ARE YOU STRESSED OUT?? WHY STRESS IS A BEAUTY BUSTER

July 22, 2018

Stress - We all have it but some of us deal with it better tan others. If you look at any recent United States President from their first day in office until their last, you will see that all aged appreciably in only four years. Why? Because carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders took its toll on their appearance. Even if you're just an everyday lady boss or Mom trying to make her way in the world, stress can cause you to age before your time. Here's how and why according to New York Neuropsychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez.

Dr. Hafeez says that, "Aside from the unattractive scowl that stress brings to the face, it creates direct physiological changes. Stress is defines as the reaction of the body to a stressor or stimulus that causes stress. Stress can be acute, which affects the body in the short term, or chronic, affecting te body in the long term. Synonyms for stress include anxiety, nervousness, apprehensiveness, impatience, fear and restlessness."

Dr. Hafeez explains that, "Stress that is not controlled most certainly affects the body's physical characteristics or beauty. It affects skin, hair, fingernails, digestion and sleep patterns. Stress-induced conditions include hair loss, heart disease, obesity, obsessive-compulsive disorder, sexual dysfunction, tooth and gum disease and ulcers or indigestion."

Some Common Symptoms of Stress Induced Beauty Busters

Under-Eye Bags: Tomorrow's to-do list can weigh on your mind, keeping you from getting enough beauty sleep. This can cause fluid to pool below your lower eyelid area, and what you end up with is a puffy mess in the a.m. Stomach sleepers, bad news: You can expect the puffiness of your under-eye bags to be even worse because of gravity.

Flushed Face: "When you're stressed, you breather in short, shallow breaths and can even find yourself holding your breath for periods of time, which can lead to flushing and redness," says Dr. Hafeez.

Hair Loss: Stress can trigger alopecia areata, which causes patches of baldness anywhere on the body, including on your head. Stress can also trigger a tick where you pick at head hairs out of bad habit. This condition is called trichotillomania. Usually, this hair can grow back, but it doesn't even have to fall out in the first place. Pay close attention to your own habitural responses to daily stress, to avoid sparseness.

Gray Hair: Hair can also age prematurely due to stress, If you are genetically predisposed to have premature gray hair, stress will further decrease your production of melanin, easily increasing the number of gray or white hairs. By increasing your consumption of biotin, protein, and vitamin E you can reduce these negative effects to keep your hair strong and youthful.

Pimples: Stress alters your hormones. It increases cortisol production, which in turn increases the oil production in your skin. All of this leads to greater odds of clogged pores. Stress can also multiply the number of acne-causing bacteria in the body, which might require a high-dose antibiotic prescription from your dermatologist.

Mini Menopause: Dr. Hafeez says this isn't proven, but some believe increased levels of stress hormone cortisol can cause a dip in estrogen that's similar to the decrease during menopause. Less estrogen means less collagen production which can leave your skin dull and dry.

Wrinkles: Anxiety, crying, feeling down and a lack of sleep can cause deeper lines around the eyes, forehead, eye area and mouth.

Dark Circles: Stress can break the fragile capillaries under your eyes, leaving you with under-eye rings and a tired appearance.

Lines on the Fingernails: The appearance of vertical lines on your fingernails is fairly common and is related to both the natural aging process and nutritional deficiencies. But when they extend from the cuticle to the tip of the nail, it's a clear sign that your stress is having an effect on the body.

Stress and Weight Gain: Most of us become overeaters when we're feeling a lot of pressure. This happens thanks to your fight-or-flight response, a.k.a. survival mode -- once your body reaches a certain stress level, it does what it feels it needs to. In most cases, that means overeat. Why? Because your body thinks you've used calories to deal with your stress, even though you haven't, says Dr. Hafeez. She adds, "As a result, it thinks you need to replenish those calories, even though you don't. Levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, rise during tension-filled times. This can turn your overeating into a habit. Because increased levels of the hormone also help cause higher insulin levels, your blood sugar drops and you crave sugary, fatty foods.

How Can We Mitigate Stress?

Countless books and articles have been written about dealing with stress. Dr. Hafeez explains that, "The first step is recognition. To help deal with your stress, write down a list of what you are most worried about before any event, or what chronically causes worry in your life. Identifying your stressors is the first step in managing them. If you are chronically late or find that it is hard to get organized, figure out what you do that makes you late or disorganized. Write it down and acknowledge it. Then you can come up with a plan to preemptively tackle what may drive you and your loved ones into a stresed-out situation. Another trick in dealing with stress is plain old reasoning and the realization that you cannot control everything. Sometimes we trap ourselves into worrying about things that we have no control over, and recognition of that fact can reduce stress immeasurably.

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | THE 411 ON READING ETHICAL BEAUTY LABELS

July 19, 2018

Choosing beauty products is tricky enough without having to translate all the ingredients and scientific lingo on product labels. But knowing what we put on our bodies (hello, rose gold highlighter) is just as important as knowing what we put in them, so we recruited beauty expert, founder and CEO of Gabriel Cosmetics, Inc. Gabriel De Santino to school us on some label-reading basics.

When it comes to understanding beauty ingredient labels, knowledge is definitely power. Even though it takes up your precious time to learn how to decipher everything that’s listed on your favorite product, in the end your skin (and your body!) will be better for it. Not only will you be able to confirm that the product you’re using is free of harmful add-ins, but you’ll also be able to better understand how it stacks up to others on the market. Plus, you’ll be certain that you’re choosing earth conscious and ethical items—how extra woke of you.

Want to ensure that the products you’re spending your hard-earned cash on are cruelty-free and made with clean ingredients? When perusing the aisles of your favorite store, the easiest way to spot a cruelty-free brand is through one of three certifications that appear right on the packaging—Leaping Bunny, PETA’s cruelty-free logo, and the Choose Cruelty-Free logo.

Familiarize yourself with these symbols and it will make shopping a breeze. If you’re filling up your cart online with time to kill, take a few minutes to check out each of the certification sites mentioned above for a list of cruelty-free brands so you can purchase from companies with like-minded val ues that you can trust. And always remember—if you see an ingredient listed that you can’t pronounce, Google it! Sometimes a complex-sounding word is a totally harmless additive, and sometimes it's as dirty as dirty gets.

Other tips to keep in mind: the higher up on the ingredient list something is = the higher the concentration, paraben-free is always the way to be, and the term “fragrance” can be used to mask unclean ingredients so be wary of brands that use it.

It’s also important to note that just because a product is formulated vegan that doesn’t mean it’s cruelty-free and vice versa. Vegan beauty products are made without animal ingredients or by-products, while cruelty-free refers to products and ingredients that aren't tested on animals --- however, this doesn't necessarily means the products are vegan. Why choose makeup and skincare (like our own Gabriel Cosmetics) that's vegan and cruelty-free? The answer is simple—they advocate healthy living and sustainable practices for both you and the environment.

Congratulations, you’re now significantly more label-savvy and well on the way to living a cleaner and greener life.

Gabriel De Santino is the founder and CEO of Gabriel Cosmetics, Inc., a global  natural beauty empire starting in 1992, whose brands include Gabriel, Clean Kids Naturally and ZuZu Luxe.

Gabriel Cosmetic's Inc.'s prestige and diverse brand portfolio was created out of one man's vision of clearly defining natural beauty and being able to provide affordable and accessible vegan beauty products to consumers worldwide. Gabriel Cosmetics Inc. stared with a vision of natural beauty and has evolved with the philosophy of sustainable individual natural beauty while continuing to advocate healthy living.

AM JUN HAIR INFLUENCE WITH JEN ATKIN.jpg

HAIR INFLUENCE WITH JEN ATKIN

July 6, 2018

Known as "The Most Influential Hairstylist in the World," via New York Times, Jen Atkin has styled the tresses and has the most loyal clientele of some of the influential people including Kourtney Kardashian, Katy Perry, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lopez, Chrissy Teigen, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid. In addition to being a Celebrity Hairstylist, she launched OUAI haircare line in 2016, a range of Beauty Works hair extensions, her line of Chloe + Isabel hair accessories and works closely with Dyson to bring their innovative Supersonic blowdryer to market.

With a passion to unite the hair industry and to create a community for hairstylists, she created ManeAddicts.com  in 2014 and provides access to top hairstylists as well as featuring products and instructional videos. Due to its success, she expanded to Mane University, a global education resource that brings top stylists to major cities around the world to inspire hairdressers.

We took a moment to chat with Jen about her career, her favorite summer hair looks as well as a new pop, OUAISPACE that is being held at Gurney's in Montauk.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What was the ah ha moment that drew you to being a hairstylist? Tell us what your journey has been as you have built your name in the industry to being one of the most sought after hairstylists?

JEN ATKIN: I’ve always loved doing hair and was obsessed with Natalie Imbruglia’s short haircut in her ’Torn’ music video when I was a teenager in Utah. No one could give me the cut I wanted, so I went to the store, bought a pack of shaving razors, and started cutting my own hair. Soon I was cutting all my friends’ hair in my parent’s garage. After high school, I drove to California with literally only $300 and my Honda Civic hatchback. I called al the salons in Allure's beauty directory until finally someone returned my call and I started working as a receptionist at Estilo Salon in Beverly Hills. I remember running out to feed meters for Bette Midler and I was so excited and thought “I could move back home that was enough for me” lol.

I’ve just really worked hard and tried to be an honest good person.  I’m so lucky I’ve had such support from my clients and friends.

AM: In 2016, you created OUAI - why did you want to add a haircare line to your ecosystem?

JA: It felt very odd to me that there were a lot of men in boardrooms making decisions about what women want for our hair. I wanted to create the first product line a community helped create, promoting a realistic lifestyle that feels inclusive. It was important for me to have a group of women talking to other women about their haircare needs.  I think that more brands are trying to empower women. I want to change the conversation in business and beauty! I wanted to stop making the conversation only about women being pretty and start celebrating the spirit and power of being a woman in business.

AM: Why and how did the partnership between Gurney's Resorts come about?

JA: We’ve had pop-ups in NY & LA before so it only felt natural to partner w/ Gurney’s in Montauk.

AM: Will there be future integrations of OUAISPACE of this nature like this and if so why did you start at Gurney's first?

JA: Yes! The look and feel of Gurney’s is so relaxing and just feels easy. Which goes hand-in-hand with what OUAI’s aesthetic is.

AM: With summer hair dreams in our minds what are 3 products that are a must to give you perfect beach hair?

JA: OUAI Rose Hair & Body Oil – Rosehip Oil reduces the appearances of scars and redness and is known to lock in moisture, so it’s great for both skin and hair.

OUAI Sun of a Beach Ombré Spray – In the summer people want to spend more time outdoors and less time sitting at their salon. There are new trending ingredients (like the coconut water in our Sun of a Beach) that help keep hair hydrated and give this fun throwback product a modern update.

OUAI Wave Spray – Give your hair natural wave & body without the crunchiness and it’s made with rice protein instead of salt so it won’t dry out your hair.

Christophe Robin Prickly Pear Balm - This is a non-sticky, multipurpose balm infused with all butter and oils to nourish the hair and skin so you can use it all over. Rub some together in your hands and rub it on your ends for a more textured look. To tame frizz, rub a little on your hair and smooth down those flyaway. And for curls, it can be used to redefine and add shine/hold.

AM: What are your favorite products from your line?

JA: My favorites would definitely be the OUAI Treatment Masque because I love the individual packettes that are perfect for throwing in my purse or gym bag and doing a treatment while I work out. I’m also obsessed with the OUAI Dry Shampoo Foam because it’s unlike any other hair products on the market. You can extend between washes 3-4 days. It’s dry shampoo on steroids. You need it in your purse, your gym bag and your hair right now.

AM: What classic updo hairstyle do you suggest should become our go to look this summer? Let us know how we can achieve it and what products we need to have on hand to make it happen.

JA: I suggest the Textured High Pony

1. Pull hair in back into half pony

2. Add the rest of hair and secure with  an elastic at the crown of the head

3. Use OUAI Dry Texture Foam to pony for added volume and fullness

4. Finish with a toothbrush and OUAI Medium Hair Spray to smooth flyaways

AM: When you're not working, where do you go for a cocktails and a great meal, where do you work out and where can we find you shopping?

JA: I love Jon & Vinny's, Alfred Coffee, Barneys New York, Soho House Malibu.

5 SUMMER TIPS TO HEALTHY GLOWING SKIN

June 27, 2018

Your skin should be your top priority and Celebrity Makeup Artist, Claire Doyle shares her top 5 Summer tips to healthy glowing skin! Keep in mind that a number of SPF products that we use are actually toxic and dehydrating to skin and lips.

1.  Cool your skin after a day of fun in the sun with a cool shower or bath to take down inflammation, remove salt water and the toxic chemicals that come with most SPF sunscreens.

2.  An aloe vera based after sun body gel is great for cooling the skin and taking out the sting of over exposured skin. A fresh aloe vera plant also does the trick!

3.  Drink up!  Keep your body hydrated from the inside out with lots of water to offset those poolside cocktails.  I like to flavor my water with fresh fruit and mint leaves in the warmer months.

4. Keep your body hydrated with a great moisturizer and reapply often to sooth skin and prevent peeling.

5.  Don't forget about your lips!  Apply a moisturizing lip balm to keep lips hydrated post fun in the sun.  I love argan oil-based Moroccan Magic. It feels instantly moisturizing and doesn't feel waxy on the lips. Most people don't realize how de-hydrating SPF skincare and lip care can be. Make sure you apply a heavier layer before bedtime for overnight protection and renewal!

ATHLEISURE LIST | SAHRA SPA + HAMMAM AT THE COSMOPOLITAN LAS VEGAS

June 11, 2018

When visiting Sahra Spa & Hammam at the Cosmopolitan Hotel Las Vegas, we suggest the Oxygen Radiance Facial. This treatment is a partnership with Intraceuticals products and patented technology. Intraceuticals is a professional cosmetic skin care brand founded and formulated in Australia. The Oxygen Radiance Facial is based on the concept of delivering hyaluronic acid and custom anti-aging ingredients deep into the skin’s structural layer through high pressure therapeutic tic grade hyperbaric oxygen. The supporting line of revolutionary skincare products was designed to combat free radical attack, supply essential vitamins and ultimately restore elasticity to the skin.

This facial launched in 2014, followed by the Signature Decadent. Youth. Glow. facial in 2015 which fuses three of the industries most coveted technologies - HydraFacial, Intraceuticals and NuFace Microcurrent- into one innovative treatment.

In addition, there are a number of luxury facials and massages to traditional Hammam treatments. The treatments are designed to treat a variety of ailments, such as dehydration and dry skin, as well as invoke an overall sense of mental wellness among guests. Sahra Spa & Hammam also offers complete Sahra Transformations, designed to treat the entire being rather
than one isolated issue.

The 43,000 square-foot spa boasts 16 massage rooms, including four body treatment rooms with private steam showers as well as two hydrotherapy rooms. For guests looking for a complete spa getaway, there is the luxurious penthouse spa suite, complete with plush seating, a steam room, complete spa services and dining room service.

Inspired by the desert’s striking contrasts, exhilarating intensity and ageless tranquility, the spa atmosphere encourages the sensations of awakening and utter peace. Unique products and therapies draw from the richness of the desert – its minerals and plants, light and colors. Special treatments, such as Turkish hammam baths and Arabian beauty rituals, evoke desert
cultures from around the world.

To combat physical signs of jetlag, Spa Director Shannon Stringert, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, recommends combining the LED Light Therapy skin care enhancement with the Oxygen
Radiance Facial. This combination is great for all skin types and helps calm sensitive, dry and stressed skin, which is often a side effect of air travel, while providing instant hydration and lift.

ATHLEISURE LIST | PENELOPE & THE BEAUTY BAR

June 10, 2018

Angela Rosen opened the doors of Seattle’s renowned Penelope & The Beauty Bar 10 years ago. Located inside the historic Fairmont Olympic Hotel in the heart of downtown, Penelope & The Beauty Bar quickly became Seattle’s most in demand day spa. In 2016, Angela brought the leading services from Penelope & The Beauty Bar to a new market, creating the ultimate destination for customized skin care in downtown Manhattan with DAPHNE Studio. The team’s specialty is blending the philosophy and techniques of European skin care with the most up-to-date technology on the market. Most notably, the traditional Sugaring is a very unique service not offered by most waxing and sugaring locations in NYC.

Both spas carry premier French skincare brand Biologique Recherche and feature highly clinical and customized, results-driven facial and body treatments, including body wraps and body polishes, for both men and women. All of the spa’s estheticians are carefully selected and European-trained, bringing years of experience to its clientele.

The spa treatments include European facials and non-surgical face-lifts, utilizing the best micro-current machines in the industry. Our French contouring + detoxifying wrap and body
scrubs, along with the body-toning ion magnum can help with improvement in skin texture and weight loss. Their range of bodywork consists of several massage modalities, such as prenatal
massage and cranial sacral therapy. Grooming services include hair and makeup, as well as eyelash extensions, waxing, sugaring, and nails. In addition, we offer infrared sauna and collagen bed treatments. They carry exclusive, top-of-the-line products brought to Penelope & the beauty bar directly from Europe.

Nearly 40 years ago, when the laboratory Biologique Recherche was created, Yvan and Josette Allouche, a biologist and a physiotherapist, combined their expertise and passion to chart their unique and visionary course on the cosmetic care market. The company was then operating as a research and development unit, the sole purpose of which was to create care treatments and formulate products designed for professionals disappointed with those that already existed.

AM MAY-46.jpg

Nowadays, the combination of a clinical approach to personalized cosmetic treatment, pure, concentrated, almost raw products, complex formulas and original and rigorous treatments is the foundation of the reputation for efficacy of Biologique Recherche's Methodology. Biologique Recherche personalized treatments are now available in more than 70 countries in cosmetic and medical strongholds which exclusively distribute the brand's treatment methods and products.

The spa's infrared Pod involves redlight therapy penetrates seven inches deep to burn an average of 1,500 – 3,000 calories at once, detox the body, improve lymphatic circulation,
reduce stress and fatigue, strengthen and support a healthy immune system, increase cardiovascular conditioning, and improve skin by cleansing pores. The pod is also lined with Jade stone which has healing properties. The treatment is $75 for one session and $150 for three.

TALKING SKINCARE WITH DR. PAUL NASSIF

June 7, 2018

We have been a fan of Dr. Paul Nassif since we first started seeing him on BRAVO's Real Housewives of Beverly Hills where he introduced us to his world of Plastic Surgery as well as being a skin care expert. Whether we've seen him on a number of talk shows or on his addictive series on E! Botched with Dr. Terry Dubrow, that focuses on clients who are looking to have their visions become a reality after attempting surgeries that were not done appropriately.

Dr. Nassif created a skin care line that we wanted to know more about and are ecited to find out more about how this can go within your beauty routine to ensure that you keep that dewy glow that we're all looking to maintain.

ATHLEISURE MAG: For our readers that may not be familiar with you, can you tell us a little bit about who you are, and how you became a Celebrity Plastic Surgeon and Skin-care Expert?

DR. PAUL NASSIF: I’ve been practicing as a world-renowned facial plastic surgeon for over 20 years, and I’ve been working on my skincare line, Bio-Clock Dermaceuticals, for over 5 years. I juggle surgery 5 days a week, filming the E! TV show, Botched, and traveling to appearances on HSN and TVSN (Australia) frequently throughout the year.

AM: When did you realize that you wanted to create a skincare line?

DR. PN: After years of performing facial plastic surgery, I knew that I wanted to create a line of products that could help not only reverse the signs of aging, but most importantly, prevent them.

AM: What is in the current collection of your line and what does it do for the skin?

DR. PN: Bio-Clock Dermaceuticals was born out of a desire to change the skin from the inside out. These products are full of actives that address common issues, such as dehydrated skin, and reverse signs of aging.

AM: It seems that these products take care of the issues that many are concerned about from lines, under eyes as well as the neck - are there other skin concerns that you will tackle with future products?

DR. PN: We are working on adding a product with SPF to our line. I often see patients with major sun damage, which is hard to reverse. It’s very important to take the steps necessary to prevent sun damage.

AM: As people go from their 20's, to 30's, 40's and 50s what are preventative measures that users of your products can do to ensure that they are maintaining a beauty routine that makes their skin look supple and radiate a glow?

DR. PN: I always tell people to ensure that their routine contains an exfoliant, a super-hydrating serum, and an under eye cream that reduces dark circles and fine lines.

AM: How important is hydration to the body and does the skin take in moisture differently as it ages?

DR. PN: As you age, your skin requires more hydration to counteract the natural occurrence of fine lines and wrinkles. Using products that contain Hyaluronic Acid, such as my Hydro-Screen Serum, is the key to hydrating your skin and reducing those pesky wrinkles, ensuring that your skin is smooth for years to come.

AM MAY THE CONDITION OF CONDITIONING-1.jpg

THE CONDITION OF CONDITIONING

May 29, 2018

Conditioners can impact how our hair holds a style as well as its overall health and appearance. With so many feeling confused by the options of this product, do you leave it in or rinse it out, and which kinds are best to use? We connected again with Maya Smith to answer these questions. She is an International Master of Natural Curls and founder of The Doux®, a haircare line created specifically for naturally curly hair which includes The Fresh Rinse® conditioner.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What are the benefits of a conditioner?

MAYA SMITH: Conditioners help protect the hair from dryness and breakage by coating the hair shaft to help it retain moisture and softness. People tend to use it mainly for the added benefit of detangling hair however, it’s important to choose a conditioner that won’t weigh your hair down.

AM: What are the benefits of a rinse?

MS: A rinse, unlike a conditioner, does not coat the cuticle of the hair. A rinse has a much thinner consistency and is in actuality a detangler.

AM: Do I use a leave-in conditioner or a conditioning rinse?

MS: You can use both if your hair is dry, course, or color treated, however, fine hair or hair that tends to be porous should stick to conditioner only.

AM: Should everyone with curly or kinky hair use a conditioner?

MS: Yes. Conditioners help maintain the hair’s elasticity, or its ability to stretch and expand without breaking, which is essential for curly hair.

AM: Do I use a leave-in conditioner or a conditioning rinse?

MS: You can use both if your hair is dry, course, or color treated, however, fine hair or hair that tends to be porous should stick to conditioner only.

AM: How long do I leave in a conditioning rinse?

MS: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Every formula is different, so you want to be sure to use the product as directed to avoid under or over-conditioning. You can always leave it in a bit longer or switch to another conditioner specifically for the result you want to achieve.

AM: What’s the best water temperature to use when rinsing it?

MS: I prefer luke-warm to cool water, because it helps the cuticle of the hair close during the rinse, which makes the hair shiny and sleek.

AM: How much conditioner should be used for every inch of hair?

MS: It depends on the density, or thickness of the hair. Again, follow the manufacturer’s directions on how much to apply. Many suggest the amount of a quarter however if hair is thinner or really thick you may need more or less.

AM: What are some ingredients that can weigh hair down?

MS: Oils and certain types of silicones can weigh hair down. However, some formulas include these ingredients intentionally, because of the smoothing effect that they create on the hair. This is why it’s important not to leave it in too long and to make sure to get it all out unless it’s a leave-in conditioner.

AM: What ingredients should be avoided?

MS: I’m not a fan of petroleum jelly, or mineral oil. There’s a lot of controversy surrounding silicone, but what most people don’t know is that silicones get a really bad rap because they’re commonly associated with silicones found in products that aren’t made for your hair. Cosmetic-grade silicones like dimethicone actually creates slip, protects the hair from breakage, and helps the hair shaft retain moisture during the styling process.

AM: What about conditioners for color-treated hair?

MS: Some ingredients can break down artificial pigment in the hair, causing it to fade, look dull, or turn brassy. Make sure that the label says that the product is color-safe. You certainly want to switch to products formulated for color-treated hair.

AM: Can I dilute a regular conditioner with water and use it as a detangler?

MS: You can, however, I recommend opting for a product that was intended to be a leave-in conditioner. This will help you avoid unnecessary build-up. Some people like to put a leave in conditioner mixed with water in a spray bottle and add it to their beach bag. After swimming they spray it in to make hair easier to comb through.

AM: What are some mistakes people make when using a leave in or a rise out conditioner?

MS: It's worth noting that over-conditioning is the most common mistake, because too much coating on the hair can cause dryness, brittleness, and ultimately breakage. Make sure you’re not leaving a conditioner in longer than 3 minutes unless the manufacturer instructs you to do so.

Readers of this magazine know that we love Reality shows and BRAVO is a personal favorite of our Co-Founder and Style Director. Any show that involves the Real Housewives franchise and their spin-offs is always a winner in our studio. Lala Kent is a fan favorite on Vanderpump Rules which showcases the lives of hostesses, servers, bartenders and DJs that work at SUR with Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Lisa Vanderpump. In addition to watching this self assured hostess, Lala has a passion for music and this past season we see her perform, and she has also launched a beauty line which we included in a number of looks within her editorial.

From the time Lala came to our set for this shoot, we realized that she is just as stunning, witty and as personable as she is on the show. This girl’s girl talks about how she became a part of this show, where we can find her in LA and more about her beauty line, Give Them Lala. Of course we had a great time incorporating some must have summer looks that are chic with a twist!

ATHLEISURE MAG: We've been fans of yours since you first appeared on Vanderpump Rules. What were you doing prior to this show and how did you end up connecting with the show and what was the audition process like?

LALA KENT: Before the show, I was going on casting, auditions, and fit modeling was paying my bills. Vanderpump Rules came to me when I was eating at Sur. Lisa saw how I interacted with some of the people that worked there and offered me a job as a hostess. With that came a position on the show!

AM: Throughout the seasons that you have been on, we have seen you join the cast, feel out the cast, make bonds, adjust and in this past season it seems like you really came into your own - how has being on the show allowed you to grow and what are you proud of after all these seasons?

LK: Being on the show has been amazing. I think being able to look back and reflect on my actions has helped tremendously. I’ve been able to see when I stand up for myself and when I’m acting like a fool! Everyone that is part of the show has brought a lot to my life and continues to help me evolve.

AM: Can we assume that you will be back for another season?

LK: Yes! I will be Giving Them Lala for another season.

AM MAY HOLDING COURT WITH LALA KENT-4.jpg

AM: You and Lisa have such a great relationship and seems like the ultimate mentor and life coach rolled into one - what is it about Lisa that makes you comfortable to hear her feedback and to take her advice?

LK: Lisa has such a kind heart and offers such motherly love and advice. That, on top of seeing that she is a successful woman, you can’t help but go “I need to listen to her because she’s got it figured out”.

AM MAY HOLDING COURT WITH LALA KENT-5.jpg

AM: We know that Stassi is a fan of the goat cheese balls at SUR. What are you fave dishes and/or cocktails that you enjoy there?

LK: Oooh I love the goat cheese balls too! They are insane. I also love Joe’s pasta and the Penne Sicilienne...and the dumpling. The sauce is epic.

AM: This season we actually see you perform! How long have you been interested in music, what were the elements that came together to make you embrace performing and what can we expect next within this portion of your career?

LK: I grew up in the arts. From choir to plays to musicals, I was just obsessed with it all. Once you leave high school and it’s no longer something you have the luxury of just doing everyday, you slowly lose the confidence you worked so hard for. James really reminded me of my roots and what I love to do. From here, I just hope to keep making music. It is extremely therapeutic for me.

AM: Tell us about BOY - what inspired you to make this song, how is it doing and what's the next single? When does your album drop?

LK: My song BOY just hit number 1 on iTunes in the Electronic genre. That is amazing to me. I was inspired by how it was so EDM but also trap. It gave me creative freedom to think of myself in a different setting, which was very “club”. That’s out of the box for me. I have another single out called “4 U” on iTunes and Spotify. It is a completely different feel than “BOY”. We also just finished recording a song called “What’s it For”. That will be out within the month. As far as an album goes... my schedule is crazy. I think an EP is going to be my next venture. I can’t wait.

AM: We're living in a time of women taking things to the next level and creating a strong community of support - this season you were embracing this belief and really rallying the cast as a whole and especially the woman on the show to do the same. How important is women's empowerment?

LK: I’ve always been a girl’s girl. I know that women get the job done and that there is nothing more powerful than a gang of females. We all have our differences- for me it’s about embracing one another and realizing we are stronger together than we are apart. This is an outlook that’s evolved as I get older. The things that used to make me insecure or second guess myself, are suddenly things I’m thankful for.

AM: We knew you were stunning, you came to set this way and then of course, we created amazing looks for you - so it was not a surprise to us that you have a cosmetic line coming out. Tell us me about the line from the thought behind it, what is currently available, what will be available down the line and where we can get it!

LK: #Give Them Lala Beauty has grown so much in such a short period of time. I started with only 6 lip colors and now have over 50 products. For lips we now have mattes, glosses, and liquid lipsticks. We also expanded into highlighters, eye shadow, eyeliner, and are still growing! My brand is my baby and she is growing up so beautifully. I’m extremely proud.

AM: We were sad to hear about your father passing last month and we remember that your mom was with us on set - how important is it for you to ensure that in addition to all of the amazing opportunities that you have enjoyed that you also spend time with family for the balance that we all need?

LK: Family will always come first. That’s how it has always been and it will always be. If an opportunity comes my way that is meant to be, it will never take away from my family time.

AM: What are 3 skincare products that you swear by?

LK: My Clarisonic, Lancer Skin Polish, Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturizer, and let’s add one more... I die for Desert Essence Original Face Wash. Pair that with your Clarisonic and all your skin dreams will come true.

AM MAY HOLDING COURT WITH LALA KENT-8.jpg

AM: Since you're in LA, where is your favorite place to eat and grab drinks, where do you workout and what's your studio of choice to work out?

LK: Oooh, this is tough. Obviously, I love me some Sur. I love Mr. Chow, but I’m always a sucker for the Polo Lounge. I go crazy for caviar. I have a gym where I live. It’s got great equipment and everyone is familiar with everyone- we all know each other’s routine so no one is ever fighting or waiting over a machine.

AM: You have a great body, what are 3 workouts that you do that keep you looking summer ready?

LK: I owe the bod to my trainer, Jenna Willis. She is amazing. I love my food and I love my drink. Somehow she puts together routines that kick my butt into great shape even with my undisciplined diet. I love my sumo squats, side planks help my tummy get firm, and the rowing machine is a great warm-up!

AM: How do you give of your time or give back from a philanthropic standpoint?

LK: My family and I are very into animals. My mom works for the humane society. I contribute my time and money to the Humane Society of Utah. I’m also an advocate for our whales- I’ve teamed up with PETA for Empty The Tanks. That is the cause I am most passionate about.

AM: Feel free to tell us anything that you haven't been able to or would like us to know!

LK: I have a really hard time walking in heels unless I’m slightly drunk.
