MIAMI SWIM WITH AUDRINA PARTRIDGE X PREY

August 6, 2017

If you were a fan of MTV's reality show "The Hills", then you know and love this brunette stunner, Audrina Partridge. She had an easy sense of style and could always rock a bikini! After the show ended in 2010, like many of her co-stars, she went on to being in her own spin-off show, other TV opportunities and this month she launched Prey Swim for Resort 2017 at Miami Swim! We took a moment to talk to this busy mom about what she's been up to, her collection and how she keeps it all together.

ATHLEISURE MAG: It's not a surprise to us that you launched a swim line, how did it all come together?

AUDRINA PARTRIDGE: Everytime I traveled I was inspired by so many things and my lens would capture it! It didn't matter if I was in Mexico, South Korea or Costa Rica - there were so many things to see. I'm inspired by colors, textures and patterns. As I continue my collections, they will have an element of what inspired me or what I experienced while there.

AM: We know you love the beach - what are your favorites?

AP: I love Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Mexico. Australia has beautiful beaches in its Gold Coast and Byron Bay. Heaven on Earth can be found in Bora Bora!

AM: What is the inspiration behind your line and what can we expect from Prey Swim?

AP: I'm a Bohemian girl and love that lifestyle. I also love earth tones and patterns. Even though I have never been to Morocco (and really want to go) - it felt so natural to start here as my inspiration. I also love that a lot of the hardwear that we use in the line is actual shark teeth on the end of strings! I love the ocean, my husband (Australian extreme sports star, Corey Bohan) surfs and I love sharks as I feel that they are not our enemies and that we need them!

I also feel that my line is transitional as it can be worn from day to night depending on how you pair it! I want every woman who wears this line to feel good as these pieces will hug you in the right places!

The line has three collections: The Marrakech Collection (Summer 2017) focusing on Prey Swim's signature styles and is a nod to Marrakech in the 60's and 70's, as well as The Rolling Stones, The Riviera Collection (Pre-Fall 2017), which showcases the effortless style of The French Riviera in the 50's and 60's, and The Joya Collection (Resort 2018), which is inspired by Peru - the mecca of boho fashion in the 70's.

AM: What does it mean to you to show at this season's Miami Swim Week?

AP: I was so excited to show Prey Swim to Miami Swim Week! This is something I dreamed of when planning our initial brand debut, so to be showing here so soon after launching is a dream come true. There are so many amazing swim designers showing collections that I
have been a fan of for quite some time, so to be showing my line in their company, as a fellow swim designer, is an honor. Miami is such an amazing city with so many incredible cultures represented, so it is the perfect setting to showcase Prey collections, which draw inspirations from cultures and countries all over the world.

A FEW SIPS WITH ERIN ANDREWS

July 14, 2017

There are many ways to enjoy one of those classic summer nights with your girlfriends. We hung out on a rooftop to take a sunset pilates session and then enjoyed White Claw Hard Seltzer Water with NFL/FOX Sports sideline reporter and Co-Host of ABC's Dancing with the Stars host, Erin Andrews. We chatted with her on how she broke into the industry, her favorite teams, how she stays fit and her partnership with White Claw.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us a little about your background in terms of how you got into sports as well as being a host on Dancing with the Stars?

ERIN ANDREWS: I became a sportscaster and went to school for it. I'm a huge sports fan and have been so my entire life. I'm a Daddy's Girl so yeah - it just all happened from there. I was a
contestant on Dancing with the Stars in 2009 and they came knocking on my door and said, "would you like to host the show" and I did!

AM: How is it different in preparing on the sidelines for a game, versus when you're hosting for Dancing with the Stars?

EA: For me, it's pretty much the same thing. Because for me, I prepare for sports a lot but then a lot of it - you can't prepare for during the actual game. It's unexpected, something always
happens you can't predict the outcome of the game. So you don't know what's going to happen, so you have to kind of just go with it and react as it is happening. The same can be
said for Dancing with the Stars - you don't know how someone is going to perform, what they're going to do - whether they have a wardrobe malfunction. You just kind of have to roll
with the punches.

AM: Who are your favorite teams?

EA: I was raised by a Green Bay Packer fan, a Red Sox fan, as well as a Celtics fan. Basically whoever my dad liked. He was raised in New England and he said that when he was growing up, The Patriots weren't that great of a team and they weren't really on television, but Green Bay Packers were, so he became a fan of theirs.

AM: What's your personal style when you're going out for brunch versus when you're going out with your girlfriend's for a night out?

EA: My personal style with brunch and going out is the same. It's a t-shirt and jeans. I'm very much a tomboy and not glam like this. I can't wait to get out of this and into a t-shirt and jeans
actually! So yeah, I'm very tomboyish - basically, all my t-shirts are white, grey and black. I like to rock Vans and Stan Smiths.

AM: So you're getting married - what are 3 key exercises that you do to look amazing for a wedding or are just perfect as we continue through our summer body season?

EA: I'm big into squats and I love anything that has to do with my arms. I like weighted exercise for them and I am REALLY into planks - anything like that!

AM: We've been a fan of the hard seltzer category for a few years. Why do you like hard seltzer and why did you partner with White Claw Hard Seltzer?

EA: I love being active. The feeling that I get from working out and being strong is something I am proud of. And, it’s important to me not to undo all my hard work when I want to have a drink. I love White Claw Hard Seltzer because it not only tastes great, but allows me to make better choices while still enjoying life and socializing with friends.

ATHLEISURE LIST | AIRE ANCIENT BATHS

July 2, 2017

NYC is a place filled with a hustle and bustle that moves at a dizzying pace, so the need for a spa to get back to self is essential. But there are some spas that are literally hidden gems that
take you to another world. AIRE Ancient Baths is a subterranean Tribeca spa destination that merges traditions of the ancient Greek, Roman, Ottaman and Arab empires together. Other locations of this decadent space around the world showcase bath traditions and revive this concept in restored historic buildings. Although this location opened its doors in 2012, the building was previously a textile factory that was built in 1883.

AIRE creates spaces and experiences to relax the body and mind according to ancient traditions of water with temperature contrasts as elements of relaxation and health. Its primary focus is to present the traditional ritual of relaxing and rejuvenation through water.

Guests will enjoy hot and cold pools courtesy of the Romans, the intimate tubs are a nod to the Greeks and the use of steam and hot stones come from the Ottoman and Arab empires. Entering the 16,000 square-foot space is an intimate affair as only 20 people are allowed to fill the marble and stone space which is lit by a number of lanterns from Marrakech! You can
alternate between four pools ranging from fiery (102 degrees) to icy (46 degrees); there is a saltwater bath (the Roman alvea), and a large, multiperson tub with aggressive bubbling jets. A
glass-enclosed hammam is accessible and there are heated marble benches where juices and teas can be enjoyed.

In addition to the pools, you can select an hour-long four-handed massage (or a fifteen-minute refresher) or a three hour ritual including a private bath upstairs (for one or two), infused with a choice of red wine, cava, or olive oil.

It's worth noting that all you need to bring with you is a swimsuit. Special slippers are provided by the spa which can be worn in the water. In addition, you are given a band that you wear
throughout your stay which electronically unlocks your locker.

DAVID CHANG | NIKE SB DUNK HIGH "MOMOFUKU"

June 25, 2017

If you've gone to any of celeb chef/restaurateur David Chang's group of eateries - you know there's always a line and something unexpected for diners! Whether it's savory dishes or their famous Compost Cookie (who hasn't made a Milk Bar run). This same sentiment that can be enjoyed at Momofuku locations has found its way into the release of the Nike SB Dunk High Momofuku shoes. This shoe is not only a limited release, but shoppers have to enter the world of Augmented Reality in order to snag these coveted sneakers. By going to the SNKRS app, you can unlock the shoes and be able to see whether there are quantities that you can get at the same time.

Visiting the app and pointing the camera on your phone to the image of the menu from the Fuku East Village or one of the Nike posters that are pasted outside of Momofuku locations in the US, a 3D model of the sneaker pops up allowing purchases of these shoes while supplies are available. The collaboration with David Chang is a homage to the world of Momofuku and launched at his restaurants on June 22nd.

This is not the first time that Nike has tried new ways to sell shoes through the SNKRS app via geo-fencing as this was done for Don C X Air Jordan 2 "Arctic Orange" and with specific time windows for Kevin Durant's "Still KD" colorway.

If There Are Still Pairs Available - Here's How To Get Them
Make sure you have the most recent version of the SNKRS app for iOS.

Go into the Behind The Design post about the Nike SB Dunk High Pro "Momofuku" in the SNKRS feed.

Once inside the post, scroll down until you find the .gif of the hidden Dunk rotating above the background image.

Tap this .gif to open the camera via SNKRS.

Once the camera is open, find David Chang’s Fuku East Village menu online (hint, that’s it below). Or any of the special SNKRS posters inspired by the menu that are pasted up outside all Momofuku restaurants in the U.S.

Hover over the menu or poster with the camera and then tap to unlock it. The shoe will instantly pop up on your screen.

If there are still pairs available, the invitation to purchase the Nike SB Dunk High Pro "Momofuku" will appear in your SNKRS Feed and Inbox.

SIMPLE SELF DEFENSE SKILLS TO KNOW WHEN TRAVELING

June 16, 2017

Traveling can frazzle your brain. Between trying to remember if you locked up the house or put your ID back into your wallet, thinking about personal safety in airport parking lots is the last thing on most people’s minds. However, poorly lit parking garages, arms full of luggage, confusing parking signs, forgetting where you parked and keys buried in the bottom of an overflowing purse can make people easy targets for predators. To help people stay safe while traveling, Krav Maga Worldwide, the industry leader in self-defense and fitness, has put together a list of personal safety tips to keep in mind when at the airport, train station or in an unfamiliar city.

Founded in 1997, Krav Maga Worldwide trains and certifies instructors and licenses over 150 authorized Krav Maga Worldwide training centers in the United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico, South America, and Europe, as well as over 800 law enforcement agencies and military units. They offer the highest caliber of instruction to thousands of people, supporting the company’s core commitment to improving and saving lives. The group continues to develop, promote and implement self-defense and fitness programs.

Stay aware of your surroundings by scanning your environment.

No matter how busy you are, do not allow your mind to wander. It might seem important in the moment to be making a to-do list in your head, but if you are worrying about what you need
to do when you get home you might not notice someone following you to your vehicle, reading your email over your shoulder or sliding a hand into your purse.

Park in well lit areas.

If you are renting a car while traveling, when you park - avoid spots next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows. You want to keep your car and yourself as visible
to as many people as possible and as such you should also avoid parking next to tall shrubs or plants that could block views of your vehicle.

Don't wear your purse or bag so that the strap crosses your body.

Wearing a purse strap across your body makes you more connected to your bag. If someone tries to steal your purse, you will be pulled with the strap. You can become unbalanced and put into a vulnerable position or you could end up in a physical altercation with the assailant. If your purse is draped on one shoulder you can easily let go of it.

Dress casually and comfortably.

During transit is not the time to make a fashion statement. It is better to leave the high heels and flashy statement making pieces at home or in your luggage until you arrive at your destination. Jeans and sneakers will help you blend in and if needed enable you to make a quick getaway. Also, avoid wearing large and expensive looking jewelry that can draw additional attention to you.

Always keep one arm and hand free of luggage and other gear.

Many people travel with multiple bags, purses, laptop cases and other accessories and gear. But, if your arms and hands are tied up with bags you have no means of defending yourself from an attacker. Luggage that can stack together securely and be pulled by one handle is a safer choice than wearing and carrying numerous bags on your person.

For more tips on staying safe while traveling, visit Krav Maga's site.

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW | CLUB MED SANDPIPER BAY

June 3, 2017

There are all kinds of vacations that one can take and without question, the all-inclusive is one where you can book your trip and go to your designated destination without worrying about paying for additional add-ons or wondering if you can access amenities that are offered. Recently, we headed to Club Med Sandpiper Bay, located in Port St. Lucie, Florida (the only Club Med in the US) about an hour outside of West Palm Beach International Airport. Club Med specializes in premium all-inclusive vacations. They are known for the active traveler who wants to be able to brush up on their skills, have access to a variety of sports and fitness methods and still have the option to do nothing at all if the mood strikes them. With 68 award-winning resorts in the world, guests have the ability to choose diverse locations that include tropical island oasis, ski retreats, exotic adventures and even luxurious cruising on a ship providing unique experiences and access to areas around them.

We arrived during the resort's Body & Mind Weeks program which runs from April 29th – June 3rd at this property. During these weeks, the resort becomes the ultimate destination for rejuvenation from the inside out. While there, we experienced professional coaches that are able to instruct and enhance your performance in golf, tennis and beach volleyball, enjoyed fitness training, had access to speakers who can talk about positive mental health and nutrition and booked a phenomenal experience at the L’Occitane Spa at Club Med (the only L’Occitane Spa in the US) which has a relaxing outdoor garden to continue your transformation before and after your treatment.

This program specifically (although this is also true outside of the weeks) focuses on Sports, Nutrition and Wellness. We opted for tennis as we were able to hone our skills by breaking down the sport from various serves, interval training and mastering coordination.

Any apprehension or questions that are felt prior to the session are replaced with an understanding of how to play the game better as well as to what can be worked on upon returning home. Those who are really keen on upping their game can book more time where they are videotaped and can see the instruction on how they advance and what they need to keep in mind as they work. This same focus was also rolled out for golf and beach volleyball.

It’s also worth noting that in addition to Club Med being a vacation spot for those that spend downtime there, it’s also a place where kids who are focused on learning the sport professionally live on site year around and are trained by the very same professional that guests are trained by. These kids study on campus, compete and are able to obtain scholarships as they move up the ranks and continue on their road to being professional players. The commitment to sport and excellence is clearly seen in this area of the community and as a guest, it’s interesting to see and feel the living community that exists here as there are varying groups of people who stay here longer than a vacation period which gives it a feel of a community with constant energy.

Beyond sports that are offered, guests have access to the gym as well as fitness instructors. During our visit, we had the opportunity to meet Leslee Bender (founder of the Bender Ball and the Bender Academy as well as the Co-Creator of Barre Above) and took one of her classes.

The flying trapeze is an activity that a number of guests couldn't stop talking about. Participants are able to learn how to make catches, swing and more with instructors that have circus, gymnast, and for some, Cirque de Soleil backgrounds. Whether you're doing it or simply watching - each person is trained in the practice area on the ground and then they are able to apply what they have learned in the air. Another fitness focused activity takes place on the soccer field where you can do interval training. These drills got the body moving, align the core and build strength when prepping to play a given sport.

Club Med is known as a place for families with activities that children can enjoy while parents are relaxing or being instructed. For those without families, this property sits on 200+ acres which includes the golf course, areas for a number of activities, meeting spaces, a variety of pools (one for adults only with a bar).

Relaxation can be found at the L’Occitane Spa where products can be purchased. For treatments, a form lets the masseuse know about targeted areas and places to avoid. We highly suggest enjoying the rose tea that they have as it was such a great way to get into the treatment. The spa's relaxation area before and after your treatment is an open air enclosed space that embodies the spirit of wellness.

At Sandpiper Bay, The Marketplace is a buffet where you can eat all meals. Guests can eat inside (there is an adult only section) and outside. The buffet offers a number of options for those with various dietary needs, healthy or splurge options and there is always rosé, red and white wine, and beer available to go with your meals. You can also enjoy your standard restaurant as well at the Riverside BBQ & Grill. Grab cocktails at Slice Bar and enjoy them at the bar, patio or head back to the pool.

Club Med provides a number of options that allow you to balance your day filled with activities or just completely chill near the closest palm tree. For more information on Club Med Sandpiper Bay or additional locations, visit www.ClubMed.us.

SIP THE WORLD WITH JACK MAXWELL

June 1, 2017

We're fans of shows that transport us to new locations - whether we actually visit or not. A new twist on the classic travel show includes the stories and cultures that Travel Channel's host, Jack Maxwell encounters on Booze Traveler.  On his way to Tahiti, Jack told us about the show, where he'd like to film and what he's learned doing the show.

ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us about your background - how did you become the Booze Traveler and had you ever bartended before or done anything in the alcohol industry?

JACK MAXWELL: Growing up shining shoes in the bar rooms of South Boston, I fell in love with the magical combination of booze, travel, adventure and storytelling. My neighborhood was filled with divey pubs and all sorts of characters who loved a drink and a story.

AM: Although the show follows you drinking through various countries, it's not really about drinking per se, but more of an Anthony Bourdain style (which we're fans of too) of the culture behind why one drinks or the history behind certain beverages. Why do you think that this resonates with viewers and what have you learned after doing this for 3 seasons?

JM: Maybe “Booze Traveler” resonates because we meet such interesting people, with really great stories. Hopefully my gratitude for that, along with my natural curiosity and joy for life, comes across.

AM: How important is interacting with the culture and sharing it with viewers of The Travel Channel?

JM: It's what the show is all about. The drink just gets us into the scene. It's all about the people and the culture.

AM: We loved when you drank vodka at Lake Baikal in Siberia and also enjoyed the episode of the Smoothie in Belize - what was your favorite country to enjoy a drink and what was it?

JM: I really loved having an authentic Mojito in Cuba. Drinking great Port while sailing the river through the Douro Valley in Portugal was another favorite. Having cocktails with the Conch Republic in Key West while fighting the Coast Guard, and zip lining through downtown Las Vegas with a Dean Martin impersonator were both fun, unforgettable experiences.

AM: Where would you like to film next and what beverage story would you like to learn about there?

JM: Having filmed Booze Traveler in roughly 50 countries - covering six continents - has been wonderful, a real eye-opener. I would love to find a native tribe somewhere yet to be discovered and have a drink with them. That would be fantastic.

AM: The show is an hour, but we see you enjoying a number of beverages and finding a particular drink, what is it like when you are taping for one of these shows?

JM: I probably don't put away as much booze as it seems. A lot of what you see on the show happens off camera, too. The camaraderie is real. The travel can be a grind, but the crew is great and we keep each other loose.

AM: With all of the traveling and beverages, do you detox or cleanse and what workouts do you do?

JM: I like to tell people I only drink at work, which is mostly true. Hard to pass up a nice bottle of wine with dinner though or a celebratory cocktail when I reunite with friends. Don't work out as much as I'd like. We are constantly on the road shooting long days, which I'm exhausted by the end of. I should do a better job of getting to the gym.

AM: What is your personal style in terms of what you wear to go out with friends or to run errands?

JM: Relaxed. Casual. Comfortable.

AM: You take a lot of flights, what is on your playlist and how do you make your travels more comfortable for long flights or for various legs on a trip?

JM: I have a lot of nice relaxing music on my iPod. When I want to get in the mood I play some Stones or Frank Sinatra, as different as those two are. Make sure I have a sleep mask and wax (not foam) earplugs on the plane. The wax kills a lot of the ambient noise; the mask helps you sleep. A few hours here and there make a difference.

AM: How do you manage jet lag - any tips that you can share?

JM: I try to drink as much water as I can. Keeps me hydrated and makes me get up and go to the bathroom. Great for circulation. DVT can be an issue on long flights, although I've never had a problem with it.

AM: When you're in between seasons, what would we find you doing?

JM: Visiting family. Hanging with friends. Resting. Probably won't see me on an airplane.

AM: Can you tell us if there is a season 4 and what locales are on your bucket list?

JM: We are filming season four of Booze Traveler right now. Very excited about the Tahiti episode. So tropically beautiful and naturally exotic. Also, Italy, Costa Rica, Norway and Romania.

AM: What tips do you have for traveling like a pro this summer from packing, essentials for your carry on and when you get to your final destination?

JM: Travel light. You probably don't need as many clothes as you think. Bring comfortable shoes. Don't make too many plans. The trip will be a blur and you'll have covered some distance, but won't remember as much as you should. Go off the beaten path. Duck into a café and talk to strangers. You might be surprised.

AM MAY SIP THE WORLD WITH JACK MAXWELL-4.jpg

AM: Feel free to tell us where we will see you next, whether it's an upcoming project or if you have philanthropies/charities that you are involved in!

JM: Very fortunate to be entrusted with a second show for Travel Channel called “Booze Traveler: Best Bars.” It's a pub crawl through all the best bars in the US. You will find me handing out toys at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Dept. Holiday Toy Drive in Phoenix every Christmas. My lifelong friend, Roy Catalo, is the chairman. One of the great joys in life is seeing the face of an underprivileged kid light up like a Lite-Brite when they pick out a toy they never thought they'd get.

YELLOW IS A GO

May 15, 2017

Sometimes you have to give it up to get it back together - but how far would you go to make sense of your world and your place in it? Kim Dinan does that while adding goodwill into the world in her memoir, The Yellow Envelope. We took some time to chat with Kim to find out about her series of time traveling with her husband as a global nomad, those she met along the way, what she learned and how she has assessed her time post the journey that was covered in her book.

ATHLEISURE MAG: We enjoyed this memoir, do you still go on nomadic adventures? How does it feel to be home with a routine etc?

KIM DINAN: I have not had a nomadic adventure since my husband and I returned to the states in 2015. The adjustment back to a “traditional” life was fairly jarring and we had a few months where we felt like we couldn’t tell the ground from the sky. Since we’d sold everything before we left, we came home with nothing. We rented a house, but it was completely empty. We didn’t own a bed, a couch, a car or dishes. So initially there was this out-of-control feeling as we re-acquired all of this stuff we’d purposefully gotten rid of. Then my husband went back to a 9-5 job and that was a real shock to the system. I had my book and freelance work to focus on, but all in all it just took a while to find our feet again.

There were bright spots too, though. I longed for a routine and was happy to have one again. Toward the end of our trip all I wanted was an oven to bake bread in and dresser drawers to organize my clothes. The small things that I used to take for granted in everyday life became things that I really missed. To this day, if it’s raining outside and I’m inside, I thank the universe to have a roof over my head and warm water in the faucet. Those things weren’t guaranteed when we were traveling, and there are many people that do not have such luxuries. I just don’t take those conveniences for granted anymore.

For a long time we said that we’d never do a truly nomadic trip again because the adjustment back was so hard—but of course now we are plotting our next big adventure. Though when we hit the road next time we’re getting a storage unit!

AM: Are you still in touch with Michele and Glenn?

KD: Absolutely! Michele and Glenn still live in Oregon, and while we don’t live in Oregon anymore, we keep in touch via email and Facebook and of course we see them whenever we go back to the west coast. A few months after we returned to the states Michele took a six-month sabbatical and Glenn quit his job and they set out on their own trip around the world!

AM: Inspiration and being a role model when you may not realize it is a theme that we kept seeing in your book. Besides Michele and Glenn, who else inspired you on this trip?

KD:
I met so many inspiring people on our trip. I think the most inspiring thing was not one single person, but this realization that there are so many ways to live—and there’s no “right way.” In the U.S. there’s this belief that you should follow this very traditional and well-trodden path that’s like: high school, college (if you’re lucky), job, house, marriage, kids… you know it because everyone knows it. It’s just a part of who we are as Americans. There’s nothing wrong with it per se, it’s just not the only way.

It wasn’t until I set out into the world that I realized that there are people all over the world living in very different ways—and they were happy. Of course, I always knew this intellectually but to actually experience it was a whole new thing for me. There are people that have very little money, but are incredibly rich in community—their social fabric is so strong.

I met people that had traveled for years and were raising their kids on the open road. I met olive farmers and doctors and rickshaw drivers and holy men and women and what I realized was that, you know, we all need certain things to have a good life—clean water and air, food, access to a good education, community—but after that life can take so many shapes. You don’t have to do it the way everyone back home is doing it. You’re allowed to live life
in the way that makes you feel really alive, even if it doesn’t make sense to other people.

AM: You traveled for 2 years on this trip - what are 3 things you loved and 3 things you could have done without on the trip?

KD: We actually traveled for nearly 3 years! Not every country and experience made it into the book.

When I look back on the trip the 3 things I really loved was, first of all, the time. Every single day was wide open. I had the time to really look inward, to ask myself what I wanted out of life, to spend time mentally sorting through my life and truly getting to know myself. I feel so incredibly lucky that I had those years—they changed my life.

The second thing I really loved, and maybe this makes me sound a bit selfish, was that I didn’t worry about people. Since I wasn’t home and I didn’t have a phone I knew that I’d only hear about something if it was really important. I used to be the kind of person where, if the phone rang unexpectedly, I’d automatically think that something was wrong. I guess I’m a worrier by nature. But I stopped worrying because I was so far away from home and I couldn’t fix anything for anybody—and that feeling was incredibly freeing.

The third thing I loved was the food. Oh man, the food. Especially the Indian food—even the airplane food in India made me drool.

As far as the things I could have done without. Well, I really missed the people I loved. I missed being a daily part of people’s lives. You leave and the world keeps right on spinning and you realize that if you don’t show up for people they move on without you. I also could have done without the marriage tensions and problems that came to a head while traveling. But the thing is, I’m also grateful that I faced my deepest questions—about my marriage and myself—head on. It’s so easy to stuff uncomfortable thoughts and feelings down and ignore the truth and much, much harder to face it. No one wants to go through gut-wrenching times, but they’re necessary.

AM: What lessons that you learned on the trip do you still do to this day?

KD: One of the biggest things I learned on the trip was to let go. I stopped being a control freak. I used to think that I was just born that way but, nope, it’s a learned thing and it can be changed. Now I know that the only thing I can control is my reaction in any given situation. So I just roll with things now. It’s so much better not getting worked up about small things!

Because of the yellow envelope gift we were given, I also learned a lot about giving. I learned that giving will always be awkward and uncomfortable but that's no reason to avoid it. To this day I still give yellow envelopes away and I’ve even started something called The Yellow Envelope Project (find it on Facebook @yellowenvelopeproject) where I mail yellow envelopes to people around the globe and they use their envelope to perform an act of kindness.

AM: Prior to leaving on this trip, what are 3 things that you would have never done in your old life, but find yourself enjoying now?

KD: I used to be a planner, but now most of the time I just show up and figure things out when I get there. It leaves room for spontaneity and adventure.

I also used to be so guarded of my time, but now I’m more open. I make time for people—I almost always say yes to an invitation, whereas before I said no because my life was so scheduled and regimented.

I’m also just more curious about people and more trusting. I mean, I traveled the world for three years, relying on strangers the whole time, and time and time again people proved to me that humans are generally good and willing to help as long as you are open to receiving. That’s the thing; I wasn’t open to receiving things before. Now, I let people help me. And I do everything I can to help other people. We’re all in this thing together.

AM: What are your favorite mountains/hiking trails?

KD: Oh, there are so many!! First, I have to start in my own backyard because the United States has some of the most stunning natural beauty in the world. The National Parks are a national treasure—I could spend the rest of my life just exploring states like Utah, Colorado, Oregon and Washington.

I have a very soft spot in my heart for the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile pilgrimage route through Spain that I walked solo (though it didn't make it into the book - maybe another book!). The Camino de Santiago is a special experience, there’s nothing else like it on earth.

I also have to give a shout-out to Nepal. My husband and I walked the Annapurna Circuit. That was some of the hardest trekking of my life (we crested a 17,000-foot pass!) but also some of the most magical. It’s not just the mountains, which are amazing, but also the villages that you walk through. It’s a special part of the world and I can’t wait to go back.

AM: What places/countries have you yet to visit that are on your bucket list?

KD: Namibia, Tanzania, Iceland, New Zealand, Ireland, Bhutan, Tibet… should I go on?

AM: Are you still in touch with the women you met in India or those that were on the biking trip in Vietnam?

KD: Somewhat, yes. Thanks to the wonders of Facebook and Instagram I’m able to keep up to date with most of the people I met on my trip.

AM: There are many people/experiences that you share - is there a moment that didn't make it in that you or Brian were impacted by?

KD: I think of a thousand small moments that impacted us—people stopping to ask us if we needed directions when we looked lost, people that asked us curiously about our life back home, just small moments when others took the time out of their day to assist us in some way. I think in general we’re all so caught up in our own lives and moving so fast that we rarely take the time to look up and see how we can be of service. I try to pay more attention now to small ways that I can help.

AM: Culturally you walked in the shoes of others throughout your journey as you experienced various "culture shocks". Share 3 with us and why is traveling to places different than your own so important?

KD: Traveling is so important because it teaches you what it's like to be a foreigner. It’s hard to be the odd man out like that. It’s impossible to know what that feels like and not have more compassion and understanding for people having similar experiences in your own country. Traveling teaches you that your way is not the only way. You don’t have
to get on an airplane and fly halfway around the world to learn this lesson. If you live in the country, go to the city. If you live in the city, head to the country. Be open and curious—you’ll learn something.

As far as culture shock goes, I think the biggest culture shock came when we transitioned from western to eastern cultures. In western cultures, thinking is very linier and logical. In eastern cultures, it seems like there is more wiggle room. If you try to use logic to make sense of the way some things go down in places like India, you’ll go nuts. But if you can just learn to laugh and accept things as they are, you’ll be fine. That was my experience.

AM: What was your favorite country and/or city covered in the book?

KD: Well, when I look back on the trip I know that some of my feelings about certain places are clouded by my own personal journey. I was battling a lot of internal unrest in South America, so when I think back to some of those countries it's hard for me to separate my own unhappiness with my overall feelings about a place. On the other hand, I am in love with India. I loved the country, the people, the culture—but I also had a bit of an awakening in that country, so I’m sure the fact that I kind of came out the other side of things and found balance there is also part of the reason why I love that country so much. I’m almost afraid to go back because I love it in my memory just the way it is.

TRAVEL CHALLENGE | HIS X HER

May 7, 2017

One of the tipping points between couples involves their travel compatibility! It's when you find out whether you can be outside of your normal surroundings and how you handle it. In addition, it's an eye opener on how you handle navigating in new cities, how stress levels affect you and of course how much one packs! We talked with the team at DUFL to find out how they are a solution to your travel needs as well as tips that you should keep in mind when it comes to your next destination!

ATHLEISURE MAG: What is your background and how did it lead you to create DUFL?

ANDREA GRAZIANI: I’ve spent the majority of my career in internet technology and software. Because of this, we spent a lot of time on the road traveling for business. On one particular trip, I’d packed for 14 days in London in a carry-on bag because my business partners all traveled with carry-on bags and there was no time to wait at baggage claim. We were heading back to Arizona on a Friday and had to spend the weekend unpacking, doing laundry, dropping off same-day dry cleaning and then packing everything in that carry-on again in order to be in New York on Monday. Our CEO and Founder, Bill Rinehart looked at us and said ‘there has to be a better way.’ And the notion for DUFL was born.

AM: What is DUFL and how does it make traveling easier?

AG: DUFL is a travel service that inventories, photographs, cleans and stores your business wardrobe in a DUFL virtual closet. When you are ready to travel, just open the DUFL app, enter their destination, arrival date and tap on the photos of the items in your DUFL closet that you’d like to pack and a professionally packed suitcase will meet you at your hotel. When you’re all done, request a pick up in the DUFL app, attach the provided shipping label to your suitcase and drop it at the hotel front desk.

We’ll ship it back to the DUFL warehouse where we’ll clean, inventory and store your items until you are ready to travel again.

DUFL eliminates the need to pack, do laundry, unpack and drag a bag through the airport or to client meetings or events. Packing takes about 60 seconds in the app and eliminates stress and gives our users approximately 3-5 hours of personal time previously spent on those meaningless tasks.

AM: Why is the notion of traveling as a couple such a big deal whether you're embarking on your first trip or the umpteenth one?

AG: I think there’s a different dynamic with couples, and a lot of communication around events, clothing requirements, who’s bringing the hair dryer to who’s bringing the shampoo. I tend to over pack when I’m traveling with my husband because we both have different ideas of things we’d like to do when we are on a trip.

AM: What packing tips can you share with us that are worth noting when traveling with your significant other?

AG: Try to have a bit of a plan - if not with pre-planned itineraries, then at least coordinate who will bring what so you don’t double up on toiletries, etc. For shorter trips, it’s sometimes possible to consolidate the packing into one large suitcase for the both of you. If you don’t want to check a bag, take advantage of the allowable two bags per person on the plane and consolidate your electronics and snacks into one bag to allow more room for clothes and shoes!

AM: When traveling to warmer climates, one would think that the packing is easier but what should we consider when bringing items with us?

AG: I personally hate to check a bag so knowing that I need to take items like sunscreen and bug spray creates a problem for me. Either take a few travel size bottles of each or purchase those items when I arrive at my destination. I’d also recommend taking light layers, a few swim suits if there’s a beach and ziploc bags for your wet and sandy items returning with you. I’d also recommend bringing anti-frizz hair products, moisturizers, and perhaps some oil blotting wipes to keep your skin regulated.

AM: What should we do upon returning from a trip to make it easier?

AG: I’d like to say unpack right away but that would make me a hypocrite as I may hold the world record for taking the longest amount of time to unpack :). Prior to using DUFL, I would try to do my laundry before returning home to make re-entry a bit easier.

AM: Tell us more about Battle of the Sexes: Vacation Travelling (i.e. women traditionally over pack and men tend to oversimplify. Do you see a difference in gender when it comes to packing?)

AG: I must say, I have been surprised to see that there are plenty of men who ‘over pack’ just like the stereotypical woman does! While women do tend to store more items in their closets, we think that because DUFL allows folks to take as much as they want with them (no sacrificing items to fit in a carry-on bag or stay under weight limit at the airport), our customers tend to take as much as they want. They bring business clothes, 70% of our users take workout clothes with them on their trips and sometimes things like pillows, blankets and robes make the trip as well.

AM: What are 5 essentials that everyone should have when traveling?

AG: Your own shampoo and conditioner, a good book, headphones, workout clothes, comfortable/sensible shoes, and bug repellent- especially to tropical areas

AM: What are 5 items that we should not bring when traveling?

AG: Too much jewelry. Stick with a few classic pieces so they don’t get lost/stolen during your travels and take up too much space, too many clothes- make sure to pack items that you can wear again, impractical shoes, expensive items and kids :)
