10 QUESTIONS ABOUT COSMETIC SURGERY YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW- ANSWERED BY A BOARD- CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON

January 24, 2020

We sat down with Dr. Manish Shah to find out common questions that we have been asked about cosmetic surgery. From all of the different questions that have been sent to us, we have 10 answers that can come in handy for you or someone that is asking you for your knowledge.

ATHLEISURE MAG: How long do breast implants last until they have to be removed and done again?
DR. MANISH SHAH: Although the implants themselves last forever, their structural integrity does not. Over time, the average wear and tear could cause a rupture or leak. In general, saline or silicone implants should be replaced or removed every 10 to 15 years if you notice any changes. A rupture in a saline implant tends to be more noticeable, as the deflation is visible. While that may sound scary, it’s actually quite harmless, as the saline is just absorbed by the body. However, it is not as easy to notice if a silicone implant has ruptured. For this reason, most doctors will recommend an MRI every 2 years for their patients with silicone implants to check for leaks. Implants may need to be removed or replaced for other reasons too, but in general, should last from 10 to 25 years.

AM: If I have fat removed through liposuction, will it reappear elsewhere?
DR. MS:
Technically, yes, it is possible for the fat to return, but only if you let it come back. If the patient maintains their weight, the fat will not return or appear somewhere else on your body. A little bit of weight gain is fine, such as 5 to 10 pounds, as long as patients stay close to their “post-lipo weight”. Because fat cells accumulate in an evenly distributed manner, weight gain tends to be more noticeable in areas that are untreated than treated. So, even patients who gained a considerable amount of weight post-lipo look better than they did if they had not undergone surgery.

AM: After repeated Botox injections, will facial muscles ever lose the ability to frown?
DR. MS:
Even though one of the side effects of Botox is difficulty smiling or frowning, the effects of Botox wear off in 3 to 4 months. Repeated use of Botox causes the muscles treated to atrophy and thin out. When they "wake" back up they tend to be weaker and less likely to make wrinkle. This is why many consider Botox a great anti-aging treatment. Botox can be administered in a way in which it does not freeze the muscle completely. This is something you would discuss with your injector.

Discuss with the injector what your goals are. Some people such as actors need to be able to express themselves. In this case, Botox can be administered so as not to freeze the muscle completely. Others want certain muscles not to move at all. An experienced injector has the knowledge to make adjustments. We also have the ability to combine Botox with other treatments to assist your goals.

AM: I thought silicone breast implants can rupture, so why are they still used?
DR. MS:
Both saline and silicone implants can leak. But, it is much harder to tell when a silicone implant has ruptured over a saline implant. Someone with silicone implants may go months or even years without noticing. This is due to the very thick and viscous silicone filling, moving only at very slow rates. It will generally stay within the capsule of breast tissue surrounding your implant, which makes for a simple replacement. Additionally, silicone is the gold standard against which other implantable materials get compared. It is a safe material when used in the human body.

AM: Will liposuction eliminate cellulite?
DR. MS:
Although patients used to think liposuction could eliminate cellulite, today doctors are not recommending it for that use. In some cases, liposuction can actually make the cellulite worse by creating more dimples in the skin. While it is true that excess fat can make cellulite worse, it’s not the real cause. Liposuction on the thighs and butt only marginally improve the appearance of cellulite. On the contrary, thin skin in these areas can exacerbate the problem, especially in older women where the skin tends to be less elastic.

Doctors have found that ultrasound and laser-assisted liposuction can effectively reduce cellulite because it tightens the skin as it removes fat. But again, these alone will not rid you of cellulite.

AM: Will I have to wear my hair over my ears to cover face-lift scars?
DR. MS:
On average, face-lift scars around the ears take about six months to fade and become almost invisible. You probably are going to want to wear your hair down for the first month for recovery purposes. It’s best to choose a hairstyle within this time that will not apply added pressure to the area of incision while still helping to cover up the scar at the same time. Ask your doctor how soon it is safe for you to wear makeup over the scar as a cover up option until they fully fade.

AM: Can my breast implants pop?
DR. MS:
Unfortunately, yes breast implants can “pop”, but it is rare and easily treatable. Both saline and silicone implants have an outer shell that can potentially develop a tear, called a rupture. The rupture could be caused by a variety of things such as normal aging of the implant, trauma caused by a car accident, a needle insertion during a biopsy, or other factors. If you experience any changes in breast shape and size, and increased pain, firmness, and swelling over a period of weeks, these may be signs that your implant has ruptured. Most corrective surgeries include removing both implants and replacing them in the same surgery. Your surgeon might also recommend that you switch to a different type of implant. In any case, discuss with your doctor in detail the best option to avoid risk of rupture in the future.

AM: What happens if I’m not happy with my surgical results?
DR. MS:
The first step is to be patient. Some patients look good in as fast as three weeks, others three months, and, for some, the full results aren’t apparent until six months after surgery. You should wait for all the post-surgical swelling and bruising to go away completely before fretting over the end result.

With that being said, speak up if you are feeling anxious. At your follow-up appointment, it is perfectly fine to voice to your surgeon that you are feeling disappointed. A good doctor will address your concerns, walk you through the recovery process, and if necessary, talk about the next steps.

AM: How soon after my lipo can I have sex?
DR. MS:
After having a procedure like liposuction or a tummy tuck, you will definitely feel some moderate soreness and swelling. It’s normal. When it comes to resuming sexual activity, your personal level of comfort plays a large factor as there is no specific body structure you can damage after liposuction. This means your soreness or the healing process of your incisions may be the only thing stopping you from being intimate. As soon as you feel both physically and emotionally ready, you are safe to resume having sex. For most patients, it takes about a week.  But if we removed excess fat on large areas of your thighs, belly, and/or buttocks, you might have to wait a week to ten days. Before then, your body will be tender and that could make the experience painful.

AM: What is the youngest age you would consider performing a facelift?

DR. MS: When evaluating a patient for facelift surgery, age is only a relative consideration. I've performed facelifts on patients under 40 years of age who lost a lot of weight causing their face to deflate and sag. That being said, most facelift or neck lift procedures are performed on patients between 45-70 years old. If the volume loss can be managed by treatments other than facelift surgery, patients will opt for them. However, once those minimally invasive or noninvasive treatments no longer cut it, a patient can choose to have a facelift. For some patients that may be in their early 40's.

AM: Is there a trendy cosmetic procedure that you feel is a waste of money and time?

DR. MS: The procedure that I find a waste of time and money is Kybella. It is so expensive for patients and has significant social downtime. I can get better results, more quickly with neck liposuction. Also, I am still waiting to see if patients can get decent results with Sculptra injections for buttocks augmentation. For doctors that can't perform surgical procedures, or for patients who want to avoid surgery, these may be their only choices.

THREE SECRETS OF YOUNGER LOOKING MEN

December 14, 2019

Why do some men the same age appear so different? Some guys seem to have all the luck when it comes to aging well, while others can appear old before their time. However, it’s not all down to luck or good genes, and there are steps that any man can take to turn back the hands of time.

If you’re approaching a crossroads in life, perhaps after a divorce or when facing a career change, it makes sense to think about your appearance as your shop window. If you want a potential employer or partner to invest in you, then it’s time to ensure that you’re looking attractive, groomed and worth a second glance. Here are some ways that you can invest in appearing or coming across as a younger version of yourself.

Posture

The way a man stands says a lot about his self-confidence, energy levels and youthfulness. Standing tall is important at any age, but poor posture can add an entire decade onto a man in his 50’s and beyond. Talk to your doctor about posture, as this can also affect your spine in later life. You may need specialist help to realign your back, or it might just be a case of remembering to stand and sit with a straighter back until it becomes a habit. This is one completely free way to improve how you come across in person, and it might even prevent future medical problems.

Your skin

The skin on your face has been exposed to sun, wind and pollution for your entire life. While women tend to protect their skin from their 20’s with a barrier of moisturiser and even sunscreen, men tend not to bother until it’s almost too late. If you’ve neglected your skin, it’s possible to literally peel away the years with a chemical peel, which will remove things like surface sun damage, old acne scars and even fine wrinkles. The depth of peel is up to you, with the more intense peels requiring several weeks of downtime while your old skin comes away and your fresher, newer face is revealed underneath. If that’s too extreme, milder peels can retexture and refine your skin over the course of several months.

Sort your hair out

If you’ve had the same hairstyle for over 10 years, it might be time for a restyle. Hair loss is a major age giveaway, and even very elderly men look more youthful and sprightly with hair than without it.

Could you change your hairstyle? How about using a subtle dye, or a thickening product to bulk it up? Perhaps you’d like to consider a hair transplant as an investment in your future.

AM MAY THE CONDITION OF CONDITIONING-1.jpg

THE CONDITION OF CONDITIONING

May 29, 2018

Conditioners can impact how our hair holds a style as well as its overall health and appearance. With so many feeling confused by the options of this product, do you leave it in or rinse it out, and which kinds are best to use? We connected again with Maya Smith to answer these questions. She is an International Master of Natural Curls and founder of The Doux®, a haircare line created specifically for naturally curly hair which includes The Fresh Rinse® conditioner.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What are the benefits of a conditioner?

MAYA SMITH: Conditioners help protect the hair from dryness and breakage by coating the hair shaft to help it retain moisture and softness. People tend to use it mainly for the added benefit of detangling hair however, it’s important to choose a conditioner that won’t weigh your hair down.

AM: What are the benefits of a rinse?

MS: A rinse, unlike a conditioner, does not coat the cuticle of the hair. A rinse has a much thinner consistency and is in actuality a detangler.

AM: Do I use a leave-in conditioner or a conditioning rinse?

MS: You can use both if your hair is dry, course, or color treated, however, fine hair or hair that tends to be porous should stick to conditioner only.

AM: Should everyone with curly or kinky hair use a conditioner?

MS: Yes. Conditioners help maintain the hair’s elasticity, or its ability to stretch and expand without breaking, which is essential for curly hair.

AM: Do I use a leave-in conditioner or a conditioning rinse?

MS: You can use both if your hair is dry, course, or color treated, however, fine hair or hair that tends to be porous should stick to conditioner only.

AM: How long do I leave in a conditioning rinse?

MS: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Every formula is different, so you want to be sure to use the product as directed to avoid under or over-conditioning. You can always leave it in a bit longer or switch to another conditioner specifically for the result you want to achieve.

AM: What’s the best water temperature to use when rinsing it?

MS: I prefer luke-warm to cool water, because it helps the cuticle of the hair close during the rinse, which makes the hair shiny and sleek.

AM: How much conditioner should be used for every inch of hair?

MS: It depends on the density, or thickness of the hair. Again, follow the manufacturer’s directions on how much to apply. Many suggest the amount of a quarter however if hair is thinner or really thick you may need more or less.

AM: What are some ingredients that can weigh hair down?

MS: Oils and certain types of silicones can weigh hair down. However, some formulas include these ingredients intentionally, because of the smoothing effect that they create on the hair. This is why it’s important not to leave it in too long and to make sure to get it all out unless it’s a leave-in conditioner.

AM: What ingredients should be avoided?

MS: I’m not a fan of petroleum jelly, or mineral oil. There’s a lot of controversy surrounding silicone, but what most people don’t know is that silicones get a really bad rap because they’re commonly associated with silicones found in products that aren’t made for your hair. Cosmetic-grade silicones like dimethicone actually creates slip, protects the hair from breakage, and helps the hair shaft retain moisture during the styling process.

AM: What about conditioners for color-treated hair?

MS: Some ingredients can break down artificial pigment in the hair, causing it to fade, look dull, or turn brassy. Make sure that the label says that the product is color-safe. You certainly want to switch to products formulated for color-treated hair.

AM: Can I dilute a regular conditioner with water and use it as a detangler?

MS: You can, however, I recommend opting for a product that was intended to be a leave-in conditioner. This will help you avoid unnecessary build-up. Some people like to put a leave in conditioner mixed with water in a spray bottle and add it to their beach bag. After swimming they spray it in to make hair easier to comb through.

AM: What are some mistakes people make when using a leave in or a rise out conditioner?

MS: It's worth noting that over-conditioning is the most common mistake, because too much coating on the hair can cause dryness, brittleness, and ultimately breakage. Make sure you’re not leaving a conditioner in longer than 3 minutes unless the manufacturer instructs you to do so.

HOW TO CALM CRAZY WAVES AND UNRULY CURLS INTERNATIONAL CURL EXPERT SHARES TIPS

February 22, 2018

For those with naturally wavy, curly hair of all coils and textures it may seem like an endless battle to find ways to tame the mane. Some may turn to relaxers, weekly blowouts or extensions. Others just want to master their natural hair in whatever mood it seems to be in. To help girls get a handle on their curls we connected with Maya Smith, founder of The Doux salon and product line of the same name both specializing in making the absolute most of the natural hair you’re born with. When it comes to healthy sculptured, cool looking curls of all types, Maya’s two decades of experience with curls worldwide makes her a true expert. Here she offers tips on how to calm crazy waves and unruly curls.

#1: My naturally wavy hair is flat at the top and then waves start in the middle with tighter curls at the back. HELP!

Genetics determine curl pattern and density. It’s totally normal, in fact, quite common for several different textures to exist on the same head of hair. These inconsistencies can cause the hair to look uneven, and are most apparent once the hair has dried. I created The Doux’s Mousse Def, to help define waves and curls in the less curly areas, and to combat frizz in the areas that are tightly coiled. To balance the look of curly and wavy hair, we recommend using a combo of a mousse on the straighter areas, and then a balm like The Doux’s Bonita Afro Balm Texture Cream for added stretch and control in the tighter areas. The goal here is to keep hair shiny, touchable, and soft. If shrinkage or frizzing remains an issue, don’t underestimate the power of a great haircut. Awesome products combined with a professionally-shaped set of layers is my signature Rx for accentuating curls that vary in texture.

#2: I have curly hair and let it dry naturally. The second it rains, I get frizzy at the roots. I find myself revolving my hairstyle around the weather report. HELP!

Thirsty hair will try to “drink up” moisture in the air if it’s not adequately hydrated.

The key to eliminating frizz due to humidity exposure is to make sure that the hair is thoroughly conditioned before styling products are applied. This exact problem is what inspired me to create a solution in the form of a Fresh Rinse Moisturizing Conditioner, followed by The Light Shine Mist helps to hydrate and stabilize the cuticle, making it less prone to reversion. For added control at the roots, we apply a small amount of Bonita Afro Balm, which is our secret weapon for keeping curly hair from swelling in harsh weather conditions. These products can be found at select Target stores nationwide and at TheDoux.com.

#3: I often wear my curly hair slicked back into a tight low bun or ponytail. Will this damage my hair?

Style in moderation. Traction alopecia is a major epidemic among women with textured hair. This is typically the result of too much tension being applied to scalp for an extended period of time, and usually occurs due to hair styling such as braids, extensions, and tight ponytails. To avoid irreversible thinning of the hair, it’s important to avoid hairstyles that place constant pressure on hair, particularly in the temple and nape areas. Ponytails and “slicked” styles should be taken down at night, and tight accessories, such as headbands or scrunchies should be worn less frequently.

#4: I wear my naturally kinky hair twisted and braided. How long could I leave this style in and how best to shampoo my hair while in this style?

I recommend shampooing once per week for hair with fine-to-medium density. I urge clients with high-density or extremely long hair, not to exceed more than 10 days without cleansing the hair and scalp. This helps eliminate bacterial growth that causes itching, flaking, and dandruff on the scalp. We use The Doux’s Sucka Free Moisturizing Shampoo to remove product build-up and dead skill cells, and Fresh Rinse Moisturizing Conditioner to soften, hydrate, and balance the hair’s pH. We’ve incorporated Shea Butter and Sea Silk to smooth the hair shaft and aid in moisture retention.

#5: What are some ingredients to avoid that many products for curly hair contain? Why is this damaging?

Petroleum-based “grease,” as well as products that contain mineral oil may be old-school favorites, but are often the cause of dry hair. Heavy products that aren’t water soluble can coat the hair shaft, disrupting the hair’s natural ability to retain moisture. This dryness may go nearly undetected, because the hair is covered in product, however, the underlying dehydration causes hair to be brittle and stubborn. We recommend cream-based products that shampoo out easily, and allow the hair to “breathe.”

AM JAN TALKING LOCKS WITH ANDREW FITZSIMONS-1.jpg

TALKING LOCKS WITH ANDREW FITZSIMONS

January 19, 2018

Awards Season brings a number of our faves together and we had the moment to catch up with Andrew Fitzsimons, Celebrity Hair Stylist. We caught up with him to find out about must have tips that we should use when we're prepping our locks, how he got into the business and what he's up to.

ATHLEISURE MAG: You have rocked amazing hair on some of our favorite celebrities. Tell us when you realized that you wanted to be a hairstylist and your journey to becoming the stylist for the Kardashians, Joan Smalls, Ashley Graham, etc?

ANDREW FITZSIMONS: I fell into hair styling at a very young age when my mom got me a summer job at a local hair salon when I was 13. I loved the work so much that when I returned to school, I realized school wasn’t for me. After much begging, my mum allowed me to pursue my dream full time, but with the conditions that I be kind to everyone, never take a sick day and work to the top of my field. I’m still working on #3!

AM: As the Alterna Hair Care Brand Ambassador, what does this role entail and how did you become this?

AF: One of the biggest parts of my job as Alterna Haircare’s brand ambassador is teaching women how they can use the products to get healthy, shiny, red carpet-ready hair! A lot of women struggle with styling and caring for their hair, but with the right products, it can be much easier. In addition to education, I work with Alterna on product formulation, trend forecasting, photo shoots and video shoots, events and so much more! I love getting to share my love of beauty.

AM: We're in the thick of Awards Season right now - what are 10 products/tools that you always have on hand?

AF: Toothbrush – My secret weapon for cleaning up baby hairs and flyaways!

Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer – This dryer is super lightweight; light tools are essential for hairdressers.

GHD Curling Irons – I love these irons because they heat up so fast and are ceramic, so they help protect the hair more than most curling irons. I also like that they’re all matte black, it makes my kit look really chic.

Glam Seamless Extensions – I carry extensions in every color imaginable, and lately, I've been stocking up on these, which I love.

Babylisspro Nano Titanium Flat Iron – This is my favorite flat iron ever, been using it for years. It gets hair perfectly straight and shiny!

Alterna Haircare Anti-Frizz Omega+ Nourishing Oil – I’m obsessed with this moisturizing, super lightweight oil. It’s extremely versatile, so I’m able to use it on all of my clients, no matter their
hair type. It gives the hair a beautiful, healthy shine and provides light definition without weighing the hair down at all.

Alterna Haircare Caviar Working Hair Spray – This buildable hair spray is a must for all of my jobs! It gives you a great brushable hold with no stickiness or tackiness.

Alterna Haircare Caviar Repair Multi-Vitamin Heat Protection Spray – My clients put their faith in me that I’m going to take care of their hair, so heat protection is a must! So many people skip this step, but it’s essential for keeping your hair healthy and strong.

Alterna Haircare Perfect Texture Finishing Spray – This spray is the perfect combination of the hold of a hairspray and the buildable texture of a dry shampoo. Perfect for those effortless
looking, model-off-duty vibes.

Rita Hazan Root Concealer – This is perfect for root touch ups!

AM: You're fresh from the Golden Globes, can you tell us as a stylist what the prep is like before Awards Day in terms of coordinating the hair inspiration with the other components of the look, what your schedule was like in terms of how many/who you styled that day, your prep to get ready, how much time you spent styling each of the looks and once completed what do you after a long day of this nature?

AF: Usually before a big awards show, I’ll be in regular contact with my client, my client’s stylist and my client’s makeup artist. We all review the dress and I create a mood board of ideas based on the dress. At the recent Globes, I had two clients: Kendall Jenner for the Globes and Shay Mitchell for the parties. Typically, there are 2-3 hours for glam and getting dressed, so it’s not unusual to have several clients in one day. Once all my clients are done, I typically rush home with my assistant so we can watch the event coverage – it’s fun to see the looks on the red carpet.

AM: As someone who is constantly on the go from set, red carpets etc how do you take time for yourself?

AF: I really enjoy working out – it helps get me into a zone where I’m just focused on one thing (typically I’m juggling a bunch of jobs and projects, so there’s a lot on my mind). It’s a good way to “press reset” in a way. Yoga is another workout I love, and if I’m having a really busy day, I try to meditate for a few minutes in the car between clients.

AM: When you have downtime, what would we find you doing?

AF: Down time?! I don’t have that… In seriousness, I work every day and am always working on new projects and ideas.

AM: What are 3 places that we would find you grabbing a drink in LA, having a meal with friends and where do you workout?

AF: To me, having wine at a friend’s house is much better than going out! It’s so much more relaxed and fun. For a meal, I love Casa Vega – it’s a staple in the Valley and I love it’s history
(and of course the delicious food!)

For workouts I love Barry’s Bootcamp and Soul Cycle.

AM: What's your personal style in terms of what you wear when you're out with your friends brunching, versus what you were when you're on your way to meeting your clients for Awards
Season to get them ready for the red carpet?

AF: I have a very consistent wardrobe – I’m typically wearing an oversized white tee, black jeans, black boots and a black leather jacket (depending on the weather!). I like to have a fairly
clean / consistent uniform.

AM: What charities/philanthropies do you support?

AF: I actually recently partnered with the LA LGBT Center to launch the Trans Cosmetic Donation Program, an innovative charity program in which beauty professionals, influencers and celebrities can donate unused personal care products to the LA LBGT Center, and they redistribute the products to various charities that serve trans women of color in Southern California.

AM: We can see you having a haircare line, extension brand etc - how else do you want to extend your skills for those that may not be able to have you personally do their hair?

AF: I will be launching a YouTube Channel soon! I’m really excited to have an online platform where I can translate the red carpet styles of celebrities to more women. There are few more
projects I can’t talk about quite yet…

AM DEC DOING THE DOUX-1.jpg

DOING THE DOUX

January 12, 2018

Maya Smith has been showing love to hair of all textures for years as an International Master Trainer who got her start as an assistant to celebrity hairstylist, Tracy Johnson. This military wife and mother of 5, opened The Honey Comb in Germany while her husband was stationed there. Her clients spanned from those in Europe as well as Africa as she was known for styling hair of all texture types.

Maya launched her haircare line with a cult following, The DOUX® initially overseas in Germany, France, Italy and Netherlands. When she came back to the states, she opened The DOUX salon in Macon, Georgia. This Christmas Eve, THE DOUX will be sold nationwide in Target. With the colder weather setting in, she shares tips on how to work with curly hair, select products and care for it.

People with wavy or curly hair are always looking for new products, tips and tricks to lock in their desired look. Whether they want to blow it straight, create looser curls or maximize their tighter coils, she shares her best tips for girls with curls who want to revel in their natural hair and create a style they love.

Understand the battle between oil and moisture.

The first thing people must understand is that there are opposite things going on at the same time. “Due to the shape of curly haired strands, the hair tends to be under moisturized. On the other hand, the curly haired scalp can get very oily. Managing these opposite demands is the struggle of girls who wish to keep their curls. The key here is knowing how best to address both,” explains Maya who led the movement for women to transition from relaxers to natural curls.

Be gentle when washing curly hair.

According to Maya, kinky, thick, coiled textures tend to appear “tough” and strong enough to withstand heavy manipulation. "in my experience, these hair types are actually the most delicate, and should be handled with care, she recommends.”

Step One: Pick your products wisely.

Maya applied over 2 decades of research and development based on working knowledge of hair texture and listening to what people wanted. “I created The Doux™ SUCKA FREE Moisturizing Shampoo and FRESH RINSE Moisturizing Conditioner as the one-two step that delivers both deep cleaning plus exceptional nourishment necessary for styling.”

Step Two: Prep for shampoo.

Maya’s professional instructions for curl mastery begins with rinsing hair thoroughly with water for a minimum of 30 seconds. “This helps to eliminate any water-soluble product buildup, such as hair gel or heat protectant. It also helps you save shampoo! Assuming you’re shampooing in the shower, letting the water run over the hair in a downward motion helps prevent further tangling, and allows the hair shaft to swell and the curl pattern to fully rebound.” For those with extremely thick hair, Maya suggests separating hair into 4 sections prior to wetting the hair for increased manageability.

Once the shampoo is applied, Maya recommends light manipulation at the scalp, going from the crown of the head to the nape of the neck. “Squishing” the hair up toward the scalp is a no-no. “Shampooing this way can cause unforgivable tangling and matting. I recommend repeating the shampooing process at least once.”

Step Three: Condition and comb through like a pro.

If your scalp was properly shampooed, conditioning is easy. “This time, you’re focusing on your thirsty ends first, working upward toward the scalp. Gently detangle with a wide-toothed comb
or detangling brush (the favorite is Felicia Leatherwood's "Brush with the Best” detangling brush) before rinsing, starting at the ends, working up toward to the roots. Remember to rinse with cool water which snaps cuticles shut, locks in moisture, makes your hair shinier and reduces frizz.”

When it comes to “co-washing” or “conditioner washing,” Maya equates the popular trend to washing your clothes with fabric softener. “In my experience, co-washing causes build-up on the hair, coating the cuticle and impairing the hair’s natural ability to absorb water. Oils, waxes,
and product residue harden on the hair shaft, making it more brittle and less porous over time. When the hair can no longer effectively absorb water, the elasticity of the hair is compromised, leaving the hair “crunchy” and stiff, where it is more likely to break. The result is hair that feels
dry and brittle, no matter what product you use to moisturize it,” explains Maya.

One of the things Maya Smith and her team of stylists are known for is their ability to restore hundreds of their clients’ curls, simply by getting them to trade in the co-wash for a gentle, pH-balanced moisturizing shampoo, like The Doux’s SUCKA FREE which properly cleanses hair of product residue. “Once you have the hair thoroughly clean it “drinks” up the necessary amount of moisture, and returns to its natural softness,” Maya clarifies.

Maya Smith.jpg

Avoid alcohol and kick the crunch to the curb.

Styling products high in alcohol give curls a crunchy feel. They suck up every last bit of moisture. Hair spray tends to contain the most alcohol, while gels, mousses and anything that provides hold or lift come in second. “I recommend water-soluble gels that don't feel sticky on your skin, and aerated mousses or foams that resemble beaten egg whites, to give hair fullness,
control, and non-brittle curls," Maya says.

She adds that she created The Doux so it can be used on hair that is worn curly or straight. "Our clients purchase one set of products, and apply them differently to achieve the style they want. If you’re rocking curly hair today, you’re using The Doux’s Mousse Def and Bonita Afro
Balm for softness and definition, and The Light for shine. If you’re wearing a blowout, you’re still using the same products, but applying them less liberally, and using the shine mist as a heat protectant. It’s super simple and easy to follow once you’ve seen the results each of them deliver,” Maya explains.

Products.jpg

Blow-Dry with a diffuser or hooded dryer.

Maya’s first choice for curly styles is to air dry. “If you don't have the time to air dry, then dry with a diffuser or hooded dryer on a low heat setting. A regular blow dryer nozzle disrupts the curl pattern and focuses hot air on one small section at a time, while a diffuser, dries curls evenly for a full, uniform look,” she explains.

Maya recommends always applying a heat-protecting product, then flipping your head upside down using a diffuser at the roots and mid-length making sure to dry the area completely to lock in volume. “It’s important to leave the ends for last, and leave them only semi-dry. Air drying the ends is your best option.” Care for the curls you were born with!

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | THE BIKINI LINE

July 6, 2017

Hair removal is a year around process and not just one that should come to mind during the summer. With that said, this time of year - there seems to be a targeted focus on the bikini
line when you're rocking your favorite swim and summer looks!

We have been fans of Shobha for years as they offer a number of options to rock fierce brows and to remove hair across your body with a number of methods. They're also about using the safest and most natural means to do so. Our team has been going here for years and we took some time to chat with Shobha's CEO and Founder Shobha Tummala to understand more
about the world of hair removal.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Hair Removal is a hot topic whether you're tackling your bikini line, eyebrows or other portions of your body. We know you offer threading, sugaring, waxing and laser as methods of hair removal. Why would one choose these methods of hair removal when coming to Shobha?

SHOBHA TUMMALA: Threading is the most precise form of hair removal which is why we only offer threading options for the brows. It allows you to pull one hair at a time which gives you
the control of tweezing, but you can pull an entire row of hair which gives you a nice line for brow shaping. People sometimes have the misconception that because the specialist uses
her mouth as an anchor for the thread that it is unsanitary but that’s totally untrue. The part of the string that touches her mouth never makes contact with the client's skin.

Sugaring is an all-natural alternative to waxing, which is great for those who have sensitive skin! Also, sugaring tends to be gentler than waxing because the Shobha Sugaring Gel attaches more to the hair and less to the skin, thus causes less irritation.

Laser gives the comfort of being able to wear whatever, whenever you want without questioning when the last time you went to Shobha for a wax. In more technical terms, laser is a permanent form of hair reduction. It eliminates the targeted hairs for good, which also means it takes care of bumps and ingrowns (no hair, no hair to become ingrown), leaving you with
super smooth skin!

AM: The bikini line is always something that many think about once the weather gets warm. What are some tips that people should know upon their first visit to Shobha upon getting this treatment?

ST: Here at Shobha we always recommend for our clients to be:

Clean – bathe like you would if you were going to a doctor’s appointment.

Dry – cleanliness is appreciated, but please skip the lotion, you'll get better results if your skin is less oily.

Hairy – your hair should be at least 1/4 inch in length (which makes it long enough to lay flat on your skin).

If hairs are still sticking straight out, you should probably wait a few more days. Also, if you are usually a "shaver" your hair should be slightly longer for the best results. Shaving can cause hair re-growth to be uneven, in which some hairs can be too short to be removed with wax or sugaring gel and may result in the appearance of stubble after your first treatment. Always try to wait at least 2 weeks from your last shave before a waxing/sugaring
treatment.

AM: What upkeep is needed for the bikini line and is it different for those that opt for lasering, sugaring or waxing at Shobha?

ST: The huge difference between the upkeep needed for the bikini line between sugaring/waxing services and laser is with our laser services we do not want you to be tan when you come in – whether that’s a tan from the sun or a sunless tanner. You will get burned or have adverse effects if you have some sort of tan when you come in. The laser is trained to go after the pigment which affects the type of laser that will be most effective for you.

Also, for laser we actually encourage you to shave 24 hours before your laser appointment – sounds crazy right? Shaving before laser appointments is super important because it allows the laser to zap the targeted hairs at the roots. With sugaring and waxing we never want you
to shave between services because it causes uneven hair regrowth.

AM: What is the Shobha method and why is it better for your clients to receive their treatments here?

ST: The signature Shobha Method is our tried and true method for getting rid of unwanted body hair. We always use our own exclusive wax and sugaring gel consisting of a proprietary formula and implement the Shobha Method thus giving super smooth results.

Our formula effectively removes hair from the root - contains azulene oil, a natural anti-inflammatory derived from the chamomile plant to soothe the skin during the treatment. We’re fast and efficient - large areas can be waxed at once (most of our appointments are under 30
minutes!). Our ingredients are safe - free of artificial fragrance and parabens.

AM: One of the biggest reasons why we have been coming to Shobha for years is that you use a lot of natural products which are great for the skin and don't have toxic chemicals - can you share information about these in-house Shobha products?

ST: Sure! We have always made it a main priority of ours to make natural, yet effective products that educates our client on the importance of what they put on their skin. For example, we can proudly tout that since 2008, after reading the initial reports of the possible links between cancer and talc, we developed our own safe alternative - Shobha® Talc-Free Powder. Click here for our full line of professional grade products that are safe enough to use at home .

AM: You've had great growth in Manhattan, Georgetown and in Rockville, Maryland - are there additional locations that you may be popping up in?

ST: YES! We’re super excited to announce that Shobha Brooklyn is (slowly, but surely) under construction and we expect to open its doors by fall of 2017. It will be located in Williamsburg
at 76 North 4th Street (between Wythe Ave & Berry Street).

AM: Are there other summer focused treatments (although we know they are available year around) that people come to beyond their bikini lines?

ST: We’ve noticed that our clients are loving getting laser hair removal on the bikini area which also allows them to customize the hair down there if they don’t want to be completely bare.

AM: Are there other treatments that you will be bringing into the salon that you can tell us about?

ST: Yes, we’re always looking to bring new services in the salons! You’ll have to stay tuned to stay-in-the know about all of our deals & our happenings! Be sure to check back often
