COLLABORATIONS | COACH & RODARTE

Who went online or visited a number of boutiques that dropped the COACH & RODARTE collection which is a limited edition capsule collection that includes a number of leather handbags, jackets, dresses and even yummie sweatshirts that are perfect for transitional weather when we're running to brunch or getting necessary errands out of the way. This artistic collection combines both of these iconic houses together as a means to put a twist on the classics and to see leather craftsmanship in a new way.

"Rodarte's conceptual approach to American style was the perfect lens to reimagine nostalgic Coach pieces," Stuart Vevers, Coach's Creative Director stated. "The mash-up of influences resulted in a romantic cool collection that feels right for both houses." Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte were able to design handbags which is not found in their line and was brought forward in this collaboration. 

The line includes rocker styles in black as well as neutrals from soft blends to creamy leathers. There's something for everyone to make it easily worn in whatever style you rock from day to day.

A CHIT CHAT WITH AIMEE KESTENBERG

The summer is a perfect time of year that allows every moment to be special simply due to the fact that the days are longer, the weather is warmer and any and every activity is possible. One of the most essential accessories that are carried (specifically during this time of year) is a handbag. Although we can debate on whether there are "IT" bags and how one is placed in the running - we all know that you want the perfect style that takes what you need and allows you to go about your day without having to change it within the same day.

We have a number of handbag brands that we're fans of and we took a moment to chat it up with Australian designer, Aimee Kestenberg who has a range of cute styles and fabrications within her line that includes handbags and shoes that are available in a number of specialty stores, department stores and QVC.

ATHLEISURE MAG: When did you realize that you wanted to create your handbag line and what was the initial process like?

AIMEE KESTENBERG: I was lucky enough to train with some of the best luxury accessory brands while studying at Parsons The New School for Design, which really gave me a foundation of knowledge and skill set in handbags and leather goods. Having had a background in Industrial Design and then Fashion Design, handbags and accessories seemed like the perfect fit for a fashion conscious engineering based mind like mine. 

I launched my namesake brand, Aimee Kestenberg after realizing that nothing existed in the world of handbags that was right for me, my sisters and friends both in casual contemporary styling, luxury leathers and affordable prices. 

Going out on my own was scary and a big risk financially, but was the most thrilling and rewarding experience of my life. 

AM: Tell us more about your fashion background.

AK: My father is an entrepreneur, my grandparents were all jewelers so it's safe to say creativity is in the family. I studied Industrial design prior to moving to New York upon acceptance to Parsons School of Design. I interned and trained over the years with companies including Alexander McQueen, Ralph Lauren and Sass & Bide to name a few, as well as becoming a two time winner of the Independent Handbag Designer Awards. I also apprenticed for 3 years at The House of Couture where I ghost designed for luxury labels and celebrities before going out on my own.  

AM: What inspired your Spring 16 collection and anything you can tell us about your upcoming Fall and Holiday collections?

AK: Spring 2016 was inspired by free spirited energy in a world of chaos. It focuses on bringing elements of peace and colors that evoke happiness and calmness in addition to unique hand crafted detailing to focus on the human element missing in fashion world today. 

The upcoming Fall and Holiday collection continues to bring a beautiful earth tone color palette combined with unique exotics and soft slouchy shapes and leathers. 

AM: What are your favorite styles in the collection?

AK: The belt bag and my Iconic Tamitha Backpack. Both are chic and made for girls on the go like me!

AM:  Who is the Aimee Kestenberg girl?

AK: She's fearless, family oriented a free spirit, works hard but knows how to have fun. She is a lover of all things fashion, but not a sucker for those top dollar prices. She appreciates unique design and high quality at an affordable price point.

AM: Do you see yourself adding to the collection beyond handbags luggage, small accessories etc?

AK: Definitely! We are growing daily and have also recently launched footwear! We fully intend to take the Aimee Kestenberg brand to be full lifestyle.

AM: How did you enjoy being on QVC and what did that mean for the expansion and awareness of your brand?

AK: I love being on QVC! There is no other platform in the world that puts me inside of people's homes to have the ability to speak to people one on one and explain my inspiration as well as show them what I love about each piece I create. Not to mention that there is no marketing in the world that so seamlessly allows people to get to know you!

AM: In terms of balance, how do you keep it all together with working with your stores availability in a number of countries and taking time for yourself/family?

AK: It's tough, but when you're on 24/7 like I am, you just make it work. Giving up is not an option in the mind of a true entrepreneur. I have learned different management tools along the way that have also helped me to juggle everything. You learn that time is the most precious thing you have and learn to manage it carefully.

AM: Do you plan on making Aimee Kestenberg stores?

AK: I would love to launch a flagship store, both in New York City and my hometown in Melbourne, Australia!

AM: Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?

AK: Live to the fullest and remember that the only person that controls what you can or cannot do is you! Pushing through the hardest times will make you stronger and dreams are real and do come true. :)

A MOMENT WITH MONICA BOTKIER

Botkier is the quintessential NYC handbag that girls in the know love to carry no matter where they live. It's all about handbags in an array of shapes that truly work with your lifestyle. We sat down with Monika Botkier to talk bags, the collaboration with model, Cocoa Rocha and more!

ATHLEISURE MAG: How does Botkier maintain its "cool girl" style as an effortlessly chic brand? 

MONICA BOTKIER: Thank you! That’s our mantra. Our girl is 'street smart chic.' She knows what she wants and has an edge to her style... always confident. We think about her in every aspect of the brand, from product design to social media. When I started the brand, I was a downtown girl living my dream in Soho NYC and that moment resonates with the modern woman no matter where she lives. 

AM: How much of a role does NYC play in the designs? 

MB: In 2013, after 10 years, we added New York to our brand name officially. There is a certain strength and attitude to the women  of NYC. We like to celebrate our city in this way, particularly in terms of style and functionality that informs our design process. New York is our muse!

AM: How much does your photographic background place into the design and/or the brand at large? 

MB: I was very focused on fashion photography as I transitioned to design, so style was a big part of that artistic expression for me. Through the years I shot some of the campaigns which was a function of being an entrepreneur and an independent brand. We were now of the first contemporary brands who would even create campaigns because that was so second nature for me. Now we have amazing teams that we collaborate with I can tell you it’s very satisfying to see the product go from sketch to sample to shoot.

AM: What are your 3 favorite bodies in the collection for Spring '16? 

MB: Our bags are names after NY neighborhoods or streets. My favorites for S16 are the Irving Hobo, Cobble Hill shoulder and the classic Soho Tote.

AM: Tell us about your collab with Coco Rocha? 

MB: I was a big fan of Coco, her astute sense of style and social media saavy. I believe collaborations are really important for brands to keep things fresh and fun. We reached out to her and she was excited. The connection was instant, I had met her before at events around the city. She is a wonderful, energetic, super smart talent and a new mom to boot. Coco is the ultimate modern woman, our ideal Botkier girl.

AM: How do you juggle your time between business and friends/family? 

MB: The million dollar question! Female power and promise are the touch points today for any industry. We see how we still have to fight for the respect we deserve as women in the working world. The truth is you’ll always have more on your plate when you have a family and a business. You can have it all but it isn’t some retouched version of what that looks and feels like. It’s hard work and the balance comes from within accepting that it will never be perfect. I try not to be too hard on yourself and be realistic. There are only so many hours in the day. It’s important to be present in the moment you’re in. Believe in yourself, your goals and keep pushing. Give and receive love starting with yourself.

AM: With the success of your brand how do you achieve balance and stay connected/present? 

MB: Life-Work-Balance is truly a buzz phrase today and I think that's great. This means at we are collectively thinking how to achieve a healthy and happy life that isn't only about work! It takes effort to eat right, meditate and breathe through challenges. For me being grateful helps me keep perspective. I try not to get overwhelmed by media, social, news or otherwise, but to remain aware. All I can say there is no perfect formula and it takes work to maintain through consciousness. I belong to a group of creative and successful women, many of them designers I admire so having a group to lean on is also a nice way to find that balance.

AM: How do you prepare for the Spring personally and as a brand?  

MB: I look forward and then make a list of goals. It’s a great time to refresh the vision board and make sure to recommit to New Year's resolutions like meditation, diet and exercise since summer is right around the corner! Same for the brand. We review, regroup and renew for the warm seasons to come. People feel inspired when the sun starts shining and the weather gets warmer, it’s a great time for new creative plans. 

AM: What does Balance Next mean to you? 

MB: The first thing I think of is the life/work/health/happiness/peace balance that should be a priority for everyone to feel grounded no matter what is happening at the moment. It’s the commitment to wellness which as I get older has started to become more of focus and brings me true joy.

AM: What are 3 musts for your personal time? 

MB: Sorry for the cliche but I love Soul Cycle, also Y7 yoga studio, Dr. Frank Lipman’s protein shakes for breakfast and Roman’s for a neighborhood food spot (Brooklyn Fort Greene). Music in as much of the day as possible, car, kitchen, office everywhere!

AM: Athleisure is about comfortable clothes that can transition from the gym, to brunch, meetings and a night out or jetsetting (think Bandier leggings paired with a cashmere tunic and ankle boots) - what are 3 favorite pieces that are great within your athleisure look? 

MB: Just what you mentioned above - my ideal atheleisure outfit to a T!
