THE 9LIST X LORE BATHING CLUB

We ended the month by partnering with a recently opened bathing club here in NYC’s. Our THE 9LIST X Lore Bathing Club Event kicked off the Summer with an intimate group of our readers/community to enjoy the services/amenities at this wellness destination to enjoy saunas, red light therapy, and cold plunges. In addition to our attendees enjoying a 75 minute session, we also gifted them items that we have been loving and sharing in our issues: an Oleada AnyWear Toiletry Set, as well as an $100 gift card from this handbag brand, and a David Protein bar!

We sat down with Lore Bathing Club to find our more about this bath house, what they offer their guests, and more!

ATHLEISURE MAG: We had the pleasure of coming to Lore Bathing Club initially for an Editor event in March and loved the space and having you host our THE 9LIST Event this month was so great to share with our community ! When did you launch and what is the meaning behind the name, Lore?

LORE BATHING CLUB: Lore officially opened on May 11 2026 and celebrated its grand opening over May 15-17. Lore brought together design, hospitality, wellness, and community, but the core idea stayed consistent: create a place people want to return to regularly.

AM: Who are the founders of LBC and what can you tell us about their backgrounds?

LBC: Founded by James O’Reilly, an entrepreneur known for building transformative social, work, and wellness spaces, including co-founding NeueHouse and leading new concepts at Life Time, and Adam Elzer, a hospitality entrepreneur and concept developer known for creating community-driven restaurants as co-founder and former CEO of Everyday Hospitality, Lore brings a new kind of bathing experience to downtown Manhattan. James’ background building membership-driven social and wellness spaces, including NeueHouse and Life Time Work, and Adam’s experience building hospitality concepts in New York, helped shape Lore as both an experience and an operating model.

AM: You are a neighborhood bathing club. Can you tell us more about what that means and why you wanted to create this space in NoHo.

LBC: Lore is not a broad wellness facility trying to do everything. It is a focused neighborhood bathing club built around contrast therapy, atmosphere, and regular use.

NoHo made sense because it sits at the intersection of downtown work, hospitality, culture, fitness, and residential life. It is a neighborhood where people already move between different parts of their day, and Lore is designed to fit into that rhythm.

From a physical standpoint, the site needed enough space to support the full bathing experience: a large communal sauna, a generous cold plunge, an infrared sauna, and areas for arrival, transition, and recovery. The building also had to allow for a space that feels immersive and sensory, not simply functional. Materials, circulation, sound, temperature, and the transitions between hot and cold all matter.

AM: What’s the correlation between Saunas and Finnish culture? What are the health benefits in doing this?

LBC: Our approach to bathing is heavily influenced by the Finnish and Japanese bathing traditions; unfused, architecturally restrained, intergenerational and social.

The decision to promote frequent use is supported by a 2017 longitudinal study conducted in Finland, which tracked over 2,000 people for 20 years to understand the long-term benefits of consistent sauna practice.

The study found that individuals who used the sauna four times a week were significantly less likely to die from cardiovascular-related and neurodegenerative diseases, resulting in a 40% reduced risk in all-cause mortality. The practice is often viewed as the next best thing for longterm health beyond physical exercise.

AM: What can you tell us about the aesthetic of LBC?

LBC: The interiors are shaped by natural materials, sensory transitions, and an elemental atmosphere that reflects the movement between hot and cold.

Because people return often, the space also has to hold up to repetition. It needs to feel special, but not precious. It needs to support both quiet personal use and social connection.

AM: For those coming for their first time, what do we need to know in terms of what we can wear, staying hydrated, and what we need to keep in mind?

LBC: We encourage people to follow feeling rather than the clock. Maybe today it’s just putting your feet in the cold. Maybe it’s 30 seconds. Removing performance and expectation often surprises people — it takes the pressure off. What surprises them most is the shift afterward: the clarity, the calm, the sense of returning to baseline.

A typical visit runs around 75 minutes. Guests move fluidly between the large dry sauna and the cold pool room, with the infrared sauna available for those seeking something quieter and more intimate.

AM: When guests come for a 75min session, are there a series of activities that have to be done within a time period or can a person enjoy elements at various times?

LBC: We intentionally keep guidance simple and humble. If someone asks, we’ll offer suggestions, but we emphasize that there isn’t one correct way — what works for one person may not work for another.

AM: Tell us about the programming offered at LBC as you have Guided Cold Water Soak, In-Sauna Aroma Therapy, Guided Stretching, Aufguss, and Listening Moments.

LBC: Our goal with Lore was to remove the excesses of larger facilities (steam rooms, massages, IV drips) away from prescriptive guidance of more heavily programmed alternatives. By doing this we could focus on the essential elements of bathing, and do those parts better than anyone else. We are also trying to offer a bathing experience on a more frequent basis, which to us means 2-4 times per week. With that, we move from thinking of a bathhouse as an occasional indulgence (once a month or a quarter) towards being a vital part of your weekly routine.

AM: What is the Cold Pool Room?

LBC: 46-degree cold plunge.

It opens people up. After the cold, the defenses come down. Guests are more likely to chat with a stranger, compare notes on the plunge, share something small and real. Cold water exposure has a way of leveling people — for a moment, everyone in that room has just done the same hard thing together.

AM: Tell us more about the Dry & Infrared Saunas.

LBC: Lore includes a 700-square-foot dry sauna and an infrared sauna.

The larger, dry sauna is sized deliberately — spacious enough that guests have room to breathe and be with their thoughts, but intimate enough that that conversation happens naturally. Ambient music plays, giving people acoustic cover; someone can be sitting nearby without your exchange pulling them in.

The infrared sauna is available for those seeking something quieter and more intimate.

AM: What amenities are available that we can enjoy in our sessions?

LBC: Beautiful waffle weave towels, Dyson hair dryers, more personal space in the changing facility. Margin global provides all of the core amenities in the showers, and we have MONKS spray deodorant and wide variety of Herbivore Botanicals for post-shower.

AM: What is the Reception Cafe and what takes place here?

LBC: Entrance area - a space to regroup or gather thoughts before or after a session. Offering La Cabra coffee, Masha tea, some tasty bone broth or even a fresh pressed juice. We’ll have a rotating selection of grand go snack and beverages.

AM: Tell us about the memberships that are available.

LBC: Lore offers a monthly membership. Each visit is a 75-minute session (towels provided; swimwear required). Weekly or monthly memberships include one booking per day.

3 session packs and single sessions are available.

AM: Can non-members also come to LBC and if so, how much is that?

LBC: 3 session packs are available at $149 and single sessions are available at $55/$25 (Peak/Off-Peak).

AM: Are there any special events coming up that we should know about?

LBC: The brand will continue to grow through collaborations with like-minded partners, original content, and future offsite moments that extend Lore’s point of view into the broader culture of the city. Together, these efforts reflect a larger ambition: to build Lore not only as a destination, but as a lasting part of how people gather, recover, and spend time in New York.

AM: Are there any partnerships that you can share that you want us to know about?

LBC: Lore plans to foster community through partnerships with yoga studios, run clubs, and breathwork coaches to offer contextualized events like stretch sessions or guided cold water immersion. We recently came together with Lusso to stock their footwear for sale in our retail section, you’ll also see all of our sauna masters wearing them. We’re working on dialing in a hydration partner as well, more to come on this.

AM: Can we expect to see additional LBC’s in the city or is there an interest to expand to other areas?

LBC: We’ll look to open further uptown and Brooklyn next. We’re excited to expand access to bathing as a regular practice for more people.

BRINGING ROME TO NYC | GINGER RISTORANTI

This month, we made our way to Midtown to try Ginger Ristoranti for dinner on an unseanably warm day this Spring! We had heard a lot about this Roman-born Mediterranean lifestyle destination that comes together with it’s unique blend of wellness, design, color, and culinary come together! From healthy juices, satisfying appetizers, mains, and cocktails - this was defintiely a great meal to enjoy.

We sat down with Chef Gabriel Luca to find out more about the restaurant, its Roman roots and what we should order upon our next visit with friends, family, and colleagues.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Before we delve into Ginger Ristoranti here in NYC, we know that it started in Rome and has 3 locations there. What can you tell us about these locations?

CHEF GABRIEL LUCA: Ginger Saporie Salute was born in the historic heart of Rome, with three locations embedded within the city’s Centro Storico and close to landmarks such as the Pantheon and the Spanish Steps. Each address is deeply tied to Rome’s architectural memory and tells a different story. In Via Borgognona, an original Liberty-style skylight washes the room in soft natural light, while the building itself once housed the boutique of iconic Roman designer Laura Biagiotti, leaving behind a sense of elegance that still defines the atmosphere. At Corte Laica, inside Palazzo Raggi, the space was once a convent courtyard and today lives beneath a Rationalist skylight that preserves its openness while giving it a luminous, contemporary identity. Across all three Roman locations, the vision is consistent: to inhabit beautiful historic spacesand reinterpret them through a fresh, wellness-driven lifestyle lens.

AM: Can you tell us a bit about the background of the Roman restaurateurs?

CHEF GL: Ginger is driven by the vision of founder and owner Dario Asara, who, although born in Rome, has Sardinian roots - a heritage that deeply informs the philosophy behind the brand. Sardinia is one of the world’s Blue Zones, where lifestyle, food, sea air, and a strong connection to nature have long contributed to exceptional longevity and quality of life. That idea of living well is central to Ginger. Together with his wife, Corinna Bassetti Josi, who leads the creative direction of the brand and imagines each space with a strong visual identity, Dario built a concept where Italian tradition meets a more vibrant global perspective. Their travels, especially throughout South America, introduced a colorful fruit-forward energy that can still be felt across the menu today.

AM: Why did you want to bring Ginger Ristoranti to the US and to launch here in NYC?

CHEF GL: New York felt like a natural evolution for Ginger. It is a city where people move fast, yet think carefully about quality, ingredients, and how they want to feel. That makes it the perfect place for a concept rooted in balance - where Roman hospitality, Mediterranean freshness, and a contemporary wellness mindset can all coexist. Bringing Ginger to NYC meant translating our Roman DNA into a more cosmopolitan rhythm without losing the warmth, generosity, and sense of pleasure that have always defined us.

AM: You’re located in Midtown, steps away from Rockefeller Center which is a busy neighborhood that is a mix of the theater crowd, media conglomerates, and other businesses and then you open the doors and you step into an oasis of vibrant hues and calm that gives you the feeling of being transported to a resort like destination where Summer never ends. You are located in the former Exxon building and the restaurant is 7,000 square feet! Tell us about the aesthetic and interior design of this restaurant and why you wanted to be in this neighborhood?

CHEF GL: Our Midtown location, inside the former Exxon Building at 1251 Avenue of the Americas, is our most ambitious project to date: a 7,000-square-foot restaurant conceived as a contemporary Mediterranean escape in the middle of Manhattan. Being steps from Rockefeller Center placed us in a neighborhood that is constantly alive - from office workers and media to theatergoers and visitors - and we loved the idea of offering a sensory contrast to that pace. Warm terracotta tones, light woods, lush greenery, and tactile surfaces soften the city outside and create a feeling that is sunny, relaxed, and transportive. The space was imagined by Corinna Bassetti Josi in collaboration with Costa Group, with the goal of creating not simply a restaurant, but a destination where design, light, color, and lifestyle all become part of the experience.

AM: What are the spices and ingredients that are indicative a Roman-inspired menu.

CHEF GL: At the heart of a Roman-inspired menu are straightforward, yet deeply expressive ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, pecorino romano, black pepper, artichokes, chicories, anchovies, citrus, and fresh herbs. At Ginger, we build on that foundation with seasonal vegetables, ginger, tropical fruit, bright vinaigrettes, and a lighter hand overall. The result is a cuisine that still feels unmistakably Italian, yet more vibrant, contemporary, and naturally aligned with how people want to eat today.

AM: Guests can enjoy an all day menu that focuses on healthy interpretations of these dishes. Your menu is rooted Roman culinary traditions - can you tell us what those are?

CHEF GL: Roman culinary tradition is rooted in simplicity, seasonality, and intense flavor rather than excess. It is the cuisine of olive oil, vegetables, handmade pasta, cured meats, cheeses, and iconic pairings such as artichokes with guanciale or black pepper with pecorino. At Ginger, we keep that soul intact while reinterpreting it through a fresher lens: more produce, more brightness, lighter sauces, raw preparations, and fruit woven naturally into the menu. It is comfort food with energy - traditional in spirit, but more fluid and modern in execution.

AM: What are 3 appetizers that we should consider whether we’re coming in for Lunch or Dinner?

CHEF GL: 3 appetizers to try: A vibrant beginning that captures Ginger’s signature style: colorful, polished, Mediterranean, and full of freshness.

Suppli - Golden and crisp on the outside, with a comforting molten center; crispy rice and tomato balls filled with mozzarella, served with basil mayo.

Crudo di Ricciola - Bright, silky, and elegant; sliced hamachi with pimenton-marinated mango, shaved spring onion, and toasted macadamia.

Barbabietola - Earthy yet luminous, with a beautifully balanced sweettart finish; braised beets, green apple puree, pickled green apples, toasted almonds, and raspberry dressing.

AM: What are 3 pastas that we should be thinking about?

CHEF GL: 3 pastas to try:

Here, handmade pasta becomes both comforting and refined - a meeting point between Roman soul and Ginger’s lighter, more expressive style.

Paccheri - Generous and satisfying, with a delicate maritime richness; homemade pasta with wild branzino ragu and confit cherry tomatoes.

Gnocchi ai Carciofi - Pillowy, savory, and deeply Roman in spirit; homemade potato and parsley gnocchi with sauteed artichokes, guanciale, and crispy Parmigiano.

Bottoni di Burrata - Silky and gently indulgent, with creamy and briny notes in balance; burrata-filled ravioli with mussels, tomato sauce, and black pepper.

AM: In terms of Mains, what are 3 that our table should consider ordering?

CHEF GL: 3 mains to try:

Balanced, nourishing, and visually vibrant, these plates reflect the way Ginger brings together wellness, flavor, and polish.

Salmone - Luminous and gently sweet, with freshness in every bite; roasted salmon with ginger glaze, avocado puree, mango, cucumber, watermelon radish, and sesame seeds.

Spigola - Clean, elegant, and Mediterranean in tone; wild striped bass with red pepper reduction, shaved fennel, and black olive powder.

Saltimbocca - A timeless Roman classic with a refined touch; veal filet rolled with Prosciutto di Parma, butter and sage sauce, and broccoli rabe.

AM: What are 3 sides that we should or to compliment our meal?

Simple, intentional, and full of character, these sides bring contrast, texture, and a distinctly Mediterranean point of view.

Patate - Crispy, golden, and moreish; crispy russet potatoes served with mustard mayo.

Melanzane - Soft and smoky with gentle spice; seared Japanese eggplant with oregano and pimenton.

Cime di Rapa - Bold and savory with a pleasant bitter edge; sauteed broccoli rabe with garlic oil and chili.

AM: For those looking for pizza, what are 3 that we should keep in mind?

CHEF GL: 3 pizzas to know:

Our pizzas feel classic yet elevated, with premium ingredients, lively textures, and the kind of flavor contrast that makes them instantly memorable.

Barese - Bold, savory, and slightly spicy; smoked provola, Parmigiano Reggiano, sausage, broccoli rabe, and spicy olive oil.

Nerano - Creamy and indulgent while still feeling fresh; zucchini, Parmigiano fondue, and zucchini chips.

Parma - Airy, elegant, and effortlessly Italian; Prosciutto di Parma, arugula, and shaved Parmigiano Reggiano.

AM: What are 3 salads that we should know about?

Fresh, polished, and lifestyle-minded, these salads are designed to feel nourishing without ever sacrificing personality.

Seggiola - Crisp, colorful, and layered with texture; avocado, carrots, celery, fennel, grape tomatoes, Castelvetrano olives, watermelon radish, organic seeds, mixed salad, and balsamic.

Aurelia - Savory and gently sweet, with a satisfying crunch; steamed organic chicken, green apples, celery, parsley, toasted walnuts, mixed salad, and mustard dressing.

Botticella - Bright and contemporary with a tropical note; house-cured salmon, mango, shaved spring onion, toasted pistachios, dill, mixed salad, and citronette.

AM: Tell us about the Salumni Bar!

CHEF GL: The Salumi Bar is our celebration of Italian conviviality and the pleasure of sharing. It brings together premium cured meats and cheeses in a way that feels both classic and social, whether guests order Salumi e formaggi, Formaggi, Prosciutto e burrata, or hand-cut Patanegra. It naturally pairs with aperitivo and reinforces the idea that Ginger is as much about gathering and rhythm as it is about any single dish.

AM: We had the pleasure of trying one of your ginger juices which was amazing - what are 3 smoothies and/or juices you would like to highlight?

CHEF GL: 3 juices and smoothies to try:

This is the most immediate expression of Ginger’s identity: energizing, sunny, fruit-driven, and rooted in feel-good living.

Ginger - Zesty, refreshing, and cleansing; pineapple, fennel, ginger, and apple.

Buzz - Tropical and lively with a little kick; mango, soursop, ginger, and apple.

Floripa - Smooth, rich, and quietly nourishing; acai, banana, and apple.

AM: What are 3 desserts that we should have in mind?

CHEF GL: 3 desserts to finish with:

Dessert at Ginger feels indulgent without heaviness - polished, playful, and designed to leave the table on a high note.

Tiramisu - Classic and airy with comforting depth; organic coffee, savoiardi, and mascarpone.

Magnum - Textural and fun, with a crisp shell and creamy core; homemade gelato pop glazed with dark chocolate and almonds.

Acai Cheesecake - Fruity, lightly tangy, and unexpectedly fresh; acai-flavored cheesecake with banana.

AM: What are 3 cocktails that you suggest that we should have?

CHEF GL: 3 cocktails to know:

The cocktail list bridges Italian ritual and New York momentum: expressive, stylish, and built with the same colorful energy that defines the room.

Fresh n’ Cool - Crisp, herbaceous, and ultra-refreshing; gin, mint, lime, simple syrup, cucumber, and club soda.

Amore Amaro - Layered, citrusy, and gently bittersweet; vodka, lemon, simple syrup, Aperol, strawberry, and bubbles.

Ace - Bold and unexpected, with savory brightness and spice; whisky, carrot juice, lemon, orange, and a Tajin rim.

AM: What should we know about Aperitivo Hour?

CHEF GL: Aperitivo is one of the rituals that most clearly expresses our Italian side. At Ginger, it becomes a lively Midtown pause: a moment for spritzes, cocktails, selected wines by the glass, and light bites such as olives, Suppli, crispy potatoes, focaccia bites, cold cuts, cheese, and calamari. It is social, easy, and full of atmosphere - the bridge between daytime energy and evening conviviality.

AM: If you haven’t done so, please tell us about your outdoor patio, The Bar, and your private dining room?

CHEF GL: Each area of Ginger Midtown was designed to feel like a seamless journey between indoor and outdoor living. The outdoor patio is a small urban oasis, lush and intimate, where greenery becomes part of the experience through both planted vessels and the natural palette echoed in the furnishings. Inside, the restaurant opens like a contemporary piazza or indoor garden, with the bar acting as its beating heart: the colors of fresh fruit and bottles bring movement, rhythm, and visual energy to the room. Our private dining room offers a quieter, more intimate point of view. Enclosed by a Liberty-style glass partition, it is full of natural light and overlooks a public garden, creating a beautiful balance between privacy, openness, and nature.

AM: Are there any upcoming events that you have that we should know about?

CHEF GL: Yes - we are building a calendar of moments that reflect the lifestyle side of Ginger. IN THE PLAYER BOX | MORGAN RIDDLE

We love when we’re in the midst of tennis season and we see great matches on the court, but the fashion and beauty that WAGS bring is always worth watching! Morgan Riddle is one that we are always watching while she cheers on Taylor Fritz. We took a few moments to find out about her beauty musts, her partnership with ISDIN to highlight the Get It On Campaign, and how we can incorporate our SPF into our routine.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What was your first beauty product that you fell in love with and is it still part of your routines?

MORGAN RIDDLE: My first beauty product that I fell in love with, I would say the Dior Face and Body Foundation. I have been using that for about 6 years now. So that’s been an OG staple.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Who would you say are your 3 beauty icons and what have they taught you about caring for your skin?

MR: I wouldn’t say that I have any famous beauty icons, but I would say that I follow a number of skinfluencers on TikTok, mostly more mature or older women that are in their 40s/50s. They have tried all the treatments and all of the products and I feel that they have all of the best recommendations.

AM: We know that you’re constantly on the go especially when you’re at tennis tournaments. What beauty trends do you love and how do you make them your own for your lifestyle?

MR: I always have SPF and so that is obviously a must. So the ISDIN Fusion Water Magic is great, especially with many of the tennis tournaments and because I am in the Players Box, I am constantly in the sun! If I don’t have SPF on that just wouldn’t work as I am always getting fried! My chest and my scalp - it can be a lot! So I always make sure that I have that. My skin is more dry so I always have one of those Hyaluronic sprays throughout the flight to just try and to prevent breakouts. I used to always breakout when I was traveling on planes a lot.

AM: Tell me about your partnership with ISDIN, how it came about, and why it is synergistic with you?

MR: I have actually known about this brand for awhile. They are really popular in Europe and they actually work a lot on the tennis tour. They are the biggest suncare brand in Spain. Then, they just launched in the US and since I had known about them for awhile as well as using European skincare for years ever since I first started traveling on tour, I think I was already a fan of the brand and then when I tried this product, it sits so well under makeup and I feel that I am always having issues with face sunscreens and pilling. As I said, I run more dry so sometimes it feels a bit more patchy, but this one has hyaluronic acid in it so it makes my skin really, really glowy under the makeup!

AM: Clearly we know that safe sun is important. For those that have yet to include it in their routines, how can they make sure to incorporate it in there?

MR: I always do habit stacking now because I read that book Atomic Habits. So as soon as I get up in the morning and brush my teeth, I just put sunscreen before I even go on my morning walks. I think that just adding it into something that you do in your routine so that it is synergistic. To reapply, I always have an extra one in my bag that every time I open my bag, I can see it and remind myself to put it back on.

TAKE CONTROL

Right before NYFW, we attended a roundtable dinner at Manhatta with the Medtronic team to learn about their latest device, Altaviva which is an implantable tibial neuromodulation system that allows those that suffer with Urge Urinary Incontinence (UUI) and allows them to enjoy a quality of life. We wanted to know more about various bladder issues, what the pathways are to treatment and about this device from Dr. Janet Harris-Hicks, a urogynecologist who we met at the dinner. Since this dinner which had great conversations from her, a patient who was going through the trials as well as those who were involved with creating the device, much has taken place as they attended a conference to share an array of data and they are now FDA approved. We talk about this and more to understand what we need to know about this condition and how we can help ourselves or others who may need this!

ATHLEISURE MAG: It was great to meet you at the Medtronic dinner a few weeks back at Manhatta where we learned about bladder control and the innovative device which recently became FDA approved. Dr. Janet Harris-Hicks, you spoke at the event and walked us through the device, but before we talk about that, you are a urogynecologist, can you tell what you specialize and what this entails?

DR. JANET HARRIS-HICKS: Absolutely. So in general, as a urogynecologist, we are a sub-specialty of Surgeons that focuses on what’s called Pelvic Floor Disorders. And so those disorders are broken up into 3 main categories. We are sub-specialized to treat Pelvic Floor Disorders of pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and fecal incontinence. So, obviously, in those 3 broad areas and focusing on obviously only on women, that’s where the gynecologist part comes in. In those 3 broad department areas of clinical medicine - there’s a lot of sub-specialty of diseases, but those are our focuses on urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse.

AM: Is there a difference between urinary incontinence and an overactive bladder?

DR. JHH: Yes, absolutely. So urinary incontinence, by definition, is the unwanted loss of urine prior to your ability to reach the restroom. Okay, so you’re actually leaking urine when you don’t want to be expelling that urine, versus overactive bladder is a syndrome. So, by definition, a syndrome in medicine means a collection of symptoms, okay, and that can be caused by multiple different disease processes. So, overactive bladder by definition is the sense of urgency of needing to rush to the restroom with the added frequency of urination, which is defined as 8 or more times of urination within a 24-hour period. Then we even get more specialized in the respect that we call it Overactive Bladder Wet versus Overactive Bladder Dry, so there it does not have to have the urinary incontinence component to have overactive bladder. It’s simply the culmination of symptoms that is urinary urgency, urinary frequency plus or minus nocturia, which means having to get up to the restroom more than once at night. And so, with that syndrome, you may have urinary incontinence as a part of it, or you may not, but the actual overactive bladder is your urgency and frequency of urination.

AM: Oh wow. So, what are the symptoms that people should be looking into if you realize maybe you’re having bladder issues, and that maybe you need to get it checked out?

DR. JHH: So, just those things, believe it or not - those individual components. If you’re having to go to the restroom 8 or more times in a 24-hour period, that’s a sign of a problem. That’s not normal, so that is that should be evaluated. Obviously, if you’re leaking urine before you can get to the restroom that need to be evaluated. And if you have to get up at night more than once to empty your bladder – 1 time is normal, more than once at night, is the sign of a problem. So those are the basic functionalities that if folks are starting to experience those problems, they should reach out to a specialist to be evaluated.

AM: In terms of Athleisure Mag, A lot of times, especially when you’re thinking about The New York Marathon and other races that people are preparing for around the world or even focusing on fitness goals - a lot of people are increasing their water intake. How do you know the difference between? Yes, it’s a problem in terms of your body or because you’ve simply increased your intake so it’s not something that you have to be concerned about?

DR. JHH: Yeah, great question. So we play a part in that which is obviously adequate hydration and not over hydration. So typical, adequate hydration for an adult would be 64 to 84 ounces of fluid a day, and then I always tell my folks now if it’s too hot, then you need more hydration. Obviously, if you’re talking to a marathon runner and they’re training, there’s a difference in hydration. But on a daily basis, if you’re just doing your regular activities, you’re adequately hydrated, and you’re having those symptoms - Then again, that’s an issue. Obviously, you can over hydrate yourself and force urinary frequency and urgency.

AM: It just came into our mind because when we’re working out on a new method or taking on something new, you’re going to increase your water and it takes a couple of days for the body to accept what’s going on and then the body levels out to whatever that new normal is.

DR. JHH: And that takes you into what we define in medicine when we’re thinking about treating overactive bladder, so we have a clinical pathway we follow that’s standardized among all of our sub-specialties in neurology. And that’s endorsed by the American Neurology Association. So, when we’re thinking about, how do we correct these problems for patients, we think of it as first, second, and third line therapy. So, first line therapy, you just hit the nail on the head. It’s all about behavior modifications. Yeah, you want to make sure the patient’s adequately, but not over hydrated. The next step is teaching patients about bladder training, you should go to the restroom about every two and a half to three hours. Then, we talk about elimination of what we call bladder irritants, so high levels of caffeine, red wine, spicy foods, cigarette, whether that’s primary or secondary exposure. Those are some of the top four irritants of the bladder. So that’s our first conversation in discussing the patient’s bladder function. And then, once they have initiated those and practice those and put those practices into place, if they’re continuing to have symptoms of overactive bladder, then we start talking about medication. So, that’s our second line therapy. Okay, patients are supposed to have somewhere between 6 weeks and 8 weeks worth of medication, plus their behavior modifications, and then if they continue to have issues with their bladder of overactive bladder, they move to third line therapy where we start to talk about Alta Viva and then sacral neuromodulation, which interstem is a part of peripheral tibial stimulation, which is historically where we got our data to even come up with the thought of an implantable tibial implant, and then Botox, which can be injected into the bladder, and that’s that clinical pathway that all patients will step through to get to that point of treatment.

AM: During the roundtable dinner hearing from the patient who received the implantable tibial neuromodulation system, as well as hearing your comments about it as well as your colleagues was truly insightful. And the fact that between that dinner in early Sept right before NYFW and now, it seems like, so much has happened since then because we have the approvals for the device to be widely used. So, for our community that was not at this dinner, can you talk about this device?

DR. JHH: So Altaviva is an implantable tibial stimulator. Again, our historical data is that since 1983, believe it or not, the clinical pathway was shown to be highly effective where we could actually take an acupuncture needle and tap it in at the tibial nerve down near the ankle and use an external TENS unit (Editor’s Note: A TENS unit is a small, battery-operated device that used low-level electrical pulses) to stimulate that nerve, which retrograde stimulates up through the leg back to the bladder and have positive impact upon treatment of overactive bladder syndromes. The issue became just how did you deploy that treatment to patients and the data showed that those patients needed to be treated with that external stimulator once a week for 12 weeks, and then once a month forever. Well, I again, as I said at our conference, I love my patients, and I think they like me, but I’m not so sure they want to visit me for the rest of their life in order to maintain their continence, and so that is where our historical scientific evidence came from.

AM: That’s amazing.

DR. JHH: Altaviva expands on that and now, with Medtronic’s insight, it has created a small, implantable device that is put in which requires no general anesthesia, just a little bit of local anesthetic in the leg. Typically, the procedure itself is somewhere on the order of 10 to 15 minutes. The device itself is very simple. I’ve heard it compared to half a stick of a gum versus a USB.

AM: At the dinner, we kept saying it was the size of a USB – it’s unbelievable.

DR. JHH: Think of it as a USB, so it’s very small. The incision at the ankle is about a quarter of an inch, maybe a little bit less than that and slips into that pocket with two small absorbable stitches. The amazing thing is that treatment begins immediately, okay? The technology is so advanced that there’s enough energy in that tiny device that the patient will receive therapy for a solid year. Well, all our patients will come back once a year so we can check on them as their physician. And so at that visit in their 15 minutes, we will recharge their device and they’re ready to go for another year. And so, again, that device is rechargeable in current technology, as I’m sure it will continue to advance for up to 15 years for that patient.

AM: That’s just amazing.

DR. JHH: It’s just been a beautiful journey to see. You know that we’ve had this data. We’ve understood the scientific process, and now we actually can deploy that information in a very acceptable, manner that allows patients to have a phenomenal Improvement in their quality of life.

AM: It’s incredible. What should a patient, know who let’s say they’ve been cleared to take this surgery. What should they know prior to doing it? Is there anything they need to do or prepare themselves for? Like, if you go to get laser hair removal, there’s certain things that you need to do before you get there.

DR. JHH: You know, believe it or not, outside of, and they would have obviously been guided through the pathway outside of going through that pathway to determine as you said that they are indeed qualified for this third line therapy. There really isn’t anything that they have to be prepared for. You know, like other surgeries, you’ve got to make sure someone comes with you that can drive you home. Because this does not require any systemic anesthesia, you can drive yourself to your appointment. You can drive yourself home so you don’t have to even involve any other family members.

Again, the therapy is immediate, so there’s no delay in actually starting to see Improvement in your bladder function and quality of life. But the most common medication, which is an aspirin or baby aspirin - we didn’t stop that in our patients for clinical trial. So, so we don’t have to, you know? Really, there’s not a lot of as you’ve alluded to.

AM: Wow! And since the FDA approval that took place, have you seen more people upticking to want to get this now that they have access to it?

DR. JHH: Absolutely! Yes, it’s been so much fun! Of course, we’ve reached out to our own patients in the practice. We sent out an email, and immediately, we were inundated with interest from that. It’s just been so fabulous. I actually just did an outreach in the community yesterday and went out and spoke to lots of the primary care physicians, and they were just so excited, because I mean you, you know, these numbers, it’s insane. I mean, 32 million Americans suffer with overactive bladder. I mean, that’s just the overactive bladder folks. Not to mention all of the urinary incontinence that comes along with that, and our primary care doctors are the ones that are at the forefront. They’re the ones having to deal with this as well as this other laundry list of Health Care issues that patients have. So, for them to understand that pathway that we talked about and how those patients get to me and then there’s actually a definitive therapy, because again, data would show us that the average patient will and I say, just sits and turns right, and the medical meal for average of 6 years just going round and round in medications before they actually even have access or even understand that there is access to the third line therapies, and that’s where I really try to reach out in my own community as well as I think most of my colleagues. Even at the level of technology - it is the industry like Medtronics that realizes there’s such a lack of knowledge.

AM: We have a widespread readership and community across the country as well as internationally, too. But if someone was looking to get this done, where do they go? I mean, obviously, they have your office, but where do they start?

DR. JHH: Well, your gynecologist and urologist are trained in this field obviously and understand and have the skill set to deploy third line interventions, and for most insurance companies and even along those with governmental supplements with Medicare/Medicaid. They do have to follow through with their primary care physician before they get into that subspecialty office. But again, the pathway is very easy. It’s not a lot of barriers there for them to be able to be seen by your urogynecologist. Of course, I speak specifically in women. They can establish with primary care and very quickly and easily move through the sub-specialist office.

AM: That is phenomenal. For those in our community that are connecting with this whether they are in need of it or a friend, family, or colleague, what do they need to know or be aware of to have these tough conversations about this?

DR. JHH: Again, I focus not just on women, and I would assume this is also a man, but obviously, the bulk of urinary incontinence from a standpoint of the numbers showing that there are more women, obviously than men, that suffer with urinary incontinence. But the misnomer, and this is another one of my huge soap boxes that it is a normal part of aging to actually leak urine, okay? The conversations that I hear among women that, “oh, I just have to cross my legs when I laugh, cough or sneeze - I just have to put on a pad.” You know, all the compensatory things that we do as females because we’re busy – we have to be mom, we have to be aunt, we have to be wife, we have to be surgeon - and all those things come first. My mission is that women understand that there are true pathways to treatment and that it is not a normal part of aging, and you do not have to compensate for urinary incontinence and that it is a treatable process absolutely.

AM: In speaking with you today and even researching for this interview, these last 2 questions aren’t really related to this but as we’re speaking to someone who is also a urologist, we look at our poops as we know it says what is going on in our body and it means something. So is this the same with urine in terms of the color?

DR. JHH: Yeah, good question. Well, certainly, the darker the urine, the more concern there is for dehydration.

AM: Right.

DR. JHH: And again, we talked about the importance of overall health and adequate hydration is appropriate. So, if you’re seeing that your urine is extremely dark, then that certainly can indicate an issue of hydration. But outside of that, there’s not, you know, obviously, we can go down some rabbit holes, right? A lot of different things, right? That don’t have anything to do with urinary, right? But as far as bladder function, clear urine is a healthy sign. Light/pale urine is what it should look like. If it starts to get dark, if it starts to look pink, if it’s frankly blood in your urine, those are indications of other disease processes that need to be evaluated immediately for sure.

AM: Many in our community, us included are very focused on our gut health. We’re always looking at supplements like a new one we’ve tried called Broc Shot that has the broccoli seed powder wich has sulforaphane which aids in detoxing, reducing inflammation etc. Is there connection between gut health and your urine health in your opinion?

DR. JHH: That’s a really great question. Well, you know, I’m sure you’re aware that gut health pretty much plays a part in everything in your body. So, am I currently aware of any clinical literature out there that links gut health to bladder health? No.

AM: Right.

DR. JHH: That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist, that’s for sure. Because, as you said, we have understood, there’s so much important information out there about gut health and certainly again being focused on female, there is we could have an entire conversation on that.

AM: For sure and that would be welcome!

DR. JHH: Looking at vaginal health and the microbiome of the vagina – we could be here all day! That has certainly been some amazing data that has come out in the last 15 years of what we understand of the vaginal microbiome, which again in women is tremendously important in bladder health.

ATHLEISURE LIST | MINICIRCLE

Minicircle launched in 2019 with the goal of creating safe, accessible gene therapy treatments that could support human healthspan and mitigate suffering from preventable health conditions on a population level. Driven by my own personal experiences observing close friends and family with life-altering, incurable diseases, Minicircle’s primary goal is to improve quality of life for as many people as possible. The ultimate objective is to scale the treatments widely and make them increasingly easy to access in the years to come. We sat down with Mac Davis, CEO and Founder of Minicircle to find out more about them.

Minicircle has created a gene therapy platform that administers the treatment via non-invasive injection. This delivery method employs DNA plasmids, which are small, circular strands of DNA that are easy to inject subcutaneously and cheap to manufacture. These plasmids don’t directly integrate with or alter the recipient’s DNA, but rather add to existing DNA, making them transient, which is a strong differentiator compared to other gene therapy platforms.

Their current gene therapy offering revolves around a protein called follistatin, which has a number of different use cases. Follistatin is naturally occurring in the body and facilitates muscle growth by binding to myostatin, which inhibits muscle growth. We caught up with The Daily Pour (formerly Bottle Raiders) Founder/Publisher, Dan Abrams, and VP Marketing, Amanda Paul-Garnier, to chat about the exciting Drinks With Benefits, the first Zero Proof Festival, coming to New York (Altman Building, September 27, 2025).

ATHLEISURE MAG: So what led you to start the first Zero Proof Festival in NYC?

DAN ABRAMS: We had started a spirits media company that was initially focused on whiskey. And we were planning on expanding, and we did, to gin and rum and tequila. And as we were building out the business, we realized that functional beverages are becoming just an enormous part of spirits. And we can't really create a forward-thinking spirits business without making functional beverages a serious part of what we're doing.

And so as we came to that realization, we started talking about and thinking about events, in addition to doing content. Because we had acquired a company that was doing at the time 12 events around the country for whiskey and tequila. We've now expanded that to 15, so events were in the DNA of the business.

But now we were thinking, let's go big! We were stunned considering how significant a business non-alcohol and functional beverages have become, that there hasn't been a major awards in New York. There hasn't been a major event in conjunction with wellness in New York, almost anywhere. And so we thought, what a great opportunity to be on the forefront of this. And those were the seeds behind Drinks With Benefits.

AM: So what types of non-alcoholic or functional beverages would be showcased at this specific event?

AMANDA PAUL-GARNIER: So we have over 60 brands covering non-alcoholic wines, non-alcoholic beers, functional hemp and functional non-hemp products. Brands, probably, you know, like Ghia, Kin Euphorics, Athletic Brewing Company, Bero, But also brands you probably don't know that are very high quality, like Opius Elixirs, which is probably one of the best brands out there.

AM: Yeah, I would say on a personal note, I was diagnosed with gout in the middle of college. Beer is my kryptonite. So I've had to drink clear alcohol spirits or non-alcoholic beverages personally. So when I tried Ghia, for example, I couldn't believe the complexities that they put into a beverage like that.

So the space is growing. But in addition to growing, the formulations are getting better and better. Isn't that true?

APG: Yeah, I would definitely agree with that. We actually just talked with Melanie Masarin, from Ghia. And she was talking about her inspiration for starting the product. But just her integrity in terms of the quality of the ingredients she uses, she's very inspired from the Mediterranean, but she's also French and Italian. So nothing in Ghia is fake or superficial. But she also teases the whole concept that, you know, of like fake ingredients or say, people concerned about the sugar content with non-alcoholic beverages. But she was like, there's a difference between synthetic sugar and actual real sugar. And, you know, what she's trying to create and she believes the next forefront of the frontier for non-alcoholic beverage will be with people seeing those quality ingredients, real ingredients over anything processed. And I think that's one of the driving forces behind this, is that we're seeing in the non-alcoholic spirits industry that people are clamoring for an evaluation of quality. And they're basically the industry folks are saying we care about quality.

DA: This isn't just non-alcoholic wine. We want people to be thinking about what are our ingredients? How are we doing this? How are we distilling this? The same way people do with spirits. And I think that's why both our awards and Drinks With Benefits are really resonating.

AM: And, you know, in preparing for discussing the event, so I came up with the notion of things need to be tasty, but also things need to be useful or new and exciting also. So what kind of categories or different types of vendors or drinks are there available at this Drinks With Benefits Festival as this is new to a lot of communities.

APG: The festival is tiered as far as different categories with the space laid out exactly to respond to that, as for a lot of consumers, this is new and we wanted to kind of guide them through the experience.

So upon arrival, they'll get a consumer discovery map where all the non-alcoholic wines are in one area, all the non-alcoholic spirits and bitters are in one area. And then as you go downstairs, you will find the alcohol-free beer garden and then the hemp and functional space. So we've set this up so that they can discover it by category.

AM: That's great. And then there's also immersive wellness experiences as well, right?

APG: Yes. So we partnered with Sage and Sound, whose Upper East Side wellness studio has a meditation experience. And that will be led by Dara Hart, who's a Reiki master and spiritual guide. So we wanted to have, you know, something wellness adjacent within the experience to really bring to life that, you know, drinking less but better is about overall wellness. It's not just about drinks, even though they're a huge part. It's an overarching thing.

And additionally, we will have live podcasting with Samantha Feher from the podcast Caps Lock, who will be covering different topics on wellness; helping educate the consumer on different aspects of wellness; and transparency and ingredients.

AM: And what types of attendees do you foresee coming?

DA: You know, we see it being a mix. This is not an industry event, but we certainly expect some industry folks will be there. But this is primarily a consumer event. We're targeting a bit of a younger demographic. I mean, that's part of it. We just did a big redesign for our website and our app, now called The Daily Pour. And part of the reason for that is our doubling down in the Non-Alc space, but also the fact that we really are trying to target the 25 to 40 year old demo of people, who have expendable income but who care about health and wellness.

And by the way, it doesn't mean that they don't drink alcohol. Right. It just means that for a lot of them, they do drink alcohol. They just are trying to drink less.

AM: That actually leads me into my next question about Gen Z and millennials in particular and whether they're seeing this as a specific intentional choice versus a substitute. So as people are looking to what to imbibe or include in their lifestyle routines, how do you see the difference if there are between different types of consumers that some are just looking for this and others maybe are moderating alcohol consumption?

DA: So we think the targeting is the same. Which is, it's about quality beverages. Whether you are trying to drink less; whether you don't drink at all; whether you are moving from alcohol to hemp; whatever the case may be - we think that the piece that's been missing is focusing on the quality. And that's how we started this business.

We started this as a consumer facing business to say to people, we're going to help you drink whiskey and tequila and rum smarter and better. All we're doing is applying that same philosophy to non-alcohol and functional beverages. So it applies to all of them with regard to and again, that's why I think it's so important that I keep emphasizing that we're doing these awards in conjunction with the event. Because it's the same focus, which is quality. What is the quality? What are the ingredients? Because that's what drinking fine spirits is all about.

AM: And you guys are having a Omakase Food Hall at the event, which I think would get us to go to most events. What's involved with that?

APG: So we wanted to recreate experiences for consumers where they would normally have alcohol, but really show them they could have fun with non-alcoholic and alternative beverages. So we created a pairing experience with well-known restaurants in New York, including the Butcher's Daughter, Ado Lei, and Seatopia. Basically with that VIP ticket, consumers will get to go to two different counters and have a pairing experience where they have a light bite paired with an alternative beverage.

AM: There's also a mixology area for the Drinks With Benefit Festival. What kinds of things would guests be able to mix?

APG: So yes, we have the mixology lab. And we really wanted to bring to life, have a space within the event that made education fun. So The Pathfinder, For Bitter For Worse, FLUÈRE, those are some of the brands that have taken over the space. And they'll be doing education, cocktail making sessions, guided tastings.

The Alchemist Kitchen, which is in Soho, they will do a lot of elixirs, and a guided education with how to make cocktails with different plants and herbs and things like that. It'll be a really fun space for consumers to have a hands-on education or edutainment experience.

AM: For non-alcoholic consumers, are they generally narrow-minded towards the areas they're focused on? Or are they very open-minded, where they would like to try the different categories from beer, to a CBD, to maybe a sparkling spritz or something?

DA: So look, yeah, obviously, it completely depends on the person. There are some people who simply don't want anything that is in any way mind-altering, right? So they don't want functional alternatives. They don't want alcohol. That's one. And that's probably a much smaller base of consumers. There's still people we're appealing to, but they are a much smaller group. The much larger group are the people who drink a little.

They also try functional beverages. They try non-alcohol. They're interested in different areas. There are some folks who only want functional beverages and not alcohol. So it really depends. But what we're finding, based on the studies, is that most of the people who drink these non-alcohol and functional beverages also drink alcohol.

AM: That's super interesting. The space is definitely booming as consumers are finding multiple winners, in multiple categories, as open-minded in trying new things. And there might even be new categories that come out in the future. What are some untapped areas you could see now? Or do you think pretty much we're hitting where we would be for several years to come?

DA: I'd say the untapped is really the increase in the quality and the focus on ingredients. In a way that’s 10 years, 15 years ago, it was, ‘oh it's just a non-alcoholic wine.’ Or hey, I mean, ‘you probably know this from it as a non-alcoholic beer or whatever it is.’ And it's like, ‘OK, is it good? What is it made from?’ So that's the difference.

And I think that's the future in terms of where people are going, which is why we're trying to ride that wave of particularly younger people who have been brought up, focused on quality in a world where the evaluation of quality hasn't been so focused on non-alcoholic spirits.

AM: Sure. And do you see that a lot of these consumers are somewhat sophisticated where the benefits will be worth the price points?

DA: They're becoming more sophisticated. And I think that is the whole philosophy behind what we're doing, is that we're trying to help them become more sophisticated. We're the place that can say to them, we know you want to be more sophisticated. Now let us help you get there in a really accessible way.

AM: Yeah. Master edutainer, Dan. I see that totally. I learn stuff from all your other groundbreaking shows, I just know a couple of things what to do, not to do now because of you.

DA: My strengths are condensing complicated information into a pretty simple and accessible way to say it. We're kind of doing the same thing here with drinks. We are taking a confusing world of drinks and trying to make it a lot more understandable and to help them make choices.

And that's not completely dissimilar from what I do in my TV world. Sure. And then also some humor here and there.

AM: Totally. So and then after New York, are there other cities you're looking to take this festival to?

DA: Yeah, we haven't figured it out. I mean, we definitely are thinking about doing more. We want to first get this one under our belts before we start actively planning the next one. We want to see what went right, what went wrong, where could we improve? And that will help us determine, should we do another one in New York? Should we think about one in a different city? Our whiskey and tequila events, we're seeing great success recently in launches in some smaller cities like Scottsdale, Arizona or Austin, Texas and places like that. And so would that be our next? I don't know yet.

New York is a big swing. You know, and honestly, if we weren't kind of first to market on this, we probably wouldn't have started in New York. But I think that's why we felt comfortable starting in New York, because we were stunned that this hasn't existed yet.

AM: Tell us more about The Daily Pour, the organizers of the Drinks With Benefits Festival.

DA: Yeah, it's a consumer guide to drinking better. And so it has what we do - we have an app that aggregates reviews and ratings, some of which we do, some of which is from other places. But it allows it to be a kind of one stop shop to tell you, is this any good? I mean, I use it all the time when I'm thinking about buying a whiskey or something, because it allows me to see numerous aggregated reviews. And a lot of these are enthusiasts who've done reviews who might not have put a number on it. And we translate it into a number.

So the app is very useful. The website covers different issues in the spirits industry. We've recently been focusing on one particular beverage in a particular week or a particular month, which is another new thing we've done.

But, you know, the Daily Pour literally went live two days ago (formerly Bottle Raiders). And it's just a fundamentally different vibe. Bottle Raiders was initially designed based on a whiskey drinker.. And now you're in a much brighter, more vibrant place because we want it to be more inclusive of the non-alcoholic and wellness community as well.

APG: I think The Daily Pour is meeting the consumer where they are today, covering cross categories. So it's covering ‘I do still want to drink, but I want to drink better.’ So it's covering spirits. Also, it’s ‘I want to have that great margarita, but I don't want to have that during the week.’ Additionally it’s covering functional beverages, ‘and I want to learn about Non-Alc.” So I think that a lot of the other websites treat Non-Alc and alternative beverages like a footnote. Like it's really hard to find them. If you go to certain websites, they have it hidden under culture. I'm like, I don't know how anyone would find that. So we don't want to treat it like that.

I think about the scoring. I think that's extremely helpful to have this kind of meta score, our signature rating system that aggregates everyone's point of view and just gives space that is sometimes hard to understand.

AM: And the app is free. Are there premium plans to it or features?

APG: Yes, and then if you get the premium subscription, that's like $5 a month. And what are the benefits of that, so it saves your taste list. You get access to certain events and kind of discounts on certain things that we offer, exclusive content, things like that.

AM: That's terrific. And I also wanted to ask about Ev & Em Vineyards, Dan.

DA: So Ev & Em is a winery that I acquired in early 2021. It was right in the heart of COVID and the winery owners had kind of given up in COVID. And I had a friend who is one of the pioneers of the North Fork wine scene who called me and said, hey, you mentioned that you were interested in buying a winery. Were you serious? And I said, yeah, I was serious. Because I told you if I ever saw something really interesting that I would let you know.

And this is really interesting. It has one of the oldest planted vineyards on the North Fork. It has a beautiful location. It just needs some love. It needs some new thoughts about how to do the winemaking. And you could have an A-list vineyard.

And he was right. Even by the ‘22 Vintage, which was released in some of it in ‘23, some of it only now for the Reds, we're creating luxury wines in Long Island. So these are wines that we think can compete with California, Oregon, Washington, et cetera, in really all varietals. And so that's been super exciting!

AM: And there are multiple offerings. There's a Reserve, correct?

DA: There is. Yeah, we're making everything from Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris. I mean, we've got a whole range of offerings.

And in some of those, we have a Reserve. So depending on the year, for example in ‘22, we had a number of Reserve wines on the Reds, some of which actually haven't even been released yet. But our Reserve Red ‘22, super proud of that.

‘23 was a tougher year for us, but ‘24 was amazing. So we're very confident about that ‘24 Vintage that's coming out. And ‘25 looks great as well.

Nicoline Roth is the Founder/CEO of this studio. She was born and raised in Copenhagen where she enjoyed hiking in the mountains in the Summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. Her workouts were rooted in nature, connection, and simplicity.

Nordic Strong's flagship studio opened in Copenhagen in November 2022. Every part of the brand - from the design to the name - reflects a deep connection to the Nordic “way of life.” Nordic speaks to the founder's roots in nature, movement, and a culture that prioritizes wellness, simplicity, and balance. It's about a mindset as opposed to a geographical reference. Strong refers to both the physical and mental elements. In addition to building physical strength in these classes, it's important to have inner strength, presence, confidence, and community that their training style and physical space help to cultivate.

There are 3 class formats which are different in style and intensity, but are centered around their patented fitness machine inspired by cross-country skiing.

Nordic Strong is their signature class that fuses strength with high energy, offering a full-body workout that combines intervals on the machine with floor-based work using dumbbells.

Nordic Cardio turns up the pace and is rooted in endurance-style training and focuses on getting your heart rate up through fast-paced intervals. You move between the machine and dynamic bodyweight exercises, and it’s all about boosting cardiovascular fitness and stamina.

Nordic Sculpt shifts into a slower, more controlled gear. It focuses on precision, balance, and deep muscle activation. The movements are inspired by Pilates and are designed to strengthen the muscles you don’t always target in high-intensity workouts. Every session ends with breathwork to help reset and ground you before heading back into your day.

The studio is intentional by design. The lounge and reception area are light, calm, and welcoming, furnished with Scandanavian design pieces that make it feel elevated but still cozy. Once you step into the training room, it’s darker, more focused, and designed to help you lock into your workout.

The lighting is inspired by the Northern Lights and changes throughout the class in intensity and color, emulating the parallel physical journey throughout a session.

FOOTBALL + FILM | TAYE DIGGS

After coming off of a full summer which is filled with food, events, and friends, the Fall continues our ability to enjoy staying outside and thankfully with Football season, it gives us a lot of reasons to enjoy games in the stadium, tailgating outside of it, and even having events in our homes. We caught up with actor Taye Diggs (How Stella Got Her Groove Back, The Best Man franchise, All-American) to talk about what he loves about football season, how he enjoys taking in this season's games, his partnership with Lysol and upcoming projects that we'll want to keep an eye out for!

ATHLEISURE MAG: When did you realize that you wanted to be an actor?

TAYE DIGGS: When I saw my mother on stage, she went from being my mother into this other person that I didn't know in front of all these people watching her. I was so taken aback and impressed, scared, curious. That was all it took.

AM: We're in the midst of football season - from watching game day with friends whether that’s at the game or elsewhere, tailgating, and just having good vibes. What do you love about football season?

TD: I like going over to a pal's house and watching the game and eating various sundry snacks. I like it a lot better now because I don't have to worry about germs as much because I use Lysol® Air Sanitizer. I used to be one of those people that would just glare at people that used to cough - people don't like to be around that. So I don't have to worry as much and I can enjoy the game and the company without worrying about getting sick. I don't like getting colds and it's that simple.

AM: What are your go-to watch party must-haves when you're watching the game and who are you cheering for?

TD: No specific team, I’m with my son and we like players. That's what the young people are into these days, I don't know that I agree with it, but it's not worth the argument with my son. So when we watch the players, I make sure that the fridge is stocked and that nobody gets too out of hand. I don't like when fights break out. So people know not to bring that mess into my house.

TD: I thought I knew a little bit about football before that role and realized that I knew nothing about football. I gained a ridiculous amount of respect for professional athletes because we were exposed to so many and the intelligence that these athletes have that people assume they don't. Which is really, really cool. Getting to understand something that you thought you knew. Being able to yell at all these young people, that's a situation where pretending was really, really fun because that is so far from who I am as a person. Which is one of the reasons why I took the role and it was so much fun because in this career, a lot of times you play characters that are kind of close to you and this one wasn't, and I really had a great time.

AM: You're always working on a number of amazing projects. The first film I remember seeing you in was How Stella Got Her Groove Back and I know that you are working on another project from Terry McMillan, Forever on Lifetime. What do you love about her work? Tell me about Forever.

TD: They're great stories and that's where all of this begins. If you don't have this story, for me, you don't have anything. That's where my interest begins. I've had experiences with her, so it was a no brainer. What was interesting about this film was I got to kind of chronicle how far I've come from How Stella Got Her Groove Back and that was kind of cool. I'm a different actor, the way I approach a role, all of that was different, and I noticed it. So that was cool.

AM: Do you have any other upcoming projects that you would like to share that we should keep an eye out for?

TD: I'm a judge on this new show coming out called Second Chance Stage where it gives performers that had a dream and put their dream by the wayside another chance to pursue this dream. It's very eye opening, it's very emotional. These folks are terribly talented and we were put in the positions to give them more opportunities and it was kind of life altering.

WOAH! | JOEY LAWRENCE

For those of us that grew up in the 90s, many of us remember watching Blossom and Joey Lawrence with his "whoa" catch phrase. He appeared in a number of series throughout this time as well as maintaining a music career, going on Broadway and of course being The Walrus on Season 8 of Masked Singer!

We wanted to take some time to catchup with him to find out about his career, the importance of oral care, his podcast with his brothers Matthew (Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Mrs Doubtfire, Hawaii Five-O) and Andy (Bean, NCIS: Los Angeles, Hawaii Five-O) as well as his upcoming movie and other projects!

ATHLEISURE MAG: You've had a great career that has included Gimmie A Break!, Blossom, being on Broadway in Chicago as Billy Flynn, The Masked Singer, and more! What do you love about being an entertainer?

JOEY LAWRENCE: It's always been sort of my calling and I was very lucky at a young age to have an opportunity to explore that passion of mine. My mom was just influential in seeing that love that I had for the arts and just going, alright, let's see if we can make this happen. It just came about in the most amazing way, and then being able to go to New York and audition for commercials at the age of five years old, and get a lot of those commercials and then go on the Johnny Carson Show and have the reaction be what it was on that and lead to a deal with NBC, which led to give me a break and all the other shows that I ended up doing. It was just sort of an amazing thing that happened and 43 years later, to be able to still doing it, is truly a remarkable thing, quite a journey.

AM: What have been three of your favorite moments in your career that made you smile?

JL: The explosion of the whole WHOA thing on Blossom and the whole Teen Idol thing was an amazing moment. I know a lot of people sometimes look back on that stuff as not so great when they experienced it, but for me, it was really amazing. The fact that I'm able to still work even past all that is great. It was that explosion, and still to this day, all these years later, two decades later, people still walking around saying that word and how it still has transcended time. It's seen all over popular vernacular today. That was a pretty cool moment to have that happen to a character that I played become so iconic like that. Being on Broadway was great. The whole different world of being able to utilize my love for singing and acting at the same time was really great. Also, having a number one record was really cool, writing a song at 16 - having a hit number one on the charts. Experiencing that was great and the other top moments are hopefully yet to come.

AM: Achieving a great smile means that you make your oral care a priority. Why did you partner with LISTERINE?

JL: Well, to me, LISTERINE truly is the benchmark of oral care. I actually use LISTERINE – it's been in every medicine cabinet in my house growing up, and now is in my home and used by kids.

AM: What is your oral care routine and how did you turn your woes into "Whoas"?

JL: I have red, irritated gums, so I religiously care for my whole mouth. I use an electric powered toothbrush and I floss basically almost after every meal, but certainly in the morning and at night. AM: It seems like you and your brothers - Matthew and Andy continue the good vibes, smiles, and fun conversations with your podcast, Brotherly Love. Why did you want to launch it in this format and what can we expect when we're tuning in?

JL: That's what we do. I mean, our thing is just escapism, right? We want people to come in and just have some fun, take your mind off of things. I feel so many times people forget the the true essence of entertainment, which is to entertain, and we get bogged down in making it mirror exactly what's going on in our lives. But so many times, I don't want to watch something that's mirroring exactly what I'm going through, because that's life. I want to have a little bit of escapism. People have never really seen us like this, which is kind of cool. When we've worked together in our careers, it's always been with scripts. This is no scripts. This is actually how our inner dynamics are and we're dinner table conversation, we're not a specific podcast based on a certain idea or ideology. We talk about anything and everything that friends and family would talk about over a dinner table. I think that's what's really been the reaction so far and why people have enjoyed it so much. We never really thought it was going to turn into this. We really did it during the COVID lockdowns to just have something to do because like everybody, we thought the world was ending, and we got to do something. The reaction to it has been incredible. To see the rise of this little baby pod, the pod that could as we say, has been humbling. It's been really, really neat. I think we're like the 45th ranked pod overall, which is really crazy. There's like 5 million pods out there. So, you know, this little pod that me and my bros do to have this much love thrown at it, it just really feels great. We're just so thankful the community that supports us is pretty dope.

AM: Tell us about your upcoming film, Heart Attack.

JL: We’re doing it with Fox and Tubi. Big action movie, which I'm excited about. I haven't done a lot of action - I did a little bit on Hawaii Five-O and CSI New York, but I really haven't although I've loved that genre so much. Big fan of Die Hard and these movies growing up as a kid so to be able to jump into this sort of genre is going to be really, really cool. It's a nonstop juggernaut from page one with a clock that ticks – your classic action movie stakes, but it really is cool. it's all set in the hospital. It's going to be a lot of fun. My baby brother, Andrew, is actually going to direct it, which is gonna be fun because he's a great director. We're gonna have a lot of fun. We're going to shoot that later this year, and really looking forward to it.

AM: How do you take time for yourself when you're not focused on projects, navigating personal and family schedules, etc?

JL: You just have to make the time, right? Life is about making time for things, that's what you got to do. It's easy to say we don't have time, right? It's easy to say, Oh, I don't have time to get that workout in, or I don't have time to floss. You have to figure out a way to do it. There's always time. I feel like where there's a will, there's a way. I live my life like that - we'll figure it out. There's a way to figure something out, I don't ever feel like nothing is, you know, can't be accomplished if we put our minds to it, just figure it out. So I try to live my life that way every day and you know, I fail sometimes, like everybody, but I also succeed sometimes. When you succeed, it feels good and that motivates you to continue to work hard and try to fit everything in. That's what I try to do.

AM: Are there any upcoming projects that we should keep an eye out for that you would like to share?

JL: There's a lot of exciting stuff going on. We have a sequel to our Christmas movie that we did together, the brothers and I, Mistletoe Mixup, which was actually the number one Christmas movie on Amazon in 2021. The sequel is coming out later this year, so we're excited about that. It's actually funnier than the first one, it really is, so we're very excited because he first one again, we did it sort of as an independent project, and Amazon picked it up, and then it just did so well. It was their number one movie for Christmas a year and a half ago. So, then we were like, wow, well, we got to try to make it good now. So, you know, the sequel, we had a lot more time to do it and we're excited about it. So that's coming out. We're actually working on a scripted series together for the first time, since like the early 2000s, which is crazy. That is something that is in the late stages, so we're excited about that. There's a couple other exciting things that will be on tap soon, but you know, and I'm working with LISTERINE, so that's like top of the top and super excited.

BRAIN HEALTH IS KEY | ALTON BROWN

This month, we had the pleasure to sit down and talk with Chef Alton Brown who is known as a TV Personality, super informative food scientist, author, voice actor, and cinematographer. Growing up, we enjoyed watching Food Network's Good Eats so much, which examined the origins of ingredients, and shares culinary customs and shared recipes with us. In addition, we enjoyed watching him host Iron Chef America on the network as well as Netflix's Iron Chef: Quest For An Iron Legend.

His passion behind the science of food, as well as its history, is always exciting to learn about. We took some time to find out about brain health, how he got into the industry and his partnership with Neuriva.

ATHLEISURE MAG: I have been a fan of your work ever since 1999 when I saw the first episode of Good Eats on Food Network!

ALTON BROWN: Oh wow! You were in grade school?

AM: Hmm ’99, I was in college!

AB: It’s funny, it still sounds recent. When I hear someone say 1999, I’m like that’s not too far away!

AM: Same! I was born in ’79 so I don’t feel it’s that far away!

AB: I graduated from high school in ’79!

AM: We’re always talking about health – fitness, gut, mental, and we don’t always get to brain health. But that is an important component as well. Why is it important to you?

AB: Well I really started to think about it a lot when I was thinking about the fact that I was going to turn 60 soon. I studied nutrition so much and I have read so much about it – I have probably forgotten a lot but, I hadn’t really spent a lot of time thinking about what my brain actually needed from me from a culinary standpoint, a supplemental standpoint, an exercise standpoint, or any standpoint. So I started doing a fair amount of research from a few years ago reading peer review papers and I have always enjoyed research. When I got a call from Neuriva, I was like, I already know what is in there, because I have already read papers on ashwagandha and papers on NeuroFactor and so it was very clear to me very quickly that they were very into the science, as was I. That’s how that started and that’s how I got interested in learning about what brains need and they are very complex organs. They do need things and a lot of what it is that they need, is that we need to feed them. The rest, I think supplementally helps.

For me, I break it down into exercise, quality sleep – which most of us do not get – as sleep is gigantic and really almost more important than exercise, nutrition, and what I call – brain stretching. For me, I always need to be in a state of always learning about something that I don’t know. It’s about studying and not just reading for fun. I have to have the ability to actively acquire information.

AM: Yeah, like putting the pieces together.

AB: Right, or my brain gets lazy. It does the equivalent of cracking a beer and sitting down in front of the TV if it’s not actively learning. That’s my brain – not me!

AM: Of course not you!

AB: I’m not a beer person!

And the other part is supplements. When I was studying nutrition from a brain standpoint, I thought there are a lot of things that I would like to get, but it’s just hard to get in food. You can, but not easily because you would have to eat a whole lot of something that you don’t want to. So I break it down into those 5 parts. I try to learn and now that I am in my 60’s, I need to try to learn enough so that my brain can continue to go for perhaps a little while longer.

AM: So what is Neuriva?

AB: You mean the actual supplement itself?

AM: Yes!

AB: Well, there are several of them. They have different things in them, but really, it’s a matter of adding, so the original Neuriva has this thing called NeuroFactor which is an extract from coffee berries – not the seeds, the berries. It also has Phosphatidylserine which is a phospholipid which supports cell membranes especially in the brain. So those 2 chemicals together – originally they were obtained from animal sources and then someone figured out how to get them from soybeans so it’s vegetable derived now. But those 2 things together formed a core of the two nutrients that I was interested in that I couldn’t just get.

You can get coffee berries for your beverage, but you need a lot and I’d rather take them in this supplement. On top of that I don’t really like the way that it tastes. For the Phosphatidylserine, it’s just almost impossible to get. So, those 2 things help you do maintenance for connectivity and cell membranes and then they added Neuriva Plus which brought B6 and B12 to they party. They are very symbiotic vitamins for brain health with those others. Then when Ultra came out, that added an extract from a member of the ginger family – Galangal – there are 4 different kinds of Galangals in the ginger family. They are wonderful for enhancing alertness. I like that one because it also works symbiotically with caffeine. It doesn’t have caffeine, but it works with it and I am a coffee person, so I have moved to that. It’s the same package plus the B Vitamins, plus that extract so it’s kind of like, you can get the base model or the extra! Of course when they come out with their next one, I don’t know! Because now that they have used Ultra, I told them to be careful about that as when it's out, what are you going to do? I mean what’s next, Super Ultra?

AM: Just hearing you talk about how you delve into the base parts of how things come together, how did you come to the culinary industry?

AB: I was a filmmaker, cinematographer, and director for TV commercials. I watched food shows and back in the late 80’s and the 90’s, I thought that they were boring and I knew that I wasn’t really learning anything. It was like, I have another recipe, great. But I don’t know why and I don’t know why any of this works?

I wanted shows that were more exciting and more visual. I wanted to know more on why that was going on and no one wanted to make that show.

So I quit and I went to culinary school. When I went to culinary school, I realized that they weren’t going to show me why either. Luckily, there was another college in this little town I went to for culinary school in Vermont and they had a library that we could use. So they would publish their chemistry reading list and I just went and started studying it because unfortunately, science is the answer to just about everything. There’s a science play everywhere, not necessarily for matters of the heart, but everything else.

So I think that I got addicted in a way that was chemical to telling those stories and to get people excited and to get people to be curious. It sparked in me a curiosity engine that I wouldn’t want to turn off.

AM: We love hearing about people's routines! What are 3 things that they enjoy doing, having, enjoying/being in the Morning, Afternoon, and at Night. We call this 63MIX ROUTIN3S.

AB: This has very much come out of my brain studies.

AM: I assumed!

AB: As a matter of fact, I'm not naturally a routine person. The only routine that I used to have was that I will stumble out somewhere and I will find coffee. When I went to bed, where I got to bed – at that time, everything was about work. I would work until 4 in the morning and then when I got up, I did it all over again.

So now with this routine that I have, it's about sleep and I have a bed time! I have a bed time. I have a bed hour that I have to get to bed during. Somewhere between 10:30 and 11:30, I must be in bed.

I can’t look at a screen at least 2 hours before then. It screws up everything. I can read, but it has to be a book. I have to get that sleep!

I also have a time that I get up and it’s no later than 6:30 in the morning. Because the morning to me is like stolen time it’s before you have to do things for other people. I’m working on my first collection of essays and memoirs stuff right know which has been a very challenging thing right now. I write better in the morning and I edit what I wrote at night better at this time. So that's a very big one.

My wife and I, Elizabeth, do not eat after 8pm at night. If that’s not enforced, you automatically set a clock where it forces at least a 15 hour break for the next day which puts me off my schedule for breakfast!

And then the other thing that I won't call a routine is that I used to say, ok, I'm going to workout. It's like, I have to put on clothes that I don't like.

AM: No 3-piece suits!

AB: It depends! I knew that it would be an hour and a half and that I would hate it. So instead, I have learned to break it up into chunks. I do micro workouts! I try to do 3 of them everyday. One of them has to be weight related. It doesn’t have to be a lot of weight.

One of them has to be 100% cardio. It can be fast - or when we're in NY, we have an apartment here and we live in Atlanta. If there is a coffeeshop that I want to go to like when we have our apartment here in NY, as opposed to picking the one on our block, I’ll pick one that is 3 miles away. So I earn -

AM: You earn that coffee!

AB: Yes! So there's always a cardio, there's always a weightlifting and this is going to sound so stupid, but my wife read this book called Breathe and convinced me that the entirety of my life, I had been breathing wrong. I don’t meditate because it makes me fall asleep, but I literally stop and work on nothing but breathing for half an hour.

AM: Breathwork is so important!

AB: Well I never knew that! I just thought that is was eh?

AM: I started doing it about a year ago and it really is effective!

AB: I was like, I'm already breathing! But the truth is, I'm a scuba diver and when I got the scuba diving training when I was much much younger, breath control was such a huge huge part of making your air last and not sinking all of the time, so it reminded me of that training that I went through and it's incredibly effective both mentally and physically! Two years ago, I wouldn't have been into it!

AM: It has been such a pleasure to chat with you and to be able to meet you and being such a fan of Good Eats as well as other shows that you have been on!

We enjoyed interviewing Alton and in addition to having time to talk with him, we enjoyed an intimate dinner party with him and the Neuriva team that would fuel our brain health.

Over our four course dinner at Hearth, Chef Marco Canora's (founder of Bone Broth brand, Brodo) Tuscan-American farm-to-table restaurant in the East Village of NYC, Alton walked us through each of the dishes! Of course, he provided the science behind them and why they are effective. Our first course was the Ribollita. It's an honor to share some select notes highlighted by Chef Alton from this special dinner.

AB: I’m so excited that we’re sharing this intimate dinner party together and as we enjoy our various courses, I’m going to tell you a bit about the brain nutrients that are involved in the dishes that we’re going to enjoy! The brain needs a number of nutrients for its health and you can get those outside of a supplementary way. One of the ingredients is coffee berries – I like coffee but I don’t like the berries and I’m not a fan of the taste and another one is Phosphatidylserine which is a lipid, a phospholipid that we used to get from brains in animals and now we get them from soybeans. It helps to build and maintain cell membranes and I want this stuff, I need to get this, and I can’t get enough of it in food. Then, all of a sudden there was the original Neuriva formula which I believe only contained those two things. So I knew it was the supplement for me as I wouldn’t be able to get enough of it in food.

So not too long after that, I was called up by them and I thought yes, get your scientists on the phone because I want to talk about white papers and everything. So it happened very naturally to partner with Neuriva and it’s been a couple of great years. I have been taking the product for awhile now and Ultra happens to be my favorite because it works really nicely when the caffeine hits.

We have a very stimulating evening ahead and we also have what I like to call instead of a Tasting Menu, a Thinking Menu as we talk about food. Everybody knows what the Mediterranean Diet (Editor’s Note: The Mediterranean Diet is a diet inspired by the eating habits and traditional food typical of southern Spain, southern Italy, and Crete, and formulated in the early 1960s.) is as it can be a bit loosey goosey and sexy and cool. It has had some great effects. From that is another diet that emerged from it known as the DASH Diet (Editor’s Note: Known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, it is a flexible and balanced eating plan that helps create a heart-healthy eating style for life) that some of you may not have heard of that is a version of the Mediterranean Diet that was designed specifically for people that were fighting hypertension problems. So if anyone with us was in the 80s we used to have these things called Graphic Equalizer Stereos that turned things up and down on different parts of the soundwave and that’s what that diet did. It went for the hypertension part and removed salt and then it did some other things. Then in the 2015, Martha Clare Morris came up with the MIND Diet (Editor’s Note: Known as The Mediterranean – DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay Diet combines portions of the DASH Diet and the Mediterranean Diet which have been shown to improve cognition) and it takes the same componentry of the Mediterranean Diet and changing it up for our brains. What would our brains want out of that diet? It’s a little bit different as it emphasizes some other components that might not have been as focused as much. For instance, all the diets have fruit! No one is going to talk bad about fruit. The MIND Diet says, you know what? The brain really wants dark berries. Blueberries - eat your blueberries. Have more olive oil, eat more leafy greens. No one is going to say anything bad about these things either. The MIND Diet has more poultry, even more than fish! There is a substance in poultry called choline (Editor’s Note: Found in poultry, this prevents abnormal storage of fat in the liver, which ensures proper body metabolism and efficient utilization of nutrients. It also supports the proper functioning of the nervous system and ensures its harmony.) which is really hard to get anywhere else, but in good lean, protein meat. Choline has a lot to do with enhancing the way that phospholipids work in the brain and our membranes as well. The good news is that unlike other diets, red wine is on the MIND Diet currently. There is some research for that. Tonight, we’re going to eat 4 courses. We’ll try to enhance and bring to the party, some of those foods that are incorporated into the MIND Diet and we’ll talk about it course by course as we go through it.

We are very fortunate to be at this restaurant! Hearth is one of the best restaurants in NY and I have known Chef Marco Canora for many years. There are brilliant, brilliant cooks here. Chef Michael Keough is here tonight and I hope he will come in and say something to us in a bit. I had some questions for him this morning and he was so gracious about answering about things that are on tonight’s menu.

Our first course is going to be a soup called Ribollita. If anybody has spent time in Tuscany, this is a soup that you would have seen there. It's a basic - I hate to say the word the word but here it comes – rustic soup. What this one does is it’s going to hit one of the major notes and chords of the MIND Diet – beans! When we talk about green beans, we’re also talking about dry beans. This is a bean soup in vegetable stock and we will be enjoying those vegetables tonight! There will be carrots, there are some onions, and I believe there is some cabbage in there. This also has some sage and garlic infusion. The cool thing about this in its traditional form, is that is bread based. It is thickened usually with moistened bread and always served with crisp, giant croutons on top. There is also a dusting of parmesan cheese. But most of the flavor will be coming from those beans. That’s going to guarantee that we are getting those beans that we want. Of course you can enjoy the bread as well as the olive oil which is also perfect for this diet as well.

We enjoyed this hearty soup which was flavorful and nourishing. It really set the stage for the next portion of our meal which was a Pizzocheri, a ribbon pasta.

AB: As we continue on in the MIND Diet, the next course is a Pizzocheri. We don’t talk much about mushrooms in brain health and brain support, but there’s a lot of research that suggests that we should be focusing on them a lot more. They’re good for our bodies, our planet, and our brains. This Pizzocheri is topped with a little bit of fontina cheese and what we’re getting is some great vegetation with the cabbage and some brain healthy mushrooms that are not currently listed on the MIND Diet, but I think that they will be in the next few years and a whole grain pasta which is a perfectly acceptable way to get your grains.

This was yet another dish from the night that was filling an full of nutrients that are beneficial to our health. We all agreed that this was something that we would enjoy eating throughout the winter! Where the first, second and the fourth course are dishes that are currently on Hearth's menu, but were adjusted to have the brain health specific ingredients that are part of the MIND Diet, our third course is a recipe from Alton Brown that we were excited to try as we know his love for chicken!

AB: We are at the Main Course event for tonight! This is my recipe and it is actually a conglomeration of two of my spatchcock recipes. I like to cut the back of my chickens – some people call it butterflying, I think that spatchcock is far more sexy! So this features a couple of Middle Eastern spices that I am a big fan of, Aleppo pepper and Za’atar that I know that you all are very very familiar with. So we’re getting our poultry in which is definitely on this diet. But also, we’re taking in our greens from another chicken dish of mine, a Sesame Glazed Dark Greens which it is being served with it tonight. I believe we’re going to have a Black Kale and 2 other greens, I’m not sure what they ended up with tonight, but it is 3 very different organic greens. They have been sauteed and it’s whatever they got from the market today. The sauce is a straight forward pan sauce that are the drippings from the chicken with a little bit of butter and poured right over the chicken. This is something that I like to do once I got into the MIND set of the MIND Diet which is combining various things that were in the diet to support each other. I love chicken, it’s my favorite meat. There are days where I don’t want to eat my greens and I try to hide them – I will tell you that! But because they are brought together by the lemon glaze with sesame, it unites the dish in a really handy way! So I hope you enjoy it and smell it!

Without a doubt, this is a chicken that we could have again and again! The greens were also something that we want to put in our rotation as well! We have the recipe for both of these dishes that you can make for yourself for Alton's Butterflied Chicken with Aleppo and Za’atar as well as his Lemon Sesame Glazed Greens!

Of course, we ended this amazing meal with dessert and enjoyed a Tangerine Almond Cake.

AB: Dessert! Believe it or not, on the MIND Diet, desserts can be had especially when they contain nuts! Nuts are a big part of this diet because nuts have a lot of fantastic fats that are not only good for your body, but also for your brain. It’s the phytochemicals that are still being studied as we speak. This is an almond with most of the cream off to the side and kumquats. Of course, they are a great source of Vitamin C and so this is a dessert in the Italian style where the accent is really on the flavor of the ingredients rather than an added sweetness. Enjoy!

We enjoyed being able to chat with Alton as well as to be invited to his dinner party to enjoy a great meal as well as one that benefits our brain health!

It’s cold and flu season, and don’t you wish your symptoms would just magically disappear? ATHLEISURE MAG: When did you fall in love with being entertainers, magicians, and comedians?

PENN & TELLER: We both started working before we met each other, and Teller was doing magic when he was five. I started juggling and doing shows when I was 12.

AM: What was the moment that you realized that you wanted to work together?

P & T: We met through a mutual friend during a show, and Teller was still a high school teacher outside of Trenton. I don't know if we ever really decided to work together, I think it's still on a trial basis.

AM: You have your Vegas residency at Rio at the Penn & Teller Theater! What does it mean to you to be able to perform on stage and what are some of your favorite memories?

P & T: All we ever wanted to do are tricks for people, and I also have all the love in the world for Vegas, but we don't care that we’re in Vegas. I mean, it's our home now and we do a lot with the community. But we want to be wherever the Penn and Teller theater is. We will be there. We just love doing the show every night. I mean, it's what we do.

AM: What are 3 of your favorite tricks?

P & T: That's really difficult! I'd have to say the three newest. The next thing we're working on is what I think we're always most excited about. I think everybody's kind of like that.

AM: You are so busy from your residency, to your show Fool Us on the CW, and all of your appearances, how do you approach your health and wellness while you are on tour?

P & T: We try the best we can to eat well, I'm a vegan so that helps a little bit. We also try to get rest and do that kind of stuff. I'm pretty conscientious about not doing anything else when I'm on the road. When you're on the road, you're not traveling. You're doing shows and that's a different thing.

AM: Why did you partner with Mucinex and how have you made Mr. Mucus disappear?

P & T: It is actually a product that I use, which is very important. I didn't choose Mucinex, my doctor did! Mucinex also offered us to do a live show in Grand Central Station, which is really fun. Its cold and flu season and we all just want those pesky cough and cold symptoms to disappear, so we jumped at the chance to make Mr. Mucus - the epitome of mucus, cough, and congestion go poof! As to how we made him disappear - well it was either smoke or mirrors, one of the two.

AM: Tell us about your Grand Central Terminal Vanderbilt Hall event that took place on Feb 7th?

P & T: It was nice! It was back to our old street performing days. I like people just wandering in as they're walking by. It's kind of a nice thing.

AM: We have used Mucinex for well over a decade. Why is Mucinex 12-Hour your go-to for cough and chest congestion?

P & T: It’s what my doctor recommended! Mucinex 12 hour DM is always our go-to for cough and chest congestion, the last thing you need when you’re trying to present on stage. AM: Tell us about Fool Us as it has been going on for 10 seasons! What is the format of this show and what is it like to work with various celebs that have appeared in the episodes with you?

P & T: Well for those who don't know, it's a show where the best magicians in the world come on. We don't know who it’s going to be. So they do a trick for us and they do it once, and if we can’t figure out their trick, then they win. And it's really that simple and also that impossible. It's a wonderful feeling. You get into magic not because you want to fool people, but because you want to be fooled. And we luckily have a whole organization in place just to find people who can give us that feeling of wonder.
