S1. E8. | ATHLEISURE KITCHEN WITH STARCHEF'S WILL BLUNT

We attended the 14th Annual StarChefs International Chefs Congress a couple of weeks ago in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This 3-day event focused on chefs and restaurateurs that we enjoy eating in their restaurants or seeing them on an array of TV programs, to supporting chefs rising in their field and some top appliance, cooking and food producers in the market. Throughout the event, we were able to enjoy a number of sessions that included pairing wines with the iconic Dinosaur BBQ, a Fried Rice Smackdown which was judged by Chef Marcus Samuelsson, Chef Edward Lee, Chef Nicole Ponesca and Christine Lee with participants that included BRAVO's Top Chef - Chef Sheldon Simeon, a discussion on West African food and educating listeners on its flavors and importance via Kith and Kin's Chef Kwame Onwuachi and a number of hands-on culinary classes as well as being able to walk the floor to try a number of treats by brands in the space. 

On today's Athleisure Kitchen, we sit down with Will Blunt, Managing Editor of StarChefs in one of the breakout rooms on the floor of the event to talk about how he came to being a part of the publication StarChefs as well as the annual event, the purpose behind StarChefs, speakers and participants he looked forward to especially seeing at the event and more. The last HBO podcast we enjoyed listening to was Chernobyl and for avid viewers of WATCHMEN, HBO has brought back the companion podcast which brings back the host, Craig Mazin. This show also has insights by Co-Creator, Writer and Executive Producer, Damon Lindelof. Together, they share and provide behind the scenes information on the 9 episodes of this season. New shows drop after the 3rd, 6th and 9th episodes.

Each episode talks about what we're watching, how things are unfolding, ties back into elements from WATCHMEN the movie as well as thoughts about why the characters interact with one another the way that they do. It also presents information on Damon's approach to how he works on programs from LOST to the importance of him taking on a number of issues and where he found the inspiration to do so.

Season 2 of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is back for more episodes of espionage and saving the world. We head into season 2 where he's tracking a possible shipment of illegal arms in the Venezuelan jungle. We reconnect with CIA Officer Jack Ryan to South America where he investigates what took place. His interest threatens to uncover an expansive conspiracy which brings him and additional operatives on a mission across the globe.

THE IRISHMAN

If you didn't head to the theaters when The Irishman came out, on Nov 27th, this movie comes to Netflix and takes us through the memoirs of Frank Sheeran, a truck driver became a hitman who gets involved with mobster Russell Bufalino. Martin Scorsese's film shares Frank's story that involves secrets he kept as a loyal member of the Bufalino crime family which included his time working with Teamster Jimmy Hoffa.

In addition, a number of noted actors from Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci (who came out of unofficial retirement to be in this film), Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale and more.

This true crime podcast hails from the largest newsroom in the southeast for hard hitting investigative reporting. We started bingeing this podcast during NYFW to catch up on the previous 6 seasons in order to get ready for the current season! This season, Bill Rankin and Christian Boone takes us through the examination of a deadly police shooting of Afghanistan war veteran Anthony Hill. We learn that he was naked and unarmed when he was gunned down in March 2015. Anthony struggled with bipolar disorder and was offered medication. Office Chip Olsen was not aware of the 26 year old's issues when he responded to a 911 call about a nude man found in his metro Atlanta apartment complex in the middle of the afternoon. The term breakdown refers to the breakdown of the story and the systems.

This movie which is available on Netflix Originals as well as played at a number of movie theaters reimagines Shakespeare's Henriad plays (this spans his plays: Richard II to Henry IV, Parts 1 and II, and Henry V). We are introduced to young Prince Hal from days spent drinking and gambling to his ascent to the throne of the King of England. From this throne, he has to navigate politics, betrayal, war and results of the chaos that his father created. We get a bird's eye view of what takes place inside and outside of his castle walls.

We have been a fan of Wondery's Business Wars, hosted by David D. Brown who shares the history and battle between businesses through serial episodes to dig into what made them great and in some cases who was unable to continue to compete.

With the success of this show, they recently dropped Sports Wars which is hosted by SB Nation's regular contributor, Dan Rubenstein. This looks at the rivalries that exist in sports and not just those by opposing teams! In its inaugural season that dropped this month, they started with the rivalry between Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre - quaterbacks on the Green Bay Packers. They highlight where this rivalry began, the backstory of both players as well as what was taking place as this feeling of contention continued to grow.

YOU VS WILD

Growing up, the Athleisure Mag team enjoyed reading Choose Your Own Adventure books which allowed you to select an array of choices that led you through a journey that was either successful, perilous or somewhere in between. The beauty of it is that you could continue to read this and have a number of endings that had various levels of satisfaction.

This concept has been brought into a new interactive show with Netflix and Bear Grylls . We know Bear as an outdoorsman that is military trained who goes into a number of situations in the wild whether solo or with such celebs and personalities as former president Barack Obama, Ben Stiller and Vanessa Hudgens just to name a few.

In this new series, a series of episodes focus on a mission from getting medical supplies to a remote village, sustaining yourself in a survival mission and more. As Bear goes along his journey he gives you a choice between two different situations and outlines the pros and cons of each. You select what happens and go along for the ride. You can always go back to change the ending or see all possible outcomes.

Season 5 of Bosch starts April 19th and this season he puts himself in the mix in order to uncover crimes of abuse and manipulation. With his need to bring those to justice, he also has to balance his purpose of his work with the fact that he is the sole surviving parent to his daughter Maddie.

As always, there are multiple story lines each season that take place as he continues to bring a bit of law and order in LA! If you have yet to catch up, you can binge the previous seasons in prep for the upcoming dynamic season.

Earlier this month, we attended the launch of Season 3 of The Burger Show, sponsored by no-contract wireless service provider, SIMPLE Mobile. This season launched on March 5th on First We Feast’s YouTube channel with 6 episodes, highlighting the history of burgers through the celebration of innovation within the industry.

To kick off its season, Chef Alvin Cailin of EggSlut and NYC's The Usual located at the Nolitan Hotel - unveiled his latest cheeseburger "The Transformer" (a mixture of a Oklahoma fried onion burger and a Tennessee deep-fried patty, blanketed by Connecticut-style crispy cheese) to foodies while enjoying the premier episode with Tony Hawk which was projected on a massive screen outside of the restaurant across the street. Chef Cailin loves that he can translate his love for burgers into this series. Unlike the first two seasons, viewers will enjoy seeing burger culture across the US, whether Chef Cailin is remaking iconic burgers from Shake Shack or In-N-Out or he is making creations with a number of his celeb friends and tastemakers. It's worth noting that fans won't have to wait too long for Season 4 as this will debut later on this year with new burgers to explore and to create!
