACHELOR S25. E10. | IT'S FANTASY SUITES WEEK

March 8, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see tonight’s 10th episode, spoilers are ahead! Tonight, we’re back to the show (there has been so much speculation since The Women’s Tell All as well as what is currently taking place in real time - for now, we’ll stay with the show) and we see the remaining 3 women: Bri, Rachael and Michelle as they all share their journey and being ready to be with Matt. From their individual insights, they all come together to do a general chat until they are interrupted by Chris Harrison who reminds them that they will have an amazing day and night with him along with the option to use a Fantasy Suite card on the overnight to do what they wish. He reminds them that it’s the time to really talk with Matt James. He leaves them a date card and first up is Michelle.

We join Matt as he grapples with how he was brought up and how it has informed how he been in relationships as well as have run from. He feels that in order to go forward and to understand what he needs to know, he needs to have an important conversation with his father who happens to be on his doorstep. Matt addresses that the lack of his father’s presence and his father creating additional families didn’t allow him to have conversations. He tries to talk with his father but he can’t have a real conversation that focuses on his father’s infidelity. His father explains that he didn’t have a dad when he grew up as he was killed at 5. He also explains that he doesn’t want to talk about his relationship with Matt’s mom and wants to only celebrate him. Matt says that he doesn’t want to be celebrated, he just wants to get closure and talk about what bothered him. With his father in denial, he finally agrees that he will try to be real with him and apologizes for hurting him. He wants to be better and to ensure that they are both in a healthy place. Matt realizes that because of this conversation, he is not like his father and he knows that one conversation will not make them better, but he feels that efforts will be made.

As Michelle and Matt embark on their date, he lets her know that there are doing a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch spa day! Neither are sure what that means, but they’re happy to do it together. Their spa day begins in an oatmeal soak for their feet. They have a large spa bed that has furs and hay on it where they have butter (that smells like a sugar cookie) along with branches that they can beat on one another. They also enjoy a milk bath in a large copper tub. It’s definitely a rustic space complete with a stuffed bear watching them. They reflect on the date as well as the Hometowns and what falling in love looks like and how you stay in love as dynamics change throughout the relationship. At dinner, Michelle kicks off this portion of the date letting Matt know that he can talk to her about anything. He lets her know that he has been trying to figure out why he is the way he is from not having a relationship, the insecurities and more. He tells her it stems from his parents as he has dealt with mistrust, hurt and more. He explains that he talked with his dad and let him know that he wants to be the man that his father wasn’t. That one exchange has allowed him to be ready and present so that he can continue on his journey. She puts herself out there so that he knows that she wants to be there for him. They take the Fantasy Suite key to continue the night and she tells him that she loves him.

Of course, we see Bri and Rachael and we can tell that Rachael is really starting to be a bit crazed over what’s taking place as Michelle’s date continues into the Fantasy Suite time slot. She hopes (as she leaves her date), that she really will get to be with him. Matt feels that their relationship just works and she has set the bar and will be tough to beat when it comes to his next two dates.

Michelle shares the details of her date and you can see Rachael kind of spiraling and she lets them know that she can see that they are struggling. Bri has a bit of tug of war between being excited to see Matt while being frustrated. She’s also jealous, hurt and excited. Bri leaves to get ready, but the mood seems a bit somber.

Bri’s date involves hiking through the woods with a large bundled pack on their backs. They will be camping in the woods and they reach their campsite and will pitch a tent. Bri doesn’t know that he has never camped. Bre realizes that both of her 1-on-1 dates have been outside and she’s not an outdoor person. They successfully set their tent up and hang out in their awhile. She tells him that seeing Michelle come back from her date, she didn’t realize how hard that would hit her; however, she knows that that means that she really likes him.

They leave the campsite for a proper sit-down dinner. They talk about their date and how it was fun even if she thought that she would have never done that. They talk about her Hometown and how he is excited for her to meet his family. She also wants to know where he is in terms of thinking about being engaged. he lets her know about him and his dad as well as their recent conversation. As they continue to talk, Bri lets him know that she loves him and they use the Fantasy Suite key so that she can have uninterrupted time with him to talk more with him. It’s always great to see that all the dates and suites are different from one another so that the experience is dedicated to each person.

Bri is someone that we liked from the first second that she came out of the limo. Seeing them make breakfast together definitely showed how well they meshed together.

As we get back to the women, once again, Rachael is very down in the mouth and Bri is literally glowing. I like how this season’s group is being tasteful about their date experiences. Rachael has really taken this so hard and it always makes us wonder why one would sign up to this show and not think about the fact that they could be in this situation?

Rachael’s date begins and she looks so dejected and down. Matt is trying to make her happy as they enter the ceramic portion of the date. The teacher lets them know that making something on the wheel is like a relationship and of course, it’s an allegory of how she has been feeling. She’s beating herself up and asks him to talk with her. She tells him that the week had been unbearable for her as she sees him as her future husband and then she knows that he spent intimate time with other people. It made her feel low and she understands that he had to look into all of the relationships so he can be confident on what’s going on. She says that she’s been getting in her head and she doesn’t know how she would feel losing him. One thing that we appreciate about Matt is that he’s always ready for conversations whenever it’s time to have them. He lets her know again that when he’s there with her, he’s there with her. He talks about what happened during the skydiving date and that her accident made him wonder what would he do if she wasn’t there. She’s happy and lets him know she loves him. The two make a piece of pottery together Ghost style.

The date continues as they’re dressed for dinner or drinks. They continue to talk as Matt once again talks about his dad and the conversation that they had. Of course, they use the Fantasy Suite so that she can get to know him more and wake up with him the next day.

The ladies assemble at the rose ceremony. Matt gives a rose to Michelle first and the final rose goes to Rachael. We really wanted to see Bri in the final two especially with all the conversation that has taken place outside of the show.

Each night, we’ll tweet about The Bachelor and you can chat along with us (@AthleisureMag + with our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Director, Kimmie Smith @ShesKimmie) to see what’s taking place!

As Hometowns already took place, we’ll continue to say who we think should take it all.

We also suggest a podcast that we’re newly obsessed with, Wondery’s Bachelor Happy Hour which is hosted by Rachel Lindsay (contestant on The Bachelor Season 21; The Bachelorette Season 13) and co-hosted by Becca Kufrin (contestant on The Bachelor Season 22; The Bachelorette Season 14) to get their feedback!

LAST WEEK

Last week we felt that Abigail, Bri, Jessenia and Rachel are moving forward to Hometowns.

THIS WEEK

Well, this week definitely had a bit of drama sprinkled throughout and for those that have watched the drama unfold outside of what’s going on in the house, it’s interesting to see what future Bachelor/Bachelorette seasons will look like. As that unfolds, here is who will be going into Hometowns. Pretty early on we predicted that Rachel would be in this group.

THE BACHELOR S25. E9. | THE WOMEN'S TELL ALL

March 1, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see tonight’s 9th episode, spoilers are ahead! Tonight is the Women’s Tell All where we see all the women who competed minus those that are still on their journey. Watching this episode which was taped a few weeks ago, makes you think about so many things that have taken place since the episodes have aired. This includes Chris Harrison stepping down for a period of time and with a new host being named for The Bachelor: After The Final Rose show that immediately follows after the finale, author Emmanuel Acho a former linebacker for the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles and an analyst for Fox Sports 1.

Of course, going back to the actual episode, we have to say that this is a very uncomfortable tell-all that seems to leave Chris throwing a question in and allowing the women to take it in a number of directions without him drilling down on the issues. Brittany comes to the hot seat and is able to share how her experience was peppered with the rumors of her being an escort in addition to her being in the second group that was brought into the house. Once again, this stirs up a lot of issues that were left unresolved, additional apologies and continued hurt feelings.

With so many hot button issues going on, we can appreciate how they always add a bit of levity. Seeing the dates that didn’t air was a cool way to see other things that took place that maybe wouldn’t have worked in the episodes. They should share more of these kinds of things just like they do with the bloopers.

Next up in the hot seat (and previously rumored to be the next Bachelorette - which seems to not be happening) is Katie. Katie came into the house with a dildo and later became someone who would not only call people out when they crossed the line, but she would also give Matt a heads up on what was happening while leaving him to find the details out for himself. We thought that she would go the distance, bu that didn’t happen.

Abigail is up next and is another one that we loved watching and hoped that she would get the chance to Hometowns. Although we saw a bit of magic between them, it seems that Matt just couldn’t get there completely. It’s always hard watching the women looking back on their stories and seeing the bittersweet look on their faces and then the moment that they are sent home. What we thought was interesting to hear about Abigail is that although she is Deaf, she represents an interesting section of the community as she was born profoundly deaf and wears a cochlear implant. If she is not wearing it, she is unable to hear. At the same time, because of the implant and because she can read lips, she also doesn’t use sign language. As she states in the tell all, she feels that she is in the grey area and wondered how she would be received. It’s her vulnerabilities and her ability to put herself out there that is why we enjoyed having her there.

Pieper left right before Hometowns and she was someone else that we enjoyed seeing. We thought that her and Matt had clicked; however, we felt our hearts twinge listening to her in the car as she was driven away. Even during the Tell All, you can see that she is still grappling with her emotions.

The much-anticipated interview with Serena P has finally arrived. She admits that she thought at many points that it would be her and Matt; however, she is still sticking by the fact that they weren’t a fit ultimately. We think that when the Tantric Yoga date happened that that started making her think that she wasn’t ready of course along with her family meeting him and their comments to her - combined, it seems to have culminated in the end of their relationship. She’s flooded with emotions watching the end of their relationship as it’s the first time that she had seen the footage. She explains that going into Hometowns, she was feeling great and thought that she would get the assurance that she needed from her family. The lack of getting that affirmation made her really reflect on what was going on and brought clarity that she wasn’t expecting. Chris asks her if she is conflicted because to him, it seems like she is. She explains that she still cares for him and didn’t want to lose him and she didn’t want to hurt him either. She feels that if she stayed, she would have been doing a bigger disservice because she was not 100% there.

Matt James finally joins the show with a beard. It’s interesting to think about the fact that Matt had never been on the show, so he didn’t really have a point of reference to what being The Bachelor would be like. He talks with Victoria on saying that he thinks she’s a good person even if she was involved in drama, he talks with Katie and lets her know that he is appreciative that she was courageous in letting him know what was going on in the house. Chris brings in the levity again and says that he notices that Matt likes to keep his eyes open when he’s kissing. Matt says he didn’t really know that he did that; however, he likes to be able to see them up close. Now seeing himself during the show, he can see why one should keep their eyes closed.

Matt provides closure with Abigail and Pieper. Chris asks Matt what he thinks about Serena P. He shares that it was hard for him, but that he understood if she didn’t want him, he hoped that she would be closer to finding the person that would be. Just in case it got a little heavy, Chris ended with some Bloopers that were probably the best that we have seen across various Bachelor seasons.

Each night, we’ll tweet about The Bachelor and you can chat along with us (@AthleisureMag + with our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Director, Kimmie Smith @ShesKimmie) to see what’s taking place!

Hometowns tooks place last week; however, we’ll continue to say who we think should take it all.

E8. | IT'S HOMETOWNS WEEK

February 22, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see tonight’s 8th episode, spoilers are ahead! We start off tonight’s The Bachelor episode with Chris Harrison talking with the women and letting them know that their families are on site as we are living in extraordinary times. He lets them know who will be there for each contestant. We kick off the show with Matt James working out in prep for this big week. Michelle is up first with her date and family who is from Minnesota. We always like seeing how the dates incorporate their hometowns since they can’t be there. Michelle’s date is a bike ride which is something that her family usually does at night. They continue their date going to her “classroom” where her students are Zoomed in. Seeing Ms. Young’s class and hearing the questions that they have for Mr. James is pretty cute. The cutest part is when he’s asked if they have kissed and he says that they are at the part of just holding hands which is when you know that you really like someone. The questions are pretty tough and it’s nice to see the bond that she has with her students.

Matt meets Michelle’s parents and they catch them up on their journey since Michelle arrived 2 episodes in during a rose ceremony. Michelle chats with her father and he definitely seems like he understands that she is in love with him. When he meets Matt, he tells him that he would be supportive of whatever Michelle wants. Michelle then talks with her mom and lets her know that she has never felt like this before. It’s clear that Michelle had a bad relationship and that her parents rallied around her during that dark time. Seeing him play basketball with her, her mom and dad - was pretty cute. Before Matt heads back to his place, she lets him know that she is falling in love with him, especially after seeing him around her parents.

Next up is Rachael. It’s been tough to watch her interact with Matt as they obviously have great chemistry, but in light of some of the things that have been revealed about her leaves us with so many questions. He hops in her car, she blindfolds him and takes him to a plane where they will go skydiving. Although they have a great time, Rachael crashes into the ground, although she is ok, you can see his concern for her.

We can see that her family feels that there shouldn’t be a rush when it comes to them being together as they feel that this is so soon. Her dad let him know that he felt that it’s strange that they could see that they are ready to take such a big leap. Matt tells her that he had a great chat with her dad, but he didn’t ask for her hand because he didn’t want to do it to “check a box.” If he ends up getting to that point, he lets Rachael know that he will call her father and ask, but there’s no way that he would ask him when there are other women still involved. Although Rachael is bummed about this, we think it’s really the best way to go about something like this.

The next date is with Bri. They enjoy a day of off roading. Matt meets her family which includes her mom, best friend and her baby sister. Although her mom asks the tough questions, Bri hears her mom tell her that she needs to be vulnerable and honest so that he knows where she is at. Bri tells him that she is falling in love with him.

The final Hometown date is with Serena who brings Canada to him by sharing things that he needs to know. She asks him to find where she is from on the map, he learns words and terms that are Canadian and she introduces him to Canadian delicacies. They share poutine, beaver tails, desserts and more. They even play hockey together wearing Canadian jerseys.

Matt and Serena walks through the door and we definitely love seeing her family! They’re all sweet, grounded and have a great sense of humor. Serena’s sister tells her that there is something missing and she thinks that it’s because she is in her own head. When she talks with Matt, she tells him that she is grappling with a lot and he lets her know that that’s ok as he has been there too. She doesn’t tell him anything else and he has now completed all of the Hometown dates. She does know that she’s not there yet and she was hopeful that the dates would have confirmed it.

Next week will be the Women’s Tell All so we’ll get to hear more about everything that happened in the house and even outside of it for the women who are no longer on the journey to Matt’s heart. She goes home and Matt gives roses to the 3 remaining women.

Each night, we’ll tweet about The Bachelor and you can chat along with us (@AthleisureMag + with our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Director, Kimmie Smith @ShesKimmie) to see what’s taking place!

We’ll continue to loop you in on who we think should take it all.

THE BACHELOR S25. E7. | THE FIRING SQUAD UNITES

February 15, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see tonight’s 7th episode, spoilers are ahead! We start off tonight’s The Bachelor episode with the girls meeting Heather. Although Matt is thinking about whether she can come in or not, the contestants let her know that she’s not welcome and that she’s just here for getting on TV. She tries to explain that after hearing so much about him that she was intrigued to meet him. We wonder where this will go because the girls are bullying her which is exactly what Matt James wouldn’t want them to do. He talks with Chris Harrison to let him know that he needs some time to figure it out. The women as a group feel that they need their time with him and are tired of the weekly drama that is happening.

Although he recognizes that Hannah would only pick someone that would be an ideal fit for him, he feels that with Hometowns being a week away, he needs to focus on the women he is already falling in love with. Heather is sad, but she also understands and honestly, it was pretty standup of her to not talk about the actions of the other women who clearly made her feel unwelcome.

Matt goes to the women and lets them know that he only wants to be with the women that are on the couch and apologizes for the interruption and even picks up the conversation with Pieper that was interrupted by Heather.

It’s another rose ceremony, the girls are complimented for how they handled Heather’s interruption (although they didn’t reveal how they really treated her). Ultimately, Bri, Rachel, Serena P (we will now just refer to her Serena going forward), Kit, Jessenia, Abigail, Pieper and Michelle. Matt sends Chelsea and Serena C (Serena P will now be known simply as Serena) home.

There are 2 1-on-1 dates and a group date. Chris delivers the date card (Abigail and Jessenia are the only ones that have yet to have a 1-on-1 date. The date card goes to Serena P for the 1-on-1 date and she’s excited to get time with him - which she has had one already. Matt wants to see where his relationship is with Serena is and their date involves tantric yoga. We get to check out another great area of the Nemacolin property. Serena says that she wouldn’t have picked this date as it’s a lot of sexual positions and she is a bit off-put by it. She admits that she is not an overly sexual person and especially not in public.

As their date continues, the next date card has Pieper, Michelle, Rachel, Bri, Kit and Abigail as the group date. Jessenia will be the 1-on-1 date and she finally gets some time. Back on Serena’s date, they continue to bond over dinner and he encourages him to be honest and tell her what she thinks whether she likes something or doesn’t. Matt gives Serena the rose and she is officially going to Hometowns and is looking forward to her family meeting him.

The group date begins and Matt notes that it’s their last group date and he wants them to bring their best selves and to address everything. He gets time with each woman and it’s Abigail who asks him point blank if he can envision himself with her. She understands that he may not be able to go into detail, but she wants to know. He lets her know that he was attracted to her on the first night which is why she got the first impression rose. He says that in knowing her, he also got to know the other women as well and that he has moved onto others and he doesn’t want to lead her on. She appreciates his honesty, he apologizes and he walks Abigail out! We’re sad that we won’t be able to get to see her, but we could also see that he had cooled off. We can appreciate that she stuck up for herself by asking him for the truth.

He lets the women know that he sent Abigail home and although he didn’t think their conversation would lead to her exit, he wants to focus on those that he thinks will be on the journey. He asks to speak with Rachel. Outside of The Bachelor, avid followers have been aware or have recently followed up on problematic items that have popped into her social media. Whether this plays out this episode or season, has yet to be seen. It’s clear that he still enjoys being around Rachel and that she will definitely continue on into Hometowns.

Kit chats with Matt and lets him know that she wants to finish school, travel, figure out her career path and being able to travel. She lets him know that being married and having children would be something that would be down the road, She could envision having kids at 25/26 and calls herself a, “longterm investment.” Being able to state your truth and what you want is essential and Matt was onboard.

The rose from the group date goes to Rachel. In addition to getting it, he also has something planned for her - a serenade and dance moment with Aloe Blacc. Kit looks so upset as she felt that they had definitely connected. She’s not sure how much longer she can continue with the highs and lows of trying to be on the journey with Matt. Matt seems pretty happy as he’s thinking about everything that has gone on. Kit shows up at his place and lets him know that she has let his guard down for him and that she thought that she had clarity in her decision. Since she doesn’t have that clarity, she lets him know that it’s not her. He tells her that he wants her there; however, she feels that he deserves more and that she is unwavering in her decision. Kit has fallen in love with him, but she has seeds of doubt.

As the girls grapple with Abigail being sent home and Kit deciding to leave, Jessenia’s 1-on-1 date takes place where they learn drifting by a pro who knows a thing or two about this! We’ve always loved the idea of Jessenia and Matt together and hope she gets a chance of Hometowns with him. Jessenia lays her feelings on the table; however, Matt feels that they are not on the same page. As he picks up the rose, he tells her that there needs to be tangible love that goes to an engagement and tells her that he is not there. Because he knows she deserves unwavering love and respect, he can’t give her the rose. Although she feels blindsided, the grace that she has in accepting what happened really shows the kind of person that she is.

There are only 2 roses left. Pieper, Michelle (the only remaining contestant from the second set of women that arrives) and Bri are looking for a rose and Rachel and Serena have theirs. Hometowns is literally taking place next week and everyone wonders what he’s thinking. Who are the 2 women that will get to continue the journey?

Matt says Bri, who we have liked from the very beginning. This leaves Michell and Pieper for the final rose. Ultimately, he gives Michelle the rose! Pieper is going home. Although Pieper hugs the other women to say her goodbyes, she doesn’t even walk forward to Matt. He asks if she can walk her out and she doesn’t even talk to him. The 4 women going to Hometowns include Serena, Bri, Michelle and Rachel. The women are so excited and we’re looking forward to hear what the family’s think.

Each night, we’ll tweet about The Bachelor and you can chat along with us (@AthleisureMag + with our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Director, Kimmie Smith @ShesKimmie) to see what’s taking place!

Each week we will let you know who our faves were last episode and if we’ve changed up since then as it pertains to who we think should go to Hometowns if we were choosing right now! We will also say who we think should take it all.

E6. | WHO'S REAL

February 8, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see tonight’s 6th episode, spoilers are ahead! We start off tonight’s The Bachelor episode with MJ and Jessenia doing a 2-on-1 with Matt to see about who is toxic and who isn’t. Matt James tries to figure out what took place between the girls. Jessenia shares that the persona that MJ does with Matt is not who she is and that she has been one of the people who was involved in the mean girl clique. MJ explains that she has gone through a lot in her life and doesn’t like that she is being defamed as she would never do that to someone. He likes both of the women and acknowledges that he has formed relationships with both of them, but knows he can’t continue the journey with both of them there. Although he is conflicted, he gives the rose to Jessenia and walks MJ out. MJ feels that she was sabotaged and wants nothing but the best for him.

Immediately after, it’s time for him to focus on the rest of the ladies. The ladies walk in and see the rose tray is empty and speculate on who will be coming back. The girls are ready to get on with the night and to spend some time with him so that they can get to know him and to get past the theatrics. They all talk about getting to have some time with Matt and how they will get to be reconnected. Chris Harrison walks in and lets them know that there will not be a cocktail party and they will go straight to the ceremony as he is exhausted and knows what he wants. Going into the ceremony, Jessenia, Rachael, Abigail and Kit already have roses - so 3 are going home. Serena P, Michelle, Pieper, Bri, Chelsea, Katie and Serena C receive roses. Magi, Brittany and Ryan do not receive roses.

We’re back at Nemacolin and Pieper gets the 1-on-1 evening date. Serena C pulls Katie to the side and lets her know that her antics take time away from her each time she wants to talk with Matt. Serena C feels that Katire is telling Matt everything that takes place in the house and lets her know that she actually allows the girls to speak for themselves and to tell their stories. She merely lets him know that there is general unrest going on and that he should find out more information. As the girls have their spat deciding who is here for Matt. Heather from Colton’s season decided to pop by and said that a friend told her that she should meet him. Chris lets her know that they are in quarantine so she just can’t just come in! He has to speak with other people on this and there are a lot of protocols involved.

Matt picks her up and drives her into the woods and gives her a flashlight as it is very dark outside. They walk through the dark and after flipping a switch, there is an entire carnival set up for them to enjoy! There are a number of rides, lights and more - which is such a fun date for them to enjoy.

While Pieper is on her evening date, Bri, Kit, Rachael, Michelle, Jessenia, Serena P, Abigail, Chelsea and Serena C are on the next group date. That means Katie will have the 1-on-1 date. Meanwhile, Heather from a previous season (she is friends with Hannah B) has begun the quarantine process and is on her way to seeing if she can be included as a potential woman to be involved in Matt’s journey. Clearly, the surprises never stop! Back at Pieper’s date, she lets Matt know that she is following in love with him - she does receive the rose. After a date with a carnival and a dinner, they get a performance by Temecula Road.

The group date begins and it’s a bowling date. After a few minutes, Chris lets that know that they will be divided into 2 teams. Whoever wins, gets the afterparty and the winner will get to go to the afterparty. From the pink team, Chelsea, Jessenia, Michelle and Bri get to have more time with Matt. Kit, Chelsea, Abigail, Serena C and Rachael are walking back home in the rain. The Blue Team is bummed because they don’t even get the rose that is up for grabs for that portion of the date. While the girls enjoy their time, the Blue team gets a special date card where they are told that they will get time as well. Apparently, they were invited back into the afterparty on the same night! Of course, it causes some of the girls to get annoyed as they thought that they would have an opportunity to have a 1-on-1 time. Chelsea definitely has an issue with more people being there and not being able to get the time. Michelle receives the rose from the group date.

Before his 1-on-1 date with Katie, Matt catches up with his best friend, Tyler which we all know from Hannah’s season on The Bachelorette. They are best friends, live together and they also run their food business together. Katie and Matt are going to enjoy a spa date with one another. They will be in the ear of the masseuse that will be massaging Tyler. It seems like this date will be more of a prank date. Thankfully, Tyler was good-natured about it and got to meet Katie (we hope he got to enjoy a real massage afterward). At dinner, the two connect and not so surprisingly, he tells Katie that he can’t give her the rose as his relationships with the other women have moved along faster. Although it’s not a shock, Katie was a huge reason for a lot of Matt’s awareness of what was going on in the house. Katie kept it classy wishing him good luck and letting him know that there were good women in the house. The women see her suitcase being wheeled out from the hotel lobby.

The girls assemble for the cocktail party and they look forward to being able to have 1-on-1 time. They recognize that there have been antics and distractions, but this will be the first night where it will be a regular night. Matt greets them and the cocktail party begins with him pulling Abigail aside to catch up with her. Heather is on her way to the resort. Heather walks in past the girls, waves and right into the conversation that he is having with Pieper.

LAST WEEK

Even with all of the twists and turns, we selected Abigail, Bri, Rachael and Brittany to be the ones that we could see at hometowns.

THIS WEEK

Well, this week had more twists that were expected and unexpected. We’re shaking it up this week as Brittany was not given a rose and we see some great synergies between Matt and some of the ladies. We see Hometown dates including:

THE BACHELOR S25. E5. | THE OG'S VS THE NEW GIRLS

February 1, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see tonight’s 5th episode, spoilers are ahead! We start off tonight’s The Bachelor episode with the toxic OG versus New Girl dynamic. Matt James addresses what Katie brought up to him and he said that the “US vs THEM” mentality is a culture of bullying and rumors that had been going around that could hurt others. He explained that a person who has to push someone down, to lift someone up - that’s not the kind of person that he would want. Of course, he pulls Brittany to the side BUT now the girls want to know who said it. Brittany shares what’s been going on and that she was called an escort. MJ suggests to Anna that she should talk to Matt and let him know what she did.

Anna talks with Matt and lets him know that she heard rumors about Brittany and when she met her, she felt the need to share it with her. She says how bad she feels and that she feels like she is breaking out into rashes over this. He explains that he has to be true to himself and that he can’t imagine Anna being on the journey to find love with him. He swiftly lets her go and walks her out as she cries and apologizes.

The remainder of the women at Nemacolin watch in surprise as she leaves. The fact that the women that were initially there claimed that they were oblivious to the behavior in the house. Victoria tries to go on a campaign to make herself look better and even other girls apologize - no one believes this and it seems like it’s a night of cleaning house. Ryan tells Matt that Victoria told her that because she was a dancer, she thought that she was a whore and laughed about it.

Ryan tells Victoria was she said and Victoria goes over to Matt to try to commend him for what he said and to also try to make herself seem innocent. He asks her what part of being a ho could be taken the wrong way. Of course, he stops the cocktail session to go straight to the rose ceremony. Victoria also figures out that Katie is the one that looped him into what was happening. She is heard bad-mouthing the girls in the house to the producers.

The roses given at the ceremony are given to Brittany, Ryan, Rachael, Serena P, Magi, Kit, MJ, Jessenia, Katie, Abigail, Chelsea, and Serena C. Matt sends Victoria, Catalina, Lauren and +1 home.

Chris comes to the ladies and he says that things are changing as they are past the half way point. He gives them the 1-on-1 card which is with Rachael. Rachael meets Matt and learns that she will be spoiled. They see celebrity stylist Ty Hunter and she sees a number of gowns, shoes, champagne and more. She tries on a number of looks in front of Matt. She is also given a pair of Christian Louboutin heels and it’s so cute to see her reaction and to see how genuine she is to have time with him. Rachael comes in to see the girls and has a number of bags, wearing her dress and is gifted another dress that she is going to wear to dinner. She leaves the girls as they think about the time that they are not getting with them.

The next date card arrives for: Serena P, Bri, Katie, Pieper, Serena C, Ryan, Michelle, Brittany, Magi, Abigail, Chelsea, Jessenia and MJ.Kit receives the 1-on-1.

Back at the second part of Rachael’s date, she receives the rose and we can definitely see how they complement one another.

At the group date, they hit the farm and do a number of chores, He lets them know that although he lives in NYC, he is from Raleigh, NC and he grew up on a farm. Although MJ takes the lead to agree to do a number of the activities, some question whether it is authentic. Pieper takes a moment to get a few kisses from him and then other girls “just realize” that they are all dating the same guy. Matt does try to spend time with each of them, but it’s hard when the other girls see that he has connections with others. The second part of the group date brings the girls together with him.

After toasting the girls, he asks to have some time with Chelsea and pulls her first. He then talks with Abigail who says that being on the farm date allows her to understand her grandparents farm that she has never been too. She shares that if she were able to have children, there is a possibility that her children could be hearing impaired. Her birth father left her after she got cochlear implants and she voices her concern about whether others would be like that to her. Matt is really good about being able to empathize with others whether it’s a shared experience or not. He then reaches out to MJ to find out her role in the bullying. Of course she says that she brings the house together and doesn’t do that. Brittany comes in to take a moment with Matt. When MJ comes back to the girls, she lets them know that she was called an antagonist in the house. She asks if anyone wants to talk about it since she leads “by example.” Jessenia lets her know that she mentioned MJ because she stated that there was a Varisty and JV squad. Jessenia explains that MJ made the house uncomfortable for the girls. Katie hops in and supports Jessenia and agrees that MJ is deflecting.

Rachael and Kit hang out at home as Rachael sends positive vibes to her for the 1-on-1 date which will be at his place. Kit shares that her happy place is in the kitchen with her mom and that she loves to cook. She’s hopeful that that will be part of their date. Matt gives a rose to Abigail. MJ decides that she is going to clear up her character as she’s there to be with Matt and not the girls.

Kit’s date is pretty cute and chill. Matt likes to have his dessert first and they make cookies together. As much as Kit has grown up with a luxurious lifestyle as the daughter to Cynthia Rowley, she also has such a relaxed sense of being which is welcoming. She receives the rose.

As the girls talk about the upcoming rose ceremony, a card arrives say that Matt needs to know the truth from Jessenia and MJ. He asks them to arrive prior to the ceremony so that he can find out what happened. We see the women bring their luggage to the lobby.

At the end of tonight’s episode, Abigail, Rachael and Mari go into the rose ceremony with roses. We’ll definitely see how tonight’s episode will play out tomorrow between the showdown of MJ and Jessenia and then go straight into the rose ceremony.

LAST WEEK

We learned a lot more about Matt James and the women that would be competing on the show. We thought that Hometowns would be given to Abigail, Bri, Jessenia and Brittany.

THIS WEEK

Well, this week had quite a few twists and we’re glad that the most toxic girls have been removed and hope that makes the other girls stop all the mean girl antics - Abigail, Bri, Rachael and Brittany.

THE BACHELOR S25. E4. | WHAT NEXT

January 25, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see tonight’s 4th episode, spoilers are ahead! We start off tonight’s The Bachelor episode with the women debriefing about Sarah leaving the show as they lounge at Nemacolin. The conversation is fine until Victoria begins bashing Sarah. Katie lets her know that since she is not there, there’s no need to continue to talk about her. Victoria says that she will say what she wants, when she wants. Clearly, Katie is next on her list for her to eliminate as she had the same plans for Marylynn and Sarah. The two talk separately and the tension between them continues. Matt James continues with his second group date and looks to connect with the women. The women ask how he is doing and he assures them that he is there to continue his journey. Ultimately, Chelsea has a heart to heart with him by telling him about her hair journey and how it is so important for women and personal to them. He explains that although he has never felt that way, he can sympathize with her on those feelings. She receives the rose.

We continue onto the cocktail party as Anna and Victoria plan on how they will grab him first so that they can talk. He actually talks with a number of the women and although Pieper gets to chat first! By the time Victoria sits with him, Chris Harrison walks in and lets him know that he needs to see him. The girls see him walk to the front and they assume that Sarah is coming back as they see a car pull up.

Brittany emerges from the car and is followed by 4 additional cars (including: Kim, Catalina, Michelle and Ryan - these women were teased initially as being on the show, so it’s interesting that they held them back to come in tonight). Each car has women in them and they are now being added to the house! This causes quite a stir understandably. With all of these women under the same roof, this is going to be a crazy situation for everyone. Matt comes in and lets the original group know that he didn’t know about this twist and that he just wants to be able to learn more about the women. The rose ceremony takes place after the cocktail party. Of the new girls, Kim is the only one that does not receive a rose. From the OG cast, Khaylah and Kalia do not receive one. Rachel, MJ. Serena P, Chelsea, Pieper, Bri, Magi, Michelle, Mari, Ryan, Kit, Serena C, Abigail, Katie, Victoria, Lauren, Brittany, Jessenia, Anna and Catalina continue on in the process.

The first date card is brought in by Chris. Mari, Bri, Abigail, Brittany, Ryan, Catalina, Magi, Anna and Victoria are all on the group date. Matt is in need of a pep talk and Ben Higgins (former Bachelor) comes by to point him in the right direction and has planned the date! Matt has created a fall race that has a number of activities like a field day as they race to Matt. The winner will get a prize and this is definitely an individual activity. Racing in a thousand-pound pumpkin as a canoe is pretty interesting. Mari wins the race and even Victoria acknowledges that she’s glad that an OG won. Victoria has visions of grandeur of being the “queen” of the group - even though a Miss Universe of Puerto Rico is now a fellow competitor!

Brittany and Anna come from Chicago and apparently, Brittany is suspected to be an escort. Anna lets Victoria this info and it adds fuel to the fire because they saw her deeply kissing him when she first met him. So the claws are out for sure. The group date rose goes to Bri - although he does shout out Brittany and Anna for loving the conversation that he had with them. Anna brings up that Brittany’s intentions are pure and lets her know that when she arrived, her friends let her know that she received warnings about her. She says that in front of everyone on the group date. Brittany says that

The next date card arrives and Michelle gets the one on one date. On their date, planned by Chris, he is having them take some leaps of faith and a scavenger hunt. Matt states that he felt something and that’s why he wanted to have her on this date to know more about her. Their day date includes a hot air balloon which is always a nice touch. At their dinner, they have a heart to heart talking about her being a teacher, how she talked about George Floyd to her students and more. She receives a rose as well.

The next group date card arrives and the claws continue to be out. Brittany tells Katie that there is a rumor being said about her that she was an escort. Katie is over the bullying and we think that she will step in for sure. The next group date starts and it seems like it will be a physical one. Mia St John is on the date and wants to know if they are ready to fight for Matt in front of a live audience. The live audience is the other half of the house. Why the show always thinks that these kinds of physical dates are a good idea is beyond us! The women are a bit battered and bruised and Matt calls it to have everyone go straight to the second part of the group date.

On this portion of the date which only has members of the original women on this date, they spend time making fun of the new ones. Again, Katie tries to reason with them and they’re not having it. She pops out to Matt and lets him know that there are a lot of inappropriate comments being said about the new women to the point of having damaging statements being made about them. She apologizes for telling him; however, he is glad that she let him know about what is going on. He let her know that he has no tolerance for that behavior.

LAST WEEK

We learned a lot more about Matt James and the women that would be competing on the show. We thought that Hometowns would be given to Abigail, Bri, Jessenia and Khaylah.

THIS WEEK

Well, this week had quite a few twists! This is the first week that we have a new pick due to Khaylah not getting a rose this week. We’re including one of the new girls in the mix as there could be chemistry there. We’re going to stick with - Abigail, Bri, Jessenia and Brittany.

THE BACHELOR S25. E3. | THE PLOT THICKENS

January 18, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see tonight’s 3rd episode, spoilers are ahead! We start off tonight’s episode with the rose ceremony which was a cliffhanger from last week of The Bachelor. We catch up with the ladies at Nemacolin, who learn who will continue to advance. Although we’re bummed, Marylynn is eliminated and Victoria is given the rose. Interestingly enough, she explains that she has Sarah as her next target. Matt also eliminates Sydney, Kristen, Lauren and Alana.

The first group date includes the women writing their love letters to him. Much like what happened in The Bachelorette last season, the other portion of the women in the house were also invited to the date to hear it. On this date is Anna,Bri, Katie, Rachael, Sarah, Kit, Khaylah, Victoria, MJ and Serena C. They see Ashley Iaconetti introducing them to the next date. She reads portions of Chris Harrison’s book. The girls work on what they will share and Matt James also shares his as well. Everyone enjoys the stories and the women who were not on the participating portion of the date are sent back home. The other girls are able to go to the cocktail portion of the date.

The next date will be with Serena P. as a 1-on-1 date. We’ve noticed that Sarah has definitely struggled with the fact that she is dating Matt with multiple people. We saw her faint even though she already had a rose, when the next date card came, she didn’t even hang out with everyone else. And while Katie is chatting with Matt, she interrupts them! Although she allows them to finish Katie lets her know later that she needs to figure out her situation because it wasn’t appropriate for it to happen. Rachael gets the group rose.

Serena P’s up next with her date. Sarah has yet to make her presence her known to the group, but Matt James swings by and wants to talk to her. It seems like they’re talking about the same things that they talked about the night before and he encourages her to stay the course.

FINALLY Matt is ready to hang out with Serena P. They have a horse back riding date and then a charcuterie date outside. In addition to donkeys hanging out with them, they talk about their families and how they came to being on this journey. It really was a great way for them to get to know one another on a deeper level. They have a nice dinner and she gets the rose. They end her night with champagne in the hot tub by the fire.

Sarah has yet to see the women and an entire day and night has gone by. The women want her to face the mess that she has made. The final date card arrives and Sarah just materializes before its read. MJ tells her that she was “worried” about her as she had not been down to see them all day and that it was rude to not come down. Sarah explains that she is having a hard time grapsing everything and that she considered leaving. They all ask why she is having such an issue when she has had a 1-on-1 date. The girls hold her feet to the fire and let her know that she is selfish, calculating and manipulative. We also know that Victoria is definitely not a fan and Kit lets her know that she hopes that her relationship is strong with Matt because her time in the house will be uncomfortable due to her antics. Sarah tries to connect with MJ; however that doesn’t work. Once again, we see her in her room.

The next morning, Sarah is still staying away from the group. Katie swings by and says that she didn’t like what happened last night. Sarah claims that she is going to leave and it’s because of a combination of a few things. Katie tells her that if she feels she has a connection, then she needs to stay because she doesn’t want to be his backup plan. Sarah admits that she is not in a good headspace because of her own insecurities, but also because of her father only having weeks to live. Katie says that her father passed in 2012 and that if she had the ability to see him, she would and she understands her decision in knowing the full story. She tells the camera that he deserves the best and that she isn’t operating at her best right now.

She packs her bags and makes her way to talk to Matt. Now, earlier in this episode, he said he would come to her every day if he had to if she needed reassurance. We’ll see how it goes. Katie lets the group know that Sarah is going home and she tells the group that they need to keep it classy as they don’t know all of one another’s stories. Sarah arrives at Matt’s door and tells him that she feels alone there, has been attacked by the women in the house and missing her family. Matt says that he understands that that environment must be tough and that he wants her to stay. She explains that she has prayed about this and she feels called that she needs to go home to her family and that she is not ready for this. He lets her know that he won’t stop thinking about her, praying for her family and her dad. He lets her know that when she is ready, there will be a great guy for her even though it’s not him.

THE BACHELOR S25. E2. | MATT JAMES' JOURNEY

January 11, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see tonight’s 2nd episode, spoilers are ahead! We started off tonight’s episode with Day 1 of The Bachelor by seeing the ladies checking out Nemacolin, their home for the next few weeks. Chris Harrison lets them know that there will be 2 1-on-1 dates and 1 group date for the week. He also says that not everyone will get dates. Bri gets the first 1-on-1 date (we think she will get to Hometowns and we love how she’s killing it working in communications at a major tech company).

The remaining girls remind one another that they need to be mindful of their time with Matt James; however, Victoria voices her frustration in not getting the date and having to be left behind. The ladies realize that she definitely has a bad attitude.

The group date is announced and will have Chelsea, Serena P, Abigail, Syndey, Illeana, Kristen, Lauren, Jessenia, Serena C, Kit, Kaylah, Katie, MJ, Mari, Pieper, Rachael and Victoria. Victoria tells the girls not to be negative tomorrow - although she is the one that has been doing that!

Bri gets the date and the girls hear the fireworks which means that they know that she received one as well. We move onto the group date which is the bridal shoot with 18 girls! Our favorite Franco Lacosta who has also been a friend of the magazine and our Style Director for years, is on hand! A number of the shoots are great and Victoria is as obnoxious as we have come to expect. Chris walks in on the date halfway through and lets them know that his date is about to take a turn! With some of the girls not having their picture taken yet, they wonder what this means!

The ladies are divided into 2 teams and will literally fight for his heart. There is paint flying, girls have cut their dresses up, they’re falling on the ground and Franco runs out to take pictures in the midst of the madness. The red team wins and the yellow team walks home in their soiled dresses. The red team will get to have some time with him (Victoria was on this team) - it will be interesting to see how that portion of the date goes. With a rose on the line within this date and getting time in front of him, the girls can feel that they have to step their game up.

As the group date continues, the 1-on-1 date card comes in and Sarah’s name is on it.

Back at the group date, Victoria takes her shot with Victoria and tries to prove that she is a well-rounded person by sharing her insecurities from how she looks. It seems like Victoria is saying what Matt wants to hear and she made sure to ask him for a date. She thought that she was getting the rose but, Lauren gets it. Victoria asks Lauren if she expected to get the rose and then says that she was vulnerable and shared things about herself (as if no one else did as well) and can’t believe that it wasn’t enough to get it.

The final date for this week is with Sarah which includes an airplane where they fly over the property to see everything at another vantage point. Sarah wants to dig into deeper topics. Matt asks about her father and you can tell that there is more there then what she said. He decides to continue into the dinner portion of the date. He wants her to open up more as he knows that other women that he has been around have been more open with him. Sarah finally shares that her father was diagnosed with ALS when she was in college. She knew that there was no cure for it and he has extended his life expectancy; however, there have been a number of changes that he has gone through. She shares that she quit her job in TV so that she could be his caregiver. Matt appreciates her honesty and the fact that she shared. He lets her know that he will pray for her and her family. Matt gives Sarah the rose.

The second rose ceremony seems like there will definitely be drama as Victoria seems to have her eyes on Marylynn. Abigail reaches out to Matt to have some time to chat with him as she was on the group date, but, they didn’t have a chance to chat. They come up with a secret code so that they can communicate even when they are unable to have a talk 1-on-1. Marylynn and Matt have a great time to connect as he gives her orchids because he remembered it from their first conversation. What a great way to show his connection with her. Victoria sees this and feels that Marylynn is toxic and so she goes off to find Matt because now she is an “empath.” Victoria tells him that she had to sleep on the couch (even though she chose this) and she says that Marylynn is the problem. Matt says that he wants to get to the bottom of it and he walks away thinking that Marylynn is a bully in this situation. Victoria tells the ladies that she thinks that Marylynn is toxic and the girls say that they have never heard that about her.

The first half of the rose ceremony has Matt giving roses to Pieper, Kit, Maggie, Rachael, Abigail, Jessenia, Katie and Serena C. When Sarah passes out, we’re left with a cliffhanger!

LAST WEEK

It was a great episode where we got to learn a lot more about Matt James and the women that would be competing on the show. We thought that Hometowns would be given to Abigail, Bri, Jessenia and Khaylah.

THE BACHELOR S25. E1. | MEET MATT JAMES + THE LADIES

January 4, 2021
Matt James.jpg

If you have yet to see season premiere of tonight’s episode 1, spoilers are ahead! We enjoyed ABC’s The Bachelorette and thankfully, didn’t have to wait too long before seeing The Bachelor which will have its first Black Bachelor, Matt James. The 25th season of The Bachelor is taking place at Nemacolin which is a stunning resort in Pennsylvania. Many of us know him through being best friends with Tyler Cameron from Hannah’s season. In addition, they co-founded a philanthropic platform, ABC Food Tours. Matt also works for CBRE as a researcher here in NYC.

Prior to meeting the girls, it was great to hear Matt talking through the weight of his decisions with Chris Harrison as he talked about being the product of an interracial marriage and how he doesn’t want to disappoint people in whether he will date someone that is white or someone that is black. Talking about race on this platform and having people of color in key positions as The Bachelor and the Bachelorette is just a great way to represent the array of people that we come across every day whether in person or online.

There are some amazing women in this group of contestants where you can see their personalities jumping off the page. Carolyn shares some lavender with him, Kaylah’s entrance with the pickup truck and who can forget Kaili walking with a styling rack of dress options while she rocks lingerie, a silk robe and abs in heels.

After meeting all of the women outside, he’s finally ready to see them all together. Having the prayer to kick everything off was a great touch and it lets them know more about him as well. He also talks about the importance of being mutually vulnerable and being biracial. Matt talks with a number of the women, but of course, Victoria does a double-dip by talking to him twice.

The first impression rose goes to Abigail. A number of the women have yet to have the chance to talk with him but it’s time for the first elimination of the rose ceremony.

On night one, Matt eliminated Alicia, Amber, Carolyn, Casandra, Corrinne, Emani, Kimberly and Saneh.

Each night, we’ll tweet about The Bachelor and you can chat along with us (@AthleisureMag + with our Co-Founder/Creative + Style Director, Kimmie Smith @ShesKimmie) to see what’s taking place!

Each week we will let you know who our faves were last episode and if we’ve changed up since then as it pertains to who we think should go to Hometowns.

WEEK 1

We’re not going to lie, The Bachelor casting crew found some amazing women that are beautiful, accomplished, passionate and you can see great fits. We think that these 4 women could very well be introducing their families to Matt at Hometowns - Abigail, Bri, Jessenia and Khaylah.
