Our ATHLEISURE LIST features premier fitness gyms and spas with you. We share the methods, offerings, amenities and more. On Oct 17th, we launched ATHLEISURE LIVE which features a fitness method of note that we host a session and select curated goodie bags for our fitness and fashion influencers and media. We kicked off our first one at IMAXShift and took a moment to find out more about this DUMBO gym.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What is IMAXShift and what is the meaning behind the name?

BRYAN MARCOVICI: IMAXShift is all about getting away from the repetitive and monotonous workout routine. The name is about getting people to ‘shift’ their expectations about what fitness can be and expect more from their ride. We want people to expect the magic of IMAX, to understand how being fully immersed in a visual experience can change the way they perform, the effort they give, and the enjoyment and results they get back.  It’s about transporting your mind while you transform your body.

BREE BRANKER: IMAXShift is indoor cycling powered by IMAX. We have the great fortune of IMAX branding, giving us their theatre geometry, sound technology, and that big famous screen. Our goal is to use the screen to enhance your workout, immersing you in inspiring footage to help you achieve next-level results.

JESSE ALEXANDER: IMAXShift is a visual, physical, emotional, visceral journey that takes you sprinting, jogging and climbing all over the world BEYOND it. Our name comes from the basis of "Shifting" your reality.  Prepare to lose yourself and gain everything.

AM: Who are the creators of IMAXShift and what are their backgrounds?

BM: Mark Weinberg (COO) and I (CEO) are seasoned managers who look for opportunities to disrupt existing businesses or industries that all seem to follow the same approach.  We partnered with two of the leading indoor cycling instructors in NYC, Jesse and Bree, to ensure that IMAXShift is a performance-driven workout that is as fun as it is effective.

AM: In addition to the current location, are their plans to open additional ones?

BM: The first IMAXShift location in DUMBO is a pilot designed to prove out an entirely new approach to fitness.  Early customer response has been extremely positive. If this concept proves successful, our goal would be to expand to several new locations along the east coast such as Boston or DC in the backend of 2017.

AM: What amenities are offered?

BM:  In staying true to the IMAX brand, we sought to make the entire experience in our studio a premium one.  We offer Redken products in the locker rooms as well as Detox Dry Shampoo.  More importantly, we’ve partnered with Glam&Go to open a salon within our space that offers express styling services to our riders.

AM: Do you sell apparel in your studio?

BM: We have a small, but growing, line of private label apparel designed to showcase our brand and give a shout-out to the amazing DUMBO community around us.

AM:  What types of workouts are offered?

BB: We have our signature ride, which is an eclectic blend of scenic footage, digital performance based worlds, and music videos; giving you a variety of high intensity bursts of energy balanced with internal and emotional moments. We have a music video ride which is a mix of fun and current music videos, inspiring more of a let go and have fun vibe in the studio, never leaving out our beloved intervals.

And lastly we have theme rides, some based in music such as a Beyonce ride, and some based in visuals such as the Around the World in 45 Minutes Ride. We have also done current event themes such as the Olympics Ride showcasing all of the summer events as well as a Suicide Squad ride, featuring footage from the movie and the soundtrack. Last but not least we have strength and recovery workshops in the lobby after certain classes in a series called FLOORPLAY, educating our riders on their bodies and ways they can use the studio space before and after class to enhance their performance and increase their social activity.

JA: At IMAXShift we offer our "signature ride" where you will hear all the beats from Hip hop, Pop, remixes, EDM and a throwback or 2 that will make you either shout, smile or flex (I like to flex!). You'll see visuals ranging from racing over the oceans in Hawaii, riding the beat through the Galaxy (note-avoid the asteroids!), or sprinting through our music reactive digital worlds.  Theme rides for the holidays include Disclosure V Diplo, East Coast v West Coast Hip hop (we will be TAKING YOU to those coasts), and of course Beyonce V Jay Z. Not like any theme ride you've taken before.  Come Ride Beyond.

BEAUTY ESSENTIALS WITH CELEBRITY MUA, RAE MORRIS

November 9, 2016

We took a moment with Celebrity Makeup Artist, Rae Morris who is renowned as one of the most influential Makeup Artists in the world. She is not only a number one best-selling author, but also a four times Australian Makeup Artist of the Year, the longest serving Makeup Director for L’Oreal Paris (2003-2013) and has been inducted into multiple Halls of Fame.

With the success of her new book, Makeup Masterclass, which took 2 years to shoot in Australia as well as NYC, we talked about her new release, her must have tools that she designed and what makeup is an essential that we should know about.

ATHLEISURE MAG: How did you know that you wanted to be a makeup artist and who were your inspirations?

RAE MORRIS: In the 80’s, I was a model for about 5 minutes, and that was a time when faces were transformed to look “unrecognizable.” That’s when my love for makeup began. I was also blessed to be around the birth of Culture Club, Marilyn, and Ziggy Stardust, where men wore as much sometimes more makeup than women!

AM: Makeup Masterclass is such a powerful and comprehensive book that showcases tools, maintaining skin, methods and the end result of creating a large number of looks that are popular whether they are rocked on the streets, or in a number of shows/movies that we watch.  How did you go about putting this project together?

RM: The experience from the previous five books really helped, but the aim was to create a book that not only combined but also eclipsed all my previous books into one big bible. Probably the hardest bit was putting into words some of the creative processes and techniques that I’ve developed and use everyday. Normally, I would just demonstrate them, but for the book I had to illustrate with words and diagrams. I’m really proud of how my “Eye Phi” turned out. The project itself ran over 2 years. We shot first in Sydney and then in New York. Then the real work started. In the end, it was almost over-engineered. It had the best paper, rose gold embossed hard cover, dust cover… Our lead designer even flew to the printer and slept there for five days to make sure they got the color grading right!

AM: It's been 7 years since you wrote your first book, what do you feel has changed in the industry since then?

RM: I can't even believe how much has changed in the industry in the last 7 years since Makeup Guide was released. If I could turn back the clock and be told in that seven year’s time, 13 year-olds will have their own “channel” in the form of youtube, etc and women who never even knew what a contour cream was, would not only know ten types, but they would also know the makeup artist’s secret of applying it. There is so much “free information” available.

AM:  You have your own line of tools, and in the book you go through the kinds of brushes. that one should have - what are 3 tools from your collection that you suggest that every makeup kit should have?

RM: No.3 Ultimate Cheekbone - I believe the most powerful anti-aging thing a woman can do is contour, but it can be confusing. This brush takes all the guesswork out of it for you. It carves the perfect cheekbone in less than 3 strokes.

Radiance Brush (26) - I honestly believe no foundation brush comes close to this one. It’s the softest (but still firm) and it works with all foundation types (from liquid to cream to powder) by applying foundation in seconds. It is a favorite of Kelly Roland, Paula Abdul, and Sarah Jessica Parker just ordered one. Also, the Radiance was seen all over the back stage atthe McQueen show in Paris.

No 7. Deluxe Point Shader - This brush will change the way you do your eye makeup. It’s super soft, perfect for creating the perfect socket, but just by adding pressure to the brush you can create the best Smokey eye in seconds.

NO.14 Perfect eyeliner - Eyeliner brushes are essential, you can use them for the obvious “Eyeliner” tasks or just to intensify your chosen eye shadow around the lash line. I have three sizes in my brush range, as one size does not fit all! You may want a precise fine line or a bold "Audrey Hepburn” line, so I recommend using the the right size brush to achieve the line size that you want.

AM: Even skin tone is something that is essential to any makeup look. You share a great tip on how to ensure that you are matching your skin correctly; can you share this with our readers?

RM: It’s a myth to match your foundation to your jawline; your neck is usually much paler than your face due to it being blocked from the sun. You always want your face and body to be the same color, so always match it on the décolletage area and if you fake tan you need to darken your base.

AM: What makeup/skincare brands do you personally advise that we should have?

RM: For makeup I love Nars, M.A.C. and I’m so in love with the I.T concealers and foundations, and Ellis Faas creamy eyes are my favorite. For skin care I love Ultra Cuticles MD, or anything that’s active, I love the little tingle I get when I use the vitamin “A’ and “C’s” and I love having omilux light and gentle peels, I would rather spend the money and go to a dermatologist or a cosmetic physician and see results, than spend so much money on hype.

AM: Of the looks that you create in Make-up Masterclass, which ones are your favorites and which ones do you personally wear yourself?

RM: I do love the cover of Shanina Shaik. I love the femininity and the prettiness of the makeup. For me, I don’t actually wear makeup (rarely) to work. I don’t want to show off to my clients what I’m capable of, but if I had to pick a look it would be the second look I did on Shanina. It’s all about the eyeliner, with everything else paired back.

AM: What is a day in the life for you as a Celebrity Makeup Artist?

RM: Four makeup bags, two assistants, and everyday is different. It’s a balancing act between the photographer, the client, and the model; what they want me to do and what I want to do. So it’s constant consulting and decision-making. It’s more stressful than you might think, especially with all the egos involved (including mine). The makeup is the easy bit.

AM: Are you able to tell us celebrity clients that you have worked with and/or those that you would like to work with?

RM:
Some I can tell. Others I keep quiet for confidentiality reasons, so I don’t get hammered with questions about them when the cameras are off. My “keeping them private policy” is why these clients keep booking me.

So here are a few of my faves: Pink, Jessica Biel, Ellie Goulding, Kelly Roland, Paula Abdul, Shanina Shaik, Miranda Kerr, Cyndi lauper, just to name a few…

AM:  Paula Abdul wrote the forward for your book and we know that you did her makeup on So You Think You Can Dance, Australian edition - how did you get her to be involved with your book?

RM:
Some celebrities you work with become close friends. I consider Paula a friend, rather then a client now.

Yes, it was on that show that we met and we just started a great friendship. She always had this way of complimenting me and my work. She would say the best quotes about me, to me, so she just was perfect for the job.

AM: How do you stay balanced with so many projects that you work on and what fitness methods do you do?

RM: I’m actually completely out of balance (balance has never been a word anyone has used to describe me) and I have never exercised. I'm always too exhaust-
ed. I was brought up in a gymnasium, my mother was an instructor so it traumatized me for life. It’s always all or nothing, so I’m either working on the most creatively challenging jobs with 5 assistants, or I’m sitting at home watching “Peppa Pig” and playing Play Dough with my two year-old. Or I’m sleeping, so I suppose that’s balance?...

AM SEP COVER MODEL-4.jpg

Our fall style shoot took place at Aalto57 located on the UES. We had to find out what sets these units a part from others.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What is the meaning behind Aalto57?

AALTO57: The boutique rental building’s name—Manhattan’s prestigious 57th Street—its elegant design. Inspired by Alvar Aalto’s iconic vase, the tower’s sculptural architecture reflects classic concepts of design both inside and out. The curved silhouette is made from Italian glass and gives the 65-story tower a sculptural silhouette from every vantage point, and of course its location

AM: Tell us about the model unit's interiors

A57: (The 2-bed, 2-bath C line model unit) The unit was decorated by Eduardo Rodriguez, the principal of DSGNR, LLC. A Venezuelan native, Eduardo is a former Fashion Designer turned Interior Designer who has designed for television shows and commercials. His modern design style is minimalist with clean lines, bringing in color through furniture, accessories, paint and fabrics to reflect the owner's lifestyle and individuality.

AM: Tell us about the open floor plans in your units?

A57: The 169 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom residences redefine luxury rentals with quality, condo-like finishes and high-end appliances. The spacious, open floorplans are complimented by 9-foot ceilings and curved-glass walls designed to flood the residences with natural sunlight. Residences on the ninth floor have private terraces, while a selection of additional units offer private balconies.

AM: Who are the creators/development team behind this property and when did it open?

A57: World Wide Group and Rose Associates are the renowned New York real estate developers behind the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill  (SOM)-designed glass tower which opened its doors in August 2016.

AM: What amenities are offered?

A57: Aalto57 sets itself apart from other rentals, and even many condos, due to the second-to-none elite services are offered at the building. It is one of the few rental buildings that will grant residents with exclusive access to the premier concierge and lifestyle management company Luxury Attaché. Residents will have their own onsite Attaché charged with providing them with customized and unprecedented experiences, such as move-in/out coordination, travel, event planning and gifting, and access to trusted child and pet care services. Additional building amenities include exclusive access to a landscaped terrace designed by Mathews Nielson Landscape Architects with a fire pit on the seventh floor, as well as a fitness center, resident’s lounge, business center and conference room, field house with a basketball court, kids playroom, Bosch washer dryers in every apartment, access to Spot 57 for pet care, bike room with a DIY tune-up station, onsite residential manager and a 24-hour doorman.

AM: What is behind the design of the lobby?

A57: An atmosphere of calm, comfort and style envelopes you from the moment you step into the SOM-designed lobby. One of the many stand-out elements in the lobby is a wall that is comprised of five glass panes with a banding of mirrors and frosted glass, which creates an abstract moment. The lobby also features a skylight that offers views straight up to the top of the building.

AM: What are elements of note in the neighborhood that residents will enjoy from a culinary as well as a fitness perspective?

A57: Aalto57 is located in Manhattan’s most elite Midtown neighborhood: Sutton Place. The area is a true dining mecca with opulent offerings such as Mr Chow, Betony and Le Cirque. The building is within walking distance to Central Park and the East River, popular fitness options such as Soul Cycle (located directly across the street) and Equinox, worldclass shopping destinations including Barneys New York and Bloomingdale's, and famous cultural institutions like MoMA and The Met. Residents can also enjoy the convenience of having a Whole Foods right next door!

Our shoot focused on our model on a lazy Saturday in her apartment from getting up, relaxing, and getting a work out in. Ava DoBro is located in Brooklyn's Navy Yard and has a few things that are worth noting.

AM: What is the concept behind the design of the building?

AD: The building is unique in that it offers two distinct AvalonBay products (AVA DoBro and Avalon Willoughby Square) with a series of shared amenity spaces throughout. Feeding off the energy of the neighborhood, AVA DoBro creates a slender, fully-glazed silhouette anchoring Downtown Brooklyn. Interior designer CetraRuddy brought this dual-branded concept to life by creating two separate communities, each with memorable spaces and experiences geared to a specific target market. Avalon caters to a classic and sophisticated design sensibility, while AVA reflects a more eclectic, neighborhood-inspired design.

AM: What are the amenities offered at AVA DoBro?

AD: AVA DoBro offers residents a Children’s Play Room, comfortable Chill Lounge, Fitness Center, Fitness Studio and 30th Floor Rooftop Terrace to lounge, entertain and grill. Pet-centric amenities include a dog-washing station and vast rooftop dog run. Additionally, the lobby offers immediate access to AVA Brew, an on-site specialty coffee shop. By the end of the year, residents will also have access to an exclusive 58th Floor Lounge with north- and south-facing terraces with stunning views of Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Statue of Liberty.

AM: Accessibility seems to be a major aspect to this rental property with the access to subways on the corner, coffee shop etc, what colleges and larger businesses are in the area that would be draws to potential residents?

AD: Residents are drawn to the easy access to Manhattan and the emerging commercial and retail district of Downtown Brooklyn. The nearby MetroTech Center and King County Supreme Court house thousands of jobs, while Brooklyn Law School, NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering, Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus and New York City College of Technology flood the neighborhood with students.

AM:  Who decorated the space featured within our photoshoot?

AD:
CetraRuddy is the interior designer for the project and Pushcart Coffee operates AVA Brew.

AM: What are other selling points in this building?

AD:
Beyond the AvalonBay brand recognition, residents are especially fond of AVA Brew, the full suite of building amenities, range of unique apartment layouts, the pet-centric amenities and the friendly building staff.

AM: For those that are residents, what are the neighborhood selling points?

AD:
Residents are attracted to the immediate access to Manhattan, rapidly-emerging neighborhood, active streetlife and unique services and amenities AVA DoBro offers.

AM: Is there anything that we should know about the Brooklyn Navy Yard area?

AD:
The Navy Yard is undergoing a radical transformation and is quickly becoming an integral piece of Brooklyn’s waterfront redevelopment. A magnet for pioneering, energetic and creative entrepreneurs, the Brooklyn Tech Triangle is fueling a renaissance to grow the innovation economy in Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

GET ON POINT

July 27, 2016

Athleisure Mag was excited to sit down with Craig Smith during his busy schedule. We created a fashion x dance photoshoot with celebrity personal trainer, Craig Smith. We talked with him about his passions; being Madonna's personal trainer; Creative Director, and Head Master Trainer for Hard Candy Fitness – her international gyms; who he is influenced by; and how he keeps everything balanced.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What goes into becoming a top choreographer?

CRAIG SMITH: Talent, creativity, artistry, vision, discipline, fortitude, and hard work.

AM: Do you have any fun stories to share from iconic music videos or tours you were part of through the years?

CS: When I danced for Rihanna on a short Japan spot date tour for Nike, the audience was silent every number of our performance until the very end of each song. It was funny to me at the time because I had never experienced that before.

AM: Tell us about Hard Candy Fitness.

CS: Hard Candy Fitness is an international luxury gym brand inspired by Madonna - the artist, athlete, and icon. Our signature and exclusive premiere programs are created and inspired by daily workouts I create and do with Madonna, her worldwide tours, music videos, music, and fitness philosophies. We’ve had great success with the brand since 2010 with club locations in amazing places like: Italy, Chile, Russia, Germany, Mexico, and more. I have the awesome roles of Creative Director, and head master trainer of the Hard Candy Fitness Sweat Crew (a team of professional dancers & fitness coaches).

AM: As Creative Director and a Master Trainer at HCF, give us the scoop on where things are headed.

CS: We are launching a variety of incredible new programs to add to our current premiere programming roster and are opening locations in more amazing regions around the globe!

AM: How did you come to work with Madonna and what's it like to train/work with her on tour and personally?

CS: Madonna extended a personal invitation for me to work with her personally 2 1⁄2 years ago after having already worked with Hard Candy Fitness as both a Master Trainer and consultant for 1 year prior. Working with Madonna both personally and on tour is demanding, fun, chill, educational, and more all at the same time.

AM: What's it like to balance being a multi-faceted creative and coaching others at the highest level?

CS: I've always been a person of variety and multi-faceted. To maintain balance, I do my best not to overwhelm myself by taking on too much of a workload nowadays. I’m not afraid to say ‘no’ to things, or say ‘yes’ to things that inspire me.

AM: You have a wicked sense of style, first off what makes a good cap?

CS: Style, fit, versatility, comfort, construction, and functionality are things that make an excellent hat to me.

AM: How would you define your style?

CS: Urban, high fashion, classic, modern, edgy, conservative, funky, and everything else in-between.

AM: We know you love kicks too, what details do you like on them?

CS: Color, high top, edgy, and fashionable are all details that describe most of the kicks I own.

AM: You have a pretty busy schedule, what are your top 3 places to eat in NY and some of your favorite international destinations that we should add to our list?

CS: My top 3 places to eat in NYC: Peacefood Café, Candle 79 and/or Café, & Hangawi Restaurant. One of my favorite international spots I love is Mae’s Deli in London.

AM: How has vegan life helped shaped you?

CS: Vegan life has literally helped save and change my entire life for the better.

AM: We know you’re super reflective, how often do you jot thoughts and ideas down? What's being in the zone for you?

CS: I jot down thoughts and ideas every single day. Being in the zone is usually when I’m listening to instrumental jazz music; which helps me maintain incredible focus and concentration while I download all concepts/ideas.

AM: How big is organization in your day? Walk us through some typical routines.

CS: I’m a Capricorn; which means organization is everything! Typical daily routines range from prayer/meditation, emails, conference calls, reading, quality time with family & friends, personal workouts, planning workouts for clients, creating some form of art, and more.

AM: What’s next for Craig Smith after moving forward with HCF?

CS: Jumping back into music, dance, fitness, and some new & exciting entrepreneurial endeavors!

AM: What kinds of things do you like to do to have fun?

CS: I love watching documentaries, supporting live creative arts performances & shows, dining out, traveling, reading, writing, museums, sports, and much more.

AM: What are your must-haves for a dance, workout and chill playlist?

CS: My must-haves: comfortable stylish gear & footwear, awesome workout spaces, and my personal music playlists I create for my workouts and/or classes.

GREECE INSPO X MIAMI SWIM WEEK WITH TORI PRAVER

July 26, 2016

All eyes were on Miami as another successful season of Swim Week SS/17 hit South Beach. We caught up with former Sports Illustrated model, Tori Praver, who closed the season with her namesake line. This season she showed her 2017 Resort Collection entitled "Royal Castaway" which takes inspiration from Greek architecture, tiles, and white ocean rocks. Filled with earth tones balanced against black and white as well as limoncello and chili pepper hues. Tori Praver is available at Barneys New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Anthropologie.

We took a moment to chat with Tori about how she keeps Swim Week Stress away, stays healthy, continues to be fit on the road, and spending time with her family during one of her biggest weeks of the year.

ATHLEISURE MAG:  What is the inspiration behind this year's collection?

TORI PRAVER: I was inspired by travels through Greece and European cliffside beaches. We've also introduced a new range of coverage for bottoms this season that speaks to our youthful and mature customers. I'm also thrilled to offer some new styles for our separates - fit and form and very important to me, and are the cornerstone for everything I create.

AM: What does it mean to show at Swim Week?

TP: As far as being a swimwear designer goes it’s what you wait for all year – it’s a very special place to be able to showcase your collections and it’s also a lot of fun at the same time. I get to reconnect with my fellow designers and see everyone again from years past.

AM: How do you stay fit on the go?

TP: I try to eat clean whenever possible and keep up my workout regimen while on the  road. Luckily my family and I had the privilege of living at the Penthouse Residences for the week at 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach. The property really promotes a healthy lifestyle and offers a wide variety of healthy dining options by Chef Tom Colicchio, as well wellness and fitness classes throughout the day from SoulCycle to Spartan training, rooftop Yoga and more.

AM: Why is eating organic important to you?

TP: I’ve always been cautious about what I eat but now that I have two children, it has made me that much more aware of what we put in our bodies. There are so many hidden ingredients / chemicals in the food people eat every day without even knowing. Eating organic makes you feel healthier and better overall, and it’s important to me for my kids to also be aware of these things.

AM: How did you combat Swim Week Stress?

TP: Living in the Penthouse Residences at 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach was a stress relief in itself. My daughter Ryan was always entertained around the property between the four ocean front swimming pools, children’s activities and more. I was able to escape in the mornings as well to the SoulCycle studio on property and spun out my stress. It was really fantastic having everything I love in one place and made my life during Swim Week much easier.

AM: Now that you completed your show, what are you up to for the rest of the summer?

TP: I’m going to relax, spend time with my kids and not be stressed! I’m looking forward to staying in one place for a while.

AM: What lessons did you learn as a Sports Illustrated Model that have assisted you in balancing your time, being successful as a designer, etc?

TP: It wasn’t necessarily what I learned as a model, but the individuals that I’ve met along the way and the connections that I made were a huge advantage when I decided to start my own swimwear line. Every person you meet comes with their own life experiences and I’ve enjoyed getting to know and learn from so many different people throughout my career with all different backgrounds.

ORANGE BLOSSOM

June 17, 2016

Our June cover girl is a part of one of our favorite Netflix shows Orange is the New Black. Vicky Jeudy plays Janae Watson and is back for season 4 with a number of shennanigans with our favorite girls in Litchfield.

We took a moment to sit down to find out more about Vicky, what's she's working on and what we can expect from the new season which is available on June 17th!

ATHLEISURE MAG:  When did you realize that you wanted to be an actress?

VICKY JEUDY: I realized I wanted to be an actress when I was in college. It was a profession that I always found intriguing and wanted to pursue. It's storytelling of humanity.

AM: We love getting to know more about your character each season and hope to find out more about Janae Watson - what was the audition process like?

VJ: The audition process was great. My representatives sent me the audition material and I prepared for it. I went in and gave it my best.

AM: After being with you on set for our cover, we know you have an infectious smile and bubbly personality, how are you able to get into the character of Janae and what is the process like?

VJ: Aw! Thank you for that compliment. When I get into character I'm thinking of Janae's thoughts, how she is feeling in a particular situation and what is she trying to accomplish? I believe all of the characters are relatable and the audience can connect with feelings of loss, despair, happiness, etc.

AM: How long do you guys film for each season and what's an average day like?

VJ: Usually it takes 5-6 months for filming. An average day consist of reporting to work,  greeting everybody, I'll grab breakfast and head straight into hair and makeup. From there my cast mates and I will gather together for rehearsal with the director and then we are ready to shoot. It's a huge blessing  to work with an entire team of people that are professional and friendly. Working on the set of OITNB feels like I'm surrounded with love.

AM: What are you excited about for this season of OITNB?

VJ: I'm thrilled for season 4 and I can't wait for the public to see it. It deals with heavy headline news. I hope it brings insight to the audience and soften their heart about particular matters.

AM: Outside of OITNB, are there other shows, movies etc. that we will see you in?

VJ: Yes! I did an amazing independent film called Armstrong and I can't wait for everyone to see it once it's completed.

AM: When you're not going to castings, table reads etc. - how do you find balance and giving yourself the personal time that you need?

VJ: My personal time is extremely important to me. It's where I refresh myself. I believe in hanging out with my closest family and friends that I adore,  praying and having fun. I love bike riding, traveling, and exploring my city. It's so important to have a great time when going through this journey of life.

AM: How do you stay in shape?

VJ: I stay in shape by keeping active and eating healthy.  When the weather is nice, I have a weakness for outdoor activities such as biking, walking, running, whatever it is I'm doing it. I also go to the gym, but I'd rather be outside.

AM: What is your personal style when you're out and about in terms of favorite things to wear?

VJ: I love to look naturally pretty, simple and classy at the same time. I adore hats, a sophisticated bag and amazing pumps. Those are my daily fashion go to.

AM:  Do you have any charities or groups that you work with?

VJ: As of recently yes. I had the opportunity to observe the amazing work J/P HRO (Jenkins/Penn Haitian Relief Organization founded by philanthropist Sanela Diana Jenkins and actor Sean Penn) is doing in Port Au Prince, Haiti. Haiti is important to me because both my parents are Haitian. The organization has established schools, medical centers, community centers, housing and so much more. I'm excited to work along them.

AM: How are you spending your summer?

VJ: My summer will be spent on working, reading, traveling, and whatever I feel like getting into. It's never too late to discover more passions.

We shot our June cover at a stunning penthouse at 75 Wall St. With a great location and stunning views, we wanted to know more about this luxury property.

AM: The Hakimian Organization has developed a number of properties in the city, what sets 75 Wall apart from the rest that you own?

THE HAKIMIAN ORGANIZATION: 75 Wall Residences Atop Andaz is the most diverse and dynamic development in The Hakimian Organization’s portfolio to date. Since the condominium, which consists of 346 units, lies above 253 hotel rooms, retail space, and an onsite garage parking, residents share the benefit of having their own private space, alongside the privileges of staying in a hotel. The notable property, designed by the award-winning Rockwell Group, was named a Best Mixed-Use Development in the prestigious Americas’ Property Awards.

AM: 75 Wall is currently in the midst of a renovation, when will it be completed and can people purchase units now?

THO: The condominiums at 75 Wall are available for purchase now, with immediate occupancy. However, for the common spaces, 75 Wall has partnered with contemporary high-end furniture company, Ligne Roset, to make upgrades to the building’s lobby, 18th floor lounge and spacious rooftop, which offers sweeping views of lower Manhattan. 75 Wall is also adding a children’s playroom! This is all being done with no special assessment or increase in common charges, and will be completed this summer.

AM:  With the Andaz Wall Street hotel as a neighbor, what are residents able to enjoy as part of their amenities?

THO: With the Andaz Wall Street as a neighbor, residents are able to enjoy the benefits of a hotel, right in their very own home! This includes hotel services such as room service, catering and the finest treatments from The SPA at Andaz Wall Street hotel.

AM: We shot our cover star, Vicky Judy of Orange is the New Black in one of your penthouse lofts. Tell us who was the interior designer and the thought process behind the decoration. Also, share with us some of the details of the loft in terms of the materials used.

THO: 75 Wall has just released its most luxury penthouses and condominiums onto the market, which includes the space Vicky Judy was shot in, PHL2. In addition to releasing this exclusive collection onto the market, 75 Wall also partnered with Ligne Roset to update the amenity spaces, as well as design the model unit that was used for the shoot. PHL2 has three bedrooms, and a space in the front that could be used for an office, or, as we designed it, for a children’s play space.

AM: The roof deck is stunning with amazing views, your condos are in a historic part of town and there are great amenities available to residents - what are your key selling points of this space?

THO: 75 Wall’s location is definitely a huge selling point. The building is within walking distance to South Street Seaport, the Fulton Street Transit Center, and latest shopping mecca Brookfield Place, in addition to staples like Dean and Deluca, making it a prime choice for those looking to immerse themselves in all that lower Manhattan has to offer. Additionally, residents are able to enjoy the benefits offered by the building's latest onsite services and entertainment provider, Luxury Attaché, a premier concierge management company that is introducing music and art classes, children’s exercise programs and story time events into the space. Other programs include spa and salon services, event planning assistance, dry cleaning pick-up and delivery, refrigerator and pantry stocking, technology installation, and personalized entertainment and nightlife recommendations. The rooftop lounge and terrace is set to go under renovation as well, and will soon include outdoor and indoor entertainment spaces with fireplace, bar and kitchen.

AM: What elements are core Hakimian details that you tend to include within your buildings for those that seek out your developments?

THO: With our properties, we put an emphasis on lifestyle, outfitting each building with everyday luxuries that make them stand out. Whether it’s a partnership with a service that offers exclusive entertainment options, premier in-house workout classes, or furnishings from an award-winning design company, The Hakimian Organization strives to deliver unique indulgences to every property we have.

AM: What is next for The Hakimian Organization in terms of residential properties that we should include on our list for those on the market?

THO: Next up, The Hakimian Organization is looking to build a few properties on the emerging Long Island City. This includes 41-31 27th Street, a 15-story, 45-unit rental building with interiors by David Howell Design; and 33-01 38th Avenue, a six-story, 94-unit rental designed by Greenberg Farrow. The Hakimian Organization is also developing Long Island City’s 44-16 23rd Street into a new retail space, slated to open in 2017.

Our May cover is graced by Layla Luciano, a celebrity fitness trainer based here in NYC who has not only been noted as one of the city's hottest trainers, and also was one of the stars of Bravo's Workout New York and is the Co-Founder of PACT PARK! We sat down with Layla to find out more about her, the show and what she is working on!

ATHLEISURE MAG: When did you realize that you wanted to work in the fitness industry?

LAYLA LUCIANO: I have always been extremely active and full of energy ever since I was a kid. I played basketball, baseball, did track and field, gymnastics and martial arts. I started martial arts when I was 5, and because I was so dedicated, I earned my first degree black belt when I was only 11. When I received my black belt, I started assisting teaching classes for the children's program and I loved it! In high school, I volunteered to teach for my karate dojo to blind and visually impaired students. These experiences truly made me fall in love with teaching, and so when I went to college, I majored in elementary education. When I started student teaching in NYC public schools in Harlem, I thought I would automatically fall in love it. I fell in love with the kids, but not the curriculum system. I also saw all of the kids’ unhealthy eating habits, their school lunches and the fact that they only get half an hour of recess. Kids naturally have so much energy and need to burn some of that off throughout the day in order to really concentrate on school work! Instead of continuing on to teach the K-6 curriculum for NYC public schools, I started my own after school programs and summer camps for kids fitness. I taught a Latin dance program and a karate program, but the underlying idea for both of these programs was teaching my students the importance of building healthy bodies and lifestyles! I always knew I loved helping people better themselves, so two years later I continued to share my passion for fitness by developing and creating my own classes at various NYC fitness studios, including bootcamp, pilates and kickboxing.

AM: What areas do you feel are your expertise within fitness?

LL: In terms of training techniques and working with clients, because I'm fluent in a variety of workout styles, I feel like I'm very good at creating programs for clients so that they see the changes they want to see and they never get bored! I'm also very good at teaching two groups at once, like I did at Barry's Bootcamp for over 4 years.

AM: What's your style when training clients and where have you been an instructor in NYC?

LL: My style is tough love, but fun. I will make you work hard and push you to do so!  I've been an instructor at NDG Fitness, SLT and Barry's Bootcamp.

AM: We are fans of Bravo's Work Out New York, what was it like to be in the cast?

LL: Filming Work Out New York was definitely a rollercoaster ride. Some days I loved being in front of the camera, and some days I would be so tired from teaching, training clients, training myself and filming all day that I was cranky and over it! I was excited to share about my life as a fitness professional in NYC with a very different upbringing than most. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of how much editing could be done to manipulate any situation. As a fitness professional who wants to motivate and inspire, I feel like there were some aspects of my life that were highly dramatized that even made me a little uncomfortable watching, since it wasn't truly me (more like Layla multiplied by 1000).

AM: Is there another season for you/the cast and who from the show do you hangout with?

LL: We are still waiting to find out! I still hang out with Courtney, because we are from the same crazy person planet so we understand each other :P

AM: We know that you and Jay have your own studio fitness, tell us more about PACT PARK!

LL: PACT PARK is a high intensity, but low impact group fitness experience. The unique workout combines boxing and MMA strike training on a Nexersys machine that calculates strikes, accuracy, power AND friction training on a Lynx board, which concentrates on mobility, balance, control and coordination, using body weight training to maximize form, speed and power. PACT means Proprioceptive Aerobic Cross Training. Proprioceptive is about body awareness, knowing exactly what you're doing not by seeing, but just doing. The aerobic cross-training is by going back and forth between the Nexersys machine and the Lynx board. And a Park is just a fun place!

At PACT PARK, we give you metrics and data from the Nexersys machine to help you progress and give you results to improve your body & mind! You get a great release being able to hit the machine. We are also focused on training your body safely on the Lynx board because you're not jumping, you're sliding, which helps strengthen your joints and ligaments in a low impact manner. And on the machine, the pads give a little resistance when you punch them and are safer than hitting a punching bag.

In March, we started doing 30 minute pop up classes at Hub Seventeen in Lululemon Flatiron on 17th St. and 5th Ave before the studio itself opens to create some buzz and have people try out the new workout! We will continue these pop up classes throughout the summer until we open our first permanent location in NYC by Fall 2016 as that's the priority right now!

AM: For those who want an amazing booty this summer, what 3 workouts can we do?

LL: Understanding the three main parts of your booty will help you understand the movements you need to make in order to work it in every possible way for the perfect shape all around! Hip thrusters for optimal hip extension for the gluetus maximus. For gluteus medius and minimus fire hydrants with ankle weights and lateral band walks (with the band around the ankle).

AM: What's your personal style when you're at the gym and then going out?

LL: My gym style is the same as when I'm teaching a class or training a client because I usually go from one to the other. I love my sports bras to be a bright pop of color with sexy straps (like the Lululemon Free to Be Wild bra). I love tight tank tops that are either cropped or go just past the belly button (I usually end up cutting all of my tank tops to that length if they are too long). I love playing with different bottoms especially since I'm an ambassador for Carbon38. I get to try out all different designs and styles! When I'm going out I love to really play dress up since I live in workout clothes all day! My going out style is very sexy, but trendy.

AM: How did you get into aerial? how did you get into it?

LL: When I was about two years into my fitness career teaching bootcamps, lifting weights and doing boxing and muy thai, I felt like I was missing something. I've always loved competing in kata at my martial arts tournaments. Kata is a detailed choreographed of movements and strikes with a goal to internalize the movements and techniques so they can be executed and adapted under different circumstances without thought or hesitation. Competing in kata in tournaments was almost like a performance since you are judged on technique, style, balance, timing, and verisimilitude! I love being a strong, badass but I was missing the combination of that with style, grace and performance. That is how I discovered aerial three years ago!

AM: From the show, we can see that you have a great sense of self, are comfortable in your own skin and are able to speak your truth without reservation. How did you get that sensibility?

LL: I was born and raised in NYC (that alone will make you tough) with a strong, loving mom who truly taught me to love myself and that is how I was raised it wasn't until I start- ed modeling towards the end of high school and into college that I become very self concious. At that time my particular look was "too exotic" and I had "curves" (which is an
outrageous statement because when I look back at pictures of myself from then, I was so
skinny...I just had a little wider hip!)  As tough as you are, comments like that over and over again start to get to you. When I started com paring myself to other models, that's when I realized this world wasn't healthy for me and I found myself again through where I started, fitness! Everyone wants to look good but make sure you are also doing it for your health and for the good feelings you get when you make yourself better and stronger!

In Step, Layla Luciano fashion editorial was shot at The Colorado (201 E 86th St) and Pure Barre (1325 Lexington Ave) on the UES in NYC.

135 W 52ND

Our NAILED IT Fashion Editorial was a collaboration between deborah lippmann's new summer polishes, Mochidoki Japanese ice cream and the residences at 135 W 52nd St. We spoke with the team to find out why this building is one to keep an eye out for with its renovation slated for completion at the end of June.

ATHLEISUERE MAG: What are the amenities offered at 135 West 52nd Street?

135 W 52: One of the building’s most striking amenities is the 75-foot lap pool clad in custom mosaic tile and men's and women's changing rooms. The full 7th floor features 12,000 square feet of amenities including an expansive wrap South facing terrace. There are two gyms—a cardiovascular room and a weight room with a yoga studio, men's and women's sauna and steam rooms, whimsical children's playroom, social room, lounge with marble fireplace and lush seating, media screening room, caterer’s kitchen and dining area that can be reserved for private parties, and a golf simulator room. The 47th floor rooftop boasts 2,200 square feet of common outdoor space with kitchen facing North (Central Park), West and East.

AM: What is the concept behind the design of the building?

135W52: The architecture is by Cetra Ruddy. Their vision was to create a building that is streamlined and sophisticated with beautifully-crafted details in the interior. The developer wanted to incorporate art into the building, which was commissioned French artist Thierry Dreyfus, who works exclusively with light to create a subtle light aesthetic that runs up and down the length of the building and gently pulsates to emulate the energy of New York. 135 West 52nd Street sits on 6 1/2 Avenue where there is a galleria or passage that runs from West 52 to West 53. Our passage will have a 20-foot waterfall and a light sculpture by Thierry Dreyfus.

AM: Who designed the space that was included within our photoshoot?

135W52: Cetra Ruddy designed the building’s interiors. The kitchen is custom-designed exclusively for the building by Italian company Dada, which is a division of Molteni.

AM: We loved the windows that are floor to ceiling as it creates great natural light, what are other selling points in this building?

135W52: The building features many selling points. The curtain wall (the floor-to-ceiling windows) is certainly one stunning aspect of the building because it lets in a lot of natural light, and many of the corner apartments boast multiple exposures. Additionally, 135 West 52nd Street has a very elevated level of design as well as construction. There are numerous elements within each apartment that are custom designed exclusively for the building. The amenities are also a large selling point, which includes a 75-foot lap pool as well as all the other amenities. Another draw is that the building is in a very convenient location with great accessibility to public transportation. The Midtown area has become a desirable area to live, and 135 West 52nd Street’s preeminent design coupled with the large square footage and favorable price, makes it a highly sought-after residential building in the area.

AM: For those who are residents, what are the neighborhood selling points?

135W52: Neighborhood selling points: five blocks from Central Park; great accessibility to public transportation; centrally located to the Upper East Side, Upper West Side and Downtown; within close proximity to the Time Warner Center; located around the corner from MoMA and an array of art galleries, cultural institutions and wonderful restaurants. There are also a lot of neighborhood conveniences which are right out the door.

AM: Tell us more about the pool that seems like you stepped into a spa.

135W52: The pool is really a highlight and impressive feature of the bldg. It’s a 75-foot lap pool clad in chrome mosaic tile with a backlit feature wall and integrated seating.
