HOLIDAY EATS | CHEF DAVID ROSE

December 19, 2025

We love this time of year when we sit down with our friends and family to share meals and memories with! We always enjoy when we take a moment to sit down with Chef David Rose to find out how we can best approach the holiday season. From tips for tackling Turkey Day, prepping before the big day, and hacks that we need to assist us - he keeps us in the loop on what we need to know and some of his favorites with Omaha Steaks.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What do you enjoy about the holiday season?

CHEF DAVID ROSE: I love creating new memories with families, eating my mom’s amazing food, cooking for my family, and sharing the love of food, good times, and a great game of Taboo.

AM: Where does the preparation process start for you as we would imagine that we shouldn’t start on the actual holiday dinner, party, etc that we are hosting?

CHEF DR: The preparation starts at least 3-4 days before the actual holiday to allow for thawing of the turkey, marinating of meats and proteins, and making desserts. That way, on the actual day of the holiday, I can focus on bigger items like the turkey, the roast, the jerk chicken, etc.

AM: How can we take recipes that are our go-to in our family to merge the traditional elements of it while putting a bit of a twist on it?

CHEF DR: To elevate the traditional recipes with the classic dishes like turkey, ham, roast, I would recommend you use a beautiful glaze using preserves and herbs and add a nice wine like an Omaha Steaks’ cabernet to the gravy.

I’d also recommend roasting vegetables to bring out natural caramelization and sweetness in the vegetables. Finally, I love adding bacon to deep fried Brussel sprouts.

AM: What’s the biggest holiday hack that we need to know about to make holiday meal planning easier!

CHEF DR: The biggest tip is to plan ahead! Simplify holiday meal planning with Omaha Steaks. Keep your freezer stocked all season long with high-quality beef, poultry, pork, seafood, easy-to-prepare side dishes, and desserts. From full holiday meals to heat-and-serve options, Omaha Steaks delivers everything you need to plan and enjoy a stress-free holiday season.

AM: When we’re attending someone else’s holiday dinner or meal, what should we bring as a gift?

CHEF DR: I would recommend being thoughtful and asking your host what he or she needs you to bring and use that as a prompt. Personally, I would say a bottle of wine or your favorite spirit and a dessert.

AM: The best part of enjoying a holiday meal is the leftovers! What tips do you have to re-imagine our favorite portions of the meal in a new way?

CHEF DR: You can’t go wrong with a turkey sandwich – but you can make a variety of sandwiches including adding turkey to your grilled cheese. I also like to dice the protein and add it to my eggs for breakfast. I’ll also add turkey to fried rice or make egg rolls with turkey.

ATHLEISURE LIST | CASA SOL AT MAXX ROYAL BODRUM RESORT

December 16, 2024

It's officially time to think about planning our vacations for 2025 and we can see staying at Maxx Royal Bodrum Resort in Mugla, Turkey and eating at Casa Sol which opened in May of 2024.

Casa Sol is a concept collaboration between the resort and the F&B team with Corporate Chef Naoki Katori leading culinary and Shavinraj "Sha" Gopinath along with global consultancy Proof Creative which focuses on the drinks. The design of he bar and restaurant was led by GEO_ID.

This concept is situated just steps from the beach with dazzling views, Casa Sol transforms from a tranquil scene for a quiet breakfast into a relaxed locale for lunch in between dips in the ocean and a sophisticated nightlife venue as the sun goes down and the vibes pick up. The venue is entirely al fresco, with a mix of bar and restaurant seating for all group sizes.

The cuisine at Casa Sol is progressive Latin, merging traditional recipes with original elements to create an eclectic mix of dishes. The Chef de Cuisine José L. Castañeda Neri is an accomplished chef with a passion for innovative, high-end cuisine and has over a decade of experience in luxury hospitality.

For Breakfast, we suggest: Chilaquiles, which are corn chips cooked in a rich molcajete tomato sauce topped with sour cream, white cheese, avocado, cilantro and fried egg. For Lunch: Pescado Zarandeado, which is grilled seabream rubbed with chilies adobo served with citrus micro salad. For Dinner: Blackened Rib Eye, which is ribeye crusted with recado negro served with roasted eggplant puree, broccolini, roasted onion, chiles toreados & tortillas.

Casa Sol’s signature cocktail menu is split into two sections Sun Hats (lighter, more refreshing daytime options) and Shoulder Pads (features slightly more complex, spirit-forward drinks designed to enjoy into the evening), a nod to the 1980s beach town nostalgia felt throughout the offerings.

We suggest their Canta-Trio, a blend of tequila blanco, a citrus trio of grapefruit, lime and orange, agave and a spiced salt rim, The Balmy Cobbler with Pisco, pineapple, balsamic and berry shrub and lemon, and The Runway, a clarified milk punch with aged rum, banana, house-made grenadine, lemon, mixed berries, orange and a house spice mix.

If you're interested in hosting an event at Casa Sol, they offer a range of options from small gatherings to full buyouts. Their team can provide detailed information to tailor it to your needs.

ATHLEISURE LIST | DÖNER HAUS

April 12, 2023

On March 20th, Döner Haus opened and introduced the East Village to their German-style Kebasb. The Döner kebab is a popular meat dish that originated in Turkey. In Germany, the Döner - as it's simply called there - came to life when Turkish immigrants in the 50s came to Germany and brought their cuisine along. Missing many classic Turkish ingredients for the kebab, they started using German ingredients such as cabbage, or even sauerkraut and other pickled vegetables. They also started catering to the German preference of having “crispy” food and offered the Kebab in a pressed Turkish flatbread, as opposed to serving it with rice. It's more like a sandwich, with all ingredients placed into a "triangle pouch" flat-bread and flavored with garlic sauce.

Other differences include the meat in Turkish-style Döner kebabs is usually lamb or a mixture of lamb and beef, while in German-style Döner kebabs, it is usually chicken, turkey, or just beef.

Turkish-style Döner kebabs are typically served with rice and vegetables, or in a soft, thin bread called lavash, while German-style Döner kebabs are usually served in a pressed crispy flatbread called pide.

German-style Döner kebabs may have cabbage, sauerkraut or other pickled vegetables as well as commonly used onions, tomatoes, and salad in Turkey.

Turkish-style Döner kebabs are typically served with Mediterranean sauces such as tzatziki or tahini sauce, while German-style Döner kebabs generally come with a special dill based garlic sauce.

You can select from Chicken, Beef, and soon Vegan for your protein. Notably all the meat from Döner Haus are 100% halal and 100% free of any fillers, which is uncommon for gyro in NYC.

If you're counting carbs, you can order their Döner Box without fries and you'll be able to enjoy an almost zero-card meal. Keep in mind that tomatoes have carbs, but the menu is customizable so you can leave something out or get anything extra.

When ordering, there is the Döner Kebab Sandwich, which is the classic German Döner experience featuring sliced rotisserie meat in a bread-pocket with garlic sauce, as well as the Döner Box, which is shaved meat over fries and salad with plenty of garlic sauce. There is also the Haus Fries, French fries with a secret German seasoning.

All city workers get 25% off, there is 20% off for students and if you come in after midnight you will get 20% off.

WHY YOU SHOULD CHARTER A LUXURY BOAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN

April 24, 2019

The Mediterranean in southern Europe is a first class destination for those looking for a high end, diverse area of the world that will provide visitors with great experiences and wonderful times. The best way to see the Mediterranean is by chartering a luxury yacht or sailboat and visiting the many wonderful cities that the Mediterranean touches. Here are some great reasons for you to charter a luxury boat on the Mediterranean.

A Once in a Lifetime Experience

Sailing or yachting on the Mediterranean Sea is a unique and memorable experience that will leave you both relaxed, rested and recharged.  As you spend your days on the water, the calm and allure of it all will overwhelm you and remind you that there is a good life. There is a picture opportunity nearly every minute and you and your family, or friends who are sharing your adventure will all fall under the spell of the Mediterranean. Laying in the sun is one common activity when boating on the Mediterranean but you can also go fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving in some of the most beautiful and abundant waters in the world. This is definitely the perfect time to make some memories that will last a lifetime.

You Can Charter a Fully Crewed Boat

Whether you plan on chartering a sailboat or a yacht and if your goal is several days or a few months, Vyra.com can provide you with a fully crewed vessel for your entire time on the Mediterranean. They are also able to assist you with making sure you can come to port in any of your desired destinations. They will plan your entire itinerary with you and make sure that you do not run into any avoidable problems. And best yet, they can do this last minute and still get you to the places you want to go most.  If you want a chef on board or to have food constantly catered this can also be arranged. The same is true with a masseuse who you might want to meet you on certain days. Your boating trip can be as bare bones or all-inclusive as you prefer.

The Weather is Perfect

The weather in the areas of the Mediterranean is perfect for most of the year and cool during the coldest parts of the winter. This means that with only a sweater, you can enjoy the Mediterranean any time of the year and feel comfortable when you do. With access to so many lovely beaches and warm weather activities available knowing you can partake in them almost any time you go makes the Mediterranean a welcoming destination.

You Have Access to Amazing Places

The Mediterranean Sea is connected to more than 20 countries and territories and when you charter a boat on it, you can get to any of them easily. The Mediterranean is calm and easy to navigate making traveling to any of the places on its shores a breeze to get to. You can sail to some of the places people put down as their dream destinations. Whether it is the South of France, the warm coast of Italy or Spain, Sicily, Santorini, Malta, Bulgaria or Turkey, you can sail or yacht to any or all of them for a meal, a day or as long as you like.  Or you can simply hang out off the coast of any of these destinations and simply enjoy being near them.
