LASER FOCUS

May 27, 2016

Every second of summer (or almost summer) is meant to be enjoyed hanging with friends, spending every moment outside and more. Anything that we can do to ensure that we're able to enjoy is worth it for the ultimate optimization of the upcoming season. We chatted with Spruce & Bond specialist, Keiann Roberts about laser hair removal and how you can be prepared for your treatments. These tips will make your sessions easier, whether it's your first time or your a veteran.

1. Shave before your appointment so the technician can place the laser directly on the root of the hair.

2. At Spruce & Bond our lasers have a setting that adjusts to not only your skin type, but your hair type as well. The laser fires a concentrated beam of light that’s directed at the pigment in your hair follicles. This kills the follicle at its root, preventing them from growing back.

3. Avoid waxing up to 4 weeks before your appointment. The laser targets the pigment of your hair follicle, and the follicle actually has to be there in order for this to work.

4. It takes at least 5-6 sessions to achieve perfection.

5. Stay consistent with your appointments. Space them out every 4-6 weeks so you hair has enough time to cycle as your hair follicles are on their own growth cycle.

6. Some hair and skin types might be a little harder to treat, but it’s still possible. Dark hair follicles are usually easy to treat because, again, the laser targets the hair’s pigment. This is also why gray, white, blonde, and red pigments can be tricky. Spruce & Bond uses a Gentlelase Laser which is color blind, meaning that it has the ability to target any color hair on any skin tone.

7. Avoid direct sunlight on that area and always use a moisturizer with SPF to prevent additional redness.

8.  During your treatment, the sensation will feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin. Each session is about 20-30 minutes depending on what you are getting done.

9. During the next day or two after, it’s normal for your skin to appear a little red. Avoid excessive heat and apply Aloe Vera to relive redness.

10.   The permanent results from your laser hair removal are something you will never forget!

SAFE SUN Q&A

May 26, 2016

Temperatures are beginning to rise and layers are sure to come off; however, SPF is not a seasonal topic only! We sat down with Rebecca Kazin, MD, of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery and the Johns Hopkins Department of Dermatology to chat about Safe Sun, UVA/UVB.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Why is Safe Sun important and what does it mean?

REBECCA KAZIN MD: As people start to have more outdoor activities on their agendas, you need to be aware to protect skin now, and all summer long - whether you are exercising outside or at the beach. Being aware of the the dangers of sun exposure for both skin cancer and aging concerns is paramount to protecting yourself. Sun safe means taking protective measures when spending time outdoors to shield skin from direct UVA/UVB exposure.

AM: What should we look for what it comes to picking the best protection from the sun?

RK MD: Always choose an SPF of at least 30. SPF 30 is as high as you truly need as long as you remember to apply every 2 hours. If you have sensitive skin, physical blocks tend to be less irritating to skin. If you choose a chemical block, Mexoryl is a good UVA blocker in Anthelios.

AM: Do you have brands to suggest that we should have within our sun protection rotation?

RK MD: La Roche Posay Anthelios is a favorite. I also like Elta MD and SkinCeuticals Matte UV Defense SPF 50 because it goes on matte. For drugstore brands, I like Neutrogena.

AM: Is there any pre and/or post prep needed when you're spending time in the sun?

RK MD: Ideally, you should apply your sunscreen 1/2 an hour before sun exposure.

AM: What are your thoughts on suncare products that are edible that are meant for providing "natural SPF" such as Heliocare?

RK MD: I'm not sure how sophisticated this technology is right now. It needs more study to determine what level of SPF protection this is providing and how it would compare or integrate into our topical sunscreen use.

AM: Beyond topical care, what other ways can we have the benefits of SPF beyond creams and sprays?

RK MD: Sun protective clothing - hats and swim shirts. I like Coolibar for clothing with SPF woven in.

AM: How can we treat eyes, hair and nails to ensure that they are protected?

RK MD: Sunglasses, hats and extend SPF coverage to your fingers and hands.

Embrace Hat Hair - The scalp is skin too and needs protection from UV rays and DNA damage. The best way to keep your scalp (and hair) safe is by wearing a hat – floppy brims offer good coverage for the face too.

Switch Up Your Part – Make sure you cover your part when you’re out in the sun and try to alternate the way your part hair from day to day to avoid one area soaking up all the sun exposure.

Explore UV Fabrics – If you’re a beach bunny, try a hat with built in UV protection from a brand like Coolibar.

Cancel Your Bi-Weekly Blowout - You may think that hair acts as a protective layer over your scalp in the summer, but your strands are susceptible to sun damage, too. Cumulative exposure to damaging UV rays causes hair to be brittle, break easily, and leaves it dehydrated and unmanageable. Give your hair a break between blowouts, especially in hot, humid weather.

Style Smart - If you must heat style, use a leave in conditioner and don’t blowdry or iron your hair without using a heat protectant first. For summer, I like the Phyto Phytokeratine Repairing Thermal Protectant Spray. It is easy to use because it is a spray on product and works to rehydrate over exposed frazzled hair.

AM: Are there times that we should avoid the sun?

RK MD: Sun is strongest from 10-2, so try to limit exposure during that time. Also if you are on medicines that make you sun-sensitive, like some antibiotics.

AM: How many times should we apply SPF?

RK MD: Every two hours if you are in direct sunlight. On a daily basis, definitely in the morning before work. Then you can try to remember to reapply at lunchtime.

AM: What is UVA/UVB and why is it important to use products that include both?

RK MD: They are the different wave lengths for ultra violet light. UVB is the one responsible for sunburns. UVA can cause skin cancer and premature photoaging, so it's important that SPFs cover both wavelengths.

AM: If we have been out in the sun for too long (even when we had SPF) - what should we do to protect it during our aftercare process?

RK MD: If you have a sunburn, soothe skin with aloe to minimize irritation from the burn.

AM: We know we've heard it before but do we really have to wear SPF even in the winter or when the sun isn't out and if your skin is darker (those who are naturally brown) - do we need SPF?

RK MD: You do need to wear SPF even in the winter, because you are still getting exposed to UV light. Same goes for cloudy days. If you have melasma, light in the office or indoors can also activate your melanocytes and perpetuate hyperpigmentation. For darker skin, pigmentation is such an issue, so SPF is still essential. Plus darker skin is still at risk for photoaging.

AM: What are the telltale signs that we have damaged our skin due to being in the sun?

RK MD: Brown spots, broken capillaries, pink splotchy skin, premature wrinkling, thin skin, sagging skin with a leathery texture.

3 Time Mirror Ball Winner, Dancing with the Stars, Kym Johnson

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY | Kym Johnson

AND 5, 6, 7, 8 .... KYM JOHNSON

May 26, 2016

Australian beauty, Kym Johnson is a Three-Time Dancing with the Stars Mirror Ball winner (2 in the US and 1 in Australia) as well as a judge for DWTS in Australia currently. We sat down with this busy dancer to find out about her new fitness program, DWTS and of course her upcoming wedding to SHARK TANK's Robert Herjavec.

ATHLEISURE MAG: We loved seeing you on Dancing with the Stars, how is it being on DWTS Australia as a judge versus one of the dancers?

KYM JOHNSON: I have to work out a lot more when I am being a judge since I'm not dancing every single day I like I did when I was on the show. So you're not getting that workout. But I love being a judge as I find myself dancing along with them under my desk. I really like it as I judge for DWTS in Australia so I get to be at home and see my family. It's 3 months of every year which is not a long time. I enjoy it - occasionally, I am used to being on the dance floor but you can't dance forever, so it's nice to transition into other things.

AM: When you were a dancer on Dancing with the Stars, what was a typical day like from doing your own workouts, preparing dances for each episode and practicing the dances leading up to each night?

KJ: Oh my gosh it's nonstop! When you are a dancer on DWTS you can seriously kiss goodbye a life for those three months, and even more. We rehearse with our celebrities 6 - 7 hours a day and then when we're not with them, we rehearse for professional numbers on the show or we are choreographing numbers for the next week - we do all of the choreography and we plan all of the costumes to fit the music!

AM: Costumes too!?!

KJ: We have an incredible design team, but we have to come up with the concepts and talk to them about to make it come to life. But creatively, it's a lot to do which is great to have that creative freedom. But it is a lot of work so you never switch off really, although it is very rewarding. When you're done, you sort of want to hibernate after!

AM: What was one of your favorite dances that you did on DWTS, favorite outfit and partner?

KJ: Well I will have to say that Robert Herjavec is my favorite partner, especially with how it all ended up!

AM: Watching the show, we felt there was a spark there and that the two of you should totally get together! Now your planning your wedding, it's such a Cinderella moment!

KJ: I know!! I still have to pinch myself and say - like what ... it's crazy! But that's amazing. Jerry Springer was my first dance partner on DWTS in America and I just adore him, he's the nicest guy and it was really a special season and of course I won the first Mirror Ball with Donny Osmond. My favorite dance would be the freestyle that I did with Hines Ford with the half time act during the football game. We had a marching band, we dressed up in the Steelers colors. I got to live this dream as an American cheerleader.

AM: What is a typical day like for you in terms of your fitness routine?

KJ: I work out everyday even if it is a half and hour and I'm traveling. I always fit something in. I really like to do hot yoga barre class (barre in a heated room) which always makes me feel cleansed when I leave. I do this about 3 times a week. I do a fit mix class that is essentially interval running. You run for 30 mins and the other 30 mins is on the pilates reformer machine. You get a bit of the cardio with the strength training. So I mix that up and I still dance. I have my own workout 5678 Fitness - cardio dance routine. It's really fun and I have my own workout. I take the cardio which has a little jive, samba etc., and in between I do strength routines like a 5 mins ab workout and legs. I still workout everyday as I feel better and motivated. I travel a lot and sometimes when I get off a plane I may not feel like it but once I do, it just makes everything feel the way it should. Even if it's a jump rope with interval training - doing 1 min with a jump rope and then a plank for another minute and another 1 min with hip raises. It's important to get that cardio with the strength - it's a great combination.

AM: How did 5678 Fitness and Nutrition Program come about?

KJ: People who watched DWTS would come up to me and couldn't believe that celebrities really lost all that weight on the show. But it's because they are dancing every day and you can see the transformation they have when they are on the show. I came up with 5678 Fitness with the dances that you see from the show being placed in a cardio way. When we did it on cruises, passengers enjoyed doing the steps and I knew I was onto something the way they embraced it no matter the age. You don't realize you're working out because you are doing the steps and enjoying the music - you burn a lot of calories. That's why I wanted to come out with it.

In addition to the fitness component, I came out with 5678 Nutrition because I am not dancing every day and I have to watch what I eat so the diet is important. When I did DWTS, I could probably get away with some fries and hamburgers because I was always dancing 8 hours a day (no one can train 8 hours a day). I still indulge in a burger and fries, but I switch it up where maybe I have some sweet potato fries or a burger without the bun instead. It's about making choices. With the book, I had the opportunity to work with a nutritionist and we came up with a diet that really works well for me. It's not one that you would fall off from - it's more of one that allows you to have an easy lifestyle. It has great exercises and a 14 day diet plan that you can follow along with the exercises as well as the DVD which has the actual workouts. It's also on my website and you can download it from there as well.

AM: How do you balance your busy schedule, staying fit and your upcoming nuptials with Robert (PS we're Shark Tank fans and think you guys are adorable)?

KJ: I love being busy! I would do DWTS for 3 months and then I would take a week off and be totally bored and ready for the next thing. It's essential for me to take time for myself each day whether it's a fitness class, doing a walk or just something where there is time for you. I do it every day.

AM: When you're not busy, what's your go to look that we'd see you rocking to run errands, go to brunch etc.?

KJ: At the moment I am sitting here with white jeans and a white top with my runners. It's a nice hot day here in LA and I thought I would be springy wearing white. I love some jeans or cut offs with a T-shirt. It's all about relaxed and easy.

AM: To get fabulous summer legs like yours, what are 3 workouts we should include?

KJ: Dancer legs are from pulling up all the time. Pilates is great for legs. The ballet barre is amazing as you want to tone your hips and your butt. Hip raises are really good as they work the back of your legs and give you nice definition to keep you long and lean. Any kind of ballet barre where you are pulsing your leg and you are getting the crease behind your butt - in dancing you're constantly engaging your legs and pulling up (all about your thighs and legs being pulled up). That's how you get dancer legs pack your butt under and pulls legs up even do leg lifts.

Our May cover is graced by Layla Luciano, a celebrity fitness trainer based here in NYC who has not only been noted as one of the city's hottest trainers, and also was one of the stars of Bravo's Workout New York and is the Co-Founder of PACT PARK! We sat down with Layla to find out more about her, the show and what she is working on!

ATHLEISURE MAG: When did you realize that you wanted to work in the fitness industry?

LAYLA LUCIANO: I have always been extremely active and full of energy ever since I was a kid. I played basketball, baseball, did track and field, gymnastics and martial arts. I started martial arts when I was 5, and because I was so dedicated, I earned my first degree black belt when I was only 11. When I received my black belt, I started assisting teaching classes for the children's program and I loved it! In high school, I volunteered to teach for my karate dojo to blind and visually impaired students. These experiences truly made me fall in love with teaching, and so when I went to college, I majored in elementary education. When I started student teaching in NYC public schools in Harlem, I thought I would automatically fall in love it. I fell in love with the kids, but not the curriculum system. I also saw all of the kids’ unhealthy eating habits, their school lunches and the fact that they only get half an hour of recess. Kids naturally have so much energy and need to burn some of that off throughout the day in order to really concentrate on school work! Instead of continuing on to teach the K-6 curriculum for NYC public schools, I started my own after school programs and summer camps for kids fitness. I taught a Latin dance program and a karate program, but the underlying idea for both of these programs was teaching my students the importance of building healthy bodies and lifestyles! I always knew I loved helping people better themselves, so two years later I continued to share my passion for fitness by developing and creating my own classes at various NYC fitness studios, including bootcamp, pilates and kickboxing.

AM: What areas do you feel are your expertise within fitness?

LL: In terms of training techniques and working with clients, because I'm fluent in a variety of workout styles, I feel like I'm very good at creating programs for clients so that they see the changes they want to see and they never get bored! I'm also very good at teaching two groups at once, like I did at Barry's Bootcamp for over 4 years.

AM: What's your style when training clients and where have you been an instructor in NYC?

LL: My style is tough love, but fun. I will make you work hard and push you to do so!  I've been an instructor at NDG Fitness, SLT and Barry's Bootcamp.

AM: We are fans of Bravo's Work Out New York, what was it like to be in the cast?

LL: Filming Work Out New York was definitely a rollercoaster ride. Some days I loved being in front of the camera, and some days I would be so tired from teaching, training clients, training myself and filming all day that I was cranky and over it! I was excited to share about my life as a fitness professional in NYC with a very different upbringing than most. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of how much editing could be done to manipulate any situation. As a fitness professional who wants to motivate and inspire, I feel like there were some aspects of my life that were highly dramatized that even made me a little uncomfortable watching, since it wasn't truly me (more like Layla multiplied by 1000).

AM: Is there another season for you/the cast and who from the show do you hangout with?

LL: We are still waiting to find out! I still hang out with Courtney, because we are from the same crazy person planet so we understand each other :P

AM: We know that you and Jay have your own studio fitness, tell us more about PACT PARK!

LL: PACT PARK is a high intensity, but low impact group fitness experience. The unique workout combines boxing and MMA strike training on a Nexersys machine that calculates strikes, accuracy, power AND friction training on a Lynx board, which concentrates on mobility, balance, control and coordination, using body weight training to maximize form, speed and power. PACT means Proprioceptive Aerobic Cross Training. Proprioceptive is about body awareness, knowing exactly what you're doing not by seeing, but just doing. The aerobic cross-training is by going back and forth between the Nexersys machine and the Lynx board. And a Park is just a fun place!

At PACT PARK, we give you metrics and data from the Nexersys machine to help you progress and give you results to improve your body & mind! You get a great release being able to hit the machine. We are also focused on training your body safely on the Lynx board because you're not jumping, you're sliding, which helps strengthen your joints and ligaments in a low impact manner. And on the machine, the pads give a little resistance when you punch them and are safer than hitting a punching bag.

In March, we started doing 30 minute pop up classes at Hub Seventeen in Lululemon Flatiron on 17th St. and 5th Ave before the studio itself opens to create some buzz and have people try out the new workout! We will continue these pop up classes throughout the summer until we open our first permanent location in NYC by Fall 2016 as that's the priority right now!

AM: For those who want an amazing booty this summer, what 3 workouts can we do?

LL: Understanding the three main parts of your booty will help you understand the movements you need to make in order to work it in every possible way for the perfect shape all around! Hip thrusters for optimal hip extension for the gluetus maximus. For gluteus medius and minimus fire hydrants with ankle weights and lateral band walks (with the band around the ankle).

AM: What's your personal style when you're at the gym and then going out?

LL: My gym style is the same as when I'm teaching a class or training a client because I usually go from one to the other. I love my sports bras to be a bright pop of color with sexy straps (like the Lululemon Free to Be Wild bra). I love tight tank tops that are either cropped or go just past the belly button (I usually end up cutting all of my tank tops to that length if they are too long). I love playing with different bottoms especially since I'm an ambassador for Carbon38. I get to try out all different designs and styles! When I'm going out I love to really play dress up since I live in workout clothes all day! My going out style is very sexy, but trendy.

AM: How did you get into aerial? how did you get into it?

LL: When I was about two years into my fitness career teaching bootcamps, lifting weights and doing boxing and muy thai, I felt like I was missing something. I've always loved competing in kata at my martial arts tournaments. Kata is a detailed choreographed of movements and strikes with a goal to internalize the movements and techniques so they can be executed and adapted under different circumstances without thought or hesitation. Competing in kata in tournaments was almost like a performance since you are judged on technique, style, balance, timing, and verisimilitude! I love being a strong, badass but I was missing the combination of that with style, grace and performance. That is how I discovered aerial three years ago!

AM: From the show, we can see that you have a great sense of self, are comfortable in your own skin and are able to speak your truth without reservation. How did you get that sensibility?

LL: I was born and raised in NYC (that alone will make you tough) with a strong, loving mom who truly taught me to love myself and that is how I was raised it wasn't until I start- ed modeling towards the end of high school and into college that I become very self concious. At that time my particular look was "too exotic" and I had "curves" (which is an
outrageous statement because when I look back at pictures of myself from then, I was so
skinny...I just had a little wider hip!)  As tough as you are, comments like that over and over again start to get to you. When I started com paring myself to other models, that's when I realized this world wasn't healthy for me and I found myself again through where I started, fitness! Everyone wants to look good but make sure you are also doing it for your health and for the good feelings you get when you make yourself better and stronger!

In Step, Layla Luciano fashion editorial was shot at The Colorado (201 E 86th St) and Pure Barre (1325 Lexington Ave) on the UES in NYC.

PEDIS ON POINT

May 22, 2016

We should always take care of our skin; however, there are times that certain areas take precedent . With the summer looming ahead, it's pedicure season. It's time to give a little love to your feet. Whether you take care of your feet at home regularly or between salon sessions want to do some upkeep - we have the perfect tips so that you're feet are always on point.

STEP 1: SOAK + EXFOLIATE

Submerge your feet into a tub of warm water to begin to soften the skin. Add in a handful of your favorite scrub to massage into your skin. You should choose a product that is an oil based product that will supply moisture while it takes away dead and dry skin. Once you have completed this, rinse and pat your feet dry. Make sure that you use a dry foot file to remove the rest of unwanted skin.

STEP 2: MOISTURIZE

Feet seriously come to life when they are hydrated. Apply a rich foot cream by massaging into your skin to ensure that every portion of your foot is soft. Make sure to get your heels, cuticles and in between your toes.

STEP 3: FILE IT AWAY

Make sure to file your nails straight across to create a shape.

STEP 4: POLISH

Before applying your polish of choice, make sure that all oils are removed from your nails (use polish remover for a clean surface).  The perfect pedi includes a base coat, two coats of nail color and a topcoat.

STEP 5: DRY

It's tempting to step into your shoes (even when you're rocking sandals) but toes need 15 mins (if you really have time to kick back - it can take nearly 2 hours to be completely dry).  We suggest that you add in quick dry drops after you have applied your topcoat!

By placing these components under one roof, they had the ability to create a transformational mind body spa and fitness center together.

This idea became a reality when she reached out to her founding team members which ncludes Julia Sutton (COO). To fuse her vision of fitness and spa together, she looked no further then two of her teachers who worked at Lotte Berk Method Studio on the UES. Frank Devito (EVP, Mind Body Classes and Training) lends his expertise to the fitness portion of the experience. Elisabeth Halfpapp (EVP, Mindbody Programming) supports the spa portion of the program.

Together, the founders continue to bring innovation to their centers while selecting the best locations. XO Kelsea Ballerini

April 14, 2016

If you're not familiar with Kelsea Ballerini, then now is a good time to check out this country-pop singer who performed and recently won her first ACM Award a few weeks ago (as well as performed with Nick Jonas) no stranger to the spotlight, she performed with Taylor Swift, appeared on Good Morning America and has appeared on this season's Nashville on ABC. Taking a breather with the release of her new video, Peter Pan, preparing to join Rascal Flatts on their upcoming tour this summer as well as performing during this year's CMA Fest, we took a moment to chat with Kelsea who is clearly a girl on the move!

ATHLEISURE MAG: Congratulations on winning your first ACM for New Female Vocalist, what went through your mind when you found out?

KELSEA BALLERINI: That I sat in the section behind the artists section last year and this year I won my first award, it's crazy how how much has happened in a year!

AM: We're excited to see you at CMA Fest this year - how do you prepare for this performance and how exciting is it for you to hit the stage in Nashville this summer?

KB: I've sat in that stadium and watched all of my favorite artists play that show for years now. I don't think I'll even know what to expect, but I'll probably walk off stage and cry.

AM: You're touring with Rascal Flatts this summer, what are must have items that you'll take with you when you're on the road that make you feel like you're "at home?"

KB: My dog, Candle (because I share a bus with 9 boys) and my best friend.

AM: You're a busy girl as your schedule has you running across the country, how do you take a moment for yourself?

KB: I'll go get a mani or a pedi or I'll go scope out the local coffee shops or some nights I just go to bed early and snuggle my dog.

AM: How do you stay in shape - do you have a favorite workout routine or bring your equipment with you?

KB: I try to eat pretty healthy on the road. I'm in so many amazing cities that I like to get out and walk my dog as much as possible, so both of us can get out and get moving.

AM: What's in your summer wardrobe that you can't wait to wear within your rotation?

KB: Fun hats, bright sunnies and floral rompers.

AM: What are your must haves when it comes to your skincare/beauty routine?

KB: Clarisonic, every night. Aragon oil when my skin is feeling dry.

AM: Speaking of beauty, we noticed that you partnered with Mary Kay for their "Don't Look Away" Campaign, how important is your involvement in
this and how did this partnership come about?

KB: I'm a big supporter of women empowering women so I was excited to be a voice for this event.

AM: Tell us about Peter Pan, your 3rd single - it has had such a great buzz to it and you recently released the video as well?

KB: It's my favorite song on my record. I feel like I get to show a different, more mature, side of my songwriting.

AM: What else do you want to share with Athleisure Mag in terms of upcoming projects?

KB: I'm really excited to hit the road with one of my favorite acts, Rascal Flatts, this summer. They are so good live and I can't wait to be a apart of it every night.

SPRING BEAUTY

February 25, 2016

Winter is not over by any means, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t prep our skin for our red carpet moments and spring which is around the corner. We took a moment with VERTERE® Skin Care Founder, Bethany Hilt on how you can boost the radiance of your skin within 48 - 72 hours! That means you could be ready for date night with your significant other, a night out with the girls and more with her collection and honed in tips.

STOP CONSUMING SUGAR AND EXCESS SALT

Bethany reminds us to, “avoid even the seemingly innocent sweeteners such as stevia and molasses. When using salt in cooking, use Pink Himalayan Salt”.

INCREASE YOUR WATER AND COCONUT WATER INTAKE

There are a number of options to stay hydrated outside of the classic water. Coconut water is also a great beverage to include. “Dehydration causes fine lines to appear prominent and creates a dullness. Hydrating from the inside will help counteract this,” she stated.

START USING A GENTLE DEEP CLEANSER

The creator of VERTERE® notes that their, “Refining Treatment Cleanser is a great choice because it visibly minimizes pores, plumps fine lines/wrinkles, brightens and clarifies - results are noticeable after the first use. The gentle deep cleaning action helps keep pores clean (which also helps pores look smaller and makeup look better) and the lactic acid eliminates flakiness and dryness so your skin looks gorgeous and supple.”

DAILY, APPLY DRAMATIC TRANSFORMATION CREAM SPF 18

Dramatic Transformation is a, “patented powerful blend of multiple peptides, a safe lightener/brightener, lactic acid and loads of non-pore-clogging oils gives an immediate dewiness to the skin, and skin’s texture and radiance will be noticeably improved.”

APPLY NON-COMEDOGENIC OILS ON TOP OF YOUR NIGHTLY TREATMENT

“Toss the old idea that the thinnest product is the one to apply first in this instance. Press a small amount of argan, baobab or jojoba oil onto your skin after you’ve applied your night treatment - especially if it’s a retinol or prescription retinoid. Skin will reap the maximum benefit from direct contact with the active while the oil will seal in moisture to create a beautiful glow.”

Let's Talk Nugg.jpg

Let's Talk Nugg

February 23, 2016

Whether it’s time for an at home spa day or you’re in need for serious TLC for your face, nügg is all about giving your face an array of options to keep it looking radiant! We took a moment to chat with Dr Conny Wittke, founder and creator of nügg to know more about why she created it and what makes it such a great item to have with you whether you’re at home or traveling.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What sets nügg Beauty apart from other beauty brands that focus on the face?

DR CONNY WITTKE: nügg is all about providing prestige quality skin care at affordable price point and we work very hard to always live up to that promise. We use unique blends of natural oils and extracts and small, portion-size pod packaging for six (soon seven) different face masks so that you can easily tailor to your changing skin concerns, product waste through unused product is avoided and you can also easily multi-mask. Also, we manufacture with an innovative Natural Oil Dispersion Technology that uses physics instead of chemistry to blend oil and water which avoids the use of chemical emulsifiers that can impair your natural skin barrier function. That is great for healthy skin
and also gives a very unique skin feel. Last but not least, all our masks are formulated with >90% natural or naturally derived ingredients and without petrochemicals, parabens, synthetic fragrances and synthetic colors.

AM: What are your 3 must haves within the collection that we can use to combat winter dryness?

DR CW: Our hydrating face mask is fantastic to combat winter dryness, as well as our soothing face mask if your skin is also sensitive. Our deep cleansing mask is also great as it provides a very gentle, oil-based cleanse that cleanses and hydrates at the same time but doesn’t strip skin of moisture. Our skin RX pack for dry/dehydrated skin gives dry winter skin a boost in just 4 days with a very easy-to-follow 4-day face mask regime.

AM: What are your favorite key ingredients that are within the line and are there fragrances that could make their way into the line?

DR CW: Our face masks are formulated with high quality blends of natural oils and extracts and each blend is tailored to very specific skin care concerns and objectives so they are all great for different reasons. Also, the base for our masks is aloe juice as opposed to water which makes them even more soothing and nourishing. We do not use any synthetic fragrances in our products so any odor comes from the natural oils used in the mask. E.g. our revitalizing face mask has a very fresh, minty smell due to the peppermint oil that is used in the formulation to give skin radiance and a dewy glow.

My personal favorite is our soothing face mask that is loaded with soothing chamomile extract, shea butter and bisabolol and hydrates and calms
the skin at the same time.

AM: At what point did you decide to create this line as it’s not only a great idea but is so great to use when you’re traveling?

DR CW: Before starting my own venture, I was the CEO of Tweezerman for many years. During that time, I traveled A LOT all over the world.
During that time, I noticed a big void in the market for truly high quality face masks that are super easy to integrate into your skin care regime
and also extremely travel-friendly. That’s how the pod-style packaging was born and also the name nügg which is short for “nüggets of goodness for your skin.” It literally all happened during a flight from Shanghai to New York after a whirlwind trip that left both me and my skin quite exhausted.

AM: Have their been celebrities that you know of that enjoy using it?

DR CW: We know that Whitney Port enjoys our face masks and are very proud of that!

AM: What products will be released in 2016?

DR CW: Yes, 2016 is full of innovation for us. Inventing fantastic new products is our favorite thing and in early 2016 we will expand into additional mask categories. With a de-stress face mask we are also launching an additional face mask “flavor” that is very timely to help the skin fight off the impact of stress and environmental damage.

AM: How do you juggle your time between business and friends/family?

DR CW: Honestly, that is probably the biggest challenge of an entrepreneur as there is always too much to do and you “live and breathe” the business always and everywhere. However, our office is just 5 minutes from our home and that gives me the flexibility to go back and forth easily and also the ability to spend time with my wonderful two children. I started the business together with my husband and one of us is always home when the children come off the school bus and we try to have dinner together as often as we can.

AM: How do you achieve balance and stay connected/present?

DR CW: I’m really lucky that I truly and thoroughly love what I do so that gives me a good base… I also try to walk whenever and wherever I can instead of driving, I eat (reasonably) healthy and when I get unbalanced I swim which is extremely good for me both physically and mentally. For vacation, we love to hike in the mountains or do paddle boarding and swimming in lakes upstate which is fantastic for achieving balance and being very connected to nature and the present.
