LIFE'S PASSION | CURTISS COOK

When you're watching a film or a series, the goal is to be transported and to enjoy an immersive experience that either allows for escapism, conversations with others, or to be introspective. That process can come in many forms whether it's the script, the setting, subject, and in many cases the actor.

There are a number of actors that you know when they are attached to what you're about to watch, your expectations are high that they are going to drive the story. When you have an actor who has played a number of characters in shows and films that you admire, you're always excited to get the chance to know more about them, their process, and how they connect to their work. This month's cover of Athleisure Mag is Curtiss Cook (Mayans FC, Shutter Island, West Side Story) who has played Otis "Douda" Perry in The Chi which you can stream the current Season 6B on Paramount+ with Showtime and On Demand and you can also watch it on Showtime each Sunday.

We wanted to know more about the power of storytelling through the characters that he plays and how that is achieved; what he loves about storytelling, the committment he has to his craft; the success of his role in The Chi; the importance of mental health; and upcoming projects that we can continue to keep an eye out for. In addition, we took advantage of a summer day by heading to Selina Chelsea Hotel for our photoshoot that took place at Creatures at Selina Rooftop and Music For A While listening lounge!

ATHLEISURE MAG: The last time we talked, you were our cover for our DEC ISSUE #72 back in 2021.

CURTISS COOK: Oh wow, Dec ‘21!

AM: We were talking about Season 4 of The Chi, and you guys knew you were already renewed for Season 5, and we were talking about The Devil You Know although you couldn’t tell us about the title at that time or really what it was. But you shared that you were working with Charles Murray (Sons of Anarchy, The Devil You Know, Outer Range), which interestingly enough, he is in this month’s issue!

CC: Are you serious? Oh, I love him!

AM: Yes, we interviewed him for Outer Range.

CC: Outer Range?

AM: Yes it’s a neo-western with Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, Avengers franchise, Dune franchise) on Prime Video. Charles is the Executive Producer and Showrunner of the 2nd season as he took over from the creator for this series. Which is a great show by the way!

CC: Josh Brolin you said?

AM: Yes!

CC: Oh c’mon, you know that’s good!

AM: Oh it’s a great show!

So now, we can go back and talk about The Devil You Know, which we loved!

We thought it was awesome to see the dynamic and the storyline.

CC: It was good right?

AM: Oh, I mean the cast! What was it that you loved about being in that show?

CC: First of all, when I was offered it, the first thing that popped into my mind was that I was trying to remember a movie or television show that dealt with brothers, Black brothers and in a complicated way right? Not just as caricatures of the culture, you know what I mean? They had a mother and a father, so they grew up with both of their parents, you know what I mean? It wasn't a broken home. Now what happens in the movie – we have to sell a movie. But still, the love in which they still cared for each other was amazing, the writing for that script was so on point. But then like you said, when you get a group of cast members like that, it’s like, “wow, that could literally be a TV series!”

AM: That’s what I thought when I watched it.

CC: I mean, if the end didn’t happen and we didn’t prolong certain things, but those brothers being that way and being invited to that party. Because a lot of times, Curtiss doesn’t get invited to those parties. I don’t know why that is. He normally gets invited to the other party. Where he is the only one that is there. When I say that, I mean that he is the only Black face there. He is the only Black person that is there. Which it is what it is. I’m not complaining.

AM: I have been in those doors and know it well!

CC: Yeah, it’s like, why aren’t y’all coming?

AM: Hello again my friend, it’s just me!

CC: It’s just me.

AM: Carrying the torch for everybody and sometimes nobody.

CC: Everyone and sometimes no one. They’re just different right? Sitting with Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Killers of the Flower Moon) is just different then sitting with Charles Murray. It’s not better or worse, it’s just different. So that was immediately what it was. It was about this brotherhood, this family unit and how close knit they were and than when Charles said that it was loosely based on his family, and his brothers and it was like, oh wow, this is an opportunity to represent and to get a peek into our culture in a different way.

I’m pausing because I’m trying to think of different films that dabbled in that area and -

AM: It’s hard to think of one.

CC: I can see friends that you think of them as brothers because they’re so close and they grew up together, but literally being brothers from the same mother and father.

AM: The 5 Heartbeats gave that vibe, but they were not brothers.

CC: Oh I love that movie!

AM: [Sings] Nights like this, I wish raindrops would fall -

CC: Oh man, I love it.

AM: Haha no you’re right. It did feel different and I hadn’t really seen that dynamic and certainly not with 4 brothers.

CC: So it was special and I appreciate being brought to the party. I wish that it did better at the box office, but I find people that stop me and say, “oh my God, I really loved that movie,” and it touches you because it could just as easily be overlooked and forgotten about. Same way about Roxanne Roxanne, people pop up and say, “ oh man, you get on my nerves – you took that woman!” It’s like ok!

AM: I have to say that I liked your character Marcus Edison in The Bold Type. I was a huge fan of that show.

CC: Ok!

AM: It was nice to see you in a different way in that series.

CC: Right, right, right!

AM: Mayans FC, we enjoyed you in that!

We were huge Sons of Anarchy fan so when the spinoff came out, we were ready for Mayans!

What do you love about storytelling?

CC: The exploration of self because a lot of times, I have gone through – well, I am the oldest of 5. My next sibling down from me is 3 years younger then me and it’s a girl. So although Renee and I are close, we weren’t hanging out you know what I mean, that’s my sister. So, a lot of times I found myself by myself so I read a lot. I had a really close friend that I had known since kindergarten, but I read a lot, I watched a lot of TV, and I was absorbing a lot of stories and I lived through things that I saw. I remember growing up saying, “I wonder what I would have done if that was me?” Like incidents that happened in the neighborhood and what not and then in television and movies too – it was always, I wonder what I would have done. So absorbing that, you go to school, and then college and all of that – you get fed more stuff. You get the opportunity to express all of the inner sides of yourself that just stay dormant because there is no way to express that. But then all of a sudden, you come across this character that seems so far from who you are where you say, “you know what? I remember when I was 17 and I was thinking about what if I was the FBI Chief or that I was in charge of the police and this is an opportunity to bring out that 17 year old idea along with all of the new information that I have and bring it together."

So I enjoy that part of exploration to bring along the storytelling and being able to purge certain aspects of myself and I also like the finding of stuff. Sometimes a play or a movie or a television show takes me to a part of the country or a part of the world that I have never been to before. And just by that, you’re exploring and seeing things that you never have before! The Interpreter, we shot in Mozambique and I had never been to the Mother Land and when I tell you Kimmie, that it was eye opening. It was eye opening and I will tell you a quick story about this, but it was a long time ago, but I will never forget this.

I don’t know if you remember The Interpreter, but there is a scene where these young boys come to basically, assassinate my character and another character by someone else. But these young men who did the scene were locals. They were for a lack of a better word, very impoverished – they were poor. So, the costumer, the cast, decided to give them a gift and got them these bikes. They were getting paid for the movie, but just to say thank you, they received these bikes. Dare I say, the next day on set, they came back walking in and everyone was like, why are they walking? We were told that their bikes were stolen, they were taken, they’re gone. We were shocked and then an older gentleman said, “we can’t give gifts like this because it’s taken immediately.” And not even from other children, it’s from grown people coming to take these things.

That was a shock to me and then although the people were poor, it’s not like they were like, “oh help me, help me” they were living and full of life! It was just like, we don’t have these material things, but we know where to eat, we know where to congregate, we know where to worship, and it was life! It was so life affirming to me because sometimes, we can get so caught up in to the stuff and that makes us feel like whatever and you forget that all we need is this, we’re just sitting here talking, having a good time, taking some pictures, and that is what life is about.

AM: I always say that home is where I have a seat at the table. So it doesn’t even have to be in my house. If I feel that we connect and there is a vibe, that is a home. Because everything else it can be up and down.

CC: I agree with that 100%. So that is also what storytelling gives me. It’s an opportunity to meet and see people and have myself to be reminded of certain things like that or to be told certain things like that. When you see something concretely like that in your face, you’re like, “ok I need to make a shift.” So those are some of the things about storytelling that I love, why I love it so much, and sometimes the factor of not knowing how to do it!

Right now, I’m about to fly out to LA for this piece. I haven’t sung in a long time. So honestly, I’m scared, I’m a little like, “boy, you ain’t sung and you’re going where with big people on the stage?” It’s going to be some people there! So it’s not like it’s just us right here where I could just sing for you and y’all are like, go head!” So I’m like, ok Curtiss, I’m thinking in the car driving here and I’m trying to sing a little bit and I’m like, “bro, I don’t know what you’re going to do.”

AM: You have to start stomping that foot -

CC: And get the crowd singing with you! But part of me is like, that’s why you do it, you know what I mean?

AM: Yeah!

CC: You thought that at one point, growing up, that I would be a singer. That’s all I did, that’s all I was being praised for – so it’s there, but let’s see how much of it has morphed into this 57 year old dude now who hasn’t done it in 3-5 years on the stage or whatever. So I enjoy that factor too because it keeps you alive.

AM: If you don’t have that fire, it’s not going to work. You almost have to have that, did I do too much Icarus – ooo not quite.

CC: Haha not quite!

AM: Haha I mean it was close, no one else caught it, but it was giving Icarus for a moment!

CC: I totally agree!

AM: One of the things that I like is that every time I see you in different roles, if your character is like this in The Bold Type, it’s like this when it’s Douda, it’s completely different. Even down to the mannerisms, cadences, they are very separate from each other. That’s more than just getting into a character and doing the words. How do you approach your characters to give them do you approach your characters to give them this seamless and different feel that only your outer skin is the unifying link between them. Because everything else even the walk where it’s like a Denzel Washington (Fallen, Training Day, American Gangster) effect where he can completely be something else.

CC: Wow Kimmie, thank you for saying that. I mean, it makes me feel really good that somebody is even saying that I do that!

AM: I’m very detailed when I’m watching things as there a lot of great actors that do things and it’s like, that’s Joe and he’s doing Joe with the pink hat versus Joe with the orange. But you’re shapeshifting and everything falls away. I’m sitting with you now and it’s one person and I know if I was on set with you and you were about to do a scene as Douda, everything about the vibe and what you’re doing is going to be so different and it’s not the same person. Of course if it’s The Bold Type and I was there, you know that character is not going to do anything to anybody.

CC: For a long time and still to this day, I have always considered myself a character actor. It wasn’t until ’96 or ’97 where a manager who turned into my agent, he told me, “you’re not a character actor, you’re a leading man.” I know he was saying that to say poo poo to character actors, we’re going to focus and go here. But at the time, I was still finding my way in the business right and I was trying to figure out how I was going to move forward and how the industry was going to accept me and how I would find that. So any type of guidance you get from people that is in the business and you feel like, oh, maybe this is what I should be doing right?

So, I tried to take on that moniker of a leading man whatever that was and I started to do that. But, I found myself that whenever a project would come, it wouldn’t be like you said, let me be just Curtiss and let’s bring this thing forward so that everybody can be like, he’s doing this thing now, I had to find out where this person is from, subsequently, a lot of parts bring me to new information. So it’s like, “oh, they’re from Colorado, I’ve never been to Colorado, what’s in Colorado?” So, now I’m reading about Colorado and then I’m finding some obscure history in Colorado where something happened to Black folks, “oh, you know what would really be cool? If this was part of his ancestors and this is what happened to them.” So now I’m going to videos and this was before where things weren’t so easy to just pick up your phone. You had to go to the library and type things in and wherever else to try to find old clips of whatever so you could find out how they sat, how they talked, and whether it was slow or whether it was longer and how much of that can I add without it being a thing and so, that becomes part of the joy. That becomes part of the, “I’ve done this before, I’ve done this already.” Not so much as I don’t want to be seen as the blah, blah, blah, or for me, how do I live in this piece and what makes me have to work?

It's just like the thing that I’m about to do, start listening to music again, start practicing again. All of these things are like if I’m not challenging myself to a place where the goal is something that I have achieved or almost achieved, like the analogy that you just used -

AM: Icarus!

CC: If I don’t have that feeling, quickly I get bored, quickly I’m not serving the project, quickly I’ll not assist my other cast members and creators, because my energy will I’ll just kind of be there and I’m not having fun. So as I’m finding these things about certain things and I’m trying to bring it from the feet all the way to the tippy top of the head, like you said, I’ll miss the mark, I’ll be general, and I know what I’m going for. But then there will be that one moment where it’s like, boom! I did it! Like you said, nobody else might have known that I you said, nobody else might have known that I did it, but Kimmie might!

AM: I’ll know!

CC: Everyone else will be like, “ok, let’s move on.” But I can sit there knowing that I did that, I couldn’t do that 3 mins ago or weeks ago, but now I can! They’re like, “ok Curtiss! Good now move onto the next thing.” The fact that you’re even acknowledging that and saying that, it means a lot. I think that a lot of that comes from stage right?

AM: Right!

CC: Because we’re given the opportunity to play things that are out of our vessels out of our capacity. Especially as you’re younger, you’re playing my age people. I remember thinking that once I got to the city that I am going to play everything! And it’s like, no not in television/film – at 23. There used to be a breakdown from 23-50 and really they wanted someone in their 40s and I was 27 years old and I thought that I could do this! It’s like, sit down and I was like, “no, no I know how to do this!” And you just don’t know right? You don’t know what you don’t know.

AM: Age is seasoning.

CC: Oh my God! Sometimes through osmosis and sometimes through the wacks of being knocked down and you realize, that that was a good lesson, I guess. It’s going to be useful for something.

AM: It’s something at some point.

CC: Something at some point.

AM: We’re in Season 6B right now of The Chi.

We just saw last week’s episode over the weekend. Do you watch episodes as they come out?

CC: So the 6th season was broken up into two sections. One of the blessings that I had and it was not on purpose, was the strike because the strike allowed me to see the first half before we started the filming the 2nd half. So it gave me a new perspective on this character, for the season and how it was being told. I watched all of those, but I have not watched any of the 6B yet. I know what happens, but I don’t know what they edited, how it is cut together, I did some ADR (Editor’s Note: Audio Dialogue Replacement is the process of recording dialogue in a studio after filming to replace the initially recorded lines on set) for a portion of the scenes so I know those scenes in mind. How it comes together, I do not know. Other stuff, I wait. I may not watch it immediately I wait. I have not seen any of the House of Cards!

AM: Oh I loved your character in that!

CC: Everyone says that it’s so good! My wife watches everything! My wife watched ev-er-y-thing! She’ll watch and say, “yeah, you may not want to watch this one.”

AM: Haha! I loved House of Cards.

CC: But to your question, I have not watched the episodes in 6B.

AM: Well, what’s interesting is, because you have not watched this episode, and we watched it with baited breath, obviously it is Douda’s season. Everything is coming to a head, everyone is figuring out and in this episode you can see all the lives that he has integrated with and how it’s not real ly working out for people and you’re not in this episode per se, but only for a small 5 second period of a throwback from 6A. Just your character’s presence of walking down the aisle at the funeral of Papa (Shamon Brown Jr), as a viewer, you’re like, there he is! Then if you’re watching on Showtime, they have The Chi Tea with actors from the episode, and right after they did a segment on The Villains with you about Douda. It was about 7 or 8 minutes.

CC: I’m talking too?

AM: Yup, you’re talking too! So we have you sitting in the chair talking about the character and then other members of the cast talking about the character, and it’s just this beautiful juxtaposition of you talking about your character while other people are talking about it. What does it mean to you to be on this show? When we talked last time we were in Season 4 and you were hoping your character would still be around. You’re still around, hunted and wanted!

CC: It means a lot of different things. The Chi owes me nothing. It owes Curtiss as the man nothing and it owes Curtiss as the actor nothing. The Chi gave me my first series regular role where it wasn’t like I just popped into the scene out of nowhere. I had been beating the ground for years, hoping and praying and getting close and having pilots picked up and then not go anywhere. Here comes this other show and I get this opportunity. Dare I say that the 6B season that I was in and able to do, I was given the opportunity to really ask, pseudo demand, an input in who and what this guy does and how he does it.

AM: Nice.

CC: Under the guise of here is the script, right? You know what I mean, I wasn’t changing things saying no – no – no.

AM: Haha he’s not doing this anymore, he’s Olympus now!

CC: Haha right! It wasn’t that, it was more like, ok I need help trying to understand this is what y’all are saying and if it is this, I need this infused in there to help. Please let me do this and it wasn’t like, “ok sure” because of the hierarchy of things, dare I say that on the day and again, I don’t know what has been aired, but on the day, my contribution was heard and allowed to be executed with the caveat of let’s also do this other thing.

AM: For pickups just in case.

CC: I respect that! They’re not in charge, there are other people that are involved as well. So your question was The Chi, I would be disingenuous to say that the show that I joined is not the show that I am leaving. But I also understand that there aren’t many shows that stay the same from when they first started either.

There’s this phrase in the business called “jumping the shark” and I think it came from Happy Days when The Fonz (Henry Winkler) has these skis and it jumped over the shark (Editor’s Note: The phrase was coined in 1985 by radio personality Jon Hein in response to a 1977 episode from the 5th season of Happy Days when Fonzie jumps over a live shark while on water-skis) and it was like, what the hell is this? I understand the nature of the beast and that certain things happen blah, blah, blah. The way that the story is going and leading, I am happy for how it develops. I’m very grateful and very happy on where it develops.

AM: What do you want viewers to know about Douda because it’s not that he’s a one sided character. We’ve seen him as a Mayoral candidate that won, we saw him as an owner of the pizzeria, and yes, he also does all of these other things as well. He tried to find love and we see he's very multidimensional that can’t be written off as just one thing. How do you want viewers to be able to look at him?

CC: I would love for him to be able to say, “you know what, I wouldn’t have done that, but I kind of understand why he went there, but maybe I wouldn’t have done it that way. But I get it.” I would hate for it to just be some stuff that just makes no sense. I always argue for – I don’t mind him being a villain. I don’t mind him being downright evil, disgusting, whatever, but with a cause!

AM: Right.

CC: A purpose. The thing that I love about him thus far is, that even when he asked Emmett (Jacob Latimore) to get in the business and he let him know that he wanted to get in business with him. Emmett maybe didn’t have a choice, but to say yes, but he did ask! He didn’t say, “I’m going to get into business with you, goodbye.” He did ask and Emmett decided to do it. But even in that time, he gave Emmett everything he said he was going to give Emmett. So when Emmett decides that he no longer wants to be with him anymore, it’s kind of like in Douda’s world, but why? It’s not like he gave all of this stuff and then he’s coming in there and he’s taking your wife too, and I’m going to come in here and sleep in your bed, and burn your house down and put you in a shackle and I’m going to give you $5 while I take it. It wasn’t that at all! He did the business.

AM: It’s a balance sheet.

CC: It’s a balance sheet and you’re getting paid on top of it too! You’re not being asked to go out there and shoot these kids? You’re not being asked to do nothing out of sort, it’s just do what you have been doing and you will be paid. Dare I say that anything he asks of anybody, be it Tracy (Tai Davis), be it Roselyn (Kandi Burruss), be it whoever, he’s like, my word is my bond. If he is going to do it, he is going to do it. That’s what I love about it. He’s not a villain for villain’s sake, it’s not messing up stuff and whatever.

AM: It’s measured.

CC: It’s measured.

AM: You knew already before you jumped in there.

CC: You knew who Jimmy was when you first met Jimmy!

So that’s what I like and I also like that from the actor’s point of view, we got to see him as the bad guy, a business man, to oh my God wait a minute, he’s a pizza guy, but he has a mob. Then oh my God, he’s running for office, oh my God he’s smart too he defunded the police which is what the community needs – he cares about the people, oh he started the center with Tracy and he’s in love with this woman too and now it’s like, oh my God, this brother needs to go! What the hell? As an actor, I got to do all of that with just one character in 1 hour over 5 seasons!

AM: That’s a lot!

CC: That’s why I say, The Chi owes me nothing! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be able to show that and that’s what I hope people take away. Oh no no no, this guy came in here and he gave us a 3D, interesting, complicated, individual who at the end, he made us hate him! Because before we didn’t, we didn’t want to, it was growing and not because all of a sudden he was doing the crazy stuff, it was just the ongoing elements.

AM: The cast this season is, and it has always been, amazing. Just looking at this season, Lynn Whitfield (A Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Eve’s Bayou, Greenleaf), Leon Robinson (The Five Heartbeats, City on a Hill, Waiting to Exhale), Iman Shumpert (Them, Twenties, Under His Influence), so many different people. What have been some of your favorite moments of the season as you look back or even across the series?

CC: There have been a few of them. When you asked me, I know the first one that popped up in my mind, Carl Lumbly (The Falcon and the Winter Solider, The Fall of the House of Usher, Doctor Sleep), he played the old man and that was Douda’s mentor. He was in prison and he gave him his name. I have loved this guys work from years and years and years and to have the opportunity to sit across from him in a scene really touched my soul. That was a moment.

I mean Lynn Whitfield, you kind of look at her in the face and it’s like, “oh my God, you’re Lynn Whitfield!”

AM: Every time she’s on screen, it’s a moment. It’s like Diahann Carroll (The Colbys, Dynasty, White Collar) walking in.

CC: Right? She is – she’s the essence of! So that’s amazing. Steven Williams (X-Files, The Leftovers, Birds of Prey) who played Q. Even watching, listening, and talking to him, we would hang out afterwards and just hearing his stories and hearing him talk about Cooley High and 21 Jump Street and you just kind of look and of course, subsequently, I get to work with Glynn Turman (A Different World, Men of Honor, Percy Jackson and The Olympians) from The Devil You Know who played the father, because he was also Cooley High with Steven and putting that together because they’re friends, so those have been some memorable moments for me from the top of my head that I never thought that I would have the opportunity to, grace the screen, with and talk to and those are the first 3 that come to mind.

Then the other cast members that are there too are cool in different ways. The Jacob Latimore (Ride Along, Collateral Beauty, Like A Boss) of it all, the Yolanda Ross (Antwone Fisher, American Gigolo series, How to Get Away with Murder) of it all, Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton, Keanu, Zola) that got into some trouble, and even little Alex R. Hibbert (Moonlight, Code Switch, Black Panther) who plays Kevin, Michael Epps (Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Primary Position), and Shamon Brown Jr (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Chicago Fire) and so is Tai Davis (Save the Last Dance, Chicago Med, Empire) who plays Tracy. You know what I mean? It’s really kind of cool to mix and mingle and have real conversations. Kandi, I never thought (Real Housewives of Atlanta, SWV & XSCAPE!

AM: When I see her on screen, I don’t see her as a multi-platinum artist and phenomenal songwriter that has written for so many people across genres or even of being one of the Real Housewives of Atlanta. So when the two of you are on screen together it’s a believable dynamic where you can burn the houses down!

CC: Mmm hmm oh yeah.

AM: I was hooked on the show from the first episode. Part of it being I’m from the Midwest, I’m from Indianapolis so seeing something that is from Chicago that’s amazing. But how the show presents a cast of characters across a wide array of socioeconomics as opposed to all of these people live in a ghetto or all of the characters are on this tract. It’s the mix and the hybridity of it all. The topics that are covered and mental health from last season, and this season, and especially as it pertains and applies to the Black community as some of us do and some of us don’t. How important is it for viewers to understand that these are major takeaways that we can not only watch and enjoy, but to bring them back into our communities and enjoy, and into our communities for whatever our socioeconomic status is?

CC: It’s majorly important that we bring those things in and not be afraid to and to try to erase the stigma that is attached to going to therapy. I am an individual who, and I just started talking about it this season, and I found myself by accident talking about it if I’m totally honest. I battle inside myself because I’m saying, “just say it” and then I don’t want to just say it because I don’t want to put it out into the world. But then I think, “remember when you were just watching something and you found out that someone did something –“ you know what I mean?

AM: Yes.

CC: Ok, so it normalized it in such a way that I could see it. I don’t liken myself to someone else that’s whatever, but it could be a 7 year old, a 19 year old or whatever that can look at a man that’s on TV. So during the process, I used to have my ex-wife and I, we used to go to marriage counseling and that was my first introduction to a therapist. Being able to sit down and for the most part being there as a mediator so that we could hear each other. Subsequently, that marriage didn’t work out, but what did work out was that our communication was better and we found out that maybe this isn’t the union – she has a new husband, I have a new wife, we have 3 children.

So that was my first introduction to it. Over the course of acting, after the pandemic of course, that put a mirror onto a lot of different people and shined a light on a lot of things that made us wonder or let us know we weren’t as fluid as we thought we were, or as succinct in our daily living as we thought that we were because it was just stripped away so quickly right?

AM: Right.

CC: So what do we do now? So that was a factor and then at the same time, my 2 youngest children, the 20 year olds, they were leaving the house. So my wife and I became empty nesters for the first time and that was also like – what do we do?

AM: Yeah it a cadence shift.

CC: So am I supposed to – I mean we used to get them up at 7am to get them out of the house and now there is nobody to get out and -

AM: You’re just looking at each other ha!

CC: Ok!

AM: Haha you’re still here!

CC: Right like you too? So there was a moment where I’m trying to figure out the day-to-day and then I had the show to do and I have this character like we just talked about who likes to go to a deeper and deeper dark side, and that’s not who or what I really am. But I’m starting to find out that people are starting to associate Curtiss with this guy and sometimes I would meet people and they would be a little held back or hostile for whatever reason and that started to play a certain way in my mind. It pushed me to a certain place and I’m by myself and so I reintroduced myself to therapy. Dare I say that the show starts to do this as well? That’s really interesting to me. I honestly wish that there was a place in which – I mean, you know there was a time when Douda said to a news reporter and remember, he goes away in one season and just disappears and then he comes back and the woman says where were you and he literally says that he left and he got therapy.

AM: That was the 4th season because when we were talking and I said that I hoped that you would come back for Season 5 it was because of him leaving abruptly in the 4th.

CC: Yes and I wish that there was a point where we showed him trying to deal with some of his demons, why they happened, and whatever else, but that is a different show. But I’m glad that they did start this men’s circle and the only caveat that I would add to that is that I do feel that there needs to be a professional in those surroundings.

AM: Exactly.

CC: Because the purpose of it is to trust and totally trust that whatever you are speaking stays in that space and some skills to actually deal with what you are doing to try to break down the issue, the feelings, and all of the anxiety that you may be having too so there are some actual physical and mental activities that you can do to have that and to have somebody that is there that understands that to say that maybe this is something that you could try right? I think that that is also important. I think baby steps, you can’t do everything in one show and within that amount of time.

AM: Maybe for the show purpose if you think about it, the culture, as Black people, were not raised to bring in outside people in and to have these conversations so the very idea of doing what they’re doing is many steps beyond how we have been brought to think. If I told my mom I do breathwork or meditation, there would be a thought or a question in terms of why am I not praying or leaning on scripture when you can do all 3 as one doesn’t diminish another.

I agree with you as the first time I saw it, I thought that they should have a professional, but would those guys ask someone?

CC: I see that for the first time, but now some of the issues that they are dealing with, you can’t be in the group and say, “we need to kill Douda!”

AM: Oop that’s right you can’t do that!

CC: What is the group for now? Are y’all a gang, what are y’all about to do?

AM: It’s a tar and feather session right now haha! Yeah, you’re right I take it back!

CC: Yeah, that’s not what we’re talking about here, let’s keep all that out of this space, it’s a safe space. I think that if there was a professional there, they would say, “maybe that’s good, but maybe we should also think about how everyone is oppressed.” But once again, baby steps! Like what you said, the fact that we can see it and be like, “hey, maybe we can talk to my friend or my brother and just – we have to be careful with who we allow to see our inner most selves sometimes because even some loved ones have the best intentions but their actions may not show it in the ways that we need it at that time.

AM: What do you feel in terms of the mental health elements or components or things that you feel that you need in order to keep accountable? What do you do for yourself?

CC: There’s a lot. I have an emotional support animal named Bolo and that’s one thing. Because he keeps me accountable and whenever I get anxious or feel anxiety, he comes over and puts his big head on my leg and he makes me focus on him so that I can pet him and immediately, my blood pressure kind of goes down and my heart slows down and then I’m ok! I workout because I enjoy the endorphins that you get from that and the feeling of accomplishment. I live up in the mountains so I’m able to walk around and see nature a lot which is really good. I used to meditate a lot, I don’t do it anymore only because I don’t really have a real reason why I don’t. But I haven’t in a very long time, but I do find myself doing walks with him in the mountains and I make sure that I don’t bring my cellphone, I don’t bring my Apple Watch and I’m totally disconnected so I just say, “please Jesus don’t let anything happen to me because nobody is going to come for a couple of days and I have no communication!”

AM: Do you watch Hacks on Max?

CC: No, I do not.

AM: There was just an episode and it stars Jean Smart (Designing Women, Watchmen series, Mayor of Easttown) and she asks her writer to go on a walk although she suggested the King of Prussia because they were waiting to go back on QVC, they ended up out in the forest. They lose the writer’s phone in the river, Jean falls and hurts herself and she doesn’t have a phone because she wants to keep clean lines in her pockets so they wander in the wilderness until they find good Samaritans that take them back to their car! Jean reminds her that if they had walked in the mall, this wouldn’t have happened and it was a whole thing – but yeah!

CC: I love Jean Smart.

But yeah, that’s the active things that I do, but a lot of it is also that I haven’t started back up with my therapy and he just actually emailed me yesterday saying, “hey, are you good? Just checking in to make sure that you’re good.” I let him know that I was. I definitely will get back in touch with him and start talking with him because I think that because things are going to start shifting with me again I can feel myself sometimes getting to a place of spiraling down and I will just sit, my mother also suffered with depression and so I will literally put a cover over my head until I get to a point where I’m like, “you have to get up, you can’t stay here like this.” I will have to fight myself to just get up and just do something. But those are some of the things that I try to make sure that I focus on.

The thing that I do a lot is that I am a truth teller. What happens is, if you don’t know me or whatever, you don’t know that I’m telling you the truth. I’ll say it dead out – it may sound like a joke, or I’ll say it whatever. But now my wife, she’s able to pick up on it sometimes and she’s good at letting it pass for the day or two and then she’s like, “so, I’m going to find it,” you know what I mean? She’ll do something and then I’ll say, “yeah, maybe we do need to discuss what’s going on.”

AM: I get that! I’m an avoidant type. I don’t like to talk about myself and I’m more focused on being a fixer type. But when I get really quiet Paul will ask me if I’m good and I’ll say yes; however, he will keep asking because he knows something is off and that’s when the breakdown happens as I’m not someone who’s a crier or shows emotions per se, but you have to know me because if you don’t you will assume everything is ok. Part of that comes from the culture of how I was raised, having parents who were executives who gave me great tools to navigate and equip me for the world in terms of business, but those same tools applied in terms of how I internalize and utilize them personally are not great due to how I internalize things – so I need him to give me that nudge or alert that I have to examine what’s happening and not just say, “yeah this happened it’s fine or it’s ok” when in fact it is not.

CC: Wow, that’s beautiful that you have found this out, you know what I mean? The ability to acknowledge that and to access those feelings and for you to have the ability to feel comfortable and say, “we’re not going to be able to fix it, but we can just talk about it and you can feel better.”

AM: 100%.

Will we see you creating a foundation as mental health has been something that you have been talking about this season. Do you foresee yourself having a foundation, organization, or initiative for this?

CC: If you’re asking me this second, no I cannot. But you know, it’s one of those things that your calling is your calling and you can’t avoid it. I don’t right now. I have a lot more work to do with my acting career I think. There’s a place that I would like to be and I am not there yet, and I know that I am going to be there and I know that I have the wherewithal to do the work. It’s just the matter of time and the only way that I can access the time is to make sure that this is fine and this fine, so maybe those things will meet in the future and maybe this foundation or organization at some point will help me to get to the time.

AM: What are some upcoming projects that you have coming up! We know you have the show coming up and I hope that it’ll be streamed somewhere so that I can see it!

CC: Haha yeah! The next big thing is that I did this movie where the working title is Carry On and it stars myself, it stars Taron Egerton (Legend, Blackbird, Kingsman franchise), it stars Jason Bateman (Arrested Development, The Outsider, Ozark), it stars Danielle Deadwyler (P-Valley, Station Eleven, Till), and Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop, Jungle Cruise, Retribution) directed it. A big project that he did was Black Adam, but this is produced by Steven Spielberg’s (Jaws, Jurassic Park franchise, Indiana Jones franchise) company, Amblin Entertainment and Netflix. So it’s called Carry On and we shot it awhile back in New Orleans and it’s a thriller and it’s about the TSA and what happens at airports and when some incidents happen. So that’s the next big thing that's kinda going on and of course, next week I will be in LA for awhile.

AM: What do you want your legacy to be whether it’s in the industry or as a man?

CC: I mean, that’s not really up to me right? I mean, -

AM: At some point, it kind of is. Because what you leave behind is what’s remembered.

CC: Yeah hopefully, you left it behind, but no one is remembering that! “Well you know that one time, he stepped on my foot –“

AM: And he owed me $5!

CC: And he owed me $5 and he stepped on my foot haha – is that what you want to say man?

As far as in the industry right? I know that this is going to happen right and I’m not trying to be arrogant about it, but I want to be known as one of those people who when you say, and I’m saying it right now to a reporter for the record, when you say great actors, “oh man, you have Sidney Poitier (To Sir With Love, In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner), Denzel Washington,” and I want you to say Curtiss Cook.

AM: You know what I was going to tell you earlier, that there are things you do that remind me of Sidney Portier with his career. There are nuances, but you are still your own person.

CC: Oh come on!

At the end, I wanted it to be because of the body of work, the type of the work, the commitment to the work, nothing against James Earl Jones (Coming to America franchise, The Lion King, Field of Dreams), nothing against Laurence Fishburne (Matrix franchise, Clipped, Megalopolis), nothing against Samuel Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Glass, Avengers franchise), nothing against Don Cheadle (House of Lies, Crash, Avengers franchise), we can go on and on about people that do amazing things – Forest Whitaker (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Black Panther, Godfather of Harlem) – you know what I mean?

AM: Yup!

CC: There are loads of folks where you’re like yeah!

AM: But then there’s a craft!

CC: Yes, a craft and a je ne sais quoi that not everybody possesses and it’s sometimes you work to get it, or you’re born with it and you know how to use it right? I’m still at the process of finding out who and what this vessel is because it’s going to sound as crazy as hell, but I don’t know, I’m feeling comfortable – I never thought that I was a handsome dude. I remember growing up, I never thought that I was ugly, I never thought that I was handsome like people saying, “oh yeah, he’s nice – never.” So, whatever got me into the spaces and rooms for girlfriends or whatever, it was always me being silly, or funny, or charming, or whatever. They’d say, “oh, he’s so funny, you know what? He’s kind of cute too come on over here Curtiss." And I was like yeah! But now, as I’m getting older or whatever, I’m hearing more and feeling more this attention of ooo wow! Honestly, 70% of myself is like, I don’t believe you, but I’m going to let you say it and I’m going to move on for whatever whatever. So that goes back to the, “oh, you said that you wanted this thing back in Jr High School and now it’s come into fruition.” Whatever is happening, and whatever they are seeing, maybe it’s an inner/outer thing, maybe it’s your nose grew into your forehead or something, or the proportions on me, maybe the teeth came in right, but I don’t know – today is good!” So I think that it’s part of it right for the 2 people that I named. You look at them and you go, ok. If you look at them too hard, you say, “I don’t know if they are the most handsomest people in the whole wide world, but when you put it all together, you’re like, there is a thing about them.”

AM: It’s a presence and I think that’s what got me for the end of the 5 seconds of last week’s The Chi episode because it was a bit of that Poitier moment where all the things come together. You didn’t say anything, it was a montage of other things, but it was the only camera time that you had in that episode and yet because everyone is talking about how are we going to get this man, there he is!

PAUL FARKAS: Honestly, it was almost like Jack Nicholson (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, A Few Good Men, The Departed) because of your eyes! It was very brief, only like 3 seconds.

AM: All episode it was like, we’ve been hearing his name, but we haven’t seen him and it was pretty impactful and then the Villains feature ran after that.

CC: Yeah, that’s part of it and hopefully that people will say, “when I met him, he was a cool person. He was a cool dude and he wasn’t trying to be nothing that he ain’t.” I’ve worked with Mark Ruffalo (I Know This Much is True, Avengers franchise, Poor Things).

AM: That’s another one whether he’s the Hulk or he’s the attorney in Dark Waters fighting environmental pollution, or his role in Poor Things you get immersed into who he’s playing.

CC: Mark is a beast! But what you leave with when you think of him is what people will say about him, that he’s just a cool dude. You know what I mean? You meet him and he’s not trying to be cool or doing whatever. I hope that that is what they also say. When you’re young, you burn bridges that you don’t necessarily need to, but you don’t understand it –

AM: You don’t think it matters.

CC: Right. I just make sure that I come in, I’m prepared, ready, honest, open, and nice! Literally nice. It’s ok to be nice, it’s ok to say good morning and hi, it’s ok!

AM: A lot of that also comes from being in the Midwest.

CC: Ok, but hopefully those are 2 things that I can think of in addition to being a good dad and all of that.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us about Life Hospitality, who are the founders/owners, and when this group launched.

FULL LIFE HOSPITALITY: Full Life Hospitality is behind some of the most sought-after venues in New York City, including Virgo, Make Believe, Music For A While, and Creatures at Selina Rooftop. With each venue, we're pushing the boundaries and evolving our concepts to provide truly incredible experiences every time guests walk into one of our venues. Each one of the founders—James O’Hanlon, Thatcher Schultz, Andy McDonald, and Duncan Abdelnour—brings a wealth of experience and passion for hospitality. AM: When did Creatures launch?

FLH: Creatures at Selina Rooftop opened in July of 2023. We've taken the time during the winter months to renovate the space extensively. We're thrilled to announce that the newly renovated pool will be opening at the end of June, offering guests an enhanced rooftop experience just in time for summer.

AM: Tell us about the vibe and ambiance of Creatures in terms of the design and what guests can expect when they enter.

FLH: Creatures offers a chic and relaxed atmosphere with a bohemian-inspired design. Guests can expect an inviting space adorned with lush greenery, comfortable seating, and vibrant décor. The rooftop setting provides stunning views of the Chelsea skyline, creating a perfect backdrop for socializing and enjoying crafted cocktails and delicious food.

AM: What are 3 appetizers that you suggest at Creatures that we should try?

FLH: Our House Hummus, topped with tomato seeds, schug, tahini, and served with pita bread, is a must-try. The Spicy Picanha Skewer with charred peas and mint puree offers a surprising and delightful bite. Lastly, the Branzino Crudo with blood orange, mint olive oil, and labneh cheese provides bright and bold flavors that are refreshingly perfect for a warm summer’s day.

AM: What are 3 mains that we should try with friends and family?

FLH: Choosing just three favorites is tough because Chef Neil Strauber's menu is thoughtfully crafted with inspiration from the Levant Region, infusing each dish with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. The Fish Schnitzel Tacos are a must-try, drizzled with spicy labneh and topped with Israeli salad in pita tacos. The Grilled Top Sirloin Cap, grilled to perfection in our open air kitchen, features Chef’s signature mint pistachio chimichurri and tomato seeds. Finally, the Wild-Caught Shrimp with harissa and tomato-sage butter is so flavorful that you'll fight for the last bite.

AM: What are 3 desserts we should try?

FLH: This dessert, crafted by Chef Neil Strauber, is an absolute must-try. The Cheesecake is incredibly light and airy, whipped to perfection and balanced with a delightful crumble for texture. The fresh strawberries add a burst of sweetness and color, making this dessert delicious and visually stunning. Pairing it with an Espresso Martini creates the ultimate end to a perfect meal, combining the richness of espresso with the creamy delight of the cheesecake.

AM: In terms of cocktails, what are 3 signature drinks that we should have in mind?

FLH: Our Lemon Drop Spritz is the epitome of summer in a glass, with zesty lemon notes and an effervescent spritz that cools you down on a hot NYC day. The Hibiskiss blends mezcal, lemon, house-made hibiscus and ginger syrups, mint, and ginger beer, offering a refreshing taste that whisks you away to a tropical oasis. Lastly, Daisy’s Painkiller combines dark rum, orange, pineapple, coconut, and nutmeg for a sweet retreat reminiscent of a Caribbean island, perfect for those scorching summer days. AM: Now that we are in the summer months, do you have Summer Friday specials?

AM: Tell us about your Happy Hour.

AM: 4th of July is around the corner, what do you have in store that we should know about?

FLH: We’re so excited to celebrate the 4th of July with our friends. Follow us at @creaturesselinarooftop for announcements about our plans, which include drinks, bites, and a killer lineup to dance all day and night long.

AM: Will Creatures do anything for PRIDE?

FLH: Yes, we’re thrilled to host a party for PRIDE. It will begin at 2pm on Sunday, June 30th. We’ll also be launching our weekly party called Creatures @ Sunset this Sunday, June 2nd, at 2pm - Welcoming everyone in the LGBTQ+ community to dance with us into the night.

AM: Creatures is open Wed – Sunday, will additional days be added?

FLH: While we are currently open from Wednesday to Sunday, we are exploring the possibility of adding additional days during the summer months. We will be testing out Salsa on the roof next Tuesday! Stay tuned for more details!

FLH: MFAW continues to thrive with some great lineups and upcoming residencies featuring local vinyl DJs from New York City. Our Vinyl Happy Hour from 9 PM-11 PM is designed to attract new customers who might not have experienced a record bar before. And who can resist a $10 Dirty Martini to kick off the night?

AM: Can you talk about the design aesthetic of the space? What are upcoming events taking place here that we should know about whether for 4th of July or other days during the summer?

FLH: Upcoming events include a 4th of Julycelebration, weekend parties, summer brunches, Salsa Tuesdays, happy hour parties and dinner parties. Keep an eye on our social media channels and website for the latest updates on events.

HOLIDAYS, HEALTH, + HAPPINESS WITH LA LA ANTHONY

We always enjoy when we have the opportunity to catch up with STARZ’s BMF and Showtime’s The Chi star, La La Anthony! We love when we see her in a number of projects whether it’s in TV, film, as an entrepreneur and more! With the holiday season that’s known for a number of events as well as taking that time to think about how you are stepping into the New Year, we wanted to catch up with her to see about how she navigates this business season personally and professionally!

LLA: So, I grew up in a Hispanic household. Both of my parents are from Puerto Rico, so it has Spanish, Latin, Puerto Rican flavor in there. So, it’s however my mom taught me, what seasoning to use, how to mix it up – it has that kind of flavor to it, which is why I love it so much and it’s easy. Because if you follow the steps, I feel that anyone can do it, because if I can do it, anyone can do it, because I don’t know how to cook at all, so it’s literally like, if I follow it and she tells me what it is start to finish, the result is going to be good! It definitely has Latin flavors like Sazon to it. So you know it’s going to be good!  

AM: Definitely checking it out as the other night I enjoyed having Avgolemono (Greek Lemon Chicken Soup), which I thought was amazing and I had never had it before. So this, sounds like another winner to me even if I’m not sick because I do love Chicken Soup!

LLA: Oh no, that’s the same with me! It’s just my go-to for holiday seasons in general. I don’t know, there’s something about eating something that you had growing up that makes you feel nostalgic, like holiday, and home. So, it kind of for me, brings all of that out for me.

AM: There are a number of traditions that we enjoy as well as those that we make as we go along. What are some of your favorites during this holiday season?

LLA: So for me, I grew up and always had tons of people in my house. It was my whole family, that’s how it has always been. So I have continued that tradition so now in my home, Thanksgiving just passed, I had 30-35 family members – it might have been more now that I think about it. 35 family members in my house, which my house ain’t even big enough to fit 35 people! So we were all just cramped in there and we’ve always been like that. Just playing games, music, laughing, and fun. We just had a great time and the same thing with Christmas, it’s just continuing that family gathering and having everyone together and taking a break from their crazy lives, work, and everything that they have going on. So, it’s always been like that. It’s nice to be in a place where I can continue that same holiday tradition.

AM: Well, this season means that we do tons of different activities whether it’s with our colleagues at work, friends, and family. What’s the best way that we can keep it cute and fresh when we’re doing all of these different things?

LLA: Stay healthy! That’s how you keep it cute and fresh! The holidays are when people get sick, so stay healthy so that you can be outside and that you can enjoy these social events and gatherings. It’s fun being outside and doing the Christmas parties, the NYE parties, it’s fun. You get to be social, you get to meet people, and you don’t want to miss out on that stuff because you’re not feeling well. Stay on top of your health, stay on top of you’re A-game. Another reason why this partnership was important to me is because I want to be my best, and I want Kiyan to be his best so that he can be great at everything that he is doing.  

AM: What are you thinking of in terms of gifting friends and family this year? What are things that we should also be thinking about for our holiday lists?  

LLA: So candles to me are always great! Like, candles are easy, but they are so symbolic and they have so much meaning. You can get candles that are engraved, you can get candles that say a quote or a scripture on it, whatever your preference is. But, I think that that’s like a not too expensive gift that it’s intimate and it feels thoughtful. That’s always my go-to. Like, who doesn’t want a beautiful candle?

It’s not something that you’ll ever have enough of. You’re not going to be like, “oh, I’m at my candle limit!” There’s no such thing.

AM: Especially those that are in those big jars!

LLA: Oh yeah, I love! Those are really pretty.

AM: Well, you’re an amazing mom, a great actress, and you’re always putting your name and intention behind great things! It’s always great when I have the ability to be able to interview you and to see all the things that you continue to do. I know that with you, it’s always going to be excellence.

LLA: I really appreciate you saying that, thank you so much!

VACATION VIBES | LA LA ANTHONY

It's always fun to touch base with those that we have interviewed previously. La La Anthony is a woman who is always on the go, whether she's on our favorite shows The Chi, POWER and Black Mafia Family. She's always fresh off of wrapping a project and in plans for the next one. In addition, she has always been an entrepreneur and earlier this year, she launched her hair care line, INALA which focuses on strengthening and providing our follicles much needed nutrients.

We caught up with her to talk about these projects as well as as how she tries to find those moments where she can recharge! She looped us in on what we should keep an eye out for, finding balance and how she enjoys vacation vibes year around!

ATHLEISURE MAG: We have always been a fan of your projects whether it’s The Chi, POWER and obviously more recently, Black Mafia Family.

LA LA ANTHONY: Oh thank you!

AM: We can’t wait to see the upcoming season. What made you decide that you wanted to be part of the show and what do you love about playing your character, Markaisha Taylor?

LLA: You know, I love Black Mafia Family because it’s a true story which just gives it a different depth and different layers! I knew about them and I had heard about them – Meech and Terry, so now being able to be part of their story is just so incredible! Obviously, 50 Cent is the producer who also produced POWER so, I always you know love working with 50 and he’s also one of my closest friends. So that was 2 of the main reasons that I wanted to be on-board and the character will really get introduced in the 2nd season and you’ll really see a lot of her and the relationships that develop over time. I think that people are really going to be into it.

AM: Is there anything that you can tell us about the upcoming season or will we need to wait until September?

LLA: You definitely have to wait! These things stay super under wraps! But we did finish filming so now things are just being edited and I think that it’s going to be an incredible season and I think that people are just going to be really excited for it.

AM: Since you are always involved in so many things, are there other TV or film projects that you have going on that we need to keep an eye out for?

LLA: I have a Netflix movie coming out with Gabrielle Union and that should be out at the top of the year. I also have a Netflix movie with Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Nia Long that’s coming out probably around the top of the year. Kenya Barris directed that one. There are some projects in the can that will start coming out and that’s always exciting when you can start off the new year with some new projects and things like that!

AM: Absolutely and with such amazing names and great casts for both of those.

Earlier this year, you launched INALA. Why did you create this line and what does the name mean?

LLA: INALA is my real name backwards – my real name is Alani so it’s a cool spin on that. It was something that was important to me because I worked on it when we were spending a lot of time at home during the pandemic. I really experimented a lot with rice water and saw amazing benefits to my hair when I was making the rice water at home. I was like, how can I bring this to people out there and really help with hair growth, hair strength, edges and all of that stuff. Especially with people who wear wigs, weaves, braids and protective styles all the time that we do to save and preserve our hair. I worked with some experts and came up with INALA and the Power Potion has been amazing and the results have been great. We have the Reset Rinse and now we’re working on just launching some new products because everything has been so great and people have been loving the results and have been really happy about everything.

AM: I think rice water is amazing and I have been a long time skincare fan of Japanese and Korean Beauty skin products that use this in it. So what is the benefit of using rice water as it pertains to hair?

LLA: It’s just known to help with strengthening hair. It’s known to help with hair growth, keeping hair to have a luscious glow to it – it’s literally like I say that rice water is just magic! The rice grain itself contains all of these nutrients that are essential for all this that I’m talking about. So what we did is put ours along with the 100% rice complex. It has biotin in it and different vitamins and minerals that really boost your hair growth and hair strength. The results have been crazy! When you see before and after pictures and people start talking about their experience with the products, it’s been really amazing.

AM: Because you have your hand in a number of pots, how do you take advantage of the summer and take time for yourself?

LLA: That’s something that I’m still working on. Because I am so busy and I do need to find that balance so it’s something I’m working on. You know, I have a trip coming up with my son soon and it’s just going to be him and I. It’ll be a couple of days where he and I will be able to be off the grid and to have some fun with him. I’m really looking forward to that. I did tell myself that in August and in some of September, I do want to do a bit more traveling mostly with my son and kind of just disconnect from work for a little while. You know, I was on BMF and as soon as it wrapped, I did an independent film called Water Boys and just finished that so I haven’t had so much downtime at all. So, I really feel like it’s important to have a healthy balance!

AM: You partnered again with Baileys and helped them with the National Colada day which was on July 10th. How can we continue to celebrate that and what did you do to enjoy all the amazingness that is the Colada?

LLA: Well see, I don’t take a lot of vacations! So what I love about Baileys Colada is that it gives you vacation vibes wherever you’re at. It’s just one of those things that when you taste it, in your mind, you’re on a beautiful island somewhere or laying up doing absolutely nothing. I think that that’s how we’re able to continue celebrate it no matter where you are or what you’re doing. You can bring the beach vibes and the vacation vibes to you by having it for sure!

AM: What were your inspirations behind the cocktails that you created?

LLA: I love the versatility of them and it was based on my Puerto Rican roots which I love. The Piña Colada which a lot of people don’t know this, the Piña Colada originated in Puerto Rico, so it all kind of went hand in hand, so when I came to them with the idea, they loved it and were so receptive that I definitely wanted to bring my roots into it. So we came up with the 3 cocktails and I feel like it’s a nod to my culture, my heritage and it’s just really cool to be able to bring all of that together.

IT'S ALL JUST STORY | RODNEY BARNES

This year when the NBA unveiled their 75th Anniversary Team of retired and active players, it included 17 members who played for the Lakers which includes the Showtime era of the 70/80s with players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson. To understand the importance of this era and what it did to how we enjoy the game, and how it moved the game forward in terms of commerce and making players brand, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty illustrates the dynamics at play.

We talked with Rodney Barnes, who has written for STARZ Heels, STARZ American Gods, Everybody Hates Chris and more. He shares how he got into the industry, the positions he has held, his approach to his work, being the Executive Producer and writer for Winning Time, Zombie Love Studios and his passion for comic books and graphic novels.

ATHLEISURE MAG: You’ve worked in various positions in the entertainment industry as a Production Assistant, showrunner, Executive Producer and an award-winning screenwriter. With all of these roles, what was the moment that you realized that you wanted to work in this industry?

RODNEY BARNES: I was going to Howard University and I was in the School of C (Howard University Cathy Hughs School of Communication) and I was working at Georgetown Law Center as a campus cop at night and I found out that the movie The Pelican Brief was coming to my job to film some scenes. So I was really excited because it’s one thing to go to school for this and it’s another thing to actually be able to see it up close. So I signed up for all of the overtime details and I got them all. I started watching the movie being put together and it was so exciting! So I met a guy and he was the PA, he was a Key Set PA. So I asked him how I could get a job doing what he did. He said that that weekend, they had some big scenes that were taking place at the Washington Monument and that if I wanted to come and do it for a day, they'd be happy to have me.

So I did it and it was the most exciting, fun and best $100 that I ever made in my entire life! It was something about it that felt right. I felt more purpose in doing that and being close to this thing that I wanted to be close to then I did doing anything else that paid a lot better. I quit my job at Georgetown and started working as a PA full time.

AM: What a story, we always tell people that we embrace the multi-hyphenate. As someone who has worked in a number of roles and continues to do so from writing and producing, when did you know that you wanted to take on these areas and what the specific area was that you wanted to start in first? Or was there just a confluence that took place to make all of this come together?

RB: I knew I wanted to be a writer, but I knew what I didn’t know. I knew that I didn’t understand how any of this worked and I had a very fundamental understanding of what writing was and telling stories. Quite frankly, emotionally and psychologically, I wasn’t mature enough or evolved enough to be able to take on the big job. So, working as a PA, I look at it as being an apprentice. I had an opportunity to meet people, to sort of find my tribe, to figure out the psychology of how it would work and to just get my legs under me which was a bit like bootcamp. It was always writing, but I had to build up to the idea of being able to take my shot at it because it just felt too big.

AM: What do you think was the biggest thing that you learned from being a PA that has helped you with your career or was it just being able to see all the parts that were moving and to be able to understand how they connect?

RB: There was that. I think that the thing for me was that I always had this idea that everybody in Hollywood must be a genius and I haven’t met a genius yet. But, what I have met are some folks that have worked really really hard at their craft. It sort of demystified the entire process for me in being able to see it up close and to be able to observe. I wouldn’t say that I was a vital part although I know that some people would disagree. It was sort of the type of thing where getting to know people as friends and mentors even though that’s a problematic word as no one put their arm around me and said, “son this is what you do.” But they allowed me to be in their circle and to be able to see how the sausage is made. I got an opportunity to be able to just see things up close and to decide whether or not I could do it, if I wanted to do it and the closer I got to the thing that I wanted, the better that things got for me, but I wouldn’t have been able to do any of it if I hadn’t been a PA.

AM: From a screenwriting aspect, you have written a number of things. I loved your work in American Gods which I loved that show and obviously Winning Time and then you look at shows like Everybody Hates Chris. How do you get inspiration to write and then where do you start from when you’re trying to put words to paper to create these worlds for us?

RB: I never looked at it from a place of inspiration because if I need the emotional investment to do it, then I’m not going to be inspired some of those days and I’m still going to have to do it. For me, the difference was, approaching every day like I’m at work which was no different then when I was at Walmart or Target or any of those places that I worked at along the way. I had to get up, I had to work, I didn’t feel like it and then somewhere midday or so, it got a little bit better and then a little bit better. I sort of approach writing in the same way. I have a lot of resistance on the days that I don’t feel like doing it, but it needs to be done because I have a deadline. 78% of the time, I’m able to be disciplined and I’m able to get it done and the other times, I might go to the movies, sit and watch a game or do something else when I’m supposed to be writing. But I think it’s more of a discipline of doing the thing than an emotional component to it. There are days where I feel it and if I'm writing something like a horror driven thing like in my graphic novels, I'm enjoying it a great deal so it’s easier to do, but whether I feel it or I don’t feel it or am some place in between, I still do it.

AM: Just to circle back to American Gods, one of my minors in college was Classical Civilization so it covered mythologies of the world in addition to Greece and Rome and included African and Asian nations. So when I watched it, I loved seeing all of these stories that came to life. What was it like writing for that?

RB: It was great! The best thing that came out of it was my relationship with Orlando Jones (Sleepy Hollow, American Gods, The Good Lord Bird) who played Anansi/Mr. Nancy on our show. I had a similar thing as you, I didn’t do it in college but I studied a lot of different types of mythology and some of these characters like Anansi and Bilquis and others, you don’t really get to hear a lot about them. Because of comic books, you get Thor and Zeus, Odin and Hercules and those guys but oftentimes, Gods of color don’t get a lot of love. Even when they do, it’s in secondary roles. Working for American Gods and I’m a huge Neil Gaiman fan. So to be able to play in that sort of world and get some genre credits under my name was great as I have a comic book company and I also tell a lot of genre driven stories so being able to legitimize that beyond wanting to do it was always something that I wanted to do.

AM: It was such a phenomenal series. I remember seeing the episodes and being able to see some of these characters that I had read about being brought to life so fully, it kept me glued and it was truly incredible.

So as a screenwriter, what is that process like in terms of getting attached to a project and how does one pitch themselves to get into this work?

RB: Well my agents do a lot of my pitching. They typically open doors, but I’d say that about 75% of the work that I get, outside of the things that I create, really comes from via word of mouth. Right now it’s a good time because of Winning Time and people seemingly are enjoying it and you get a lot of offers to do things because they like it which I am grateful for and it is a blessing. More often than not, it’s about putting yourself in the right position you know? People know that I write graphic books and comic books so whenever a project like that comes around and it seems like they can use a writer like me, oftentimes, they’ll call or not so much now because I have been doing it for awhile but maybe 7 or 8 years ago, if it was something that I had heard about that was coming down the pike, I would tell my agents to keep an eye out on it and then see if maybe they could get me up there to be considered.

AM: Is it a different flow for you when you’re writing for the BET Awards or the Oscars – is there a different approach because it’s a live audience or a different format then just a show or even the comic books?

RB: Not really, I look at all of it like it’s story whether it’s writing a joke, Chris Rock or one of his specials or whoever I’m working for for the Oscars or an awards show. Even a joke is a story. It has a beginning, a middle and an end. Whether I’m telling a funny story or a horrifying story or a dramatic story, at the end of the day, it’s all a story. So, I approach it all the same way. The biggest thing for me is really understanding who’s going to be interpreting the words. Like, I work a lot with Chris Rock, and I know him really, really well so if I’m going to pitch something to him, I incorporate that knowledge into the pitch. Like, I can sort of filter myself and know that he wouldn’t like this or he would really like that part. In writing the shows, I have built a great relationship with a lot of our cast and so, I try to write to their strengths as well as to the story that I am trying to tell. When I am saying that I’m writing to their strengths, I'm talking dialogue. There is a cadence to how people talk and if you can make it easier for them to interpret the words, I think that they become more comfortable with it so it's really more so about having familiarity with it for the task at hand.

AM: Also in your body of work, you have been a co-producer and a producer in shows like Heels, Winning Time and Wu-Tang: An American Saga. We’ve had a number of WWE wrestlers as our cover and shared their stories so seeing Heels was another show that we enjoyed. When did you realize that you wanted to add these roles into your body of work and how does that change your perspective especially when you're also writing the show as well?

RB: Well it’s funny, those titles of producing can mean a lot of different things. Earlier in my career, say on My Wife and Kids, when I was a producer, it wasn’t really a lot more to do than sitting in a room and writing. It’s sort of like the government, government jobs they have G-1, G-2 as you work up and it’s sort of like that in television in writing as well. If you do it long enough, you start out as a staff writer and then you move up to a story editor and then an executive story editor and then you go up through the WGA (Writers Guild of America) classifications that go with moving up. But then, in certain gigs like in Everybody Hates Chris, I was in the writer’s room and wrote a number of episodes, but I also produced the voiceover that you would hear in every show. So I would write the lines and go with Chris Rock and go record the lines together and then I would place them in the show in editing. So, to me that was actually the beginning of actually producing and so on different shows, that idea of what a producer means is something different.

On Winning Time, I actually work with the actors whether it’s working on set with their lines, working with the director to see whether or not a shot is sort of lining up with how we saw it when we were writing the show – it can mean a lot of different things. There are some shows where I have been an EP and it didn't mean anything more than just writing a show and putting it together or on some shows I'm actually tangibly doing something different. On American Gods, I wrote and also worked on the set with the actors and the director as well and putting it all together. On Heels, not so much. Marvel's Runaways – not so much. But it’s different with each one, so it’s a classification that comes with being a TV writer and as the responsibilities go, it has more to do with what that show requires.

AM: When I first heard about Winning Time last fall, I knew I was going to love it, I remember as a kid in 1986 loving this team even though I grew up in Indiana and it continues even though I live in NY now. So seeing this story, hearing about this story and getting this inside scoop of what was going on has made it really enjoyable to watch. How did you get attached to this project and what made you want to be involved?

RB: Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island, Worth, Godzilla vs Kong) who is our showrunner and the other Executive Producer as well, he and I have been writing together for about 10 years and when Jim Hecht (Fairly OddParents, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild) first optioned the book, he got the book to Adam McKay (Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Vice, Don’t Look Up), and he got it to HBO and they said they would do a pilot I believe, I don’t know if the project was picked up then. They hired Max, Max called me and I said yes that I would want to be a part of it. That’s how it started.

AM: It’s an incredible cast and I love McKay films and the people that are in it. In terms of writing this where you had Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s, how much source material did you have as I know players of that time as well as the franchise didn’t reach out to you on this. How did you coalesce these things all together to create this story and to provide that insider feel?

RB: Well we were really fortunate that book. So we studied a lot of books and Rick Fox, former Laker was our technical advisor, we talked to a lot of folks who were around the team at that time who worked for the organization, YouTube – we did a lot of research everywhere – articles anything that we could find. We sort of incorporated into the narrative and some stuff we had to tie in together for dramatization purposes.

AM: Obviously with the people that were involved, John C Reilly (Gangs of New York, The Aviator, Anchorman II: The Legend Continues), Jason Clarke (Brotherhood, Chappaquiddick, Silk Road), Rob Morgan (Stranger Things, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Don’t Look Up), Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother, Dispatches from Elsewhere, Hotel Artemis) and Adrien Brody (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Peaky Blinders, Succession) etc, there are actors in there where there is a lot of secret sauce. You have actors who were athletic but didn’t play basketball and having to do so for this role, having Quincy Isaiah play such a key and iconic person who was new to this platform, how did all of this come together to get that energy, to make an audience believe that these people who be playing this game even though they didn’t necessarily have this background?

RB: Francine Maisler (Uncut Gems, Being the Ricardos, Dune) is our casting director and she did a great job finding folks. Sometimes you get lucky like in the case of Quincy who is from Michigan and was an athlete – a football player. He had to lose 80lbs or so to come down to being able to have a Magic Johnson-like look. Solomon Hughes who plays, Kareem Adbul-Jabbar is an educator, is 7-feet tall, plays jazz and he played basketball on a professional level before. You just get lucky sometimes. I think that that’s across the board in finding people that not only have the talent but also the emotional stuff.

If you think about our players, they have to learn how to play the game because some had never played the game before, they had to be convincing to learn how to play a particular way that their character played, they had to go through physical training everyday and then they had to learn their lines and then they had to act. So there would be times when they would have to come from training, be on set, leave their work, leave set and go and play basketball everyday for however long – for a year or so. Then there is the training that went into it before hand and always having a good attitude about it as they were going. We got really really fortunate to find the folks that we found.

AM: When did you realize that you were going to be Maurice?

RB: I’ll tell you when I was working, Max was working on a movie called Worth in NY that’s on Netflix now. I was working on the first season of Wu-Tang: An American Saga. I was in Staten Island, he was in Manhattan. We would meet on the weekends and we would go over it with Jim Hecht and Rebecca Bertuch (Worth) and we would work on putting the show together. Every now and then, this name would pop up, Maurice, Maurice, Maurice – like who the hell is Maurice? Oh, you’re going to see and it was like an inside joke. They knew that I didn’t know. When we were officially on board and we started in the writer’s room in LA, we had all the pictures up of the actors on the wall and then there was a picture of me. I was like, “why is my picture on the wall?” They said, you’re going to play Maurice and I was like, “oh, ok – haha Maurice.” So Max actually wrote Maurice’s lines and the only scene that I had at one time was the scene with Pat Reily where I don’t let him in The Forum. I thought, “ok, I can do that, I’ve been a security guard my whole damn life!” I know how to say you can’t come in. You don’t even need to even write out the lines just let me stand there and I know how to not let you in some place. Then, all of a sudden, I started seeing Maurice pop up in other scripts! He's like a leprechaun where he sort of shows up in different places and I'm like, "why am I popping up?” and then I had a walk and talk which is very difficult as an actor because you have to walk, you have to think and you have to move which was in episode 5 where I had that scene. I was nervous about that scene. Actually, I messed up the scene that is on. I messed up a line but Gabby Hoffman (High Maintenance, Girls, Transparent) who plays Claire Rothman is so great, you would never know because she kept going and I kept going and so that was it and they cut and we went on with the day – but I messed up.

It's cool, the network likes it, everyone likes him and I think that Maurice is going to come back and probably say more words.

AM: We always like when he pops up!

RB: Well, thank you! As long as I stay big and relatively menacing and intimidating, Maurice will probably be around.

AM: What has been your biggest takeaway of being part of this particular project, seeing it come together and the reception of people loving this?

RB: Anytime you work hard at a thing for a long time that is intended to entertain people, you always want that to land the way it is intended so that people are entertained. I think that we’ve got a great reception and that people really seem to like it and it’s sort of gratifying because I and a lot of people give a lot when you do these sort of things and it’s not easily assembled. For me certainly being able to talk about African American culture as it pertains to sports in a way that is sort of elevated is always an honor. It’s a good thing.

AM: Well, you guys have been greenlit for a second season. What does that look like, what do you want to tackle – will it continue with these same players or will it be another part of Laker history or even another time in NBA history for a Winning Time situation?

RB: As of the moment, the plan is to continue on in the same narrative and to just keep telling the story as we have been. Even now, when we first started the process before, we were going in the third or fourth iteration of what you see on screen now – we were going to go a lot faster. Then, the decision was made during COVID to slow down the process of storytelling and we had to go back to the drawing board a couple of times to slow it down. I say all of that to say that you never know. We could speed up a couple of seasons, we can keep going the way that it is, but I think that the plan for now is to continue going in the direction that it is.

AM: One of the things that I enjoy especially with a lot of the HBO shows is that there is a companion podcast and literally, I can’t wait until Mon to listen to the show which drops right after the episode airs on Sun. I listen to JB Smoove and then I listen to your podcast. It’s great to get your insights, what’s going on – the Rob Morgan episode was really great to hear. Every episode is great as there are so many tidbits that can be enjoyed. How did you get attached to hosting this podcast and how much input do you have over who ends up being on the episode with you?

RB: Very similar to how I became Maurice. Somebody thought that it would be a good idea to have me do it and my first reaction was, I have never done a podcast before and they were like, “oh you can do it.” I think that I tried to back out a couple of times and they were like no just give it a shot. I think that I got better as time went on which is sort of the course of life, the more you do it, the better you get at the thing that you do. But, it also helps that I know everybody. Everybody that I have had on so far whether it was Snoop Dogg, Rob Morgan or Quincy, or Max or whoever, I know them. It’s like having a conversation with someone who is a friend and not so much like talking to someone who is a stranger.

They always ask me who I would like to have on and I try to spread it around between the cast members, but also the people behind the scenes. I had Todd Banhazl (Janelle Monae: Dirty Computer, They Call Me Magic, Hustlers), I had Max, I had Jim Hecht, Rebecca, I had Sarah Scott (Pam & Tommy, The Offer, The Flight Attendant) our intimacy coordinator. I had Idan Ravin whose the basketball coordinator. I had our director Salli Richardson (The Chi, Altered Carbon, The Wheel of Time) and Tanya Hamilton (Big Sky, The Deuce, Snowfall). I try to mix it up where you have one of the cast members and then someone who is a technical part of the team so that for people who are interested in being part of the business as one time I was, you can actually hear some of what they do and realize that there are a number of jobs besides the big 4 or 5 at producer, director, writer. There are a lot of other things to be done and some things may spark to someone and hopefully that podcast can help a little bit.

AM: We love seeing the birth of the NBA as we know it today as this entertainment platform with next level dancers, club lounges and had this came together with Dr. Buss. This has become the standard for what it means to go to a NBA game. Being able to hear more about Jack McKinney and his time with the Lakers. I knew he was a coach for the Pacers, but I didn’t know about his backstory. What is it that you want audiences to walk away with after watching this season or subsequent seasons?

RB: Always with our show, we have what you know and the thing that you can Google and find out. Who won the game, who lost the game and those types of things. But there’s also those things that you didn’t know. Like in the case of Jack McKinney, a lot of people had forgotten not just him, but the accident that he was in – the basketball accident and how that changed the course of the Lakers coaching dynamic. So, being able to tell some of those stories and show the Shakespearean dynamic of the coaching system with Paul West head and Pat Riley, most people know Pat Riley being the Lakers coach and they sort of identify with just him, but there were other guys too.

I think that the other side of that coin is Spencer Haywood who was a big part of NBA free agency and a lot of how we look at basketball today in the fact that we can look at James Harden and see him go from team to team to team or LeBron just being able to go to the Heat and all of that – a lot of that has to do with Spencer Haywood and going to court to battle for free agency rights for players. When I was growing up watching the NBA, I’m from Maryland so we had the Bullets, now the Wizards. Usually if a player got drafted, he played with one team for his entire career. It was big news when a player would move from one team to another.

Now, when you look at the change and the evolution both in the style of play when you look at the Showtime offense of Jack McKinney that evolved and to Spencer Haywood’s contribution, that you see in these 2 gentleman, it has a lot to do with the way that the game is played and it’s rarely recognized over the course of history. Anytime we can incorporate things that folks don’t know, it’s always a treat!

AM: Usually, when an episode concludes, we’re usually Googling about 4 things! It becomes a great way to understand how far the game has come in really such a short period of time and how things are so different and the shoulders that people stood on to get to where we are now.

RB: Exactly.

AM: Where did your love for comic books come from. You have Killadelphia that you’re writing, Marvel, Star Wars universes and Lucas Film Studios – where did this come from?

RB: The only inciting influence that I can find in my mind and my heart was that my mother was a school teacher. Before computers and all of that stuff, she would go to the public library to do her lesson plans and she would bring me. There was always this area where you would have kids like in a pen, your Cat in the Hat, Curious George books etc. I had no interest in any of those books because under those books was a box and in that box was comic books. I knew exactly where it was and I don’t think that they ever changed them in all the years that I went. I would just sit in the corner and read them for hours. It sort of became a thing where it was infectious you know? The moral throughline and some of the stories were more evolved than what my 5 or 6 year old mind could handle but I was intrigued by that idea. Then later, people would give them to me and my grandfather would call them funny books back then. They would give me a stack of them and it was a way to keep me quiet. Later on, when I would have odd jobs, I would buy them. This was during a period of time where you could get comic books anywhere – the convenience store, liquor store, virtually any place that had a spinner rack full of comics. Now, you have to go to a comic shop on Wed to get them. But back then, they were readily available and they were only 20 cents or a quarter. Now they’re $4 if not more.

It was just a love that just evolved along with my life. In the beginning, it was mostly about the art and the story. Then in my teen and later years, there were guys like Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing) and Grant Morrison (Doom Patrol, New X-Men, Fantastic Four 1234) and Frank Miller (Daredevil, The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City), they sort of made it like literature and evolved into something that was more serious and that kept me involved and then later television and film like most people. So there has always been this relationship.

When I was younger, I tried to write comics professionally, but couldn’t find a way in. Like a lot of things that I’m sure people feel with television and film, it’s a tough nut to crack. But even more so back then, there weren’t a whole lot of African American characters and there wasn’t a big indie space when I was coming up. It was just Marvel and DC and every once in a while there’d be a new company that would pop in. They didn’t have the same distribution chain as DC so you were relegated to those 10 characters maybe if there were 10. I think that a lot of times, companies back then felt like unless you were writing for a character of color, what’s the point of hiring this person? So for me, I wanted to take a shot at writing a comic so when I was on the show Runaways which was a Marvel show, they liked my work and I sort of leveraged the appreciation of my work to say, “hey if you guys have any relationship with Marvel Publishing, I’d love to write a comic book.” They gave me Falcon. I quickly realized that I had no idea what the hell I was doing or how to write a comic book. I just took my shot. It was received ok-ish. Then again like the podcast, I kept doing it again and again and again and I got better and better and better at it and then I had the idea for Killadelphia and started a whole new thing. Now I write 10 books a month and I have my own company and it’s taken on a life all of it’s own.

AM: Which is amazing and I know in looking at your IG, you were talking about The Mandalorian which I’m a fan of. You have a project coming out in June – can you tell us more?

RB: Yes, it’s June the 22nd, The Mandalorian adaptation of the TV show and it’s the first adaptation that Marvel and Lucas Film have done with a project. It’s basically straight adaptation of that story. They don’t let you deviate too far from the story because it’s Star Wars cannon and you can’t really interfere or add new things because it’s connected to the television show. So I basically do my version of the television show would be.

AM: It’s still very cool though!

RB: Yes, it’s an honor to play in that space.

I just finished IG-88 Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters and I did Lando Double or Nothing earlier. I love to play in the space. I have a Luke Cage short that’s coming up and maybe a Luke Cage miniseries coming up for Marvel. So anytime you get to play in that space, it’s always fun because it’s such a big fan base that you get to connect with that many people is always an honor.

AM: You created Zombie Love Studio which deals with creating original graphic novels and things of that nature, what are some things coming out of there that you want to highlight?

RB: The first book is Blacula, a reboot of the Blacula character from Blaxploitation era in Oct/Nov which should be dropping then. I also have another book, Florence and Normandie and alien attack story that takes place on the corner of Florence and Normandie famous because of the Rodney King riots that started from there. I’m writing that with Xzibit. I have Tales from the Crip with Snoop Dogg which is the Crip Keeper. I have a book called Crownsville which is set in one of the first black mental asylums in America that’s a ghost story.

There's a bunch of other things that we’re developing that are moving along. There aren’t enough hours in the day, but I’m really excited about it all and it’s coming together slowly but surely.

AM: The depth of what you’ve done is truly phenomenal. What are things on your bucket list that you have yet to do or areas that you want to put into that body of work that you haven’t but that you’re still interested in tackling.

RB: Well certainly, developing the Zombie Love books and Killadelphia and things like that into my Substack page where I do 4 of the books. 3 that are connected to the Killadelphia world which is the book that I do at Image. There are 3 books that I do at Image, Killadelphia, Nita Hawes’ Nightmare Blog and Monarch an alien attack miniseries that I am doing. My Substack page has 3 other series, Johnny Gatlin who is a gun slinger in hell and hell is like the Wild West. 20 Degrees Past Rigor which is a zombie story set in Flint, Michigan where zombies are connected to the polluted waters of Flint. The Butcher of Black Bottom which is a serial killer story set in 1920’s Black Bottom section of Detroit. Then there’s Elysium Gardens which is in the back of Killadelphia which has an ongoing story on a Substack page. So, there are those books as well. There’s a lot of stuff and next, I hope to adopt a lot of those things into other forms of media whether it’s animated, live action or television or those kinds of things.

AM: Because you have so many projects that are just in constant rotation, how do you deal with the overlap? Do you have to be at a certain point before you take other things on – do you slice it up like a pizza and mix it the best that you can?

RB: Ha! That’s basically it. I try to tackle each thing as the day comes at me. I usually get up at 4 in the morning and then I start writing and I get the comic book stuff done in the morning. Then I tackle my day jobs like Winning Time or anything else that I have in front of me and I take it as the day comes. Whoever is yelling the most that is owed the thing to them – so yeah! Whoever’s voice is the loudest at the moment!

AM: I think that the time that we’re living in right now, although there is still a need for a lot more representation, to think of myself now versus the younger me who wouldn’t have thought to know that there would be an Ava Du Vernay (A Wrinkle in Time, Queen Sugar, Girls Trip), yourself, Shonda Rhimes (Bridgerton, Inventing Anna, Grey’s Anatomy) all these people that are moving storytelling forward. How important is it for you to reflect that in your work and to have POC be able to see themselves as well as for others to understand why they need to be an ally and to make these spaces more open?

RB: Well I think it’s important because the world doesn’t connect in the same way anymore like physically. We don’t talk to each other the way that we used to and it wasn’t perfect back then either. It’s more important than ever to be able to tell stories that have a ring of truth or some semblance of honesty. That way you get to see people as they are good, bad and indifferent more so than as a caricature or something that feels contrived in some way. I think that a lot of the biases that we hold with each other comes from those depictions. I know since 1619, a concerted effort was made speaking directly to African American culture to make us less than human. There’s one idea of being less than human, but you have to reinforce that on a regular basis. So you either make them caricatures or villains – one extreme or the other. If that idea has the ability to sort of ferment for 400 years or more then you’re at a place where it almost becomes truth because you’re so used to seeing that be the case.

So when you have this culture that is fighting for a slice of the pie or some semblance for respect and dignity, living in a culture and you’re sort of burdened by living with that depiction. It's really a hard thing to overcome because then even the culture itself starts to believe it – is this who I am and some people do. That can be problematic in its own way because you start to devalue yourself and people who look like you.

So I think that the more folks that can get in for various gender, sexual orientation, race or whatever it may be – to be able to speak to your truth in an honest way cannot only help you and the group that you’re in but also people outside of that group so that they have a better understanding of who you are and the struggle that you navigate just to be a human being and to have a human experience.

AM: Who are 3 people that you feel were profound, instrumental or helpful to be in your career?

RB: Damon Wayans (My Wife and Kids, Lethal Weapon, Major Payne) is always first! He was the first person that gave me an opportunity to work on a television show. Were it not for him, I wouldn’t be here. Don Reo (Everybody Hates Chris, Two and a Half Men, The Ranch) who was the showrunner and creator with Damon on My Wife and Kids. He helped take whatever raw ability I had and allowed me into a space in a way that pushed me to a space where I was able to see for myself what I had to do. I’m eternally grateful to him as well. I have to say that there is a tie for number 3 Allen Hughes (Dead Presidents, Menace II Society, The Book of Eli) of the Hughes Brothers, a director. He helped me to bridge art and commerce. He gave me an opportunity to write in a different type of way and helped me find my way of doing art. He was very supportive in that. Then, Max Borenstein who is our showrunner on Winning Time who sort of did the same thing but in a different way. There’s a push sometimes that you need to get out of where you have been to where you want to be and Max was very helpful in being able to push me. Beyond him pushing me, was me pushing me as well. There are a lot of other people and if you had given me 10 or 20, I could have continued on with other people who have helped me even if it was just survival – that’s important as well. So when it comes to writing and being a professional writer, those people come to mind.

ACTING CHOSE ME WITH CURTISS COOK

This month, our DEC ISSUE #72 is covered by Curtiss Cook who has appeared in a number of films that we enjoy including Shutter Island, Netflix's Roxanne Roxanne, and West Side Story to name a few. In addition to commanding the big screen and his work on stage, he has been in countless TV shows as well. He brings a dynamic force to his characters in Netflix's House of Cards and Manifest, NBC's Chicago Med, FX Mayans M.C. and Showtime's The Chi.

We talk with Curtiss about how he got into acting and how he approaches his characters. We also talk about the recent film West Side Story and we're keeping our fingers crossed that we will continue to see him as Douda in the critically acclaimed series The Chi and what led him to this role. We also talk about work behind the camera as well as his work in the upcoming QCODE podcast, The Burned Photo.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What was the moment when you realized that you wanted to be an actor?

CURTISS COOK: You know I don’t know if I can put an exact time on it, but what I can tell you is—I don’t feel like I chose acting, I feel as if it chose me. NO one in my family acted or performed for a living or even casually, so I didn’t have any direct role models, but once I found it, that freedom of being another person and being able to say things I wanted to but couldn’t, learning things about myself and the world… I never looked back!

AM: You have been in so many TV series from The Sopranos, The Bold Type, House of Cards, Mayans M.C., The Chi, as well as movies such as Shutter Island and been on Broadway for The Lion King and Miss Saigon. What are you looking for when you’re reading a character or the script overall in terms of deciding whether you want to be in it?

CC: Hmmm good question… It changes from project to project. Sometimes it may be, “Have I done this kind of role before?” and if I had, “Is there something I can improve upon?” Sometimes it’s, “Does this person move the story forward? If not, is there space for me to make that happen? Or, is this something I NEVER THOUGHT I could pull off?” Yes! So, let’s go for it. And then, it could be as simple as, “Do I like this person (character)? No? Why not? Let’s see if I can have empathy for him.”

AM: Is your approach to the work different depending on whether it’s on TV, a movie or on the stage?

CC: No, it’s pretty much the same. It’s just the time I get to prep for the character and how long I get to live with him that differs.

AM: We’ve seen you in a number of roles and always enjoy when we see you are attached to the project as there is a poise and bold quality that you bring to your work. What is the process that you go into when it comes to becoming the character that you will play?

CC: Well, thank you for the compliment! That really means a lot to me. I take what I do seriously knowing that it’s not serious… Finding the joy in what I do is important to me. This is not just what I do, it’s who I am. It’s a part of me—a HUGE part of me—So, I go all in and the devil is in the details.

AM: Do you find that when you’re finished playing a character that there’s a process in releasing him and is it harder when you’re in a series since you will have to pick him back up again?

CC: The short answer is yes. I definitely have to decompress when work is done. I’m getting better on the time it takes, but I make sure I take it.

AM: West Side Story is an iconic musical and this musical film adaption directed by Steven Spielberg has been very anticipated. You play Abe, a new character – which was created by Steven specifically for you – how did this come about and what did you draw from to bring him to life?

CC: Well, the character was created for someone like me, an addition to a classic that was needed and necessary. So, Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Kushner did that. I just so happen to be the one who got the gift of breathing life into Abe and hearing one of the greats say, “If Curtiss wants it, he can have it.” It means and meant the world to me.

AM: What was it like being part of this production?

CC: Nothing short of amazing!!!

AM: Being from the Midwest originally, I’m always intrigued about shows that focus on Chicago so when The Chi came out, I was hooked from the first show and I love how they showcase the lives of those that live in the community that spans a number of economical, aspirational and inspirational layers. When you came on as Douda, you bring such a dichotomy to the show. How did you get connected with this series and how would you describe your character?

CC: Once again, thank you! I auditioned—I self-taped actually. At the time, I was doing two other series and I thought there’s no way I’ll get three series at the same time and low in behold!!!

Douda is a complicated man like most of us are, that’s one of the beauties of this character. Just when you think you have him figured out, you don’t… and not because he's fooling you, but because he has so much to offer, so many layers, and he has a plan for himself and his community. Nothing is going to stop him from seeing that plan come to fruition.

AM: It feels like Douda continues to share new layers to him which we saw in Season 4 - how much influence do you have in shaping him and giving insights into how he will be portrayed?

CC: None really. I wait for the pages and try my damnedest not to mess it up. I just stay open, willing and adventurous. I get to act for a living... how glorious is that...

Mannnnn, this is all I’ve ever wanted to do and I get to do it on this level with this character on this show on this network and with these people. I HIT THE LOTTO!!!

AM: The Chi was renewed for a 5th season, are you getting ready to film and is there anything you can tell us about the upcoming season or are looking forward to?

CC: Well, I just hope Douda comes back. You saw what happened at the end of the season right? I just hope we get to see him again.

AM: You have worked with phenomenal people from Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Lena Waithe to name a few. You were the Executive Producer of Counselor and A Black Man Acting. Do you see yourself doing more projects behind the camera?

CC: Yes, I will and there’s something happening now. So, yes keep a look out for it.

AM: We love that in the past few months there have been phenomenal immersive podcasts that have top talent telling scripted stories. I think that QCODE does this in such an amazing way and am a fan of their shows regardless of the topic. You lent your talents to The Burned Photo which was a podcast that I enjoyed listening to and I can’t wait until the second season. Why did you want to be apart of this and what was it like creating it?

CC: Wow yeah, I had never done that before and I was curious to see if I could and how it would work. And let me tell you… it was WORK. Wait until you hear the second season! Boy-oh-boy, get ready.

AM: Do you have any upcoming projects that you can share with us that we should keep an eye out for?

CC: A great movie written and directed by Charles Murray with an amazing cast. Hopefully you’ll hear about a release date soon!

AM: When you’re not on set, it seems like you spend a fair amount of time at the gym. What are 3 things that you like to do when you’re working out?

CC: Yea, health is pretty important to me. My favorite work out is boxing, then I’ll do a little free weights, then end everything with core.

AM: How do you take personal time for yourself?

CC: I don’t know if I do… I need to get better at that.
