SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | SMOOTH SKIN

May 10, 2018

Skin is always an essential no matter the season, and this time of year makes us think even more so about soft, smooth and hair free skin. We chatted with Carrie LaMarca, Celebrity MUA and Skincare Expert who has worked with a number of celebrities from Ashley Graham, Bethenny Frankel, Emily Ratajkowski, Marcus Samulesson, Millie Bobby Brown, Olivia Culpo, Wolf Blitzer and Ronda Rousey. We wanted to know what we could do to find out how we can meet our goals in this manner as well as how to get that summer glow with a little help with cosmetics.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Smooth skin is an essential, what are your recommendations for your face to keep the little peach fuzz that we get away?

CARRIE LAMARCA: When I have a new model or celebrity in my chair, one of the first things I do is analyze their skin. If there is any peach fuzz I quickly remove it using my clio beautytrim personal hair trimmer. It is so quick and easy to use and doesn't irritate the skin at all. Removing that excess peach fuzz is key so that skincare and makeup go on smoothly and evenly.

AM: For the face, what are your recommendations for minimal makeup looks that appear as if its makeup-free but give you a sun-kissed glowing look for Spring and Summer?

CL: I love using Glossier's stretch concealer only in the places that need coverage and kind of buff it out to blend with your natural skin. Next, I use a cream bronzer like Benefit Hoola Creme Contour stick. Cremes melt into skin and look more natural, rather than powders, which tend to sit on top of the skin. If you do use a powder, make sure to use a heavy moisturizer or face oil under to help it look more natural. Most importantly though, is that you blend!

AM: As we sleep at night, what moisturizers should we focus on that work on our skin at this time?

CL: Serum is your hero at night! Depending on what you are looking to correct, will help you pick a serum to use. For example, Retinol is great for fine lines, while Vitamin C works for evening skin tone. And then, moisturizer is important to layer on top of the serum. It will seal everything in, while hydrating and plumping your skin as you sleep. One with Hyaluronic Acid is great!

AM: With swimsuits being in our very near future, what is a routine that we can do for our bikini line and legs to ensure soft skin and of course - hair free!

CL: The biggest thing you can do to start getting your bikini line ready is exfoliate! That is step one before hair removal. For a smooth bikini line, I love using the clio bikini trimmer. Because it’s an electric trimmer, it’s so much more gentle on the skin and will help prevent any irritation or ingrown hairs. The best part is that you can use it wet or dry, making it perfect to throw in your beach bag for on-the-go touch-ups!

AM: Post hair removal, what should we add to our routine from apparel, beauty products etc?

CL: Right after shaving your legs and bikini line you just want to make sure to wear breathable cotton clothing and underwear to allow your skin to heal. And always moisturize your skin to prevent any drying out that shaving can cause.

AM: To get a glow all over, what beauty products should we use and how should it be applied?

CL: I absolutely love all of the St. Tropez tanning products. They give such a great natural color and don't have the strange odor that most do. Just make sure to exfoliate and moisturize before applying. And remember that less is more when it comes to self-tanner. Definitely, wait a day or two before applying another layer because the tan usually develops more after 24 hours.

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | CLEANSING

April 17, 2018

Whether you're a cleanse queen or are new to the world of cleansing - this time of year makes us think about incorporating this into our routine! This month's Something You Should Know focuses on questions we have about doing your next cleanse. We enjoyed Raw Generation's range of flavors and sat down with Jessica Rosen to find out about their brand as well as what we need to know.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us about the brand Raw Generation.

JESSICA ROSEN: When I completed graduate school and was starting my career a little over a decade ago, I was exhausted, sick all the time, and overweight. In 2010, I lost both of my grandmothers to cancer within six months of each other. The abruptness of this loss changed my outlook on what it means to truly be healthy.

I vowed to educate myself on nutrition so that I could help my loved ones lead long and healthy lives from then on. I began researching the role foods play in a person’s health, including how what you eat affects your weight, and I enrolled at The Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a Certified Holistic Health Coach. While enrolled, I personally tested different ways of eating and found that a diet emphasizing raw foods, and more specifically raw juice, was the key to a healthier body, including weight loss. Weight loss is a major component, not only of how you feel about yourself, but how healthy you are.

My father and I started developing Raw Generation early in 2012 because we saw a need for convenient foods that are truly healthy. We believe lack of time, money, or convenience, shouldn't be an excuse not to feed your body what it needs to thrive. My initial goal was only to help myself and my family, but since the beginning of 2012, I've expanded my goals to helping everyone.

Raw Generation's cleanses, juices, soups, and smoothies were designed for people who want to lose weight in a healthy way without counting calories, keeping track of points, or spending hours in the kitchen. Using whole fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and spices, without any preservatives, chemicals, and artificial ingredients Raw Generation is creating the highest quality products to help anyone lose weight, have more energy, feel better, and be healthier.-

AM: How important is including a cleanse in your diet?

JR: At a minimum, I aim to cleanse once every three months. From time to time it is good to give your body a rest from the stresses of everyday life. Juice cleansing is a good way to:

Give your digestive system a break so your body can heal and repair itself quickly

Feed yourself pure nutrition that your body can absorb immediately

Help your liver and kidneys detoxify your body

Give your body what it needs to slim down and have more energy

AM: What happens during a cleanse and why should you do it?

JR: Toxic build-up is often the cause of weight gain and disease in our bodies. Dietary cleansing draws out these toxins, allowing for inner healing and a healthier, slimmer you. Cleansing approaches the body from a fundamentally different perspective than calorie-restricted diets. Instead of counting calories and eating less, a proper cleanse is comprised of eating nutritionally abundant foods so that the body can purge toxins and wastes that accumulate in organs and weigh us down.

Cleansing is a prime way to jump-start a healthy program or a tremendous way to boost an existing healthy program. No matter which type you choose, you will see very real benefits in your body, from weight loss to clearer skin to more energy to better sleep.

AM: How can someone cleanse in a healthy way?

JR: Ideally, cleanses should be done at a time when there is minimal stress and physical demands. Your body will be hard at work detoxifying, and so it’s best if you are able to rest and take it easy throughout. However, if you have an athletic, active lifestyle, you can still do a cleanse! The key is, you should be sure that your daily caloric intake is adequate and that your cleanse contains a source of plant-based protein to support your body’s demands.

It’s also essential that you ease into a cleanse so that it is not a shock to your system (and you avoid unpleasant detox symptoms). In the days prior, you should eat lots of whole, plant-based foods,  avoid dairy, grains, fried or processed foods, sweets, artificial creamers & sweeteners, soda, & alcohol, and drink LOTS of water.

Cleansing is NOT fasting.

An ideal cleanse should involve adequate caloric intake to sustain regular daily functioning, while at the same time, encouraging the body to eliminate toxic waste. This can be done in three different ways, each with varying levels of difficulty - juice cleansing, smoothie cleansing, or an all raw food cleanse (that also includes the juices and the smoothies).

Various Ways to Cleanse Your Body:

Juice cleansing is traditionally done for a shorter duration of time and promotes fuller cleansing at a quicker rate, while still being nutritionally sound if juice from leafy greens are a significant portion of the cleanse.

Smoothie cleansing is usually easier to sustain for a longer period of time, and also promotes full cleansing, just at a slightly slower rate. As long as dark, leafy greens are included in a good portion of the smoothies, this is also nutritionally sound for longer lengths of time.

Raw Food cleansing would include juices, green smoothies, and a wide variety of fruits, veggies, raw nuts and seeds to ensure adequate nutrient intake. This can also include healthy teas and other superfoods. This type of cleanse can be the most satisfying because there are a lot more options.

AM: What are the various cleanse options that Raw Generation has available and how do you know which one is right for you?

JR: Skinny Cleanse - Our most popular cleanse option, providing 6 cold-pressed juices a day. It’s perfect for everyone who wants to jumpstart a healthier lifestyle and shed a few pounds fast. However, if you select the Skinny Cleanse you should be sure to do it at a time when you have minimal physical demands.

Protein Cleanse - A great option for those who want to detoxify without giving up their everyday level of physical activity. This cleanse has 3 cold-pressed juices and 3 protein shakes for each day, so you can stay energized and build muscle throughout.

Skinny System - Both a cleanse AND a long-term meal plan. It’s perfect for anyone who has a larger appetite and needs something to fight off savory cravings, providing 3 cold-pressed juices, 2 savory soups, and 1 protein shake for each day. The addition of fiber will help sustain your appetite and fight junk cravings.

Soup Cleanse - Our lowest sugar, highest fiber cleanse option. Great for anyone who is watching their sugar intake and prefers savory flavors to sweet. This cleanse gives you 3 soups and 3 cold-pressed green juices each day.

Keto Cleanse - Our newest product was designed for people who are already on a keto diet and want to detoxify, OR want to kick off state of ketosis. This cleanse is high in healthy fats with minimal carbohydrates. This is a great way to neutralize the unhealthy acidity that occurs if you are eating a diet that is particularly rich in meat and dairy while still maintaining ketosis.

Flu Recovery Facial.jpg

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | FLU RECOVERY FACIAL

March 7, 2018

For those that have battled the flu, you fight to get back on your feet by increasing your fluids, getting rest and trying any remedy that you may have come across. But did you know that there is such a thing as a Flu Recovery Facial that helps the recovery process! We chatted with Celebrity Esthetician Thai Morrison about this beauty must.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What is the flu facial?

THAI MORRISON: The Flu Recovery Facial consists of double cleansing with Kanvas Flower Power Oil Wash to restore hydration and moisture to the skin. This process is followed up with the Kanvas md Polished Emollient Cleanser to exfoliate dead skin cells while executing an amazing sinus trigger point face massage. The next step involves applying the Kanvas Glow Mask and allowing it to sit for 10-15 minutes. The mask contains essential vitamins, oils and collagen to hydrate and plump the skin. While the mask is penetrating the skin, Kanvas Plump Gold Eye Pads are applied under the eyes to relieve puffiness and dark circles. Steam is applied. After thoroughly rinsing the mask, the skin is infused with Avené Thermal Spring Water to calm and soothe the skin. This is followed up with Kanvas Glow Cream moisturizer and Kanvas md Antioxidant Sunscreen Cream. We are all aware that the flu wreaks havoc on the skin and this facial aids in restoring vitality to the skin from essential elements lost during the process of recovering from the flu.

AM: Who (besides someone getting or currently has the flu) would be a good candidate for this?

TM: The Flu Recovery Facial is an excellent hydrating facial for anyone needing a hydration boost to their skin care routine. While the Flu Recovery Facial is targeted toward clients who need immediate impactful hydration results, the Kanvas skin care line accommodates all skin types and can be customized for essential skin care needs based on skin type. This facial is a great way to recover and look amazing going back to work or returning to your normal activities.

AM: How did you come up with this?

TM: This concept was derived as a direct result of having the flu and saw that my skin was dehydrated due to not being able to really eat or drink much. I noticed that a lot of my clients were also having the same issues with their skin and I found this treatment to be most effective.

AM: What makes is so special?

TM: The Kanvas Flu Recovery Facial is special because it gives instant results and minimizes the damage to skin from the flu. Clients leave the spa with visible results of highly moisturized and
hydrated skin. The facial massage relieves congestion and results in sinuses opening up. The icing on the cake is that these products can be purchased for home use immediately to maintain the look.

AM: What else can you tell us about the facial?

TM: The facial takes roughly 45-55 minutes depending on the client’s skin condition upon arrival. The implementation is in the details and we always go above and beyond to ensure results. Some processes may take longer than others to achieve consistent results. Our clients love the facial and love our Kanvas high quality ingredient products that deliver results. Kanvas products are available in our boutique spa store and can be purchased online as well either through www.koffeedayspa.com or www.kanvasskin.com.

AM JAN SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW SAKE-1.jpg

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | SAKE

February 6, 2018

Around our offices, we've been fans of sake for years and we enjoy it beyond our sushi lunches and dinners. As we always have some on hand and have had a number of Sake in a Cups while we were in Tokyo, we wanted to know more about how this drink can be paired with a number of celebratory situations that you would typically do with wine or champagne. We chatted with Timothy Sullivan, Sake Expert and an ambassador to Hakkaisan to find out more about this rice wine.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us how you became an expert on Sake and what is it about this particular category that sets it apart from spirits and wines.

TIMOTHY SULLIVAN: I discovered premium sake about 12 years ago while having a sushi dinner in Manhattan. On a whim, I decided to splurge and order a high end sake to pair with the sushi.
I was blown away with the pairing and fell in love with sake on the spot. I started a sake website a few months later, UrbanSake.com, to record my experiences and misadventures learning my way around the sake world. From that point on, I studied and learned all that I could and tasted as much sake as possible to train my palate. In 2007, I had my first trip to Japan and visited my first sake brewery, and in 2010, I left my previous day job and began working full time in the sake industry. Sake education has become my passion and my career!

Sake is unique. It's complex production method is not used to make any other kind of alcohol. Premium Sake is gluten free, vegan, free of sulfites, and tannins and has a much lower acidity
than wine. In addition, sake is much richer in amino acids than wine or beer, allowing "umami" flavors to come out in many sakes.

AM: What is your role with Hakkaisan as an ambassador?

TS: My role as Brand Ambassador for Hakkaisan is to travel around the US and internationally and introduce not only Hakkaisan sake, but to teach about sake in general as many places as I can. To achieve this, I hold events for consumers such as sake tastings or pairing dinners, but I also work with restaurants and wine shops to do staff trainings. I work hard to clear up as many misconceptions about sake and I am so lucky to be able to meet with people all over the world and talk sake!

AM: You do a number of Sake talks here in NYC - what is your purpose in doing them?

TS: Yes, as a matter of fact, my next talk is coming up Feb 7th 2018 at the Japan Society. I'll be giving a lecture and slideshow about my recent experience of living and working for one year
as a sake brewer at Hakkaisan in Niigata, Japan. I hold lectures as often as I can to get people interested in sake. As sake becomes more and more popular with the mainstream consumer, I feel that education is of vital importance.

AM: Are the rules of pairing red and white wine with various meats and meals applicable to sake as well?

TS: Sake is quite different from wine, so most of the rules you may have heard about wine pairing (red wine with meat etc) do not apply to sake. However, I have heard one rule for wine pairing that totally fits for sake as well. Matching the weight and intensity of the wine and dish is a good rule of thumb. The same general guideline goes for sake. If you are eating a dense and spicy Japanese curry, a light and silky daiginjo sake may not be the best bet. Reach for a more full bodied, rice-driven junmai sake instead. The body and weight will stand up to the
curry much better!

That being said, it is an open secret in the sake world that sake is generally much more forgiving than wine when it comes to food pairing. This is because of the lower acidity and comparatively milder flavors. I encourage my students to experiment when it comes to food and sake pairing. It's fun and you never know what you'll discover.

20983004968_ff3e2cb307_o.jpg

AM: With Valentine's Day around the corner, many want an alternative to popping champagne - what is a great sparkling sake that should be considered?

TS: The Japanese sake industry is upping their game when it comes to sparkling sake. Years ago, sparking sake was not taken seriously and viewed as something very low alcohol, cotton
candy sweet and marketed to women in frosted pink bottles. Times have changed and many really good sparkling sakes are coming onto the market. Hakkaisan also makes sparkling sake. In the US market now, we sell our Hakkaisan Sparkling Nigori sake. This is a cloudy type of sparkling sake with a full 14% alcohol. It has a hint of sweetness up front, but overall has great balance and a bright acidity on the finish to cleanse the palate. This is the perfect champagne alternative for those who want to offer their guests something unique.

AM: When friends are coming over what is the perfect sake to pair with a charcuterie and cheese platter?

TS: When I hear "charcuterie and cheese platter" my mind immediately jumps to warm sake. Now, I am not talking about cheap, scalding hot, mass market sake you may have tried as a shot in college. I mean a gently warmed premium sake. When the serving temperature of some styles of high-quality sake is slowly raised, the texture becomes a touch richer and the umami and savory characteristics in the sake really come forward. This is a magic pairing with the meaty flavors you can find in charcuterie and the salty/creamy flavors of the best cheeses. I personally recommend Hakkaisan Tokubetsu Honjozo as a great example of a versatile type of premium sake that is great served either chilled or warm. When chilled, the Honjozo tastes dry and crisp, when warmed, it becomes ricer and more savory. Try warming your sakes to around 115˚F for maximum flavor.

21343903130_117ed37911_o.jpg

AM: When you're bingeing on Netflix shows, what's the perfect sake to unwind with while enjoying solo?

TS: I have a special sake to recommend for this one. That fateful night back in 2005, when I ordered that premium sake at the sushi restaurant, the sake I tried was actually Hakkaisan Junmai Ginjo. And 12 years later I represent the brand! I can honestly say this sake changed my life. Hakkaisan Junmai Ginjo is the perfect sake for sipping with Netflix. The taste is a textbook
example of the regional style of Niigata, where Hakkaisan brewery is located. It is smooth, lightly dry and super clean with a crisp, refreshing finish.

This type of sake is easy drinking and does not tire out your palate. Some people describe the taste as being as crisp as a mountain stream, but I go one better - my nickname for this sake is "magic water". Pour it into a wine glass, start binge watching 'The Crown' and enjoy.

AM: Sake is for more then just sushi - what would you suggest for Taco Tuesday?

TS: I couldn't agree more! Sake pairs with so much more than sushi. Tacos can have some spice to them, so I love to recommend a bit of a bolder style sake to stand up to that. The type of
sake we call "nama" fits the bill perfectly! Our Shiboritate Nama Genshu is an unpasteurized sake giving it a fresh and vibrant edge. This sake is also undiluted with water, so the ABV is a full 19%! This Nama Genshu sake is as close as you can get to drinking unprocessed sake right from right from our press. It's bold and rich while still being fresh and balanced. The perfect
foil for Mexican fare!

TIMELESS JOURNEYS: Travels to the World's Legendary Places, which is perfect to add to your library, coffee table or to gift someone on your list.

As we flipped through our copy we found destinations that were known to us and others that we want to discover! Ford Cochran, Director of Proramming, National Geographic Expeditions
(he has worked with them for 20 years and wrote the foreward for this book) believes that, "In these expeditions to the wonders of our world—supreme achievements of nature and the human spirit—you’ll find endless inspiration, riches to fill your imagination, and, just maybe, insights into that destination you call home. Don’t take my word for it. Just turn the page.”

50 stunning destinations that everyone should see at least once in your lifetime are included in this book. In addition to the stunning pictures there is historical information, innovative travel
tips and secrets that are shared that will assist you when you travel there or to add a conversational note when you're out amongst friends. You'll find landmarks from lesser known areas; however, they will draw you in to learn more about them.

AM OCT SOMETHING YOU SHOUL KNOW RUGGED MANIAC-1.jpg

SOMETHING YOUR SHOULD KNOW | RUGGED MANIAC

November 14, 2017

Whether you run obstacle competition courses or enjoy watching them on TV, I think we can agree that we're obsessed with this method of fitness that our friends and co-workers tell us about. We found out more about Rugged Maniac, the health benefits and how they compare and differ from other courses that are offered in this space.

ATHLEISURE MAG: What is Rugged Maniac, how long has it been around and how many races take place a year?

ROB DICKENS: Rugged Maniac was founded in 2010 with its first event in October of that year in MA.  We now produce 30 events across the US and Canada each year.

AM: What brought you to Rugged Maniac and what is your role there?

RD: Rugged Maniac was founded by my business partner, Brad Scudder (CEO), and I (COO, CMO). We met in law school and we both worked as attorneys for a few years before embarking on this adventure. Brad was doing insurance defense litigation at a small firm in MA, while I was at a large international firm on Wall Street doing finance. We both grew up in rural areas and had spent much of our childhoods playing outside and participating in outdoors sports (skiing for Brad and surfing for me - I'm from coastal NC), so sitting at a desk all day didn't quite feel right. We both wanted to do something more adventurous.

full-sized-promo-72-mud.jpg

I got an email from Brad one day stating that he was leaving the practice of law to organize an obstacle course race in his hometown in rural MA.  I was intrigued and after some discussion I also left law to found Rugged Maniac.  I'm the Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Marketing Officer, which means I manage a large part of the company's operations while also overseeing all advertising, design, and PR.

AM: What are the similarities/differences of Rugged Maniac versus other obstacle competition companies?

RD:
Rugged Maniac is now the third largest OCR in the country behind Tough Mudder and Spartan Race.  Our goal is to get everyone off their couches and outdoors having FUN with friends while being active. Our courses are undoubtedly challenging, but we're not going to shock you with electricity, make you jump in ice water, or punish you for not being able to complete an obstacle.  It's not about being bigger, badder, and faster than those around you. It's about pushing your own limits while helping your friends (and strangers!) over the obstacles.  This philosophy has made us the go-to event for people of all fitness levels, not just hardcore athletes.  We also have more women participants than any other OCR.  In fact, women make up 55% of our participants!

Speaking of obstacles, we pack more into our 3-mile course (25) than Spartan Race's 5k (20) and Tough Mudder's normal 12-mile course (20).  We also put a lot of emphasis on the entertainment in our festival.  We have a DJ on the main stage, a comedic emcee entertaining the crowd all day, a mechanical bull, pie-eating contests, dance parties, and plenty of craft beer. You simply don't see as big of a party at any other OCR.

As for Warrior Dash, they also focus more on the fun aspect of obstacle course racing, but they provide only 10-12 minor obstacles in a 3-mile course, which just doesn't measure up to what other OCRs offer.

AM: What are the health benefits to training for Rugged Maniac and how long is training for a race of this nature?

RD:
Rugged Maniac is a 5k (3-mile) off-road run with 25 obstacles, each of which poses a different physical challenge. This means that your training has to include not only running, but climbing, crawling, jumping, and balancing - more of a total body workout than when preparing for a normal 5k or marathon.  How long you have to train depends on (1)  your race goal and (2) your current fitness level.

If your goal is to win the race (only about 5% of runners have this as a goal), you'll need to be able to run a normal 5k in about 16 minutes AND have the upper body strength necessary to complete The Ringer, Pull Your Weight, and The Warped Wall (see www.rugedmaniac.com/obstacles).  However, the vast majority of our maniacs aren't "in it to win it."  They come with a group of friends in order to have a ton of fun while challenging themselves physically.  It's not about beating everyone else; it's about camaraderie and fun.

So if you fall into this category, you'll likely just want to be able to complete all the obstacles.  For most people, this means working on your upper body strength and balance (The Gauntlet, Frog Hop, and Tipping Point). Again, how long it will take to reach that point will depend on your current abilities.

trampoline.jpg

AM: How can training for this race be adopted throughout a person's life?

RD: There are no shortcuts to getting in shape, unfortunately.  It doesn't matter what you're training for, you simply have to make exercising part of your daily (or weekly) routine - no excuses. If you want to be in great shape, you need to work out at least three times a week, with the bulk of that time being spent on cardiovascular activities with some strength training mixed in. You don't need a gym membership; you can get in perfect shape by running and doing cody-weight exercises, like push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, etc.

AM: Are Rugged Maniac courses the same and what's it like creating them?

RD:
The obstacles at each Rugged Maniac event are largely the same nationwide (as are the obstacles for every other OCR brand). Think of an OCR event as a traveling circus, of sorts.  Everything is packed up and shipped to the next location following each event.  Variety comes from the differences in the venues; some are completely flat, some are on mountain slopes, some are in the desert, some are next to a lake. So the runner experience from event to event can vary quite a bit.  Of course, we add a few new obstacles to our courses each year to keep things interesting (while retiring some older designs).

AM: What other events are produced?

RD:
Rugged Races, the parent company of Rugged Maniac, also owns and produces The Tour of the Battenkill cycling event in upstate New York; the Costume Dash 5k (Halloween costume run) in Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco; and 16 other 5ks/marathons/half marathons throughout New England under the Loco Races name.

AM: What should we keep an eye out for within Rugged Races 2018?

RD: We plan to continue acquiring a variety of sports properties throughout 2018 as we grow into one of the country's largest event producers. We have some exciting opportunities in front of us so stay tuned for more announcements!

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | NAIL CARE

August 1, 2017

We all spend so much time frequenting our favorite manicure and pedicure salons, but it is important to have the appropriate nail care tips in between our next appointment, as well as to allow the nail to breathe. This can be done at home or even on your vacation as we find this to be a relaxing way to enjoy self-care.

We got the scoop on tips of how to maintain our nails from Skyy Hadley, owner of As U Wish Salon. She shared with us how to allow our manicure to last longer during the heat wave that we're all enjoying.

TRANSITION FROM REMOVING YOUR POLISH TO APPLYING A NEW HUE

•    Remove your polish and let your nails breathe for a good few days. If nails look discolored, squeeze some lemon into your lotion or rub a lemon wedge directly onto the nail to brighten nails.

•    Apply a shea butter lotion or non-greasy cream to lock in moisture.

•    Begin painting! Apply a cuticle oil such as Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail & Cuticle Oil to the base of your nails (or even when they are already polished), focusing around the cuticle area to hydrate and bring moisture into the skin, helping the polish last longer. This restores radiance to nails and cuticles and promotes strong nails.

SHADES THAT WORK BEST ON FAIR, MEDIUM AND DARK COMPLEXIONS

•    Fair skin, use white and blue undertones
•    Medium skin, use pink undertones
•    Dark skin, almost use transparent tones

IS IT SAFE TO CUT CUTICLES

•    Trimming or cutting cuticles dur ing a manicure is purely cosmetic and sometimes doesn’t benefit the nail in any way. The cuticle is the barrier to protect the surrounding skin and help develop the nail free from infections. (Bacteria)

HOW CAN ONE TREAT YELLOW/WHITE NAILS?

•  The most common suggestion would be to stop using so much dark nail polish. Of course we all love using dark colors, but this may cause your nails to become discolored. Secondly, always use a base coat. By using a base coat, you’re adding in a protective layer between your nails and the polish. This will also help to prevent staining and can actually help keep your nails healthier.

HOW TO TREAT INGROWN TOENAILS

•    Ingrown toenails can be painful and can easily become infected. Try soaking your foot in warm salt bath water for 15 minutes a couple of times every day. This will help relieve pain and swelling. The other thing you could try is gently pulling the skin away from the nail using a small nail file or other blunt device that won’t cut or hurt the toe.

WHAT IS THIS SUMMER'S NAIL POLISH COLOR

•    Baby blue, with pink undertone, as well as all nude colors.

BEST WAY TO CUT NAILS

•    The best way to cut your nails is to make sure you clean under the nail otherwise bacteria could form. Use fingernail clippers for your fingers, and use toenail clippers for your toes. If you are unsure of what shape your nails should have, just look at your cuticles. The U-shape of the cuticle should be reflected (upside down) by the top of your nail. The primary goal is to mirror the shape.

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | THE BIKINI LINE

July 6, 2017

Hair removal is a year around process and not just one that should come to mind during the summer. With that said, this time of year - there seems to be a targeted focus on the bikini
line when you're rocking your favorite swim and summer looks!

We have been fans of Shobha for years as they offer a number of options to rock fierce brows and to remove hair across your body with a number of methods. They're also about using the safest and most natural means to do so. Our team has been going here for years and we took some time to chat with Shobha's CEO and Founder Shobha Tummala to understand more
about the world of hair removal.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Hair Removal is a hot topic whether you're tackling your bikini line, eyebrows or other portions of your body. We know you offer threading, sugaring, waxing and laser as methods of hair removal. Why would one choose these methods of hair removal when coming to Shobha?

SHOBHA TUMMALA: Threading is the most precise form of hair removal which is why we only offer threading options for the brows. It allows you to pull one hair at a time which gives you
the control of tweezing, but you can pull an entire row of hair which gives you a nice line for brow shaping. People sometimes have the misconception that because the specialist uses
her mouth as an anchor for the thread that it is unsanitary but that’s totally untrue. The part of the string that touches her mouth never makes contact with the client's skin.

Sugaring is an all-natural alternative to waxing, which is great for those who have sensitive skin! Also, sugaring tends to be gentler than waxing because the Shobha Sugaring Gel attaches more to the hair and less to the skin, thus causes less irritation.

Laser gives the comfort of being able to wear whatever, whenever you want without questioning when the last time you went to Shobha for a wax. In more technical terms, laser is a permanent form of hair reduction. It eliminates the targeted hairs for good, which also means it takes care of bumps and ingrowns (no hair, no hair to become ingrown), leaving you with
super smooth skin!

AM: The bikini line is always something that many think about once the weather gets warm. What are some tips that people should know upon their first visit to Shobha upon getting this treatment?

ST: Here at Shobha we always recommend for our clients to be:

Clean – bathe like you would if you were going to a doctor’s appointment.

Dry – cleanliness is appreciated, but please skip the lotion, you'll get better results if your skin is less oily.

Hairy – your hair should be at least 1/4 inch in length (which makes it long enough to lay flat on your skin).

If hairs are still sticking straight out, you should probably wait a few more days. Also, if you are usually a "shaver" your hair should be slightly longer for the best results. Shaving can cause hair re-growth to be uneven, in which some hairs can be too short to be removed with wax or sugaring gel and may result in the appearance of stubble after your first treatment. Always try to wait at least 2 weeks from your last shave before a waxing/sugaring
treatment.

AM: What upkeep is needed for the bikini line and is it different for those that opt for lasering, sugaring or waxing at Shobha?

ST: The huge difference between the upkeep needed for the bikini line between sugaring/waxing services and laser is with our laser services we do not want you to be tan when you come in – whether that’s a tan from the sun or a sunless tanner. You will get burned or have adverse effects if you have some sort of tan when you come in. The laser is trained to go after the pigment which affects the type of laser that will be most effective for you.

Also, for laser we actually encourage you to shave 24 hours before your laser appointment – sounds crazy right? Shaving before laser appointments is super important because it allows the laser to zap the targeted hairs at the roots. With sugaring and waxing we never want you
to shave between services because it causes uneven hair regrowth.

AM: What is the Shobha method and why is it better for your clients to receive their treatments here?

ST: The signature Shobha Method is our tried and true method for getting rid of unwanted body hair. We always use our own exclusive wax and sugaring gel consisting of a proprietary formula and implement the Shobha Method thus giving super smooth results.

Our formula effectively removes hair from the root - contains azulene oil, a natural anti-inflammatory derived from the chamomile plant to soothe the skin during the treatment. We’re fast and efficient - large areas can be waxed at once (most of our appointments are under 30
minutes!). Our ingredients are safe - free of artificial fragrance and parabens.

AM: One of the biggest reasons why we have been coming to Shobha for years is that you use a lot of natural products which are great for the skin and don't have toxic chemicals - can you share information about these in-house Shobha products?

ST: Sure! We have always made it a main priority of ours to make natural, yet effective products that educates our client on the importance of what they put on their skin. For example, we can proudly tout that since 2008, after reading the initial reports of the possible links between cancer and talc, we developed our own safe alternative - Shobha® Talc-Free Powder. Click here for our full line of professional grade products that are safe enough to use at home .

AM: You've had great growth in Manhattan, Georgetown and in Rockville, Maryland - are there additional locations that you may be popping up in?

ST: YES! We’re super excited to announce that Shobha Brooklyn is (slowly, but surely) under construction and we expect to open its doors by fall of 2017. It will be located in Williamsburg
at 76 North 4th Street (between Wythe Ave & Berry Street).

AM: Are there other summer focused treatments (although we know they are available year around) that people come to beyond their bikini lines?

ST: We’ve noticed that our clients are loving getting laser hair removal on the bikini area which also allows them to customize the hair down there if they don’t want to be completely bare.

AM: Are there other treatments that you will be bringing into the salon that you can tell us about?

ST: Yes, we’re always looking to bring new services in the salons! You’ll have to stay tuned to stay-in-the know about all of our deals & our happenings! Be sure to check back often

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | TAKE A TEA MOMENT

April 5, 2017

Whether you're traveling for business or enjoying a staycation - it's a perfect way to take a moment before embarking on plans. As we travel a lot, we like to have items from home to make the journey a little easier. We always have our hotel favorites such as the Fairmont Hotel in Georgetown when we're in DC! While enjoying a night's stay on their Gold Floor, you can enjoy their tea selection and honey (they have their own bee farm on their roof) or you can bring your own while you relax and decide what's next!

When you're traveling this Spring, once you settle in - it's time to have a bit of tea. As we're still waiting for temperatures to rise, a spiked hot tea is a great way to soothe your throat while also spicing up your tea leaves.

We suggest getting your favorite blend and brewing it with your favorite device (or calling room service) and add in Nautical Gin which has elderflower which adds to the floral notes of your tea as well as sweetening it with Truvia Nectar. Add these to taste.

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | THE ADULTING SLUMBER PARTY

March 11, 2017

We're not kids anymore, but there are times where we need to take our cue from our favorite childhood past times  to infuse in our adulting lifestyle. The Slumber Party was always a fun way to bring your favorites together. It was about having everyone in one room, eating pizza or snacks, trying beauty routines and of course having amazing gossip that hopefully never left the inner sanctuary. It was about coming together and bonding. To go to a slumber party was having an insiders access with your crew!

View fullsize aveda.jpeg
View fullsize Group Shot.jpg
View fullsize garnier.jpg

We're older, wiser, and sophisticated, but the need to connect is still as important as ever! We identify with a number of tribes and whether we engage with them in their set spheres or mix it up, the Adulting Slumber Party is one that you need to add to your plans as much as your next brunch! The options are endless whether you hold it in your home, book a suite at one of your favoite hotels or check out a fabulous place on Home Away. Set a date, send out your Paperless Post and make sure you create an experience.

Our slumber parties can incorporate meditation, a yoga session, testing beauty products, creating some cocktails, amazing dishes to snack on and of course, being able to gab about any and everything that brings you together!

We suggest some must haves to get your night off to the right start with our finds that can be introduced to your tribe as well as enjoyed solo or at a future activity.

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW: HONEYMOON TRAVEL TIPS

February 8, 2017

When planning a honeymoon, there are a lot of options to choose from. We talked with Lonely Planet's book editor, Jessica Cole on their new guidebook, The Honeymoon Handbook, which shares an array of tips and destinations.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us about Lonely Planet.

JESSICA COLE: Lonely Planet is the world's leading travel guide publisher. Along with guidebooks and ebooks to almost every destination on the planet, we also produce a range of gift and reference titles, an award-winning website and magazine and a range of digital travel products and apps. All of them are designed to help travelers discover the world. They'll find destination overviews, independently and trusted reviews on restaurants, accommodation, sights and activities, and practical information.

AM: What is the thought process behind The Honeymoon Handbook?

JC: Getting married is the most socially accepted excuse in the world to throw off the bowlines and plan your ultimate dream trip. But planning such a big trip is a huge undertaking. We know that  not all honeymooners want to lie on a beach for a fortnight: more couples than ever before are looking for adventure and activities on their honeymoons. So we made a book full of inspiration, ideas, destination guides and advice for how to plan the trip of a lifetime to set marriage off to a magical start.

AM: The Honeymoon Handbook tackles familymoons, minimoons etc - what trends are emerging in the category?

JC: Unique is the new normal: honeymooners no longer want to settle for a one-size-fits-all package vacation. They want the perfect trip that suits them, which means familymoons and minimoons are becoming more and more popular, along with other unique and custom itineraries. Couples are seeking more experiential activities and adventure for their special trip.

AM: How did you select the destinations that you included in the book?

JC: We wanted to incorporate trips that worked for everyone, no matter what you love and when you want to go. So our destinations cover everything from city fun in frenetic Tokyo to Caribbean island-hopping and tapas-sampling in Andalucia.

AM: Did you conduct surveys from couples who planned their honeymoon?

JC: We know plenty of those, either embarking or just back from their honeymoon trips, and with this anecdotal research we formed ideas about what matters to honeymooners now, which places are becoming more popular, and what activities couples are looking for. We pinpointed trends for romantic getaways to feature the most up-to-date, relevant and practical advice possible.

AM: Did your team travel to the destinations while researching for this book?

JC: Lonely Planet has hundreds of writers out on the road for us, many of whom contributed to The Honeymoon Handbook. These writers know the world incredibly well and are constantly roaming, researching and discovering new places and the latest trends so that we can deliver the best travel information to our readers.

AM: What destinations in this book are your favorites?

JC: Having taken my own honeymoon only last October, I have a very soft spot for Tokyo and the Mount Fuji region! The food was beyond wonderful, and Japan is a beautiful and unique country. It was a culture we had never explored before, which is just what we wanted! Another firm favorite for a different sort of trip entirely is Sri Lanka - it has wonderful beaches, diverse national parks, out-of-this-world landscapes and the friendliest people I've ever met.

AM: Do you anticipate making this book annually?

JC: The title will probably be a one-off, but with every reprint - which might happen once or several times a year - we update the information inside it, so readers can be promised accurate and up-to-the-minute information.

AM: What 3 tips do you feel are essential for couples to remember regardless of their honeymoon spot?

JC: 1. Choose a destination that works for you both - and don't feel you have to cave to others' expectations of what a honeymoon 'should' be. Trust your instincts of what you two will love the best.

2. Mix up your activities - indulge in luxury treats, but don't overlook the budget options - you might find it's the more down-to-earth experiences that will help create memories that last a lifetime

3. Don't be shy! Tell people you're on your honeymoon. You might be surprised to discover how happy others are to make you feel special.

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | GIFTING ESSENTIALS

January 14, 2017

When it comes to gifting, it's essential to have the tools to get the job done. When prepping your gifts, it's important to ensure that your bows are steamed with the Reliable DASH 100G (the flat plate really presses it), name tags are uniform via the Brother PT-D210 label maker, and Scotch Thermal Laminator keeps your party plan pages intact throughout the holiday season!
