LIFE'S PASSION | CURTISS COOK

When you're watching a film or a series, the goal is to be transported and to enjoy an immersive experience that either allows for escapism, conversations with others, or to be introspective. That process can come in many forms whether it's the script, the setting, subject, and in many cases the actor.

There are a number of actors that you know when they are attached to what you're about to watch, your expectations are high that they are going to drive the story. When you have an actor who has played a number of characters in shows and films that you admire, you're always excited to get the chance to know more about them, their process, and how they connect to their work. This month's cover of Athleisure Mag is Curtiss Cook (Mayans FC, Shutter Island, West Side Story) who has played Otis "Douda" Perry in The Chi which you can stream the current Season 6B on Paramount+ with Showtime and On Demand and you can also watch it on Showtime each Sunday.

We wanted to know more about the power of storytelling through the characters that he plays and how that is achieved; what he loves about storytelling, the committment he has to his craft; the success of his role in The Chi; the importance of mental health; and upcoming projects that we can continue to keep an eye out for. In addition, we took advantage of a summer day by heading to Selina Chelsea Hotel for our photoshoot that took place at Creatures at Selina Rooftop and Music For A While listening lounge!

ATHLEISURE MAG: The last time we talked, you were our cover for our DEC ISSUE #72 back in 2021.

CURTISS COOK: Oh wow, Dec ‘21!

AM: We were talking about Season 4 of The Chi, and you guys knew you were already renewed for Season 5, and we were talking about The Devil You Know although you couldn’t tell us about the title at that time or really what it was. But you shared that you were working with Charles Murray (Sons of Anarchy, The Devil You Know, Outer Range), which interestingly enough, he is in this month’s issue!

CC: Are you serious? Oh, I love him!

AM: Yes, we interviewed him for Outer Range.

CC: Outer Range?

AM: Yes it’s a neo-western with Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, Avengers franchise, Dune franchise) on Prime Video. Charles is the Executive Producer and Showrunner of the 2nd season as he took over from the creator for this series. Which is a great show by the way!

CC: Josh Brolin you said?

AM: Yes!

CC: Oh c’mon, you know that’s good!

AM: Oh it’s a great show!

So now, we can go back and talk about The Devil You Know, which we loved!

We thought it was awesome to see the dynamic and the storyline.

CC: It was good right?

AM: Oh, I mean the cast! What was it that you loved about being in that show?

CC: First of all, when I was offered it, the first thing that popped into my mind was that I was trying to remember a movie or television show that dealt with brothers, Black brothers and in a complicated way right? Not just as caricatures of the culture, you know what I mean? They had a mother and a father, so they grew up with both of their parents, you know what I mean? It wasn't a broken home. Now what happens in the movie – we have to sell a movie. But still, the love in which they still cared for each other was amazing, the writing for that script was so on point. But then like you said, when you get a group of cast members like that, it’s like, “wow, that could literally be a TV series!”

AM: That’s what I thought when I watched it.

CC: I mean, if the end didn’t happen and we didn’t prolong certain things, but those brothers being that way and being invited to that party. Because a lot of times, Curtiss doesn’t get invited to those parties. I don’t know why that is. He normally gets invited to the other party. Where he is the only one that is there. When I say that, I mean that he is the only Black face there. He is the only Black person that is there. Which it is what it is. I’m not complaining.

AM: I have been in those doors and know it well!

CC: Yeah, it’s like, why aren’t y’all coming?

AM: Hello again my friend, it’s just me!

CC: It’s just me.

AM: Carrying the torch for everybody and sometimes nobody.

CC: Everyone and sometimes no one. They’re just different right? Sitting with Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Killers of the Flower Moon) is just different then sitting with Charles Murray. It’s not better or worse, it’s just different. So that was immediately what it was. It was about this brotherhood, this family unit and how close knit they were and than when Charles said that it was loosely based on his family, and his brothers and it was like, oh wow, this is an opportunity to represent and to get a peek into our culture in a different way.

I’m pausing because I’m trying to think of different films that dabbled in that area and -

AM: It’s hard to think of one.

CC: I can see friends that you think of them as brothers because they’re so close and they grew up together, but literally being brothers from the same mother and father.

AM: The 5 Heartbeats gave that vibe, but they were not brothers.

CC: Oh I love that movie!

AM: [Sings] Nights like this, I wish raindrops would fall -

CC: Oh man, I love it.

AM: Haha no you’re right. It did feel different and I hadn’t really seen that dynamic and certainly not with 4 brothers.

CC: So it was special and I appreciate being brought to the party. I wish that it did better at the box office, but I find people that stop me and say, “oh my God, I really loved that movie,” and it touches you because it could just as easily be overlooked and forgotten about. Same way about Roxanne Roxanne, people pop up and say, “ oh man, you get on my nerves – you took that woman!” It’s like ok!

AM: I have to say that I liked your character Marcus Edison in The Bold Type. I was a huge fan of that show.

CC: Ok!

AM: It was nice to see you in a different way in that series.

CC: Right, right, right!

AM: Mayans FC, we enjoyed you in that!

We were huge Sons of Anarchy fan so when the spinoff came out, we were ready for Mayans!

What do you love about storytelling?

CC: The exploration of self because a lot of times, I have gone through – well, I am the oldest of 5. My next sibling down from me is 3 years younger then me and it’s a girl. So although Renee and I are close, we weren’t hanging out you know what I mean, that’s my sister. So, a lot of times I found myself by myself so I read a lot. I had a really close friend that I had known since kindergarten, but I read a lot, I watched a lot of TV, and I was absorbing a lot of stories and I lived through things that I saw. I remember growing up saying, “I wonder what I would have done if that was me?” Like incidents that happened in the neighborhood and what not and then in television and movies too – it was always, I wonder what I would have done. So absorbing that, you go to school, and then college and all of that – you get fed more stuff. You get the opportunity to express all of the inner sides of yourself that just stay dormant because there is no way to express that. But then all of a sudden, you come across this character that seems so far from who you are where you say, “you know what? I remember when I was 17 and I was thinking about what if I was the FBI Chief or that I was in charge of the police and this is an opportunity to bring out that 17 year old idea along with all of the new information that I have and bring it together."

So I enjoy that part of exploration to bring along the storytelling and being able to purge certain aspects of myself and I also like the finding of stuff. Sometimes a play or a movie or a television show takes me to a part of the country or a part of the world that I have never been to before. And just by that, you’re exploring and seeing things that you never have before! The Interpreter, we shot in Mozambique and I had never been to the Mother Land and when I tell you Kimmie, that it was eye opening. It was eye opening and I will tell you a quick story about this, but it was a long time ago, but I will never forget this.

I don’t know if you remember The Interpreter, but there is a scene where these young boys come to basically, assassinate my character and another character by someone else. But these young men who did the scene were locals. They were for a lack of a better word, very impoverished – they were poor. So, the costumer, the cast, decided to give them a gift and got them these bikes. They were getting paid for the movie, but just to say thank you, they received these bikes. Dare I say, the next day on set, they came back walking in and everyone was like, why are they walking? We were told that their bikes were stolen, they were taken, they’re gone. We were shocked and then an older gentleman said, “we can’t give gifts like this because it’s taken immediately.” And not even from other children, it’s from grown people coming to take these things.

That was a shock to me and then although the people were poor, it’s not like they were like, “oh help me, help me” they were living and full of life! It was just like, we don’t have these material things, but we know where to eat, we know where to congregate, we know where to worship, and it was life! It was so life affirming to me because sometimes, we can get so caught up in to the stuff and that makes us feel like whatever and you forget that all we need is this, we’re just sitting here talking, having a good time, taking some pictures, and that is what life is about.

AM: I always say that home is where I have a seat at the table. So it doesn’t even have to be in my house. If I feel that we connect and there is a vibe, that is a home. Because everything else it can be up and down.

CC: I agree with that 100%. So that is also what storytelling gives me. It’s an opportunity to meet and see people and have myself to be reminded of certain things like that or to be told certain things like that. When you see something concretely like that in your face, you’re like, “ok I need to make a shift.” So those are some of the things about storytelling that I love, why I love it so much, and sometimes the factor of not knowing how to do it!

Right now, I’m about to fly out to LA for this piece. I haven’t sung in a long time. So honestly, I’m scared, I’m a little like, “boy, you ain’t sung and you’re going where with big people on the stage?” It’s going to be some people there! So it’s not like it’s just us right here where I could just sing for you and y’all are like, go head!” So I’m like, ok Curtiss, I’m thinking in the car driving here and I’m trying to sing a little bit and I’m like, “bro, I don’t know what you’re going to do.”

AM: You have to start stomping that foot -

CC: And get the crowd singing with you! But part of me is like, that’s why you do it, you know what I mean?

AM: Yeah!

CC: You thought that at one point, growing up, that I would be a singer. That’s all I did, that’s all I was being praised for – so it’s there, but let’s see how much of it has morphed into this 57 year old dude now who hasn’t done it in 3-5 years on the stage or whatever. So I enjoy that factor too because it keeps you alive.

AM: If you don’t have that fire, it’s not going to work. You almost have to have that, did I do too much Icarus – ooo not quite.

CC: Haha not quite!

AM: Haha I mean it was close, no one else caught it, but it was giving Icarus for a moment!

CC: I totally agree!

AM: One of the things that I like is that every time I see you in different roles, if your character is like this in The Bold Type, it’s like this when it’s Douda, it’s completely different. Even down to the mannerisms, cadences, they are very separate from each other. That’s more than just getting into a character and doing the words. How do you approach your characters to give them do you approach your characters to give them this seamless and different feel that only your outer skin is the unifying link between them. Because everything else even the walk where it’s like a Denzel Washington (Fallen, Training Day, American Gangster) effect where he can completely be something else.

CC: Wow Kimmie, thank you for saying that. I mean, it makes me feel really good that somebody is even saying that I do that!

AM: I’m very detailed when I’m watching things as there a lot of great actors that do things and it’s like, that’s Joe and he’s doing Joe with the pink hat versus Joe with the orange. But you’re shapeshifting and everything falls away. I’m sitting with you now and it’s one person and I know if I was on set with you and you were about to do a scene as Douda, everything about the vibe and what you’re doing is going to be so different and it’s not the same person. Of course if it’s The Bold Type and I was there, you know that character is not going to do anything to anybody.

CC: For a long time and still to this day, I have always considered myself a character actor. It wasn’t until ’96 or ’97 where a manager who turned into my agent, he told me, “you’re not a character actor, you’re a leading man.” I know he was saying that to say poo poo to character actors, we’re going to focus and go here. But at the time, I was still finding my way in the business right and I was trying to figure out how I was going to move forward and how the industry was going to accept me and how I would find that. So any type of guidance you get from people that is in the business and you feel like, oh, maybe this is what I should be doing right?

So, I tried to take on that moniker of a leading man whatever that was and I started to do that. But, I found myself that whenever a project would come, it wouldn’t be like you said, let me be just Curtiss and let’s bring this thing forward so that everybody can be like, he’s doing this thing now, I had to find out where this person is from, subsequently, a lot of parts bring me to new information. So it’s like, “oh, they’re from Colorado, I’ve never been to Colorado, what’s in Colorado?” So, now I’m reading about Colorado and then I’m finding some obscure history in Colorado where something happened to Black folks, “oh, you know what would really be cool? If this was part of his ancestors and this is what happened to them.” So now I’m going to videos and this was before where things weren’t so easy to just pick up your phone. You had to go to the library and type things in and wherever else to try to find old clips of whatever so you could find out how they sat, how they talked, and whether it was slow or whether it was longer and how much of that can I add without it being a thing and so, that becomes part of the joy. That becomes part of the, “I’ve done this before, I’ve done this already.” Not so much as I don’t want to be seen as the blah, blah, blah, or for me, how do I live in this piece and what makes me have to work?

It's just like the thing that I’m about to do, start listening to music again, start practicing again. All of these things are like if I’m not challenging myself to a place where the goal is something that I have achieved or almost achieved, like the analogy that you just used -

AM: Icarus!

CC: If I don’t have that feeling, quickly I get bored, quickly I’m not serving the project, quickly I’ll not assist my other cast members and creators, because my energy will I’ll just kind of be there and I’m not having fun. So as I’m finding these things about certain things and I’m trying to bring it from the feet all the way to the tippy top of the head, like you said, I’ll miss the mark, I’ll be general, and I know what I’m going for. But then there will be that one moment where it’s like, boom! I did it! Like you said, nobody else might have known that I you said, nobody else might have known that I did it, but Kimmie might!

AM: I’ll know!

CC: Everyone else will be like, “ok, let’s move on.” But I can sit there knowing that I did that, I couldn’t do that 3 mins ago or weeks ago, but now I can! They’re like, “ok Curtiss! Good now move onto the next thing.” The fact that you’re even acknowledging that and saying that, it means a lot. I think that a lot of that comes from stage right?

AM: Right!

CC: Because we’re given the opportunity to play things that are out of our vessels out of our capacity. Especially as you’re younger, you’re playing my age people. I remember thinking that once I got to the city that I am going to play everything! And it’s like, no not in television/film – at 23. There used to be a breakdown from 23-50 and really they wanted someone in their 40s and I was 27 years old and I thought that I could do this! It’s like, sit down and I was like, “no, no I know how to do this!” And you just don’t know right? You don’t know what you don’t know.

AM: Age is seasoning.

CC: Oh my God! Sometimes through osmosis and sometimes through the wacks of being knocked down and you realize, that that was a good lesson, I guess. It’s going to be useful for something.

AM: It’s something at some point.

CC: Something at some point.

AM: We’re in Season 6B right now of The Chi.

We just saw last week’s episode over the weekend. Do you watch episodes as they come out?

CC: So the 6th season was broken up into two sections. One of the blessings that I had and it was not on purpose, was the strike because the strike allowed me to see the first half before we started the filming the 2nd half. So it gave me a new perspective on this character, for the season and how it was being told. I watched all of those, but I have not watched any of the 6B yet. I know what happens, but I don’t know what they edited, how it is cut together, I did some ADR (Editor’s Note: Audio Dialogue Replacement is the process of recording dialogue in a studio after filming to replace the initially recorded lines on set) for a portion of the scenes so I know those scenes in mind. How it comes together, I do not know. Other stuff, I wait. I may not watch it immediately I wait. I have not seen any of the House of Cards!

AM: Oh I loved your character in that!

CC: Everyone says that it’s so good! My wife watches everything! My wife watched ev-er-y-thing! She’ll watch and say, “yeah, you may not want to watch this one.”

AM: Haha! I loved House of Cards.

CC: But to your question, I have not watched the episodes in 6B.

AM: Well, what’s interesting is, because you have not watched this episode, and we watched it with baited breath, obviously it is Douda’s season. Everything is coming to a head, everyone is figuring out and in this episode you can see all the lives that he has integrated with and how it’s not real ly working out for people and you’re not in this episode per se, but only for a small 5 second period of a throwback from 6A. Just your character’s presence of walking down the aisle at the funeral of Papa (Shamon Brown Jr), as a viewer, you’re like, there he is! Then if you’re watching on Showtime, they have The Chi Tea with actors from the episode, and right after they did a segment on The Villains with you about Douda. It was about 7 or 8 minutes.

CC: I’m talking too?

AM: Yup, you’re talking too! So we have you sitting in the chair talking about the character and then other members of the cast talking about the character, and it’s just this beautiful juxtaposition of you talking about your character while other people are talking about it. What does it mean to you to be on this show? When we talked last time we were in Season 4 and you were hoping your character would still be around. You’re still around, hunted and wanted!

CC: It means a lot of different things. The Chi owes me nothing. It owes Curtiss as the man nothing and it owes Curtiss as the actor nothing. The Chi gave me my first series regular role where it wasn’t like I just popped into the scene out of nowhere. I had been beating the ground for years, hoping and praying and getting close and having pilots picked up and then not go anywhere. Here comes this other show and I get this opportunity. Dare I say that the 6B season that I was in and able to do, I was given the opportunity to really ask, pseudo demand, an input in who and what this guy does and how he does it.

AM: Nice.

CC: Under the guise of here is the script, right? You know what I mean, I wasn’t changing things saying no – no – no.

AM: Haha he’s not doing this anymore, he’s Olympus now!

CC: Haha right! It wasn’t that, it was more like, ok I need help trying to understand this is what y’all are saying and if it is this, I need this infused in there to help. Please let me do this and it wasn’t like, “ok sure” because of the hierarchy of things, dare I say that on the day and again, I don’t know what has been aired, but on the day, my contribution was heard and allowed to be executed with the caveat of let’s also do this other thing.

AM: For pickups just in case.

CC: I respect that! They’re not in charge, there are other people that are involved as well. So your question was The Chi, I would be disingenuous to say that the show that I joined is not the show that I am leaving. But I also understand that there aren’t many shows that stay the same from when they first started either.

There’s this phrase in the business called “jumping the shark” and I think it came from Happy Days when The Fonz (Henry Winkler) has these skis and it jumped over the shark (Editor’s Note: The phrase was coined in 1985 by radio personality Jon Hein in response to a 1977 episode from the 5th season of Happy Days when Fonzie jumps over a live shark while on water-skis) and it was like, what the hell is this? I understand the nature of the beast and that certain things happen blah, blah, blah. The way that the story is going and leading, I am happy for how it develops. I’m very grateful and very happy on where it develops.

AM: What do you want viewers to know about Douda because it’s not that he’s a one sided character. We’ve seen him as a Mayoral candidate that won, we saw him as an owner of the pizzeria, and yes, he also does all of these other things as well. He tried to find love and we see he's very multidimensional that can’t be written off as just one thing. How do you want viewers to be able to look at him?

CC: I would love for him to be able to say, “you know what, I wouldn’t have done that, but I kind of understand why he went there, but maybe I wouldn’t have done it that way. But I get it.” I would hate for it to just be some stuff that just makes no sense. I always argue for – I don’t mind him being a villain. I don’t mind him being downright evil, disgusting, whatever, but with a cause!

AM: Right.

CC: A purpose. The thing that I love about him thus far is, that even when he asked Emmett (Jacob Latimore) to get in the business and he let him know that he wanted to get in business with him. Emmett maybe didn’t have a choice, but to say yes, but he did ask! He didn’t say, “I’m going to get into business with you, goodbye.” He did ask and Emmett decided to do it. But even in that time, he gave Emmett everything he said he was going to give Emmett. So when Emmett decides that he no longer wants to be with him anymore, it’s kind of like in Douda’s world, but why? It’s not like he gave all of this stuff and then he’s coming in there and he’s taking your wife too, and I’m going to come in here and sleep in your bed, and burn your house down and put you in a shackle and I’m going to give you $5 while I take it. It wasn’t that at all! He did the business.

AM: It’s a balance sheet.

CC: It’s a balance sheet and you’re getting paid on top of it too! You’re not being asked to go out there and shoot these kids? You’re not being asked to do nothing out of sort, it’s just do what you have been doing and you will be paid. Dare I say that anything he asks of anybody, be it Tracy (Tai Davis), be it Roselyn (Kandi Burruss), be it whoever, he’s like, my word is my bond. If he is going to do it, he is going to do it. That’s what I love about it. He’s not a villain for villain’s sake, it’s not messing up stuff and whatever.

AM: It’s measured.

CC: It’s measured.

AM: You knew already before you jumped in there.

CC: You knew who Jimmy was when you first met Jimmy!

So that’s what I like and I also like that from the actor’s point of view, we got to see him as the bad guy, a business man, to oh my God wait a minute, he’s a pizza guy, but he has a mob. Then oh my God, he’s running for office, oh my God he’s smart too he defunded the police which is what the community needs – he cares about the people, oh he started the center with Tracy and he’s in love with this woman too and now it’s like, oh my God, this brother needs to go! What the hell? As an actor, I got to do all of that with just one character in 1 hour over 5 seasons!

AM: That’s a lot!

CC: That’s why I say, The Chi owes me nothing! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be able to show that and that’s what I hope people take away. Oh no no no, this guy came in here and he gave us a 3D, interesting, complicated, individual who at the end, he made us hate him! Because before we didn’t, we didn’t want to, it was growing and not because all of a sudden he was doing the crazy stuff, it was just the ongoing elements.

AM: The cast this season is, and it has always been, amazing. Just looking at this season, Lynn Whitfield (A Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Eve’s Bayou, Greenleaf), Leon Robinson (The Five Heartbeats, City on a Hill, Waiting to Exhale), Iman Shumpert (Them, Twenties, Under His Influence), so many different people. What have been some of your favorite moments of the season as you look back or even across the series?

CC: There have been a few of them. When you asked me, I know the first one that popped up in my mind, Carl Lumbly (The Falcon and the Winter Solider, The Fall of the House of Usher, Doctor Sleep), he played the old man and that was Douda’s mentor. He was in prison and he gave him his name. I have loved this guys work from years and years and years and to have the opportunity to sit across from him in a scene really touched my soul. That was a moment.

I mean Lynn Whitfield, you kind of look at her in the face and it’s like, “oh my God, you’re Lynn Whitfield!”

AM: Every time she’s on screen, it’s a moment. It’s like Diahann Carroll (The Colbys, Dynasty, White Collar) walking in.

CC: Right? She is – she’s the essence of! So that’s amazing. Steven Williams (X-Files, The Leftovers, Birds of Prey) who played Q. Even watching, listening, and talking to him, we would hang out afterwards and just hearing his stories and hearing him talk about Cooley High and 21 Jump Street and you just kind of look and of course, subsequently, I get to work with Glynn Turman (A Different World, Men of Honor, Percy Jackson and The Olympians) from The Devil You Know who played the father, because he was also Cooley High with Steven and putting that together because they’re friends, so those have been some memorable moments for me from the top of my head that I never thought that I would have the opportunity to, grace the screen, with and talk to and those are the first 3 that come to mind.

Then the other cast members that are there too are cool in different ways. The Jacob Latimore (Ride Along, Collateral Beauty, Like A Boss) of it all, the Yolanda Ross (Antwone Fisher, American Gigolo series, How to Get Away with Murder) of it all, Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton, Keanu, Zola) that got into some trouble, and even little Alex R. Hibbert (Moonlight, Code Switch, Black Panther) who plays Kevin, Michael Epps (Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Primary Position), and Shamon Brown Jr (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Chicago Fire) and so is Tai Davis (Save the Last Dance, Chicago Med, Empire) who plays Tracy. You know what I mean? It’s really kind of cool to mix and mingle and have real conversations. Kandi, I never thought (Real Housewives of Atlanta, SWV & XSCAPE!

AM: When I see her on screen, I don’t see her as a multi-platinum artist and phenomenal songwriter that has written for so many people across genres or even of being one of the Real Housewives of Atlanta. So when the two of you are on screen together it’s a believable dynamic where you can burn the houses down!

CC: Mmm hmm oh yeah.

AM: I was hooked on the show from the first episode. Part of it being I’m from the Midwest, I’m from Indianapolis so seeing something that is from Chicago that’s amazing. But how the show presents a cast of characters across a wide array of socioeconomics as opposed to all of these people live in a ghetto or all of the characters are on this tract. It’s the mix and the hybridity of it all. The topics that are covered and mental health from last season, and this season, and especially as it pertains and applies to the Black community as some of us do and some of us don’t. How important is it for viewers to understand that these are major takeaways that we can not only watch and enjoy, but to bring them back into our communities and enjoy, and into our communities for whatever our socioeconomic status is?

CC: It’s majorly important that we bring those things in and not be afraid to and to try to erase the stigma that is attached to going to therapy. I am an individual who, and I just started talking about it this season, and I found myself by accident talking about it if I’m totally honest. I battle inside myself because I’m saying, “just say it” and then I don’t want to just say it because I don’t want to put it out into the world. But then I think, “remember when you were just watching something and you found out that someone did something –“ you know what I mean?

AM: Yes.

CC: Ok, so it normalized it in such a way that I could see it. I don’t liken myself to someone else that’s whatever, but it could be a 7 year old, a 19 year old or whatever that can look at a man that’s on TV. So during the process, I used to have my ex-wife and I, we used to go to marriage counseling and that was my first introduction to a therapist. Being able to sit down and for the most part being there as a mediator so that we could hear each other. Subsequently, that marriage didn’t work out, but what did work out was that our communication was better and we found out that maybe this isn’t the union – she has a new husband, I have a new wife, we have 3 children.

So that was my first introduction to it. Over the course of acting, after the pandemic of course, that put a mirror onto a lot of different people and shined a light on a lot of things that made us wonder or let us know we weren’t as fluid as we thought we were, or as succinct in our daily living as we thought that we were because it was just stripped away so quickly right?

AM: Right.

CC: So what do we do now? So that was a factor and then at the same time, my 2 youngest children, the 20 year olds, they were leaving the house. So my wife and I became empty nesters for the first time and that was also like – what do we do?

AM: Yeah it a cadence shift.

CC: So am I supposed to – I mean we used to get them up at 7am to get them out of the house and now there is nobody to get out and -

AM: You’re just looking at each other ha!

CC: Ok!

AM: Haha you’re still here!

CC: Right like you too? So there was a moment where I’m trying to figure out the day-to-day and then I had the show to do and I have this character like we just talked about who likes to go to a deeper and deeper dark side, and that’s not who or what I really am. But I’m starting to find out that people are starting to associate Curtiss with this guy and sometimes I would meet people and they would be a little held back or hostile for whatever reason and that started to play a certain way in my mind. It pushed me to a certain place and I’m by myself and so I reintroduced myself to therapy. Dare I say that the show starts to do this as well? That’s really interesting to me. I honestly wish that there was a place in which – I mean, you know there was a time when Douda said to a news reporter and remember, he goes away in one season and just disappears and then he comes back and the woman says where were you and he literally says that he left and he got therapy.

AM: That was the 4th season because when we were talking and I said that I hoped that you would come back for Season 5 it was because of him leaving abruptly in the 4th.

CC: Yes and I wish that there was a point where we showed him trying to deal with some of his demons, why they happened, and whatever else, but that is a different show. But I’m glad that they did start this men’s circle and the only caveat that I would add to that is that I do feel that there needs to be a professional in those surroundings.

AM: Exactly.

CC: Because the purpose of it is to trust and totally trust that whatever you are speaking stays in that space and some skills to actually deal with what you are doing to try to break down the issue, the feelings, and all of the anxiety that you may be having too so there are some actual physical and mental activities that you can do to have that and to have somebody that is there that understands that to say that maybe this is something that you could try right? I think that that is also important. I think baby steps, you can’t do everything in one show and within that amount of time.

AM: Maybe for the show purpose if you think about it, the culture, as Black people, were not raised to bring in outside people in and to have these conversations so the very idea of doing what they’re doing is many steps beyond how we have been brought to think. If I told my mom I do breathwork or meditation, there would be a thought or a question in terms of why am I not praying or leaning on scripture when you can do all 3 as one doesn’t diminish another.

I agree with you as the first time I saw it, I thought that they should have a professional, but would those guys ask someone?

CC: I see that for the first time, but now some of the issues that they are dealing with, you can’t be in the group and say, “we need to kill Douda!”

AM: Oop that’s right you can’t do that!

CC: What is the group for now? Are y’all a gang, what are y’all about to do?

AM: It’s a tar and feather session right now haha! Yeah, you’re right I take it back!

CC: Yeah, that’s not what we’re talking about here, let’s keep all that out of this space, it’s a safe space. I think that if there was a professional there, they would say, “maybe that’s good, but maybe we should also think about how everyone is oppressed.” But once again, baby steps! Like what you said, the fact that we can see it and be like, “hey, maybe we can talk to my friend or my brother and just – we have to be careful with who we allow to see our inner most selves sometimes because even some loved ones have the best intentions but their actions may not show it in the ways that we need it at that time.

AM: What do you feel in terms of the mental health elements or components or things that you feel that you need in order to keep accountable? What do you do for yourself?

CC: There’s a lot. I have an emotional support animal named Bolo and that’s one thing. Because he keeps me accountable and whenever I get anxious or feel anxiety, he comes over and puts his big head on my leg and he makes me focus on him so that I can pet him and immediately, my blood pressure kind of goes down and my heart slows down and then I’m ok! I workout because I enjoy the endorphins that you get from that and the feeling of accomplishment. I live up in the mountains so I’m able to walk around and see nature a lot which is really good. I used to meditate a lot, I don’t do it anymore only because I don’t really have a real reason why I don’t. But I haven’t in a very long time, but I do find myself doing walks with him in the mountains and I make sure that I don’t bring my cellphone, I don’t bring my Apple Watch and I’m totally disconnected so I just say, “please Jesus don’t let anything happen to me because nobody is going to come for a couple of days and I have no communication!”

AM: Do you watch Hacks on Max?

CC: No, I do not.

AM: There was just an episode and it stars Jean Smart (Designing Women, Watchmen series, Mayor of Easttown) and she asks her writer to go on a walk although she suggested the King of Prussia because they were waiting to go back on QVC, they ended up out in the forest. They lose the writer’s phone in the river, Jean falls and hurts herself and she doesn’t have a phone because she wants to keep clean lines in her pockets so they wander in the wilderness until they find good Samaritans that take them back to their car! Jean reminds her that if they had walked in the mall, this wouldn’t have happened and it was a whole thing – but yeah!

CC: I love Jean Smart.

But yeah, that’s the active things that I do, but a lot of it is also that I haven’t started back up with my therapy and he just actually emailed me yesterday saying, “hey, are you good? Just checking in to make sure that you’re good.” I let him know that I was. I definitely will get back in touch with him and start talking with him because I think that because things are going to start shifting with me again I can feel myself sometimes getting to a place of spiraling down and I will just sit, my mother also suffered with depression and so I will literally put a cover over my head until I get to a point where I’m like, “you have to get up, you can’t stay here like this.” I will have to fight myself to just get up and just do something. But those are some of the things that I try to make sure that I focus on.

The thing that I do a lot is that I am a truth teller. What happens is, if you don’t know me or whatever, you don’t know that I’m telling you the truth. I’ll say it dead out – it may sound like a joke, or I’ll say it whatever. But now my wife, she’s able to pick up on it sometimes and she’s good at letting it pass for the day or two and then she’s like, “so, I’m going to find it,” you know what I mean? She’ll do something and then I’ll say, “yeah, maybe we do need to discuss what’s going on.”

AM: I get that! I’m an avoidant type. I don’t like to talk about myself and I’m more focused on being a fixer type. But when I get really quiet Paul will ask me if I’m good and I’ll say yes; however, he will keep asking because he knows something is off and that’s when the breakdown happens as I’m not someone who’s a crier or shows emotions per se, but you have to know me because if you don’t you will assume everything is ok. Part of that comes from the culture of how I was raised, having parents who were executives who gave me great tools to navigate and equip me for the world in terms of business, but those same tools applied in terms of how I internalize and utilize them personally are not great due to how I internalize things – so I need him to give me that nudge or alert that I have to examine what’s happening and not just say, “yeah this happened it’s fine or it’s ok” when in fact it is not.

CC: Wow, that’s beautiful that you have found this out, you know what I mean? The ability to acknowledge that and to access those feelings and for you to have the ability to feel comfortable and say, “we’re not going to be able to fix it, but we can just talk about it and you can feel better.”

AM: 100%.

Will we see you creating a foundation as mental health has been something that you have been talking about this season. Do you foresee yourself having a foundation, organization, or initiative for this?

CC: If you’re asking me this second, no I cannot. But you know, it’s one of those things that your calling is your calling and you can’t avoid it. I don’t right now. I have a lot more work to do with my acting career I think. There’s a place that I would like to be and I am not there yet, and I know that I am going to be there and I know that I have the wherewithal to do the work. It’s just the matter of time and the only way that I can access the time is to make sure that this is fine and this fine, so maybe those things will meet in the future and maybe this foundation or organization at some point will help me to get to the time.

AM: What are some upcoming projects that you have coming up! We know you have the show coming up and I hope that it’ll be streamed somewhere so that I can see it!

CC: Haha yeah! The next big thing is that I did this movie where the working title is Carry On and it stars myself, it stars Taron Egerton (Legend, Blackbird, Kingsman franchise), it stars Jason Bateman (Arrested Development, The Outsider, Ozark), it stars Danielle Deadwyler (P-Valley, Station Eleven, Till), and Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop, Jungle Cruise, Retribution) directed it. A big project that he did was Black Adam, but this is produced by Steven Spielberg’s (Jaws, Jurassic Park franchise, Indiana Jones franchise) company, Amblin Entertainment and Netflix. So it’s called Carry On and we shot it awhile back in New Orleans and it’s a thriller and it’s about the TSA and what happens at airports and when some incidents happen. So that’s the next big thing that's kinda going on and of course, next week I will be in LA for awhile.

AM: What do you want your legacy to be whether it’s in the industry or as a man?

CC: I mean, that’s not really up to me right? I mean, -

AM: At some point, it kind of is. Because what you leave behind is what’s remembered.

CC: Yeah hopefully, you left it behind, but no one is remembering that! “Well you know that one time, he stepped on my foot –“

AM: And he owed me $5!

CC: And he owed me $5 and he stepped on my foot haha – is that what you want to say man?

As far as in the industry right? I know that this is going to happen right and I’m not trying to be arrogant about it, but I want to be known as one of those people who when you say, and I’m saying it right now to a reporter for the record, when you say great actors, “oh man, you have Sidney Poitier (To Sir With Love, In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner), Denzel Washington,” and I want you to say Curtiss Cook.

AM: You know what I was going to tell you earlier, that there are things you do that remind me of Sidney Portier with his career. There are nuances, but you are still your own person.

CC: Oh come on!

At the end, I wanted it to be because of the body of work, the type of the work, the commitment to the work, nothing against James Earl Jones (Coming to America franchise, The Lion King, Field of Dreams), nothing against Laurence Fishburne (Matrix franchise, Clipped, Megalopolis), nothing against Samuel Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Glass, Avengers franchise), nothing against Don Cheadle (House of Lies, Crash, Avengers franchise), we can go on and on about people that do amazing things – Forest Whitaker (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Black Panther, Godfather of Harlem) – you know what I mean?

AM: Yup!

CC: There are loads of folks where you’re like yeah!

AM: But then there’s a craft!

CC: Yes, a craft and a je ne sais quoi that not everybody possesses and it’s sometimes you work to get it, or you’re born with it and you know how to use it right? I’m still at the process of finding out who and what this vessel is because it’s going to sound as crazy as hell, but I don’t know, I’m feeling comfortable – I never thought that I was a handsome dude. I remember growing up, I never thought that I was ugly, I never thought that I was handsome like people saying, “oh yeah, he’s nice – never.” So, whatever got me into the spaces and rooms for girlfriends or whatever, it was always me being silly, or funny, or charming, or whatever. They’d say, “oh, he’s so funny, you know what? He’s kind of cute too come on over here Curtiss." And I was like yeah! But now, as I’m getting older or whatever, I’m hearing more and feeling more this attention of ooo wow! Honestly, 70% of myself is like, I don’t believe you, but I’m going to let you say it and I’m going to move on for whatever whatever. So that goes back to the, “oh, you said that you wanted this thing back in Jr High School and now it’s come into fruition.” Whatever is happening, and whatever they are seeing, maybe it’s an inner/outer thing, maybe it’s your nose grew into your forehead or something, or the proportions on me, maybe the teeth came in right, but I don’t know – today is good!” So I think that it’s part of it right for the 2 people that I named. You look at them and you go, ok. If you look at them too hard, you say, “I don’t know if they are the most handsomest people in the whole wide world, but when you put it all together, you’re like, there is a thing about them.”

AM: It’s a presence and I think that’s what got me for the end of the 5 seconds of last week’s The Chi episode because it was a bit of that Poitier moment where all the things come together. You didn’t say anything, it was a montage of other things, but it was the only camera time that you had in that episode and yet because everyone is talking about how are we going to get this man, there he is!

PAUL FARKAS: Honestly, it was almost like Jack Nicholson (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, A Few Good Men, The Departed) because of your eyes! It was very brief, only like 3 seconds.

AM: All episode it was like, we’ve been hearing his name, but we haven’t seen him and it was pretty impactful and then the Villains feature ran after that.

CC: Yeah, that’s part of it and hopefully that people will say, “when I met him, he was a cool person. He was a cool dude and he wasn’t trying to be nothing that he ain’t.” I’ve worked with Mark Ruffalo (I Know This Much is True, Avengers franchise, Poor Things).

AM: That’s another one whether he’s the Hulk or he’s the attorney in Dark Waters fighting environmental pollution, or his role in Poor Things you get immersed into who he’s playing.

CC: Mark is a beast! But what you leave with when you think of him is what people will say about him, that he’s just a cool dude. You know what I mean? You meet him and he’s not trying to be cool or doing whatever. I hope that that is what they also say. When you’re young, you burn bridges that you don’t necessarily need to, but you don’t understand it –

AM: You don’t think it matters.

CC: Right. I just make sure that I come in, I’m prepared, ready, honest, open, and nice! Literally nice. It’s ok to be nice, it’s ok to say good morning and hi, it’s ok!

AM: A lot of that also comes from being in the Midwest.

CC: Ok, but hopefully those are 2 things that I can think of in addition to being a good dad and all of that.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us about Life Hospitality, who are the founders/owners, and when this group launched.

FULL LIFE HOSPITALITY: Full Life Hospitality is behind some of the most sought-after venues in New York City, including Virgo, Make Believe, Music For A While, and Creatures at Selina Rooftop. With each venue, we're pushing the boundaries and evolving our concepts to provide truly incredible experiences every time guests walk into one of our venues. AM: When did Creatures launch?

FLH: Creatures at Selina Rooftop opened in July of 2023. We've taken the time during the winter months to renovate the space extensively. We're thrilled to announce that the newly renovated pool will be opening at the end of June, offering guests an enhanced rooftop experience just in time for summer.

AM: Tell us about the vibe and ambiance of Creatures in terms of the design and what guests can expect when they enter.

FLH: Creatures offers a chic and relaxed atmosphere with a bohemian-inspired design. Guests can expect an inviting space adorned with lush greenery, comfortable seating, and vibrant décor. The rooftop setting provides stunning views of the Chelsea skyline, creating a perfect backdrop for socializing and enjoying crafted cocktails and delicious food.

AM: What are 3 appetizers that you suggest at Creatures that we should try?

FLH: Our House Hummus, topped with tomato seeds, schug, tahini, and served with pita bread, is a must-try. The Spicy Picanha Skewer with charred peas and mint puree offers a surprising and delightful bite. Lastly, the Branzino Crudo with blood orange, mint olive oil, and labneh cheese provides bright and bold flavors that are refreshingly perfect for a warm summer’s day.

AM: What are 3 mains that we should try with friends and family?

FLH: Choosing just three favorites is tough because Chef Neil Strauber's menu is thoughtfully crafted with inspiration from the Levant Region, infusing each dish with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. The Fish Schnitzel Tacos are a must-try, drizzled with spicy labneh and topped with Israeli salad in pita tacos. AM: Will Creatures do anything for PRIDE?

FLH: Yes, we’re thrilled to host a party for PRIDE. It will begin at 2pm on Sunday, June 30th. We’ll also be launching our weekly party called Creatures @ Sunset this Sunday, June 2nd, at 2pm - Welcoming everyone in the LGBTQ+ community to dance with us into the night.

AM: Creatures is open Wed – Sunday, will additional days be added?

FLH: While we are currently open from Wednesday to Sunday, we are exploring the possibility of adding additional days during the summer months. We will be testing out Salsa on the roof next Tuesday! Stay tuned for more details!

Our Vinyl Happy Hour from 9 PM-11 PM is designed to attract new customers who might not have experienced a record bar before. And who can resist a $10 Dirty Martini to kick off the night?

AM: Can you talk about the design aesthetic of the space? What are upcoming events taking place here that we should know about whether for 4th of July or other days during the summer?

FLH: Upcoming events include a 4th of Julycelebration, weekend parties, summer brunches, Salsa Tuesdays, happy hour parties and dinner parties. Keep an eye on our social media channels and website for the latest updates on events.

THE VISION | JERMELLE SIMON

There are so many options and genres of shows that we can watch and when it comes to streaming, the possibilities are beyond endless. With so much going on, we do love our feel good shows that take us away from our day-to-day! Earlier this summer, we took some time to talk with Jermelle Simon of NETFLIX's The Upshaws which is one of the top rated shows on the platform who just finished Season 3 earlier this year and Season 4 drops this month! We wanted to talk about his career, his experience on the stage, his Denzel Washington story, being on The Upshaws, and his focus on fitness as a means to make sure that you put yourself first!

This article has heavy spoilers and we talk about a number of plot points, cliffhangers, and arcs from the first 3 seasons of this show. If you have yet to watch and want to be spoiler free, binge the episodes now and then come back to enjoy this article. We have a light discussion on Season 4 as well; however, that discussion is spolier free.

This interview was conducted in May 2023, prior to the start of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike which began on July 14.

ATHLEISURE MAG: When did you realize that you wanted to be an actor?

JERMELLE SIMON: I don’t know if I ever realized it! I just remember being in the 3rd grade and we had to do a play as part of our curriculum and I remember having that feeling like, “man, I love to pretend, I love to be someone else.” It’s fun and interesting to me and obviously, I couldn’t express it at 8 or 9 or whatever that age is when you’re in the 3rd grade. That feeling just kind of kept growing and I kept craving it and by 5th grade, I was in Drama Club and I think that that is when it hit. I was in the 5th grade, I started to understand it a little bit more. I thought that everyone liked it at first, you know what I mean? I thought it was so great and then I realized that I was the only other one doing it.

AM: I love that! Before we delve into The Upshaws, what is your process in terms of how you prepare for your roles in general and how do you sync in with your characters?

JS: I think just understanding the story. So reading the script and understanding what story the writer is trying to tell. What’s my role in the story? Am I an antagonist, the protagonist, am I comedic relief? You know, it’s about understanding my role in the entire script and then I think that with years of people watching, the stories that are on television, I think that we have always seen those characters before. Maybe I have an aunt or an uncle or even with me having children, with my role now, it was easy to dive into the father aspect, because I have 3 children. Sometimes it’s based off of experience and sometimes it’s based off of people watching, and having a huge imagination!

AM: Exaclty!

JS: I think that that helps a lot too. Repetition – I think that I read that a lot of actors read a script over 100 times. You know it front and back. I can’t build up enough stamina to read it 100 times, but I have read a script 10 times and I know that that’s enough for me. This way, I know that I know the story front and back. I think that it’s one of those magical things where you sleep on it and then it just clicks! I don’t know, it’s a hard thing to explain, but it will click especially after you understand the story. So I think that the most important thing is to understand the story that you’re telling and the part that you play in the story that you’re telling.

AM: We read that you also have experience on the stage. You were in August Wilson’s (The Piano Lesson, Seven Guitars, Radio Golf) Fences for 8 weeks where you played Cory. But you actually got the opportunity to audition for Denzel Washington (Training Day, American Gangster, Equalizer franchise) at his home to play that character in the film adaptation. What was that experience like?

JS: You know what’s so wild? That story still anchors me in those times where I’m feeling inadequate. You know even when I am on a hit show like on Netflix, you’re still human and there are those moments where you don’t feel as confident and you don’t feel as talented. I just think that any artist kind of feels that way. I always go back to, man, I was at Denzel Washington’s house with Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder, DC’s Suicide Squad franchise, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Denzel Washington, the whole cast! In order to get to that space, this kind of has to be for you. That always reminds me that this is for me.

To this day, I think that it was one of the most extraordinary things that has ever happened to me. To the point that sometimes I don’t even believe that it happened!

AM: We have to admit that when we read that, we were like, he’s in this man’s house with all of these people – that is a moment. There are times regardless of your vertical or career that you can have amazing things happen, but in the course of things, you ask yourself is this it? You question that which you have excelled at for a number of reasons. But then you think about moments that took place that like you said, you wonder if that happened and you grasp it and realize that you are where you need to be and it gives you that fuel for whatever it is that you do in life.

JS: Yes! That’s what it is. It fills you up! Those are constantly in your memory bank and it’s always one of those things that I can always go back to regardless. If I ever work with them again – I just recently saw Viola Davis at the NAACP Image Awards and I saw her before that at an Oscar Gifting Suite and each time I see her, I forget that she knows me and that she remembers me! That’s still so shocking to me, because I will say, “oh, I worked with you” and she’ll say, “I know." Then I remind myself that I don’t have to say that every time that I see her because I’m just in such a shock that she remembers that.

It was like a 6 week process. I was in the running, I was in the top 3. It was a journey for sure that still gives me high vibrations. In this industry, you need as much as you can because it’s such an up and down thing. Like right now, we’re in the writer’s strike and they should get the things that they deserve and that means that everything has to kind of shut down. So, I’m not working right now and you just go through so many things being an actor in this industry. It comes with so much and so the things that you can hang onto that help you feel confident to feel better, because you still have to go through everyday life. I was just telling a friend today that sometimes it’s difficult because even on the days that you don’t want to perform, you have to and it’s like sometimes you have to be someone else and you do that when you’re on a show. I have to – my job is to become a whole different person. That takes so much energy and me and Kim Fields (Living Single, Insecure, All the Queen’s Men), we were just talking about that the other week. It’s like, our job is to become these people and I don’t think that people realize how that can be exhausting because that takes all of you. To do it justice, to do it right, you have to give all of you because people can sense when you’re not. I know that that’s a long answer!

AM: You’re absolutely right in what you shared. Even in life sometimes in general. I’m a big believer in dramaturgical behavior in the sense that we have many masks that we wear, even if it’s authentic to us. How you are with your best friend might be different from your mom and when you’re in those circles like that, it can be exhausting!

JS: Yes! That’s so true. Because even how I am as a father is completely different then how I am as a friend or how I am as an actor. You know, I try to blend it all. Even when I first started giving interviews, especially when I was doing press for this, I felt that I needed to say this answer and needed to say whatever. Now, I’m learning to just be me and people are appreciating that more and I’m always thinking that I over share and talk too much and then people will be like, “no, we love that!”

AM: Exactly!

JS: I would apologize and I know I did it a few times here and you and other people have been like, we want to hear you, we want to hear who you are. That’s ok and people love authenticity! That’s what makes you who you are and everyone is different and can bring something different to the table and it’s all equally important. So I’m just now learning that on my 3rd season of the show. I think that everything happens so fast and all at once and I had to catch up to it.

AM: You know what, sometimes it’s just a process!

How did you find out about The Upshaws, the character, and what drew you to want to be part of it?

JS: I felt like it was just like any other day where your manager or agent sends you an audition and when you’re on the come up, you’ll kind of do any role to kind of get on. Because I think it’s like so many different worlds and realms that factor in. Like you have the time when no one knows you yet and so you audition for everything, you’re doing commercials and anything that you can to make the dollar because LA is expensive. Then not only that, but you just love acting and the craft, so anytime that you can play, you do it!

So that’s how it started. It was any other audition and I was like here I go, I’m going to give it all I’ve got. Every audition I give it all I’ve got. But I did look at it and I saw Netflix and that was like a dream of mine. I think that a lot of actors have that dream. I mean. Netflix is a powerhouse and they’re the largest streaming platform in the world! It’s international and it’s all the things! So I saw that – then sometimes you can see that and then it can play with your confidence a little bit. So you start to second guess yourself – am I right for this – is it too big for me? Even though you want it, it’s intimidating because it’s Netflix. Then I see Mike Epps (Uncle Buck series, The Hangover, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins), Kim Fields, Wanda Sykes (Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Black-ish) and I’m like – I had to let it go. I let those parts go – the parts that scared me like those names, the platform.

I released it and then it goes back to that Denzel story. I had such an intense scene with him but in that scene, I had to let go of the fact that it was Denzel. I know what I’m doing when it comes to acting and I just had to go for what I know and I know how to embody this Cory character. I don’t care who it is, you lose yourself in that moment.

So I did that same kind of thing when I auditioned for this show. I released Netflix and I released the names. So I did that and I have had many auditions, but this one, I knew that my first audition that if I got a callback for it, then this would be mine. The process is that you go for your initial one, then they call you back and then they might call you back for the 3rd time. Maybe a 4th time and then you test. But I knew that if I got a call back for this one, it’s over!

AM: You’re like, it’s mine!

JS: I get the callback and immediately, I stop second guessing myself. This is how far I went into it. I already knew what I was going to post. It was a meme and he was in the car, his name is Desi Banks and he’s an online comedian. He’s in the car with the top down saying, “yes sir!!!” He’s hyped because something happened. I couldn’t obviously say what it was, but I wanted to do something that was real low key and then people would be wondering. I had everything planned out and I think that I felt it before everything happened. It’s really important to manifest things that I already feel about the thing before the thing even comes and not to wait for the thing to come to then feel it. I feel that people do it backwards. So that was the first time that I've done that where I was already embodying the role and what it would feel like. So I go from that to the callback, 2 days later after the first audition and the callback was at 6pm and my manager called me at 11pm. He told me that I was the choice, we had to go through network approval and he let me know that I had pretty much booked it. What do they say? The rest is history! I didn’t know that it was going to be history like this! I didn’t really realize what I was going to be getting into.

AM: Yeah! I know that the 3rd season was released earlier this year and the 4th season drops in August – doing 2 seasons in the same year!

JS: Yeah, going so fast!

AM: I mean that’s amazing! Before we get into the upcoming season, for our readers who may not have seen this show yet, what is The Upshaws and tell us about your character, Bernard Jr.

JS: The Upshaws is about a Black family based out of Indiana and it’s your Norman Lear (Good Times, All in the Family, The Jeffersons) style sitcom. It’s a bit edgy, we talk about really relatable things, and we bring hilarity to everyday life. I feel like it’s a family that talks about real topics that people really go through. You have a mom, you have a dad, younger children in high school, you have me who my character is the oldest of the Upshaw family. Bennie Upshaw (Mike Epps) has 4 children – Bernard Upshaw Jr., it’s Kelvin (Diamond Lyons), Aaliyah (Khali Daniya-Renee Spraggins), and Maya (Journey Christine). Kelvin is a side kid that Bennie had when he was on a break with Regina, my mom who is played by Kim Fields. You have a show where again, we talk about real life things and we bring light to it, we bring laughter to it, and I think that in the world that we live in now, we need more comfort shows, we need more laughter. I agree that we need all the other things, but laughter is really good for the soul. It’s medicine. So we definitely bring the laughter in each episode and each one has an unexpected twist or turn. Each finale has this cliffhanger that has you on the edge of your seat.

So I think that we’re onto something and that’s why it’s so successful. We have such great writers that are always even for us, that it’s about expecting the unexpected. We go in week after week never knowing what our characters are going to do. I think that that’s the fun part of The Upshaws, it’s always pushing the envelope – we curse. Traditionally, your sitcoms that run on a network, they couldn’t say certain words. We have the freedom to do a lot more things so we can talk about a lot more topics. I think that it makes us that much more relatable.

As far as my character, I play Bernard Upshaw Jr., the oldest of the Upshaw kids. The series starts off with Bernard holding onto this secret and trying to figure his life out. His secret is his sexuality, so he is gay, he doesn’t necessarily know how to come out to his parents so it’s weighing heavy on him and as you can see during the first season, in my opinion he’s very moody and you can just tell that there is something going on. He also has a very challenging relationship with his father who is Bennie Upshaw played by Mike Epps. Bennie and Regina had him when they were kids in high school so he wasn’t there for him as much as he could have been because he was also growing up too. So it was a little bit of a strained relationship with his father because of that as well as with himself because he wasn’t living in his own truth.

As the series continues, you get to see him come out. You see him live out loud, you get to see him become a father. Not to give it all away to those who haven’t seen it – ha!

AM: We have a significant spoiler alert! People need catch up before reading this!

JS: You get to see him become a father, you get to see him date. I think that now in the upcoming season, you get to see him do more of that. You get to dive deeper into who he is as a person because there are levels to everything. We go through different phases in our lives and we just keep growing and growing. You get to see Bernard grow in all of these areas as a partner, a father, and as a family member. So yeah, you get to see him become more and more into the higher version of himself. From Season 1 – Season 3 or from part 1 to part 4, it’s 2 different Bernards.

AM: Which is amazing because like you were talking about, you’re playing so many different complexities and dynamics, we see him struggling with himself and being able to come out and live his truth, then there’s his daughter and what family means and that complexity, and then understanding the relationship with the father dynamic of his dad and himself. Then there’s families you claim versus those you have paradigm as well. Having all of that there, what does it mean to have this form of representation? Growing up as a kid, we had The Cosby Show and other kinds of shows, but this is another kind of representation that is also real and a different dynamic. So what does that mean to you to be able to present that to people?

JS: I love it! I went into this as an actor portraying a role and not really realizing at first, the impact that this show has on people. I think that to be part of something where people feel seen, people feel heard, - so many people reach out and say, “this is such an authentic representation of Black people.” It’s so comforting, this makes me laugh, this is not watered down and I think at first, that was so much pressure to me, because I felt like we had to get it right! It’s like, no, that’s the point.

It’s effortless. The chemistry works it just flows and I think that again at first, it was a lot of pressure. Because even for me and the representation to the gay community, I didn’t really know because I get the question a lot. I didn’t exactly sign up to be a role model, but after the impact and after so many DMs and thank you’s, I realized that it was so important to see yourself because representation shapes how people will react to you. This is how people learn how to live in this world. It’s such a huge responsibility to do it right and I think that I’m just so proud of us for being perfectly imperfect because that is what is needed to be shown on television. Everyone is not the Cosby’s, everyone is not the Winslows.

AM: Yup!

JS: Now we have The Upshaws. I wouldn’t even call it a dysfunctional family, it’s real life. It’s things that happen in real life. I feel super proud to be in a position where me living my dreams helps someone to heal, grow, feel seen, and heard. I feel extremely proud of our writer’s of our castmates, and Netflix for getting it right.

Even for me, for me being on the show, it doesn’t stop it from being my comfort show. A lot of people can’t watch their work. I can put The Upshaws on and I don’t know. It’s one of my comfort shows and it’s always weird to say because it can seem so egotistical when I’m putting on my own show while I’m cleaning up. Me and my son have this thing because I let him watch the show – he loves it. I make breakfast Saturday morning and we sit and he picks his favorite episode of the show because it is our comfort show you know? He gets to see himself you know? I think that that’s just really important for you to be able to see yourself and we provide that for people in a way that some people have not seen before.

AM: What can you tell us, if anything about the upcoming season or what we should keep an eye out for?

JS: I really do think that it’s full of unexpected surprises. I think that in this sitcom world, you can do so many things. We have always had our groove and our chemistry, but you have to remember that part 1, we were all kind of strangers to one another and we still had that chemistry. Now, 3 years later, we’re still working together and I said this in another interview – you can’t tell me that these people aren’t my family. This is legit my family. So going to work, with my family – you can expect this season to have more chemistry and I think that we take more risks because we’re more comfortable with each other. The writers know how to write for us. They always knew but we collaborate now. It’s a well-oiled machine. I think that we have upped the ante with the twists and turns that we have. Our finale is bizarre. It’s really going to keep you on the edge of your seat. Just like in the previous seasons, but I think that it’s like 2.0 now!

AM: Oh wow. I can only imagine.

JS: We watch the show. We’re filming it every week. So we never know what to expect. So when we see it, it’s like how the viewers are doing it when they’re bingeing. For ever how many weeks we do it, we have to put that time into it and we see it weekly. I have to ask myself, “I wonder what Bernard is going to do next?” I’m rooting for him and I want to see what happens. I have to wait week by week! It’s exciting.

AM: Are there any other upcoming projects that we should keep an eye out for that you can share?

JS: Right now, I’m still auditioning. My main focus right now is The Upshaws, but I’m putting it out there that I am going to do a film this summer. Don’t know which one, but it’s going to be something, I already feel it. You know, when we have our next conversation, we can talk about it.

AM: You are passionate about fitness and you have a fitness app. Tell us about this as in looking at your IG, you’re not just acting, you have other things that you are also involved in.

JS: Yes, I have a fitness line called Jrambo Bands which are resistance bands that come in a 3-pack. They’re 5lbs, 10lbs, and 20lbs. It’s like all of your at home essentials for people who feel that maybe the gym isn’t convenient or they are too intimidated so they can work from home. I have ab belts that’s a belt you put on that’s similar to a waist trainer so it can assist you in being able to lose the water weight. This way you can have a more defined stomach. I recently came out with gym bags which is an all in one that you can use as a carryon for your flights or as an everyday bag. It’s my Jrambo bags and it should be out soon.

I’m just building that because I have such an extreme passion for fitness because a couple of years ago, I started training with a trainer. I loved the results, but I love how it made me feel and I think with me being an actor, you need all the confidence that you can get. It gave me such confidence because I was connected with myself, being disciplined, stretching myself far beyond what I could be, and it gave me that superhuman kind of feeling. I wanted everyone to feel that way. Everyone deserves to feel like, “man, I’m really doing this!” Because you’re constantly when you’re working out and are part of that lifestyle, you’re constantly choosing yourself.

AM: That’s right!

JS: I think that that is important in any kind of career – any position in life. If you’re constantly choosing yourself, you can’t fail. So I wanted to spread that feeling to a lot of people and I started off doing classes. I became a personal trainer, but I have way too much energy as you can tell to be with just one person! So my classes are Jrambo HIIT which is high intensity interval training. Jrambo - long story short – comes from one day I walked into a gym and I sweat a lot when I work out. So I put a bandana on my head and they said Jermabo and I said, “what – I like that, but let me change it to Jrambo,” and it just sort of stuck.

AM: Love it!

JS: So it’s my Sasha Fierce like Beyoncé! So I use that and everything is Jrambo Bands, Jrambo Bags, Jrambo Abs and that’s where that came from! My classes, once I got the show, I couldn’t teach my classes so I developed that app. So the app where I train people with the classes is Jrambo HIITs.com. I come from South Carolina where it’s Soul Food capitol to me. So I’ve learned how to eat now. I fell in love with wellness and health and wellness in general. That keeps me busy when acting is not. I think that people should have multiple passions and multiple things that make you feel alive!

A DECADE OF INTRIGUE | HISHAM TAWFIQ

For the last 10 years, we have enjoyed NBC's The Blacklist where we are introduced to Raymond "Red" Reddington (James Spader) a former ex-US Naval Intelligence officer who became a prominent criminal and has evaded the FBI and been on their Most Wanted fugitive list for decades. He voluntarily gives himself up to FBI and lets them know that he has created a list known as the Blacklist. In his exchange to inform on their operations, he wants to receive immunity from prosecution as long as he works exclusively with FBI Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone).

We learned about their relationship with this rookie agent, Blacklisters and Dembe Zuma, played by Hisham Tawfiq who is his number 2. We have seen him be his confidant and navigate his way to joining the FBI himself! We caught up with him to talk about his service in the military, being a first responder, how he got into the industry and his role in the series.

If you have yet to watch The Blacklist, this interview will include discussions about plot points about the show and specifically Season 9 and the current and final season, Season 10 which is airing now.

ATHLEISURE MAG: In doing the research into your backstory, you have always fostered your work in the arts as well as being a literal super hero with your time in the Marines and being a firefighter in the FDNY for 20 years while still focusing on being an entertainer, when you were growing up, what did you want to be?

HASHIM TAWFIQ: When I was growing up, I had dreams of becoming a pilot! And I think that at the time, to be a pilot, you had to have 20/20 vision so that quickly left my vision. But I was always an outdoors type of person. I was always into physical activity and I think my dream was to be a football player, but then I got injured. I took a dance class and I fell in love with dance and that was my introduction into theater and that allowed me to make that transition. But, my ultimate dream was to be a pilot.

AM: Tell us about your earliest memory as an actor and what was the path for you to decide that this was also something that you wanted to do?

HT: In the 90’s I started to dance and theater and I was doing this intensive acting and I went to this workshop which also had students that included Denzel Washington and Debbie Allen. It was at that moment what I took that class that I realized that I really liked this and I could see myself doing this as a career. But at the same time, I was already a firefighter, so there was already this struggle between being a firefighter and pursuing this career as an actor.

AM: How did you end up being a firefighter as you were Station Chief for the FDNY in Harlem?

HT: So when I was in the Marines, I already started thinking about what I would do when I came out. I took all of the tests, I took police exams, corrections, and I knew nothing about the fire department. There was a flyer in my home from this organization called the Vulcan Society which is an organization of Black Firefighters (editors note: the Vulcan Society was founded in 1940 and is a fraternal organization of black firefighters in NYC). At the time I was coming out of the Marines, out of 10,000 NYC firefighters, less than 2% were African American. The Vulcan Society was active in the inner-city high schools to recruit people of color to the fire department. I came home and I saw that postcard and I filled it out. Like I said, I knew nothing about the fire department, but I filled it out and I started learning about the job and the hours. I was a physical person and I like to get dirty and dusty and all of those type of things. I found out that it was an exciting job and that it was something that I would love to do. At the time, I was a Correction Officer at Sing Sing when they called me and I left that and went to the fire department and never looked back.

AM: Wow! A lot of people talk about the training or you see it when you’re watching shows like FOX’s 9-1-1, its spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star and ABC’s Station 19 which are my favorite first responder shows. Did you find training to be a firefighter difficult?

HT: No ha ha! I guess because I was just out of the Marine Corp and I think that that was the most toughest thing that I had ever experienced physically! So when I went into the firefighter training, it was kind of easy for me. I was a squad leader and I stood out. There was nothing really about the Firefighter Academy that was challenging for me. Like I said, I had just gotten out of the Marine Corps and that was the most challenging thing that I had done. I remember taking the physical and it was a breeze for me and I remember blowing through that. People were like, “oh man, this guy is moving through it!” Being fast, being physical and being strong is part of my attributes and that’s what led me to go towards those kind of jobs.

AM: Were you still acting while you were being a firefighter?

HT: By this time, I was dancing with a dance company ha! So, when I was a correctional officer and a firefighter, I would spend my weekends going to rehearsals for dance and I slowly transitioned that into the theater. So I started doing plays, but I always had my firefighter job and it was one of the reasons that I took it. Not only because of the adrenaline rush, but I knew that as a firefighter, I had a lot of time off and I used that time off to do all of the things that I was passionate about.

AM: In your acting career, you have done a lot of things on the stage and a number of TV shows from NBC's Law & Order to The Blacklist, do you find when you’re preparing for a role for the stage vs. on TV that it is a different process for you?

HT: Yes! I love the theater because you get time to really rehearse, practice and to really live in these spaces. When you're with the people that you’re working with, you get to create and work through the costumes. It’s just a different process that goes into theater that I really love! I love being being on TV too! There is a different way that you have to create and prepare for theater then you do with TV or film. I love that process in theater.

AM: I remember when The Blacklist started that it would be a show that I was going to enjoy. I’m a huge fan of James Spader (Stargate, Secretary, Boston Legal) as well as Amir Arison (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Billions, The Dropout) and Harry Lennix (The Matrix Reloaded, Ray, Billions) that are core and original castmembers with you. There have been so many people that have been guest stars with the show from Stacy Keach (Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Blue Bloods), David Costabile (Breaking Bad, Suits, Billions), Anthony Michael Hall (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, The Goldbergs) the late Lance Reddick (Oz, The Wire, BOSCH), etc. You play Dembe Zuma. How did you find out about the show and what did you know about your character when you read for the part?

HT: I knew nothing! My character wasn’t in the pilot, but that was the only episode that I missed. After the pilot, James requested that he should have a team around him. So initially, I was this Muslim African Freedom Fighter who was rescued by Red from human trafficking as a child. So my audition was all improv. I had no lines so I just made up a backstory that came from my life and experience. It was only supposed to be for 1 episode, so there wasn’t really any pressure or angst about it. Then, it turned into something different than what I had anticipated or even expected! But that was that journey of that process. But it wasn’t like I was initially being brought into a series regular role! But this is where we are after 10 years!

AM: You’re character has such a presence whether it was when he wasn’t talking, or he was a man of few words and now having more evolved storylines, how do you approach your character?

HT: I really draw a lot from personal experiences! I take a lot from my personal life and I put it onto this character. I wouldn’t say that it was easy, but what I have learned especially in not taking the traditional route in acting – the hard thing for me was getting the training and learning how as well as what tools need to be used in order to tell a story. I pull from these experiences that I have had from getting into character and doing all of that, that’s the easy part because I have had such a colorful life. So it was just getting the training and learning about pulling the different emotions and experiences so I could put them into Dembe.

AM: Up until Season 9, we see Dembe and Red and their dynamic and you really create a sense of humanity and a bit of a moral compass for him. What was it like to play off of James Spader?

HT: The interesting thing was, I didn’t know anything about James Spader! Luckily for me I didn’t come in with all of these notions about him so it worked out great. As I started to work with him, that’s when it really became evident to me. He is so intense and that’s when I was like, “oh My God, this guy!” It’s not even that I’m working with James Spader – it was that I am working with this extremely talented human being. You know, our chemistry – we just have it! Anytime we got into a scene, it was like these sparks just flew whether we were improving certain things or reading off the page, we have always had this amazing chemistry. It’s an amazing thing to have and to play off of and I am greatly appreciative of!

AM: In Season 9, your character joins the FBI! What do you think about this twist in the storyline and being able to work in a different way with other members of the cast? We’re assuming that you played off of things in your own life to bring these nuances to life as well for the switch in his character.

HT: Absolutely, it was definitely different especially going from not really speaking that much to downloading the Task Force on who the next Blacklister is so it was definitely a shift. I went out and got myself an acting coach to make sure that I was approaching it right and putting on a whole other layer of Dembe which was challenging but also exciting. I welcomed it and also enjoyed it. A lot of people disagree and say that I should go back with Red! I think that as an actor, it was something that I definitely welcomed and I had fun playing with even though I missed the chemistry that I had with James.

AM: Before we delve into the final season, how do you describe Dembe and what are the similarities between you and the character? Have you been able to give back feedback to the writer’s room in terms of how Dembe develops?

HT: Oh absolutely! I think that in the beginning, because Dembe wasn’t scripted, there was just so much that we didn’t know. It wasn’t until Season 3, 4 or even 5 that I started having conversations with John Bokenkamp (The Call, The Blacklist, The Blacklist: Redemption), the creator of the show and we talked about who is Dembe and what did he look like? We knew he was Muslim and we didn’t get to see any of that so it was really important to me especially since I am Muslim that we make sure that we are authentic about that and that we show that. They agreed. We talked a lot and we had a lot of conversations and we see him praying and doing these things which meant a lot to me. That’s also hard to let go because I’ve been part of building this character and flushing him out as opposed to this character being presented to me. I enjoyed all of that!

Who is Dembe? Dembe because of the evolution of how he came to be, Dembe is kind of me! I kind of consider myself a quiet guy and I think that the only thing that you won’t see Dembe do is that I’m a funny/silly guy! Sometimes we see Red and Dembe have these card games and to play like kids. We see a little bit of that. A lot of Dembe is really me minus the violence.

AM: What can you tell us about the final season or what should we be looking for?

HT: I think that we all know that all The Blacklisters are coming after Red. We also know that because they’re coming after Red and because of Dembe’s affiliation with him, now he is also in danger. It just sets the stakes really really high. I think that what it also does is that Dembe has dealt with conflict, but now he’s really conflicted because of not being with Red in this most dangerous time since he is on the Task Force. I think that what we’re going to see play out in Season 10 is this back and forth of being able to choose a side. At the same time, being this moral compass and what that conflict looks like.

AM: You have been in this cast for the past 10 seasons. What are some of your favorite moments from the show?

HT: I loved when I got to play with Mr. Solomon, Edi Gathegi (Twilight, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, X-Men: First Class) character – I love that episode with the pool balls and getting tortured and going after him. That one stands out. There are so many, but I also loved just because of how I came into acting and all of these people that I looked up to. I loved the time that I got to play with Benga who was in Season 9 – being my daughter and being kidnapped that was an amazing episode for me. I loved the episode where we got to explore my religion and faith not only personally, but also with Dembe. Then there are some amazing episodes in Season 10 that I can’t speak on, but I’m really excited about that. There’s one episode where we have never seen about Dembe. I’m excited to see how that played out. Out of 10 years, there have been so many beautiful moments as you know. But those are some of the moments that I really enjoyed.

AM: What will be your biggest takeaway from being part of this production?

HT: That’s hard, I learned so much watching James and how he works and how specific he is. Just how he approaches everything – that’s something that I will take away from it. Being prepared for the unexpected because this was definitely unexpected. In 10 years, I’ve grown so much, I’m a whole different person and there’s so much growth that I have had. Not just professionally, but also personally. The biggest takeaway in terms of the craft is just seeing how dedicated James was and learning how he approaches it and putting those tools in my pocket as I’m moving forward.

AM: What will we see you doing next? Are there any projects that you’re able to share with us or things on your bucket list whether it’s in front of or behind the camera?

HT: I’m a Sci-Fi geek, so I’d definitely like to do anything Sci-Fi! I love westerns so I would love to be a cowboy, but after a show like this, I’m also in love with doing something that doesn’t have fun and just a drama between me and my son, me and my wife or something like that. Anything and everything! I’ve also been working on a documentary about my life so all of those things, I would love to tackle. That’s the scary thing about not knowing what’s next up for me professionally. Like I said, I would love to be an astronaut in space or riding around on a horse!

THE ARTIST | TYRON WOODLEY

This month's cover is 5X UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley. With an impressive career, we delve into this athlete and artist who got his start wrestling and went on to continue in this sport at the University of Missouri and are a 2x All-American and Big 12 Conference Champion. In addition to the impact that he has created in MMA, he is also an analyst. When he is not in or talking about the Octagon, Tyron has acted in a number of films and movies including Straight Outta Compton, Kickboxer: Vengence and Hawaii Five-0. He has also been involved in stunts in Olympus Has Fallen, Once Upon a Time in Venice and has trained actors such as Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 2.

We talk with him about he got into MMA, his passion for it, his creativity in entertainment, the music industry and more.

ATHLEISURE MAG: My favorite sport is boxing and through that it brought me to enjoying MMA as well. I’ve been a fan of yours for a number of years. What was the moment when you realized that you wanted to be an athlete as I know that in highschool you played football as well as wrestled. What initially drew you to wrestling as you were NCAA Division I collegiate wrestler at the University of Missouri and are a 2X All-American and Big 12 Conference Champion.

TYRON WOODLEY: I mean, just as a kid, I started off just being outside and in a regular neighborhood to play. We didn’t have a ton of funds to go on a billion vacations and trips and all those extracurricular activities and things. So it came down to racing people in the streets first, who was the fastest and who could do the most push-ups. Naturally, when it came to wrestling, I kind of gravitated towards sports that were more economical. For wrestling, you don’t need a lot of stuff for that. It’s very affordable, so I kind of started to do that and I didn’t even notice that I was doing that. I also just enjoy the difficulty of doing stuff and I don’t even know why. Especially growing up as a kid, if there was something that was difficult that I could do, it made me feel a certain kind of way and I liked it.

That’s kind of the journey that I have been towards - I don’t want to say the impossible because other people have done it, but the things that seem to be very difficult and people veer away from it, I go straight to it.

AM: So how did being a wrestler eventually merge to you focusing on being a Mixed Martial Artist?

TW: I mean when I was wrestling, I was doing that and I was also trying to out amateur MMA just to see if I liked it. I’ve always wanted to box, but I felt as if at 23 years old, which was the age that I graduated from college, I felt that I was too old to start boxing. At that age, most people that are successful have started since they were 18 or 19 years old. I felt that with Mixed Martial Arts, I could punch, wrestle and do a couple of other things too. I was giving it a try but what really crossed me over the edge was that I was the #1 wrestling coach for the top fighters. Everybody that had a big fight against wrestlers – The Ultimate Fighter show 1, 2 and 3 and really it brought a shit load of Division 1 level wrestlers into MMA Rashad Evans, Gray Maynard, Josh Koscheck – all of these different guys you’ve seen from that show. The mindset of a wrestler amongst any other martial arts was just so different – it was really kind of meat head and really a bar that was set that nobody had really done to get there. With that mindset, they became really good MMA fighters because of drilling – we drill so many moves thousands of times. We’ll do the same leg and then we’ll do a variation of it and based on his defense we do this and if he does that then we’ll do this. It made it easier because it was a mindset that we use anyway. It’s one of the few sports where we had to cut weight year around which got us ready for MMA and it was natural as I was already doing those things.

AM: When you say MMA, what disciplines are involved in that when you’re fighting and what are you looking to add to your skillset in your journey?

TW: For MMA, Mixed Martial Arts, it’s really any form of martial art excluding fish hooks, head butts, striking of the groin, kicking someone when they’re down. Outside of that, karate, judo, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing – every form of striking, every form of grappling, Sambo – all these different things, there are different places where you can use them in the Octagon. There’s a lot of Greco-Roman wrestling in judo when you’re against the cage in the area that we call “the clinch” – striking out in the open and now you don’t have to just punch – you can punch, kick, slip, roll, knee, elbow – you can pretty much use your entire body minus your forehead to fight.

You have to be up to date on what’s the new techniques, what the new training camps are learning so you know how to prepare, who you’re going against and what they bring to the table. So I just looked at my wrestling background and said, “hey, I’m going to be able to take most of these guys down,” because I’m the head coach of most of the guys that are trying to stop from being taken down. If I spend 85% of my time on striking and you can’t out strike me and you’re supposed to be a striker and you can’t out wrestle me and I can get up and be in good shape, you’re going to have a hard time defeating me. That was my formula for many, many years and it was proven, because I didn’t lose a round and I hardly lost any minutes in any round. It’s basically a game plan that I ended up using and it worked out.

AM: For those that are not familiar, what are the rules of the sport and how is someone designated the winner?

TW: The rule of the sport is that you start to fight on your feet and usually both of the fighters are in their corner and from that position, the referee will tell them that they are ready to fight. Basically, they’ll say, “let’s get it cracking, you guys get it on,” or whatever they say. These referees ref so many fights that they start having a familiar face and people are starting to associate them with their ad lib to start the fight.

You start on your feet and what you see first is mostly striking because that’s what people do when they’re on their feet - punching, kicking, knee and elbow. But anytime people get close enough, it’s allowed to grab the person, slam them down, grapple them, cement a few arm locks, chokes, pressure points or utilize your elbows. You can put somebody in a move that causes someone to submit which means that they don’t want to do that move anymore and they can’t get out of it and they submit to you or give up.

Then there’s scoring. The judges are looking throughout the rounds because sometimes it’s not finished by submission, a knockout or disqualification – they’re looking at who is the aggressor, who’s landing power; who’s persistent, who’s pressing the pace – from there, they will deem who they have seen from that round. Who won that round and then who won the next round – they look at all the rounds and add it up to decide who actually won the fight. It’s kind of confusing because the sport hit by storm and many people were not ready for it. You have to remember that there isn’t a MMA judge! It’s really a boxing commission that are judging these fights. When you look at it that way, some boxing commissioners aren’t even familiar with what they are even looking at because they are not familiar with martial arts. They don’t understand that if I’m a D1 wrestler and I’m All American and a striker and you hook me down, I would weight that more as a bigger deal than if I have to take him down. So that’s the way how I feel that it should be judged, but I’m not trying to be the judge and the fighter at the same time. I just have to let it go as it goes.

AM: That’s an interesting point that you made as I wasn’t thinking about that. Is it difficult for you knowing that as you’re going in that there are judges that aren’t into the details of your sport, but they are literally judging what you’re doing?

TW: Yeah I mean, it’s difficult, but like I told you before, I have been blessed to have some good friends. Lin Oeding (Reacher, Cobra Kai, Warrior), a fighting/stunt coordinator/performer and who is a director now, he kind of gave me his mindset because he’s good at analyzing issues that come up with good solutions. He said, “Tyron, if you train this way (in the formula that I told you), you’re going to be hard to beat.” Luckily for me, even though my background was grappling, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and the last thing that I started to do was striking, I was one of the best strikers and one of the most explosive strikers. I would use the fact that people were so scared of my ability to take them down - that it actually made them tense up a little bit. Then I would be able to sneak in and make it look like I was going to be able to take a shot when they responded to do that by lowering their hands or getting intimidated, then I would just come up and punch them in the face.

AM: You began your career in Strikeforce and you’re a 5 X UFC Welterweight Champion, can you talk about what it means to have such an amazing career of 19 wins you only have 7 losses and a draw – it’s great stats.

TW: For me, it was always to try to be the best. Everybody else wanted to participate or to just get to the UFC or to win a title. Because, when you win a title, no one can ever say that you’re not a champion – you’re a champion. But my goal wasn’t just to win 1 title, it was to be the best. By definition, the best is somebody that gets a title and defends it multiple times and makes it very difficult to be beaten and that was my motivation. I accomplished that and obviously, life has highs and lows sometimes you don’t understand how things go, but it’s not really for us to understand. I just use it as a learning curve to keep getting better and to create my legacy.

AM: What is a normal week like for you when you’re in the gym training. You must be doing the most insane workouts and spending many hours to be where you’re at!

TW: You know, I used to do that when I was younger by spending many, many hours. You need to know if you can do it. You need to see if you’re built for it because what you don’t want to do is to waste their time or to waste your time.

This ain’t a sport where you do all of this hard work and you don’t know if it’s right for you. It’s too hard and there are great chances where you can get hurt. If you find out early in your career that you strike on somebody and they hit you in the face and you didn’t like it, shit maybe it ain’t up for you. If you don’t deal with pressure well, if you’re learning curve isn’t up to par with the growth of the sport, you have to look at yourself and say, “hey, you know what – maybe I should be a coach or I should be alongside it or I should do it for leisure but not put all my ducks in a row.” Some fighters think that just because they decided that they were going to give up the rest of their life towards this that they should be a pro fighter. That’s not how it works.

AM: Can we expect to see you in an upcoming MMA fight and who would you like to fight?

TW: I want to fight big fights. I don’t want to fight any small fights. Right now I feel like, if I beat 5 - 10 super high level guys and get a world title again that don’t mean shit. That’s not going to make me anymore of a great. I had to talk to God about this. I wanted to do that. I wanted to go back and get my belt back - it's the ego. Because, that's not my belt. That’s the current person’s belt, they earned their belt and I lost my belt. They didn’t take my belt, they earned theirs. Once people start thinking about it that way, his blessings are not mine and mine is not his. So, me going back and trying to chase that down – something that I have already done is kind of ego. So I had to check myself and now I just want to fight to make myself happy, to make a lot of money and to make a big fuss and a lot of exposure and a lot of media and buildup and marketing and big endorsements – big exposure and everything is leading me towards another area of martial arts.

AM: How much influence do you have when it comes to setting up matches. Are you able to select or at least propose who you want to go against? How does that process work?

TW: In the UFC, I didn’t really get much of a say so. If I did a couple of favors and I particularly wanted to fight somebody and they felt that it made sense and they could see how that looked good marketing-wise, then it became a yes. It was always if this person that I wanted to fight, made sense for them as well, then we’d do it. If it didn’t, then there was no chance. There were many times when it didn’t make sense for me to fight in my career, that they didn’t care and they wanted that fight to happen. Right now, I’m in a different position. Today, I was offered a fight, my first question was what’s the weight, where’s it at and are we at 7 figures and up?

AM: Ok now.

TW: Yeah why wouldn’t I?

AM: It’s interesting as I’ve always been interested in how these matches come together and it’s great that you’re able to have the ability to set those standards and parameters.

Why were you interested in boxing as you have had 2 fights against Jake Paul and will you continue to box?

TW: Yeah I’m going to continue to box and I was interested in boxing before the Jake Paul fight. I told my manager that I just really wanted to focus on doing all forms of combat and becoming an actual real free agent. Not having to conform to an organization that says that I have to fight at a certain time and I’m not saying that that didn’t benefit me and I don’t have no smoke with UFC. I’m not trying to get time back. I did what I was supposed to do in the time that I was given and I created some mystery so now I’m in a position where I want big fights that excite me and makes me want to walk out there! Because, for the longest, I was doing it to prove people wrong. I felt like at certain points, I was doing it to prove naysayers wrong, the organization wrong, the fighters wrong and the haters wrong. That’s too many people to be doing that with. I’d rather focus on just proving my people right and my coaches right versus all that other stuff.

AM: You’re also an analyst and it’s always good to watch a sport and see someone who comes from it who does it being able to tell you what’s going on. What do you enjoy about being in this role?

TW: I think it’s that people get to see me in a different light. They don’t get to see the quiet or the outspoken because I’m never in between! I feel like when I needed to, I was quiet because people didn’t deserve to really get to know me for who I was because everything was just so fake to me. It was like everything was such a façade and I wasn’t used to that. In St. Louis, it’s all about respect, all about being real and I’m just not used to people doing things that everybody else is doing because it looks cool. That was really corny to me and so at times, I didn’t feel like I fit in. So the analyst desk gave me a way to express myself, to say how I see the sport, make it realistic for someone that has never watched it and just make it fun and make it where it’s a moment that they will remember and tie them into our sport. We need more fans and more supporters and the way to do that, is to tell more people about it. Sometimes, as an analyst, you’re teaching people about MMA and they don’t know about it until you tell them.

AM: Exactly, I live in NY, but am originally from Indiana so I definitely understand the sensibilities of growing up in the Midwest and then when you go outside of it, it’s a different cadence that you have to get used to.

TW: Very interesting, very interesting. If you came from Indiana to NY, you understand exactly what I’m saying. It’s fast paced, no one is really caring about anything you’re saying as they’re focused on what they need to do and in the back of their mind, they’re trying to position themselves and posture. I’m not trying to do that. If you’re cool with me, you’re cool with me – if not, you can slide.

AM: In addition to everything that you’re doing, you’re also an actor and a stuntman. I remember watching you in Straight Outta Compton and I was like, “wait, he’s acting?” I know you’ve done other roles as well, why have you embraced this portion of the entertainment industry in your body of work?

TW: I’m just an artist. I’ve said it to a lot of people and they don’t even realize it. I’m just an artist. I’m not a boxer, I’m not a fighter, I’m not a rapper, I’m not an analyst – I’m an artist. Whatever canvas I have to paint on for that day, I have to do what I have to do. So that’s why I think of it and I separate it. My filter when I had my own TMZ show was different than when I do FOX, is different then when I act. Again in acting, there are a whole lot of different roles – so I do that differently. Music is a different look and it’s just different filters that you use and sensors. Sometimes there’s no filters and it’s very encouraging for you to be 100% yourself. But they all exist because you're an artist.

So, I feel like that we as humans try to box people in because we’re afraid that someone else will want us to be something more. If you’re comfortable being a 5th grade high school teacher, you don’t want somebody out there over doing it making you feel like you need to get down and get into crypto, to build some real estate developments and to look into these areas. There are people that don’t want to do that. So that’s why they allow the 1% to tell them what to do and to tell them what’s cool.

AM: As someone who is an artist, what are some things that you have coming up that you can share as you have your hands in various pots.

TW: I have an EP that I’m working on musically, I have a TV show that I’m writing, executive producing and starring in which is my main focus. I will fight 2 more times this year one time will be boxing and the other will be MMA. I haven’t confirmed it, but if I can get this last fight of the year on NYE, then it will literally turn a lot of heads. I’m just in to doing stuff that’s ground breaking, trailblazing and when people try to tell you that you can’t do something, I’m trying to be a living vessel to show you that you can and to tell everyone else that they can shut up!

AM: How do you take time for yourself when you’re not in the midst of doing all of these projects?

TW: I just started doing that! So I took up golf and I’m just about to go play golf in Hawaii right now! The first time golfing, I was in Hawaii, my second time golfing – I was in Hawaii and now today, I’m taking my son out in the jungle where they filmed parts of Jurassic Park – we’re going to go out there. I like shooting guns and getting a haircut. Like, I’m really into getting a haircut and I don’t know why.

AM: How do you give back to your community and how important is that?

TW: I give back to my community and I would go to schools and talk to them and encourage them and showing them somebody that came up from a similar background or similar complexion could make it. A lot of kids used to message me and said they were from the same area that I grew up in and they wanted to know how I made it out of there. One in particular told me how he was getting bullied to join a gang and he didn’t want to. I was real with him and told him that I joined – it wasn’t because I was scared, but I didn’t want to have to deal with people asking me questions every day like which gang I was in. So, I did it because of that and I told this kid that he shouldn’t do it. He was a freshman in high school when he reached out and now he is a Senior, a kid named Cameron a D1 athlete with a scholarship and he made it out. So, I can do that and inspire others – obviously me going out there and doing well and winning is the best thing that I can do. Unfortunately, people don’t understand that the real life is not about whether you got the most points in regulation or what the judges are saying – it’s about how you live. You’re a champion because of the way that you live not because of the title or the belt, you know what I mean? That’s my thing to go out there and show you better and to tell you.
