November 20, 2019

Your libido can be affected by a number of different factors all at one time, but with exercise helping to clear the mind and maintain a healthy diet, there is a way that it can also help you to boost your libido over time. In this article, we will be providing you with 5 ways that exercise can help to boost your libido in the long term.

Helps To Improve Diet And Reduce Cramp

Though exercise is important in the long term it helps to maintain a healthy weight it can also help to reduce cramp and stress in the long term. This is great for your libido as you feel more awake and alert allowing you to feel more active. Though a change in diet can take time to provide the results that you wish to see, this is a lifestyle change that will continue to boost your libido and keep you feeling great at all times.

Improves Blood Circulation

One of the biggest issues when it comes to your libido is blood circulation as this can leads to other issues such as erectile dysfunction. Though this can be resolved by choosing medication such as sildenafil tablets, exercise can help to boost the circulation and help reduce the effects of the issue. Therefore, doing a minimum of 30 mins a day of exercise can help to improve blood flow and boost libido over time making this the perfect option for those dealing with erectile dysfunction and lack of energy.

Enhances Sexual Performance

When you are in a better physical and mental state, you are scientifically proven to perform better in bed. This is great for those that regularly exercise as they have more energy and can provide an all-round better experience. Therefore, exercising such as cardio or weights can help you to improve physical fitness as well as mental wellbeing can help to enhance the overall experience and make the process more enjoyable for everyone. Whether this is exercising once a week to start off with, or heading to the gym three times a week, this can all help you in the long term.

Reduces Stress

Stress can play a big part in lack of libido and it is also one of the most common causes of discomfort. When exercising frequently, you are likely to experience less stress as a result, therefore, resulting in a much high libido. Though it can take time to feel the stress ease, this will benefit you in the long term as a healthy lifestyle can help to lessen signs of stress and maintain higher energy levels. The more energy that you have throughout the day, the much higher your libido is due to be as you will feel much less lethargic.

Improves Flexibility and Strength

The final way that exercise can help to boost your libido is through the increased flexibility and strength. This not only helps you to explore in the bedroom, but it helps to reduce cramp and maintain a healthy love life over time. Though flexibility comes from repeated exercise and can take a while to achieve, this can benefit you in the long term with strength that can help you in every aspect of life.

With this in mind, there are a number of ways that you can reduce cramp and maintain a healthy lifestyle that can help to boost your libido and improve the way that you feel in the bedroom. Will you be looking to boost your libido in the new year?

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | MIGRAINE WITH DR. ELIZABETH SENG + LALA ANTHONY

November 17, 2019

When a headache hits, it makes doing the most rudimentary of tasks so difficult! All you can think about is the pounding in your head. For those that suffer from migraines, the affects are even more apparent and can really alter their day to day lives. Whether you or someone that you know is affected by this, we sat down and talked with Dr. Elizabeth Seng to find out about what migraines are, how they are started and why they are so problematic. In addition, we sat down with STARZ's Power and FOX's BH90210's LaLa Anthony to find out how she works through migraines and how she is able to cope when they take place!

ATHLEISURE MAG: What is a headache and what are the symptoms when one is coming up?

DR. ELIZABETH SENG: A headache is a neurological attack characterized by head pain. Depending on the headache type, there may be other neurological symptoms as well. Depending on headache type, the head pain can be caused by pain receptors in head and neck muscles or in the membrane around the brain and blood vessels. There are many different triggers for headaches and symptoms can vary from person to person.

AM: What is the difference between a headache and a migraine?

DR. ES: There are many different types of headache disorders. Tension-type headache, the most common type of headache, is typically a pressing pain on both sides of the head. A migraine attack typically includes a pulsing pain on one side of the head and is accompanied by a variety of additional symptoms from your average headache including pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light, sound, and/or smell. Anyone can suffer from migraine, but they are more likely to occur in women, ages 20 to 45. Three out of every four migraine sufferers are women, and roughly 39 million Americans suffer from migraine.

AM: What are the symptoms of a migraine and how do you know when one is coming on?

DR. ES: A migraine attack typically includes a pulsing pain on one side of the head and is accompanied by a variety of additional symptoms from your average headache including pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light, sound, and/or smell. For both tension-type headache and migraine, the factors that trigger attacks vary widely from person to person. Determining what triggers your migraine attacks can help you better manage them. Regular stress management and keeping a consistent sleep and eating schedule can help sufferers avoid a migraine attack. You should also keep an acute medication on you, such as Excedrin Migraine, to take at the first sign of a migraine attack could do that.

Migraine should always be diagnosed by a doctor, so if you think you are experiencing a migraine, talk to your doctor to get the proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

AM: What is it about a migraine that makes people have to miss events or even to change aspects of their lives?

DR. ES: Most of my professional research has a focus on head pain and specifically, migraines, and most people don’t realize that migraines can disrupt a person’s everyday life and pull them away from important moments. Some days my patients are completely bedridden due to a migraine and other days they’ll power through an event but won’t truly feel present even if they are physically there. That’s because while on the outside they may “look fine,” on the inside they are managing much more which pulls them away from being mentally present in the moment.

While not often discussed, unfortunately, this is very common. A recent survey from Excedrin found that nearly 9 in 10 migraine sufferers have had to miss an important event, like a wedding or graduation, due to a migraine, and 91% of people with migraines would like a second chance at all of the moments they’ve missed.

That’s why I’m excited to partner with Excedrin on Excedrin Take Two (Oct 7th - Oct 18th) to help shine a light on the physical and emotional toll that migraines can take, and to help sufferers relive the moments they’ve missed – this time without the migraine.

LA2.jpeg

AM: In the category of migraines, are their varying levels?

DR. ES: Yes. The biggest category of migraine is different frequencies. About 10% of people have migraine that we consider episodic, which occurs on fewer than half of the days of the month. However, about 2% of people have chronic migraine, or migraine on which headache attacks occur on 15 or more days per month. Chronic migraine is particularly disabling. There are also different symptoms you can get with migraine: some people experience an aura prior to the head pain onset, which often manifests as visual symptoms like geometric patterns, flashing lights or possibly a shimmering effect (sort of like heat waves). If you think you have migraine, be sure to talk to a doctor to get an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

AM: Is there a number of migraines that one may have where a person suffering from them may feel that they need to visit their doctor to ensure that there isn’t something else that is going on?

DR. ES: We consider a person to have the disease of migraine if they have experienced five or more attacks in their lifetime. If you have experienced several headache attacks you think might be migraine, it is a good time to go to your doctor to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. There are two typed of migraine treatment: acute treatments are used at the moment of the attack to reduce the attack severity. Some people may use over the counter medication, like Excedrin Migraine, whereas others may use prescription medication acutely to treat the attack. All people with migraine, of any frequency, should have an acute migraine treatment plan. Preventive treatments are taken routinely to reduce migraine frequency, such as daily medications, injections every three months, or lifestyle changes. People with migraine who are experiencing 4 or more attacks per month should talk to their doctor about prevention options.

AM: What is it about Excedrin that helps those that suffer from migraines?

DR. ES: Excedrin Migraine is a combination of three components: acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. Excedrin Migraine is an FDA-approved over-the-counter medication for migraine.

After chatting with Dr. Seng to find out about the differences between a headache and a migraine, how they start and the need to diagnose this condition, we sat down with LaLa Anthony to give us more information on how she handles this while living a busy life as a mom, actress and more!

ATHLEISURE MAG: We've enjoyed watching you in Power and I loved that you were in Beverly Hills 90210 Revival and hope that you and the show will be back for another season - what's your process like when you go about selecting shows that you will be apart of?

LALA ANTHONY: I like to pick characters that I’m drawn to and feel like I can bring to life. I try to look for different roles so I’m not always playing the same type of character. 90210 was definitely something that was different for me and I had a great time doing it.

AM: Being a busy mom and always having a number of shows and appearances you're a part of have migraines affected those experiences?

LA: Migraines have definitely affected many experiences and caused me to not feel present for certain moments. I always power through for work or to shoot – you have to because when you’re on set there is a whole production crew relying on you to show up. But there have been other days I can’t function or get out of bed.

I get really upset when a migraine impacts moments with my family. There have been events at my son’s school that I couldn’t go to because of a migraine and I had to rest in bed all day. Kiayn is in middle school now and with school, basketball practice and hanging out with friends, family moments are even more important. It's frustrating that migraines can get in the way.

Luckily, I’ve learned my triggers and to treat my migraine as soon as I feel it coming with Excedrin Migraine. It’s a brand that has really helped me get my life back.

AM: Many battle issues with migraines, what are your triggers when you know that it's coming on and what are you able to do to alleviate it?

LA: I know immediately when a migraine is coming. Changes to my routine including not sleeping, eating certain foods and stress will trigger a migraine and I'll be on edge all day. It starts off feeling like a mild headache but gets rapidly worse. I try to catch it and treat it right away with Excedrin Migraine so it doesn’t disrupt the rest of my day and I can continue to be present.

AM: Do migraines create situations where you're not able to participate in something or be at a 100%?

LA: All the time. I get a migraine about once a week and unfortunately, migraines can really leave me exhausted and with no energy. Even if I’m having a great day, a migraine can come on suddenly and make it difficult to feel in the moment. I was struggling with a migraine at a family reunion once and it was so hard to feel present. It was really disappointing since family reunions only happen once every couple of years and it’s something I was really looking forward to.

AM: What is the Excedrin Take Two program?

LA: This partnership with Excedrin was so authentic for me because, like I’ve said, it’s a brand that really does help me get back to myself when a migraine is trying to sideline me. And I’m not alone at all in that – in fact, almost 9 in 10 migraine sufferers say they have had to miss an important life event due to a migraine and 91% of them would like a second chance at their missed moments. So that’s what Excedrin Take Two is all about! Excedrin is giving migraine sufferers a second chance to relive and enjoy a moment missed by a migraine. All you have to do is share your story at for a chance to win a “Take Two!”

AM: As someone who spends a lot of time traveling, what are 3 things that are in your carryon or maybe a kit that you keep on set that you have at the ready to either make you comfortable or to feel like you have a bit of home with you.

LA: I always like to pack a candle and I always keep my favorite snacks (like trail mix / Crunch bars), and Excedrin Migrane, just in case!

TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT: INDICATIONS, PREPARATION, SURGERY AND REHABILITATION

November 1, 2019

Total knee replacement is a surgical substitution of the diseased knee joint with the artificial one (i.e. implant or endoprosthesis). Results of the multicenter studies have shown that up to 85% of patients are satisfied with the improvement of their life quality after the procedure. Novel equipment in the specialized orthopedic hospitals allows carrying out the knee replacement surgery with minimally invasive techniques. Thus, after undergoing orthopedic rehabilitation a patient can perform all usual activities without any restrictions.

When you should consider the total knee replacement

In Germany, total knee replacement is performed as the last-line therapy, as doctors give preference to medicamentous and physical therapy whenever it possible. Only when medications and conservative measures can not relieve pain, knee replacement is considered.

Total knee replacement in Germany is carried out in the following cases:

  • Osteoarthritis stage IV (or stage III with severe disability).

  • Severe traumatic damage of the knee.

  • Inborn joint deformities, including the complex ones (e.g. dysplasia in combination with arthritis).

  • Autoimmune knee lesions (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis).

  • Infectious knee lesions.

All these pathologies are united by clinical manifestations, i.e. pain syndrome, stiffness and difficulties while walking or bending the knee. The surgery is aimed at relieving the disturbing symptoms regardless of their root cause.

How you prepare for the arthroplasty

Although you will be able to walk on walker or crutches soon after the minimally invasive surgery, help with cooking, bathing, and shopping will be useful during first weeks. Make it sure that a relative or friend will provide you with all the necessary assistance.

During the rehabilitation period it will also be useful to make several modifications for facilitating daily activities, like:

  • Constructing the secure handrails along stairways or preparing the temporary living space on one floor in order to avoid walking up or down stairs.

  • Constructing the secure handrail in the shower.

  • Preparing the chair for bathing or shower bench.

  • Preparing the special chair with a firm cushion and back that is equipped with a footstool for leg elevation.

  • Removing all not fixed or slippery carpets.

In addition, you should inform surgeon about all medications you are taking currently. Such drugs as warfarin, clopidogrel, ibuprofen, and acetylsalicylic acid must be stopped several days before the intervention.

How the surgery is performed

Total knee replacement is carried out under the epidural or general anesthetic. A doctor moves aside the knee cap and nearby muscles via the few skin incisions. Sparing muscles is essential for the proper functioning of the implant. Reaching the damaged joint, doctor removes the affected parts of the shin and thigh bones. Joint surfaces of both bones are adjusted to the artificial joint implantation.

The endoprosthesis is fixed in the right position with the help of bone “cement”. A surgeon may also use the cementless method, when a bone grows naturally inside the prosthesis and fixes it. This option requires more time for the final healing.

Once the fixation is successfully completed, a doctor repairs muscles and skin with few stitches. A patient is moved to the recovery room. Once the surgical anesthesia is worn off, he is examined by an experienced physical therapist. In case no complications are revealed, patient may leave the healthcare institution the same day. After that a rehabilitation program starts. It may be performed in the specialized center or at home.

Choosing the hospital and arrangement of treatment abroad

Virtually each person can undergo total knee replacement in Germany. Nevertheless, for the foreigners it will be easier to use services of Booking Health. Booking Health is the medical tourism provider that arranges treatment in Germany for over 12 years. Excellent quality of the company’s work is confirmed by the international ISO certificate 9001:2015.

  • Communication with the physician after treatment completion, distant consultations on the results of control examinations, etc.

  • Organization of additional examinations or rehabilitation in Germany.

  • Providing reasonable cost of medical services, avoiding overpricing (saving up to 50%).

  • All-inclusive financial control.

Not only is this in your appearance, but this confidence transcends into other aspects of your life with multiple benefits. Whether this is working towards a promotion at work or the confidence to work towards something such as a long-term goal or a dream-like running your own business. This, therefore, has a wide range of benefits that are much more than just improving your looks.

Long Term Cost Savings

In addition to this, procedures such as hair transplants and hair transplant scar removal Turkey has to offer come at a more than affordable price. This is beneficial to your life in the long term as you are saving money on a number of other treatments. Though it can take time to find the right medical professional to undergo the treatment with, this will help to ensure that you get the results that you want whilst sticking to your budget. This is crucial because you could leave yourself out of pocket particularly if you are due to have a number of different treatments.

Permanently Eliminates Hair Loss

Though the healing process does take time, the main benefit of this style of procedure is that it permanently eliminates hair loss. By implanting the hair from the donor area into the affected area, you are bringing a new lease of life to your hair, allowing for new hair to grow in its place. Due to the style of procedure, the hair is kept healthy before being implanted, ensuring that you have the best possible chance of growing healthy hair without needing to undergo another procedure. With this in mind, this is one of the only options that work for those suffering from hereditary hair loss.

Improves Self Image

The final impact that a hair transplant can have on your life is the improved sense of self-image. Not only does it benefit your confidence, but it can benefit you in social situations such as parties or family gatherings. With increased eye-contact as well as newfound confidence, you can then begin to relax and enjoy yourself more when in social events. Though this will take time to see results from this, you will slowly begin to notice the effects in everyday life helping you to feel more confident.

With this in mind, there are a number of ways that a hair transplant can improve your life in just a few simple ways. Will you be opting for a hair transplant to combat your hair loss?

INTERNIST EXPLAINS WHY IT CAN BE DANGEROUS TO PLAY “DR. GOOGLE”

October 20, 2019

The search engine Google is one of the most useful information tools to emerge in modern times.  “Google” is a recognized verb.  Googling, “how to cook gluten-free recipes” is harmless and informative.  Googling, “is my husband having a heart attack?’ can be deadly.  Approximately eight out of 10 Americans search for medical information on the internet. When is it safe to use the internet to learn about health symptoms and treatment and when are you playing with your life? Hypochondria has now turned to Cyberchondria. We turned to Dr. Niket Sonpal, a New York City internist and gastroenterologist for some answers.

The Perils of Using Google For Health Questions/Symptoms

1)    You don’t know how reliable a site is

You have to pay attention to things like, how old is the information on that site? Is it backed by real clinical studies from Universities or institutions like the Mayo Clinic? Does this site have an agenda? Have they put information up there as “clickbait” to lure you into buying a product they are selling such as a supplement, diet program, or book?  If you google the information on other sites, so other sites corroborate what was said? Are the quotes coming from a physician who is board-certified in his or her sub-specialty and can you find this physician online?

2)    Googling Symptoms Can Cause Health Anxiety

Google just about any symptom and there’s bound to be results that suggest surgery or connect the symptom with a form of cancer. These extreme conclusions can cause serious anxiety, especially for people who are already afraid of health problems. This anxiety happens so frequently today, there’s a name for it—cyberchondria. According to the British news source DailyMail.com, millions suffer from it. Cyberchondriacs turn to the Web for comfort about their health issues instead of a health professional. They can become obsessed and the amount of time they spend checking the Web for information can interfere with their daily lives.

3)    Stay Away from Health Message Boards

Don’t share your worries on message boards or ask for prescription drug recommendations. Dr. Sonpal has seen people ask questions such as: Has anyone tried Prozac for depression? They hear one person with a negative experience and then shy away from trying a drug that could potentially help them.

If you go to a random message board with your concerns, people are going to reply with horrific diagnoses, potentially lethal information, and their own experiences with prescription drugs that won’t be identical to yours. Physicians don’t moderate these message boards. If dangerous/erroneous advice is given, there is nobody to stop it from being published.

4)    You can misdiagnosis yourself for better or worse

Perhaps you awake one morning to strange bumps all over your body. You put your symptoms into google and decide that based on several pages of descriptions, you have prickly heat and you treat it yourself according to what is published on google. What if the reality is that you have adult chickenpox and you leave it untreated?  Conversely, the hypochondriac side can emerge, where you google symptoms and over-diagnose yourself because you have been having some chest pain that day. You think you are having a heart attack when the reality is, you were simply having upper gas pain.

5)    Don’t use Google in the midst of a health crisis

If your infant suddenly stops breathing now is not the time to Google, “how to perform CPR.”  This is when you call 911 and get medical help on the ground as soon as possible and take the direction that the operators give you on the line while medical help is on the way.  It is a good idea to google how to perform CPR in a non-crisis situation from a reliable website such as https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/cpr/performing-cpr/cpr-steps

6)    Google does not know you and has never seen you

When you visit an internist or any other responsible medical doctor, you fill out an extensive form. This form includes, among other things, your age, height, weight, sex, gender race, medical history, medications you are taking, surgeries you have had, allergies, family health history, diseases you currently, suffer from,

mental health history etc. A doctor uses all of this to gather information in making his/her diagnosis and make sure that if he/she is dispensing medication that none of it interacts with what you are already taking.  Google does not know any of this!

When it is OK to use Google as a tool for basic health questions?

Dr. Sonpal says, “the simpler the question, the better. If you are absolutely sure of what an ailment/injury is, and you have had it or seen it before, then visiting a reliable site for information can be useful.

Examples of Topics that are Safe to Google

  • What constitutes high blood pressure? (if you have it seek treatment)

  • How do you treat a mild sunburn?

  • How do you remove a splinter?

  • What is better to lower a fever, Tylenol or Advil

  • Should I put hot or cold on my joint if I fall?

  • What should I do if I’m dehydrated?

  • How should I treat a minor cut or abrasion?

  • What food can I eat if I have an upset stomach?

  • Should I starve myself if I have a cold and feed myself If I have a fever?

  • How should I treat a bee sting?

  • How much water should I drink each day?

  • How do I treat a bloody nose?

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | ADVANCED MELANOMA

September 25, 2019

At Athleisure Mag, we have always championed a number of reasons why Safe Sun is essential and making our readers aware of the importance of knowing about the effects of the sun and why it's important to protect your bodies. We had the chance to talk with Dr. Adil Daud, Co-Director of the Melanoma Clinical Research, UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center to talk with him about a study that was released by The New England Journal of Medicine. This study focused on treatments for advanced melanoma patients that showed promise with the largest pooled analysis of patients with BRAF-mutated Metastatic Melanoma.

We sat down with Dr. Daud to get down to basics on skin cancer, melanoma, the different kinds of diseases in this area, treatment and more.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Can you tell us what skin cancer is and what the different types are?

DR. ADIL DAUD: Skin cancer includes basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma and other types of cancer.

AM: How is melanoma different than other skin cancers?

DR. AD: The biggest difference is that it has a tendency to spread to the rest of your body. So, when you look at the deaths caused by skin cancer, the majority of them are caused by melanoma.

AM: What is the difference between melanoma and advanced melanoma and why is it more aggressive and deadly than other skin cancers?

DR. AD: We don’t fully understand that, but one of the reasons is that it has this tendency to spread. Advanced melanoma refers to Stage IV melanoma where it has spread to the lymph nodes and the rest of your body – the lungs, liver, brain and other organs.

AM: Can one be cured from melanoma?

DR. AD: From early-stage melanoma, it can be cured. Most people are cured from surgery alone. With advanced melanoma, you can be alive and disease-free. And that’s what the subject of this study is. You probably can’t be cured as that’s not the terms that we use for advanced cancer. The study shows that 50% of melanomas have a mutation in this gene called BRAF and in those patients, many of them are very sensitive to the combination of Tafinlar and Mekinist – those are the 2 drugs that this study is dealing with. Basically, that study showed that a third of the patients are alive and a fifth of the patients were disease free for 5 years. That’s an important landmark to show that for the first time, that those that have the BRAF mutant kind of melanoma, you can have a good outcome even after 5 years.

AM: What are the mutation types of melanoma and how does one evaluate their treatment options?

DR. AD: We know that cancer can look the same under the microscope but can have different driver mutations. For melanoma specifically, about 50% of melanoma has a BRAF mutation and about 50% have other mutations of genes like RAS. There are a bunch of melanomas where today, we don’t know exactly what drives them forward. But we know about the 50% that have the BRAF mutation and that was the focus of this study.

AM: Can you tell us about the study and the promising treatment?

DR. AD: We’ve known for many years that the BRAF mutation kind of melanoma can be sensitive to the combination of dabrafenib and trametinib. The study shows us that even up to 5 years, a lot of patients with metastatic or advanced melanoma that’s prepped throughout your body can be disease free in some cases and alive at that 5 year landmark. It’s important to remember that a lot of these drugs have real side effects like fevers, chills, skin rashes and in some cases serious side effects like lung problems, heart problems and vision problems. So you need to be supervised by a medical oncologist.

AM: How can one prevent melanoma from happening?

DR. AD: One of the most important things you can do is to apply sunscreen, a hat and some protective clothing. Especially for children, we have realized that sun burns and sun exposure in childhood may drive some of these melanomas. So for them, it’s important to supply sunscreen, put on UV clothing and maybe avoid the sun during the 10am – 2pm time period where UV radiation is the most intense.

5 TEETH PROBLEMS THAT ONLY THE BEST DENTIST CAN HELP WITH

September 18, 2019

Truly, dental problems are one of the many headaches in life. However, most common teeth problems can be prevented by yourself – and your dentist, of course. As per dentists, brushing your teeth 2 to 3 times each day and flossing it will keep it away from almost all teeth problems (unless your chewing ice) – plus regular check-ups of your teeth are a huge help to know the status of what’s going on with your teeth. To keep your teeth healthy, you have to educate yourself on what to eat, what to do daily, and how frequently to visit the dentist.

Teeth are sometimes called the “front page” of a person – and if you have a tooth problem, you cannot smile, talk, and laugh confidently. It’s difficult, isn’t it? Oral health & hygiene must be taken seriously. You need to have self-discipline and you must know how to follow the do’s and don’ts. After speaking with a Placerville Dentist, in this article, we will tackle the common teeth problems that only a dentist can help with.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay or also known as cavities or dental caries occurs through the bacteria found in plaque and has the chance to meddle in your teeth. If you happen to have cavities, sadly, your teeth will be permanently damaged – and might result in small holes until it gets larger if you don’t see a dentist. Your dentist will do a treatment to you either fluoride treatments, fillings, crowns, root canals, and tooth extractions.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis or also known as gum disease is where an infection is brought out through accumulations of the plaque in your mouth. These bacteria will scatter in your mouth and will eat up your gum tissues as well as your ligaments – which are known to hold your teeth to be in place. There are 5 different stages of this disease and you have enough time to prevent it. See a dentist and expect to do the following treatment either non-surgical or surgical – scaling, root planing, taking topical or oral antibiotics, flap surgery, soft tissue grafts, bone grafting, tissue regeneration, and applying tissue-stimulating proteins.

Tooth Infection

Tooth infection happens when the bottom spot of your tooth is infected and filled up with bacteria. If you will not see a dentist and left it untreated, a single tooth infection will damage the pulp tissues of your tooth as well as its nerves. Expect to have a treatment of root canal to prevent it from any kind of damage.

Enamel Degradation

Enamel degradation is the presence of discoloration shaped in the round that can be found in the enamel surface. It occurs because of taking too much sugary food and drinks – and they will wear down your enamel. Your dentist will clean your teeth and do a fluoride treatment as the first step of preventing it.

Tooth Crowding

Having a misaligned teeth might lead to jaw disorders as well as misaligned bites. While this might come out naturally, it can be fixed by a dentist by having braces. This go-to treatment will make your teeth aligned with one another. If you opt for braces, except for some extraction when needed.

WHAT SUPPLEMENTS ARE GOOD FOR YOUR PROSTATE?

August 28, 2019

In achieving great overall health and wellness, you must be consistent in taking care of your body and its different parts and organs to ensure that they function harmoniously. This includes your reproductive organs, as they are vital to both your physical and holistic health.

In light of this, one of the leading cancers common in American men is prostate cancer, next to skin cancer. An estimated 30,000 men have died from prostate cancer this year, making it the second cause of cancer death in the United States, after lung cancer. Because of this, men should endeavor to always keep their prostate in good condition.

What Can Men Do For Their Prostate?

As men age, their prostate relatively increases from being the size of a walnut to the size of an apricot as they reach 60 years of age. This enlargement is called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), though it remains unclear why this happens. Other common prostate problems that occur amongst men are chronic prostatitis, acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis, and prostate cancer. Symptoms of prostate gland enlargement include:

●      Frequent and painful urination

●      Blood in urine or semen

●      Urinary incontinence

●      Frequent pain in the lower back, upper thighs, hips, and rectal area

●      Painful ejaculation

To prevent symptoms from worsening, men can practice various healthy habits to keep their prostate in good condition. One of these is having healthy eating patterns by consuming fruits and vegetables with deep and bright colors, healthy fats, and high-protein meals in the right portions. Together with the proper diet, men can boost their prostate health through taking vitamins and supplements, like the Prostagenix, which promotes prostate health and combats BPH. To shed light on the matter, you can take dietary prostate supplements, all of which have varying effects, according to your physician’s prescription. Here are some of them:

Pygeum

Extracted from the bark of African cherry trees, pygeum is known for its wide array of health benefits, including remedies for BPH, cure for prostate cancer, and treatment for prostatitis symptoms. Since prostate issues are usually linked with prostate enlargement, pygeum can help in shrinking the prostate and prevent or slow down its further enlargement. In this way, pygeum can relieve various symptoms such as poor, painful, and frequent urination, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Pygeum extracts usually come into two classifications: Pygeum africanum and Prunus africana. Physicians generally recommended 75 mg to 200 mg of pygeum each day to be a safe amount. Pygeum supplements usually exist in capsule and tablet forms, which can be taken orally. However, side effects like nausea and abdominal pain might occur.

Beta-sitosterol

Beta-sitosterols, which are steroids found in most plants, are a chemical substance resembling the structure of cholesterol. It is found in nutritious foods like soybeans, peanuts, wheat germs, rice bran, and corn oils. Aside from its health benefits that deal with heart diseases, the immune system, allergies, the common cold, asthma, and more, beta-sitosterols are also found to benefit the prostate. Similar to pygeum extracts, beta-sitosterols can alleviate the benign enlargement of the prostate and prevent the exacerbation of prostate cancer. In women, this substance is also used for menopausal symptoms. Beta-sitosterols also aid in boosting sexual activity and hormonal regulation.

Beta-sitosterols are also recommended to be consumed orally, and it’s also safe when applied to the skin. However, taking beta-sitosterol supplements can cause inconvenient side effects such as gas, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, and nausea, but these can be manageable. These supplements come in the form of tablets and capsules, and are affordable.

Saw Palmetto

The saw palmetto or American dwarf palm tree yields ripe fruits known as the saw palmetto, which are highly significant in the field of health and medicine. This is commonly used in preventing the symptoms of BPH. It doesn’t actually shrink the size of the prostate, but it shrinks the inner lining on the tubes carrying urine. Through this treatment, painful urination can be lessened as there’s decreased pressure on the ureters.

However, because it is a folk remedy, saw palmetto may not be as effective as other supplements and medications for BPH. Even though its effects in the body occur slowly, saw palmetto can otherwise help in the prostate’s post-surgery conditions. Taking 320 mg of saw palmetto everyday for two months before a prostate surgery is known to be helpful during the actual operation. It can lessen the time spent on the surgery, the risk of issues developing during the surgery, and diminished blood loss.

Conclusion

As most people often forget its importance, the prostate gland is an essential organ in the male reproductive system that is responsible for various components of the semen. Through taking these dietary supplements, men can contribute to their prostate health and slow down the impending symptoms and occurrences of prostate issues.

WANT TO WORK FROM HOME? THERE MAY BE SOME PITFALLS ACCORDING TO AN NYC NEUROPSYCHIATRIST

August 24, 2019

Dr. Sanam Hafeez,  NYC neuropsychologist,  points out some essential things to consider before choosing to work from home.

Studies, surveys, and census information show that about 8 million Americans work from home at least part of the week.  This amount is considerably higher today than it was back in the early 2000s. This section of the workforce is expected to grow in the coming years as online resources continue catering to this setup. The improvement of internet connectivity, collaborative applications, and software, as well as the proliferation of studies showing increases in employee productivity when working from home, have contributed to the general change of mind on this work/lifestyle choice.

But is working from home for everybody? What characteristics make for a more successful remote employee? What are some of the drawbacks for individuals working at home?

Dr. Sanam Hafeez is a Neuropsychologist in NYC with a Faculty Appointment at Columbia University. She points out that “as online tools and telecommuting become more commonplace, more conversations need to be had about what characteristics and job responsibilities a team member needs to have in order to carry out their duties successfully while working from home.”

Dr. Hafeez explains that not all personalities are the same and that employees need to be assessed in order to “determine where they would, not only feel happiest but also be more productive.”

Here Is What You Should Take Into Account If You Are Thinking Of Working Remotely:

  • Isolation

Everyone who has ever had to wake up to go to work on a Monday with little sleep, low energy or a personal issue gnawing at their mind, has felt the annoyance of having to go to the office and attend a Monday meeting. This does not mean, however, that working from home is ideal for you, explains Dr. Sanam Hafeez.  “Nearly everyone will experience that feeling of wanting to stay home instead of heading into work. For the majority of people going to work adds meaning and stimulation to their day. Introverts may have an easier time acclimating to the lack of human interaction in a work-from-home situation, but for extroverts, the lack of camaraderie and the isolation they may feel at home may be an essential deterrent that leads them to opt for an on-site position,” says Dr. Hafeez. In a 2-year Standford University study on productivity and remote work, more than half of the study group felt too isolated at home and indicated their change of heart when it came to working from home 100 percent of the time.

  • Little Separation of Home and Work

Home is where the heart is. For many of us, opening the door to our house or apartment after a long day brings a feeling of calmness from the constant stimuli of the workday. “For people who consistently work at home there might be issues separating work from play, rest and family,” says Dr. Hafeez. For an organized person who can confine their work to an established workstation within the home, this might be less of an issue but for those of us who study in bed, or like to work on the dinner table or couch this presents a challenge. “Sleep Hygiene is one of the areas where this also comes to play because our bed should be for sleep and sex.  If you are scattering papers across the place you sleep and spending hours upon hours working in bed, there is no signaled change to the brain that the bed is for sleep.  Making it difficult later on to wind down,” explains Dr. Hafeez.

  • Distractions

A cardinal rule for determining whether to work at home or in the office should always be, know thyself. “This means you are being honest with yourself as to your abilities to navigate and ignore temptations and distractions on your own without the structure of an office and team environment,” says Dr. Hafeez. People who are self-disciplined tend to do well working from home because their personality is conducive to holding themselves accountable. But if you know that in the absence of a manager or co-workers you would fall victim to distractions like the TV, food, or other to-do items, then choosing to stay in office may be an important self-reflective decision you need to make for you and your career.

  • The Dependance of Family on Your Time

One problem with working at home if you have a lot of dependents or people that count on you is the perception to those around you that you are not busy. “This means that if you are at home and something comes up, even if not urgent, you may be asked to deal with it,” warns Dr. Hafeez. This is something to consider and a conversation to be had with those you care about. People who are people-pleasers may have a difficult time adhering to their work in a moment when someone they care about needs a favor. If you still decide to work from home “consider having systems in place to deal with needs that come up. Such systems might include pharmacy delivery services, food delivery and medical transport for older adults. This may help in navigating some issues,” suggests Dr. Hafeez.

  • A Decrease In Company Rapport

For those of us with an invested interest in growing within a company and investing in our career, working from home may not be the best choice in lieu of an office option. While many companies are growing off of a collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit of remote work, companies that have headquartered spaces need people present. “Presence breeds familiarity and familiarity drives rapport,” affirms Dr. Hafeez. If a big client crisis happens, the first to know are those in the office, and if you are at home, working remotely, you might lose out on the opportunity to give your input. While people w

WHAT ARE TERPENES?

August 3, 2019

Smell that cheese?! Or as a vegan would put – the scent of nutritional yeast?

One whiff of a cannabis flower perks you up with its lemon scent, yet another reminds you of a lavender essential oil your yoga teacher luxuriously massages your tense neck muscles with.

Why does each strain of cannabis smell differently? And do different fragrant correlate with anything else, like the plant’s benefits?

The answer to your scent-related questions can all be answered by exploring one thing – terpenes!

What are Terpenes?

Terpenes, similar to terpenoids, are a combination of carbon and hydrogen that naturally occur in cannabis plants. Let’s refer to them as “hydrocarbons”.

What’s the difference between a terpene and a terpenoid?

Terpenoids are essentially terpenes that have been dried out via a chemical modification, which alters the oxygen compound, whereas terpenes are the organic, naturally occurring combo of hydrogen and oxygen before any alterations.

Terpenes are birthed in the trichomes of the cannabis plant. What are the trichomes?!

Trichomes are the crystal-like part of the plant, on the outside of the plant’s leaves and buds. The trichomes’ duty is to protect the plant from invaders, like insects and animals.

Trichomes are smart and have the same idea as nasty-smelling skunks – they create pungent odors (terpenes) to repel outsiders. According to this review here, they are

As terpenes repel the bad guys, they also lure in pollinators.

Different Types of Terpenes

The creation of terpenes are influenced by the plant’s environment – weather, time of day, soil, fertilization, maturation, etc.

Just as different essential oils perk you up or mellow you out, effects of terpenes vary.

There are two basic types of terpenes, sativa terpenes and indica terpenes. Sativa terpenes smell bright like an orange or lemon and tend to boost your energy. The opposite, indica terpenes, are more soothing, with scents similar to a pine cone.

Terpenes are broken down even further according to their specific smell and benefits. Here are the most common:

-        Limonene – smells like a citrus fruit, and is also found in… you guessed it - citrus fruits! Some benefits include treatment for anxiety, depression, pain and inflammation.

-        Beta-caryophyllene – fragrances like spices – black pepper, pine, cloves and cinnamon. A few benefits include easing pain, ulcers, and anxiety.

-        Linalool -  smells like florally plants such as lavender, with similar benefits – relaxation.

-        Myrcene – the most commonly found terpene is also found in fruits like a mango! Effects of myrcene are similar to the old tv commercials of cartoons melted into a couch – they have a sedating, calming effect.

Further Benefits of Terpenes

Terpenes are not only found in the cannabis plant – they are found in just about every plant!

Therapeutic effects of terpenes rise even more when mixed with cannabinoids like THC and CBD.

Strands of the cannabis plant vary dependent on the terpenes, which correlate with an array of benefits, depending on the plant’s scent.

The more you train your nose, the easier it is to identify terpenes, thus identifying different strands of cannabis! Finally, your nose gets a chance to participate in the cannabinoid fun.

PLASTIC SURGEON WARNS: "SUNBURN TATTOOS" COULD BE THE WORST VIRAL CHALLENGE EVER

July 28, 2019

Instagram is full of all kinds of viral challenges. Some of them are charitable such as “The Ice Bucket Challenge,” some are silly like the Kylie Jenner 'Lip Challenge,' others are fitness-oriented such as planking in obscure places. The sunburn tattoo challenge which has its own hashtag on Instagram is downright dangerous. Dr. Manish Shah is a board-certified Denver, Colorado plastic surgeon. As a father of three teenagers, he is all too aware of this alarming summer trend.

What it is: Young people are putting stencils or stickers on their skin, then they lay in the sun without sunscreen. After they burn and take the stencil off – what’s behind is an outline known as the “sunburn tattoo.”  Other sunbathers do the inverse and use a stencil to hide some skin from the sun while burning the surrounding area.

The dangers: Dr. Shah says, “At first glance, it may look like harmless fun in the sun. The bottom line is that sunburn tattoos are extremely dangerous and can put you at serious risk of skin cancer.” What makes this more dangerous than a ‘standard burn’ explains Dr. Shah is that for the stencil, or tattoo, to be visible, you would have to damage the surrounding tissue enough that it either tans heavily or burns. By intentionally keeping the area sunscreen-free will do harm to the DNA in the skin cells.  Dr. Shah warns that “sitting out in the sun without the appropriate protection could not only cause life-long damage, but could also double the risk of skin cancer.”

Is there a safe way to get a sunburn tattoo? Dr. Shah has three kids, and he would rather see them get an actual tattoo than use this method. “There is no safe way to get a sunburn tattoo. That is a major misconception. There is no such thing as a safe tan. Kids are doing a lot of these sunburn tattoos. When you have young skin like that, it is especially vulnerable to ultraviolet rays. You are more likely to see signs of aging.”

A Safe Way: You can order all kinds of temporary designs online, ask for an airbrush design from a tattoo shop, and if you want the tan tattoo look, just put a sticker on your arm before rubbing on self-tanner.

TOP 5 HORMONAL CHANGES DURING AND AFTER PREGNANCY THAT YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT

July 16, 2019

One of the woman’s greatest joys and achievements in life is to give birth to a human being. There is no doubt that having a child is a wonderful experience. However, the majority of women didn’t know that pregnancy and giving birth changes you not only emotionally but also physically. Most often, you hear women complain about how they no longer look the same after they gave birth. The majority of the changes that happened during pregnancy are caused by hormones.

How Pregnancy And Childbirth Affects Hormones

Technically, a woman’s body produces a wide range of hormones during pregnancy to maintain it during pregnancy and sustain it during childbirth. The effects of these hormones have an impact on your body and in your everyday activities post-pregnancy. For example, Relaxin is a hormone released by the woman’s placenta, ovaries, and the uterine lining during the entire pregnancy period.

It prevents the contraction of muscles during the first two semesters of pregnancy. Relaxin also prevents premature delivery and ruptures the membranes around the fetus. It also opens and softens the cervix and the vagina and relaxes the ligaments of the pelvis to help during labor.

Prolactin is another hormone that stimulates the production of milk in the body and stays in the body as long as you breastfeed. This hormone could influence your immune system, metabolism, behavior, and fluids regulation. Prolactin is the obvious culprit of the water retention or edema and mood swings very common to women after they give birth.

Another hormone that plays a major role in breastfeeding and labor is Oxytocin. It stimulates the uterine muscle to contract and promotes the movement of milk into the breast. Most recent studies found that Oxytocin is crucial in one’s social behavior. It is responsible for anxiety, sexual arousal, trust, and recognition.

It is more popularly known as the love hormone and is responsible for the mother-infant bond. Most women feel unattractive and felt that childbirth took away their youthful appearance. While it is true that most of the weird changes in the woman’s body disappears after giving birth, some of them linger and are unfortunately for keeps.

Here are some of the things that may never go back to the way they were before pregnancy.

1. Stomach Skin Stretches Out And Becomes Saggy

For several months you carried another life inside your womb and as it grows inside, your skin will naturally stretch to go along with the expanding size. When you have given birth, the skin on the stomach has already stretched out too much that it has a lesser chance to return to its original appearance. It is like a plastic bag filled beyond its capacity that when you took everything out of the bag, it will not return to its original shape.

There is still a chance that your skin could bounce back after a year or two but the odds are against you and you have to fight against gravity and aging. This means to say that saggy skin is a permanent thing that you could not just remove by diet and exercise. So, even if you can remove the weight that you gained due to pregnancy, saggy skin, unfortunately, is not going away.

Most often, saggy skin is developed along with losing weight. Saggy skin is one of the major reasons why the procedure tummy tuck is popular among women who have had kids, says Dr. William Ross of Mommy Makeover.

2. Ptosis or Sagging Breasts

One of the most depressing effects of pregnancy on women is called Ptosis or sagging of the breasts. The problem is, once the breasts droop they will never stand firm again. The drooping is mainly caused by the stretching of the elastin and ligaments that ensure the fatty tissues are in their proper places, according to the 2008 Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

The bright side about this is that once you have had a baby, breastfeeding will not likely worsen breast sagging. The Annals of Plastic Surgery discovered that women who have been pregnant had more sagging breasts compared to those who had not. Breastfeeding, however, does not cause the worsened droopiness of the breasts like smoking status and weight gain do.

3. Stretch Mark On The Breasts And The Mid-Section

Striae, or stretch marks, are formed when the elastic fibers of your skin break. During pregnancy or when you gain weight, your body grows at a pace that your skin could not keep up with, which causes a stretch mark. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that 90 percent of women develop stretch marks starting in the seventh month of their pregnancy.

Just like saggy skin, striae are permanent but there is still a way that it could be removed depending on its location. Dr. William Ross, Mommy Makeover expert from Naples, FL, recommends a breast lift or a tummy tuck could give your body makeover that it deserves. Both of these procedures can also enhance the appearance of stretch marks that could not be removed.

4. Nipples And Areola Become Bigger And Darker

Long with your breast size, the size of your areolae and your nipples naturally increases. These changes in their shapes make it easier for the infant to latch on when they breastfeed. The change in the pigmentation of the nipples and areolas are caused by hormones. These hormones activate the melanocytes or the cells that produce pigment in the skin.

While the dark pigmentation will lighten over time, the size of your areola or nipples will stay the same despite that your breasts have returned to their original size. An areola reduction could be performed if you are too concerned about it.

5. Changes in the Skin

Pregnancy brings all types of skin changes. The linea nigra, for instance, becomes visible. This is the black line or the dark vertical line running over from the belly up to the pubic hair region at the time of pregnancy. Women could also develop melasma or the mask of pregnancy. These are brown blotches that color the face. Moles and freckles could also become darker during pregnancy.

WHAT REALLY WORKS TO PULVERIZE THOSE DIMPLED THIGHS?

July 5, 2019

“Cottage cheese,” “funky gravy.” “hail damage” - whatever you want to call it -  cellulite is never something we want to see on our bodies. That lumpy, dimple-looking flesh on our thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and hips is dreaded by women and men alike. Cellulite is caused by fat cells pushing up against a layer of skin, tethered down by connective fibers that attach to the muscles. When there is a buildup of fat, these fibers pull down while the fat pushes up, creating the appearance of uneven, bumpy skin. Cellulite is not a weight issue and can affect individuals of all shapes, sizes and ages.

While cellulite is not a serious medical condition, it can make someone feel insecure or embarrassed. However, you aren’t alone; between 80 to 90 percent of women will experience cellulite at some point in their lives. Some might start to notice cellulite as early as puberty. Dr. Gretchen Frieling is a board -certified Boston Area Dermatopathologist. She cuts out the clutter to define what really works in 2019 to eradicate cellulite, be it a temporary or permanent solution.

Are there at home creams that can provide temporary improvement?

“If you’re looking for an at-home treatment, topical creams are an effective way to diminish cellulite. However, they’re a long-term or complete “cure,” says Dr. Frieling, She adds, “The fat cells are still under there!  To maintain the results, you’ll have to apply the product every day. Use a moisturizing cream with ingredients that treat fatty tissues such as caffeine or retinol to minimize cellulite. To see results, you must apply the topical cream daily to improve cell circulation. Caffeine works as a diuretic, which can dehydrate the fat cells and change the water content, which can reduce the appearance of cellulite. While creams with at least 0.3 percent retinol work by thickening the outer layer of skin. It is essential to test these products on your skin before long-term use as some have shown to have adverse effects. Most creams can be found online and at any drugstore.”

What are the latest technologies to decrease Cellulite?

Acoustic wave therapy

Studies show that this can reduce the appearance of cellulite. Several treatment sessions are needed to see a reduction.

During one minimally invasive laser treatment called Cellulaze™, a tiny laser fiber is inserted beneath your skin. When the laser is fired, the laser energy breaks up the tough bands beneath the skin that cause us to see cellulite. This treatment can also thicken your skin, which is important. Skin often thins where cellulite forms. Thickening the skin can help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Bottom line: Cellulaze™ may reduce the appearance of cellulite. Patients see results that last a year or longer. More research is needed to know for sure how effective this laser can be.

Subcision

Called Cellfina™, this medical procedure involves your dermatologist inserting a needle just under the skin to break up the tough bands beneath the skin that cause us to see cellulite.

Bottom Line: Cellfina™ has been shown to reduce the skin dimpling that you see with cellulite. In a study of 232 patients, 99% of them said they were satisfied with the results. The results can last two years and possibly longer.

Vacuum-assisted precise tissue release

This also breaks up the tough bands that cause us to see cellulite. During this procedure, your practitioner will use a device that contains small blades to cut the tough bands. After the bands are cut, the tissue moves upward to fill out and eliminate the dimpled skin.

Bottom line: This may be an effective treatment for reducing cellulite. A small study shows that many patients who received this treatment had less cellulite for up to 3 years. It’s too soon to tell, but the results may last even longer.

Radiofrequency

This is a type of treatment that heats the cellulite. One FDA-approved device combines radiofrequency with a laser, suction, and massage to target cellulite.

Bottom line: Recent studies suggest some patients see a little less cellulite. This result, however, is short-lived and several treatments are needed to see this minor change.

After treatment, bruises are common. These fade with time.

Are there lifestyle exercise or diet changes that will reduce cellulite?

AVOID SUGAR

Dr. Frieling explains, “Your diet may be playing a significant role in the amount of cellulite you have, so it’s important always to have a well-balanced diet. One of the biggest culprits for causing cellulite are sugary sweet snacks and processed foods. Sugar is stored in our fat cells, and having too much will cause them to expand, thus creating the appearance of cellulite. The same goes for foods with high sodium intake, which cause bloating and water retention, making cellulite more noticeable. Other foods to avoid are cheese, soda, deli meat, fried food, and white bread.”

EXERCISE REGULARLY
If you’re struggling to get rid of those stubborn dimples, it’s time to get up and get moving. “While it isn’t exactly the cure for cellulite,” says Dr. Frieling, she adds that “regular exercise will help in its prevention by strengthening the muscles underneath the fat in your butt, thighs, and hips. Squats and lunges, as well as a 45-minute walk, are great exercises that target the leg muscles and make the skin look more even.”

STOP SMOKING
Smoking reduces the amount of blood that flows to your skin, causing the skin to become thinner and saggier. While it is a difficult habit to kick, the cellulite on your legs, arms, and butt will be less visible.

REDUCE YOUR ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
“Elimination or significantly reducing the amount of alcohol you consume may aid in decreasing the toxins that accumulate underneath our fat cells. Alcohol also has high amounts of sugar, which will only make the cellulite more noticeable,” says Dr. Frieling.

STAY HYDRATED
This probably won’t be the first time you’ve been told to drink more water, but it does help! Dr. Frieling explains that “By drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water every day, you’re helping to remove the toxins stored underneath the layer of fat which cause our skin to look lumpy. Staying hydrated also helps with the overall health of your skin, making it appear more plump and full”.

FAKE IT!

If you have fair skin, a self-tanner may help. Dimpled areas are less noticeable on darker skin. Start with a gentle body scrub, then apply a self-tanning lotion to cellulite areas only. Next spritz your entire body with a tanning spray. Pass on a real tan. It'll damage your skin and make cellulite look worse.

MORE THAN 200,000 TEENS HAD PLASTIC SURGERY LAST YEAR: AND THE CULPRIT IS ... SOCIAL MEDIA

July 2, 2019

For many years now, a popular high school graduation gift has been a nose job or otoplasty (ear pinning). In more recent times, that evolved into breast implants. Since the inception of Instagram in 2010, plastic surgery has seen an enormous rise in teens requesting lip fillers, Botox, and buttock augmentation.  Teens seeking to morph into someone else is fueled by studies that show that “The average millennial takes over 25,000 selfies in his or her lifetime, which is astronomical and one of the major reasons for the self-esteem issues in this age group.” More than 40% of surgeons in a recent American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery survey said looking better in selfies on Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook was an incentive for patients of all ages undergoing surgery.  Dr. Manish Shah is a Denver board certified plastic surgeon. He wants to help teens, and parents of teens navigate this world of teens and plastic surgery to discuss what is appropriate and at what age in a culture where it can seem as if everyone is having something done.  He understands this quandary as he is not only a plastic surgeon but a father of 3 teenagers.

Breast reduction

Some teens suffer from Juvenile Breast Hypertrophy. This often results in teasing, name calling, difficulty with exercise and clothing selection. It is reasonable to perform breast reduction surgery on these girls after the age of 16. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and the breast tissue is sent off for pathological evaluation. Recovery tends to be less than two weeks with minimal overall risks.

Otoplasty (ear pinning)

Kids get teased for having "Dumbo ears" quite routinely. We become aware of the "other" in our lives after the age of 6. Otoplasty can be done at any age after 6. It is a safe surgery that can be easily performed in the office under local anesthesia.

Rhinoplasty

There are few things a teen can do to hide a nose that they are not happy with or get teased about. Teens can have rhinoplasty surgery, but only after their faces have completed growing. For girls that can be as young as 14 years old, and for boys, it is typically around 17 years old. Often, teens have additional problems with nasal obstruction from trauma as kids. This can be fixed at the same time as the cosmetic surgery. Insurance will often cover the medical portion of the surgery, but the cosmetic portion is usually an out of the pocket expense.

Liposuction

Liposuction for teens is not a common procedure. For most teens, they can achieve healthy bodies via proper diet and exercise. Frankly, this is better for them. After 15 years of practice, I can say that I have never performed liposuction on anyone younger than 18 years old.

Butt Implants-

Butt implants are not a procedure that teens have performed. I reserve this procedure for patients older than 22 years old who have failed exercise as a method for gluteal muscle enlargement and are not candidates for a fat transfer to the butt (Brazilian Butt Lift).

Breast Implants-

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends that breast implants, especially silicone implants, not be used in patients less than 22 years of age. This is primarily for reasons of patient maturity and possible early family planning. In my practice this has been the case typically; however, I have placed silicone implants in patients as young as 18 years of age because they were financially independent, mature, and already had children of their own.

Botox in the Forehead and Crow’s Feet

With today's access to technology, everyone is squinting to look at tiny screens. Over time, this increases complaints of eyestrain, headaches, and wrinkles. I think neurotoxin can be injected for patients as early as 18 years old, and earlier if treating for migraines. I started injecting my youngest daughter when she was 16 years old because of migraines. The treatment has helped her tremendously.

Chin Implant

Chin implant surgery can be performed in teens after their faces have finished growing. It is a procedure that is often combined with rhinoplasty, and/or chin liposuction to create a better jawline in those whose jaws are underdeveloped. If a patient is not a candidate for jaw surgery by their dental surgeons, they often seek out plastic surgeons for this combination of procedures.

Lip Fillers-

Lip fillers are not really something I perform in those younger than 18 years old. There isn't a significant justification for lip augmentation in this population. After they turn 18 years old and are legally adults, then I have no problem injecting filler as the risks are better understood at this age.

Lasers

Lasers for teens are common in two particular scenarios: laser resurfacing for acne scar reduction and laser hair removal. Since teenage acne is ubiquitous, scarring is the big problem afterward. Once teens get their acne under control with the help of a dermatologist, they can undergo laser treatment to soften the scars and reduce pigment. When excess facial or body hair is a source of emotional distress for a teen, laser hair removal treatments can be used to reduce the problem. Both procedures can be performed after the age of 16 years old with parental support and consent.

Filler in the Cheeks-

I don't recommend that teens get fillers unless it is to balance off major facial asymmetries.

What makes some teens ready for cosmetic surgery and why would you turn away others?

For a teen to be ready for cosmetic surgery, it is necessary that they have family support, both emotionally and financially. They need to display a level of maturity that shows that they have done their research and understand the pros and cons of having a particular procedure. When I turn a teen away, it is most often because they clearly don't exhibit a level of maturity, understanding, and rationality necessary to make a good decision for themselves. Their ability to consent to treatment is impaired. Often, there is a power struggle between the teen and the parent that clues me into the fact that they are not ready for surgery.

Are there specific procedures you just won't’ do under a certain chronological age, and if so, which procedures are they?

Honestly, most of the body procedures are off limits in my practice until the patient is at least 18 years old. I will perform breast surgery on patients with congenital breast deformities before the age of 22 years old. However, routine cosmetic breast surgery can wait until the patients are more mature. Outside of rhinoplasty and chin implant surgery, most facial procedures aren't appropriate before a patient is in their twenties.

In summary, Dr. Shah feels strongly that, “Parents need to have frequent conversations with teens who seem obsessed with selfies and plastic surgery. Adolescents must understand that their idols like Gigi and Bella Hadid, The Kardashians, Cardi B, and others make their living off their face and bodies. They represent only 1 % of the population.  Parents must stress that while looks do count, so too do brains, ambition, personality, good choices, and talent. In general, the bulk of cosmetic surgery should be reserved for adults who are fully actualized people and want to make tweaks with realistic expectations and motives.”

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW WITH THE LAURUS PROJECT

June 18, 2019

Women's Health Awareness month takes place in May. We took some time to chat with CEO and Founder, Teresa Lawsky of The Laurus Project which focuses on funding research projects that assist in prevention as well as curing breast cancer. We delved into finding out about a number of projects and goals of this group, looking at the importance of understanding their focus on action as opposed to merely having an awareness of breast cancer, as well as creating a community of Thrivers that continue to share their empowering and uplifting message.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Prior to launching the Laurus Project, tell us about your background.

TERESA LAWSKY: I served as a nurse clinician specializing in breast cancer for about 18 years. I practiced at major institutions in NYC and leading hospitals in Southern California. During that period of time, I really got an up close experience to the human condition that occurs when women and some men are diagnosed with breast cancer.

AM: Due to your experience, what led you to creating the Laurus Project and tell us about what the aims are for the organization.

TL: I was in my office and I said to my assistant, “how many more women have to walk through this door before we do something about it?” Incidents of breast cancer remain high in the US with about 1 in 8 women diagnosed in their lifetime and although we are doing a lot of work as it related to awareness, I really felt that there was a gap as it relates to prevention. So one of the goals that we have at the Laurus Project is to help prevent the onset of disease in women, new diagnosis and then preventing recurrences in women that have had past diagnoses.

So this is a lifelong challenge for women to stay cancer free and that is something that we want to help with.

AM: When did you launch this and what is your role as a CEO and a Founder?

TL: It was founded in 2015 and we launched in 2016. I really am very involved in the strategy and making sure that our programs and grants really fulfill our mission and provide action for those affected by the disease. That’s something that I feel very strongly about. I work very closely with researchers that we support. It’s a day to day thing and I stay very tight and close with it. I have my hand in a lot of what we are doing.

AM: What are some of the human trials and research that you support?

TL: In order to advance cutting edge therapy and new therapy treatment to people who desperately and frankly need it, human trials are necessary for FDA approval. To expedite it from the lab to a human trial and then to a health care setting, this is required. So there are sometimes for various reasons a gap in funding of research in human trials. So that is what we are looking to fill. That’s a way for us to expedite it into the hands of people who need it. That’s part of the reason that we are so involved on that side.

AM: So what research are you working on that you can share with us?

TL: One of the trials that we are participating on for funding that I am really excited about is diet related. It is a fasting mimicking diet based on the research of Dr. Valter Longo. It’s a trial that is looking at reducing or preventing breast cancer in women that are deemed high risk. This is an ongoing clinical trial and we are participating in funding that. I think that in a couple of years, we will even have some data come out of that that should be pretty exciting! That is something that we are working on that we are really excited about.

53830242_1976962582432509_5263405167671246848_o.jpg

AM: What is the process for a researcher to present a project to you and how does The Laurus Project go about deciding what is of interest for them to fund?

TL: We really have our finger on the pulse in terms of what is going on in the medical community. We work hand in hand with leading institutions in that space. A lot of it crosses over into longevity as it relates to prevention and some in other areas. Again, we work hand in hand with leading institutions who have researchers that are doing cutting edge work. We identify the gap and make sure it is aligned and we have an amazing medical advisory board and then we make a decision about what we want to fund in order to get it in the hands of women who need it.

AM: One of the things on the website that we were looking at was Integrative Therapy and how does that work in terms of while they are getting their treatment as well as post treatment?

TL: Integrative Therapy is kind of the healing approach that takes into account every aspect of a person’s health. So that is mind, body, emotional and social. All of those things that impact a person and it really pairs with standard of care therapy in order to advance a better solution or state for that person.

So an example would be the use of a mindfulness or meditation as it relates to stress and even possible inflammation. Also the use of acupuncture as it relates to side effects of treatment. Many women who get diagnosed, suffer from Post Traumatic Stress disorder. There are different things that we can utilize in order to support them and help them with those side effects. It’s really taking into account the whole person and raising the standard of care so that we’re looking at all of that. It really impacts a person’s health overall. So even when we look at our mission and our goal in prevention and in risk reduction, prevention of recurrence in survivors. We really want to elevate that standard in our point of view.

AM: Many people wonder why when we talk about Breast Cancer, that we talk about prevention and remission. Why isn’t there a cure for this disease with all of the technology that we have at our disposal?

TL: I think that with the focus on treatment, that that’s something that’s very important and there has been a lot of energy and funding and looking at that. What’s happened is that there has been kind of a gap and that’s why we exist for the recovery period. When you look at a woman that has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has gone through treatment in terms of their experience, often their anxiety level and all of these things that relate to health escalates when treatment ends. So at The Laurus Project, we really understand that healing continues after breast cancer treatment ends. In some cases, women are on maintenance medication that causes other side effects that they really need assistance with, in order to remain on the medication. We want to help increase compliance so that they can reap the benefits of the medications that are available to them.

As a health care professional in the field, I really identify gaps and your question is right on and it’s exactly why we are here. There are Survivorship Programs that exist in larger cancer centers and hospitals – but not all geographic areas have them. Certainly there are a lot of women that feel that returning to the facility where they received treatment – that can trigger a lot of feelings and emotions. We really want to help women move past that into Thrivership and into wellness. Because nothing changes if nothing changes. Our goal is to really help them by supporting programs that are good and offering them solutions. We recently launched a new program at Laurus which will help women in areas where that is not available.

AM: Tell us more about Thrive Tribe which is a part of the The Laurus Project.

TL: The Laurus Project’s Thrive Tribes is really a community of women who come together and it's something that we launched to take care of their help and we are helping them in doing that. These tribes exist in communities and they’re led by either a breast cancer Thriver, health care professional or a high risk woman and they are the connection to their community and women in their community to access our education and programs and resources. So we provide education as it relates to risk reduction that’s evidence based, up to date science, and suggest and activity that women engage with once a month.

As an example if we just go back to mindfulness and meditation, we’ll provide monthly email/digital information related to what science really says about mindfulness and meditation. It focuses on why they may benefit and partner that with a scheduled guided meditation. Women are receiving information and we’re weeding through all the stuff that is out there by providing them with solid evidence based education that is specific to their disease. This is health promoting and then giving them access as a way to take action. They’re coming together as a community and really being in power to take control of their health – rather than getting home and finishing their treatment and getting three recommendations and heading to the internet trying to weed through and see what they can do. We want to help them do that in a safe and inspiring environment.

AM: We know that a number of Breast Cancer organizations use the term awareness and pink for the cause. What was the decision behind using the color orange and the term action?

TL: At Laurus, we’re really about Breast Cancer Action. I think that it’s important for women to know and understand that there are things that women can do to be in control of their health. It’s a matter of driving that message and it’s something that they can engage with. And by the way, there are win wins with that. So sometimes, even the idea of Breast Cancer Awareness makes an individual feel like there is really nothing that they can do. They know the problem is there, that it happened – but what can they do about it and that’s what we’re about. That’s why we work with leading institutions and researchers and why we fund and support programs as well as development programs to help women do that. This way they can live their best life and take that action.

That’s in fact why we are orange and not pink. That really resembles the movement from awareness to action. It’s a very hopeful movement that incorporates wellness and women are very excited about it. I see the reaction that women have when they engage with us. It’s very empowering and it’s really a new hope. One of the women who is leading a tribe in Laguna Beach, she stated crying and said, “this is what I have been looking for.” So I think that we really are filling a gap and that we are filling a need. I’m really excited about it and I’m excited about brands and supporters and people like you that are interested in what we are doing because it’s a healing message that’s hopeful. On that front I will say that I like Breast Cancer Action. Awareness is great, but lets take it to the next level.

AM: We like the use of the word action! A number of organizations have funds that go towards raising money for various treatments and research for Breast Cancer. Do you have and brands or products where a portion of the proceeds go to this cause?

TL: We do partner with brands and have partnered with those that are mission aligned in different ways. We have an exciting event coming up with Alice & Olivia. That is going to be a really fun event and it’s a very empowering brand. We love that side of it as it’s uplifting and fashion forward. We also partner with other wellness brands, families and companies that believe in what we are doing.

AM: How does one go about creating their own Thrive Tribe community?

TL: Thank you for asking that! They can visit our website at The Laurus Project.com, click on Thrive Tribe and take this beautiful empowering pledge and commitment to selfcare. If they don’t see their city or state, they can scroll down to become a leader which we really want to encourage women to do. That is then reviewed and we can launch them in their community. We’re hoping to launch Thrive Tribes in communities all across the US and we’re really excited about it. I think that it puts information directly into their hands and partners it with action. Of course, this is education and we always advise women to take it to their medical team and make sure that it’s right for them. It’s evidence based and taking them to wellness and Thrivership.

AM: We love hearing about this community. With us coming up on the back half of the year, are there goals that the Laurus Project has in terms of a goal perspective? What events or special projects should we keep an eye out for that the Laurus Project has going on?

TL: We have a really fun annual event that is a Dance to Thrive party that is held each year in October. We started it last year in NYC and we held it at 1Oak and had an amazing turnout. It’s an uplifting let go event and a lot of fun. It’s something that you should keep an eye out for. As far as projects that we are working on, there are a number of projects that we are doing in conjunction with other nonprofits in order to advance solutions at a larger scale as it relates to integrative therapy which is also really exciting.

3 HEALTH FOOD TRENDS TAKING OVER THE WORLD OF GASTRONOMY

June 17, 2019

‘Health’ and ‘gastronomy’ used to be mutually exclusive concepts, but if one major trend has marked the new millennium, it is the passion for healthy, Mediterranean-style delights made with free range meat, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and of course, Omega-3 essential fatty acids. Such is the passion for colorful ‘slow food’ dishes that Business Insider recently heralded the big boom in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine across the U.S. Diners want flavor, but they don’t want it at the expense of an expanding waistline. Check out three newer health food trends that will ensure that you look as good on the outside as you feel on the inside.

Grazing Tables

If you thought that grazing and sticking to a healthy diet were impossible, think again. It’s all about what you choose to serve on your trays, and this year, the spotlight is on organic, zero-kilometre fare that can be shared in a group. Think an ample-sized tray of mezze, comprising various MiddleEastern delights such as kefta, chicken skewers, kebby, labne, hummus, and taboule. Note that the trays contain some fried items, but also fresh salads made with nutrient-packed ingredients like parsley and freshly chopped seasonal tomatoes. Grazing tables are the perfect opportunity to serve local products. Shared cheese platters, Mediterranean salad bars, or Middle Eastern bites go well with both wine and craft beer. As noted by Arizona restaurateur Ryan Hibbert, the key to keeping a grazing table exciting is to surprise your guests with homegrown delicacies they may not have known existed.

Sea-Sourced Snacks

Spanish celebrity Chef Ángel León (whose restaurant in the Coastal area of Cadiz boasts no fewer than three Michelin stars) is largely responsible for major discoveries of the potential of seaweed. The Chef has not only discovered new culinary species of plankton and algae, but also managed to incorporate them into traditional spanish dishes. How does a plankton paella with ali-oli tartar sound, for instance? The passion for seaweed is taking over the U.S. as well, with Whole Foods having recently announced that it would have many more sea-based snacks (including vegetarian tuna and seaweed butter!) Seaweed not only lends itself to different textures and food types, but is also super rich in vitamins and nutrients like iodine and tyrosine (which support thyroid function). Seaweed also contains a plethora of antioxidants, which help fight free radicals that age you prematurely and cause disease.

Creative Ice-Cream

It’s summer, and that means one thing: everyone’s screaming for ice-cream! Forget about flavors previously considered nouvelle, though. Salty caramel, watermelon and Kinder Surprise take a backseat. America is ready to tuck into newer varieties such as avocado, hummus, and of course, yuzu - the cumquat-like fruit used so often in Japanese cuisine and cocktails. There will also be more refined citrus flavors available, including tangerine and blood orange. The plethora of new combinations is very much in line with other top trends. Diners who dream of traveling the world can now do so, at least gastronomically. They can also rest assured that what they are consuming contains much more than just sugar and dairy. Rather, ingredients such as olive oil will be used to add extra creaminess while boosting your Omega-3 intake.

Light grazing, seaweed delights, and power-packed fruit and veggie ice-creams are just a few new food trends that pay respect to health as much as to flavor. Simplicity and a passion for Mediterranean-style munching are in, as is the penchant for world flavors that differ subtly from local fare. Finally, zero kilometre cuisine continues to hold sway, which is very much in line with renewed interest in healthy, organic cuisine that hasn’t traveled many miles to make it to your table.

LET'S CHECK IN ON OUR MENTAL HEALTH WITH DR. HAFEEZ

June 3, 2019

May is known as Mental Health Awareness month. We took some time to delve into how one define's mental health and what are some of the symptoms that someone may have. Dr. Sanam Hafeez shares what this involves.

ATHLEISURE MAG: When people use the term, Mental Health what does that mean?

DR. SANAM HAFEEZ: The dictionary defines it as: “A person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.” To give it broader strokes, the term mental health is akin to mental fitness. It means, how “stable” is a person in their head? Do they have what would be considered normal reactions to everyday disappoints or situations? Can they manage anger? Can they make and maintain relationships? Do they engage in self destructive behavior? Are they violent? Do they abuse drugs or alcohol? Do they have post-traumatic stress or obsessive compulsive disorder? Do they have eating disorders?

AM: What is the importance of Mental Health Awareness month in May?

DR. SH: There is less of a stigma attached to forms of mental illness than there used to be. Even Princes Harry and William have taken this up as one of their philanthropic causes. There is a saying within mental health, and that is: “Your secrets keep you sick.” The more that celebrities such as Demi Lovato admit to battling some form of mental illness, the more everyday people have the strength to come forward and seek help. We have empathy (as we should) for people stricken with Cancer, Aids, Parkinson’s , etc. we must have the same understanding for people who carry the burden of depression, anxiety, addiction or other forms of mental illness. People do not need to suffer in silence, as many of these conditions can be treated with medication and therapy.

AM: In the last few years, there seems to be a focus on providing education and acknowledging the fact that taking care of ourselves within this space is just as important as a number of other things we do from day to day – why do you think that right now that this is something that we’re hearing a lot more about in the media, social media, personalities etc?

DR. SH: We live in a world where there is more openness and honesty than that of our parent’s generation. Our parents were taught not to “air their dirty laundry in public.” For all of the negatives that have been said about social media, and some are true, it has brought about forums that provide support for people. For example, one can find multiple support groups on Facebook for alcoholics in recovery, overeaters, compulsive gamblers, anxiety, anorexics, etc. Sometimes it takes just one influencer or celebrity to be the brave one and lead the way, and then more follow. For example, Dan Harris was a Good Morning America Anchor when he had a panic attack live on air. It terrified him, but he spoke candidly about it and went on to write a book “10% Happier: How I Tamed The Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, And Found Self-Help That Actually Works.” Elizabeth Vargas, is a longtime anchor on ABC and host of 20/20. She had a well publicized battle with alcohol and has sat down for many interviews to discuss it. Most recently, TV host Wendy Williams admitted to a relapse with Cocaine and to staying in a sober living facility. Notable figures like these have made conversations about mental illness or addiction more acceptable and commonplace. They have brought it out of the closet and shown that anyone can be susceptible regardless of race, education, or social status.

AM: What are signs that one might be suffering from mental health whether we’re thinking about ourselves or someone we know?

DR. SH:

  • Loss of interest in things/people that that once enjoyed

  • Lack of self care

  • Sleeping too much or too little

  • Major decrease or increase in appetite

  • Isolating

  • Mood Swings

  • Giving away prized possessions

  • Difficulty perceiving reality (delusions or hallucinations, in which a person experiences and senses things that don't exist in objective reality)

  • Inability to perceive changes in one’s own feelings, behavior or personality (”lack of insight” or anosognosia)

  • Abuse of substances like alcohol or drugs

  • Multiple physical ailments without obvious causes (such as headaches, stomach aches, vague and ongoing aches and pains)

  • Thinking about suicide

AM: Many people think that within the topic of mental health that this is focused on those suffering from Bipolar, Schizophrenia or depression; however, what other conditions may follow under this area?

DR. SH: People can simply be situationally depressed. Situational depression means that a person is typically an even-keeled person who now finds themselves in a very distressing situation such as the loss of a child, parent or spouse. Perhaps their home has been foreclosed or they have been diagnosed with a serious form of cancer. These are all very mentally challenging situations and the person facing them will likely need help from a mental health professional to learn skills to cope and have a sympathetic unbiased ear to listen.

AM: What risks are involved when we don’t check in with how we are doing when it comes to mental health awareness?

DR. SH: Small problems can turn into big issues whether it is marriage, substance abuse, eating disorders, anger issues, depression, etc. You know yourself better than anyone else. If something feels “off” and your habits change your social life changes, your motivation is lacking, take a step back and asses what is going on. Never be ashamed to reach out for help. There is no such thing as doing it “too soon.”

AM: In living a life that is in constant motion, what are things that we can do whether it falls into self-care or seeking professional help etc. that should be placed into our routine to ensure that we have good mental health?

DR. SH:

  • Do your best not to overschedule yourself

  • Learn to say no to people or commitments that will overwhelm you

  • Make time for physical exercise

  • Eat a a balanced diet and make the most of the food you eat to nourish you and fuel your body

  • Decide who and what are the priorities in your life. Eliminate extraneous people and places.

  • Get rid of toxic people

  • If your job is making you miserable and you can quit for financial reasons, do your best to seek a new position while you are still employed

  • If you are in a verbally or physically abusive relationship get out of it

AM: Are there websites/apps that you feel are beneficial as a better way to establish proper mental health?

DR. SH: Calm focuses on the four key areas of meditation, breathing, sleep, and relaxation, with the aim of bringing joy, clarity, and peace to your daily life.

Headspace uses mindfulness and meditation to help you perform at your best each day. The app's mission is to provide you with the essential tools to achieve a happier, healthier life.

Moodnotes is a thought journal and mood diary. The app can be used to capture your feelings and improve your thinking habits through the implementation of CBT and positive psychology.

Moodpath is your pocket-sized mental health companion. Whether you are facing a rough patch or have concerns about your mental health, the app's goal is to support you through the difficult times and guide you out the other side.

AM: If there is anything that we should keep in mind when it comes to an area that we need to keep in mind regarding mental health.

DR. SH: Social media can be your best friend or your worst enemy depending on how you use it. If you are using it to join networking groups, support groups, or grow your business that’s constructive. If you are stalking an ex, or obsessing over how your selfies look and re-touching them for hours, that is not constructive. If you are spending your time comparing your life to others you know this can lead to depression. Remember, social media is a very edited and curated version of people’s lives and it is the rare person who shows their life warts and all. So get off your phone and live your best life!

NEW YORK GASTROENTEROLOGIST SHARES 7 WAYS TO BEAT THOSE SUGAR CRAVINGS

May 25, 2019

Sugar cravings are a formidable opponent to anyone trying to stay on a nutritious path. Sugar cravings can attack in the middle of the day or night, and it takes the will power of a comic book hero to say no to such temptation. But what if we can identify and address the underlying reason why we feel such a need for sugar? New York internist and gastroenterologist, Dr. Niket Sonpal who is also a faculty member at Touro College of Medicine says,  “If more people could learn to pinpoint the reasons why they experience sugar cravings they would have better tools to avoid breaking their nutritional goals.”

Here are Dr. Sonpal’s 7 Ways to Conquer Sugar Cravings

Drink water; you might be dehydrated.

Many people mistake thirst for sugar cravings. “We know that we want something fresh and cold and we usually identify that with sugary drinks,” says Dr. Sonpal. “When our bodies have a deficiency in fluids, it can’t efficiently breakdown glycogen, and this causes the urge to consume something sugary. In reality, what you need to do first is drink water and observe how you feel,” he explains.

Try to Decrease Your Sugar Intake Gradually

Scans have shown that sugar fuels every cell in the brain.  “Our bodies view sugar as a reward. But too much of a good thing is not good at all in this case. By partaking in overconsumption of sugar you are reinforcing your body’s need for that reward, essentially becoming addicted to it,” explains Dr. Sonpal. But like many addictions, it is not a reasonable or sustainable strategy to quit cold turkey. If you feel as though you are out of control or moody without your first soft drink of the day or until you have a piece of chocolate, you need to consider slowly draining your system from that need for sugar.

Rethink social habits that drive you towards sugar

Many of us have social rituals during our day that help us destress amidst countless tasks and meetings. “If you have a standing ritual with a friend or coworker of eating a piece of cake after lunch every day or running to the coffee shop on the corner to get the most sugary caffeinated iced drink you can find, rethink those social behaviors,” says Dr. Sonpal. Try to put something else in place that is healthy but rewarding.

Evaluate your protein intake

Many famous diet plans like Paleo, Vegetarian, and Keto seek to reduce sugars in your food. Sometimes a good way to kick your sugar cravings to the curb is having some good ole’ fashion protein. “Protein reduces the speed with which your body processes sugars and in turn helps you need lower amounts to experience that reward. Eggs, black beans, broccoli, and chicken are really healthy ways to get that protein in to quench that yearn for sugar,” suggests Dr. Sonpal.

If push comes to shove, pick fruit

There will be times when your craving for sugar will be exacerbated by the stress of the day or however many days you’ve gone without consuming it. You may feel like you can have a cheat day. According to Dr. Sonpal, “Your best response to a worsening need for sugar is to eat a piece of fruit. If you get to a point where you feel frustrated, instead of eating processed sugar, eat fruit. Fruits are sweet and have natural sugar that can address your sweet tooth without throwing out your entire effort,” says the NYC gastroenterologist. With the fruit, you will get added vitamins and fiber.

Fiber is your friend

Fiber helps clean out your system, and it is processed more slowly by the body. Fiber helps you feel fuller for longer effectively reducing your craving for mid-meal snacks. “Many people will be very deliberate with their decision to reduce sugar in their meals but will ultimately cave in when their body needs a snack because a lot of the snacks we have in our pantry have sugar in them. Fiber and lots of water would help you stay full for longer periods,” Says Dr. Sonpal.

Observe your consumption of starch

Starches like white rice, white bread, pasta are complex carbs that the body process as simple carbs. They end up affecting the sugar levels in your body and feeding into your need for sugar as fuel for brain activity and energy. If you have cut out processed sugars but continue to eat an abundance of starches, then your next step is to progressively reduce your consumption of those foods as well to clean your system of the need for sugars.
