5 TIPS FOR A SUSTAINABLE LIFE

December 3, 2019

In this day and age, it is very important that we humans do as much as we can to keep our planet safe and healthy. Most people who are eco-friendly have started leading more sustainable lifestyles.

Leading such a lifestyle can be a difficult task, especially when you don't even know what the term truly means. It is not as simple as just switching a couple of things in your diet or changing your light bulbs, leading a completely sustainable life will take a lot more effort.

To lead such a life means that you live your life responsibly to ensure that future generations can lead a healthy life. It is a type of mindset that understands that the resources we have on this planet are not infinite.

There will come a day when we deplete some of the most important resources of our lives and we have to make sure that day is as far from today as possible.

1. What sustainable living looks like?

It is important to ensure that the message about sustainable lives is correctly spread.

To live such a life does not mean that we have to quit every single luxury of our lives and to give up on comfort, it simply means that we should start being wary of the things we throw away, on the number of resources and energy we consume every single day and how to reduce those expenditures.

The ability to renew the resources we use and to consciously understand the impact we do on the planet is crucial.

Here are some of the things you should be aware of if you want to lead a sustainable lifestyle.

2. Reduce your overall energy use

One of the biggest waste of energy on this planet comes from the unnecessary use of appliances, according to this website.

When you exit your kitchen make sure that everything you won't use anymore is turned off including all the lights. If you are leaving your home, there is no need for the television set to keep running as loud as possible.

You could also consider getting more energy-efficient appliances at home. Sure, it might be pretty expensive to replace your clothes washing machine, but with an energy-efficient one you will save up a lot of money over the years and you are also leading a more sustainable life.

The more energy you save, the better it is for the planet and the better it is for your electricity bill.

Another huge energy spender is the heating system in our homes. You can get a quality thermostat installed for just a couple of dollars that can properly regulate the temperature inside of your home.

A more modern thermostat can be adjusted to lower the temperature inside if you are not home and to raise it when you get home. You can also use an application to warm up your room just before you get home.

By properly managing the temperature at home, you are saving up a lot of energy.

Most people during the winter just crank up the thermostat to maximum and then walk around inside in shorts and shirts. Instead of spending so much energy to keep such a high temperature sustained inside of your home, you can just put on a few layers of clothes on yourself and lower the thermostat.

The same thing applies to hot summer days too. Why should your air condition unit spend so much power to make your room so cold that you have to wear additional clothing when you can just open up a window and take off a layer of your clothes?

You could also save up additional energy during the hot summer days by putting your clothes to dry out in the sun instead of in the dryer. Not only will you save some money by doing this, but your clothes will also smell more natural and will be softer to the touch.

If you cannot force yourself into the habit of constantly turning off the lights in your room, you could consider installing LED lights instead of incandescent light bulbs.

On Energy Focus you can read more about what makes this lights eco-friendly. Not only do LED lights shine brighter, but you can also pick the colors they light up in, they last longer and they spend 10 times less energy than regular bulbs.

So not only are you saving up on energy, you are making your life more comfortable.

3. Avoiding using unnecessary plastic

Plastic is one of the most polluting materials on the planet and we use it every single day. To avoid polluting our environment, you could start using paper or canvas bags next time you go to the market.

You can also avoid using regular plastic bottles since you can get a stainless steel water bottle that will last for years.

According to waterbottle.io, a stainless steel bottle can keep your drinks colder or hotter for much longer than plastic bottles.

4. Start drinking coffee at home

Instead of wasting time and money every single morning to get a cup of coffee before going to work, you should consider getting a coffee maker.

Coffee from most coffee shops is much more expensive and use plastic disposable cups that damage our environment.

Using a coffee maker at home is a much cheaper alternative and may even a tastier, as suggested by GiftWits. If you want to achieve the same taste as most coffee shops, we recommend you to get this book about brewing coffee, Brew: Better Coffee at Home.

5. Try growing your own food

You probably already know how much money you are spending every day on food, especially fresh vegetables or fruits. If you live alone or with a roommate, all those vegetables you buy probably end up rotting in your fridge after a while.

This is just a waste of money, so why not consider growing your own food?

Try planting a few seeds of tomatoes on your balcony or next to your window and see whether they will grow. Next time you feel like eating a tomato, you can easily pluck one off from your plant. Read more here about the environmental benefits of growing your own food.

HOW TO GET ALONG WITH YOUR MAID?

April 11, 2018

Hiring a maid is one thing, but keeping up with them is another story. You are paying them, but it doesn’t mean that they are an indentured servant. If you have had trouble in the past with this paid service, then we have a few important points you should look up. These three points will help you get along with your maid, and help her do a better job.

Is There Any Need for Prep Work?

There is a quote that sums it up, “Cleaning up for your maid.” It depends on what sort of cleaning you require and how generously you will pay for it. However, it is a good idea to de-clutter before the maid comes to help as a means to assist for a thorough sweep.

Take care of your clutter, or it will take the maid twice the time, and the time they spend picking up your stuff is the time you couldn’t invest in a cleaning. Therefore, notify yourself about half an hour before she comes, see what needs to be put in the bin, or back in its place. You need to put away fragile, and family heirlooms.

If you can’t get them out of sight, at least tell them to be more careful around it. Try to de-clutter your space, but don’t lose your confidence if someone side-eyes it. Maids don’t judge if your homes are dirty because they have probably seen worse.

What Do They Need to Know?

When you hire a Maid Service NYC, you need to let them know how things work around your home. If you prefer to use your own cleaning products, make sure they are out in plain sight. In case you are not picky, then at least you can call the company beforehand and see what supplies they use.

Remember, the maid is there to do the heavy lifting for you. Therefore they will bring everything but a vacuum cleaner and paper towel. Instead, these services prefer a Swiffer mop and wet cloth to wash floors. If you want, you can provide them with your very own mop.

If you need them to bring the vacuum or any other special cleaning equipment, let them know ahead of time. Get a step stool to help cleaners reach difficult heads, and give them a heads-up about any appliances or fixtures they should watch out for. Let them know if anything is broken so they can be careful with it.

Anything Else You Should Know?

If you really want to get along with your maid, then you should manage your expectations. Make your mind about how big, and dirty is your home so that you can book the right service with sufficient time. If you haven't cleaned your home in a while, then you may have a lot of clutter.

So think practically and let your maid take care of the clutter before they move up with sweeping and cleaning the rest of your home. Last but not least, check your service agreement to learn every important detail mentioned there.

DOING IT HER WAY WITH JOY MANGANO

April 5, 2018

When we think of women that are innovative and trailblazers, Joy Mangano is one of the people that come to mind. We're honored that she sat down with us to talk about her aha moment, her ability to create functional items that make your life easier, how she maintains a fresh perspective when she is working to continue to develop great products and the importance of being a mentor to share the wealth of inspiration.

ATHLEISURE MAG: For those who have not seen the movie where Jennifer Lawrence plays you OR those who are not familiar with you, can you tell us how you went from realizing the need for one great product that brought you to HSN, to where you have now generated a number of great products and assisted those who also have great concepts that fit within our lifestyle?

JOY MANGANO: As a single mother of three, I was looking for a way to make the daily chore of mopping easier. I didn’t know much about the world of product and business, but I felt like
most mothers and wives do, not having enough time to care of their families and homes, and I wanted to try to fix that. The Miracle Mop was born from that feeling, a feeling I never gave
up on, that I could help people like me. And that belief is what kept me going, to new products, to TV retail, to HSN, to where I am today.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Do you believe that all great products come out of the need to solve a problem?

JM: 100% yes. I’ve always wondered why the ordinary things in life need to remain ordinary, if they have a chance to be better. I guess I just don’t settle for accepting things the way they are,
I focus on the way they could be, and should be, in every aspect of life. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had dreams for new ways to design something better. More color, more style,
more function. I was always inspired by the world around me.

AM: At what point did you realize that expanding from the mop was necessary to build your empire and how many products do you say that you concept and then eventually bring to market?

JM: It’s funny, but stopping at the mop was never really an option in my mind. I saw, and still see an opportunity in everything. As a child, I was always searching for a way to improve everything I could get my hands on. And that’s still true today. I’ve always had ideas about products in my head; but the success of the Miracle Mop allowed me the courage and self-belief to bring so many of them to life.

AM: What would you say the ethos of the Joy brand is and how do you continue to come up with great ideas that really become adopted into our lifestyle quickly?

JM: I believe we’re all basically the same. We have the same needs, the same wants, the same challenges and troubles. So I’m always convinced that an idea will resonate, because it always comes from a need I have; a need my customers might have too! The process really starts and
grows from there.

AM MAR DOING IT HER WAY WITH JOY MANGANO-2.jpg

AM: As the Co-Founder/Style Director of Athleisure Mag, my first steamer whether I was styling projects or was going on air for HSN myself, I would bring My Little Steamer. This was my first steamer that I used for a number of years! What was the moment when you realized that you should create this as well as that it would be a great product to have in your assortment?

JM: I love that! I’m so happy to hear you love the My Little Steamer! It really is the little product that could. Like everyone in life, I just didn’t like the hassle and trouble with ironing. The big heavy board, the water spilling everywhere, the burning of your clothes and maybe even your fingers. I knew I wanted to create something light, easy and portable, unlike traditional irons, but also better. And we did it – in just minutes you can steam something and you’re out the door looking flawless. That immediate reaction is what makes it such a great product.

AM: How do you know that a product is not only a hit but is worthy of bearing your name or being a part of your empire?

JM: I believe in everything I put my name on, I create products that I personally have a need for, so if I like it and believe in it, then I know there’s a real chance that my customers will too.

AM: How important is giving back to those as a mentor and to direct them toward being strong and savvy business women?

JM: I believe in the American Dream because I’m living it! And I know, no matter who you are or where you’re from, if you are smart and brave and have a little luck, you can find your own success. But I also know that getting started can be very scary – there’s no roadmap, no
step-by-step guide that tells you how to make your dream a reality, especially in the world of bringing new ideas to life. That’s why I started my foundation, The Joy Mangano Foundation, as way to help women get started both in their personal and business lives by empowering them
and providing tools that they might not have access to.

AM: Closet organizing, home maintenance, travel clothing prep etc are some of the core pieces that are in your collection, what else should we keep on our radar for future appearances on HSN.

JM: I don’t want to spoil anything, but I have a few new products rolling out that I have been working on!

AM: What advice do you give women who are looking to bring that one idea to market in a mass way when they may not have the resources (financially, contacts etc) to do so - but they still believe that this is something that needs to be in the world?

JM: You must believe in yourself and your ideas in order for anyone else to believe them. It starts with you – no one else will push you forward. I’d also recommend they check out my foundation, which is partnered with Rising Tide Capital, a brilliant non-profit organization that, for the past 10 years has been working to empower many first-time entrepreneurs and single mothers to use their creativity and talents so they too can build businesses that transform their lives and the lives of those around them.

AM: What philanthropy/charities do you give your time to?

JM: I have the honor of being a part of the UN Women Champions for Innovation. I’m so proud to be a part of an amazing group of women who promote UN Women’s activities that support
women’s and girl’s opportunities in areas related to innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship. It’s important to raise awareness about the barriers that women and girls face in these industries and I’m so happy I can be a part of the change.

AM: You have 100s of inventions under your belt - what keeps you engaged in inventing and presenting new concepts?

JM: I try to have a fresh perspective waking up every day. I think it’s important no matter what you do, to take a step back and look at things in a different light. It keeps you engaged and
sometimes sparks thoughts and ideas which is how I keep inventing new concepts and products.

YELLOW IS A GO

May 15, 2017

Sometimes you have to give it up to get it back together - but how far would you go to make sense of your world and your place in it? Kim Dinan does that while adding goodwill into the world in her memoir, The Yellow Envelope. We took some time to chat with Kim to find out about her series of time traveling with her husband as a global nomad, those she met along the way, what she learned and how she has assessed her time post the journey that was covered in her book.

ATHLEISURE MAG: We enjoyed this memoir, do you still go on nomadic adventures? How does it feel to be home with a routine etc?

KIM DINAN: I have not had a nomadic adventure since my husband and I returned to the states in 2015. The adjustment back to a “traditional” life was fairly jarring and we had a few months where we felt like we couldn’t tell the ground from the sky. Since we’d sold everything before we left, we came home with nothing. We rented a house, but it was completely empty. We didn’t own a bed, a couch, a car or dishes. So initially there was this out-of-control feeling as we re-acquired all of this stuff we’d purposefully gotten rid of. Then my husband went back to a 9-5 job and that was a real shock to the system. I had my book and freelance work to focus on, but all in all it just took a while to find our feet again.

There were bright spots too, though. I longed for a routine and was happy to have one again. Toward the end of our trip all I wanted was an oven to bake bread in and dresser drawers to organize my clothes. The small things that I used to take for granted in everyday life became things that I really missed. To this day, if it’s raining outside and I’m inside, I thank the universe to have a roof over my head and warm water in the faucet. Those things weren’t guaranteed when we were traveling, and there are many people that do not have such luxuries. I just don’t take those conveniences for granted anymore.

For a long time we said that we’d never do a truly nomadic trip again because the adjustment back was so hard—but of course now we are plotting our next big adventure. Though when we hit the road next time we’re getting a storage unit!

AM: Are you still in touch with Michele and Glenn?

KD: Absolutely! Michele and Glenn still live in Oregon, and while we don’t live in Oregon anymore, we keep in touch via email and Facebook and of course we see them whenever we go back to the west coast. A few months after we returned to the states Michele took a six-month sabbatical and Glenn quit his job and they set out on their own trip around the world!

AM: Inspiration and being a role model when you may not realize it is a theme that we kept seeing in your book. Besides Michele and Glenn, who else inspired you on this trip?

KD:
I met so many inspiring people on our trip. I think the most inspiring thing was not one single person, but this realization that there are so many ways to live—and there’s no “right way.” In the U.S. there’s this belief that you should follow this very traditional and well-trodden path that’s like: high school, college (if you’re lucky), job, house, marriage, kids… you know it because everyone knows it. It’s just a part of who we are as Americans. There’s nothing wrong with it per se, it’s just not the only way.

It wasn’t until I set out into the world that I realized that there are people all over the world living in very different ways—and they were happy. Of course, I always knew this intellectually but to actually experience it was a whole new thing for me. There are people that have very little money, but are incredibly rich in community—their social fabric is so strong.

I met people that had traveled for years and were raising their kids on the open road. I met olive farmers and doctors and rickshaw drivers and holy men and women and what I realized was that, you know, we all need certain things to have a good life—clean water and air, food, access to a good education, community—but after that life can take so many shapes. You don’t have to do it the way everyone back home is doing it. You’re allowed to live life
in the way that makes you feel really alive, even if it doesn’t make sense to other people.

AM: You traveled for 2 years on this trip - what are 3 things you loved and 3 things you could have done without on the trip?

KD: We actually traveled for nearly 3 years! Not every country and experience made it into the book.

When I look back on the trip the 3 things I really loved was, first of all, the time. Every single day was wide open. I had the time to really look inward, to ask myself what I wanted out of life, to spend time mentally sorting through my life and truly getting to know myself. I feel so incredibly lucky that I had those years—they changed my life.

The second thing I really loved, and maybe this makes me sound a bit selfish, was that I didn’t worry about people. Since I wasn’t home and I didn’t have a phone I knew that I’d only hear about something if it was really important. I used to be the kind of person where, if the phone rang unexpectedly, I’d automatically think that something was wrong. I guess I’m a worrier by nature. But I stopped worrying because I was so far away from home and I couldn’t fix anything for anybody—and that feeling was incredibly freeing.

The third thing I loved was the food. Oh man, the food. Especially the Indian food—even the airplane food in India made me drool.

As far as the things I could have done without. Well, I really missed the people I loved. I missed being a daily part of people’s lives. You leave and the world keeps right on spinning and you realize that if you don’t show up for people they move on without you. I also could have done without the marriage tensions and problems that came to a head while traveling. But the thing is, I’m also grateful that I faced my deepest questions—about my marriage and myself—head on. It’s so easy to stuff uncomfortable thoughts and feelings down and ignore the truth and much, much harder to face it. No one wants to go through gut-wrenching times, but they’re necessary.

AM: What lessons that you learned on the trip do you still do to this day?

KD: One of the biggest things I learned on the trip was to let go. I stopped being a control freak. I used to think that I was just born that way but, nope, it’s a learned thing and it can be changed. Now I know that the only thing I can control is my reaction in any given situation. So I just roll with things now. It’s so much better not getting worked up about small things!

Because of the yellow envelope gift we were given, I also learned a lot about giving. I learned that giving will always be awkward and uncomfortable but that's no reason to avoid it. To this day I still give yellow envelopes away and I’ve even started something called The Yellow Envelope Project (find it on Facebook @yellowenvelopeproject) where I mail yellow envelopes to people around the globe and they use their envelope to perform an act of kindness.

AM: Prior to leaving on this trip, what are 3 things that you would have never done in your old life, but find yourself enjoying now?

KD: I used to be a planner, but now most of the time I just show up and figure things out when I get there. It leaves room for spontaneity and adventure.

I also used to be so guarded of my time, but now I’m more open. I make time for people—I almost always say yes to an invitation, whereas before I said no because my life was so scheduled and regimented.

I’m also just more curious about people and more trusting. I mean, I traveled the world for three years, relying on strangers the whole time, and time and time again people proved to me that humans are generally good and willing to help as long as you are open to receiving. That’s the thing; I wasn’t open to receiving things before. Now, I let people help me. And I do everything I can to help other people. We’re all in this thing together.

AM: What are your favorite mountains/hiking trails?

KD: Oh, there are so many!! First, I have to start in my own backyard because the United States has some of the most stunning natural beauty in the world. The National Parks are a national treasure—I could spend the rest of my life just exploring states like Utah, Colorado, Oregon and Washington.

I have a very soft spot in my heart for the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile pilgrimage route through Spain that I walked solo (though it didn't make it into the book - maybe another book!). The Camino de Santiago is a special experience, there’s nothing else like it on earth.

I also have to give a shout-out to Nepal. My husband and I walked the Annapurna Circuit. That was some of the hardest trekking of my life (we crested a 17,000-foot pass!) but also some of the most magical. It’s not just the mountains, which are amazing, but also the villages that you walk through. It’s a special part of the world and I can’t wait to go back.

AM: What places/countries have you yet to visit that are on your bucket list?

KD: Namibia, Tanzania, Iceland, New Zealand, Ireland, Bhutan, Tibet… should I go on?

AM: Are you still in touch with the women you met in India or those that were on the biking trip in Vietnam?

KD: Somewhat, yes. Thanks to the wonders of Facebook and Instagram I’m able to keep up to date with most of the people I met on my trip.

AM: There are many people/experiences that you share - is there a moment that didn't make it in that you or Brian were impacted by?

KD: I think of a thousand small moments that impacted us—people stopping to ask us if we needed directions when we looked lost, people that asked us curiously about our life back home, just small moments when others took the time out of their day to assist us in some way. I think in general we’re all so caught up in our own lives and moving so fast that we rarely take the time to look up and see how we can be of service. I try to pay more attention now to small ways that I can help.

AM: Culturally you walked in the shoes of others throughout your journey as you experienced various "culture shocks". Share 3 with us and why is traveling to places different than your own so important?

KD: Traveling is so important because it teaches you what it's like to be a foreigner. It’s hard to be the odd man out like that. It’s impossible to know what that feels like and not have more compassion and understanding for people having similar experiences in your own country. Traveling teaches you that your way is not the only way. You don’t have
to get on an airplane and fly halfway around the world to learn this lesson. If you live in the country, go to the city. If you live in the city, head to the country. Be open and curious—you’ll learn something.

As far as culture shock goes, I think the biggest culture shock came when we transitioned from western to eastern cultures. In western cultures, thinking is very linier and logical. In eastern cultures, it seems like there is more wiggle room. If you try to use logic to make sense of the way some things go down in places like India, you’ll go nuts. But if you can just learn to laugh and accept things as they are, you’ll be fine. That was my experience.

AM: What was your favorite country and/or city covered in the book?

KD: Well, when I look back on the trip I know that some of my feelings about certain places are clouded by my own personal journey. I was battling a lot of internal unrest in South America, so when I think back to some of those countries it's hard for me to separate my own unhappiness with my overall feelings about a place. On the other hand, I am in love with India. I loved the country, the people, the culture—but I also had a bit of an awakening in that country, so I’m sure the fact that I kind of came out the other side of things and found balance there is also part of the reason why I love that country so much. I’m almost afraid to go back because I love it in my memory just the way it is.

MOVING TIPS

May 29, 2016

There's never a good time to move, but there are tips to make this process as smooth as possible. Ross Saipr, CEO/Founder of Roadway Moving broke down some easy steps/tips for us to keep in mind so that we won't miss a thing and can make the process as seamless as possible!

AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

1. Book the Movers Early

As soon as you know that you are moving, it’s time to book the movers. It is worth hiring a moving company—as opposed to trying it all by yourself—as it will save you stress, potential injury, and could even save you money on moving materials, insurance, and any furniture that you may have damaged while attempting to move.

2. Open Up a "Moving File"

Whether it is an actual physical file of documents, a file saved to the cloud, or both, it is important to have on hand all of your important moving details. Open one up as soon as you know that you are moving, and add to it as things arise. Keep this file accessible—with you at all times—as you move, so that you can view any necessary documents when you need them.

3. Compile Research on Your New Area

You will need to know, and get in touch with, new doctors, school for your kids, dentists, vets if you have pets, grocery stores, and other essential amenities. Make sure that you transfer all important records to your new location.

IN THE MONTH BEFORE MOVING

1. Start Consolidating Your Possessions

It’s time for that clear out that you’ve been planning for months. Go through your house from room to room and get rid of things that you no longer use, wear, or that are not working anymore. If you need to ease your guilt over getting rid of things, try donating them instead of throwing them out, and you will feel like you are doing some good at the same time.

2. Collect and Buy Packing Materials

There are a lot of places that will provide you with cheap or free packing materials. For example, you can often get free boxes from grocery stores. Start collecting early, and then you can spread out the burden of packing over a few weeks—rather than doing it all the night before you move!

3. Measure Your New Place

Measure and record the size of your new place so that you know exactly how much space you have, and what will fit where. It will also help when you are directing the movers as to where they should put things.

4. Fill Out a Change of Address Form

This can take time, so make sure that you are on top of it, and you won’t lose any important mail.

5. Arrange Time Off From Work

You will probably need at least a day or two to get settled, so if you are planning on keeping your current job, make sure that you arrange some time off in advance.

6. Draft in Some Help

Real friends help friends move. It's not al-ways the most coveted job, but moving is something that most people will help out with — so the least you can do is give them some time to prepare.

MOVING DAY

1. Take an Overnight Bag

Once everything is moved, you are not going to want to try to rummage through all of your boxes in search of a set of clothes for the next day, or even pajamas to sleep in, so it helps if you have an overnight bag packed and with you.

2. Eat

Don’t forget to eat! You will only become more stressed and irritable if you are hungry while moving. Pick somewhere to eat out near your new house and take a well-earned break to rest and replenish.

3. Check Your New Place

Especially if you are renting, you will need to take inventory of the new place and make sure that there are no damages for which you will be blamed upon moving out. Take note of everything and take pictures if necessary. If you are not renting, this might be a good time to run through and clean anything that will be more difficult to get to once it is filled with furniture.

4. Do a Final Run Through

Before you leave your old residence for good, make sure you do a final, thorough run through to make sure that you haven’t left anything behind. Especially if you are renting, clean up after yourself and the movers.
