ATHLEISURE LIST | JEAN MICHEL-BASQUIAT KING PLEASURE

May 13, 2023

The Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure exhibit moved from here in NY to LA. We talked with Ileen Galllagher to find out more about this exhibit. There are close to 200 works including never before seen paintings, drawings, ephemera, and objects owned by Jean-Michel. This exhibit also includes immersive environments of his childhood home, studio, and Palladium nightclub.

This exhibit is possible due to his sisters who run the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat. In their possession are many works that have never been seen before, and they wanted to share them with the public. Additionally, they wanted to create an exhibition that told the story of their brother from their unique point of view.

He was known for his Neo-Expressionism and was very expressive in his use of color, imagery, and language. His work combines all three and often contains elements from history, art history, culture, and social and political commentary.

King Pleasure, the name of the exhibit, comes from a painting by the artists in 1987 referencing the name of a bebop-loving bartender turned jazz vocalist, whose first hit in 1952, Moody’s Mood For Love, catapulted him to fame. Frankie Crocker, a WBLS disc jockey played it at the close of his show every night in the early 1970s. Gerard, Jean-Michel’s father, liked the song and often listened to Crocker’s show. Jean-Michel created a painting by this name but it is not included in this exhibition.

It's important to note that his legacy has grown exponentially since the time of his passing and many in the art world who didn’t recognize his talent and genius during his lifetime have come around to truly appreciate his unique talent. His art resonates with all sorts of audiences because so many people can identify with what he is saying in his work, and his messages continue to resonate to this day. Since his death he has been included in hundreds of exhibitions and his fame is truly worldwide.

ATHLEISURE LIST | DÖNER HAUS

April 12, 2023

On March 20th, Döner Haus opened and introduced the East Village to their German-style Kebasb. The Döner kebab is a popular meat dish that originated in Turkey. In Germany, the Döner - as it's simply called there - came to life when Turkish immigrants in the 50s came to Germany and brought their cuisine along. Missing many classic Turkish ingredients for the kebab, they started using German ingredients such as cabbage, or even sauerkraut and other pickled vegetables. They also started catering to the German preference of having “crispy” food and offered the Kebab in a pressed Turkish flatbread, as opposed to serving it with rice. It's more like a sandwich, with all ingredients placed into a "triangle pouch" flat-bread and flavored with garlic sauce.

Other differences include the meat in Turkish-style Döner kebabs is usually lamb or a mixture of lamb and beef, while in German-style Döner kebabs, it is usually chicken, turkey, or just beef.

Turkish-style Döner kebabs are typically served with rice and vegetables, or in a soft, thin bread called lavash, while German-style Döner kebabs are usually served in a pressed crispy flatbread called pide.

German-style Döner kebabs may have cabbage, sauerkraut or other pickled vegetables as well as commonly used onions, tomatoes, and salad in Turkey.

Turkish-style Döner kebabs are typically served with Mediterranean sauces such as tzatziki or tahini sauce, while German-style Döner kebabs generally come with a special dill based garlic sauce.

You can select from Chicken, Beef, and soon Vegan for your protein. Notably all the meat from Döner Haus are 100% halal and 100% free of any fillers, which is uncommon for gyro in NYC.

If you're counting carbs, you can order their Döner Box without fries and you'll be able to enjoy an almost zero-card meal. Keep in mind that tomatoes have carbs, but the menu is customizable so you can leave something out or get anything extra.

When ordering, there is the Döner Kebab Sandwich, which is the classic German Döner experience featuring sliced rotisserie meat in a bread-pocket with garlic sauce, as well as the Döner Box, which is shaved meat over fries and salad with plenty of garlic sauce. There is also the Haus Fries, French fries with a secret German seasoning.

All city workers get 25% off, there is 20% off for students and if you come in after midnight you will get 20% off.

ATHLEISURE LIST | THE JUICY LOUNGE

March 19, 2023

When this juicery's partner always wanted to open a lounge and the other wanted a juice bar, The Juicy Lounge was born! The fact that in addition to juices, they wanted to have pastries, espresso and more - the name was perfect. They also want to be able to change the Juice and Smoothies concept.

This partnership wants to bring something different and healthy to the neighborhood. Its a new, unique concept that's been well-received by the community.

The space was designed by Peter Sibilia who curated a mid-century Italian meets modern aesthetic, with a seafoam green candy-striped floor that allows the millennial pink paneled half wall to pop. Above the paneling is hyper modern pink, gold, and white wallpaper of circles and their cut outs on one side, a white-washed brick wall with shelfing displaying pink books and rotary phone among other design elements on the opposite wall above the iconic Salvador Dali Mae West Lips Sofa. The juice bar itself is lined with hanging baskets, each with a different color fruit, adding a line of tropical tones to the space, accentuated by top-of-the-line juicing machines.

Three slow pressed juices that we suggest trying include: The Fennel Twist, made with fennel, celery, ginger, lemon, and apple; the Sweetox, with kale lemon, kiwi, ginger, orange, and apple; and Can't Beet It, with beets, carrots, cucumber, lemon, and apple.

Three juice shots that we enjoy are Top-G, with ginger, lemon, honey, and apple; the Wheat Baby, with wheatgrass, pineapple, and orange, and also the T-Shot, with turmeric, lemon, honey, and apple.

For your smoothies, this week, we suggest Sunny Tropical, orange, peach, carrot, and yogurt; Green Dream, mango with spinach, banana, and lemon; and Berry Banana, raspberries, strawberries, banana, chia seeds, and almond milk.

When you want to grab a bite, they offfer two açaí bowls for guests: The Juicy Lounge, açai with strawberries, blueberries, banana, coconut flakes, and granola; and Hollywood, açaí, mango, pineapple, banana, coconut flakes, and granola.

The açaí bowls, juices, and smoothie selections will be updated and vary based on seasonal produce and availability.

ATHLEISURE LIST | LA PULPERIA

March 18, 2023

La Pulperia opened in early April of 2021 and offers Latin American Cuisine that is simple yet refined with influences from Peru, Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil. There are also influences from Europe which includes places like Italy and Spain. It's named after the general stores found throughout South America.

La Pulperia, designed by Andres Gomez (Red Rooster, Whitehall, SoCo) mirrors the authentic pulperias of South America with a nautical theme that matches the restaurant’s seafood-leaning menu with hooks hanging from the ceiling. The interior is anchored by a large marble bar and lined with exposed brick. The back wall is overlapped with different shapes and sizes of framed mirrors to evoke a vintage rustic look. Floor to ceiling windows on the far side of the restaurant gives eaters a clear view of the streets.

La Pulperia's Executive Chef Miguel Molina suggests that we have the Tuna con Tomate, inspired from Spain with his personal touch of Seared Tuna. The Empanadas Mixtas: beef, cheese & corn, or crab meat and every single empanada is hand made with a unique folded edge to distinguish their filling. His Crispy Lobster Taquitos, made with main lobster, Japanese mayo, fresh vegetable salsa that has roasted pineapple, peppers, onions, salt and pepper, topped with avocado mousse, in a crispy wonton shell gives your taste buds the feeling of being by the sea.

For the raw bar, try Hamachi Tostada, his original one-of-a-kind appetizer that combines the delicacy of Peruvian-Asian influenced ingredients with the hamachi fish spread with the piquillo romesco topped with crispy leeks. Ceviche Mixto, is very fresh and contains a mix of seafood like white fish, shrimp, and fresh squid. He also recommends the Tuna Tartare because of its freshness, it’s a sushi grade tuna, the best tuna for any sushi. The carrot ginger leche de tigre sauce enhances the flavor of the tuna tartare giving it a sweet and sour tropical taste, to which we also top with crispy red quinoa.

For your entree, we suggest the Murray’s Roasted Half Chicken because it is made with a 24 hour marinate of orange capers sauce! The Moqueca Mixta is a fusion of Brazil, with the freshest seafood. We also like their Argentinian Parrillada, a family dinner served alongside with homemade roasted potatoes and market salad.

The beverage program is created by Daviel Villanueva. We suggest South American spirits like Pareero Old Fashioned, Del Callao and The Mean Julep.

We're keeping an eye out for NXT Room, an intimate space that will open for mixology classes, allowing you to bring your own guest bartender.

ATHLEISURE LIST | BODY SPACE FITNESS

January 22, 2023

Kelvin Gary is the founder of Body Space Fitness and is a former engineer, undergrad and a double engineering major and organic chem minor. He has an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business. While working corporate, he realized the negative impacts of sitting at a desk. This led him to training as a side hustle and the idea of BSF materialized.

He wanted to provide function training at a reasonable price. It was important to create a good, supportive, high-energy environment and culture to clients for a great experience.

BSF is a full-body function training facility that doesn’t focus on one tool or modality. They have a science-based system of training that incorporates multiple tools and modalities to build programming that help the client reach their goals.

With 14 coaches, all have a broad range of experience in different modalities. The coaches keep up with continuing education and learn all the tools necessary for the programming that takes place at BSF. Almost all of the coaches are pre/post-natal certified and one is also a boxing and MMA instructor.

Clients will participate in a strategy session where coaches get to know the client, learn about their goals, their starting point, training history, injuries and roadblocks. This information and assessment guides the needs of the clients training plan which includes exercise pregaming, recovery and nutrition if needed.

BSF uses the Inbody 570 which tells you how much muscle, bone and fat a client has. They can see this as it pertains to body fat and muscle by body part. It shows where gains and reduction needs to take place.

Clients participate in semi-private personal training in groups of 3 to work with one coach. Each client works their own customized program.

Group classes are pre-programmed with 16 people. Clients will supplement their customized training with group classes for additional workouts. Classes have a number of themes with some focused more on conditioning and some on strength.BODY SPACE FITNESS

ATHLEISURE LIST | PAVE

November 15, 2022

Chef Jonghun Won (Balthazar, Jungsik Restaurant, La Tabatiere) and Jin Ahn (Per Se, Jungsik Restaurant, Noreetuh) are co-founders of Pavé. Their friendship and passion for their craft brought them together to launch this European-style cafe/bakery which launched mid-September.

With a focus of The Art of Baking Bread for sweet and savory options, they are focused on showcasing one of the most basic necessities of life - bread. As a staple through human history from a culinary standpoint, it is featured in many ways. They felt there weren't enough places making bread right and they wanted to preserve the process before it becomes lost in the modern world.

Their fresh bread is made by Paneotrad which doesn't replace the human hand to create bread. It's an efficient tool to reduce square footage of production area; minimizing mistakes that can be made by human hands when it comes to bread-shaping and bread-cutting; be able to batch out smaller portions to bake more frequently without incurring too much waste!

We suggest 3 of their savory options: Jambon Beurre, combination of French style ham with high-quality butter on a baguette; Pan Bagnat is their take on salad niçoise on their fluffy olive ciabatta bread. Lastly, their focaccia bread which resembles a square pizza that is topped with cremini and oyster mushrooms, fingerling potatoes, gruyere cheese and thyme.

For your sweet treat, we suggest their pastries which are made in house while they work on their viennoiserie - brioche bread filled with passionfruit curd, green tea scones with chunks of white chocolate and their financier.

They offer specialty coffees sourced from Counter Culture Coffee, who is a specialty coffee roaster based in North Carolina. They also offer loose-leaf teas by Bellocq Tea Atelier, which is based out of Brooklyn.

When visiting, the Tiffany-blue door opens to a chic and clean interior and you can see the counter with their assortment. You'll see the antique display case with their pastries, and a clean glass display box featuring breads, sandwiches and focaccia.

As you walk down the line, you'll see the coffees from freshly ground beans will mix together with an open kitchen producing freshly baked bread. The space continues to the back where natural light fills the back room with spaced out tables that welcome you to a bit of an oasis in the Midtown desert.

ATHLEISURE LIST | RAS PLANT-BASED

November 14, 2022

We believe that we should have a plant-based diet at least 3 meals a week. Ras Plant Based has Ethiopian cuisine where people share a hands on experience that involves scooping up dollops of sauces or vegetables that are served on top of a spongy fermented flatbread called injera.

The Ras Vibe focuses on consistent great service, delicious foods, crafty beers and cocktails and a carefully curated playlist for their guests to enjoy. They want the dining experience to be memorable and they want their staff to have a warm environment to work in. Ras Plant Based is an organic plant-based, locally sourced, Kosher certified Ethiopian restaurant and a James Beard Semi Finalist for Best Chef in NY state.

The founders who are of Ethiopian descent wanted to stay true to their roots as they grew up Orthodox Christian and their parents fasted throughout the year cutting out meats and dairy products. When they opened in 2020, they were approached by a Rabbi who asked if they were interested in being kosher. They knew that this made sense and was a great way to ensure that more guests could enjoy their food.

For lunch, we suggest their bowls - the Bole Bowl is a favorite as it's spicy and flavorful. The Sambusas are another great option.

For brunch, French Toast, Ras Breakfast and a Lentil Burger is at the top of our list as well. For those that are vegan, their Ethiopian fusion options can be found in their "Kinda Not" section.

For dinner, we suggest that you have the Mercato, Mushroom Tibs and Ras Kitfo.

When it comes to cocktails, you should order Wet Ass Passionfruit, Fig Fig Bang Bang and Take it Easy. For mocktails, there are options but we hear that Days in the East is what you should get.

To complete your meal, 3 raw desserts that are on our mind are: Tiramisu, Coconut Leche and Pumpkin Pie.

ATHLEISURE LIST | BREATHWRK

October 21, 2022

Breathwork as a category is rooted in bonafide clinical science. Not only are breathing exercises proven to positively impact qualitative stuff like how you feel, they also improve biometrics like heart rate and blood pressure. Breathing exercises provide nearly instant relief, and with prescriptive combinations of inhales, exhales and holds, require no skill or experience.

For all these reasons, the team at health app Breathwrk believe their product is one of the most powerful solutions for the mass market. In the app, content is grouped into 4 core categories:

Night Time: Trouble shutting your mind off before bed can result from an overactive sympathetic nervous system, which controls your fight or flight response. Extended exhales raise your body’s relaxation center, the parasympathetic nervous system, to soothe overactivity and help you sleep faster.

Calm: Whenever someone tells you to "take a deep breath," the techniques in this category are what they’re referring to.

Perform: Executing a challenging breath hold at the end of your exhale increases your body’s red-blood-cell production for superior oxygen efficiency. The techniques in this category also support faster recovery by lowering your pulse after periods of intense exertion.

Energize: Short-burst inhales & exhales raise your body’s activity center to prime your nervous system for intense mental & physical effort, increasing heart rate, alertness and focus.

The free version of the app includes a small percentage of the exercise library, with their most popular breaths. For those interested in a deeper and more diverse Breathwrk practice, the competitively priced Pro version unlocks all content. There are a number of features that incentivize habitual usage. The most powerful is tracking against oneself, using features like Streaks to motivate consistency.

The company also extended into the real world with one of the first studios specializing in breathing exercises, building an even stronger community. At the studio, classes will help people wake up, strength train, sleep better and even achieve psychedelic-adjacent states.

If you would like to check out Breathwrk's app for a 7-day free trial, then click here to get 30% off Breathwrk Pro for 1 year, exclusive to Athleisure.

ATHLEISURE LIST | BEAR DONUT

September 18, 2022

We like knowing where we need to go for a pick me up and Bear Donut is one of those spots! A family business that opened in April 2022, Suhum Jang (owner of Michelin starred Hortus NYC) and Honey Kim founder of ARTIPS have grown up loving donuts. They wanted to create a shop that they believe created good donuts!

At the time when they were thinking about opening a donut shop, mochi donuts (donuts made with sweet rice flour) started to get popular in the US. However, the available flavors were all similar and mostly Asia-inspired. They wanted to create a new style by combining classic American donuts and mochi donuts with South Korean flair.

When you swing by, note that they make their donuts twice a day at 10am and 2pm to ensure their freshness.

We suggest that you should try their Coffee Toffee Glazed Donut, Pink Chocolate Glazed Donut and Dirty Choco Brioche Cream Filled Donut. Their full menu is filled with a number of options and their creative and pastry team work together to create new flavors and donut assortments. Offerings change season by season.

Bear Donut has savory options, including cheddar. They wanted to create a donut flavor that is unexpected, but still familiar to people which is what makes this a perfect ingredient. The sugar and cheddar powder makes a great sweet and savory combination.

In addition to their donuts, they also have signature drinks as well. We suggest: Specialty Iced Coffee in Dirty Matcha flavor (latte, milk soft serve, house-made matcha flavor), Specialty Iced Coffee in Mocha flavor (latte, milk soft serve, house-made chocolate flavor) and Bear Iced Coffee (cold brew with milk soft serve). They even have draft milk which is a flavored milk that is finished with milk foam.

An interesting ingredient that you will find in their donuts as well as their drinks is cheddar.

ATHLEISURE LIST | RANG NYC

September 17, 2022

Executive Chef/Owner Abishek Sharma (Madam Ji, Swagat and Badshah To-Go) introduced Rang NYC to the Long Island CIty dining scene with its restaurant and cocktail bar that opened this year. Born in Delhi and raised in the heart of Queens, NY, he trained as a sous chef under his father in New York City restaurants for over a decade. This new concept includes a creative menu that includes large and small botes that are full of flavor and are meant to be shared. His dishes reflect regional Indian flavors as well as creations that he has made throughout his career.

With the way the menu is broken down between Thoda Chota (small bites), Thoda Bada (large bites), from the Tandoor and Breads and Sides, we have some suggestions by Chef Abishek Sharma himself for the next time you swing by. For Thoda Chota: Chili Paneer/Chicken Bao Buns, Kerala Fried Chicken and Beetroot & Potato Tikki Chaat.

From Thoda Bada he suggests, Smokin' Salmon, Goat Aloo and the Biryani. From the Tandoor, he would get the Chettinad Chops, the Chipotle Paneer Tikka and the Mustard Chicken Tikka.

The Beverage Program features signature cocktails by Mixologist Pete Stanton. We know you'll enjoy: Rang-de-Basanti, the Bindi and Bangles and the Sari Not Sari.

Their wine program by Yash Shah of Baar Baar and Earthen is great for those that prefer to have one of these with their meal.

Murals by Kavi, an Indian visual artist whose work has been featured at events in Wynwood, Miami and New York Fashion Week, brings the interior together. The centerpiece is a white marble bar set atop vibrant turquoise glass mosaics. They wanted to promote South Indian artists in the restaurant which is why they picked Kavi. The mural by Kavi represents a blend of colors.

ATHLEISURE LIST | BEATNIC @ MONTAUK BEACH HOUSE

August 11, 2022

We talked with Catey Mark Meyers, President of Beatnic to find out more about this vegan chain of restaurants. Beatnic first opened in the Village in 2015 and is known for its vegan menu of classic favorites. Starting July 15th through Labor Day Weekend, they have partnered with Montauk Beach House to bring their faves as well as specialty treats to the Hamptons Monday - Saturday. Guests of the MBH will be able to enjoy their meals at the restaurant, bar and poolside.

The menu includes their Quinoa Taco Salad that's topped with pea protein chorizo, a black bean and quinoa mix, fresh avocado and tomatoes, tortilla strips and a tofu cream which is a favorite from their restaurant. We enjoyed their Buffalo Cauli Poppers. Exclusive to MBH is the MBH Lobster Roll made from Hearts of Palm and served on a vegan Pretzel Bun.

We found that there are a number of items that are vegan and vegetarian that can definitely tempt your tastebuds when hanging out by the pool. From salads, burgers, sandwiches and sides.

The menu also includes desserts that are classics of the eatery. They have a fresh baked Chocolate Cookie and Rainbow Sprinkle Cookies. The Cookies N Dream bar is also is a rich chocolate option.

Throughout the summer, the menu will have items changed up as well. They collaborated with the MBH team to understand what their guests are looking for and to design a menu that suits their needs. In addition, having dishes like the MBH Lobster Roll allows

them to take a classic to the area and to add a twist that brings in Beatnic's concept.

For those who hangout at the MBH with friends with diverse dietary needs, it's good to know that there is an option that will satisfy vegans, vegetarians or those that like to introduce plant-based options into their meals.

ATHLEISURE LIST | ATZORA BEACH

July 15, 2022

Atzaró Beach is open for the summer season. This A-list hotspot is great for an upscale beach lunch or dinner destination with fabulous sea views.

Chef James Adams has brought in a new concept which includes a focus on sharing plates, grilled options and utilizing ingredients that are grown on the grounds of the estate in their Vegetable Garden. The new menu has options that include wholesome, light and delicious meals that include seafood as well as organic fruit.

Meals can be enjoyed beachside on their daybeds or sofas. We suggest sitting back and enjoying bites with friends from tuna ceviche with mango, cucumber and lime, burrata with sourdough and pesto as well as watermelon salad with feta and mint.

For those who are hungrier, we like taking in some pasta, grilled lobster with garlic butter to order and 4 different kinds of paellas that are perfect to share.

When it comes to sweet treats, San Sebastian cheesecake with a raspberry compote, grilled pineapple with coconut ice cream and chilli or orujo panacotta with strawberries as well as homemade icre creams and sorbets - are great ways to complete your meals.

For those who enjoy spending their days on property, they will experience a boho style 70's aesthetic of Ibiza. It incorporates the environment it resides with natural woods, terracotta pots and local plants - cacti and palms! The properties' color palette has soft neutral sandstones with pops of color that compliment the beach and crystal clear waters of the sea beyond the eyes' vantage point.

The low-key atmosphere is perfect for lounging from day to night. From the chairs, sofas, swing seats and more - this is the way to take in perfect summers.

July 14, 2022

There are 2 foods that are always a must, bagels and pizza. At Bagel+Slice, there are a number of creations that take these bites to the next level. Founded by Brad Kent, a food science professional, he is focused on improving the quality of delicious food. Bagel+Slice is a concept where people can purchase reasonably prices bagels and pizza throughout the day in a neighborhood setting and focuses on sustainability, community involvement, health and safety.

Although they are not 100% organic, Bagel+Slice strives to be as organic as they can and is focused on Regenerative organic which means that by purchasing ingredients in this category, it contributes to the aim in the reversal of climate change. Regenerative organic farming has been listed as the most highly effective way to sequester carbon from the environment to reduce greenhouse gasses. These farming practices add to topsoil as opposed to eroding it which creates biodiversity and improved crop yields.

It is important to Bagel+Slice that they support the local community as well as family farms.

Those selecting bagels and/or pizzas will find that heritage seasonal regenerative wheat in each one. Bagels are rolled by hand, boiled and baked on burlap-lined bagel boards. Their hand-crafted pizzas use mindfully sourced ingredients with an array of flavors and textures.

With a choice between an organic and an organic gluten-free wheat bagel, we suggest an Egg Breakfast Sandwich (Keller Farms Bacon, organic egg, cheddar and jalapeño pistachio pesto), Goldilox (Kvaroy Arctic Lox, scallion cream cheese, red onion, dill, capers and lemon olive oil) or The Superfresh (Select cream cheese or vegan cream cheese that's nut-based, tomato, cucumber, red onion, dill and pistachio chimichurri).

For those looking for the perfect slice, we suggest Cheese (Red Sauce, mozzarella and Parmesan Reggiano), Vegan Vodka (Creamy tomato vodka sauce that's nut based, vegan cheese blend, mushroom fennel sausage and red onion) or Pizza Bagel (Red sauce, mozzarella, Parmesan Reggiano, extra virgin olive oil and you have the option to add pepperoni for an additional charge).

ATHLEISURE LIST | PAUSE STUDIO

June 12, 2022

With a belief that due to our hyperconnected world that life has no off button, Pause creates the space needed for the mind and body to reset. With its 3 studios in LA all of their services assist both mental and physical recovery including: stress and anxiety relief, mental clarity, promotes better sleep, detoxification, elevated immunity, and aids in athletic/physical recovery.

Pause Studios offers flotation therapy where clients are partially submerged in 10" of clean, body-temperature water, custom blended with 1,200lbs of therapeutic Epsom salts. It can help with lymph drainage and promote the absorption of magnesium.

They also offer infrared saunas which allow you to experience a more intense sweat at a lower temperature. You can stay for a longer period of time so that you can increase your core body temperature by 2 to 3 degrees. This triggers a fever-like state in the body, increasing white blood cell production, and can help to flush out toxins and free radicals in the body.

Cold-water therapy is also provided where guests can take a dip into cold water that is well below body temperature. This creates a rush of the blood to the body's core and constricts blood flow to the body's surface tissue. When the body is back to a heightened temperature, the blood vessels are able to dilate and push nutrient rich fresh oxygenated blood back through the body.

In addition, they offer whole body cryotherapy, IV drip and LED beds. They continue to add additional modalities to the services offered. They continue to look for services that are science backed, live with and enhance the efficacy of the offerings and pass the vetting of their founders, their peer group and their Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine.

With a clientele that includes Tessa Thompson, Jessica Alba, Dax Shepherd, Kate Beckinsale, Rob Gronkowski and Anderson Silva to name a few, we can see why taking that time for ourselves is essential. The importance of the philosophy of rest, recovery and regeneration is one that we're all embracing regardless of what our day to day lives entails.

ATHLEISURE LIST | [SOLIDCORE]

May 19, 2022

[solidcore] is a 50-minute, full-body strength-training workout that uses slow, controlled movements to break down the slow-twitch muscle fibers so that they build back stronger and leaner. Described as “pilates redefined,” [solidcore] differs from a traditional pilates class by bringing different levels of intensity and efficiency to the workout and the overall experience. With a focus on empowering [communities] and creating a space where everyone feels inspired, included, and seen, [solidcore] is on a mission to help people create the strongest version of themselves.

If you have yet to do this kind of workout, we suggest heading to the studio 15 minutes prior to class so that you can have a demo with your trainer, learn about safety information, get hands an assistance and even learn about modifications that you can use throughout the workout. Their classes are designed so that even in a group setting, you can get personalized interaction that will help you optimize your workout and experience.

You'll find that during the workout that this version of pilates is unique as they focus on results that overload and break down your muscle fibers and then giving them time to recover and adapt. By using rotating monthly muscles it prevents plateaus and creates balanced bodies. This method helps people build long, lean muscles that frames your physique and increases your metabolism.

We also like that after your class, you can still be connected with others who also enjoy working out at this studio by staying in touch via their social channels whether you're looking for encouragement, tips or chatting with those who are in your class.

Whether you're taking one class or are looking for the membership that works best for your location or your travel needs, you should visit their site to see the options as well as the studios that are available near you.

ATHLEISURE LIST | RAMEN MISOYA

May 18, 2022

When the first Ramen Misoya opened in the East Village in 2011, it was the first restaurant in New York City to serve exclusively Miso Ramen – no shoyu, shio or tonkotsu styles of ramen.

They wanted to bring Ramen Misoya to the West side as well. To serve authentic bowls of ramen you have to make ramen broth from scratch – no shortcuts so a large kitchen is needed. This location is spacious and has a large kitchen to accommodate their authentic approach to making ramen. It is located speakeasy-style underground in a landmark building with a small sign above the stairs. Once guests descend and enter the first set of doors, a bright orange door leads to the restaurant's main dining room just a few more steps down, the design is sleek and modern, with a light color palette, blond wood furniture and décor elements, and surprising 10-foot ceilings that make the space feel open and airy. The two dining rooms (seating 30 total) feature exposed brick and white walls, tiled floors and different types of seating - banquette, booth, table and counter seating perfect for solo diners. And there is a large window that allows diners to peek into the kitchen.

Kome, Shiro and Mame miso are the three miso types that we use at Ramen Misoya. Kome and Shiro miso are made of soybeans and rice, while Mame is 100% soybeans. Kome is a standard miso and most people are familiar with its salty taste. Shiro is produced in the Kyoto area and, compared to Kome, it is milder and a little sweeter. Mame is very unique for its rich texture and darker hue because of its pure soybean paste.

We suggest the Hokkaido-style Kome Miso Cha-Shu Ramen which is a rich tasting pork-chicken broth with slices of miso-marinated and braised pork (cha-shu), ground pork, bean sprouts, scallions, corn, menma (bamboo shoot), and miso egg.

Shiro Miso Spicy Ramen is made with white, less salty miso in a Kyoto style, with ground pork, bean sprouts, scallion, fried tofu, menma and miso egg.

Konayuki Ramen, a kome miso broth with parmesan cheese and butter - all of them come with the usual ramen toppings just like the classics. Vegetarian ramen broth made with mushroom and seaweed is also available, offering meatless options of all the classic ramens.

You can enjoy sake by Chiyomusubi Sake Brewery, which was founded in 1865 in the prefecture of Tottori in Japan’s Honshu. The labels feature distinctive illustrations by Shigeru Mizuki, the famous Japanese manga artist and creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro manga series. Each sake is made with different rice, creating different flavor profiles that pair well with their ramen.

ATHLEISURE LIST | LORELEY BEER GARDEN

April 9, 2022

We love a beer garden which originated in Bavaria and is an outdoor space with large picnic and communal tables where you can soak up the sun and enjoy cold beer and food. Loreley Beer Garden is in the LES and has a seasonal rotational floral installation and opened in 2003. It's open year-round and is heated in the winter and is a great place to hang out with friends in the summer.

Although you can enjoy an array of beers, Loreley also focuses on having a high quality food and beverage program. All their German imported beers have hundreds of years of tradition and perfection in their craft. They hand select every beer and only rotate 3 drafts each season. They sample over 30 new beers before selecting one draft line for one season. When it runs out, it's done for the season. They also work with local breweries on a series of collaborations of seasonal beers to fit their program.

This spring they will launch their first collaboration with Brooklyn's KCBC and brew their own Kölsch Style Ale which will be available here and at KCBC Brewer in Bushwick on draft and in cans. Also keep your eyes peeled at your local bodega in NYC. You can also enjoy Radeberger Pilsner which is available year around as well. Another beer to try is Köstritzer Schwarzbier, a dark lager - with a hint of chocolate.

In addition to beer, that have a high quality wine list and an array of seasonally rotating craft cocktails. We suggest the Nitro Cold Brew, Bourbon Sweet Tea, Frosé and if there is a chill in the air, the Bourbon Hot Chocolate is always a must-have!

In addition to German-inspired foods that features doughy soft-baked pretzels and authentic German sausages, there are other dishes on the menu. You can enjoy tacos, guacamole made fresh to order, a 1/2 lb burger with roasted tomatoes, sauteed onions, gouda on a pretzel bun, plus seasonal salads, cedar grilled salmon, portobello sandwiches and Beyond burgers. Their Brunch menu is something special with fresh Baked Cinnamon Rolls

to order, Fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes with fresh strawberries and whipped

cream, Eggs Benedict on homemade potato pancakes, Schnitzel & Eggs, to name a few.

As we make plans to hang out with our friends, coworkers and family, they have a few events that we can keep an eye out for. Loreley Beer Garden will host the Spring Beer & Cocktail Festival with a spring floral installation, seasonal beers and spring cocktails. In May and June, they will host the NYC Summer Rosé Festival which features Rosé everything! This will include 10 hand-selected rosé wines by the glass and bottle, rosé on draft, rosé cider, rosé cocktails, and most importantly, their famous Frosé!
